You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you were skirmishing with a small flotilla of Abyssals, in an effort to draw attention away from Saratoga and Hazelwood, who were busy trying to evacuate a freshly rescued shipgirl.

It was just you and one of your old nemeses, the Japanese cruiser Kumano, so you had to play this one carefully.

A few radar pulses tells you all you need. Three Abyssal destroyrs, two Ne-class cruisers, and one Ta-class battleship were incoming. A lot of firepower compared to your own two ship formation. Thankfully, there didn't seem to be any signs of air power. No doubt they were tied up by Saratoga's air wing.

"S-so how do we do handle this situation?" Kumano asks, her guns swiveling into attack position.

"Just keep moving! As long as we stay at range they can't hit us!" You yell to Kumano.

"But we won't be able to hit them back!" The cruiser points out.

"We just gotta keep their attention, now eyes forward!" You bark.

Kumano wordlessly nods and put all her power into her engines. The heavy turrets on her Rig swivel around and start pumping out harassing fire at the pursuing Abyssals.

You keep an eye on the whole thing with your radar. You could see the cruisers and battleships struggling to keep up, but the three destroyer are zooming forward. Being a bit faster that Kumano, they would catch up to her sooner or later.

Meanwhile, it's not like the Abyssals were taking Kumano's salvos laying down. They were responding with their own hail of shells and fire, which made Kumano's attacks look like a drizzle in comparison. Your radar immediately lights up as dozens of shells sail through the air.

"Kumano! Break to starboard!" You bark as your radar begins calculating shell trajectories, manifesting through your optics as transparent lines like spider silk lancing down into the water.

Kumano, to her credit, doesn't ask questions and she immediately swerves right. About a half second later, the first volley from the Abyssals rains down, showering you with water and sea spray, but otherwise not causing any harm.

"T-thanks!" Kumano gasps.

"Just doin' my job." You wink. "Brake!"

You two manage to effortlessly dodge the Abyssals' long range volleys, further frustrating them. However, the three destroyers are beginning to catch up.

However, you do notice something odd. One of the destroyers was breaking away from the pack. It was faster. MUCH faster. At this rate it as going to be on your ass in less than a minute!

"Keep moving! I'm gonna deal with a pest!" You inform Kumano as you swing around to intercept your pursuer.

And that's when your optics get your first glimpse of her. As you suspected, it was a humanoid type Abyssal, meaning she was going to be a lot tougher than the regular ones. You wonder how the hell she could be so fast when you suddenly realize.

She has no legs.

Instead, she was just skimming about a foot above the surface of the water, like she was being propelled by a goddamn jet engine or something.

Geez, you heard the older destroyers talking about wanting to be "high speed low drag", but this was fucking ridiculous!

You the make eye contact with the Abyssal Destroyer Princess. She give a bloordthirsty grin, her eyes flashing that ice blue that chilled you to the bone just looking at them.

Hot damn she's fast! The moment you start firing, the DD Princess is already jinking and juking, dodging your fire. Scarily enough, she wasn't even losing any speed despite her hard maneuvering. Beads of sweat begin to pool on your forehead. If you hadn't had your own engines upgraded, this bitch would be sailing circles around you!

Thankfully, your fire at least forces her to keep moving, preventing her from being able to do much else. Unfortunately, you can see the other two Abyssal destroyers taking up flanking positions on Kumano. Their guns couldn't do much against her, but if they managed to get their torpedoes off, Kumano would be stuck in a really sticky situation. To her credit, Kumano has shifted her target priority to the destroyers, but you're not sure if she can handle them both.

Damnit! You couldn't just leave Kumano hanging out there. You swivel one of your torpedo mounts and let loose a volley, hopefully forcing the DD Princess to turn away and preventing her from firing on you. You then switch your attention to the closest destroyer, your engines pushing you at a speed that rivals the Princess'.

Fortunately, your torpedo spread does it's job. The DD Princess is forced to turn away to avoid your attack, giving you all the time you need to catch the regular destroyer from behind. One swing of your bat caves its skull in and sends it skipping along the water.

Meanwhile, Kumano pulls her weight and nails the other destroyer with a full salvo. The sheer number of 8 inch shells slamming into it completely disintegrates the destroyer.

The Abyssal DD however, did not seem cowed. You already got the feeling that she was trying to tie one or both of you down here until the heavy hitters could catch up. Already, you could see her torpedo mounts swiveling, the loaded torpedoes apparently chittering and vibrating in excitement.

"She's just gonna hound us all way if we leave her alone! We gotta take her out now or we'll be in a world of trouble!" You explain.

"Right! But she's too fast for me to get a shot!" Kumano warns, her turrets jerking back and forth as they try to draw a bead.

Your guns swivel and lock into place as they fire, sending streams of 5 inch shells at the DD Princess. You've got a better measure of her speed and maneuverability now, and your guns start scoring hits on her. The DD Princess, caught off guard, flinches for a brief second.

And that's all Kumano needs.

With a war cry that sounded like a dolphin getting tortured Kumano unloads her cannons, bracketing the DD Princess in a brutal barrage. When the smoke and mist clear, you can see the DD Princess survived, but just barely. Black oilblood gushed from rents and gashes in her body and Rig. Her eyes flash a menacing crimson red before she unloads all her torpedoes and makes a hard turn, intending to retreat to he relative safety of the approaching flotilla.

The torpedoes were exactly aimed at anything in particular, as it was a panic drop. However, they were huge hazards if you decided to try and pursue the fleeing princess.

"Shit, break break!" You yelp to Kumano as you focus on weaving through the thicket of torpedoes. Kumano does the same, though a bit more sluggishly. Thankfully, these small human bodies of yours made dodging these damn things waaaaay easier.

"Is... is it over?" Kumano pants as the torpedoes finally pass.

You check your radar. The Abyssals are no longer pursuing. In fact, they're actually sailing west at fully speed, back towards the strait. Looks like your backup had finally arrived.

"H--l. D- y-u r--- me?!" Your radio crackles with Enterprises' worried voice. Whatever interference the Abyssals had put up was starting to weaken allowing you to contact the the others.

"All right, I won't tell anybody." You nod, but with a sly little smirk. "But at least I know your weakness now!"

"Nooooooo!" Kumano whimpers. "A-are you going to have your way with me...!?"

"Nah, I'm already spoken for." You shake your head. "Besides, you ain't exactly my type. It's just something nice to keep in the pocket, ya know?"

"To be at the mercy of an American again..." Kumano sighs.

"Hey, buck up, like I said, I won't tell anybody, unless ya somehow piss me off something fierce!" You laugh.

"I'll, I'll keep that in mind." Kumano sighs.

At this point, the rest of the task force was beginning to sail into sight, and it looked like they've certainly gotten into the thick of it. Pretty much all of them had battle damage in some form or another, save the carriers.

"We walloped their arses right good, didn't we, Dorsie?!" A slightly crispy Kongou says cheerfully.

"I suppose we did..." Dorsie sighs, her desire to be rid of Kongou leaking through her normally stoic expression.

"Nah, she'd probably chew me out or something for going out on my own again." You roll your eyes.

"Ahahaha, ya don't know Sweet Pea at all, then!" Iowa laughs as she slaps you on the back playfully. "I can't wait to tell her all about it when we get back!"

"Wha-" You don't have time to finish when Iowa sails off to check on the rescued shipgirl.

You radar picks up an incoming JMSDF helicopter that's arriving to extract. It should be here in few minutes. You look around and see DesDiv 6 forming up a picket patrol with your sisters. Enterprise seemed to having quite the reunion with Saratoga while Midway and Kaga seemed to be in a rather heated debate. Dorsie seemed to have shaken off Kongou for the moment and was sharing a drink with San Fran, who similarly managed to escape DesDiv 6.

You float over to the rescued shipgirl, who's just laid down on the water's surface. Her Rig was practically shredded to pieces past the point of recognition, and her human body was covered in bruises and cuts and burns. She lay still, only her shallow breathing demonstrating she was even alive at all.

"This isn't just battle damage." Iowa seethes, her hands balling into fists. "Those fuckers tortured her."

"Why would they do that?" You frown.

"Maybe they wanted info out of her. Maybe it's because they're evil bitches. Either way, doesn't change what they did." Iowa's eyes flare briefly with anger.

"Maybe we should try talking to her..." You mumble. "Let her know she's safe."

"You might make things worse." Iowa warns.

Normally letting injured people rest is the optimal choice. But in this case, if she wakes up and then sleeps knowing she's with allies, I'd think she'd sleep easier. Less nightmares maybe.

>FATE POINT USED
>2 points remain

The girl suddenly struggles and thrashes, as if she was in fear. Did she still think she was in Abyssal custody?

"Whoa, whoa! Calm down! You whisper as you clutch one of her hands with your own. The warmth of your hand seems to reassure her, and one of her eyes opens every so slightly, red and bloodshot.

"F...friend?" She croaks.

"Yeah, yeah, I'm a friend!" You nod, feeling her grip tighten on your hand. Meanwhile, the extraction helicopter is starting to drop down to pick you all up. "My name's Hoel. What's yours?"

"Indy...." The girl coughs.

"Indianapolis?!" Iowa gasps.

Wait a minute, wasn't she-

"Sweet Pea is not going to like this." Iowa frowns.

Oh fuck, now you remember! Indianapolis was Portland's sister ship. Her only sister ship, in fact. As far as you could tell, Indianapolis had never "come back" like Portland did, which had always caused her some anxiety.

And yet here she was, alive but brutalized by her Abyssal captors. How was Portland going to react when she saw her...?

"We're going to have to tell her." You sigh. "No way we can keep this from her."

"You're right." Iowa sighs in conjunction with you.

Meanwhile, the helicopter has set down, hovering just above the water's surface as the other shipgirls begin to board. Enterprise and Saratoga carefully carry Indy to the helicopter, and you're pretty much dragged along because she flat out refuses to let go of your hand. Once you reach the helicopter, the medical staff on board take over, detaching what's left of Indy's Rig from her body and carefully setting her down on prepared stretcher. You really have no choice but stay next to her, your hand still clasped securely in hers.

"But I don't blame ya if you wanna let me be the messenger." Iowa grimaces. "Sweet Pea might get a bit... anxious once she knows..."

"I'll do it." You sigh. "I don't really think there's anybody else more qualified than me."

"Well, I don't envy ya, this is heavy stuff." Iowa pats you on the shoulder sympathetically. "I'll be around in case Sweet Pea gets uh... violent."

"Would she really snap like that?" You frown.

"Would you if ya saw one of your sisters like this?" Iowa points out.

"...you have a point." You concede.

That's when Iowa takes her leave to wisely distract the other destroyers from focusing on Indy's predicament. However, you notice San Fran approach. She casually sets next to you, surreptitiously lights a cigarette despite the disapproving glare of the loadmaster.

"Looks like you got saddled with a shit job." San Fran grumbles, puffing out a small cloud of smoke.

"Well, somebody's gotta do it."

San Fran just silently nods, then pulls her flask from her belt and holds it in the air in front of you.

"I won't blame you if you feel like you need a bit of liquid courage." She says. You guess this is her trying to be helpful.

"Thanks, but no thanks." You shake your head. "I need to be sober this."

"Suit yourself. That means more for me." San Fran shrugs as she downs the contents of the flask herself, holder her cigarette off to the side as she does so.

"Aren't you setting a bad example for your new admirers?" You manage to crack a grin.

"Thankfully, they're kinda distracted right now, and what they don't know can't hurt them, right?" San Fran carefully places her flask back on her belt. "Plus I need a goddamn drink because HOLY SHIT Kongou never shuts the hell up. I'm surprise Dorsetshire hasn't strangled her already."

"Well, she's British first." You muse.

"Crazy fuckers, if you ask me." San Fran shakes her head. "Anyways, good luck, Hoel. You're gonna need it."

"Why does everybody keep saying that to me?" You raise an eyebrow.

"You've never seen Portland when she gets angry?"

"No." You shake your head. "I always thought Sweet Pea was too measured and controlled to actually get angry."

"Hooooooooo boy." San Fran takes ANOTHER flask out from somewhere and takes a pull from it. "I forgot you weren't around when that happened. The shit I've seen..."

However, before you can ask San Fran to explain further, she's already wandered off to find somewhere more private to indulge in her vices.

Meanwhile, Indy is now fast asleep thanks to a cocktail of sedatives and painkillers the medics had given her to ease her suffering. Her hand remains gripped to yours. Even when unconscious she was too afraid to let go.

Shit, what did you get yourself into...?

>And that's it for tonight! As always, next thread is next week! And don't forget Infinite Stars on Saturday!
