/qst/ - Quests

>Hi I'm Eric, I used to make a lot of quests on /tg/, I'm sorry I didn't save anything. The quests all take place in The City, a surreal, dreamlike parallel universe. Acid Girls were a fan-favorite, so I thought this would be a cool way to introduce myself and The City to /qst/. The main thing to remember is that art is cannon; you'll see what I mean.

There is an invisible world overlapping our own, like a radio station that only certain brainwaves can Tune In to. We call it The City. Passing through it are dreamers, meditators, psychonauts, aliens, gods, monsters, personifications of abstract concepts, and anything else that feels like it. Enter the Acid Girls.

An Acid Girl is the echo of a powerful feminine psyche that passed through The City, tearing at the fabric of reality in the process. Acid Girls are powerful but often short-lived; they tend to be impulsive, passionate, and reckless.

This is Apriil the Acid Girl. Apriil took space drugs ONE TIME. Don't be like Apriil kids; don't take space drugs.

Apriil entered The City in the form a blazing comet with a purple trail. Anyone she passed over heard a beautiful song, of passion and courage and warmth. She sank below the horizon somewhere in the Dissociative District, in the Ego Forrest. She hit the ground walking.

All around her she heard The Symphony of The City, the soft interplay of rustling leaves and mad whispering of ancient philosophers. Below it all though, a deep warm undercurrent of Song guided her as she danced lazilly through the Ego Forrest, eventually happening upon THIS EXACT clearing. The Song leads onward down the path, but other things draw Apriil's attention as well. Off in the wild forrest (left) she can see the flickering lights of celebration. She can hear high pitched laughter coming from the minuscule fairies dancing on the mushrooms. She can hear a soothing harmony in the ripples of the pond.

A) Continue following The Song

Apriil gets on her hands and knees and leans in to listen. The pixies notice her and start to smile and buzz excitedly. They speak extremely fast, but to Apriil's highly-tuned ears allow her to hear them.

The pixies huddle together close to Apriil and start snacking on crumbs while they listen.

"Once there was an amazing little pixie who was best friends with a princess. The pixie was smart, and beautifull, and strong, only no one had ever told her that. She thought she was stupid, and ugly, and weak. All around her everyone loved the princess, and hated her, and so they made her feel bad about herself. The poor pixies only friend in the world was the princess, but one day the princess was captured by an evil wizard and taken far far away. The little pixie cried and cried, but still the princess did not return. The king sent his best knights and princes to save her, but still the princess did not return. So the little pixie dried her tears and made a sword from a blade of grass, and ventured out to save the princess.

Everyone told the little pixie not to go. She was too weak to make the dangerous journey, they said. But the little pixie used her grass sword to cut down the evil minions and wild beasts the wizard sent against her. She was too stupid, they said. But the little pixie solved the riddle that none of the King's knights had been able too, and unlike them she wasn't eaten by a sphinx. Worst of all, they said only love could defeat evil magic, and how was the princess supposed to love such an ugly little pixie? But when the princess saw the little pixie fly into the window at the top of her tower, the chains on the her ankles melted away. The pixie grabbed the princess and flew away, stopping only to seperate the evil wizard's head form his body. And they lived happilly ever after."

The pixies squeak and cheer, buzzing around happilly and play fighting, alternatively as the pixie, the princess, and the evil wizard. When they settle down a little, Mink the blue pixie decides to rest on top of Apriil's ear.

"Thatwasgreatthankyousomuchforthestorycanwehaveanother" she squeaks while the others buzz agreement.

Apriil hears bubbly laughter coming from the pond, then a soft voice form under the water.

"I think that's enough stories for today," the voice says kindly, while the pixies groan. A smiling head poked up from the pond, a foot from Apriils. It belonged to a girl who was green and blue and some other colors and had mushroom growing in her hair. She smelled like rain.

"Hello," she wsays to Apriil. "I'm Sprink. I haven't seen you before. Would you care for a swim? Or have my little friends grown on you?"

Apriil smiles sadly. "Actually I've got somewhere to be," she says. Sprink nods solemnly and the pixies pout. Apriil rises to her feet and brushes off the pixie dust sticking to her hoody. She cocks her head, listening for the Song, before once more setting off down the trail. It doesn't take long for her to notice the fluttering wings behind her; she grins as Mink the blue pixie decides to stow away behind her ear, taking an energetic nap. Apriil starts to sing to herself, a sweet melody, and the forrest around her leans in to listen. The leaves rustle with her crescendo, the hues of the plants seeming to pulse with her warble. When she find a key the forest likes, it starts to grow toadstools for her to walk on. She finds tht if she hums softly she will slowly rise off the ground. The path ends in a comfy armchair the size of a house, and sitting on top of that chair is a penguin in a top hat, reading a book.

The song seems to want to take her left, where the trees get taller. Farther forward however, she sees the flashing, colored lights that to her signal civilization, and she is starting to feel something like hungry.

Apriil starts to hum, softly at first, then growing stronger. She rises into the air as she does, the ground falling away behind her as she floats up, up into the trees. The penguin's monocle drops in surprise. The Song is pleased; its tempo seems to quicken as she floats gently but swiftly through the Forrest towards it. As the hours pass Apriil practices humming, learning how to move herself higher and lower, right to left, and faster and slower. The sun is starting to set, the golden light it casts getting replaced by the ultraviolet tones of the massive moon. Apriil can just make out a sparkling city in the distance, and she can tell The Song is strongest there. She comes upon a young elf in a house built into the canopy. He smiles and waves as she floats by.

Apriil drifts over to the elf's front porch, her bare feet dangling over the treetop city. She flips back her hair, sending plasmatic droplets of color onto the leaves around her. The elf bookmarks the small journal he's writing in and turns to Apriil.

"Yes, I love poems, I'd like to hear one," Apriil responds, her eyes drifting down to the tree city below her. The elf smiles, which is hard because he's already smiling, and opens his notebook. He clears his throat. "Tangerine, by Synthesis."

"I was taught if you can't find something nice to say about someone
Then ask yourself why.
Well excuse me if I prefer codependent narcissism to a ramshackle knife fight
I would just rather spend my time picking tangerines than picking shrapnel out of meat grinders.
I'm not looking to pick my battles, or that ten ton dead bolt you keep on your bedroom door
I don't mind tiptoeing barefoot on glass eggshells, but if you want to make an omelette, you're gonna need some blood.
Now, I came out swinging for the fences and you came out swinging from the rafters.
I bought the Brooklyn bridge and lit it up like the fourth of July while you told yourself "i told you so".
Maybe if we took a step back we could get some perspective.
Like, maybe you could see where your spurs caught me in the neck if you just stepped down off your high horse.
Or maybe its hard for me to see the forest for the trees
But honestly I can't see trees for tangerines."

Synthesis closes the notebook and sits in silence with Ariil for a while, sharing tangerines as the last light of the day sinks below the horizon. The sweet aroma of the fruit awakens Mink, who flutters down from behind Apriil's ear and consumes three times her own body weight in tangerine. The elf starts to pick flowers off of his house and blow them into air. The glowing roses fly around erratically while Mink chases them. Below them the elven city was starting to glow, and laughter rose up into the treetops.

"I've got another long day ahead of me tommorrow," Synthesis says as he stands and stretches. "I'm heading in. You're welcome to sleep here, if you sleep. Or you can go party with the tribe, I won't be offended and I'm sure they'd all love to meet you," he says earnestly.

A) "I'm pretty tired too, I should save my energy for tomorrow" Stay at Synthesis' house till morning

C) "I should really get going, I have the feeling this is going to be a long journey" continue on towards The Song.

>You been around so long and haven't got to pick.

Apriil stretches and hops up. "Ok, yeah. I'm pretty tired too, I should save my energy for tomorrow." She looks around for Mink but the blue fairy is already whizzing away down into the elven city.

She follows Synthesis into his home, where he gives her a brief tour, and explains he prefers to go by Synth. The house seems anachronistic and absurd; despite being built into a tree Synth has modern appliances in his home. He has a pull-out couch and a T.V. in the living room, where Apriil will be sleeping. He has a poorly stocked, completely vegan, slightly depressing, bachelor-tier fridge in his kitchen. He has curtains over his windows, which seem to show exactly what is outside the window except in the afternoon sun. He passes breifly past the abthroom, which has a waterfall for a shower, then his bedroom, which smells of vanilla, and on to his favorite room.

Synth's recording studio is truly a marvel, stocked with everything from alien midi controllers to pan flutes crafted by actually satyrs. He petitions she is free to use it to her heart's content, if only she would leave a recording before she departs. He heads off to shower before bed.

>Hey I'm back, had dinner and friends and such. idk if anyone's up.

Apriil's bare feet slide soundlessly across the hard wood of the tree house as she makes her way to the elf's room. The room is full of plants of all kind, overflowing with flowers and fruits, sunlight streaming in. The bed is small and unmade.

Apriil opens the curtains, and the sunlight disappears. She catches sight of herself in a mirror over a dresser, and grins. She sidles up to it and unzips her hoodie, watching the dancing rainbow lights that make up her skin with interest. They seem brighter at night, and they cast the whole room is a psychedelic glow.

She heard Synth pause before entering his room; perhaps he saw the flickering lights. She slid her jeans off and climbed into his bed, staring out the window. She heard the door open, and it was a long time before it closed and Synth walked up behind her.

The sex was very nice. The elf was soft but firm, small but very expert, very experienced, and a very compassionate lover.

Apriil sat smoking something while Synth slept quietly beside her, thinking.

A) Curl up with Synth and go to sleep.
B) Leave; you don't really think you HAVE to sleep
C) Play in the recording studio

>Bumping cause up. Apriil's power is the deliberately vague "Music". So far we have seen this expressed a few ways.

>1. Apriil can hear a beautiful Song that attracts and guides her
>2. She can understand and speak Pixie, and could hear Sprink talking underwater. She seems to have excellent hearing.
>3. When Apriil sings, the forest reacts, and if she sings something it likes, it will make toadstools for her to walk on.
>4. When Apriil hums, she will float, and has gained some measure of control over what direction she will go.
>5. Apriil is able to walk "soundlessly" across Synths' floor.

Apriil dresses and leaves silently, feeling fulfilled. She sits on Synth's front porch, singing softly to herself, watching the flowers change colors as she does. Before long Mink appears, fluttering excitedly.

"HiAprrilIhadSOmuchfuntheyhadallkindsoffruitsandIfoughtaLEPRECHAUNandthenikissedhimandiheardastorythathappennedalonglongtimeagoinagalaxyfarawayand-" Mink says in her high speed, high pitched language. Apriil answers her in pixie.

"Hi Mink it's good to see you because I'm about to leave I have to go somewhere and I'm not sure where but I'm sure it's somewhere in the city over there and the journey might be dangerous and I'm going to leave the forest so if you want to stay-" Apriil says before getting interrupted (which is not rude in Pixie).

"No WAY! I wanna go with you and hear more stories and vanquish more leprechauns and keep you safe and rescue you in case you get captured, like The Little Pixie and the Princess!" Mink squeaks. Her face is set in a pout, getting ready to go full temper-tantrum. Apriil sighs, which apparently is a signal to Mink that she has won, and she buzzes around happily.

"Let's get going, then," Apriil says. She closes her eyes and starts to hum, her body slowly rising into the sky above the tree tops, drifting with warm night wind, steadilly following the pulsing vibrations of The Song.

*********
Down in the elven city, a hooded stranger is asking questions.

Somewhere on the Northside of the City, a girl with stained glass wings races to deliver a message.

All across The City, people are talking, and the purple comet from earlier that morning is a popular topic.

When the sun sets on The City, the Dissociative District truly comes alive. Philosophers argue at alien strip clubs over hits of ether, Tibetan Monks clash with Robotripping teens in underground fight clubs, and everyone has to stop at the famous K-Hole Bar and Garden. The Dissociative District is a little shady, a little depressing, like everyone just wants to forget who they are for a night.

Apriil's bare feet touch down on the asphalt outside the Ego Forest. The sky was starting to look a little crowded; there were fireworks, bodies floating gently through the air, pixies and leprechauns zooming around drunkenly, and the sounds of swords scraping against each other as a pair of flying anthropologists fought to the death over a minor disagreement, hurling war cry's at each other. So Apriil continued through the streets of the Dissociative District on foot.

As she walks through the dense nightlife crowd, merchants hawk their wares.

A young man with an octopus head approaches.
"sup girl what you need? I got that Chew-Z, I got those Kalaxian Crystals, I got whatever you need senpai."

A three-eyed alien hands her a card that reads
"Possibly-Live Girls at Schrodinger's Gentlemens Club"

A group of inebriated nuns catcalls her from the patio of a nightclub; the whole building literally throbs with the pulse of the music playing inside.

A fighter with a bloody nose catches her eye and winks. "Next round in an hour, love, at the Epsilon Gamma Omega party."

Apriil walks past the line of people and aliens and animals in top hats in front of the club. Mink immediately zooms off. Inside the walls are undulating in time the music, a kind of post-trance jungle whale-core. The crowd parts before her as she makes her way to the dj booth, and the dj, a pretty three eyed alien, steps aside as she walks up the stairs onto the stage.

The building shudders, then goes still, as Apriil presses a key on a synthesizer. She twists some knobs, and the note comes again, this time with a piercing clarity and spacey echo, and the building starts to vibrate. Satisfied, she turns to a beat pad and lays down the simple kick-snare pattern of a dubstep banger. She adjusts some knobs, and the kick start to hit like an atom bomb, and the snare sizzles in peoples ears. The walls of the building start to heave and swell. Apriil hits the note again on the synthesizer, this time letting it fall into a beautiful melody. The melody told of life, of passion, of wonder, and the promise of good things to come. The club starts to twist in on itself, the people in the upper levels giving a great "woooooah " as they are spun around. The building freezes for a moment as the melody reaches it's crescendo.

>Drop the bass
>>
Apriil breathes deeply, feeling The Song of The City coursing through her veins. Without hesitation, she plunges the microphone jack deep into her heart.

The bass drops.

The building twists in on itself and disappears from the street.

The lights start pumping x-rays and ultraviolet light in high doses.

The patron's skeletons are surrounded by pulsing neon light.

Apriil drives them wild. Slowly, with love and care, she brings them back, lowering the volume of The Song until the warped nightclub reemerges from it's pocket dimension, and the melody peters out.

The club erupts in applause.

Apriil is offered a nightly spot. She accepts. She isn't exactly sure how much she's getting paid, but it doesn't matter; she realized The Song was inside of her all along.
>>
>Epilogue

I hope you all enjoyed this "conclusion". I had planned for a longer Quest, but this just kind of felt right. This is just the end of Acid Girl Quest #1. It is not the end of Apriil, or even Apriil the PC.

Acid Girl Quest #1 is the briefest of introductions to The City, and it tells the story of Apriil coming into her true potential as an Acid Girl. Truly her "quest" to follow The Song has been completed, and ahead of schedule. Look for Acid Girl Quest #2 later today.

Please leave feedback, I'm very needy.

Remember that this is just advice from some random anon, and to keep true to your original vision for this story.

That said, a few pointers:

1.) You don't always need to frame your story around the pictures you post, and not every post needs a picture. While it is appreciated that you try to liven up your updates with visual stimulus, there are some instances in which I felt that the explanation you give for what's being seen in the picture doesn't contribute much to the world you're trying to build. I would much rather have the picture just be there as a base reference (for lack of a better phrase), and the world come alive through original description. However, if you really want your world to be strongly reflected in your posted visuals, then well done, actually.

2.) Music. If music is your chosen motif, vivid descriptions of sound, and the following effects of those sounds on the other senses should be woven in every description of every event of note. Since, in your own words the existence of an Acid Girl is short-llived, but powerful, there should be little room for meaningless actions, thus little dead space. Your descriptions of the protagonist's journey through the Ego Forrest, and the scene in the club are perfect examples of utilizing your music motif.

3.) Now just a bunch of random pointers. Learn the pacing of this board versus how the pacing was back when quests were still on /tg/, proofread every post, and good job for getting back into questing, I know it can be difficult.

The picture-as-cannon is a kind of fun way to confine myself, but you're right, sometimes things suffer for it. I spend about half my time writing a post, half of it looking at pictures.

The Music motiff was harder than I thought.

And yeah, /qst/ is different than /tg/, definitely, I think the pacing fits me better, ultimately.
