You thank the driver – a young man with freckles and a nervous twitch behind the wheel – as you get off the buggy.

The place was a lot more bustling compared to how it had been when you’d left… only, not the kind of bustling that you were so sure you were keen with – you didn’t remember signing off forms for the maintenance crew to do work here… and you hadn’t been told of the army chipping in, either. Yet, here they both are, fairies in tow, painting and doing up the walls of the buildings. The rubble was all but gone and the roads were at least clear now, with the addition of a few new trees – little ones – planted alongside the pavement. Not to mention the two new shops that had apparently taken residence in your absence.

Walking past one of the many barrels now littering the plaza and ducking past a stack of boxes with alien labels on them. You don’t remember these being around when you left, either. As you step down the main street you see your right-hand man chatting – no, yelling at several men who most definitely did not look like the ex-gang members that you’d previously hired. Fingers – as always – looks livid. The men, to their credit, don’t flinch.

‘Look, I don’t care how you do it! Tell the boys upstairs that the cranes ain’t reg! We’re stretched thin as is, and The Boss ain’t gonna be back anytime soon – you tell ‘em that if they wanna do this, they gotta do this our way because I don’t give a hoot who they think they frickin’ are. If they ain’t my ma or my pa, they can shove off and eat crow.’

You approach him as the men leave.

‘Fingers?’

An excited squeal is followed by an awkward – and weirdly weak – hug as your subordinate wraps his arms around you and calls out your nickname. He detaches from you with a relieved smile on his features, rubbing the back of his head.

‘I’m sorry, you can’t imagine how friggin’ happy I am ta see ya.’ He confides honestly. ‘It’s been crazy. None of the newbies listen to what I say, none of the army guys are – have you lost weight?’

Despite yourself, you puff your chest a little to emphasize the point.

‘A little.’ You shake your head. ‘Fingers, you wanted to see me about District Management?’

‘You damn right I do.’ He turns a little red. ‘Sorry, boss. Here.’

He hands you the pad.

‘Going a bit overboard with security, aren’t ya, Boss?’

You wave goodbye to some of the new recruits, who get ready to take their posts. There had been an influx of delinquency according to the report, and right now you felt that it was best for you to address it. With the two new small shops, there was a little bit of business running, but the place was still a far cry from what it had been before. Still, it was best to ease the fears of your new clients… and you felt that this was the way to get things rolling.

The Card Shop Baa-Chan gives you a respectful bow as you make your way back to the pavement.

‘It looks like we need it.’ You hand Fingers back the pad. You must have spent at least an hour chatting to the new arrivals. The late afternoon was fast approaching now. ‘Can’t have people harassing our clients and all that.’

‘Yeah, but – eh, you know what? We’ll cross that burning bridge when we come to it.’ Fingers tucks the pad underneath his arm as the both of you make your way back to the main plaza. ‘So, how was your stay in the hospital? The Admiral told us you were fucked up in some bad trainin’ do.’

‘You guessed right.’ It felt bad to lie about your latest exploits to Fingers… but walls had ears and you didn’t want any of your men to end up in the dog house because of your loose lips – or any of theirs.

‘You don’t look so bad to me, though.’ He grins, giving your left shoulder a playful smack. ‘If you ask me, I think you look a lot better comin’ back then ya did leavin’. How’d ya lose so much weight in two weeks? Ya should be givin’ tips ta those fatsos on the couches.’

‘I can’t take the high ground, really – I cheated.’ You sigh. That was the truth, in this case. ‘Being a Commander means you get a whole lot of better access to Fairy Magic than what the normal populace does, and, well…’

‘I thought ya got into an accident?’ He frowns.

‘I did.’ Fingers could catch onto the oddest things. ‘Losing weight just happens to be a side effect of the magic used to heal me up. It’s hard to explain, but that’s just how it goes.’ You scowl slightly. ‘It’s not worth it, though. I felt like I was dying for the first few days of the operation. I was vomiting blood and guts for three days straight.’

‘Dang.’ He whistles. ‘How’d ya get so screwed up on a trainin’ do that ya’d have ta be laid out for two weeks?’

‘When you don’t pay attention that generally would be the end result.’ You let out a heavy sigh. ‘So believe me when I say I was really, really lucky, given the circumstances.’

Ain’t nothin’ but fortune and fate that keep plans from turnin’ ta smoke.

You turn to Fingers, incredulous.

‘What? I read books too, ya know?’

It crosses your mind – almost embarrassedly – that it had been more than three weeks since you’d looked into the matter of the attacks on your men. You wonder, vaguely, if it was too late for you to catch up – it had been quite a while.

‘I’d like to continue the investigations, if that’s all right with you?’ You inquire. ‘I’ve been too busy to actually do them… but I’d like to take that off your minds – and off mine – right now.’

Fingers grumbles, lifting his pad.

‘What was that, Fingers?’

‘Nothin’.’ He says neutrally ‘We haven’t had much of a bother since ya got the curfew organized and the army guys started makin’ rounds, but… if you’re still tryin’ ta find what’s been goin’ on, I guess we can.’ He gestures for you to follow him, wearing an enigmatic expression. ‘Ya took the upper route, guess the only way that there’s gonna be any clues left, it’ll probably be by the alley into the main street.’

‘Any developments since?’

‘No attacks at all since curfew.’ The both of you walk down the main street. ‘I been checkin’ up on that old lady, though… she seems all right.’ You’re surprised Fingers isn’t a little harsher on the subject of the Old Lady, given the vitriol he spouted the last time. ‘Can’t believe you’d just let it go like that, Boss.’ He shoots you an accusing stare. ‘Ya left her in detainment for more than a week – how cruel can ya get?’

You turn a little red.

‘I didn’t mean to. There’ve just been so many – !’

‘Look, Boss, I ain’t questionin’ yer priorities and ya gotta protect us from the seas an’ all that jazz and I get it… but damn, ya couldn’t even be bothered ta have a look see how that ol’ lady was doin’? I had ta negotiate a transfer for her after ya just up and got yourself into that trouble wit’ the Navy.’ Fingers, to your surprise, chastises you. ‘I know ya got your own shit ta sort out, ya know, but if yer just gonna give us the shaft and just go an’ talk to yer girls instead of doin’ what ya said ya were gonna do, I’d really appreciate it.’

‘Fingers, I – ?’

‘Come on, don’t think I ain’t got eyes, Boss,’ He rubs his temple, throwing you another accusing gaze. ‘I know ya go around talkin’ ta ya girls a lot more than ya care for us and that’s all right, really, I – we – we get it, but ya just left us in the lurch for weeks and just dropped it into my lap before ya up and went, what? Shoppin’ in the city? Talkin’ chattin’ up yer girls?’

He sighs as the both of you turn a corner. He got you there – you had elected to bring Tenryuu and Iowa to town over prioritizing your the attacks.

‘We get it, Boss, but it’d be really nice if ya’d just told me ya’d be hangin’ out with ‘em more than ya were botherin’ ta sort us out.’

You hesitate to answer.

‘I screwed up.’ You admit, jogging alongside Fingers. ‘Sorry won’t mean much to you, so I’m not going to bother to apologize – I’m just going to do what I should’ve weeks ago… and hopefully, we’ll have things sorted out by the end of today, all right.’

Fingers eyes you curiously as you turn a street – this one still looked shabby, compared to the rest of the town.

‘Fine, fine.’ He sighs, defeated. ‘I think this is the first time I ever stood up to ya.’

‘Don’t make it a habit.’ You jest – he nods and you try to take the conversation further. ‘Have there been any developments at all in regards to the case?’

‘I let the old lady walk on. I think she knows something that we don’t – like you said – but I don’t think that she was behind the attacks either.’ He sighs, rubbing his bald head. ‘At this point, though, it’s less about protectin’ our dudes an’ more about gettin’ it over and done with. I don’t think anyone’s going to be making any noise with the army and people beginnin’ to come back.’ He turns to you, frowning. ‘That reminds me – there was a suit that wanted to invest in the little give-back we’ve been runnin’… and I told him that I’d have to wait until you got back before I made any decisions, but he made a really good deal.’ Fingers makes an encouraging sound. ‘Sounds like somethin’ we could be able to work out.’

‘That’s prudent of you.’ You nod. Some money into the District did seem like a good idea – you’re a bit more impressed that Fingers had elected to wait for you to make the final say instead of just signing off. ‘I would’ve thought that you would’ve been the type to jump on in and tell me the good news when I got back.’

‘I may disagree with ya sometimes, Boss, but I ain’t the type to go behind your back and sign somethin’ that big. It’s a lot of money that he wants to put back into the District. He was a little pushy, though – something about money rollin’ in, but he ended up agreein’ to wait ‘till ya got back.’ He shrugs. ‘I didn’t understand half the things he was sayin’.’

You grin.

‘I’m touched, Fingers.’

‘Yo!’

There were three men at each end of the street, all of them looking like bulls waiting for the barriers to lift up.

‘Aw, shit.’ You curse under your breath, wondering why you hadn’t been as attentive as you should have been.

‘Ah, dang.’ Fingers chuckles nervously. ‘Okay, so I was wrong about the remnants buzzin’ off. That makes us even.’

‘What you doin’ here, Fingers?’ One of them smirks, cracking his knuckles. ‘Lookin’ for a place to make out with your boyfriend?’

‘I’m here about several attacks on my men.’ You take a step forward, meeting his gaze. He’s a bit larger than you – and by a little you meant that he had at least two arms on your person. ‘I’m not throwing any blame your way. I just want to know what’s been going on… and if you gentlemen have seen anything?’

‘We ain’t seen nothin’.’ He sneers, snapping his fingers – the men behind you clear a pathway. ‘Now get steppin’ before we get in a real bad mood. Y’all newbloods thinkin’ you can run the town?’ He scowls at you. ‘Just ‘cuz ya got lucky with a swing don’t mean you own us. Now beat it.’

‘This was the spot where my men reported being ambushed.’ You press on, taking another step forward. Beside you, you can feel Fingers shooting you a warning look. ‘They were carrying… food from Mamiya’s. It was about three weeks ago, so if you guys can remember anything, it’ll be appreciate – !’

‘Look, I’m gonna be nice to ya because yer the biggest cat in the cage, so let’s get this clear: I ain’t talkin’ – and none of us are gonna so much as throw you a friggin’ whisper. We don’t do dealin’s with crapbaskets like you and we don’t take too kindly ta people who think just because they’re the biggest cat in the cage that they can go around bitin’, if ya get my drift?’

There are grunts of approval all around.

‘I do get your drift.’ You tone it down, nodding in understanding. He nods as well, but before he can talk, you take the chance to press on through. ‘I also have to insist, for the sake of my men – that if you have anything at all you’re holding back to say, that you better say it now before more people come around asking questions.’

‘For what?’ He spits on the side. ‘Loiterin’ ain’t a crime. You guys can’t even put a proper roof over our heads. I’ve seen how ya treat those damn turncoats – sleepin’ in rubble and shoplots, what kinda Boss treats his men like that?’

He jabs a finger into your face, his glare hotter than it had been before.

‘Hey, ya watch it, wise guy.’ Fingers growls, cracking his knuckles.

He rounds on Fingers, giving him a rude gesture.

‘I ain’t watchin’ nothin’. At least the last psycho cared for us enough ta fight for us – ya just go around and drop in like some sorta project manager thinkin’ they’re muscle.’ He snorts, flexing his massive bicep. ‘So I’m gonna tell ya again, ya metal-armed, playboy of a prick. Get steppin’ and goin’, or we’ll make ya.’ He gets right into your face, his scowl deepening as you meet his eyes. ‘Don’t think that I’m not above hurtin’ ya for throwin’ Granny into the locker… so if you’re not up to pony up some payback, I suggest you go.’

‘Granny?’ You latch on. The man, realizing his mistake, backs off a little, clicking his tongue. ‘So you know about that old lady we brought in a few weeks ago?’

He steps back fully, gesturing for the two men flanking him to remove you forcefully – you lift your prosthetic to indicate that you’re not about to be done in so easily. The both of them hesitate to put a hand on you, turning back to the man that you now know is their leader.

‘We ain’t say nothin’, player, but you bitin’ a little bit more than you think you can chew.’ He snarls. ‘We got beef, but we ain’t stupid. If you’re gonna keep pressin’, we can arrange a little dance.’ You open your mouth, but he cuts you off again, jabbing a massive finger in your face. ‘No? Then I suggest ya take that street and get back to your damn girls and yer boot-lickers.’

‘Right now she’s our only link to the attacks.’ You mumble under your breath. You didn’t feel like it, but you ‘It might be above your level of notice, but let me just break down what we’ve found so the lot of you can get,’ you emphasize the last word with a little flair, ‘what I’m trying to say. I’m not here to throw around accusations or drag your asses out of this alley if I can help it – but so far, we’ve only got one willing talker, and that’s her. She insists that she’s this so-called mastermind and all of us here – and I believe that you know this – think that she doesn’t have a bone in her body where she’d condone the kind of crap that happened to my men. But we only, at this point, have her testimony.’ You glare at all the ones in front of you. ‘We don’t have any other leads. Do you really want her back in the brig for something that all of us know she wouldn’t do?’

He looks flabbergasted, really.

‘You gonna tear an old lady from her kids twice?’ He bares his fangs at you, looming over your form. ‘I don’t know they bred you that cold, Mr Commander.’

‘You obviously care for her a good deal.’ You take a neutral tone. ‘This is a formal investigation – and even if it’s a small scrap, I can’t afford to let it go.’ You gesture to Fingers, who frantically waves his hands, not keen on getting involved. ‘Fingers was nice enough to be attentive with the details… she’s out now, but she’s still, on-paper, a suspect. Our only suspect.’

‘You sayin’ things that’re takin’ away your chances of survival, Mr Busybody.’ He smirks threateningly. ‘You be careful what you say next – don’t want to be eatin’ through a straw the rest o’ your life, right?’

‘That depends. You going to try and back that up, big man?’

Boss.’ Fingers takes a warning tone.

‘She’s covering up for someone.’ You build on your momentum, despite Fingers’s warnings. ‘I know that much. I can’t make a proper statement without you telling me what’s going on. Right now I have an admission from an old lady that you and I both know has nothing to do with this other than not wanting to get any more involved with The Admiralty than the rest of the town is. I don’t agree with that decision, but it’s not a deliberate attack invoking physical harm on any Admiralty personnel, which is what did happen.’ You rub the wrist of your prosthetic – he turns away, making you reach out even more. ‘Help me get to the bottom of this. I don’t want to put the wrong person in the brig. I want to find whoever’s responsible – because regardless of the motive, I had four guys beaten down in two separate alleys.’

He says nothing for a moment, before his shoulders quake and you suddenly realize you’re facing a mammoth of a man once again. Despite your previous experience with The Senator, a man who looked like he could do good on a

‘Ya really pressin’ on this a lot more than I would’ve given ya credit for.’ He raises his arm… ready to strike. ‘I told ya ta stop talkin’ about an’ ya just can’t keep yappin’!

He’s fast.

But he doesn’t hit you. He never intended to – but you can feel the power in his punch as it zooms past your ear.

‘You really want her back in the brig? This isn’t just about people being robbed!’ You throw him an accusing finger, glaring hotly into his beady eyes. ‘This is about my men being beaten up in an alley getting food back for their friends!’ ‘What kind of shitty low-life or desperate vagrant would someone have to be to rob someone of their food? You tell me, big guy! You tell me!

Seemingly confounded, he makes a gargling noise. The other men close in, ready to back him up.

‘So this is about steppin’? That it?’

‘This is about me doing my job as the administrator for the district and the men in charge of its restoration.’ You let out, frustrated. You’d let this stew for long enough – it was best to just get it out of the way for now. ‘I promised them that they’d have a place so long as they did their part.’ ‘It’s been a little bit of take on my part, but I’m at least trying to find out what’s been going on now.’

There is a long pause that follows, and the lot of them mumble under their breaths.

‘If I tell ya what happened… will ya let it slide?’ He offers – albeit reluctantly. ‘Consider is a personal promise on my end. Ya won’t be hearin’ no more ‘a this business.’

Fingers lets out a bark.

‘Yeah, o’ course you’d be sayin’ that now that the Army’s rollin’ in, right?’

‘You have my promise that I won’t throw anyone in the brig for this. I just want to know what happened.’ You say solemnly, a little niggling itch at the back of your head. ‘Being this far gone, I doubt that putting anyone behind bars is going to benefit anyone. Right, Fingers?’

Fingers snorts, cricking his neck.

‘Yeah, if you’d just cut ya pinky off and – ?’

You hiss for him to keep quiet. Reluctantly, he does. The large man looks to his men, who back off; there are defeated gazes all-round. He gives you one last glare before moving to begin his tale.

‘The MPs don’t like us – but they don’t like you even more.’ He jabs you in the chest – hard. Not so hard that you would topple over or as painful as The Senator had done, but violently nonetheless. ‘When the gang went their separate ways, the bunch of us that decided not to cow hid out around this district and the one at the other end hoping that the heat would die down. The people of this town, though, they remember a face – and they didn’t take too kindly to guys roughin’ ‘em up bein’ in the same food line as they were. After we got one spit in our soup too many, we just bailed… but we were still hungry, and we saw your guys havin’ a couple ‘a cans every night… and it wasn’t like we cared if one of ‘em got a broken jaw or nothin’, so we decided to just give ‘em a wake-up call, tell ‘em brown-nosers ain’t doin’ right by us.’

‘Ya fight like a bunch a robbers and ya think brown-nosers are beneath ya? Ya sure got some nuts sayin’ that, ya scrub.’ Fingers rounds on the man, placing a hand on your shoulder in support.

‘Watch it, Fingers.’ The large man gives him a rude gesture, which Fingers returns with a growl. ‘Not like I don’t care to sock your face either.’ ‘Yer wrong if ya think any of those guys under yer roofs are anywhere near good, Mr Commander.’ He smirks. ‘Fingers didn’t tell ya ‘bout the time he shook down an old man for some stew, did he?’

‘I was there, actually.’

‘Oh.’ He rubs the back of his head, his momentum siphoned. ‘Well, the bunch’a guys we beat up? They ain’t worth a damn ta care about… and like I said, the MPs like you even less. They actually caught on to us when someone found us in a danger zone… and let us do what we wanted. I’m not pointing fingers – no pun intended – but the MPs told us in so many words that as long as it’s your job being harder, they didn’t give a damn who we beat up.’

‘You’re telling me they turned a blind eye specifically because you were roughing my men up?’ You balk

That made a little too much sense – especially considering how The Chief had acted around you. You weren’t the most welcome presence at the HQ, at least.

TBC
>>
‘We just wanted some food.’ He shifts uncomfortably, rubbing the back of his neck. ‘Somehow, the MPs that didn’t have a particular liking for you saw it like we were doing these raids because they thought we were on the same page when it came to you – and we are, but we know how much you’d bring the hammer on us, so as soon as you ran a curfew we just stopped and did other things. The Army coming in actually helped us out – we didn’t have anymore reason to go for scraps because the new supply guys didn’t know us… we could actually start getting our fill from ‘em and no one’d bat an eye at us.’

‘A bunch’a petty MPs and a petty bunch’a losers who didn’t wanna own up.’ Fingers practically spits. ‘Ya ain’t worth a brig. Just a slug and an alley, ya fu – !’

‘So where does your Granny factor into this?’ You interrupt Fingers.

They all look reluctant… until one particularly fat man walks up to you with a guilty expression.

‘She was nice enough to give us a place to stay for a while. She didn’t care that we were thugs – just that we didn’t have anywhere else to go.’ He steadies himself, puffing out his chest as though bracing for a blow. ‘I was the one who took the second batch ta her after we beat up your men again… she caught on when she found out that the bao that we gave weren’t, well, wasn’t what you coulda found at a tray and out.’

‘What’s a tray and out?’

‘Where they give out food.’ He gives you an incredulous stare. ‘Look, she scolded us, told us that we were lucky that the MPs – and you guys – didn’t go out with pitchforks and said that until we said sorry, we… weren’t welcome back.’ He sighs. ‘We didn’t know that she was gonna take the fall for us, honest.’ He waves his hands frantically. ‘We didn’t know that you’d be goin’ ta her of all places…’

‘So you beat up my men for food – !’

‘Mostly for kicks.’ The fat man shrugs. ‘A lot of those guys in your little show are assholes. The food was a bonus.’

‘Fine, you beat them up secondarily for food, primarily for kicks, the MPs knew about it but encouraged it because they don’t like me even more than they don’t like you… and the old lady took the fall because she obviously cares about you enough to want to see you walk off scot-free.’ You rub your temples – this was a mess. ‘Anything else that I’m missing?’

‘What’s the recipe for those bao – ow!

‘There. We’ve confessed.’ The first man steps in, glaring at you again. ‘There won’t be anymore trouble; you have what you came for – and we’ll be out of your hair.’

‘How do I know you won’t keep up with this nonsense?’

It’s a genuine inquiry on your part. You did promise to let them go, but considering the bad blood that apparently boiled in this three-way grudge, it would be stupid of you to not at least get some assurance… even though you didn’t exactly trust his word as far you could throw him – which wouldn’t be very far, even with the use of your prosthetic. Still – a little bit of confidence in your decision wouldn’t be a bad way of easing your nerves, as titchy as they were right now.

‘I know you’d get to that.’ He crosses his arm, staring you down. ‘The Imperial Army’s running around – even if we wanted to rough up your folks a handkerchief more, we won’t be able to do it without the Army coming down on us. They wouldn’t care about any grudges – just that we were raisin’ more trouble than they’d like. We don’t have any quarrel with ‘em, and we don’t want to start one for another swipe at you and your pansy asses.’

‘That,’ the fat man cuts in, earning a withering glare from the larger man, ‘and that granny told us ta stop with the nonsense.’ He sneers at you, his hand trembling as he makes a rude gesture. ‘If it were up to me, I’d screw you guys over any chance I get for putting us in this shit, but I don’t want to be involved with you fogeys anymore than I have.’ He nods sagely. ‘I’m gonna just play my part until we either get a transport inland or until the town’s up and runnin’ again. Not like there’s much to change for us either way, but with most the gangs now gone, we don’t really have a choice.’

‘Who told ya to go and strike it out on yer own, ya dumb fu – ?’

‘Fingers, if you say another word, I’m going to tell Irako that you swear.’ You cut your subordinate off, holding your hand up to emphasize that if he didn’t stop trying to make things worse, you’d follow up on your threat. ‘A lot. In front of me. And that you’re keeping it a secret from her.’

‘Know yer place, brown-noser.’

You turn back to the larger man.

‘So that’s it? I have your word that you’re gonna just keep quiet until everything’s back to… well, relatively back to normal, anyway?’

‘That’s the about the size of it.’ He grunts in agreement, his eyes shining with disdain. ‘It’s not so much a word – I ain’t into that talk-talky-promise kinda crud, but I won’t be makin’ yer shit any worse than ya can manage it yourself.’ He smirks – at the both of you, this time. ‘Not that you need it, between you two dumbbells.’

To your side, Fingers mumbles profanities under his breath.

‘Do you know any of the MPs that allowed you to go hog-wild?’

‘They all look the same.’ He answers quickly – and gruffly. You don’t know if he’s telling the truth or giving an outright lie, but he’s definitely a lot more dismissive of the topic; not that there was something to hide, but more that there wasn’t even a speck of interest from him. ‘Same hats, same crappy voice and I don’t really care. All I know is that a bunch of ‘em talked to us and said as long as it was you that we were pulling the rug under, to keep up the good work.’ He sneers at you, crossing his massive arms again. ‘Besides, even if I did know ‘em, you think I’d snitch on ‘em, huh?’

‘No one’s asking you to snitch on anyone.’ You assure him; perhaps if you press him a little bit more, he could –

‘Sure sounds like it.’ He snarls again, but uncrosses his arms as he sees you unyielding to your initial inquiry. Giving a withering look again – to assert himself more than to intimidate you, probably, he finally concedes. ‘Never paid any attention – all I know is that someone reported what we did and we were told to keep making your job Hell if we could afford it.’ He snorts, smirking and taunting you. ‘Nothing left or right about it.’

You don’t fall for it. He just wanted to get you angry – you had enough of that from Nachi and her own snide remarks.

‘Nothing noticeable at all?’ You question him again – if possible, he upped the intensity on his glare to translate the annoyance he felt at your inquiry. ‘Like a mustache or a tattoo?’

‘Nothin’.’ He grunts, gesturing to the others, who shrug in response. ‘All the same an’ I don’t care which one comes with what agenda on their minds. I was just happy not to have my ass hauled into the brig.’ He admits, before handing you another one of his sneers. ‘Goes to show just how much they appreciate having you around, huh, Mr. Commander?’

‘No use talkin’ to these guys and their hoo-has, Boss.’ Fingers interrupts the conversation, shaking his head before gesturing towards the large man. ‘Most we can expect from ‘em is ta play the puppies until a big bad wolf comes ta town. Buncha pansies, either way.’

‘We weren’t the ones who fled right back to the skirts of the biggest wolf on the block.’ The man rounds on Fingers again – Fingers doesn’t back off, though. ‘So you better watch out who ya callin’ a puppy, ya lapdog.’

‘I got bigger bite than you do claws, big guy.’

‘Try it.’

The both of them lock into an intense glaring contest, but otherwise don’t do anything physical to each other… yet.

‘You’re free to go, then.’ You nod. There was little reason to hold them now… and you weren’t the type of person to back down on an agreement – especially being surrounded by half a dozen men who looked like they could eat you for breakfast. ‘No trouble left or right – I got your word on this?’

You hold out a hand in gesture… but the man doesn’t take it, looking at it distastefully before turning his nose up.

‘I don’t do handshakes.’ He turns on his heel, gesturing for his men to follow him. Looking over his shoulder, he gives you one last glare. ‘You better get steppin’ now – I think I had enough of this bull to stomach.’

As he and his men leave, you turn to Fingers, a little unsure how to proceed. You’d agreed to let his transgression slide – it had been weeks since an attack anyway and anymore would just burst the bubble – but the fact that the MPs would actively turn a blind eye to anything that did you harm, regardless of the parties involved, was a little… disconcerting. Fingers gestures for you to speak, adopting a confused gaze.

‘I’m a little worried, Fingers.’ You confide as the both of you walk back towards the plaza; Fingers only scrunches his brow, probably in further confusion. ‘I know that the MPs don’t have the right attitude when it comes to the men or the District, but to turn a willing blind eye? You heard ‘em – they went out of their way to make sure that the attacks kept up. Thank Heaven above we managed to get that curfew in.’

‘Well, Boss, we got that little mystery solved, at least.’ Fingers chirps in encouragingly. ‘What do you want to do now? I mean, I know ya said ya weren’t gonna turn ‘em in, but if you’re really worried – and I confess, it’s a bit of a mess ta me, too, why don’t ya go to someone who can do somethin’ about it? The Admiral guy’s supreme, right? Ya go to him and bing-bang; problem’s solved.’

‘I think The Admiral’s got more than enough on his plate.’ You grimace, remembering that there was still an ongoing inquiry. ‘I want to talk to the MP Chief, but I don’t know if he’ll laugh me off or just tell me to mind my own damn business… but there’s no one else that I can go to to bring this up. He doesn’t like me anymore than his men do.’

‘What about that KanMusu chick with the glasses? That Ooyodo gal?’

You remember Yuubari’s warning. You don’t know if you’d rather go another round with The Senator or drop another stack on Ooyodo’s desk for her to straighten out.

‘I’ll settle it with Ooyodo.’ You decide reluctantly. ‘If there’s anyone that can smooth this out – and where we stand with the MPs, she can.’

‘Man, I don’t envy ya.’ Fingers nods grimly, giving you an apologetic smile… and patting you on the back before heading his own way. ‘Well, good luck, Boss.’

‘You’re not coming with me?’ You balk, incredulous that he would abandon you at this desperate moment; he was going to leave you to the mercies of Ooyodo alone?

‘Ya crazy?’ His eyes practically pop out of his head – as if he would have considered the suggestion in the first place. ‘Throw me a Princess! I’d rather get caught in that maelstrom than deal with Ooyodo. An Abyssal Hime’ll kill me within a nano-second; Ooyodo’ll make my life a livin’ Hell.’

‘Fair enough… coward.’ You grumble, just audibly enough that he would be able to hear.

‘There ain’t nothin’ cowardly about avoidin’ that case, sir – I tell ya that much.’ He cackles in pure joy, waving his hand to your glare. ‘Just don’t bite my head off – I warned ya, alright?’

Finding a buggy was a little bit harder than you would have thought – you expected that with the town put together well enough, that they’d be running their rounds. It wasn’t until you reach the main street by the beach – waiting with several Army personnel – that you’re able to hitch a ride on one heading towards MP Headquarters. The Army Personnel get off at where the Command Tent once was – now the site of their own Mobile Command, and not five minutes later you drop yourself off at the Headquarters, where, coincidentally, you spy a frustrated-looking Ooyodo, clutching two briefcases and what looked like a knapsack, marching towards the main street.

‘Ooyodo, am I glad to see you.’ You greet her with a smile.

She doesn’t return it.

‘The feeling isn’t shared.’ She stares at you threateningly. ‘You’re taking a precious amount of time off my task allocation, so I would appreciate it if you would cut to the chase on whichever end of glad you are on in regards to seeing me.’ Before you can speak, she cuts you off again. ‘Is this something that we can discuss in public or do you want to get a back alley so we can work under the pretense of a make-out session?’

‘Um…’

‘That was a joke.’ You blink as she takes your hand, dragging you away from the Main Street into one of the smaller vacant tents. ‘Come here.’

She nods at you to proceed – you don’t try to take anymore of her precious time.

‘Ooyodo, you work with the MPs, right?’

‘A liberal choice of words, but you are correct.’ She nods. ‘I liaise between the main offices to ensure that things run when I am able to and handle disciplinary issues if they break a certain threshold. I am also responsible for the tea.'

She says it all in one go.

‘Ooyodo, a few weeks ago there was a schedule shift that was unauthorized – the intent was to wash hands of patrol duty in regards to my men; these attacks were synchronous,’ she adopts a thoughtful look, ‘with that schedule shift; I interrogated a suspect and confirmed that there have been goings-on behind the scenes related to the attempt. I’ve settled what I can on my end, but I’m telling you this because the MPs might try something fishy again and they need to know that we – that I – won’t stand for this kind of thing a second time.’

‘What do you expect me to do, Commander?’ She says flatly. ‘It’s out of my jurisdiction, as much as I wish to help you.’

‘I don’t expect you to do anything on my behalf – but you need to know that there are people still bearing grudges; ones that’ll impede on progress if they’re allowed to go un-checked.’ You sigh, frustrated. ‘As much as I dislike the MP Head of Operations, I don’t think he’s going to go out of his way to put my head on a pike.’ You look at her pleadingly. ‘You’re still one of the staff members that’re meant to smooth things between human resources and KanMusu personnel.’

‘It seems that you’re still adamant on giving me more litigation than I want on my desk.’

‘Ooyodo,’ you close your eyes, trying to get the issue across the best you can, ‘this isn’t about me or about you. I’m telling you this because I don’t think the base can handle anymore distractions like this.’ You stand firm with your issue. ‘I’m not telling you so you can launch an inquest or whatever it is to get people to testify. I’m telling you this because I won’t stand for any of these distractions on your desk or mine.’

‘Quite the busybody, aren’t you, Commander?’

‘Only when it’s affecting performance.’ You say gruffly. ‘Thanks to certain events,’ Ooyodo smirks at that, ‘we’re already under immense scrutiny – but I won’t stand for it if we’re wasting anymore time with these petty grudges. I can handle being disliked – I’ve got CV filled with NRs given out of pure spite, so trust me when I say I don’t care for it; but we’re rebuilding a town and trying to establish our defenses after a friggin’ disaster. Things may look hunky-dory, but do you expect things to stay that way if we’re not keeping the small problems in check?’ You put your hands on your waist. ‘We can’t afford it.’

‘Why come to me, then?’

‘Because you’re probably the only person with a foot in MP affairs that at least tolerates me.’

‘Prudent.’ She giggles.

She pauses.

‘I’ll see what I can do. Meantime…’ She gives a respectful bow, ‘this is for your trouble. Thank you for informing me.’

Ooyodo is appreciative that you have come to her on this issue. Even though she isn’t able to do anything right now, the disciplinary implications will go a long way in order to keep the peace better between you and the MPs… you hope. The first thing that hits your mind is – surprisingly – the thought of the Trainer’s angry face… and fist. You hail a buggy to take you back to your barracks. You’d realized that you didn’t have a change of clothes on you – and you don’t think The Trainer would have anymore to spare after dropping so many onto your lap with your sessions coming and going. It doesn’t take long until you’re in front of the compound – and with no one else in the immediate vicinity, you’re in, donning your track bottom and t-shirt with no distractions. None of your Division members seemed to be around… probably because they were busy on duty. Although, you don’t remember assigning Musashi – but Takao wasn’t in her room either.

Foregoing catching a buggy, you decide to get a start with your fitness routine. Doing some light stretches and flexing your shoulders, you begin your journey to The Trainer’s Gym. Along the way, you see the full extent of the repairs that had been done in the last few weeks – many of the seaside shoplots and blocks were still a ways away from being inhabitable or sellable, but at the very least, the patches over the cracks made a good show of saying that that things were as well as they could be. Along the street, you see more Army personnel than had been present when you’d left – and a smaller number of The Admiralty’s own maintenance crew members.

You pass by several MPs taking a smoking break by one of the barriers who yell out sarcastic insults – directed at your act of jogging and remarks about your battle with weight – and Army maintenance members rewiring a few lights giving you nods of acknowledgment. It’s not long before you’re back near Mobile Command, where you spy The Major chatting with The Female Sergeant that you had bumped into last time over some matter or the other. Even in the late afternoon, everyone just seemed so busy nowadays… and rightly so. You pick up the pace as you reach the end, feeling your fatigue already beginning to catch up with you.

You almost trip in front of The Trainer’s Gym.

Hands on your knees, you let out several breaths before staggering towards the door, where you see The Trainer stop mid-yell to take in the sight of you… wobbling in. You definitely lost weight – but you were also most definitely still unfit.

‘As I live and breathe, it’s the man of the hour.’ He grins widely. ‘Ready to get started, gonna get pumped with power?’

‘You know it.’ You raise a thumb before putting your hands on your knees again.

Someone yells – some launches a flying roundhouse from the ring, only to be blocked by their opponent.

‘Oh, hey, Commander, didn’t expect to see you here.’

You see two familiar faces in the ring, clad in pads and gloves, giving each other a good rough-housing.

Shigure does an athletic spin as Samidare – at a speed close, but not quite – closes in on Shigure. From this angle, you could see just how big the miss was as Samidare’s force causes her to almost roll like a barrel, using – or cheating, depending on one’s view – the ropes to push back her momentum to continue her assault on Shigure. Shigure doesn’t look like she’s bothering for an attack at all as Samidare swings – not wildly, but synchronously – with her kicks, making Shigure duck and roll, using one of the corners to re-position herself. Samidare makes a flip, leaping close to the ceiling before bringing down an axe with her heel… only for Shigure to, once again, dodge. Your dark-haired Destroyer makes herself a smaller target, her eyes intently focusing on the aggressive blue hurricane that was Samidare, following up her initial offensive with a wild haymaker, which – to your amazement – Shigure swats out of the way almost effortlessly, smacking the side of her sister’s wrists just as they’re about to make contact with her chin or chest.

She grabs on Samidare’s wrist… and smacks her with an open palm in the chest, sending her staggering back.

Samidare stops, regaining her balance and glaring at her sister, before dropping to her knees with a loud, high-pitched whine.

Why do you that?! Every time I get close you tease me and then you drop me just when I’m starting to win!

‘You never had the advantage.’ Shigure starts coldly, before biting her lip, as if hesitant to continue. She coughs into her fist, adopting a warmer approach. ‘We’ve been at it for two hours – if the opening’s too big, it’s obvious that your opponent knows you’re coming in to draw you in closer. When you’re fighting I-Class Destroyers or Light Cruisers, going for the quick kill is basic, but when you’re going up against a heavier class, Samidare, you’re going to have to go for more than power.’ Shigure chastises, making a thrusting motion with her elbow. ‘Your ammo’s not going to last you as long – you’re going to have to make do, you know?’ She shoots her sister a flat look, which has Samidare puffing her cheeks cutely. ‘You can’t just blast off a volley and call it a day if you wanna be bigger.’

‘Shigure, you meany!

Samidare charges in with another axe-kick… only for Shigure to miraculously – no, skilfully – catch her mid-air and throwing her onto the mat with added force, head-first. You wince at the sight – if they were anything but KanMusu, Samidare would have been killed.

Ouch.

‘I told you that a hit is a death sentence – we’re Destroyers, not Cruiser Types.’ Shigure chastises again as Samidare gets to her feet. ‘Don’t you know that?’

Of course I do!’ Samidare starts with a slow exchange of punches with Shigure, pouting as her sister catches them all. They were warming up again. ‘But I’m not fast enough to – !’

Then get faster!’ Shigure throws a kick – Samidare raises an arm to parry it, but staggers from the force. You wince as the successive blow comes. ‘You’re the first line up and the second line down – !’ Shigure raises a knee, using the leftover momentum for an unexpected attack. ‘If you’re not able to at least put a niggle in your enemies, you might as well not be on the battlefield at all!’

Samidare doesn’t dodge it in time, but her movement meant that the blow didn’t connect as cleanly as it would have if she didn’t try to do it at all.

‘Play to your advantage!’ Open palm. Caught. ‘Your teammates are too busy trying to stay alive to give you a second glance! You might as well consider yourself alone out there!’ Samidare catches Shigure’s other fist, gritting her teeth as the both of them vied for the advantage. ‘If you get things done before they can, then – !’

Shigure sweeps her sister with her leg, sending her tumbling onto the mat.

There’s nothing to worry about, is there?!’ Shigure smirks with a huff. You believe that’s the first time you saw the expression on her face. ‘If you’re not fast enough, get faster! You’re not going to be facing the same enemy twice if you kill them at the first meeting – so don’t you try and knock unless you know that it’s a key!’

Hah!’ Samidare rushes back in.

‘When you’re out of ammo, your fists is all that you have left. Know what to do with them!’

Shigure smacks Samidare’s kick, sending her hopping. She huffs again as Samidare falls onto the ropes.

‘B – Break…’ Samidare raises a hand to cease the exercise. ‘Shigure-neechan, this is crazy. I think I can feel my core shaking at all this, yanno?’

‘I’m going easy on you.’ Shigure chastises. ‘When you’re out of ammo, how do you think the Abyssals are gonna go? They’re going to know that you don’t have anything to back you up and niggle you for all you’re worth. That’s what I’m teaching you, you know? If you keep retreating after you miss all your volleys you’re not going to be anywhere near elite.’

‘I’m not a genius like you or Yuudachi-nee.’ Samidare drops, spread-eagled, onto the mat, exhausted. ‘You can go a little easy on me…’

‘That’s why I said you weren’t ready. You should go back to patrol – !’

She sits upright straight away.

‘I – I’m not saying I don’t wanna improve, but – !’

‘I’m telling you, there’s no way.’

‘Samidare, you’re the one who wanted to make a run for the elites.’ You take an accusatory tone, lifting one of the weights hanging on the rack… and strapping it to your wrist. They’re heavy. ‘You’re going to tell me that you’re going to give up before you even started?’

‘Commander?’ Samidare cocks her head, confused.

‘Shigure cares for you enough to give you a chance to make yourself better. She’s harsh, but I think that being on the field for as long as you both have you know just what’s beyond that coastline, right?’ Samidare looks away from the both of you, mumbling. Shigure’s expression is a little more pink than usual, but she doesn’t show much change either. ‘I know that it’s a little hard to stomach for now, but if you’re really serious on trying to break through where Shigure seems to have set the bar for you, you can’t let up. You can get angry, but if you’re telling her to dial it back when it’s set, you might as well not try at all.’

‘I just wanna get a little stronger is all!’

‘Gains aren’t always what we give back. Sometimes you need to give more than to get back what you think you’re going to get.’ You flex your bicep – the weights would do for now. ‘Samidare, I may not be out on the field as much as you are – I don’t think any of us humans ever will – but if you set a bar, don’t lower it just so it can meet you. The whole point of it is to step out of what you’re comfortable with so you can get used to what you’re not.’ You offer. ‘I don’t think Shigure’s going out of her way to demean or humiliate you, but she needs you to keep up when you can, where you can.

Samidare looks downward with a defeated expression.

‘The Abyssal side isn’t going to bother lowering their bar, so why should you?’ You question her. The Trainer walks over to you, lifting one of the dumbbells littered around effortlessly. ‘Push and push until you’re on your knees and then get back up again – that’s what all of us do. Telling yourself that you’re good enough for the day when you know you can do better just get that self-pat on the back isn’t worth it.’

Samidare bites her bottom lip. You try to remember something that would suit the situation best… and after a few moments, you do.

‘Anything in this world that’s worth having… doesn’t come easy.’

The Trainer gives you an acknowledging – and respectful – nod, gesturing for you to come over.

‘Okay!’ You hear Samidare call out energetically. ‘One more!’

The sound of a thud and a crunch reaches your ears… and you turn to see an odd spectacle.

Samidare is bottom-up, in a corner, letting out a whine. Shigure, in a battle-ready stance.

‘Okay, Shigure,’ you grimace, ‘maybe tone down with the hits a little.

It was time for you to get down to work.

You fall immediately after the second set. You were in better condition than you had been before, but it would seem that your pain tolerance – or the fact that you couldn’t exactly get a good sense of your bearings had you working in a manner that was a lot more taxing on you than you would have expected. You’re not so much exhausted as you were in some kind of degree of pain – mostly around your shoulders and your underarm area – but regardless, either way it swung, they both would have ended up with you in a heap on the floor anyway.

‘Kid, you be speakin’ and speechin’, that nothin’ but hot air.’ The Trainer hands you over a water bottle. You raise a hand – you didn’t feel like drinking right now – but find that The Trainer’s insistence in the form of a hard smack to your ear to take it prevents you from turning him away. ‘How do you think that girl’s thinking on your ass, gettin’ a whoopin’ right up there?’

Your eyes turn up to Samidare, who was trying her best to defend against Shigure’s precision strikes. After three or five poor attempts at parrying, her sister would stop the pattern and bring her arms back into position, over and over again, like a ritual. Samidare looked like she was intent on following through with your words, though, and was keeping quiet for the most part. You even feel a little sorry for her as Shigure starts barking in her face again – not so much out of frustration as it is to keep her attention.

‘Man, you guys think you got it bad here, you should go and see Zuluva sometime.’ The Trainer cackles. ‘Bullets over your head and a gun around every corner, ironically, minimal crime.’

‘The Vice-Admiral told me that you were a former Ambassador.’ You reveal; he only smirks at you, nodding. ‘How was Zuluvan life like? I know people practically treat it just like one big continent – no real borders because they’re changing every six months or so.’

‘It’s the purity of the battlefield, nothing more sacred and true. You go to Zuluva you’ll die after one corner or it’ll make a man out of you.’ He chuckles, cricking his neck. ‘Humanity gettin’ wiped out like The Heavens are cleanin’ our clock; back in Zuluva you couldn’t do more with your ass than a six year-old with a rock.’

‘That’s a jibe, I take it?’ You sigh.

‘Son, you think me a fool if I don’t keep liftin’ my standards.’ He looks at you, incredulous. ‘You just gonna tell yourself you’re okay where your ass landed?’

‘I was just asking about how it was over there.’ You try to clarify your intent. ‘I didn’t mean to bring anything back up.’

‘It’s not that my friend, it’s not that at all.’ He wags a finger. ‘Just relatin’ to Zuluva, where however you stand, it’s the fittest who stand tall.’

He claps his hands… and you get up again, wincing.

You grunt as you bring yourself up, gritting your teeth. The Trainer’s intense stare is fixed right on you, his full weight on your kneecaps as you bring yourself up to them, only to be greeted by his scrunched visage, voicing his displeasure. You know he’s not doing it to be cruel – you’re keeping time well enough, but right now enough wasn’t going to meet the standard. You’d lost count how many sit-ups you’d done – and it must have been well over fifty because you’d developed a slight twing under your shoulder blade at number forty-seven, and that had been about three minutes ago. The man shakes his head every time you bring your upper body up – you can feel the cramp growing in your belly, unused to the intensity – the pace so alien it feels like it’s going to pull you apart.

‘One!’ He keeps shaking his head. You scowl as you hook onto your ear by accident as you go for another lift.‘One!’ He takes a more condescending tone, glaring down at you. ‘One!’ He slaps the side of your leg, eliciting a glare from your own eyes. ‘It’s not a workout if you think you’re having fun.

You let out a growl as you pick up the pace. He still glares at you. Something at the back of your head pushes you to up the intensity on yourself. Your body is already plenty sore, but you don’t feel like stopping just yet – not when there was a man smack-talking you like you were some sort of quitter. You were, of course, when you needed to be, but not when you really wanted to stick it to someone. The Trainer yells out again, more encouraging than he was the last time. You can feel the soreness in your thighs now, from all the lifting your muscles did of your upper body.

‘Come on, buddy, this ain’t a quittin’ stall!’ He practically yells in your face, spit flying everywhere. ‘You either pack it in and go home or you give it your all!’

With an almighty grunt, you go for one… two…

‘Time!’

You drop onto your back, letting out a groan. You want to just curl up in a ball and weep, but you’re just too far past the threshold of pain to care to do so. Your back feels numb and it’s as though your stomach and had been taken out of you, been used as a basketball and dribbled around before being put back in. The Trainer stands over you, smirking – with a hint of satisfaction behind it.

‘You gotta keep consistent, my man, because you better believe,’ he crouches, placing a water bottle next to your head, ‘it ain’t over for no one – not even me – until you feel like you’re gonna heave.

‘I’ll – !’

Light footsteps approach you.

‘Good evening, Commander.’

It was Goya.

‘Good evening ma’am.’ You grunt, rubbing your neck as you sit up. ‘To what pleasure do I owe this meeting?’

She doesn’t reply; instead, she turns to The Trainer.

‘I would like to procure your premises for the next ten to twenty minutes, if possible, good sir? I have Admiralty business to conduct with The Commander here about his… absence.’ She drops into a bow – in respect of mockery for The Trainer you can’t tell, but he spares you a glance and tentatively nods. He either knew that Goya wasn’t someone you wanted to mess with – she then turns to Samidare and Shigure, who step out of the ring with guarded gazes. ‘If you two would leave as well? This is strictly between The Commander and I.’ She grins widely. ‘Unless you’d like to see red on pulp tomorrow morning? Either way is fine with me.

Goya and Shigure trade glares – for a moment you expect Shigure to throw a kick or a torpedo her way, but… she ultimately relents, taking Samidare’s hand as she walks them both out of the facility. Samidare throws you a worried look. You reassure her with a nod – there won’t be any trouble. The Trainer gives you one last look… and goes out with them.

‘Don’t mess up my place, I’ll only tell you once.’ He warns with a rumble. ‘Or I make you both look like a second round dunce.’

The door shuts. The both of you are alone.

‘You have a pair on you, Commander.’ She takes a dangerously sweet tone, bending over, her eyes taking on a maddening quality. ‘You’ve made that apparent enough in the last few weeks. The most I expected from you were a few charges on sexual misconduct – don’t think I didn’t see you eyeing our foreign guest up and down a few times – after those Carriers just couldn’t keep it up anymore, but I am very surprised by the fact that you would violate every single rule that we have about non-attribution and cross the border on a suicide mission.

She says it like a little girl, skipping from one foot to the other. It only makes her more unnerving.

‘Would you care to enlighten me on the thought process that you took in making this decision?’ She giggles, approaching you. ‘I mean, there is this mutual respect between us, isn’t there, sir? I do my job so you can do yours well – and I don’t think you’re appreciating my role… or my office as much as you SHOULD!

She’s fast. She’s strong. She must have needed both to close the distance between you so quickly, slamming you to the ground and mounting you over your lower torso. Her grin widens, her eyes pulsing with hate and an insane light about them. Once again, you’re reminded of the difference between KanMusu… and humans.

‘TELL ME WHAT YOU THOUGHT?’ Her voice takes a rough quality, baring her teeth as she hatefully bores her eyes into you. ‘THAT I’D TAKE THIS STANDING DOWN?’

‘You’re telling me that you really don’t know why I’d risk the security of the whole nation and The Admiralty crossing the border into foreign territory?’ You don’t take a mocking tone, but you do make it firm as you meet her gaze. Her eyes only narrow – and her grin only widens. You can tell that she definitely isn’t in the mood for it. ‘You’re a smart young lady – you can probably piece it together yourself.’

But you still had to show that you weren’t going to crumble so easily.

‘A smart aleck – just the kind of thing you don’t have to be right now.’ She says in a manic sing-song, pressing hard on your chest so you would stay down. ‘Do you understand how humiliated I was when the report came in? Taigei herself called me into The Keeper’s Office; do you know of the shame I went through saying the words I didn’t know?

There’s a sharp intake of breath and a strangled noise – she’s holding back, a little; that little line that separates you form being a stain on the wall and still breathing by the end of the day. She pushes down harder – your diaphragm, your bones – buckle underneath the force and you know by now that she’s not in the mood for games. A little pain was good in this case – you had her open to you in exchange.

‘Enlighten me.’ You grunt, giving her a defiant glare. ‘I’m trying to help you here as much as you’re trying to put me in a corner, so can we at least just meet each other halfway?’

‘You’re in no position to bargain.’

‘Neither are you, if this is what we’ve come to.’ You gather what breath you can… and she lifts her hand up, trying to re-take control. ‘So what do you say we play one for one and we start talking like civilized folk?’ You offer, pushing up on your elbows to meet her sneer. ‘I don’t know if you’re bound by the Fairies as much as the others are, but… I don’t think I want to take the chance. Likewise, you don’t want to be made out like a moron again, so… truce?

‘Fine.’ She says so icily, but not before using your chest as a push-off – a painful one. It felt like you were being knocked by the business end of a log. ‘We’ll play a little give and take.’

‘If you’re going to ask any questions, I need to ask you a few things before we start.’

‘That’s cheating.’ Her grin comes back – and you can see the fury behind it this time.

‘Maybe,’ you answer tentatively, licking your lips, ‘but but you can get in as much trouble as I can, so I say we play this safe.’

She huffs.

'You made me look like a fool in front of every investigative arm in The Admiralty. Forgive me if I don't feel like playing it nice or safe.'

‘Then if this is personal,’ you sit on the bench, sending her your own look of disdain, ‘I don’t have an official obligation to divulge my motives, intent or even if I was present to your accusations.’

Goya’s smile – impossibly – widens. Her teeth are so white.

‘You’re playing the bureaucracy card here, Commander?’ She giggles unnaturally – she probably hadn’t expected you to go a full one-eighty with your agreement, but that wasn’t right. ‘That isn’t right, you know? Kids who don’t know where they stand will be punished.

She’d just left herself so open that you couldn’t help but go for the kill.

‘If there’s a punishment coming my way, then I’ll take it straight from the hands of The Admiralty with a smile.’ You say it seriously, crossing your arms and rolling your shoulders. ‘Your job, Miss Goya, is to continue your observation of me for my prior disciplinary misconduct.’ You take a sharp breath, hoping she was still imbalanced enough to give herself away. ‘I don’t think that whatever this case is to you – that it’s under my obligation to divulge unless The Admiralty themselves told me to tell you on a piece of paper with four stamps on it.’

‘Oh, you know how to do it, don’t you?’ She twirls before bending over, baring her teeth. ‘Watch it, Commander. I happen to know just how angry they are with you – and unless you get talking – !’

‘I have no obligation from the side of The Court that authorizes me to divulge this information. As far as I know, my job is to shut up the best I can about whatever happened – or whatever didn’t.’ You take a formal tone, getting up from your seat and looking down at her. ‘I was thinking about meeting you halfway, ma’am, but regardless of what you think of me, I am still under the jurisdiction of The Court in this matter.’ You raise two fingers. ‘So as far as you’re concerned, I was AWOL for two weeks and you can report that tidbit: Yokosuka First Division Commander left base without authorization.

Goya stops smiling, crossing her arms and mirroring your expansion.

‘I know you took part in an illegal operation across the border.’ She sneers at you. ‘There’s no point in you keeping what everyone knows from me – for your own good, Commander, I would like a full briefing on the nature and motive of the operation on an off-record basis. Just like you did when you decided to make the jaunt.

‘And my reply is, Miss Goya, that I have no obligation to divulge or debrief you on the events that transpired in this alleged operation until I am given authority by The Court to do so.’ You remember the initial report. ‘Until that changes, you can assume all you want.’

Sending you one last glare over her shoulder, she moves towards the exit.

Watch it, Commander. I’ve been playing this game longer than you have.

END INTERLUDE

The Submarine’s warning hangs over your head like a dark cloud. Maybe it wasn’t such a good idea to provoke her like that, were working around technicalities. The rest of the workout session consisted of a few stretches and light cool-down exercises prior to your leaving, but it didn’t help in shaking that there was something you missed in Goya’s demeanor. She had been almost a little too personal with you, letting her guard down so easily just to take a petty shot at your person… which was a little uncharacteristic, given how detached she was where you were concerned before. Somehow, you feel like you’d just disturbed a hornet’s nest, despite your adherence to existing protocols. To your right, a few men – Army personnel – share some cigarettes as the sun begins to set on the horizon.

Shigure and Samidare didn’t return after that episode with Goya. You don’t blame them, either – you didn’t like being around the Submarine anymore than you did being in a locked room with a tiger, even with the recent win, in so many words. The Army personnel give you a nod of acknowledgment as you pass by them, your seaside barracks right on the corner. You pass by the now-fixed but still-empty buildings. It looked like the message that things were – at least on the surface – in a better state than they had been a month ago still hadn’t quite reached ears… although it could have easily been that no one wanted to stay in a place that was torn apart by Abyssal forces like paper.

The transports taking people out of the city hadn’t quite petered out yet, either, if what The Trainer had casually mentioned was accurate.

You step around the corner, catching sight of… The Admiral and a tall, dark-haired KanMusu in traditional clothes just down the street, heading into your compound. You run up to the both of them – no doubt he was here to see you.

He catches sight of you right as you stumble through the entrance, halfway across the compound, heading towards the front door.

‘Commander.’ He acknowledges you, giving a nod. ‘Had a good jog?’

‘Gym session, actually.’ You grimace.

‘It’s nice to see you out and about, Commander, really.’ He starts neutrally, before taking out a folder from under his arm. ‘But I’m afraid I’m going to need you back on assignment. On the books this time. We’re launching the next series of operations, and we can’t afford to rest on our laurels with this one. Again, we got 4 ops for 4 Commanders.’

‘No ceremony this time?’

‘Fusou’s got all the paperwork right he – !’

The KanMusu known as Fusou drops a heavy briefcase onto the ground with a dull thud. The Admiral sighs in resignation.

‘Sorry.’

The Admiral gestures for you to follow him – to the as-yet unfixed gazebo.

OPERATION SHATTERED SHAFT – Lv. 4

There is news of a heavy Command Force mobilizing their offensive to disrupt standing KanMusu operations and intercept future endeavors in the North-Eastern region of the designated defense lines. Breach the hot zone, eliminate any and all hostiles in the area and secure the sea to ensure that future operations are able to be executed with minimal threat to success. Enemies are expected to be of the heavier classes – thus, if available, the presence of a Battleship Unit or Carrier Unit to assist in the completion of this mission is highly advised. The continued offenses may disrupt Ominato’s standing operations and peter into patrol lines and base integrity.

The priority for this mission is securing the stretch of sea and the elimination of the A-Rank Command Unit of an UNKNOWN Class. Mop up the rest if necessary.
>>
OPERATION GLASS HAMMER – Lv. 3

The Admiralty is working to re-establish a small island outpost, Designation: Tetra Compound and install a working network for future offensive operations. This includes the installation of several new pieces of MagiTek for off-base maintenance. A Cruiser Group is patrolling the area – and it’s only a matter of time before Tetra Compound is compromised. Fend off the attacking force – if they break past the compound – but do not pursue. There is no enemy above B-Rank predicted to be present.

The priority for this mission is for Phase 1 to Phase 4 to be completed in regards to the installation. Elimination is not required.

‘How bad are things there?’ You pick up the photos and the map – it’s not much. Open seas and an indication of weather; nothing that’d help you, really.

The Admiral points to one of the arrows on the map with the strange characters next to it.

‘Bad.’ He answers grimly, taking a few documents out of Fusou’s hands and giving them to you. ‘We’re still reeling – the Summoning Modules are still malfunctioning, so a defensive force is going to be patchwork on a wound. What The Admiralty hopes is that an offensive push is going to be at least some stitches.’ You frown as you flip through the folder and see a few Ho-Class Light Cruisers. ‘Intel’s scouted a Command Force within strike proximity. They’re getting a little bit too close for comfort. Your assignment here, Commander – is to plow the road: make a gap big enough to give Ominato some breathing room.’

‘That’s suicide, isn’t it?’ You practically balk, reading through the report. They were a lot closer than anyone would have been comfortable with. ‘What do we have to push back a whole Command Force?’

‘We have you and another Commander on the scene.’ The Admiral offers, handing you another folder. ‘This is a joint-base mission – a little bit over-the-top considering the size of the op, but we’re stretched enough to be doing it. He’s an okay guy, has his own team prepped. The other Commander’s undergoing a transfer, but the threat’s close enough that we can’t just stand by and wait for another breach.’ He points to a red area on the map. ‘You’re going to be taking point – hopefully you’ll have the element of surprise on them to catch the Force unawares… but I won’t go beyond a prayer to bet on that. Expect a firefight from the get-go.’

You bite your lip.

‘How big a force are we talking?’

‘Enough to make The Grand Lieutenant run a joint-op request approval.’ He grimaces. ‘Not that there’s going to be much of a choice, either way. Ominato can’t afford disruption or be on the defensive right now – this is our litmus test to see just how far we’ve come since The Assault. Personally, I would’ve pushed it back, but that’s not how the world works, son. Still, we do what we can with cards we’re dealt.’

‘Call or fold?’ You give a defeated smile.

‘Depends if you wanna ride it out or play it safe.’ He gives the piece of paper a quick tap. ‘Either way, it’s your choice.’

‘Guess we’re about to find out.’

>‘Anything on this Commander? His strike team?’
>‘It says here that I’m going to pretty much be the battering ram. Can I expect support?’
>‘You said that playing defense would only be patchwork – couldn’t there be a delay arranged? A different approach?’
>‘Who do you think I should bring?’
