Welcome to DC Adventure Quest. This quest takes place in a DC universe canon similar to the main canon, just how similar will depend on your actions. This thread 0 will establish exactly who we are and what we can do.

As a first time QM I am going with a set of rules that I have seen work in other quests I have participated in. After each post I will give several options on how to proceed, write ins are welcome and encouraged. After a post you will have 10 minutes to vote on options or 20 minutes if I feel the decision is critical enough to warrant it (i will let you know if this is the case). There will be rolls for certain options on 1d100 with crits enabled on 1-3 and 98-100 (this is DC shit gets wild sometimes). Rolls happen after an option wins the vote. Only the first 3 rolls count and rolls made after this cutoff or before an option is selected will be ignored even if crit happens. These are subject to change and new mechanics will be added after we are through with thread 0.

Feel free to ask me questions at any point during the thread, I may or may not answer. Ill also hang around for questions and discussion for a bit after we finish for a night.

With all that said let's get this show on the road

You wake up to the sound of a police detective entering the interview room where you have been kept waiting for nearly 2 hours. Still groggy you get up to shake the hand of the familiar man however the numbness from sleeping on your only good arm makes it awkward. If this were the first time you met the many would introduce himself as Raymond Burch, Senior police detective and family friend, one of the few you have left.

“I should've guessed you were involved in this morning's clusterfuck kiddo” The man says in a gruff voice that was carefully cultivated over 40 years of a pack and half a day.

“Now to be fair, I was trying to prevent said clusterfuck” you reply “although I wasn't prepared for that freak to show up when they did, also stop calling me kiddo I'm a 22 year old man”

“Don't hold your breath, your dad was kiddo to me into his 30s” he chuckled. “Anyway I need your John Hancock on this incident report and testimony before we proceed”

You quickly write Isaac Morrison on the line at the bottom of the packet of papers, hoping this interview will be over soon.

“Now onto the why we’re here, you approached the residence in question at 3:27am, 11 minutes before the 3 story townhouse was replaced with a crater, yesterday morning for what reason exactly” Ray says in official police business voice.

Ray knows about what you can do, he actually was the one looking after you when your abilities started to show 10 years ago. Your dad had fucked off into the Aether for 8 months as he tended to do every now and then while you were growing up. And your mother was never a part of your life beyond the letters and small gifts you used to receive until they stopped abruptly when you were 11.

Ice/water manipulation it is. Gotta say I did not expect that one but it sounds like fun. Writing now.

“Anyway I just wanted to check it out at first to see if the rumors were true” you continue.
“As soon as I set foot within 50 yards of the place I could feel something was off, I could feel it in the water” you say in your best Cate Blanchett voice. “I knew the rumors were true, the stolen blockbuster serum that was on the news was here, and these tweekers were all dosed up”

You remember it like it was yesterday, mostly because it was. It was your first real fight, at least it was right by the lake. 3 farm boys pumped themselves up so much that their clothes were tearing. Their minds were clearly gone as they sniffed the air like dogs. It was too late to retreat without them noticing. They wanted blood, yours specifically.

You steel yourself for a hard fight and raise both of your hands toward the nearest blockhead. A frigid spray shoots forth and completely engulfs him. When the spray clears the blockhead you were aiming at is completely encased in ice, he isn't breaking out anytime soon. You don't know how you feel about killing these three but either way you need at least one alive for questioning, assuming he could recover from his current state.

The other two are somewhat taken aback by this development and seem to be hesitating. They are on their guard now.

You dash between the two remaining blockheads and go for the lake on the other side. Still bewildered, you avoid their swipes easily. You float at knee level at the water line about 30 meters into the lake. It is about 30 feet deep as far as you can tell. You can also feel spilled Blockbuster serum draining from the house, although not enough to affect you in any way. The 2 Blockheads stupidly wade in after you, although they seem to be strong swimmers and are closing the distance faster than you’d like.

You freeze the lake around your assailants, trapping them both. Their animal brains seem to realize their mistake as they struggle to get free. But like their friend back on shore they are gonna be stuck for the next few hours. You clock them both on the head as you pass them on your way back to shore. Passing the still trapped 3rd Blockhead you venture inside the townhouse and investigate.
You can immediately tell this is some sort of crackhouse. Wallpaper peeling, broken furniture, indescribable smells, the whole nine yards. Blocking the smell by manipulating the water in the air you notice that the door to the basement is open, and they have unanswered messages on their machine. You can also hear someone whimpering upstairs.

You press play on the blinking machine and a strung out sounding male voice comes from the speakers.

“Hey Nicky did you get the stuff I sent you, I went through hell bringing that shit upstate. Anyway remember the deal, your payment for holding onto these until the heat dies down is one canister for personal use and one to sell. But DO NOT use or sell any of it until we come back for the rest next month. This stuff literally makes you stronger than you feel like you are on that crystal I cooked up a few months back. But people on it tend to make noise so DO NOT open those canisters until the boss clears it, alright. Anyway I'll be in touch, don't fuck this up this could be big for the both of us. Delete this message as soon as you listen, got it? Good. Say hi to Cindy for me”

The message ends, only other messages are telemarketers and a call for “Dan” from his parole officer telling him to report in for a drug test. You somehow don't think Dan will be passing that. Anyway, you pocket the tape for your investigation. The whimpering from upstairs has gone silent and the basement still beckons.

You head upstairs into the master bedroom. The only things in here are several stained mattresses on the floor, a radiator, and a closet where the person you are looking for is clearly hiding. You open up the closet door to a kitchen knife coming down on you which you easily sidestep. A young woman tumbles out of the closet onto the floor in front of you. You snatch the knife away from her before she gets up and ask her who she is and what is going on here.

“Get away from me freak” she replies either not realizing or not caring that her friends would have found her if you hadn't come along. You also realize this women saw you using your powers, but see looks to be on something right now and my not remember you when she comes down.

“I've heard about freaks like you on the news, the alien in metropolis, the vampire in gotham, the ghost in the traveling circus, the end is coming and you are just another sign” The women continues to rant and starts becoming hysterical, you won't get anything more out of her for now.

Suddenly a burning smell overpowers your “smell shield” as you dubbed it. You then hear a fire roaring from the basement. You don't know if the blockbuster serum is volatile but you don't want to stick around to find out.

You and the woman land mostly safely on the ground below, you hurt your arm trying to cushion the blow for the both of you though. You drag the woman to the main road and freeze her hand to a street sign so she won't escape. You call Ray and give him a brief rundown before heading home immediately crashing on the couch, lacking the energy to climb stairs to bed.

“So that’s the long and short of it” you say as you finish relaying the whole story to your detective friend.

“Sounds rough kiddo, I would have preferred you called us immediately but all things considered you did a good job. You’re dad would not have been pleased to hear you got your melon smashed in by some juiced up tweekers” he chuckles. Ray the proceeds to intentionally spill coffee on the report he was writing and produces a fake he prepared to protect your identity. You and Ray planned for this sort of situation awhile ago. “Don't have me destroy evidence too often kiddo, I like to think i’m a good cop. Oh and we have the woman in the hospital but unfortunately the 3 tweekers died when the Blockbuster wore off. She doesn't remember anything about that night so all we have is the burned house to go on, I think this interview is over kiddo you wanna grab lunch on me?”

“Sure, I'm starving I skipped breakfast to come over here. One more thing, I found their answering machine tape. The latest message from the night before the incident is pretty interesting”. You produce the tape from your hoodie pouch and slide it over to Ray.

“Thanks Kiddo, this will definitely help us out.” He says taking the tape. “I’ll have to scorch it a bit and pretend like I found it in the wreckage though.”

The two of you head out and bump into your old pal Benjamin Levine scurrying around the office trying to keep up with the more senior detectives and the FBI goons that just arrived.

“Isaac” he exclaims running over to you and Ray. “You weren't involved in this fustercluck were you, why are you here?”

“No but he did hear the commotion from his place” Ray chimes in. “Benny, come with us to lunch, you know Isaac from high school and we're partners now”

“Sure anything to get away from the suits for a half hour” He says setting down the documents and coffee tray he was carrying and joins your party.

You and Benny have been friends since freshman year of high school. He always wanted to be a cop and just last month got his star. In a strange twist of fate, the chief partnered him with Ray so he could show him the ropes. He does not know about your powers and for now you’d like to keep it that way as you figure out what you’re doing going forward.

The three of you step out into the crisp October Penn Yan air passing by the squad cars electing to walk, winter is coming and considering your abilities that suits you just fine. You’ve called this upstate NY town home for as long as you can remember. Located right on scenic Keuka lake, although you’re not so lucky as to have lakefront property. The two cops and the metahuman walk down the street to the Penn Yan Diner and head inside, the only place Ray ever eats out at. You’ve had a hell of a weekend and you don't think it’s gonna calm down anytime soon.

For tech we were set to start in Seattle modern day looking for experimental weapons tech stolen from our parents by Intergang.

Yes, your father is gone off to who knows where again but hes been gone for over a year which is unusual even for him. Our mother was never a part of our lives save for some letters when we were young and dad dosent talk about her she is presumably still alive. You have an uncle on your fathers side whom you speak to occasionally but he lives in london. we also consider Ray family

Jukebox music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sil76t2X_DE&ab_channel=VelvetGreen

The sound of a bell signals the staff of your entry. The man behind the counter who has only ever made short grunts of acknowledgement in response to being greeted or ordered from to you over the years nods in your direction and goes to prepare the same things you three always order when you come in here. Somewhat impressive considering you three have never dined together in this establishment. Ray, Benny, and you sit down in a booth off to the side of the entrance when Benny strikes up a conversation.

“It’s good to finally hang out with you again Isaac, it seems like it’s been forever since we last did something like this”. It’s true, all of the people who you we're close with in high school have drifted away in the four years since then. The Cooke brothers both joined the marines and we're deployed overseas. Davy and his girlfriend, who’s name escapes you, went out west to become “botanists” and you haven't spoken to Cat in 2 years.

“Yeah, I just wish some of the other guys we're here”, you reply realizing how isolated you’ve become over the last 4 years.

“Same, so what have you been doing with yourself lately?” Benny asks.

“Besides work, Just kind of finding myself right now, so nothing much I guess”. You’ve had a job as an early morning radio DJ for one of the local stations for the past 3 years. But you hardly ever put your voice on the air, the owners just want you to play the music and keep the place running. They don’t want another personality in that timeslot.

But if ever given the opportunity you do have a persona of sorts that you’d run with given the opportunity.

Oceanus was what you we're workshopping, a bit of a mouth full for the radio but it sounds pretty cool considering your talents, could always use OC as shorthand as well.

Just as you answer your food arrives, Steak and eggs with ketchup for Ray, a blue cheese burger and waffle fries for Benny, and a double patty garbage plate for yourself. You’ve always had a big appetite, probably has something to do with your power. As you eat you decide it might be a good idea to ask benny what he knows about all feds creeping around

“Oh them, They're here to assist with the blockbuster investigation. They got here pretty fast, we were only a couple hours into our own investigation when we showed up. But I guess this stolen serum is a pretty big deal.” Benny leans in, “I'll tell you something else, they’re also trying to follow up on who or what incapacitated those blockheads last night. They were frozen in place when we got there. I think it’s that same ice dude who saved Cat from getting hit by that car senior year.”

Benny’s words dredge up memories of that night. You and Cat we're dating up to that point 4 years ago. One night you we're both out around town when Cat was almost struck by a drunk driver. You instinctually put a column of ice between the car and her. The car wrapped itself around the column and the driver was killed instantly. Cat being the genius she was figured out your abilities and while you remain friends she was scared of them at the time and broke up with you when she left of university.

Benny, Ray, and yourself make smalltalk as you finish your meal. As Ray and Benny prepare to head back to the station you prepare to go back to your place.

You ask Ray what he knows about the other strange superpowered people cropping up around the country.

“I don't know kiddo, Back in my day you would hear a whisper from time to time about someone with abilities like yours. But it was mostly rumor and I didn't put much stock in them until you came along.” He sighs, “I know about as much as you do, several cities have had these “vigilantes” as the news calls them crop up. Each one seems unique, we only know a little about metropolis’s “Superman” he says he’s here to protect the city with his powers and so far he seems to be telling the truth”.

“Thanks for the heads up” you reply as you walk out of the diner toward home.

You head for home only to find a familiar car in your driveway. It seems Catherine has come to pay you a visit. Speak of the devil you guess. You enter the house to find her on the couch watching the news, If Cat though something was important a little breaking and entering was no big deal to her. She turns to you and glares as she gets right into it.

“You really did it this time. Did you think you could go our fighting crime with your abilities and no one would bat an eye.” she says getting more and more worked up.

“Nice to see you too” you reply. “I don't see what the big deal is I stopped those guys from either going into town and causing chaos or spreading more blockbuster around the county.”

“I know, and that part you did great” she says almost excitedly. “But you left too much of a trail, once the feds have followed up on the blockbuster lead they'll turn their heads toward whomever beat them in the first place. You’ve heard the rumors about the government abducting people with exceptional abilities. You put the spotlight on yourself and you might not be safe here.”

“Is that all you came to say? I appreciate it but I’ve been doing this for years.”

“That’s why I brought you this” she says handing you a box. “I’ve been working on this for awhile now, I think the only way to keep yourself safe from the spooks is if you were to become one of these costumed heroes. And to do that you’ll need something like this. Its sturdy enough to stop a knife and allows for excellent maneuverability on both land and water.”

You look at the suit to see that it’s dark blue with olive green trim. There's some kind of rebreather and goggles that come with it.

“I know you can’t breathe as efficiently underwater as you can on land, this rebreather combined with your power should provide you with more than enough oxygen.”

“Wait, stop. You show up after 2 years of silence and throw a wetsuit at me and tell me to become some kind of hero. What the fuck, not even a hello. You can't just waltz in here and tell me to uproot my life like this, how did you get in here anyway?”

“The world is changing” she replies, “more people like you are showing up all over, not all of them are good. Blockbuster is a symptom of a bigger problem”. She becomes more upset as she speaks “I’ll admit I was afraid of your powers when I found out, but you have the opportunity to help a lot of people including yourself”. She bites her lip, “Does it surprise you to know that I still care what happens to you, I thought we we're still friends.”

“I don't know, I'll have to think about this”. “No promises but thanks for the scuba equipment” you reply sarcastically.

“If you’re gonna be like that then fine, see what happens but don't say I didn't warn you” She storms off to her car and peels out of your driveway. You briefly wonder what to do as you decide to take a nap. You've had a long day.

You wake up to a leather gloved hand over your mouth staring a faceless man in the... face you guess. You understably start to freak out. “Keep quiet” the man says as he removes his hand from your mouth “and listen”. “I’ve been following the the blockbuster trail as well, and I happened to witness your bout with those junkies, pretty good work.”

“Uh, thanks” you reply. “So you mind telling me who you are and why you're here since you seems so familiar with me” you say taking a particular tone with the strange intruder.

“Who I am is not important, I only came to warn you about the danger. Your girlfriend is right there is a van staking out this residence as we speak. They already suspect you”.

You look outside carefully though a mirror on the wall to see a dark van parked across the street. “They think you’re already gone since I packed up your things into your van and drove it off a few blocks. We need to sneak out the back”

“Wait what!?” you begin to reply as the faceless man grabs your hand and begins to run. “No time” he says, “I'm about to leave this town and I thought i’d help you out before I go. It’d be shame to watch another one get snatched, the NWO doesn't like the rise of people like us”

You arrive at your van as you we're about to protest the crazy man hijacking your van and spilling some Alex Jones level shit when you see the van once parked across from your house creep around the corner and turn its lights on. This might have some truth to it after all.

“Go, Drive” the man says as he runs toward the car “I’ll distract them”. You don't think twice before you start up the van and book it out of town. You don't know about the Illuminati, but something is going on. You might finally be compromised. You try to think of what you should do”.

You take out your phone and dial Ray.

“I knew this might happen one day kiddo, I’m sorry.” He says in a sad but not entirely surprised voice. “Swing by the waterfront and i'll see you off, I’ve also got something for you from your pop that will help.”

You go down to the waterfront where Ray’s cruiser is parked behind a bush. “The whole investigation it being handled by the FBI now, I’ve been kicked off the case. I’m sorry but it looks like you’ll need to leave town kiddo. Way back in the day your dad, mom and I used to be in the same special forces unit, I guess you could call us mercenaries, we didn't like the term and we pulled some shit I’m not proud of. We did make a lot of money thought, and everyone in our unit kicked into an account for your use should you ever be compromised. There’s more to the story but all I’ll say for now is no one in our old unit wants to see you dead it’ll be bad news for them. You’ll have to ask your pop for the rest of the story, it's not my place to tell you. Here take these, ones an atm card linked to the account we set for you. It has about 400 grand right now. And I’m not sure I should give you this But here is a list of people from our old unit who could possibly help you. Only call them as a last resort, they're not nice people for the most part and they’ll probably want to be paid.”

You pocket the card and take a look at the list. You don't recognize any of these names, S. Wilson, A. King, F. Lawton. G. Reyes. You take the card and ask Ray where you should go.

“I don’t know kiddo, You could try laying low in another city. Or go find your uncle, but you might have trouble getting out of the country so I’d wait on that. The last I heard from your dad he was in LA”

You have to decide where to go now. This is a big decision, If you go to London they’ll almost definitely pick up your trail, you don't even know if your dad is still in LA, and laying low in another city will ensure his trail will go cold.

You tell Ray you decided to head for LA and find dad. “Goodbye kiddo, I know you’ll get through this. I had hoped this would never happen to you but here we are”. He give you a hug which you return, before pulling out his hand cannon and shooting something out of the sky in the distance. “I’m still just a good as you Lawton”, Ray chuckles “Drones, I didn't know they deployed those. You have to leave now! I'll try and keep in touch”. You start up the car and head west as the sun fully sets. It's a long drive to LA from NY but you’re vehicle is loaded up thanks to that questionably sane intruder. You mentally prepare for the journey ahead as your hometown disappears behind you. Several bombs were dropped on you tonight and you’re too panicked to sort it all out now. The best option is to keep driving until you at least leave NY.
