You flick through your datascreen with your thumb, your other hand busy bringing a sandwich to your mouth. Spreading crumbs all over the data screen.

Eagle would kill you right now, but she's busy on the bridge, so you're safe. For now.

Jumping off the crates you were sitting on you stride purposefully past the many grunt carrying similarly labeled crates and containers past you. Too busy focusing on the task at hand, or shouting at one another, to even notice their superior officer. No matter. They have things to do, and so do you.

A few more swipes of the screen reveals the long list of purchases you have made over the past few days. Each one carefully labeled and numbered for your benefit (thanks, Eagle) so that you don't get too bundled up with the logistics.

Of course the biggest cost was getting your own personal spaceship, and that nearly costed you an arm and a leg.

That ship was a Colombia-Class Frigate. A bit smaller than the Birminghams, but she has speed, maneuverability, and has just as much kick as her big brother.

>What is the Frigate's name?

Of course then there's your own Mercenary Company that resides within it. You have several squads of dispensable grunts, several squadrons of Hornets for close air support, and a Titan Factory uploaded with basic Titan schematics. Not much, but you can get more later either from the Black Market, or from the fields of battle.

>But back to your Mercenary Company: What is your Company's name?

And Finally: there is the morality of your company.
>Anything goes: As long as the money is good, you'll do it.

Your steps find themselves in Star Burner's bridge. The moment the doors slide open you are assaulted by noise. Men and women sit in front of terminals, fingers tapping away keys as screens relay important information from ship system status to outgoing and incoming messages.

Despite the noise, you can clearly hear a conversation coming from the captain's nest.

"But-"

"Yes, I am well aware of our basic equipment, but basic kits were what we could afford at the time being. Buying, outfitting, and staffing this ship costed the majority of our funds. Basic Kits are all we can afford."

You spot two individuals. One sitting in the chair, the other standing next to it. You recognize the former as the new Captain Damien, and the latter as EG-L.

They both notice you step up and turn to look at you.

"Ah, Captain Morgan. A pleasure." A smartly dressed man turns in his chair, taking a moment to brush a lock of black hair from his eyes to reveal the glasses and warm blue eyes beneath. "I was just having a minor... discussion with EG-L hear about our current kits being available for ground units."

EG-L frowns, flicking some of her hair out of the way in annoyance. "Yes, if you could call it that."

>"Something wrong with the basic kits? R201's and MGL's are nothing to scoff at."

You raise an eyebrow. "I thought you two would be arguing about rations. Not weapons."

Damien shrugs. "IMC rations are superior to Militia ones. Actual meat." He inputs.

EG-L nods. "Yes. He is correct. For once." She ignores his glare and uncrosses her arms. "Damien has begun to gripe about how are grunts are poorly equipped. R201's, P2016's, MGL's, and frag grenades are nothing to scoff at."

You nod in agreement, turning to the ship captain. "Eagle's right, Damien. Standard equipment isn't bad equipment."

EG-L raises a hand to cover her smile. "Thank you, sir."

Damien frowns. "Typical." He then spins around his chair for a moment before stopping. "I have some contracts if you're interested, or would you like to explore the rest of the Star Burner? Maybe find that psy-" he pauses, "Simulacrum friend of yours..."

"Show me the contracts, Damien." You make a wave motion and the man throws you his datapad. You tuck yours away as you begin to rifle through the contracts that you, Hong, and Eagle could do to earn some damn pocket money.

"I found a few jobs that will be within your skill rating. Most of them are fairly low on the pay, but... what can you expect. Don't expect better jobs until we gain a better reputation."

>[Titan Job - Militia]: A Militia base hidden in IMC territory has been compromised. Protect the base, and then escort VIPs to the pickup zone.

Seems like it'll pay less than the other jobs though.

Out of curiosity, what titans do Eagle and Hong use? I'm guessing Hong uses a Stryder. (Or should I call it a Ronin now?) but I don't know what Eagle would use.

And we'll pick ours when we go out on a Titan mission, right?

Hong use a Ronin Titan.

Eagle has always been a traditionalist and uses the classic Atlas-Chasis with Chaingun or Quad Rockets. Ordnance is Slaved Warheads or Multi-Target Missile System.

You look over each of the contracts. You really don't want to already be choosing sides between the Militia and the IMC, not yet anyways. The White Market, however, you've heard of them. A lot. They deal with anything and everything under the sun as long as the price is good and profit can be made. The fact that you have such a contract hanging in front of you... it's a bit too enticing to be honest.

You toss the datapad into Damien's lap. "White Market. Tell them the Falling Stars have accepted and will be awaiting coordinates."

Damien picks up the datapad with a frown before spinning in his chair. He points to one the crewmen and shouts something at her. The woman salutes before returning to her terminal.

Eagle is the one who leads you out of the bridge, grabbing you by the wrist and leaving Damien to his own work.

"So..." She sighs, scratching the back of her neck. "What now?"

"Yeah." You nod. "I still have Orphan. Course correction OS, Atlas chassis, Scrambler Core, Cluster Missiles, Particle Wall, Sonar Pulse." You can't help but feel a little pride when you begin to list of Orphan's equipment. When you could finally customize your own Titan, you went a biiiiit overboard, but it was oh so worth it.

I basically mixed the two posts together until something I liked worked.

Eagle nods. "And your pilot equipment?"

"Same as always." You shrug. "DMR, P2016, Charge Rifle, and Grapple."

"You always did like the high places."

You smile. "There was a reason why everyone called me 'Eagle Eyes' before you came around, Eyes."

"Hmph." She pouts just before moving ahead of you in purposeful strides, head held high. "Let's just find Hong in the Training Hall first. Let's hope he didn't hurt anyone too badly."

~

The training hall doors slide open, and then a grunt falls unconscious before you. Unceremoniously hitting the floor as you don't bother to catch him. His fault for trying to spar with Hong.

"And that, my friends, is why even overwhelming force cannot beat a calm blade." A cool, calm voice resounds amidst the room of tired, exhausted, and bruised grunts.

Stepping over the downed grunt (and several more strewn about), you reach the training mat where you find Hong has taken a meditative stance amidst the carnage he had wrought. His head turns a quarter of an inch to stare at you with his single, lime green, sensory node.

"Ah~ my friend has arrived!" He laughs, kicking over a man who was on his foot. "And Eagle to! Happy days are head when the Brave Three are together once more. We shall do great things as mercenaries, yes?"

You chuckle. "Yes, Hong, yes we will. We got a job to do for White Market. Clandestine. No questions asked. Just the way you like it."

If it wasn't for Hong being a simulacrum, you'd swear he would be smiling right about now.

"Perfect. When shall we begin?"

"When Damien gets a-"

"Captain Morgan, please report with your fireteam to Hangar Four. You have a Goblin waiting for you."

"Right now actually." You finish, and Hong rubs his hands together with glee. "Get equipped." You turn to look at Eagle and Hong. "And meet me in Hanger 4 by five. Don't be late."

-
>>
>>882643
The ride in the Goblin was smooth after the jump. The request was purposefully vague, but it had delivered the coordinates and what was required on arrival.

[Deliver the team with a Goblin. We'll come pick you up.]

Ambiguous, but you have no choice but to follow orders. At least *that* didn't change when you went Merc.

"Falling Stars." A electronic voice pierces your com unit. "Which one of you is Captain Morgan?"

"Reporting." You state clearly. "Orders?"

"Bring have the Goblin slow its speed. We'll come pick you up."

You nod and signal the pilot to slow down. A minute later a Brick Ship jumps in a solid mile from the Goblin.

"Captain, the ship... it's wounded." The pilot states and you move to the cockpit to see.

It is indeed wounded. There's visible fire on at least four decks and air is also escaping into the vacuum. Various bits of debris peel off it as its engines sputter and stall. The fact that it jumped and didn't tear itself apart midway is astonishing to say the least.

"Captain Morgan." The voice continues. "Your mission is to board that Remnant Fleet vessel and take its Black Box. Currently its sensory and communication network will be down for a few more hours. You will complete the mission within that time frame. Failure is not an option. Good luck."

Well then. You're glad your suit is sealed against the vacuum at least.

How do you get in?

You pat the pilot on the shoulder. "Bring us in through the hangar. Nice and easy."

The pilot nods and begins to dive in. Nice and slow. The goblin drifts past the busted bulkheads and flies into the exposed hangar. Nascent materials float around in zero gravity. You spot a few corpses as well, crusted with ice, void suits perforated from shrapnel.

"Boys got messed up bad here." The pilot states. "From what I think: Birmingham shell. Critical hit straight through the hangar. Never stood a chance, poor blokes."

You nod. "Seal the cockpit. We're getting out."

He nods, locking the door behind you as ramp depressurizes. Your suit seals, and an oxygen timer pops up on the top right side of your HUD. One hour, good enough.

You jump out first, pushing off the ramp you glide towards the railing and catch on. Eagle is out next, followed by Hong. Once they're both on the railing do you shimmy up onto the walkway and glide towards the sealed door. Besides the door are two corpses, and a cutter. Looks like they tried to cut their way out before expiring. Pity.

"Eagle, the door." You nod your head to the keypad. The cyborg springs into action, kneeling next to the pad she pulls out her dataknife and pops open the box.

"No port." She explains. "Have to do things manually."

"Please do hurry." Hong speaks. "It's starting to get cold."

Both you and Eagle turn to look at Hong.

"What?"

"Hong, you can't get cold."

"Oh, right."

>Eagle's Bypass Test: 16 - PASSED

Eagle 's fingers dig into the wires, cutting away two and crossing them. A spark flies between them and keypad flips from red to green. The door slides open, the vacuum draining the oxygen within.

"Go!" You stride forward and past the door, Hong following as he drags Eagle with her. The moment the wires uncross do the doors slam shut behind her. Pressure returning to the hallway. The oxygen timer stops, and the rebreather turns off. You taste the stale, recycled air and almost go back to your rebreather. It tastes like rust and nickle.

"How long will this recycled air last for?" You turn to Eagle. "The way it tastes... I think they're running low."

Eagle nods. "The fact they have oxygen running despite the damage the ship has taken in nothing short of extraordinary. That, or they must have backups then."

"Where would they have backups?"

"Somewhere easily fortified and least at risk penetrating hits. Maybe in a compartment space below the bridge? Or near the center of the craft."

"We find the backups." You affirm with a nod. "No air, no opposition."

"I agree." Hong chimes in. "Even if it ruins the fun."

"And I concur." Eagle then states.

You nod again. "Then let's move. The longer we stand around, the sooner we risk letting them get communications back online. How long do you think they'll get everything sorted, Eagle?"

"At least... maybe within an hour." She taps her chin thoughtfully, her cybernetically enhanced mind working miracles. "Give or take."

"Then we get the backups in half that time at least. Move out."

~

It was easier than expected to find the backups. A dead body in the hallway revealed that the poor bastard was an officer, and he had a map.

The backup air tanks and filtration systems are located in the center of the brick ship. Heavily reinforced to prevent external damage and well guarded. There is only one door in, and out. And that door is guarded by a pair of Stalkers. Heavily armed and armored robots that can tear a man limb from limb. They can even give Pilots trouble which is why they're so terrifying. Anything that can deal with a pilot, that isn't another pilot, is usually a bad thing. Like Prowlers. Fuck those damn giant jungle dogs to the pits.

How do you deal with the Stalkers? You have at least ten feet to close in on them, but you have cover from around the corner.
>Shoot them.
>Make a new door. The damage the ship took must have weakened some of the reinforcement surrounding it.
>Write in:
>>
>>884931
Anyone have any arc grenades? If not, someone pokes their head around the corner and gets their attention. They'll either stay there to guard the door or try to follow whoever gets their attention. If it's the former roll grenades under their feet, the latter the bait ducks around the corner opposite of the other two and they shoot the Stalkers in the back. Either way they'll probably try to raise an alarm, so it needs to be fast.
>>
>>884931
What about making a new floor? Drop the floor out from under them. Heavy bastards will make a hell of a thud. Might even do most of the work for us that way. If we're still affected by zero G it'll take away a stable shooting platform and make it harder for them to hit us.

"New plan." You edge yourself back into the hallway. "We make a new floor. Someone will have to blow the floor beneath them. Eagle, you have the Pulse Blade. Be quick."

She nods and darts down the way you came. Hong has your back, R97 in hand and ready for the moment the floor will collapse.

>Eagle Wits check: 11 - Minor Success.

"Explosives primed. Blowing in three, two, one."

There's a click and an explosion beneath the Stalkers feet. The floor rises for a moment before it collapses and sends the two legs first into the bottom floor. But before they go all the way, they stop waist in.

The Stalkers figuratively panic. Caught off guard by the explosion. Their heads spinning violently as they wave their Volts around, attempting to find a target.

Good enough.

"Engage?" Hong says, a little hope and glee in his voice.

"Yes." You nod, bringing up your DMR and focusing your sights on the Stalker to the left. "After I fire. Go."

This is kinda sad. Like putting down a crippled animal. Except it's a robot instead of an animal.

Like I need to roll. I say on our way out we salvage one of them. If only for parts.

Seconding salvage, because really what's the point in rolling.

>Critical Success!

You pull the trigger and the familiar kick hits you. The bullet sails through the air and slams into the head of your target, piercing the red strip on its slanted head. The back of it explodes in a cloud of sparks, wires, and armor chippings.

Then something amazing happens.

>Critical Success Bonus!

The bullet ricochets off the wall at just the right angle to hit the exposed armpit of second stalker. The bullet goes in, but it doesn't go out. Not enough velocity so it simply bounces off its insides.

The poor machine can do nothing writhe as its torn apart from within. Finally, it goes still, slumping forward as white smoke wafts from the body, burnt wiring filling the air.

If Hong had a face, he would blink. "Wow."

"I meant to do that." You state professionally. "Now let's go." You tap your com. "Eagle, the Stalkers are dealt with. Come back here for breach."

"Yes sir."

"I got two frags." Hong states as he follows you down the hallway, jumping over one the dead stalkers. "No doubt they heard that. I think it's time we go loud."

"And I got my own." You smile, pulling a frag from your belt. "Oh, and screaming 'Frag Out!' increases the blast radius."

Hong is silent for a moment, taking a quizzical look at the grenade in his hand. "Sir... I think that's impossible. And did you drink before the drop?"

You chuckle. "I'm just messing with you, Hong. Now get ready."

>1d20+5 for Grenade Success
>And then a 1d20+11 for how well you clear the room after.

Hong has rolled a 19, and then a 21.

Bo3, highest roll wins. Crits negate crit fails and vice versa.

So you rolled a 23 for grenade clear, and a 22 for gun clear. Nice.

Grenades in hand you hit the button to open the door. It slides open and a flurry of bullets fly past you.

"Frag out!" Hong shouts, lobbing his primed grenade into the room with yours following.

You hear their screams and the sounds of men and machine scrambling to get out of the way. But the grenades were primed well, and their screams are cut short but dual explosions. An arm and a leg fly past the door, and you take that as your signal to clear.

Hong goes in first. Delivering death with his R97, showering enemies with bullets as you follow up with the Hammond. Both of you do excellent work. Spotting, and then swiftly eliminating any threats in your way. The defenders too haggard from their previous conflict to even put up an effective defense, or cry for help.

In under two minutes, the entire room was cleared of hostiles.

"Clear." Hong announces.

"Clear." You confirm from your angle, reloading your magazine.

Well... that was easy.

>Annnnnnd we'll call it here, gents. See you all next Sunday!
