As you brush your teeth, Winona stands over your shoulder, grinning. “... Winona?” The five of you stand in front of the mirror, getting ready for work today.

“Guess who just sourced a tank chassis for the Unlimited Demonstration!” says Winona.

“You?” asks Ingrid.

“Me!” Winona slaps her chest, grinning happily. “I got us the perfect chassis for building an Unlimited Tank on, and at a real bargain too!” You smile a little. Honestly, that's nice. Real nice actually. You just wonder what the chassis is. “And before you ask, no, I'm not going to tell you.”

“Oh?” you tilt your head. “Surprise then?” Ugh. Surprises.

“Surprise!” Winona happily says. “Tell you what though. You come meet me at the Tank Shop today after work, we can get right into it!”

“Are you even going to work today?” asks Josephina. “You have been working on helping the team lately so...”

“Understandable,” says Ingrid. “Just don't forget about us, Commander.” You nod. Of course, of course.

Right then, off to work!

-

You take a look at the expenses on your desk as Denise places down a mug of coffee for you. Hm, this mug is new. Other than that, the expenses for modernizing one part of the navigation systems isn't too shabby. It's expensive but not overtly so. “Captain Spruance wants to see you later today, Commander,” says Denise. Oh. Right, you did kind of do it last minute, even if you told Captain Spruance. But you did it with good intentions.

“Hm, hm, sounds like someone's in trouble!” says Caldwell smugly. You roll your eyes. Admiral Nimitz purrs, sleeping in your lap as you go over the expense report.

“Hm. What's this?” You pick up the mug of coffee, then turn it around to see the fun little label on it. “... #1 Commander?”

“You'd be surprised how many of those they sell here,” says Denise. “But I wanted to get you one since I saw it on sale!” You smile a bit. Thanks, Denise. You look over to see Tessa as well at her desk. Hilda is still assisting Griselda with finances back at the hangar. And Athena should be working on modernization today.

> “Let's go see Captain Spruance then.”
> “Have Athena start work on the rest of the nav stations. I want them all modernized.”

You and Denise arrive at the bridge, where Captain Spruance sits in her chair. She sips on a juice box, her little arms poking out of the big sleeves. “Right, right. So to put things into perspective, you're modernizing the navigations systems, right?”

You nod. “Yes, ma'am. Most of it is incredibly old. And the navigators are apparently overworked. I'd like to have a system where things are a bit more efficient and less arduous on the crew. As of right now, things could be working a bit better, ma'am.”

“I see.” She scratches at her head, looking at the report that her XO handed to her. “Alright, alright. Uh... here's what we'll do, Ellie. That nav station you're modernizing we'll allow for now. But right now, I'd like to consolidate our savings into the Logistics Department.” Oh? “We still need to replace one of the lost cargo ships from earlier this summer. Plus, there's the issue of expenses regarding our expansion projects deeper into LGA.”

“Right. Do you need my help with any of them?” you ask.

“Not at the moment, I have top girls working on it,” she says. “The best thing I can ask for you though. Next week, we have a wave of prospective girls who want to join the Naval Studies Officership program as Freshmen. So I want you to give them a tour next week of our little boat here, give them the sweet talk and all.”

“... me?” you ask.

“I guess I can do it, I'd be happy to, Captain.”

“Very good.” Captain Spruance smiles at you. “Listen, right now, your modernization is gonna go as scheduled.” She hands you the report on her clipboard, which you take graciously. “Athena tells me she'll have everything ready by Friday. Hopefully once that's done, that particular Nav station will be a test bed for future modernization and renovation.”

“Is there anything you wish for me to do now, Captain?” you ask.

“At the moment?” She rubs her chin, thinking. “Not really no. Though, Ellie. I will say, you've done a fine job even with the vacation days and the sick days you've taken off. You needn't worry yourself with trying to impress me.” You smile a little, embarrassed. Oh, Captain. “Anyway, go back to your office, just review the reports, make sure everything is in order. And then we'll-”

“Captain!” One of the bridge techs, Dana Rockwell you think, looks back at you all. “Captain! Captain! Captain!”

“What!? Dana!?” yells Captain in frustration. “You only need to say it once!”

“It's one of the repair crews in Block 1!” says Dana. “They're reporting another leak popping in the bow.” Leaks?

-

-

The Officer in charge of the repair crew was an Ensign MacTavish from Naval Studies Engineering. “Here's the leak!” In the port bow section of the ship of Block 1, near to one of the agriculture fields in fact, you find your leak. It was a six foot long split in the wall, currently being pig welded over until real equipment showed up to fix it. “We have dive teams working on getting the outside part of it fixed over, but with the speed we're going at, might be a bit of time.”

“What do you mean?”

“We can't exactly repair outside damage on the move, current and everything washes away equipment,” says the girl. “Plus, submarine drones we own aren't up to the task yet, we still need to fix those up for repair duty.”

“Anything I can do?” you ask.

“Yeah. Actually, we need some help.” The girls welding it over get sprayed by a bit of salt water, and they quickly get to pulling on their dry suits completely. It's cold even in the middle of summer. “I think we could use another shift to ferry us in some metal and get this thing fixed faster. And I think three shifts could have this thing done before quitting time.” Right. Leaks are always shit to fix, could take days to completely fix one over six feet in length. This one at least is on its way though.

Ensign MacTavish grins. “Alright!” She punches your arm, grinning happily. “Let's go, hehehe!” You glare at her. “... right, let's not punch each other. Okay. Who are we getting?”

“I'll get Ensigns Carver, Howell, and Franks on it. Denise?” Denise nods, pulling out your Officer's Pad and handing it to you. You quickly send out the call to them. “Hopefully they come, we have this done before quitting time.”

And you did have it done before quitting time. “Thanks for thinking of me, Commander.” Carver smiles at you happily.

“Just needed someone competent as all.” She blushes a bit, obviously really enamored with the idea of being competent.

“I should head to the hangar for now. I got some girls who are ready to train to meet me there,” says Carver. You nod. “Thanks, Ellie!” She waves goodbye, happily skipping to the hangar.

“Ellie, Ellie!” Denise stops up her Kettenkrad on the curb, and allows you to dismount. Winona happily runs over to you, a satchel on her hip and a toolbelt around her waist. “Come on, time's a wasting! You can come too, Denise!” She takes your hand. Hey! Wait, hold up a second! She starts dragging you along into the Tank Shop's parking lot. “I've got something real cool to show you!”

Poking out of the Tank Shop is its current owner, Huxley Mishka. “Winona! Your chassis is around back, I already arranged for transport!”

Lisa Cowell as well stands outside, glaring skeptically at Winona as the three of you start walking around the building. “Unlimited. Ew. How does somebody like something that strange and awkward?”

“Lisa, don't put yourself down like that.” says Huxley.

“You- WHAT!?” Lisa blushes intensely. “Go fuck yourself!”

“Wouldn't want to put you out of a job-”

“STOP IT!” she screams. “AUGH!”

Winona grins. “You're going to love it! It's great, it's great! It's perfect!” Now you're starting to get a bit hyped.

Then you see it.

It's the sorriest looking chassis you've ever seen. It appears to have been once a Panzer IV. But no turret, no armor, no suspension, no engine, no nothing. And what's worse, there's rust everywhere. If this thing were a dog, you'd shoot it and put it out of its misery.

Winona grins. “What do you think? Do you love it or do you love it?”

“I uh... it's a fixer upper,” you say. “Blank canvas.” Winona nods, increasingly getting happy with your approval. “Plenty of room for error and mods. I just hope you got it cheap.”

“7k,” she says. “I had to do a lot of favors for some girls down in my shift and I had to take out a loan with the bank as well, but overall.” She rubs her hands together. “I'm genuinely pleased. We can even start ordering parts today!” Winona wraps her arm around you. “Think about it, Ellie! You and me, Tankery Unlimited buddies!”

“Right, right, uh...” You fold your arms. “So how does this work exactly? Do we just slap things on and see what works?”

“Well, no. I mean, I know we don't have that kind of money.” She snaps her fingers. “I think however, we can get away with a few things.”

“What do you mean?” you ask.

She points down the way. “... the boys have a scrapyard for shot up parts of their planes that get too damaged during practice. They toss them away to be recycled? I think a bit of the old womanly charm might get us some heavy metal parts, maybe even some guns too! We grab the metal, we find a place to melt them down, boom! You, Denise, and Winona ride up in the Kettenkrad to the Skycraft training grounds, where the boys' Spitfires, Hawks, and Hudsons all are lined up to be washed and fixed up for another upcoming training spar. The guards wave you through when they see your rank. They seemed skeptical, but you made sure that you'll be able to talk to the boys in person. And that means having to come into where they live.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2mJUjBE4U0

The loud metal rock music playing as they wash their planes is already sending chills down your spine. The minute the boys get one good look at you though, they all stop what they're doing to see. A bunch of girls in a place like this. You shudder. Ugh.

“Wooo, look we got here! Hey, little schoolgirl, I'm a little schoolboy too!” They all laugh, grinning as you approach. “Oh shit, it's Elodie Zumwalt!” They immediately stop laughing, going back to their cleaning. Yeah, that's better you mooks. You dismount off the Kettenkrad, then look around.

“Anyone know where I can get some scrap metal?” you ask.

One of them points to Jack as he cleans his Hawk. “Ask Jack.” You nod to him, then start walking over to Jack. Jack is busy cleaning up his Warhawk, washing the hull thoroughly with a wet rag, shirtless and everything. He's surprisingly pretty well-built actually. You turn to Winona and Denise, who are absolutely gobsmacked. Oh for fucks sakes, girls. They're just muscles! It's the human body! People see that all the time!

“Well, well.” Jack smirks, sitting down on his wing, looking at you three. “What can I do you girls for? Need another paint job on your tanks or maybe you cruising for a date?”

“I need scrap metal,” you say. “I hear you have plenty of it.”

“What for?” he asks.

Winona says, “I'm building a tank for the Unlimited league. Ever heard of it?”

“I have,” says Jack. “Skycraft's got a nascent one. Not very popular. Planes aren't as receptive to creativity and mods like tanks are. Loads of Crimson Skies fans though. So, that's all you need?”

You nod. “That's right. Can you do it?”

He holds up a finger. “One condition.” Oh great. You roll your eyes. He points out Jeep Jockey, napping in his jeep, magazine over his eyes. “Take him with you when you carry the scrap out. Show him a good time?”

Winona blinks. “You want us to take him on a date?”

“He gets lonely out here, guys don't really talk to him since he ain't a pilot, I can't babysit him all the time,” says Jack. “You don't even have to make it a date, girls. I'm just doing him a solid. Can you do that? You can take as much scrap as you need.”

You sigh. “Fine. But never again.” Jack smirks incredibly smugly. “Don't you look at me like that. I do this under duress.” You huff, walking off and towards his jeep. Jeep Jockey naps peacefully under the sun, his sleeves rolled up on his jumpsuit and his hat settled on the gear stick. “Jockey. Jockey!” No response. You kick the jeep.

“HEY!” he yells out, the magazine flying off his face, glaring at you. “Who the fuck kicked my jeep!?”

Winona smiles. “Jeep Jockey. We got a job for you, want to help us?”

He squints, then grabs the wheel. “Uh. I guess. What do you need?”

“We need to move some scrap metal. Can we use your jeep and the trailer too to move it?” you ask. “We're grabbing it out of your scrapyard.”

“Oh. Yeah, okay. I guess. Get in.”

Denise grins, stepping into the back. “Wow! A really Willys MB!” She points to the gear stick as Jeep Jockey pulls his hat on to shade his eyes from the sun. “Oooh, a manual transmission too! I've always wanted to learn manual!”

“It's the only way to drive a car. Here, come on. I'll teach you.” Denise sits in front before you can get in.

“Hey, I was going to-”

“Now to start the jeep, there's a starter on the floor, no keys you see,” he says. He taps his foot on the floor, and you can hear the engine running. Denise looks on in absolute awe, happily paying attention. Ugh, fine, you'll let her have her fun.

-

-

Now, the big benefit to having a boy around is that he can do the manual labor. He shoves quite a lot of scrap metal into the jeep trailer and into the back as well. That meant you're probably going to have to ride on the hood all the way to the Shop where you'll have the metal melted down as well. “You know,” says Jeep Jockey. “Shitton of metal here, you girls want all of it?”

“We'll take what we need,” you say.

“Well. If Jack says you can have it, I guess you can have it. We usually throw this metal into the recycler anyway but we but we just buy spare armor plates instead,” says Jeep Jockey. “So... what did you girls need this for?”

“We're build a tank for Unlimited Tankery,” says Winona. “Ever hear about it?”

“Oh. Yeah. I hear JWC practices it. They got a pretty good Skycraft program you know,” he says.

“JWC has a skycraft team?” you ask.

“Yeah. You should see it. It's like a circus,” he explains. He shoves the last of the metal in. “Alright, that's the last of it. Get in.”

“Can I drive?” asks Denise.

“Do you know how to drive stick?” asks Jeep Jockey. Denise nods violently. “Alright, you can drive. Give me a bit of rest.” You thought earlier you might have to ride on the hood, but you find a bit of space in the back with the metal. You are not going to ride on a hood, it's unsafe frankly. So you squeeze into the back with Winona. Jeep Jockey looks back at you. “Uh. Denise drives well, right?”

-

-

You, Jeep Jockey, Denise, and Winona wait at the Shop. There they have the facilities to melt down scrap metal and allow it to be used for your chassis as its thick armor. Winona pulls out her blueprints of the tank, placing them down on the hood and checking them every second of the way. “Winona.” Jeep Jockey looks at it. “What in the hell are you building?”

She holds up a finger, smirking. “The best damn tank ever! Here we're going to have about 100mm of armor, I want it solid, no bolted on stuff. Side and rear might suffer a little, but eh. Suspension, I want to see if I can salvage something from something modern, Horstmann suspension, yeah?”

“What are these big squares on the turret?” You fail to mention the turret is from a Panther tank too.

“Rocket pods,” she says. “See. The BT-7 has a variant that fires tank torpedoes? Those pods fire those. And the main gun, I'm thinking we go Schmalturm, and with a Schmalturm, an 88mm gun. And finally, the engine!” She snaps her finger. “We might have to length the whole tank, but I think a Perkins CV-12 diesel engine 26 litre V12. Produces over 1,200 horsepower. In fact, forget the 88...” She pulls out her pen then sweeps a line through the gun. “We can steal the L30A1 120mm rifled while we're at it with stealing things from a Challenger.”

“Jesus.” Jeep Jockey folds his arms. “It's a monstrosity but I'm just enraptured by it.”

“I know,” says Denise.

We fail forward, that's what we do!” This is absolutely insane. But you suppose it won't hurt to humor her. You will have to ask her later how she's going to source this equipment.

Huxley pokes his head out. “Your metal's done. Want to borrow the welder and the rivet guns?”

“You bet!” Winona runs inside. The rest of you step in as well to see the chassis of the Panzer IV. There, Huxley has not only melted the scrap metal down, he has also formed the plates needed to be attached to the tank. Nice of him to do that honestly. Lisa and another female mechanic watch from the side, bemused a bit by the scope of this plan. “So. I think we start with the front plate, what do you think, Huxley?”

“Front, side, side, then rear, simple enough,” he says. “If you're planning on that big engine, we will need to lengthen it I'd say by two road wheels, maybe even widen it a bit. So here's what I'm thinking, we do this by chapters. We get measurements first, alright?”

“Alright!” says Winona. “By the way, do you know where I can source the gun and the engine from a Challenger 2?”

“... we can discuss that later,” he says.

“Great!” Winona looks at her tank eagerly. “This is going to be great, I can feel it!”

Huxley says, “Winona. Right now, I want you to clean the rust and the shit off the chassis for me. I'd have Benny and Lisa do it but uh...” Lisa shakes her head, as does Benny. “They're not feeling up for it today. Can you do that?”

“Right!” Winona salutes. “Get the hose, Denise!” Denise runs off. “Ellie. You done me a solid.” She pats your shoulder. “Sit this one out.” She opens up her blouse, revealing the white bikini beneath it. Wa- was she just wearing that the whole day in preparation for this? “Let's whack some rust.”

It'll be good experience for when we have to weld our own tanks back together.

Well, I guess we could somehow find the money by stuffing ourselves into bunnysuits and take photos if we don't mind our rep. going down.

> Walk around the Tank Shop, been a while since you've been in here.

You take a walk around the Tank Shop. At the counter, Lisa reads a book of her own, her legs kicked up on the counter, inattentive to you. A lot of paraphernalia here for tanks, spare road wheels, tracks, even the licenses for specific ammo types, guns, engines, the works. This was a Tank Shop through and through. You walk up to the counter. “Uh, Lisa, right?” you ask.

“Yep.” She looks at you, shutting her book. “See something you like?”

“No, no, I just... does Griselda shop here frequently?”

“Only for parts and stuff. Otherwise she goes to that Russian guys,” says Lisa.

“Oh, you know him?” you ask.

“Of course we do. He's that Russian fuck that swindles customers from us,” she says. “At least the NATO customers. Most ITL People come here.” You nod at that. “I hear Griselda is in some financial trouble though, that all good?”

“I got people working on it, but I could always use more help if you're offering,” you say.

She shrugs. “I would, but I don't think Gertrude would approve.”

“Ger-...” You blink. “Gertrude.”

Lisa leans close. “Between you and me. I think Gertrude kind of has it out for Griselda's NATO team. I don't know what it is. Maybe it's because Griselda won't let her help or something, maybe it's sibling rivalry. It used to be that Gertrude wanted to help out with the team, nowadays...” Lisa sighs, leaning back. “Those two girls have gotten real toxic lately. Battle of the egos, stuff like that.” Ah, you see. “By the way, send Griselda my condolences for her injury?”

“I will,” you say. “By the way, uh... what do you make of Winona's Unlimited thing?”

“Is she self-financing?” You nod. “There's no way she'll get that built with her own funds. She'd have to sell an arm and a leg. It'd take you months to build up that kind of money, if you were making hundreds of dollars a day.” She points to you. “My advice: give that shit up. Tell her to chase something realistic like... actual Tankery. That's just me though.”

“We're going to do it,” you say. “It's a passion project, at least for her. We got time. And besides, she really wants to do it. I imagine she'll burn through billions if it means getting to do Unlimited.”

“Yeah. Guess I can't knock the enthusiasm,” says Lisa. “Tell you what though. If Griselda or Winona need advice on finance stuff, tell them to come to me, alright?” You nod, smiling at Lisa. Wow, that's real nice of her. “I'd be happy to help.”

“Sure, sure thing.” You shove your hands into your pockets. “Um, one more thing, Lisa.” She turns her head up, curious. “How exactly does Gertrude's team make money?”

“Shitloads of sponsorships. I noticed GrisGris got the greenlight on Yutani a week or two ago, but between that and the Griffiths? And the fact that they have to do repairs themselves.” Lisa places a hand on her heart. “Let me say that I have infinite respect for Griselda. She's paying a lot of money for things that we got for free in the ITL. Plus, Gertrude does a lot of favors for people. Sometimes they offer money. Griselda does the same but she doesn't take money.”

“What?” You tilt your head. “She doesn't, why not?”

Lisa shrugs. “Fuck if I know, ask her. I think Griselda's just being a nice girl though. Thing about Griselda is that she's way more like Gertrude than she probably thinks. The two of them love helping people in need. Anyway, I'll let you go. Anything you need?”

“Nah, but I'm sure Griselda will find something.” Lisa nods at that.

With that, you step back into their garage, where you see Winona has more or less completely scrubbed the chassis clean. She wears only the bikini top and some hot pants, grinning as she washes out the last bit of rust. “How about that?” she says. “What do you think?”

“Looks great,” you say. You smile a bit. Now that you do think about it. That passion project is coming together quite nicely.

Winona naps in the back of the jeep with Denise. The two of them sleep as Jeep Jockey drives the three of you back to the Tank Hangar at night. The rest of the time you spent at the garage was spent sorting out new materials to be ordered, along with placing in the new welds for the armor plates. That'll be done by Winona in her own time, with Huxley and his crew helping out. “I gotta say, never seen a girl that ambitious,” says Jeep Jockey.

“Tankery does that,” you say. “It really inspires people, you know?”

“Yeah, I guess,” he says.

The jeep parks up by the Tank Hangar, with the door opened up to reveal the tanks well under work by their crews. It's about to lights out though. So you step out and move to wake Winona and Denise up, but, “Hey, Ellie.” You stop, looking to him. “Listen. Is... is Jack telling you to hang out with me because he feels sorry for me or something?”

“Sorry? No. But he knows you get left out of things. He just wants you to have fun.” You shrug a bit. “But hey, you're okay in my book far as I'm concerned, Jockey.”

He looks down at the steering wheel. “Well, that's... I guess that's reassuring. I was suspicious considering most girls wouldn't give me the time of day anyway,” he explains. He sighs, sitting back in his seat, while you stand there awkwardly. What do you say to him? You don't know how boys work. All that macho stuff. “Well, thanks, Ellie, I guess.”

“No problem,” you say. “You're an alright guy, Jockey. Don't let it get to you.”

“It does get to me though,” he says. “Being left out. Every time they go up to do a practice run, I gotta sit down on the ground, watch them do something I could do if... if I hadn't messed up my own run.” You fold your arms, looking down a bit. “I'm sorry, I'm dumping my personal shit on you, I shouldn't be doing that.”

“It's fine. We all have our moments,” you say.

“Well.” He leans back in his seat again, looking up at the sky. “You know, when those planes fly, I look up at them. I think, that could be me up there. You ever think of something like that?” He looks to you. “When you're watching a game or a Tankery match. You think, hey, there's not much separating me from Miho Nishizumi or her sister. That could be me in that hatch, commanding that tank. That's the big illusion about sports stuff you know? Fills your head with hopes and dreams.”

“Well. Jockey, I assume nobody's given you a chance to redeem yourself considering your complaining about this,” you say.

“Coaches won't take a chance on me. You wanna know why?” You nod. He points down at the gear stick. “I'm the only fucking guy on the team that knows how to drive stick shift. Guess I should thank my Dad for that. But...”

“Jockey. You'll have that chance one day. You might not see it, but you will. And when it comes, you better take it.” That's really all you can say to him.

And to that, he smiles. “Yeah. I guess. I shouldn't keep you here much longer, Ellie. I'm sorry.” You nod, then look to Winona and Denise.

Who have the biggest fucking grins on their faces. You blush intensely. The fuck are they looking at!? They step out of the jeep, waving goodbye to Jeep Jockey.

“Hey.” He points to you. “Come by the Skycraft grounds some day, Ellie. This is our last month here, August and everything. Maybe I could show you around some planes or something.” You nod. You'll consider it. “Winona, Denise.” With that, he drives off into the night.

Winona smirks, leaning close to you. “You know, he is pretty cute in that fixer upper kind of way.”

“I'm going to kick your fucking ass,” you spit. She giggles loudly, hurrying back to the hangar. Hmph. Boys.

“Hey! Don't worry about it!” She winks back at you. “I know you're already mine, Ellie!”

> + 5 MORALE TO WINONA

“Would you-” You chase after her. She quickly hurries back into the hangar.

Goddamn it, Winona!

We'll see what happens over the month of December. But I hope you all enjoy and I hope you have some happy holidays as well.
