"Amon, my beloved student...I believe it's time that I teach you."

The old, white-haired sage stands tall upon the crest of the grassy hill overlooking the wet grounds and surrounding coast of the Water Temple. His young student, already a respectable monk at only fifteen years old, looks up with curious respect to his aged master, Myatsuu. The late afternoon breeze carries away the silence between the two as it did on that same day so long ago in the Temple courtyard. The young man will remember this moment clearer than all the others though; the day is March 1, his birthday. The younger monk turns to his older friend from his cross-legged mediatation amid the hill's long grass, determined yet unabashedly confused at his teacher's odd comment.

"Teach me? This trip wasn't for just meditation?"

The ancient sage shakes his head solemnly. "No, Amon. I believe few are truly able to handle the depth of the secret I shall teach you today. However, it is something entirely necessary to achieve Enlightenment...The Gift of the Sages"

The student can only stare. This is a technique only referenced tangentially in the texts of the archive, never fully explained in detail. It is a mystery...or so he thought.

"The Gift of the Sages...a pure chakra of a nature beyond the physical elements. It empowers the user enormously and allows them to achieve a self-control of chakra unattainable otherwise. It is the fruit of ten-thousand hours, the culmination of a life's efforts. The pure white chakra fills those of equally pure ideals, those who have eliminated all self-identity, all material attachments, everything that comprises who they are...save a singular, defining purpose. Listen to me, Amon. This 'gift' is as revered as it is dangerous. Few can meet the costs it requires...and those that can are not necessarily the saints that others may be led to believe."
"To destroy one's own identity, to leave all worldly values behind, to singular adopt an ideal and allow it to consume you in both body and soul..."

The sounds of combat and the ever-stringent blows of monk Tai at the Temple below can be heard carrying through the air.

"...not all ideals are noble, my pupil. The Gift of the Sages is powerful, but...it does not require one's purpose to be moral."

Myatsuu faces you again, sun setting in the orange horizon behind him. For a moment, his face bears a degree of concern, but it quickly converts to ease at seeing his student's innocent complexion. "I have faith in you, Amon. I pray you may never need this warning, but...always remember the sanctity of life, the Ninshu, above all else. Should the choice ever face you, to respect life or to hold true to your own ideal, I trust you above any other to know what is right."

The Gift...a blessing to the few, the worthy.
Pure? Good? Moral? All there is, is cruel reality...one you could never accept, Old Fool.

This...this isn't what you remember

The wraith rises from the grasses around the hilltop, pacing slowly over to stand next to the oblivious sage.

"To choose between another life or one's cause...is a fallacy."
"For choosing one would mean abandoning the other...and a life abandoned of one's greatest cause is a death in itself."

The two sages stand side by side in the setting red glow. One glows a soft white while the other leaves a trail of warm, bloody red in the air with every movement.

"Life is something to be conserved at all times, Amon."
"Life itself is an illusion: a cycle of death, waste, and regret."

"Believe in yourself, but never sacrifice another's life in the cause of faith."
"Are all ideals the same? Is it fair to compare the pursuit of paradise to the mundane, animal concerns of the flesh?"

Myatsuu smiles hopefully. "I know you will find your own way. Who knows, someday you may even become the next legendary Gate?"
"Your hour is nigh. Will you continue to be blinded by this crude matter around you?"

"Will you choose their 'lives'...or your own mission, boy?"

>Your name is Amon Shuu, a humble monk of the Water Temple.
>You have no family to speak of, another one of the many casualties of the 2nd Shinobi World War. Your luck pulled through when a wandering monk, Myatsuu, snatched you from the debris of a border skirmish between Konohagakure and Kirigakure with your village having been reduced to rubble in the midst of battle. You were 4 years old. The monk, Myatsuu, brought you back to the Water Temple in the marshy coastlines of the Land of Water.

>Nearly 14 years later, the Temple- your home- had fallen to attackers from the Village Hidden in the Mist. You travel across lands to deliver the merchant, Yoru, safely to his destination.
>Last thread you attained a new teacher, Lady Tsunade, and helped everyone recover from the events of the Heist. You tried to have several drinks to get to know your new master better but things quickly escalated into a test of ability. You blacked out soon after from the alcohol.

>tfw no tsunade route
>>
Sun shines down through the open window and over the jumbled, partially clothed body lying in the bed. You slowly open your eyes, only to quickly snap them shut again at the throbbing pain that accompanies the bright lights. The room seems to spin slightly as your dry mouth gasps it's first reluctant breaths of sweet, sober air. A loud snore breaks what little peace you had, sending another sharp throb through your pulsing skull.

By the Ninshu, this feels like hell.

You crack open an eyelid to see just who is making all of that noise. Lady Tsunade sleeps like a log in the bed under you. Your head, neck, and right arm are strewn over her chest while the ends of your legs hang off the side of the bed...your vision is nearly consumed by the size of her two, massive...

Your eyes shoot open fully in horror as you fully comprehend the scene. Tsunade is...uh, loosely clothed at least while you look like you simply collapsed in a pile on her same matress. How did you even get here, what happened? Nothing...nothing bad, right? You should...

>Pretend like everything is normal and get up as quietly as you can so to not wake her up
>Get Tsunade up for an explanation, training, and an apology if something...happened

First things first...nobody can know of this. You slowly raise your head on a swivel to inspect the room around you. It is comfortably furnished, yet small. The generic, nondescript furniture and aesthetic hints that this place may be a hotel room, probably Tsunade's. You had gotten additional, separate rooms before the Heist, but you never got a chance to see where the others, besides Yoru and Rin, were staying. Seeing nobody, you sigh quietly and close your pained eyes yet again. You doze back to hopefully sweeter dreams on Tsunade's soft chest, leaving the problems of this morning just where they belong for now...out of your hands. Darkness swallows your thoughts as you gradually fall into a blissful slumber again...
*****************

The sounds of splintering staves and of fists cracking against flesh reverberate through the air. You flutter your eyes open, head throbbing in pain, only to see Tai standing over you arms crossed- a stern, disappointed look staining his face.

"Undisciplined as you always are, Amon. This is no time for daydreaming! No number of your scrolls would do ask much good for you as one of these practices- if you took them seriously."

Tai lets out an audible *tsk* as he waves over another opponent, unable to exclusively mentor you in the courtyard full of monks. You turn towards the shaven sparring partner, a monk close to your age with eyes of a deep, churning red.

The young man doesn't smile, instead holding the stave at his side waiting for you to ready yourself.
"YOU HAVE MUCH TO STILL LEARN. MUCH I CAN TEACH YOU."
"IF YOUR WISH IS TO TRULY PROTECT THOSE CLOSEST TO YOU...YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO TURN AWAY THE POWER TO DO SO, WHATEVER THE SOURCE.

"Lady Tsunade? Are you awake in there?"

The memories within your dreams get a bit fuzzy...what was it that you did...?

>Sparred with the other monk for training, as Tai intended
>Convinced the other monk to escape to the gardens with you to "meditate" instead

Your peer raises his staff to you, signaling he's prepared. You consider your options for a moment, but resign any chance of escape as futile. You return the gesture...and the bout begins.

Unlike Tai, you remember this brother to have been rather unpredictable, if a tad weak even by your standard. He starts the fight with a long, low sweep for your legs, which you naturally jump over with ease- seeing the move from a mile away. His red gaze leaves you offset as he opens his mouth to speaks words unknown to your own memories.

"You will be needing more of a challenge than this distasteful display, surely.

Uh oh

You immediately brace your staff vertically to your right, catching an uncharacteristically strong blow. The young man quivers from the rebounding force of his own strike, before following up with a quick flurry of two stikes to your kidneys and throat with the end of his extended staff. You manage to catch and divert the probing strikes as the two of you regain your composed positions, encircling each other.

"Lady Tsunade? I know it's early for you, but I just came by with Rin to give you an update on the status of the injured. Also, we can't seem to find Amon."

Well, if he wants a fight...he'll just have to make it himself. The young monk swipes and strikes with steadily increasing power, escalating to the point where you can feel the force from the blows through the open air. For your own part, however, you simply manage to either dodge or parry the entirety of the attacks. The possessed young man stops his barrage, panting audibly, while you calmly wait. He eyes, trailing vaporous red, close and he collapses suddenly. Bright ruby light seeps out of his body, gathering in a small pool on the ground before slowly forming into a humanoid shape.

"Most impressive, boy. I commend your dedication to pacifism. However...the option for such a luxury will not always be available to you."
"I wonder what you would do...here?"

You blink in confusion, only to find yourself disoriented and in an entirely different place! The screams of battle echo around you in the bloody afternoon light as kunai whistle past your ears only to disintegrate in explosions nearby. Bishamon stalks amid the corpses of the scorched, pockmarked battlefield, casually passing between small openings in the shinobi battling for their lives. A troop of shinobi scream out next to you as they are swallowed alive by the earth underfoot, their voices silenced in an instant. Bishamon solemnly spreads his arms out to the carnage around the two of you.

"This, child, is the reality of life. Pacifism does not exist here in man's many battlefields.
"This is war, a cruel standard by which life abides in its many forms. See how mankind readily sacrifices itself. See how often and how eagerly they trade blood for material resources."
"This is reality. Only you imagine life to be of such unparalleled value. To the rest of the physical world...even it can be converted to some value. In essence, life is no more lofty than land, food, or even status."

"Our faith is one of pain, brother. We trust in a supposedly benevolent force that readily kills and consumes itself. Nothing is truly sacred or righteous here.

You grit your teeth as he calmly looks back down to you. He seems somewhat disgusted, yet otherwise entirely unfazed by the horrific chaos surrounding you.

"I don't think she's awake...I'll just make sure she's alright first. Could you hand me the key, Rin?"

This dream is becoming a nightmare quite quickly, especially considering the only stable presense in this battlefield is the red-eyed wraith approaching you.

This isn't the dream you wanted. Why can't things just go well for once? Isn't this killer hangover enough of a punishment? You close your eyes to the battlefield, shaking your head to force yourself awake. The sounds of war, carnage, and death fade into silence as the darkness of sleep consumes you once more.
It was just a dream, it's only a dream. You need to wake up is all. You just need t-

Then, you feel a painfully hot breath whisper in your ear.
NO MATTER HOW HARD YOU WISH IT AWAY...I WILL NEVER BE "ONLY A DREAM"

You jump awake in the sunlit room in a fevered sweat, clearly noticing the audible voices of Rin and Shizune behind the door to the room. There are the sounds of rattling metal as they fumble with the lock on the door. Tsunade yawns, jostled lightly awake herself from your sudden rise. You look around for an exit, somewhere to hide or somewhere to escape, anything! Your eyes freeze on the miracle you needed...

The open window, streaming in sunlight past the foot of the bed. You jump off the bed.

There is a click from the door.
Tsunade grumbles deeply from the sudden disturbance waking her.

You dive out the open window headfirst, just as you hear the scraping of an opening door across the wooden floor. Made it just in time!

Almost comically, you realize you have no idea what floor the room was on. You look down in midair to the two-story drop.

Your head throbs in agony. Today...just isn't going to be a good day, is it?

As you crash unceremoniously into a trash pile below, you can hear the hefty echoes of Tsunade's yelling and Shizune's feeble apologies from above you. Seems like your newest teacher isn't fond of early mornings...

You climb from the rubbish and to your feet, rubbing your pained head as the morning light burns your eyes with a righteous fury. Alcohol is just as bad as you were warned about. How Tsunade drinks it so regularly is beyond you.
Speaking of which, you'd imagine Tsuande isn't going to be fully up and ready to demolish you for at least a little while.

There is some time to spare before training will begin, you'd assume. You brush the waste off yourself and shield your eyes as you walk into the already bustling street. What to do...?

You smell.

Time for a shower and a bit of studying. You opt to head back to your room as quickly as possible without attracting any attention. Well, attracting any more attention other than the nasty glances and gross expressions of the people who catch a whiff as you pass by in the streets. You enter the familiar motel from before where Tsunade had treated you, passing by the receptionist desk with the also familiar face of the middle-aged man with the twisted towel headband.

"Hey there, stranger! Long time no s-TINK!"

He abruptly yelps the latter out on accident as you rush by him, dabbing his watery eyes with the towel from around his own forehead.

The long, well-deserved shower practically calls to you from across the bedroom. You rush through the doors without a second thought and scramble to get the water running over you. Speaking of, your throat is drier than a desert; you could use some water to drink yourself after this. As the gentle stream of water begins to build in pressure, you consider just how much you gained...and lost from the Heist. You can't look over all your artifacts, so you'll have to ration your time wisely between what you can...

Drying yourself from the well-deserved shower, you opt to inspect the weathered Wen Qu scroll, adorned in flowing golden accents, first. Admittedly, curiousity of whether or not this scroll is written by Amida of the Wen Qu, the Legendary Gate himself, consumes you. Peeling it open, what greets your astonished eyes are complete, pinpointedly accurate diagrams of combat with the weapon. Your eyes read pour the knowledge hungrily, attempting to digest the pictoral representations and their footnotes. Whether the scroll is written by Amida himself is left unstated; indeed, the author of the text doesn't bother with any sort of introduction to the teachings. While not usually something to cause you alarm, as you continue through the work you increasingly stumble over referenced techniques you're not familiar with. In fact, you haven't even heard some of the names of the techniques mentioned here before.

Most interesting of this fact is that there are no notes addressing these unknown moves. You peel the scroll open farther, only revealing a veritable diluge of martial exercises, teachings, and techniques. You read further along, but find it exponentially more unintelligible than the beginning as it addresses techniques unknown to you almost casually.

You feel disheartened...but catch a glowing spark of hope as your eyes meet several familiar words from the start of the text, as well as a diagram labeled with the name of one of the unknown techniques. While it is still somewhat gibberish to you...you assume this could only mean one of two things.

First, there is a supplementary text to go with this one you have.
Or more likely, the scroll includes all information needed...but is written in a linear fashion so that previous information is needed to comprehend latter techniques.

Put simply, you have to read it in order of front to back...occasionally referencing previous material. For now, you settle with deciphering the first several diagrams titled "Spheres of Influences". The beginning section details a new perspective to fighting with your favored weapon, detailing theoretic "Spheres" of combat distances- measured by lengths of the Wen Qu itself- and potential actions to take against an opponent within each.

You spend a tad bit too long pouring over and envisioning the scenarios. You have a lot to practice here...

So, naturally you turn to the Silver-Lined Scroll. Compared to the yellowed length of the Wen Qu scroll, the crisp white paper of this text is subtly welcoming to the touch. You peel it back to the satisfying crackle of fresh paper.
It's another instructionary text, but for Barrier Justu.

>[Learned- Barrier Technique: String Light Formation!]
>[A short ranged barrier is designed to prevent anyone from leaving its confines. Once within a certain range of the person, the user can activate the barrier underfoot, rendering anyone within the seals incapable of escaping. The seal itself is triple-layered, with the user within its center comprising the first layer and the subsequent layers extending outwards from the first. An individual caught within one layer will be trapped within its sealed boundaries.
>The Technique can theoretically include more layers...but the user cannot leave the small center (first) layer themselves without breaking the seal
>The seal is not unbreakable and its strength depends on that of the user.

Studying the techniques in the scroll, you find them to be rather interesting and -surprisingly for once- easy for you to learn. It seems there is much to be gained for these kinds of techniques, as they can essentially allow you to better control the battlefield.

Finally, you turn to the last of the items...
The Goblet.

Remembering the Red Beads from not long ago, you take the cup carefully from the bag- fully bracing for whatever may try to possess or contact you.
...but nothing of the sort happens.

You inspect the sapphire-hued goblet warily, noting its fine construction and detail. Wait, speaking of detail...the scaled design forged into the cup strikes you as familiar, but you are not sure where from. You inspect the cup over and under, before finally left with nothing but the inside.

As you complacently turn it over, you feel...it. You drop the treasure instinctively and jump away. You feel drawn to it, like the object thirsts for your chakra. Speaking of the air... the oddly humid air still feels like it is clinging to your skin. Beads of precipitation form and crawl down your skin briefly, but the feeling passes several moments after releasing the chalice.

There is a...sort of humming vibration in the air, almost...almost as if the blue treasure is calling out into far into the world outside. It echoes far beyond into regions unknown to you, or any man for that matter.

A sudden dread washes over you as you consider looking inside the cup. Much to your surprise, it is not all your own. Though, as quickly as the discomfort breaks out from deep within you, it is stifled and leaves only silence.

You get the feeling that if you look inside of it you may see something else.

No...you may see somewhere else entirely...
...and something may see you. You inch back to the goblet, your curiosity driving you to take just one, quick look.

You pick up the deep blue goblet.

You slowly look over the top of it, the air once again becoming humid.

Reddish-Gold symbols and seals, etched into the precious interior of the Goblet itself, glow with a soft neon light.

There is no bottom in the deep-set goblet, only a void of milky, glazed black.

It blinks.

In shock, your body freezes at the sight. You can't think, breathe, and even cease producing chakra for a moment.

The moment is all it takes. You unintentionally cut off the flow of your chakra to the object, causing the Goblet's seals to
cease glowing. The murky, black pupil staring from the depths disappears entirely with these, once again leaving you looking at the bottom of an ordinary, ornate, blue chalice.

The air starts to become humid once more as your chakra begins to flow again, but you quickly stop it.

That was...you're not sure what that was.

You inspect the goblet for any indication of the purpose of the seals, or better yet any indication of what it was. You can only decipher a bastardized portion of the carved symbols...it translates to something of a timer?

[Learned- Time-Release Technique!]
>[A seal applied in a ritualistic method to a person or object. It does not require a conscious command to be activated, instead self- activating after a certain period of time like a sort of time bomb. It is a useful supplementary seal, to be sure.]
>[The seal here seems to be some sort of derivation to this technique, as it activates some underlying seal on the fulfillment of a specific condition rather than after a period of time. You can manage this extension of the technique too, with additional study of the Goblet.]
