BEEPBEEPBEEPBEE-

Ugh, mornings. You wake up and rub your eyes blearily, glancing at your clock. 7:30 on the dot.

You are Alfreda 'Alfie' Nicholls, captain of Cromwell State College's not-quite-dead Tankery team, and you have a splitting headache. What's more, you can hardly remember yesterday. You... vaguely remember going to see the headmistress and Suzy saying she'd take care of it so you could go out for a couple of drinks... one day you'll find out where she gets contraband beer from.
First things first, you get a glass of water from the kitchen and chug it before dressing for a run. You're halfway through pulling shorts up your thighs before you realise Suzy's on your sofa and watching you. You immediately stop still, glaring.
"Don't let me stop you, Alfie~" Your gunner giggles.
"Why are you in my apartment."
"Couldn't be fucked to leave." She rubs her eyes, "Who gets up this early?" She also looks completely fine, the bitch.
"Me. Don't you need to get ready for work?" You start lacing up your trainers.
"Ugh, I guess so. Can I use your shower?"
"Go wild, I'll be back soon." You wave as you step out.
...
By the time you get back Suzy's already left for the command tower, so you shower, dress, and have breakfast. Oh, shoot, you forgot to ask Suzy about the mechanics club.
Hm. What to do?

Better check your emails before you head out. You open up your laptop and click on gmail.

>Start of school from CSC Faculty
To All Students,
This is a reminder that school for General Studies officially starts on Monday 5th September. Please check CSC's Virtual Learning Environment for your individual timetable, sorted by year.
For Naval Studies students, please refer to your individual officers.

Regards, The Faculty

You'll have to keep that in mind. Next one.

>Mechanics Club and Tank Satus from Principal Brown
To Ms Nicholls,
Your friend, Susan O'Connell, has brought to my attention the need for repairs and maintenance the tankery team will require and the incapability to do this with your reduced roster. She has also informed me the Mechanics Club have offered to perform this duty in return for extra credits, which I have approved.
Furthermore, after discussions with a contact in the ITL they are prepared to release your old tank. It should be here two weeks from now, on the 15th.

Best of luck,
Principal Brown

Fuck yeah, you're gonna get Achilles back! You do a little dance before realising what the other piece of news means. You have people to repair your stuff now too! Awesome!

>QUEST COMPLETE: A HELPING HAND
The Mechanics Club will now help to repair and maintain your tanks. Additionally, Belle Cooper is available to discuss upgrades or buying new tanks entirely!

>QUEST UNLOCKED: DEATH TRAPS NO LONGER
>Have the Mechanics club repair all your tanks to proper condition.

Well, now that's dealt with, you should called Melissa. You dial her number. No answer. You try again, but still nothing. Strange. You check the time: 8:57. She's always up by now. Well, she's only a floor down from you!
It takes just a few minutes to hurry down a floor of the dorms before you're outside her door. Still no answer. Oh no! What if she's passed out? What if she's DYING!?

>Knock again

>Call while knocking

You pull out your phone and dial Melissa again while hammering on the door. It goes to answerphone so you try again, and this time the door opens to show Melissa holding the phone, her face half-hidden behind the hood of a big baggy hoodie. The phone goes to voicemail as you blink, surprised, and you end the call.
"Hey Lissa, I have some missed calls from you, you okay?" You smile at your gunner.
Strangely, she shrinks away from the hallway, looking away from you. "Y-yeah. Sorry Alfie, it's nothing."
You frown and step in towards her, "Liz..."
She steps back again, but this time you get a glimpse of a black eye and a couple of bruises. Now you look closer, her knuckles are scraped, too. You put your foot in the door, "Liz..."

>"Let me in."
>"Are you okay?"
>"Holy hell, what happened?"
>"Who do I need to kill?"

And no tolerance for any attempts to dodge the subject.
>>
>>866633

>"Holy hell, what happened?"
Melissa finally gives up on trying to keep you out and reluctantly lets the door open. "I got in a fight."
You close the door behind you and reach out, studying her face. "With who?" Jeez, that's quite the shiner. And those bruised knuckles? You're having trouble believing your slight, definitive driver is possible of insulting somebody, let alone getting in a scuffle.
She flops down on her sofa. "There were some girls... seniors I'm pretty sure. Maybe even uni students? Anyway they were saying you were the reason the tankery team wasn't around any more stuff..."
Ugh, she looks so... helpless. You sigh and sit down next to her, stroking her hair.
Your driver looks up at you. "A-are you upset, Alfie?"

>Upset with a pinch of disappointed

You sigh, pinching the bridge of your nose. Trying to think of something to say, you cast your gaze around the room. Pretty much identical to yours, some personal effects scattered around. The photos in picture frames on the sideboard catch your eye- there's the one taken of the five of you last year, when you were given Achilles and joined the team proper.
"Alfie?" Melissa's voice takes you out of your reverie.
You sigh again. "Look, Lissa, I appreciate that you don't want people speaking bad of me. I really do. But you can't just battle for my honour or whatever, okay?"
She looks away from you, suitably chastised. "Okay, commander."
Damnit, that means she's upset. "Hey, come on now. I really do appreciate it, but if this happens again I need you to just walk away. For me."
Your driver blushes a little. It's pretty cute. "O-okay. Hey, how about we watch a movie?"

>"Sure, I have an hour or two to spare."
>"I can't, I need to get things done." (Embark on a quest)
>"I can't, I really need to see people." (Head out, meet up with somebody)

When the drafters come a-marching
>>
>>866852
>>"I can't, I need to get things done." (Embark on a quest: Death Traps No Longer)
Let's get the tanks up to running, then we start drafting.

Oh, and try to get Mel to tag along. For moral support if nothing else.

Be nice. She was just trying to stick up for us.

>"Sure, I have an hour or two to spare."

Your driver nods happily and puts in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.
"Aw fuck yeah." You grin, taking off your jacket and pulling the curtains shut. As you and Melissa flop down on her sofa, she comments,
"It's such a shame they never made a fourth one."

You end up watching Raiders of the Lost Ark too, but by then it's a bit past lunch time. As fun as cuddling up with your driver and watching some movies is, you need lunch. Melissa offers to make you lunch, but you get a text from Rosie:
>"Getting lunch at mcdonalds, want to come? I have some ideas for recruiting some crews. (:"

>Eh, you can waste a day, finish spending it with Melissa.

>Meet up with Rosie

"Hey Lissa, I'm gonna meet up with Rosie for lunch, wanna come?"
Your driver shakes her head, "I'd rather not with..." She gestures to her black eye.
"Fair enough." You ruffle her hair and head out.

You sit down with your box of twenty nuggets and a diet coke across from Rosie. She smiles at you, "Afternoon, Alfie. How has your day been?"
"Oh, you know. Went out for a run, sorted out our tanks being repaired, dealt with Lissa being in a fight. So what's this idea?"
Rosie blinks, pausing with a fry in hand as she sorts through this. "...My. Well, um, I was thinking we could sort out a stall at the club fair this Saturday?"
Damn, this Saturday the ITL inspectors are coming. You're not sure when, so that could be awkward.

>"Of course, we can't afford not to."
>"I suppose so, but we can't use the tanks."
>"I don't think we should do that."

No point having tanks without any crews.

>"Of course, we can't afford not to."
You pause to eat a nugget. Man, why would you come to mcdonalds and not get the nuggets? "I want you to handle that, Rosie. You're good with people. Plus we have a bit of a budget, so take whatever you need. Crews, donations, any help we can get we'll need."
Rosie salutes with a grin, "Yessir captain!"
You finish having lunch with your RO, chatting about what might happen when school starts and other things that don't matter.

Eventually the pair of you pack up and head out, and Rosie heads back to the dorms to start planning for saturday. Suddenly, you receive a phonecall!
>Belle Cooper
Huh, wonder what she wants. "Hey Belle, what's up?"
"Hey Alfie, I got an email confirming you sorted out those credits. If you wanted I could come over right now with some of my guys and gals and give the tanks you have now a once-over?"

"Sure Belle, head on over now, I'll be there in like ten minutes." Welp, might as well walk, get some exercise in.

You're just unlocking the gate when Belle arrives in an honest-to-god Dodge truck. With her is a good half-dozen naval studies students (both boys and girls) that go ahead while Belle lags behind to chat with you.
"So how's engineering going?" You ask, since you've never actually talked to her before and don't know what she's into.
"Oh, pretty good!" She smiles, hefting a toolbox. "I found a case of wine and some sex toys somebody tried to smuggle in alongside some power tools, so I made sure to confiscate them if you know what I mean..." She must have seen your expression because she giggles and pats your shoulder. "Just kidding. Anyway, once we're done here, I'll see about giving you a list of upgrades and such, how does that sound?"
You nod gratefully. "Anything you can do to help."
Belle smiles again and heads into the hanger.

>Hang around, see if you can help. You worked on your Crusader for a year after all.

>Hang around

An hour or two later you're in your shirt and shorts, covered in grease with your elbow in an engine block of one of the crusaders. It turns out that apart from the two needing actual repairs, all of them were in pretty bad shape. Luckily, Belle's forward-thinking means there's enough spare parts to go around, and by the time Suzy and Mandy walk in, all of them are in tip-top fighting position, with the exception of the Matilda, which still needs some work.
"Hey Alfie!" Suzy waves a bag of KFC. "Rosie said you were here with the mechanics so we picked up some stuff."

Aw ye, fried chicken.
You, Belle, Suzy, Mandy, and the naval students that came with her chow down on KFC. You find yourself sitting next to Mandy.
"Hey Mandy, you do anything today?"
"Uh-huh."
"Anything fun?"
"Yep."
Ugh. She's been like this for two years.

You leave Belle with an extra key in return for a promise that they'll finish work on the Matilda tonight.
It's nice to walk along in the cool night air with one of your friends on either side.
"Hey Alfie, you really think we'll be ready for the nationals?" Suzy asks, quite out of the blue.

"To be honest, I don't know." You shrug. "I mean, we're not quite starting from scratch, but we're close. And we only have a month to get a team that can stand up to the big schools like William Adams or whatever..." You trail off. Mandy rests her hand on your shoulder.
"We're with you, commander." She says quietly. After a moment to get over her surprise, Suzy nods.
"Yep. Every step of the way."
You blink rapidly, stupid dust or something getting in your eyes. "Thanks, girls. Let's get home."
