/qst/ - Quests

>This is a quest taking place in the Fullmetal Alchemist setting, beginning at roughly the same time as the original story. However, some parts of the setting have been slightly altered. You will be playing as a Iskander Steiner, a young alchemist, who will develop based on the choices made by the players. Remember that write-ins are always welcome, and to have fun.

After sleeping like a log the whole night, you and Leah find yourselves extremely hungry when you wake. Neither of you took the time last night for dinner after yesterday's events, and it's only just now catching up to you. The two of you head down to the cafeteria, where you find the Elric brothers already at a table. They wave you over, and you both take a seat next to them.

"Hey guys, so we neglected to tell you some good news we got yesterday." Edward says. "With all the excitement, we kind of missed our chance to address it."

"You know how I got the ability to use transmutation without a circle yesterday?" Al asks. "It was because I regained my memories of seeing the truth. And while I was there, I saw my body! It's still there, in the gate! All we have to do is find out how to pull it back out."

"There's also the less pleasant detail that when we tried to revive mom, Al's soul was put into the body we created." Ed adds. "Until I gave my arm to pull it back out and bind it to the armor. And I'm wondering, if it costs so much just to move a soul around, how are we gonna pull Al's whole body out? Anyway, we'll keep looking into it. It's just nice to know his body is still there. It's the first tangible bit of hope we've had towards getting it back. At least, since the Philosopher's Stone was a bust."

All of you sans Alphonse go on eating, though at one point you could swear you saw him sneak some food up to his helmet. That would be ridiculous though, so you convince yourself you saw things wrong.

Once you're all finished, you get up and head out. Mustang wanted you to go see Yi sometime today to discuss things, but you don't actually know when that's supposed to be. In fact, if Mustang is going to be under increased surveillance, he may not get a change to come and discuss anything at all. You still aren't aware of the fallout from yesterday's incident.

Before you go anywhere, you should see how things are with the Lieutenant Colonel. The situation could already have changed since last night. If the military really has been hiding the existence of these homunculi while utilizing them for its purposes, then they've been doing a damn good job keeping it secret until now. Who knows what kind of backlash that could warrant, sacrifice or no?

Waving goodbye to the Elric brothers, you and Leah head to Central headquarters, and make your way towards Mustang's office. As you enter, you immediately see a difference. While he usually just keeps his closest men around, today there are rows and rows of desks set up with soldiers at every one. Each of them seems strangely attentive.

"Iskander, Crawford. What can I do for you?" Mustang asks, waving you over. You both take a seat in front of his desk. "As you can see, I got a lot more subordinates all of a sudden. Not only that, but at least two of them will accompany me anywhere I go. 'For protection', they say. I'm told that it may stay this way as long as Scar is at large. They seem to be considering doing the same with other State Alchemists."

Mustang's eye sharpens, and you can tell that was more of a warning. An escort for not only the Lieutenant Colonel, but for you and for the Elrics would make further planning all but impossible. You may only be able to hope it doesn't come to pass.

Then, you see Mustang point to his left with his eyes. He's urging you to look. Taking a glance, you see the white haired man that you've seen working under Mustang. He's doing something with his hands. Is that sign language? It's rough, and he's trying to do it subtly enough not to raise suspicion, but you think you can make out that he wants you to go to the warehouse. Though Leah seems to have caught it all before you.

"We understand." she tells him. We have to be going. Be careful, Sir."

The two of you get up to leave, and Mustang seems relieved that his plans of communication aren't completely shot.

Waving goodbye to the Lieutenant Colonel, you and Leah make your way out of headquarters. You walk around the city for a bit, with no destination in particular in mind, just to make sure you aren't being tailed or anything. Once you're fairly confident, the two of you make your way to the warehouse, careful not to draw any attention.

After a knock on the door, they crack it open just a bit to see you, then let you inside. Most of the chimeras are just hanging around relaxing. You're led to the same back room as before, but this time it's Yi, Hughes, and the Elrics inside. You don't see any sign of Tucker anywhere.

"Hey there, Iskander." Hughes greets you. "Roy and his men are all locked down for a while, so I'll be running info for them however I can."

"The result of the operation yesterday was less than optimal, but knowing about the existence of the homunculi alone is a huge boon." Yi tells you. "They are the very representation of what I aim to prevent. Immortality used for such wicked purposes."

First thing's first, you have Leah ask about the other part of yesterday's operation that you didn't get to hear succeeded or failed.

"Yi, were you able to track Scar?" she asks. "I know he was supposed to be followed, but I'm not confident."

"Bido was able to pull it off." Yi answers. "Though we didn't hear back from him until about an hour ago. Apparently Scar and the girl were out all night walking around town for some reason. Bido wasn't able to come back and report until he was sure they weren't changing location. However, we were able to learn that Scar has another accomplice in addition to the girl. A middle aged man with a mustache. After reporting to us, Bido went back to keep up his tailing. He'll be back to inform us of any developments."

Well, that's good to know. Next, you move on to the main issue. You sign to Leah, who relays the question that's not on just yours, but everyone's mind.

"So what are we going to do next?" Leah asks. "How do we proceed from here?"

Everyone is silent for a bit, and there are only the sounds of some chimeras roughhousing outside.

"We're still not entirely sure." Hughes says. "If we try to pull something like this again, we may not get off so easy. Our next move has to be a lot more subtle."

"There is something I want to mention." Yi speaks up. "When we looked down the hole that Gluttony had eaten, I felt a terrible chill. The awful feeling of a terrible evil emanating out from deep in the ground. It was the same feeling I felt when we investigated the tunnels with the chimera in them. I have no doubt it led down there. I believe the homunculi themselves may be down there."

You don't want to make a hasty decision. You sign to Leah that you want to hear everyone else's opinion, hers included.

"Everyone, what are each of your thoughts on investigating this tunnel?" she asks. "I personally don't like the idea. Even if we survive facing the inhabitants, there's no guarantee that whatever we find down there will solve the problem of how the homunculi connect with the military. However... We don't really have any other leads. And the fact that there's no direct link to the military might make this avenue of investigation our safest one, in a certain sense. I think we should do it, but only if enough of us go down to watch out for each other."

"Well said, Leah." Hughes smiles. "I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunately, we might not be able to get as much backup as you'd like. No one wearing a military uniform should be caught anywhere near that tunnel. You guys can get away with it since there's kind of a buffer between you and the rest of the system, but we can't afford to go. Besides, Roy and Armstrong are probably the only ones strong enough to really help, and they've got their own work to handle. If you guys go down there, it might just be with who you've got with you here. Bright side is, while we can't help you in the field, we'll be hard at work behind the scenes. We may not have a lot of direction right now, but I guarantee you the gears are already turning in Roy's head on his next play. He's not out of this game yet."

"I think we should go." Ed says. Al nods in agreement. "Between us, I think we can handle it. And I'm not letting those homunculi keep us in the dark."

"I would join you if you were to venture below." Yi adds. "Against my better judgement. Yesterday, that homunculus was willing to do anything to see me dead. Even kill their own 'sacrifices'. For me to come to them is practically asking to be killed. However, I know the truth of the Philosopher's Stone, and that the homunculi carry one inside themselves. I have to destroy them. I can't afford to worry about my own survival anymore. Not when my mission is right in front of me."

It seems everyone is at least open to the idea. And it's true enough that you don't have many other leads yet.

It seems that everyone is in agreement. You, Leah, Yi, and the Elric brothers will go down to investigate the tunnel.

As the group acknowledges this next move, you hear some commotion from outside. Yi opens the door to check, and you all look out to see some of the human chimeras cheering, hands in the air. In the center of the warehouse you see Tucker, standing next to a circle he's set up. In the circle, you see the corpses of two animals, a dog and a porcupine. The animals are dead, but the bodies are each entirely in one piece.

"As you can see, separation is possible." Tucker says, over the cheering chimeras. "A lot more testing will need to be done before it can be performed on a living patient, but the pieces are all there. Thanks to the cooperation of all of you, we've been able to make great progress in this short time. I have no doubt that we're mere months away from the breakthrough you've all been waiting for. No longer will you have to live in the shadows. But before that... we will join our allies in overthrowing the military that made you this way. They will find themselves ripped from their positions of authority by the power they themselves gave you. I hope they will be able to appreciate the irony."

Roa hushes everyone and tells them to quiet down, and you all in the back room make to leave.

"I'll find a way to let Roy know what's going on." Hughes says. "You guys be careful. Good luck."

After Hughes leaves, Yi turns to you, Leah, and the Elrics.

"We can head to the tunnels right away." he says. "Unless you have something you want to do first."

There's nothing else you want to do. You have Leah tell Yi as much, and he begins to lead you and the Elrics through the city, carefully dodging through back alleys to avoid any prying eyes. After a while, you stop at a small gate. Beyond it, you can see stairs leading downward into impenetrable darkness.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5UJ6U_wwMbo&index=13&

"This is the tunnel that we found." Yi explains. "It's from here that Tucker has been procuring his materials. Once we enter, we'll surely be beset by hordes of the creatures. You three alchemists will likely be fine, and I can handle opponents of this level easy enough. Crawford, be careful. Your gun will be less effective against the volume of enemies down there. You should focus on your own safety."

You all nod, and Yi wrenches open the gate. You all head down the stairs. You glance up to see Yi stop for a moment and look around, before shutting the gate behind him and following.

You all reach the bottom of the stairs, and the path stretches out alongside a waterway.

"I can sense the source of the disturbing feeling." Yi tells you, heading out in front. "I will lead the way. Be careful for any hint of attack, as it won't be long until the chimeras find us."

Sure enough, it wasn't long until the chimeras showed up. As you walked down the path, you could see eyes gazing back at you from above. Several chimeras dropped down from the grates overhead, and made straight for you. Taking up a formation with Leah in the middle, since she's the most vulnerable, you, Yi, and the Elrics started cutting your way through the waves of creatures. A few of them prove to be a bit harder to kill than the others, but none of them pose all that much danger. Three of you can simply clap your hands to use alchemy, trivializing the encounter. The most the chimeras really manage to do is slow your progress. The continued waves of chimera don't stop, they only briefly subside. Yi can only take the time to lead the group forward at those times. After what seems like a very long time, and countless chimeras slain, your group reaches a large door. You can see Yi's fists shaking.

"This is it." he tells you. "Behind this door is the source of the awful feeling. I can only imagine what lay in wait for us."

You look to Al, and you see the chest of his armor rattling. He takes his helmet off, then reaches in to pull out some kind of tiny panda.

"Whatever it is, it's scaring her too." Al says, before petting the animal. "There, there. I'll keep you safe."

"Why the hell did you bring that thing down here, Al?" Edward asks. "We've got enough to worry about already!"

"Another thing." Yi speaks up again. "I thought I caught the feeling of someone else behind us as we entered, but I am sure of it now. We've been followed down here, by two people. Whether they are friend or foe, I'm not sure, but I'm not optimistic. At the very least, I'm sure neither of them are a homunculus. But I don't know what will happen once we're discovered."

"Then let's hurry and check what's here." Ed goes on. "If we've got to be quick, then let's get to it and get out of here."

>A.We can't get boxed in. Let's take care of those two before we go in

You hold out a hand and urge Ed to wait, then sign your thoughts to Leah.

"Iskander says we should take care of the two following us before we go inside." she explains. "He says we can't let ourselves get boxed in."

"Well, that makes sense." Ed replies. "But it might throw a wrench into our plans depending on who it is. But I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it."

The five of you find a good spot to hide, ready to jump out when your pursuers reveal themselves. After a while, you hear the sound of fighting from farther down the tunnel. It dies down, then Yi motions to you that the two are approaching. At his signal, you all jump out, Ed and Al raising a wall to block the exit path. You and Yi stand ready to attack, while Leah aims her rifle.

In the moment you all take places, you observe your pursuers. It's Scar and the young alkahestrist girl. Scar is clearly uncomfortable at this development, and grinds his teeth while holding his arm out. He's not moving, but he's clearly looking for the slightest opening in your attention to attack. The girl however, seems completely oblivious, as she stares in Al's direction.

"You!" she shouts, pointing. "Give back Xiao May! You stole her! Kidnapped her!"

The little girl walks forward, completely ignoring the threat posed to her, towards Al, who backs up from her until pressed to the wall.

"I didn't mean to, honest!" Al insists. "She was lost when I found her, so I was trying to find her owner!"

The tiny panda jumps down from Al's shoulder and into the girl's arms. As the two smile and hug from their reunion, Yi speaks up.

"What are you doing here, little girl?" he asks. "Not just down here, but in Amestris. It's dangerous."

"I'm May Chang, of the Chang Clan." the girl answers. "To save my clan, I need to return to Xing with the secret of immortality. Without the emperor's favor, we will surely perish."

"The Chang Clan?" Yi replies. "A poor clan you may be, but the emperor still considers you his countrymen. I've traveled even farther from the East than you, and I can't let you have your way."

"Even farther?" May wonders. "From Silla?"

"Enough with the chit-chat!" Ed interrupts, his eyes still trained on Scar. "What are we gonna do now? We can't exactly head inside like this."

"I was only helping the girl find her pet." Scar says. "To think it would lead me into this situation."

As the other people present all stay wary of each other, you sign over to Leah. She nods to confirm that she understood you, but as she speaks, she doesn't lower her rifle.

"Scar." she calls out to the man. "We're going through the door back there to find out the truth behind the homunculi. You're going to be coming in with us. After everything in there is said and done, we should be able to part ways back out on the surface. As long as you can play it cool during our time down here and not attack us."

Everyone else goes silent and looks at Scar, waiting for his answer. After a while of watching him struggle with himself, he speaks up.

"If the girl is right, something far more sinister than any alchemist lies in wait beyond that door." he says. "I too wish to know the truth of it. I can accept your terms. I will not fight you so long as we remain in these tunnels."

"I suppose that'll have to do, huh?" Ed sighs. "Alright, you better keep your word, Scar."

With that settled, you all prepare to go through the giant door. Al and Scar push it open, and you step through. Inside, there are pipes and tubes going all across the floor, walls, and ceiling. In the back, you see a table with what look like studying materials all about it. And at the center of the room, you see a throne, to which all of the pipes and tubes seem to connect. Sitting atop it, there is a man whose face is mostly in shadow. From this angle it's a bit hard to make out any details, but it seems to be an older man with blond hair and a beard. You're a bit hesitant to get any closer. You decide to keep your distance, and sign to Leah that she should ask who that man is.

"Who are you?" Leah asks. "And what are you doing down here?"

"I live here." the man answers, standing up. "It's quite rude to barge into someone's home and demand their name."

As the man begins to walk toward you, you notice Yi and May begin shaking.

"That man, he's the source of this terrible feeling." Yi tells you. "He feels like the homunculi, yet on a completely different level."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSs9H1ANmL4&

When the man gets close enough to make out his features, you recognize him. He looks just like Hohenheim. The similarity is not lost on the Elric brothers.

"Dad?" Al asks. "No, it can't be!"

"No way, dad's back in Resembool!" Ed adds. "But somehow this guy looks just like him!"

"If you recognize my appearance, then you must speak of Van Hohenheim." the man says, observing the Elric brothers. "And you say you're his children? Automail limbs and an armor body, yes you are surely the Elric brothers. Yet you are Hohenheim's sons. Were it not for the different names, I could have known that much sooner."

"And here we have yet another sacrifice come to us." the man looks to you. "I wonder just what it is you're all doing down here. To fight your way past my gatekeepers, you must have some objective. However, I don't think you realized just what you were getting yourselves into."

Every second this goes on is only inviting more questions. You want some answers. Signing everything to Leah, only just slow enough to be comprehensible, you have her relay your questions for you.

"You seem to already know well who we are." Leah tells the man. "Now tells us, who are you? What is your connection to the homunculi, and Hohenheim? And what do you mean by sacrifices?"

I am the creator of the homunculi. And for this reason, I am known by the name 'Father'. As for my relation to Hohenheim, I see no reason to tell you. You may poke into that further on your own time. And my sacrifices, important resources that I will need to fulfill my ambitions, are alchemists that fulfill the requirements I need. As of now, I have four. Your friend, the two Elric brothers, and their father. In addition to a number of candidates for the final sacrifice. On that note... Gluttony."

The homunculus from before drops down from above.

"Eat all of the people here save for the sacrifices. And the tall girl. She may be useful as leverage." Father tells Gluttony. "But the Ishvalan has been going around and nearly ruining our plans. He must be eliminated. As well as the man and girl that use alkahestry. They cannot be allowed to live."

"Of course, Father." Gluttony replies. "Since Envy had to go do more work, I get them all to myself now!"

All of your group takes up a more combative stance as Gluttony approaches.

You're not staying here longer just to get attacked. The info you've gained will be more than enough. It's time to leave. You sign to Leah and tell her to say as much.

"Everyone, we need to get out of here!" she shouts. "Staying will only put us in more danger!"

She takes a few shots at Gluttony while both of you back up towards the door.

"Fine." Scar turns to run. "Even though I'd rather destroy this man and his vile creations, I will relent for now."

"I share the sentiment." Yi adds. "This won't be our last encounter, but for now I'll place my safety as a higher priority."

"That won't do." Father says. "I'll have to make the sacrifices dead weight. You'll have no choice but to submit."

Father steps on the ground in front of him, and a flash of lightning jolts from the ground. You then feel a wave of energy flow out from him and permeate everything. You have no idea what it does, but it makes you very uncomfortable.

It doesn't however, keep you and your entourage from escaping the room. Gluttony does keep following you though, and as you start your trek back through the tunnels, you see hordes of chimera emerge once again to get in your way.

You, Ed, and Al immediately move to transmute and attack the chimeras, but you clap your hands together, place them and the ground, and fail to effect anything. The three of you look at each other, puzzled, as your opponents draw nearer.

"What the hell?" Ed mumbles. "Why can't we use alchemy? Is it something that guy did?"

"How are we supposed to fight all the chimeras and Gluttony at the same time without alchemy?" Al asks. "We're sitting ducks!"

>A.Try to power through, alchemy or no

>B.Gluttony won't eat you or the Elrics, you can run interference

>C.Find a strategic position to take up, where your remaining combatants won't be overwhelmed

Okay, we're doing B, gonna need the standard roll to see how it goes, but I also need to know something else that I forgot to put in the original post, are you bringing Leah with you, or are you sending her up with the others?

Yi and May are still able to use their alkahestry, and Scar is having no problems with his technique as well. If you and the Elrics want to help, there's only one obvious thing to do that can really help. You sign your idea to Leah.

"What? We can't leave you behind, we don't know what they'll do to you!" Leah insists. "Edward, Alphonse, Iskander wants you three to stay and distract Gluttony while we run, but that's a terrible idea, isn't it? We need to stick together."

"No... that may be our best chance." Ed replies. "We know they won't kill us, they need us around. We can buy the time you guys need to escape."

"Yeah. I see." Al goes on. "You all need to get out of here, since they have no use for you. They won't hesitate to get rid of you. But if it's us, we can afford to get in the way. They still need us."

"There is no way I'm letting you do that." Leah insists. "At the very least, I'm staying here with you."

You shake your head, and Yi comes up behind Leah, grabbing her by the shoulder.

"You said it yourself, it's too dangerous for you." he tells her. "You need to come up with us. Don't worry Iskander, we'll make sure she's taken care of."

It takes a bit more convincing, but Leah eventually relents. And not a moment too soon. As soon as she and Yi run off after Scar and May, Gluttony pounces. However, the three of you are able to hold him back.

"Not so fast, Gluttony!" Al says. "You can't just eat us, can you?"

"No... You're Father's important sacrifices." Gluttony mumbles, still held back by the three of you. "If I can't eat you, then I don't know what to do. I'll have to bring you to him."

Gluttony backs up, and grabs you and Ed. He's absurdly strong. Without alchemy, you don't even have the slightest hope of beating him. Both Ed and your punches are completely ineffectual, and even Al's attacks are little more than a bother. He carries you and Ed off, leaving Al with no choice but to follow. The three of you end up back in Father's Chamber.

"Father, the sacrifices stopped me from getting to the others." Gluttony tells the man. "So I brought them here."

"I see. We'll have to track the others down later. We certainly can't leave them be." Father replies. "As for these three, send them up the elevator."

Gluttony carries you two down a hallway, and Al follows. You all eventually reach an elevator. Gluttony places you inside, then Al joins you.

"I can't go up there." Gluttony tells you. "Envy would be perfect for this, but he's always so busy. He only got to come visit for a little bit..."

Gluttony presses a button, then waves at the three of you as the door closes. You feel the elevator go up, and it eventually stops, the door opening. You all step out, and are surprised. Looking out a window directly in front of you tells you that you are inside Central Headquarters.

"You boys just can't keep your nose out of things, can you?" you hear. You turn to see the Fuhrer. And he doesn't look happy.

So I'm really sorry that barely anything got done this time around guys, it was really bad timing. Also, no thread next week, got work stuff I'm getting ready for. Good news is, unlike last year, where I took like a month off during winter, this year, I plan to pick way up. Expect a lot more getting done
