Welcome to Mischief Managed: A Marauders Era Quest. This quest takes place in the Harry Potter universe in the year 1971 and follows our PC’s years through Hogwarts, Tom Riddle’s rise to power, and the First Wizarding War. Book canon will be followed for most things. Every other year will be skipped, for times sake, but only while you’re in Hogwarts. Rolls are best of 3 using a d100. Before we begin, there's a couple things you need to choose.

AUGUST 27, 1971
You read the letter in your hand for the thousandth, studying the words that are beautifully written across the page. You’ve know you were going to receive this letter for as long as you can remember. It warmly reads that you shall be attending Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, come September 1st. You can't help but smile to yourself, excited that you're finally going to the legendary school magic.

Before you can get lost in daydreams of magic and adventure, the person you’ve been waiting for joins you. Your father is sharply dressed, a suit underneath his green robe. He looked at you with an almost tiresome gaze and says,

“I assume you’re ready to leave, Cyril?”
“Yes father.” you say shortly

And with that he holds out his arm, drawing his wand out with his other as he does so. You quickly grab on and the world goes black as your body feels as if you're being squeezed down a tiny tube. Just as quick as the terrible sensation started, it ends and you find yourself standing in Diagon Alley, people all milling about, gathering what they need for the coming school term.

Calming your stomach so you don't meet your breakfast again, you look to your father.
“I must attend to some Ministry matters. I’ll be gone for several hours, so you’ll have to do your school shopping alone.” he states plainly. He places a small sack of what you galleons into you inner robe pocket and disappears into the hustle and bustle of the alley.

Noting your fathers rather unusual behavior for later, you look around, trying to decide where you should go first. You’ve already been fitted for your school robes, so all you need is your books, your wand, and pet if you decide you would like one.

‘Whats a wizard without a wand?’ you muse to yourself. You, actually. So you decide its best to finally change that and start making your way to the famous Ollivanders. Making your way through the crowd rather easily, you find yourself in Ollivanders shop. In the front is a desk and behind it stands shelves upon shelves of different wands. The entire store smells of dust and has an almost electric feel to the air.

The old man doesn't seem to be at the front desk. There's a couple wands laying about on the desk and bell not far from the boxes.

Deciding that it only makes sense to use the bell for its intended purpose, you ring it a couple times and wait. Not shortly after you hear sounds of movement in back. Peering down one of the aisles, you see Ollivander on the top a ladder towards the farther end of the store.

He gives you a quick look and takes out his wand, gently tapping the ladder with it. Suddenly the ladder shoots towards you and arrives in quick fashion with a sudden stop. The old man, apparently much more spry than you thought, slides down the ladder and lands behind the desk.

“Ah Mr. Selwyn, I’ve been expecting you.” he says in a soft voice, his dull silver eyes studying me, only creeping you out a little bit.

“You were? How did you know I would come here?” you ask curiously
“The school semester starts in just a few days, of course!” he says

Before you can respond he twirls his wand around you and suddenly a tape measure is measuring your entire body. Once it's done taking your measurements, he twirls his wand again it disappears. He turns around and taps his finger amongst the boxes of wands, searching intently. He quickly finds one and brings you the box, opening it to reveal a medium length light brown wand.

He gestures for you to pick it up and you do. “Go ahead, try it out.” he encourages

You gently pick up the wand from its box, unsure of what to do. Soon though, that feeling is gone as a warmth begins to emit from the wand. You give it a hearty swish and large blue and green sparks shoot from your wand, fizzing out before they reach the ceiling. You stare in awe at your wand, surprised that you did magic; even if it wasn't really a real spell.

“Ah, how very...curious” Ollivander says, breaking the silence. “Your particular wand is made from a rather finicky wood; Acacia. Its rarely works for anyone but its owner, but it also withholds its best effects for all but the most gifted of our kind.” he says, ending mysteriously

You stand still, not sure how to take the new information. Could you one day unlock those effects? But before you can reply back, Ollivander says “That’ll be seven Galleons.” Shaken out of your thoughts, you dig into your money sack and give him the gold. You take the wand and safely stow it in your robes pocket.

You look up and see that the man is already riding the ladder back towards where he was before you came to the shop. He gives you a wave and a kind smile and disappears behind a shelf. ‘Must be a busy day’ you think to yourself as you walk out of the shop and back to the alley. Looks you've still got plenty of time to get your books, possibly buy a pet, and maybe explore a bit.

Remembering your letter stated that you could also bring a cat, owl, or toad if you wished, you begin making your way to Magical Menagerie, a well known pet shop in the northern part of the alley. You expertly work your way through the school shopping crowd once more and arrive in the shop, surprisingly being the only one in.
You take a moment to look around and take in the various creatures that are scattered throughout the shop. There's cages hanging from the ceiling filled with different kinds of owls, tanks filled with everything from reptiles to rodents. There's even a pen with a giant tortoise studded with rubies on its shell sunbathing under a small magical sun. The shopkeeper finally notices you and he calls out to you from the shelf he's stocking,

“Hey there son, what can i do for you today?” he says in rugged voice voice

“I was wondering if you had suggestion on what pet I should get” you reply to the man.
He scratches his beard and seems to study you for a second before saying, “Welp, you look you’ll be starting Hogwarts this year, so that means you've got three choices. I’ve always been fond of cats, particularly Kneazles. They can be deadly useful. Never been o’ toads, what with that croakin’ and such. And I imagine you can see the benefits of an havin’ an owl.”

You take a moment to think about what the man told you. A part of you wonders though…
“What about if I wanted to have pet that wasn't on the list?” you ask innocently
The bearded shopkeeper lets out a laugh and says “Remind me of myself when I was your age. Well, as long it isn't dangerous and you hide it well, there ain't much harm with breakin’ the rules” he says with a grin.

“A snake!” you suddenly say, finally coming to your decision. “A cobra, if you have one?”
The shopkeepers demeanor changes ever so slightly as he says “Eh? A cobra?” Yea, I’ve got me last one in the back” and disappears to the back of the store. Several minutes later he walks out with a tan cobra, curled up tightly. “She sleepin’, she is” says the shopkeep

The snake must have realized it was being discussed as it unravels itself and raises. You slightly tense up, afraid it may strike. But the cobra does no such thing, it merely sticks its tongue out and regards you as an odd curiosity. “Nowe take out your wand and lightly tap her on the head” the shopkeep instructs. You follow his words and right after taping the snake, she glows ever so slightly. “Now you’re bonded with her. She’ll be able to understand ya, might even listen to ya if she feels like it.” the man explains.

You don't say anything, just nod your head in understandment. Slowly, you reach out your arm to the snake, allowing he to flick her tongue on your arm. Once content she coils around your arm, holding on land taking in your warmth. The shopkeeper can't help but give you an odd look as you pay him and make your way outside.

You spent more time than you thought in that store, looks like you've got enough to grab your books and maybe check out another shop if you're okay with being a little late to meeting up with your father.

This isn't your first time in the store, so you're confident you'll be able to navigate it without getting too lost. You walk the aisles, letting you fingers run over the spines of the books as you walk past. Stop a several times, taking a particular book that strikes your fancy from the shelf, skimming through it and walking with as you read.

Advanced Spells For Sneaky Spellcasters, a rather heavy leather bound book with a silver ring embedded in the front of it, shows and explains many different spells that are perfect for when the moment calls for subtlety and sneakiness. Once you're done with the book, you merely let it go and it floats back to original spot.

Another book, The Sacred Twenty-Eight, shows a detailed family tree of the last 28 entirely pure-blooded families in magical Britain. You flip a couple pages and notice yourself looking back at you, though you look much younger. The page you turned to is your own family tree, detailing back to the time of the founders of Hogwarts. You’re so engrossed in your book, you don't notice the the bespectacled boy turning the corner.

Both of you drop the books you were carrying fall to the ground and you bother instantly go to pick them up and end up colliding heads. The boys glasses fall off and you lose your balance and fall on your ass. With a dull pain coming both your head and ass you, you rub the spot on your head and look up at the boy.

You're surprised to see that he's...smiling? His black hair is an untidy mess and as he looks at you with his hazel eyes saying, “Looks like since we both had our heads up or asses, you fell on yours!” He says while picking his glasses from the floor and putting them back on, chuckling at his own joke.

gnoring James’ helping hand, you pick yourself off the ground, grabbing both of your books as you do so. You hand him his book, Quidditch Through The Ages, back to him,
“If only we could have in a less painful way” you joke, “Nice to meet you James, I’m Cyril, Cyril Selwyn”, sticking out your hand. James doesn't seem to mind that you didn't take his and shakes your hand. His face turns to one of interest as he says, “Selwyn huh? If I’m recalling years of tortuous homeschooling correctly, our ancestors haven’t always see eye to eye.”

You look at him rather plainly, unsure what he's trying to get at, and nod your head. He’s right, your family isn't known for being the lightest Noble House around, and the Potters are one of the much more progressive houses. It's the very reason their family tree is not shown in the book you carry, even though the Potters are one of the most Ancient and Noble houses.
“Though I don't see why what some old dead coots did to one another should affect us.” he says with a friendly smile. Before you can react, James quickly asks in an excited voice, “You must be going to Hogwarts in a couple days too! What house do you hope you're in!?”

Slytherin isn't so bad, it will be interesting to see the house at this point in the timeline at least. Just so long as we don't go pants on head retarded evul, hell being friendly to James now might lead to some good chances to be an inside man. Instead of having to fight our way to attention on the Dark side we can diversify our contacts and become an information broker and fixer

Yeah he was kind of an ass back during that time, and not only to Snape.

You stop yourself before you can answer too quickly and think. All of the Houses, no matter what people say, are worthy of being apart of. But theres one House in particular you’ve always held above the rest, hoping that you were sorted into it; Slytherin. Home of the cunning and resourceful, it is not only your father’s House, but also your mother's. Most of your ancestors were sorted into Slytherin and ended up achieving the goal all Slytherins seek: Power. It only seems fitting that you would join them in that success.

You look at James, your answer decided, when an idea hits you. You grin to yourself as you say to him, ”C'mon mate, look at the snake and take a guess.”, motioning to your arm. He gives you a puzzled face as he looks as your arm. Almost as if she heard the word “snake”, the cobra you bought only a short while ago slowly pops her head out from your robe.

James lets out a yelp of surprise and jumps back pulling his arms up as if he's about to box your cobra. You can't help but laugh at his ridiculous reaction. “And here I thought Potters were known for their bravery.” you joke. James stands still for a second, then lets out a laugh and lowers his hands. “Of course we are, I was merely reacting out of pure instinct” he quips back.
He pauses for a second while he eyed the cobra then, “Slytherin, huh…” he wonders aloud. “I would’ve never guessed.” then another pause. “But ya know, you don't seem that bad. Anyone who can pull a good joke can't be that bad. And I could always use an inside man.” he finally finishes with a grin. You roll your eyes at him saying, “Bluntness like that can only mean you hope to get into Gryffindor” He doesn’t say anything, only giving you a rouge smile,a rebellious glint in his eyes. Before you can say anymore, you hear James name being called out and his eyes widen.

You both quickly say your goodbyes and mention possibly meeting one another at the station. AS you watch him walk away, you realize you’ve yet to get your books. You should probably hurry, or you’ll be late to meeting your father.

With James now gone, you set back to your task. You letting go of the book youve been holding, you begin to search for your school textbooks. After a several moments of walking back and forth, you’ve finally found all the books you need. Start to walk towards the front desk, but stop yourself a few feet.

You remember the spellbook from earlier, Advanced Spells For Sneaky Spellcasters. You may not be able to do any magic yet, especially such advanced spells, but it doesn't hurt to study ahead. You put your books on the best, run back to where you found the book and grab it. You run back and buy the books, your new spellbook included. You pay the woman, who barely looks up from her papers, and waves you goodbye lazily.

You stuff your purchases into you money sack, which thankfully has a featherweight and an ever expanding charm placed on it. You walk out the door and start at a brisk pace to the place where you arrived with your father. On your way, there you are hit with a mad inspiration and decide to name your cobra, Falcor. You tell her your decision and she seems to accept her fate.

Nearly to where you arrived, you see man leaning against the wall, slightly slouched. As you get closer, you realize it's your father. You find it odd your father is slouching, for hes always disgusted by it, calling it “uncivilized posture”. He notices you walk up and raises his head, his face pale and gaunt. ‘His work meeting must have been intense” you think. He merely nods at you and says “Hello Cyril, you're on time. Good.” and looks forward and holds his arm out like he did this morning.

You frown.

You hesitate to grab his arm. Normally, your father is completely composed. But something's off now. You can't help yourself as you ask, “Father, are you alright? You look very tired.”, concern creeping in your voice. “How was work? Not too hard I hope?”

Surprisingly, your father smiles at you. “I had a very exerting meeting. But, it was also a very successful one.” he says rather shortly. You pick up that he wants to leave, but you're still bothered by the way your father is acting. He notices your concern and puts his hand on your shoulder.

“Now Cyril, don’t worry. My department has been recently planning a new project. It's quite draining and requires me to wear myself out like this. Nothing some of your mom's cooking can't fix.” he reassures, allowing another rare smile to grace his face. You’re not totally convinced he's alright, but obviously work has been draining. ‘Must because of the start of term is only 4 days away’ you reason with yourself. As content as you’ll get, you take your father’s arm and apparate home.

We still have Slughorn as our House Head, and he is the Potions professor. A few brownie points are always good to have. Plus, if we are good at them now, we can get extra leeway later in the year and focus on other things while at Hogwarts.

SEPTEMBER 1, 1971

You awake early, too excited to sleep anymore. Today's the day you’ve been waiting for. In just a short time, you’ll be on the Hogwarts Express, on your way to the famous school of magic. You’ve spent the last several days getting packed and going over your school books. You’re surprised to find out that you're much more interested DADA than you thought. It's not just about spells, like you thought, but the study of dark beings and anything useful to be used against them.

Youve been able to go over the first couple chapters in your book, even going as far as to learn some of the listed spells wand movements and their incantations. You hope that this extra studying will make the class a little easier in the beginning.

You’ve also spent pretty much every waking moment with your new pet cobra, Falcor, whom you've just been calling Fal for short. She seems to enjoy being with you and takes to hiding in your robe pockets or wrapped on your arm. Once you showed your father after getting home from your trip, looked almost excited. “I knew you were destined for Slytherin.” he said, giving you a pat on the back.

You waste no time getting ready, and after quickly going through your trunk, you determine you’re ready to go. Taking your trunk with you, you meet with your mother in the parlor, where she sits patiently for you. Upon noticing you, she smiles and walks over to you and embraces you in a hug. “My darling little boy, finally off on his way to be a man.” she says in a singsong voice. You mumble words about how your mother can't treat you like a kid forever, now that you're a real wizard.

She laughs and pulls away, fixing your hair while saying, “Ah yes, but you will always be my Little Cy.” Before you can react to the use of your old pet name, she quickly continues, “Now, if you don't want to miss your sorting, we should be on our way.” You shake your head in agreement, but before you take her arm, you finally notice something important; your father is missing.

“Wheres father? He said he took the morning off to come see me off.” you ask, the disappointment plain in your voice. He bailed yesterday and today! Your mother gives you a sad smile and explains “I know he did dear, but the Ministry called him in, some sort of emergency in the department. You know he can't ignore that. He told me he wanted you to know he was sorry.” You simply nod your head. You understand, as annoyed as it makes you, that Unspeakables are on call for their duty 24/7.
>>
>>911788
Not wanting to waste any more time, you tell your mom you're ready to leave. She grabs your arm and after the horrible sensation of magical travel you arrive at the station. In front of you stand the scarlet Hogwarts Express. You can't help but look at the old steam engine in awe as students and their families mill about you, loading their trunks into the train.

You take another moment or two to take in the train, knowing you get to see it for another six years. Turning to your mother, you give her tight hug. You hear her say how she loves you and you pull away from your embrace. “I’ll make you proud, I promise.” you tell her. She gives you a sad smile and says “I’ll always be proud of you.” She gives you a quick kiss on your forehead and you both say your goodbyes, your cheeks a little red from embarrassment and happiness.

You grab your suitcase and make your way to the train along with the other students. You back and give you mother a final wave of goodbye and she returns it, smiling at you. You quickly make your way into the train. Since you’re still a little early, there's several compartments in the immediate vicinity have little, if any people. You browse through your selection, pondering about where you’d like to sit.

You narrow your choices down quickly to two compartments; the one with the Slytherin girl and the one occupied by the first year duo. You decide it's probably best to try to make friends in your own year and then build up from there. Before you walk into the compartment, you look in at the occupants. They're too engrossed in conversation to notice you. They seem well acquainted with one another. They must have know each other before getting on the train.
You knock on the glass door several times, softly. The noise of conversation stops as you open the door. The boy turns his black eyes on to you and gives you a rather pointed glare, as if he's mad at you for interrupting his conversation. What caught your attention though was the girl's eyes; they were a bright, glimmering green that reminded you of emeralds. You also notice the look she's giving you is just as annoyed as her compatriots. You apologize for the intrusion and the begrudgingly allow you. You easly life you suit case up, eternally grateful that magic exists. You sit down, across from the other two and look at them awkwardly. They look back at you just as awkwardly.

Wanting to clear the air of silence, you introduce yourself. “Cyril Selwyn, aspiring Slytherin” you state to them. As soon as you say your name and Slytherin is uttered, the boy seems to tense ever so slightly and his glare of annoyance lessens to one slight boredom. “Severus Snape.” the boy states plainly, “You’re a Selwyn? Aspiring Slytherin fits perfectly then. I too hope to join Slytherins ranks.” he tells you.
The redhead shifts and your attention turns to her. Your name and house mention don't seem to have had the same effect on her as they did with Severus. She still looks annoyed with you as she tells you her name. “Im Lily. Lily Evans.” Snape nudges her, as if her to tell he to be a bit more friendly to you and she turns and glares at him.

Hey Naust just wanted to say I'm lovin' this right now, keep it up.

How dare you tempt the dice gods? You've been warned.
>>
You know, as much as Slytherin seems like the option, we've been acting mad HuffleBUFF for a while now, and I like it.
>>
>>912650

It's the best way to scheme, make sure it is under a mask for at least the first part so as to not seem threatening
>>
>>912654
But we're being the king of friendship, we were concerned for our dad, we loved at our mom, and we have that trademark Hufflepuff arrogance. We are being loyal, kind, sociable, and friendly.
>>
>>912650
Gaining friends is just another way to gain power. Being in Slytherin doesn't change that, it just means we have to be careful about who we're befriending is all.
>>
>>912650
There are many paths to power, Avon.
We don't have to be a dick to be strong
>>
>>912675
You also don't have to want for power to make friends. We've just been nice for the sake of it mostly.
>>

“So, what're you guys looking forward to? I'm looking forward to Defense Against the Dark Arts, I’ve already some of the chapters from our book.” you say, trying to ignore Lilys curtness and get the conversation. The talk of magic seems to make them both perk up. They must be just as excited as you to start school.

“Potions,” Severus says first, “is what I look forward to. My mother is a Potions Master, so I know how to brew already.”, his chest puffing up a little. Lily though seems conflicted, unsure on how to answer. She bites her lip and says “I'm not sure. I don't know much about magic, but everything I’ve read so far is just….amazing. I guess everything seems interesting” The awe in her voice is similar if not exactly the same way you feel towards magic.

Before silence can fall between you all again, you say “I shopped for school supplies the other day, and i thought itd only make sense for a future to have one of these.” They both give you a confused look as you take the left sleeve of your robe and reveal Fal, snugly coiled around your arm. She flicks out her tongue in greeting.

Lily gasped, covering her ,mouth and backing up a little, while Severus rises his eyebrows in surprise. “I-is it dangerous?” Lily finally asks, lowering her hands from her mouth a little. “Only if I want her to be.” you say with a devilish grin. “Her name is Falcor, but I call her Fal for short.” Lily rolls her eyes at you and Severus laughs. “Interesting name, Selwyn. I've heard cobra poison can be used in some potions and poisons.” he informs.
Before you can say anything else, there's a lurch and the train suddenly begins to move. It looks like you're on finally of on you way to Hogwarts.

I think there is just Lucius' (and then Snape's) gang of slytherins who go around bullying people and care a bit about pure blood stuff (like Narcissa, yay!). I don't think there are any junior death eaters at Hogwarts during the first war. They all join immediately after leaving like Barty Jr who should be at hogwarts now!

Still, if we do go into snek house we will have Lucius, Nircissa, Barty and a few others as upperclassmen. Lucius is even a prefect.

As the train picks up speed, you look out the window, looking at the station one last time. You smile to yourself as you see your mother, far off in the crowd waving to you. A couple more seconds and you pass the barrier and you're surrounded by trees. You quickly turn back to your new acquaintances and see they're already talking to one another, though they seem to be a little bit more relaxed. Lily darts her your eyes to arm every now again, probably still nervous about the live cobra you call a pet.

You think about pulling out a book, maybe getting a little bit more ahead before you’re at school, but decide against it. It’d be rude not to get to know Lily and Severus, so you turn to them, interrupting their conversation once more. They don't seem to mind this time, and look at you after you say their names. “So, Lily, you said that you don't know much about magic?” you ask. She seems slightly upset by it, more with the situation than your question.

“No, not much. Sev's told me some stuff, but there's just so much to know.” she says, not seeming overwhelmed at all, but entirely excited. “Well,” you announce to the both of them “I’d be a terrible wizard if I didn’t help you out about learning the greatest thing known to man.”(“And woman” Lily interjects)
You spend the majority of the ride answering the flood of questions coming from Lily, Severus trying to help you as best he can. It's obvious to you now that Lily must be a muggle-born and that while he does have a large knowledge of comings and goings of the wizarding world, Severus lacks the knowledge most pure-blooded children get pounded into them at an early age. He must be a half-blood, though you’d have never guessed. He seems to pride himself on his wizarding knowledge.
>>
>>915691
When the trolley lady comes by, cart filled with sweets, you buy some for you and you new friends. The three of you talk about magic and learning, and you all can't seem to keep your excitement contained. Mid conversation, Lily stops talking and looks out the window. You look out too and see what made her talking cease: a castle. Not just any castle, Hogwarts. You feel the mixture of excitement and nervousness well up inside your stomach.

You all quickly change into your robes, two of you taking turns blocking the compartment door while the third changes. You feel the train begins to slow down and you're soon at a dead stop. You help the others take down their trunks, seeing how they aren't lucky enough to have a featherweight charm applied to them. As you make your way off the train, you notice a man standing toward the end of the train, close to the lake.
‘Man” may be too light of a term, for the man is HUGE. “First years over here, leave ya luggage by the train” the great man billows out. All three of you look at each other wide-eyed and leave you trunks behind, making your way down to the man. Once all of the other first years get to the man, he waves you to follow him. After a short bit of walking, you make it to the boats. You, Sev, and Lily all join up together in a boat. Once all the boats have been filled, the giant waves his hand and all the boats lurch forward.

Within no time at all, you're whisked across the lake and lead through several hallways. You eventually find yourself in front a huge door, larger than even the giant man. A older woman dressed in a sleek red velvet robe and black hair in a bun walks in front of you and the other children. “You may leave Hagrid, thank you.”she says, dismissing the man. He gives her a quick bow and walks off.
She turns to all of you saying, “I am Professor McGonagall, deputy headmistress and transfiguration teacher at Hogwarts. In a few short moments you shall be sorted in your Houses. There are four Houses; Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw, and Hufflepuff. Your House will be like your family for your next seven years at Hogwarts.” She explains to everyone. And with that, she takes out her wand and motions to the doors. The great wooden doors open with ease to reveal the Great Hall.
>>
>>915695
And Great it is. The ceiling rises high and has been enchanted to look like the nights sky. It's absolutely beautiful. Hundreds of enchanted candles float high above, giving light to the room. As you all file in, you can't help but be nervous, you stomach in knots. In the front of all the students sits a hat resting upon a stool. It suddenly begins belting out a tune, and you barely listen to it. You're too preoccupied about wondering what house you’ll be in to really pay it any attention.
Soon, your new classmates are being sorted. Your stomach clenches every time a name and their new corresponding house is called out by the odd hat.
“Bones, Amelia” HUFFLEPUFF!
“Evans, Lily” GRYFFINDOR!
Severus seems to deflate a bit at that, frowning intently
You space out for a while, waiting for you own name to be called when you hear,

“Potter, James”,your friend walks up and sits on the stool. The hat barely touches his head when suddenly the hat shouts GRYFFINDOR
With a wild grin, James saunters over to his new house table. You can't but laugh. You space out again, waiting for what feels like an eternity when suddenly

“Selwyn, Cyril” Professor McGonagall calls out. You begin to work your feet forward, unsure of what to expects as you finally sit upon the stool. You feel the hat placed and almost as if you've been Imperiused, a voice whispers to you in your head. Ah, another Selwyn. Hmm, usually I’d throw you into Slytherin, but there's something a different about you. Yes, very different indeed. You think with your head and have a thirst for knowledge. Ravenclaw might do you good.

But not just a thirst for knowledge, but for Power. I think your family house could help you with that as well. Slytherin could be your way to that goal.

There's something else I see. A kindness I’ve never seen in your line. Must be from your mother. A certain loyalness to all those who you call friend. There have been many a great wizard that has come from Hufflepuff, and you could be one of them.

There was never a moment of doubt in your mind about which House you wanted to be in. ‘Slytherin! I want to be in Slytherin!’ you yell out in your mind, hoping that the hat can hear you. There's a light chuckle in your head and you hear the hat say ’Of course, it only makes sense that someone with you ambition would want to be in SLYTHERIN’ yelling out the last word. There's thunderous applause from the Slytherin table as you take the hat off and walk to your new family.

An older, longhaired blond boy motions to an open seat farther down the table. As you pass him he introduces himself as Lucius Malfoy, Sixth Year Slytherin Prefect. He tells you if you need any help, come to him, for ‘our kind must stick together’. You thank him and make your way down the table. You take your seat by another first year who was sorted before you. He’s got short wavy brown hair and seems to be studying his new House, as if this is his only chance. Before you can say anything, you hear Severus’ name get called. You draw your attention to your new friend, anxious to see where he’ll be sorted.

It takes only a minute for the hat to come to decision, during which you notice Severus taking quick glances at Lily, and there's once again more applause from Slytherin table. Severus makes his way to you, but not after giving a pitiful look to Lily. As he takes a seat by you, you congratulate him on getting into the best House at Hogwarts. He gives you a small smile and thanks you.

Several other students are sorted and finally the sorting ceremony is done. McGonagall takes the hat and stool away as Headmaster Dumbledore rises from his seat. He puts his wand to his throat, enhancing his voice, and says “Welcome to our all of our new students. And welcome back to all of our old ones! Now enough talk, let's dig in!” and with a wave of his wand, the tables become filled with food.

Some of your fellow housemates give a gasp, but the rest just begin to dig in.

You begin to fill you plate with all sorts and notice the boy by you doing the same. He must be starved because he's stuffing his mouth with chicken wings. Thinking there's no better time then now, you turn to the boy and introduce yourself. He raises his eyebrow at your outstretched hand and you realize maybe its best to wait for him to finish. He finishes chewing the chicken in his mouth and wipes his hands. He firmly shakes yours and replies,

“Rowan Halpert, Slytherin first year and connoisseur of meat” and you let out a laugh. You begin talking about your new house and Rowan is slightly surprised to find himself in Slytherin. “Don't get me wrong” he explains, “I’ve always wanted to be In Slytherin, it's just that I come from a family of Ravenclaws.” You tell Rowan how the hat considered putting you in Ravenclaw and you come from a family of Slytherins, but you rejected its offer, asking to be put into Slytherin instead.

“Huh, odd.” Rowan says. When you ask why he tells you “Before it said anything, I demanded to be put in Slytherin. It said there was never a choice where I’d go.” ‘I guess everyone is different’ you think to yourself as Rowan begins attacking another drumstick. You turn to Sev who hasn't seemed to eaten much. “Better eat up Severus, you're a growing snake.” you say jokingly. He tells you your joke is terrible, but you see him smile before he begins to eat. You join Sev and Rowan in enjoying the wonderful feast.

After you’ve all had your fill, you introduce Rowan to Severus. Severus seems slightly apprehensive of the boy, but Rowan doesn't seem to notice. Before you can say much more, the feast is over and Lucius calls for Slytherin table to follow him. After a dizzying maze of corridors, you make it down to the dungeons. Lucius seems to randomly stop and turn to a damp stretch of wall. “Salvator Mundi” he mutters, and suddenly the wall begins to slide aside, revealing a passage. Slowly filing into the common room, you're taken aback by all of it.

The common room is a castle-like room with greenish lamps and regal looking chairs. The room seems to extend partway out under the Black Lake, giving the light in the room a green glowing hue. Large windows allow you to see out into the dark lake. Every now and then you see the occasional fish. The common room has lots of low backed black and dark green button-tufted, leather sofas; skulls; and dark wood cupboards. It is decorated with paintings and tapestries featuring the adventures of famous Slytherins. It has quite a grand atmosphere, but also a very chilly one.
>>
>>919493
In the middle of the room near the fire stand a short, fat man. His slightly bald head glimmers in the firelight and it looks like his suit is about to burst. With a jovial voice the man says “Welcome to Slytherin House. I am Professor Slughorn, your head of House. For the next seven years you will call this dungeon home. The people around you should be considered your family. Us Slytherins must stick together, for there is much prejudice against our kind. I expect that if you have any problems, you will come to me for help, for that's what I’m here for!”

With that, he tells you all the rules you're expected to follow while at Hogwarts. Its nothing you new to you. When he's finished, he bids you a good night and the prefects show you to your room. You share the room with four other boys, two of which you already know; Severus and Rowan. The other two boys are already in bed. They must have left the speech halfway through. You change into you sleeping clothes and tuck yourself into bed.

It’d been such a wild day.

Not wanting to fall asleep when you've got so much energy left, but not wanting to break the rules on the very first night, take out your wand and mutter Lumos. I agree.

My opinion is selecting the most useful stuff in every field, and picking a combat form that most people aren't familiar with.

Normally combat is won through outsmarting and very quick combat.

So we need to get really good reflexes with casting spells, and our stock spell needs to be different to anyone else's.

You spend a good portion of the night pouring over your book, trying to memorize a antidote for common poisons. While most of potions is doing, the study is helpful. You think that once you get to brewing it, your studying will have helped you. You’re also able to read up the theory of potion brewing and why certain things are important to brewing a certain potion. Its confusing, but you get the bare basics, which should be good enough for the time being

You don’t remember falling asleep, but when you awake your head is in you potions book, thankfully no drool on it. You quickly close it and check the time. You’ve got enough time to get ready, find out your schedule for the day and go to class. Seems like you’ll have to skip breakfast because of your late night reading.

You decide that it's probably best to worry about yourself and get ready. Besides, you’ll see Severus in class. Run into the nearly empty common room and grab a schedule, reading it as you walk out. Looks like studying potions was a good idea, because your first class of the day is exactly that. It seems like you’ll also be sharing the class with Gryffindors. That oughta be eventful, to say the least.

You take a couple turns and you're in front of the potions class. The door is already open, so you make your way inside. It doesn't seem like Slughorn is here yet, probably enjoying breakfast as much as he can. You see Lily has already made her way to class, already setting out her ingredients. You also see Rowan at a desk, standing his stool on two legs as he sits waiting for class to begin. Theres also a light brown haired boy in the corner, his nose in a book as he waits for class.

You decide it's good to fraternize with everyone at first. It's worth having the connections, regardless of something as petty as Houses, so you walk over to the brown haired boy, who still seems to be caught up in his textbook. You give Rowan a wave and he returns your wave with a frown, saying “Looks like owe Severus a Knut. I was sure you’d sleep through the day.” You sneer at him and walk over to the brown haired boy.

“Mind if I sit with you?” You ask him. The boy looks up slowly and you're surprised by his face. He looks like he didn't sleep last night. Or the night before. He looks like he uneasy and seem slightly nervous. “S-sure.” he says, turning back to his book. You can't help but pick over as you take a seat. You're surprised to see something familiar.

“I just read that chapter last night.” you tell the boy as you begin to take you potion supplies out. “You did? Wait, why are you reading that far ahead?” the boy asks curiously, now having stopped his reading. “Pursuit of knowledge isn't just a Ravenclaw trait. Besides, it's helpful to know how to brew an antidote for poison. You never know what can happen.” you say with a sly grin. The boy gives you the smallest of smiles back. You introduce yourself and he introduces himself as Remus Lupin. The two of you chat before class starts and Remus seems to relax a little bit, though he still looks exhausted and still a bit tense.

Everyone eventually files into class, even James has decided he should go to his first day of class. He gives both you and Remus a wave as he sits in front of with another Gryffindor boy who had long curly black hair and the same reckless smile James wore. Snape was the last to arrive, and he took his seat by Lily, who had seemed to have saved him the one by her. Slughorn came from his office and began the lesson. After he finished, he told everyone to pair up with the person they were sitting with and brew a simple Cure for Boils potion.

You don't waste any time, quickly separating the ingredients you need while Remus begins getting the cauldron to the correct temperature. You and Remus work in tandem, taking your time and constantly making sure the potion is as it should be. Towards the end of the class, your potion is looking almost exactly how the book describes it should; a nice deep red.

Slughorn goes around the class, grading everyone's cauldron then letting them take their potion if they wish, and if not, vanishing its contents. When he comes to you he tells you excitedly you have the...2nd most best potion in the class. The number one spot goes to Severus and Lily of course. Severus gives you a smug sneer when you look over and you just roll your eye at him, Remus scoffing at the two of you. You take some of you potion before you leave, waving Remus goodbye.

The rest of the day goes by quite uneventfully as you go to History of Magic and quickly learn you'll be sleeping in this class as the ghost Professor Binns drones on. In the evening you go to Astronomy, which you actually like to your surprise. By the time you arrive back to the common room it's getting a little late.

Deciding you’ve always got time to study, you crack open your copy of The Standard Book of Spells, Grade 1. You skim the pages and stop at random, landing on the theory and practical uses of the Mending Charm. After a while, you realize the spell is much more simple than you thought. You take out your, sure of yourself. Boldly ripping out several page from your book and point your wand at the pages, muttering “Reparo”. You watch in amazement and relief as the pages magically mend themselves back into their original place.

Satisfied with yourself for the time being, you close your book and let out a yawn. You’ve learned a lot in the past couple days, but you haven't gotten a good night's sleep since you got here. You wake up behind the next morning and panic. You calm down when you remember Slytherin FIrst Years get Fridays off. Relaxing back on your bed, Fal slithers up to join you. It seems like everyone else has already gone to breakfast.

There's one place you’ve been wanting to check out since you got here, but haven't had time for; the library. You make your way from the dungeons to the library without an problems, probably because you didn't have to take the stairs. You're taken aback by how large Hogwarts library is. Books sailing high air, reminding you of owls.

You survey the main room, and see a stern look old woman at the desk, her eyes closely watching all the students in her sight. There's a couple other students already here, either reading a booking or writing notes. Your recognize Remus from the distance, but he hasn't seemed to notice you yet. You notice a Ravenclaw girl from your Astronomy class who’s intently reading a large tome. The older Slytherin girl from the train is also there, taking notes from a book.

The Ravenclaw girl seems too busy with her book to bother and the Slytherin girls seems a bit intimidating, so you go see how Remus is. He seems to be trying to concentrate on the books and papers in front of him, his quill and ink by his side. Layouts of several different areas of the school are scattered in front of him. How odd, you were planning on doing the same later. Before you can say anything to him, he says in a soft voice,

“Hello Cyril. Finally decided to slither down to the library?”. You're surprised that he knew it was you and that he can even joke when you see his face. It looks as if he hasn't slept in days and is going to be sick. He gives you a weak smile. “Are you alright Remus? You look horrible.” you tell him bluntly. Remus lets out a small laugh and explains, “I’ve been up late recently. Plus I think Black gave me a bad pumpkin pasty as prank, the prat.”
Black? He must mean Sirius Black, the Blacks heir apparent. You're surprised he was sorted into Gryffindor. You should really have payed attention during the sorting. Though other than looking like he's about to faint at any given moment, Remus seems happy.

“What’re you reading up on?” you ask, pointing to his books and layouts. HE looks like glad to be off the topic of his health as he goes on to explain, “W-well, I’ve found out over these past two days that it's nearly impossible to get to class without becoming lost once or twice. So, I’ve decided to make a map.” He moves couple papers aside to show you the beginning of a map. What little drawn is very detailed looking.

“Impressive, I was thinking about doing the same thing.” you tell him. He opens his mouth to say something when suddenly he clenches his teeth and covers his mouth. He quickly gets up and excuses himself, slamming his shoulder into you accidentally as he runs away. Winded, you rub where Remus ran into and wonder what hell just happened. Not wanting the title of a troublemaker, you wait for the librarian to reach you. “Why are you and your friend horsing around in my library?” she snaps at you. You keep a calm, cool demeanor and simply say, “I'm sorry to disturb you ma’am, but my friend Remus seems to be a little sick.” The woman’s face seems to instantly soften. “Oh, I see. The poor dear. Well, I shall watch over his belongings if you’d like to make sure he okay.”You’re surprised. You’ve heard stories from other students about the librarian. Thats shes tough as nails and only cares for her books, but it would see that she does care for the students. She waves you off as she stands over Remus belongings.

You decide it's best to go to the most logical place one would go when they're sick; the loo. You go to the closest bathroom, and sure enough you find Remus, retching up his morning meal in one of the stalls. “How’re you feeling?” you ask him, not sure what to do. “Oh just lovely, never better.” he replies back sarcastically. There's a flush and Remus walks out shakily. He waves off your helping hand. “I'm fine now, its all out, we’re good.” he says reassuringly, even though he looks like he's going to throw up again.

After some time for Remus to catch his breath and wash his mouth out, you walk back to the library and thank the librarian, who introduces herself as Madam Pince. After she leaves, both you and Remus take a sit. He seem a little bit better now. The pumpkin Pasty must have run its course.

You watch as Remus tries to get back into his mapping, but he seems to still be a bit under the weather still. “Here, give me the quill and parchment.” you demand him. Giving you the supplies with a curious look, you begin to slowly draw the map. You take your time, not wanting to ruin Remus’ work.
Hours go by and Remus eventually joins you in map drawing. You’re able to accurately draw Hogwarts grounds. Remus seems to enjoy your company more than anything else, and he even seems to get a bit better as you both chat and draw. “We didn't get very far, but thanks for your help.” Remus says, putting away his materials. “I’ve got to get ready for Astronomy though, so I’ll see you around.” You both say your goodbyes and with that Remus leaves you alone at your table.

Its starting to get late now, but the night's still young. It seems that you're the only person in the library other than Madam Pince

You decide that before you leave for dinner, you should get some new reading materials. You wander the vast book shelves when you stumble upon the Ancient Runes section. You stop, taking a book from the shelf. Opening you begin to read the page. Or at least try to; it seems this page and the next several are nothing but unintelligible runes. You flip to the front of the book, thankfully seeing english this time.

From what the books telling you, learning runes is complicated and takes time. The class isn't even taught until third year though, so if you started studying now, maybe you’d have an edge. You check out a copy of Spellman’s Syllabary and leave the library. Waving Madam Pince a goodbye and make your way to the Great Hall.

When you get there, you look for Sev and Rowan, but it seems that they've already ate and left. James and his friends aren't even there. Shrugging, you sit by yourself and look over your new book as you eat, careful not to drop anything onto your reading material. After eating your full. You decide to head back to the common room, and begin to make your way.
“Watch where you’re going, stupid snake.” you hear a distantly familiar voice say from around the next corner. “Ah, I should’ve expected such manners from a...Gryffindor.” you hear another, very familiar voice bit back. Its Definitely Severus, but you cant think who the other person might. As you turn the corner, you quickly find out.
Standing only slightly taller than Severus is a boy with black wavy hair, angrily standing in front of a cool looking Severus. You’ve seen this boy before, at a party hosted by his own parents; Sirius Black. They both look at one another with daggers in the eye, both of their hand starting to go for their wands.

Nigga no, that'll put us at odds with both of them. We want to get in on some marauder action and we want Sev to be bro tier.

We're already getting somewhere helping Reemus with his map, now all we have to do is get in good with Sirius and James. Play our cards right and we could even be Order of the Phoenix in this bitch.
>>
>>939513
I agree, there is no point in being that rude. With those rolls, we'll probably be able to settle the matter in a peaceful manner.

Also I don't see the point in referencing Houses that much, but that might just be a pet peeve of mine.

>>936808
Great exposition to conflict, loving this
>>
I kinda like the idea we come across as a diplomancer, if other Slytherin's are confused we explain why.

1) Never appear to be the agressor so your already looking in the right
2) Contacts mean information and that leads to power
3) We're god damn Slytherins and we're better than them, hold ourselves to a higher standard than the rest of the Mongrels.

I kinda like to imagine we're going to end up having a rival little gang going. Maybe we can make our own artifact, a Slytherin equivalent to the Marauders map?....
>>
>>940182
Or we could NOT be an obvious first choice Death Eater recruit that'd be nice.

Honestly we could totally go double agent but I feel that'd steal Snape's thunder. Also I wanna see the kind of hilarious shenanigans we can pull with the Marauders. Plus, if we survive we could totally be like, "Shit Snape/Sirius/Reemus, he looks like James", and we'd be grieving godfathers. That sounds fuckin great to me.
>>
>>940182
>I kinda like to imagine we're going to end up having a rival little gang going. Maybe we can make our own artifact, a Slytherin equivalent to the Marauders map?....
I'm interested. Also, we could always try to make our own copy to ensure that we don't need to depend on being able to access his map when we want it.
>>
>>940182

I'm not for the rival gang, the Marauders are useful in their own right as long as we keep them on good terms with everyone plus they're all powerful wizards is their own right, one's I would rather be friends than enemies with
>>
>>940205
Well firstly I doubt they'll be interested in a first year, secondly i'm not sure what our characters views are but he may end up down that path naturally, third we can just you know...not get marked because thats a dumb thing to do to ID yourself, go for the Hail Hydra method or something that don't ID you at a glance

>>940238
When I said rival gang I kinda meant become the leader of our own little group, not exactly antagonists to them but doing our own stuff.
>>
>>940265
Like this guy said >>940238, not rivals, just own own faction inside Slytherin. After all, we're not going to hang out with Gryffindors more than our own house. That's just ridiculous, and I don't want it at all. I have no problem being a friendly guy to any house, but to seek out only those 4 that are in a different house as best buddies? Ugh. It's why I'm interested in the group idea, as in we would interact and get to know more of the people from our own house.
>>
>>940280

Shit, I got the links to the opposite posts, oops.
>>
>>940182
I like how the diplomancer idea could lead to everyone respecting us, if not looking up to us. If all the houses at least respect us and our grades aren't to bad we are a good candidate for head boy and slug club if we convince Horace that we can maintain our relevance outside of school.
>>
Maybe later on depending how things go and if we feel it's necessary, and thats a big if. We could ask Lucius for some spells/neat tricks?

Anyone any ideas for our own little "Project" like the Marauders and their Map?
>>
>>940353
Heh, he will probably teach us by casting nasty hexes on us, sounds fun!
>>
>>940353
Instituting a toll to pass through the secret passages.
>>
>>940365

Not a bad plan this one, a small contraband business would be a good way to keep our ears out for any information and make some money on the side which we could always sell the information of the secret passages.

We should set up a ward on them with a changing passcode, that way any time someone wants to use them they have to pay us for it, of course any friends we have are not included in the toll
>>
How about this.

We get the higher years to buy food and snack from town, we sell it back at 150%. We give the older students a cut and keep ourselves paid. We use the funds we generate to buy more shit. We code lock all the passages we find so that people have a toll to get through, adds to the pot and so on. Every so often we buy our fellow Slytherins something nice.

How about instead of a little piece of paper for a marauders map, how about instead we put it somewhere central for Slytherin's to use (the ones who we give a code to get in that is).

OR we create a spell which creates a scroll network. Like write on one scroll and it appears on others. Basically create web messenger, that shit is basic as fuck and best of all subtle.
>>
>>940427

I like the messenger idea, especially if we set up a master scroll to use as a sort of server through which all messages are routed, keeping that information to ourselves of course.

I wouldn't support the common use Map idea though, to useful a tool and keeping it to ourselves gives us an upper hand, an ace in the hole so to speak
>>
>>940427
Also to build off the whole scroll idea, if we WERE to make say, our OWN map, maybe we could make our OWN secret passages from Hogwarts to Hogsmead and else where, passages that only WE know and could use in case if emergency.

Like I said I REALLY want like a season two of this shit if it does go that far, where we partake in the Second Wizarding War, cause I'm a huge faggot and like to ask too much of naust
>>
The problem is that we don't have the magical chops to do anything that complex or stop anyone from just shutting our spells down.
>>
>>940461

Making extra secret passages out is something a bit beyond our skill level would be, even in 7th year, hell I am not even sure that the Headmaster can unless they included direct control over the castle in their abilities which I know I wouldn'tv'e if I were a Founder
>>
>>940481
Oh, and we don't know any secret passages. ;^)

You keep your pace as you walk directly towards to the two boys. “Now, now, let's calm down children.” you say, and instantly their gaze breaks from one another and on to you. You give a grin to them both, noticing they've also seemed to have forgotten about going for their wands. Finally arriving to them, you give Severus a smack on the back and he looks at you annoyed and slightly confused, not understanding exactly what you're trying to accomplish.

You point at Sirius, his eyes on you, the angry look still plastered on his face. “You’re Sirius Black. We met a couple years ago. But I don't think I ever introduced myself. Cyril Selwyn.” You stick out your hand. Sirius drops his angered look and adopts one of utter confusion. It makes sense; Gryffindors and Slytherins being civil to one another is practically unheard of.Sirius looks between you and Severus, unsure on trusting you. For all he knows, you could be waiting to stab him in the back. But he surprisingly takes it, maybe out of respect for your very Gryffindor like approach. Only a Gryffindor would walk into a confrontation so bluntly.

Before either of you can say anything to one another, you’re interrupted, “How lovely it is to see my two favorite pure-bloods get along.” You turn to see James giving you a stupid grin. You hear Severus mutters something about Gryffindors and obnoxiousness. Sirius reacts before you can, yelling to James, “James! I’ve been waiting forever. I was about to go hex someone.” Severus begins to say something, but before he can say something that’ll only inflame the only just calmed situation you shoot him a warning glare. He seems to understand, if only by the skin of his teeth and bites his tongue. The look one he gives you tells you that he's probably counting this as a favor.
>>
>>941298
You turn to James and say “How nice it is to see my second favorite Gryffindor.” James feigns hurt, saying in a wounded voice “Not first? I am deeply hurt and offended.” He walks over and puts his arm on Sirius saying, “Sorry to interrupt your fun Black, but we’ve got buisness to attend to. Sirius perks up and seems to forget about you and Severus entirely, shaking James “That's what I’ve been waiting for you for! I was nearly killed by snakes!” James laughs and pushes Sirius towards where he came from.

“Sorry to leave so soon, but our duty as Gryffindors calls!” james tells you, following Sirius. You give him a quizzical look as he strolls off. God, had james not came in to grab Black, you dont know what would have happened. You turn to Severus and he looks at you annoyed. “So you’re the Gryffindors pet? How cute.” he sneers out. You roll your eyes and explain to him, “If we are on good terms with the Gryffindors, they won't give us trouble. And we only profit from that. Besides, having them on our side could be helpful. Severus doesn't seem to object to that, seeing the ideas merit.

“Well, we should make our way back to the dungeons before curfew.” you say, and Severus nods in agreement. You make your way back to the common room without any disturbances, thankfully. The common room has a couple older Slytherins sitting about, either studying or chatting amongst themselves. You and Severus both have the same idea in mind and sit down, taking your books out. As you get ready for the day you realize that in the short while you’ve been here you've interacted with more people outside of your House than anyone else in your house. That changes today. You decide you’ll get to know some of you fellow Slytherins. Since it’s Saturday, everyone has the day off. You decide the common room is your best place and go there.

Surprisingly there's not as many people as you thought there were would be. Most of the kids who are in the common room seem to be the lower years such as yours. Not wanting to waste time, you walk up to a group of fellow first years. You meet several people, all of which you’ve met in passing once or twice before. You meet the Carrow twins, a boy named Amycus and a girl named Alecto. They both have an air of superiority around them. You also met Corban Yaxley, a scrawny yet very inquisitive boy.

Rowan joins you all and you spend they day talking of studies and your lives. It's a nice way to spend your first Saturday. You go to bed late, having spent the night talking with Rowan. You’ve slept the day away so there's no need to rush now. You take your time and get dressed. As you’re leaving the common room, your housemates starting to come back from dinner. You pass by them and make your way through the dungeons. You look for Severus and Rowan on your way, but can't seem to find them. They must still be in the Great Hall eating.

Its their lost you think to yourself as you wait for a staircase to stop moving so you can climb it. The castle ceases to amaze you and you know it'll take a couple years to see every bit of it. You stop at the top of the staircases, near the entrance to a class that goes into an attic, when you faintly hear someone grunt out in pain below. You look down, trying to spot the person the sound came from. You finally notice, near the portrait of a fat lady, Professor McGonagall kneeling over a student.

You can't hear what she's saying to the student, but it looks like they may have tripped and she's making sure they're alright. She seems too busy with the student to notice you. The student finally raises up from the ground, albeit quite shakily. McGonagall helps them and you catch a brief glimpse of the students. You know who it is; none other than Remus Lupin. He looks the worst you’ve seen him yet. They make their way down the stairs carefully and are out off your view.

It feels like you waited forever for them to pass. You're still confused on how they popped up out of nowhere.
