You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you had just gotten off a rather major skirmish near the Straits of Malacca, where you managed to rescue Saratoga, Hazelwood, and Indianapolis from an Abyssal blockade. However, Indianapolis, apparently having been a prisoner to the Abyssals, had been heavily damaged during her captivity. So bad that Akashi was surprised she was even alive, and she immediately requested some emergency support overseas. The Admiral agreed and Shen and Vita would be flown over on an overnight flight.

By the time you got back to Yokosuka, it was already starting to get dark. You basically decided on your own that you'd break the news to Portland in the morning. No sense getting her worked up now.

For that night, you decided to stay with...

You decide to stick with Indy as she's rushed to the repair dock. Akashi does the best she can, mending and suturing the numerous cuts and lacerations on Indy's body and stemming all of the bleeding, but she's more of a Rig expert and the best she can do is dunk the poor cruiser into the repair pool and let the restorative waters do their work, at least until more specialized help can arrive.

You stick around, sitting at the side of the pool as Indy remains there, sleeping soundly but breathing through an oxygen mask.

"This definitely isn't battle damage of any kind. At least not from what I've seen." Akashi shakes her head, her fists balled and trembling. "Those monsters tortured her. Disassembled both her Rig and her body piece by piece."

"Why would they do something like that?" You mumble.

"I don't pretend to understand what the Abyssals think." Akashi grumbles. "But I suppose the best I can do is try to put what's left of her Rig back together. Can I trust you to keep an eye on her for the night?"

"Yeah, sure." You nod.

"Good, if anything happens, let me know right away." The repair ship instructs you as she starts putting on a pair of work gloves, obviously eager to set her mind on something else. "The workshop is just across the hall, you can't miss it."

"Gotcha."

With that, Akashi takes her leave, and it's just you and Indy again.

At that moment, you notice Indy squirming slightly in her sleep, a pained look on her face. Her injuries acting up again? Or just a bad dream?

You kneel down, keeping Indy's hand held in one of your hands while gently stroking her soaked hair with the other. You're not too sure why, but you also start softly humming the first happy tune you could of.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acnt3r6z5ns

For what it's worth, it seems to work. Indy's squirming stops and her breathing stabilizes. It's at this point you can get a much better look at her. On the surface, you could definitely see some similarities between her and Portland, enough to suggest they were sisters. However, the diverging physical traits you could see were short, pale purplish hair as opposed to Portland's solid brunette shade, and purple eyes instead of Portland's reddish hue. And, somewhat amusing enough, you could immediately tell that Indy had better frontal assets than her sister. Way better assets.

Maybe she stole them from Portland when they were still being laid down?

Regardless, you continue to hum to her all throughout the night...

---

The next thing you know, your eyes slowly flutter open as you wake up the next morning. You find yourself lying awkwardly on the edge of the pool, your hand still clutching Indy's. Somebody was kind enough to drape a blanket over you and leave a mug of steaming hot chocolate next to you as well. Probably Akashi's doing.

You unconsciously let out a loud yawn and wonder what to do next.

Also we need to make sure to keep Indy as far from Vahlen as possible. She'd either trigger Indy's PTSD when she hears what she does or else try to take Indy in for "examination".

You suppose it was time to bite the bullet and inform Portland. You carefully slip your hand out of Indy's grip and pull out your phone, dialing in Portland's number.

"Yes?" Portland asks, not a hint of fatigue in her voice. Of course she'd be up this early. "It's rare for you to be up at this hour, Hoel."

"Yeah, well, uh, there's something we gotta talk about." You say rather vaguely.

"Really now?" Portland pretty clearly sensed the anxiety in your voice, which has put her on guard. "About what, exactly?"

"Um, I think it's better if you come see it in person." You explain cryptically. "I'm over at the repair dock. Uh, you should know where it is, right?"

"I do." Portland replies, still wary.

"Well, how about you come down right now? Post haste?"

"All right, but this better not be some prank, or I'm going to shove this crutch straight up your bilge." Portland grumbles.

You REALLY hope she doesn't do that.

It's only a scant few minutes later that you hear Portland's approach, the ticking of her crutch repeatedly impacting the ground giving her away. Portland hobbles into the repair dock without any apparent discomfort or difficulty. Looks like her leg was largely healed.

"All right Hoel, what is this-" Portland's yes then lock on to Indy, and she goes completely silent.

You're about to say something when Portland practically disappears from your vision, the only thing left of her being her crutch, which is left wobbling upright for a brief second before falling over with a CLUNK. You turn your head to see Portland leaping into the pool, practically throwing all decorum out of the window.

"Indy!" Portland gasps, embracing her sister as carefully but as intimately as she can.

Indy's eyes, still bloodshot and red, crack open and she utters a hoarse whisper, smiling for the very first time since you found her.

"Hey Sweet Pea..."

"What happened?!" Portland whips her had back to you, and you could see it. The pure fury hidden behind her eyes, like she was ready to burn the world down.

They frighteningly reminded you of Sam's eyes, in fact...

You really wanted to just flat out lie to Portland, to tell her a comfortable truth to ease the pain, but you knew that if you did that, there was no way she'd ever trust you again. So you take a deep breath as you bite the bullet.

Indy gives you a glance and slight nod, as if giving you her blessing. That eased your concerns, somewhat.

"Saratoga and Hazelwood managed to spring her from Abyssal custody. They... they messed her up pretty bad." You explain.

"I... I see." Portland pauses for a moment. At first you terrified that she'd just freaking explode at you for telling her something she didn't like to hear, but to her credit, and your relief, she manages to keep the lid on. "Hoel, I have a favor to ask of you."

"Y-yeah...?" You bite your lip. Portland's voice felt colder than any ice, chilling you to the bone just by hearing it. "W-what do ya need?"

"Can you please meet the Captain and tell him that I'm combat ready?" Portland asks as she calmly rips the cast around her freshly repaired leg off.

There's a brief, awkward silence between the two of you as you glare at Portland and she glares back at you. However, your words had clearly dug into Portland as her expression falters for a bit. She clearly didn't expect to hear that sort of outpour from you.

However, it's Indy that strikes the finishing blow. She yanks Portland's glasses off of her face and calmly puts them on.

"Indy, w-what are you doing?!" Portland gasps.

"The Abyssals broke mine, so I'm borrowing yours." Indy says quietly. Not quite a whisper, but barely audible nonetheless. "Akashi said she'd get a new pair for me, but it's taking too long."

"I-" Portland pauses and then sags. There was no way she could keep up her righteous indignation in these conditions. "Forget I said anything, Hoel."

Indy smiles as she pulls the oxygen mask off.

"Tell me a story, Sweet Pea!" She smiles again. "You look so much more... grizzled, is the word...?"

"Well, I did get my leg shot off the other day..." Portland mumbles, her face reddening.

Indy gasps and look down at Portland's legs.

"It's fine!" Portland insists, now completely flustered since she had no idea what to do.

It was kinda cute, actually, though suppose it was time to give the two cruisers their personal space.

You decide to go greet Shen and Vita. You heard that they would be arriving this morning, so judging by the constant flights going in and and of Yokosuka nowadays, you figured they'd be arriving pretty soon.

You head out of the workshop, giving a respectful nod to Akashi as you pass. Akashi gives a happy wave as she puts the finishing touches on a pair of black framed glasses. You guess that like her sister, Indy normally sported her own set of spectacles.

You continue your way out of the workshop and into the harsh Pacific sun. It was a simple matter to hitch a ride to the airfield, where even now, you could see rows upon rows of cargo planes parked and unloading supplies, troops, personnel, and the occasional shipgirl getting transferred in. Meanwhile, more planes were landing just as fast as they could take off. It was a never ending stream.

However, you manage to spot a familiar old man and shipgirl walking along the tarmac, supervising the unloading of a number of crates.

"Yo! Old Man Shen!" You wave happily as you leap off the jeep you were hitching a ride on. "How's it going?"

"Ah, Hoel, keeping your Rig in good condition, I hope." Shen smiles at your greeting.

"Nope!" You chuckle.

"As I thought." Shen grins.

"And Vita! It's been forever!" You hug the British hospital ship.

"Haha, I hope you haven't been having any complications with the operation?" Vita pats you on the head. "No headaches or strange dreams?"

"Not really...." You shake your head.

"Excellent!" Vita smiles. "Now, about Indianapolis.."

"Yeah, she's at the workshop." You nod. "I can actually show ya the way."

"That would be most splendid." Vita smiles.

"I suppose we can trust the ground crew to handle our... 'cargo' safely." Shen grumbles.

"I suppose Vahlen's men could see to that." Vita sighs.

Now that she mentioned it, you could see those black clad Science Corps soldiers skulking about one of the cargo planes, giving the ground crew stink eyes whenever they got too close or got too touchy with the cargo.

"No, not yet, anyways." Shen shakes his head. "She's busy putting the finishing touches on her current project. I'm not sure if I should be saying this, but it's likely we'll be seeing her new weapon deployed in the coming days as a demonstration."

"And the cargo?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Most if it is specialized fabrication equipment that we couldn't risk transporting to Japan previously." Shen explains. "That way, we can continue upgrades on you as well as starting getting the JMSDF's shipgirls up to speed."

"And...some of it is special gear for Vahlen and her project." Vita sighs.

"How do you know that?" You ask.

"Well, I suppose you can say I'm somewhat involved in it, too." Vita explains, and then looks at you. "And no, I'm not allowed to say anything about it."

I have a feeling she's gonna look like a shipgirl but ping off everyone's sixth sense as an abyssal, and if she doesn't out-and-out abyssalize or otherwise go nuts during the demo we'll have to roll to resist tearing her apart, potentially followed by having to try to restrain the others who failed the previous roll.

You decide to drop the issue. You felt that you weren't get anywhere trying to pry answers from Vita. Instead, you guide them back to the workshop, where Shen and Akashi graciously greet each other with a bow. You figure that they both were fairly familiar with each other, given their respective roles. Vita gives Akashi a polite handshake, as befitting her British status.

"Shen, Vita, it's so good to see you two again!" Akashi gushes happily. "I wish we were reuniting under better circumstances, but there is something I need your help with."

Akashi first motions to the shredded metal scraps that were all that was left of Indy's Rig. All that was left was the bare superstructure, everything extraneous brutally yet precisely removed.

"This is indeed serious." Shen frowns as he leans in the inspect the tattered Rig. "On a normal machine, I'd write it off and scrap it. We're going to have to start completely from the ground up on this one."

"I suppose that would give you an opportunity to test some new upgrades you were planning." Vita winks.

"I'd have to determine the full extent of the damage first, but that is a possibility." Shen agrees.

"Anyways, Vita, Indy is this way. I'd like to get a full physical on her as soon as possible." Akashi continues.

"Of course." Vita nods.

"So, Shen, you don't happen to have any new upgrades or anything, do you?" You ask innocently.

"Hm, well, I do have a few new designs I was wanting to try out..." Shen nods as he examines what's left of Indy's Rig.

FIREPOWER

Mark 45 5"/54 Gun: A direct replacement for your current Mark 12 5"/38 guns, the Mark 45 cannon boasts improved fire rate, range, and penetration.

Railgun: A recent development, the railgun is the next generation of naval weaponry, providing a monstrous improvement in range, accuracy, and firepower. However, the power requirements and recoil of this weapon are so high that it would require the complete replacement of all current guns.

VLS System: Replaces your torpedo launchers with VLS cells capable of launching up to eight multipurpose missiles. Not compatible with helipad.

DEFENSE

Phalanx CIWS: Adds a rapid fire 20mm vulcan cannon capable of engaging aircraft, incoming munitions, and even light surface targets at close ranges.

SeaRAM: Adds a portable missile launcher that can engage aerial targets at a much longer range and accuracy than the Phalanx, but cannot engage surface targets.

Explosive Reactive Armor: ERA blocks placed at certain critical areas of your Rig will protect from the first hit that would otherwise cause catastrophic damage.

SENSORS

AEGIS Datalink (NEW): A modern radar is fearsome on its own, but when linked to the combined arsenal of the US Navy, it is nigh unstoppable. An AEGIS Datalink allows the user to directly or indirectly control any conventional asset with a datalink. Effects with other AEGIS Datalink-capable shipgirls are currently unknown.

Countermeasures Suite: A combination of decoys, chaff launchers, and electronic warfare modules can serve to defend from a wide range of threats.

Towed Sonar Array: Replaces your current sonar with a more modern towed array that vastly improves detection of underwater threats.

Drone Launcher: Adds a small catapult that can launch up to two automated drones that can serve as additional sensor platforms and scouts.

Helipad: Adds a helipad to your Rig that allows the use of a faerie helicopter, which can provide additional reconaissance, antisubmarine, and antiship duties. Not compatible with VLS.

PROPULSION

Diesel Electric Engines: Replaces your boilers with diesel engines in combination with electrical generators to improve speed and power generation.

Dynamic Screws: Propellers that can automatically change configuration serve to significantly increase maneuverability.

>VLS and AEGIS Datalink upgrades selected.

"An interesting choice." Shen chuckles. "At this rate, you'll become more an Arleigh Burke than a Fletcher!"

"Ha, I guess that's sorta true." You grin.

"But this would require quite a bit of retooling for your Rig. First things first, we'll have to pull those torpedo launchers of yours and graft on the VLS cells..." Shen nods, deep in thought. "Though I do have concerns about the AEGIS datalink."

"Why, because it might not work?" You ask.

"Not exactly." Shen shakes his head. "The shipgirl mounted AEGIS system is already tried and proven thanks to Annapolis."

Good old Anna.

"However, she's the only shipgirl so far that's taken the upgrade, so I can't say for sure what will happen if the two of you use the datalink to... 'interface' with each other." Shen words his statement carefully.
