You open your eye and immediately shut them again once your body acknowledges the splitting pain on the back of your head. With your eyes shut tightly, both your hands shoot up to feel your head. There is a large lump on the back of your head and you have no doubt that it is from when Chuck knocked you out. Slowly, you pull one of your hands away from the bump and place it on your mattress to sit up.

“It’s about time you woke up.” A drowsy male voice says from behind you. You open your eyes and look behind you. Slate is sitting in a folding chair that you can assume he got from Dick’s. He lets out a long yawn and stretches his arms up in the air. “We drew straws to see who should be here when you woke up to fill you in. Chuck was taken by surprise that you jumped in and a bunch of the new kids got a chance to restrain him. After that he went back to the 3rd floor while Jeremy and the twins took you and Reginald here to rest. The guy’s a little bruised but he’ll be fine.” Slate lets out another yawn before going on. “Anyway, since meals are only in the laundromat, there is no real way to keep those two from fighting again, so we are just going to have to keep an eye on them. Now if you excuse me, it’s almost time for breakfast and I haven’t got any sleep.” Slate then stands up, pulls the curtain away, and walks in the direction of his bed.

You look around the area and check your inventory. Under your bed is a fresh change of clothing, the bat you took yesterday, maps for the 4th and 3rd floors, your headphones, and the 2 CDs you’ve collected (The Will Of One, Unplayed CD). You decide to leave the bat there since you don’t have anything to carry it with.

You leave the mattress store and walk to breakfast. When you arrive there, you find that the twins, Svetlana, Gabriel, and Jordan are already there waiting for Monoscrap. You take your usual seat and reflect on the events of yesterday. Besides Chuck, the other “students” seem alright, but it is obvious that there is a significant amount of distrust between the two groups. Odds are, Monoscrap wants to use this to encourage the next murder.

One by one, the other students arrive and take their seats. Only Slate and Reginald appear to be absent and you doubt you’ll see them till lunch. You keep an eye on Chuck as he grumpily walks in and takes a seat near the back of the room. Finally, you start to hear the rusted sound of Monoscrap walking outside. The bear enters the room pushing a cart carrying everyone’s usual breakfast items and passes them out. once everyone starts eating, Monoscrap pushes the cart to the center of the room and climbs on top of it. You think he is clearing his throat, but the only sound that comes out is a mechanical crackle.

“I have an announcement to make. Today I will give you all your next motive to kill someone.” Monoscrap says joyfully. “The next person to kill will get ALL of his or her memories returned. You’ve all already figured out that some of your memories have been lost, so here’s your chance to get them all back. Now, this is a one-time offer, so if you’re not the next to kill then there is a good chance you’ll never remember.”

“I think I can live with that” Jordan says dismissively. “I just need to get out of here and find out where I stashed my journal, it will tell me everything I forgot.”

Monoscrap lets out an unsettling snicker. “You mean this journal?” in a swift motion, Monoscrap jumps off the cart and reaches into it. Jordan’s eye grow wide as the bear pulls out a notebook that looks extremely worn out. Jordan starts to stand up but stops as soon as he sees Monoscrap pull out a 2nd object.

“Now, now, now. I don’t recommend you try that.” Monoscrap says as he reveals a lighter and holds the book close to the flame. “It would be a shame if something happened to this, wouldn’t it?” Defeatedly, Jordan sits back down as Monoscrap backs out of the room. A moment later you hear a faint thud and assume that the journal was thrown over the railing down to the first floor. Monoscrap then returns, still holding the lighter. “Now, go on and do whatever you kids do at the mall. Oh, and be sure to fill in the others about this. We wouldn’t what them to miss out on the chance to get their memories back, would you?”

Everyone finished their breakfast and leaves the laundromat. You are the last “student” to finish eating and are alone with Monoscrap as he collects everyone’s trash.

You venture down to the 3rd floor in hopes of improving relations between the two groups. You see Frank and Gabriel by the railing and walk up to them.

“Oh, hello.” Gabriel says as you approach. He then holds out his hand and you shake it. “Frank and I were just taking in our surroundings.”

You follow Frank’s gaze and see the hole in the skylight where Jenny fell. Dark gray clouds are the only thing visible though the single hole while the glass is coved in too much dirt to see through. To you, it is a grim reminder of where you are, but you chose to say nothing. “So, what was it like down here before?” You ask trying to draw your attention away from the skylight.

“Well it had its pros and cons compared to how things are now.” Frank replies without taking his eyes away from the hole.

Gabriel nods. “Before all of you showed up, it was just the five of us locked away in that store. Monoscrap would come every now and then to give us food and taunt us. Despite there being a large selection of weapons, we all knew that it would be extremely difficult to kill without being caught. Chuck was the one who stepped up as leader and gave all of us strength. Right now, protecting us is his top priority. While I don’t approve of what he did last night, I can understand why he did it.”

“What do you mean?” You ask cautiously.

Frank takes his eyes away from the skylight and looks to you. “He means that Reginald is a threat. Guys like him treat other people’s lives like toys and only care about themselves. Chuck just wants to put him in his place before he can become a problem.”

You frown and say, "Everyone here is a threat. Some less obvious than others. That's why we have to work together. You have to agree Chuck went a bit overboard too, right? You then point at your head to remind them about how you were hurt.

Gabriel lets out a sigh and nods. “You’re right. Chuck doesn’t care if any of you live or die. His only priority is protecting anyone who is willing to follow him and no one else. It doesn’t make him much better than Reginald who seems to only value his own life.”

Frank nods. “Those two are going to keep butting heads till one of them drops dead or someone steps in and finds a way to make them get along.” He then stretches and starts to walk off. Honestly, I don’t want anyone to die, but if one of those two were gone, it would really help everyone.” Gabriel follows after Frank and leaves you alone at the railing.

You head back to the 4th floor and walk to the mattress store. You try to make as little noise as possible as you approach Reginald’s bed just in case he is still resting. When you reach his bed, you see that he is already awake and sitting up.

“Oh, I was wondering when you would show up.” He says in his usual tone of voice. He then turns to look at you in the eyes allowing you to see that the whole left side of his face is bruised and the black eye he is forced to wear. Reginald lets out a small breath and looks down again. “Thank you for what you did yesterday. I’m sorry that you got hurt.”

You fold your arms and shake your head. “We’re partners, isn’t that what we are supposed to do for each other?” Reginald just slumps his shoulders and lets you continue talking. “How did the fight start anyway?”

Reginald keeps his head down as he answers. “I was talking with Chuck about how things should be run around here. He- Well, to put it simply didn’t like the idea of anyone taking the role of leader, and before I knew it, we were shouting at each other. It didn’t take long for him to throw the first punch. Things only escalated when Monoscrap came in with everyone’s dinner, and two baseball bats. I guess our captor saw an opportunity and since we had already resorted to violence. Both of grabbed a bat and you know the rest.”

“Some of the others from the 3rd floor said that he only cares about protecting that group” you say hesitantly.

Reginald nods. “That sounds about right. If any of them got hurt, he would see himself as a failure.” He then stands up to look at you. “Just like I feel like a failure for letting you get hurt.” You give him a pat on the back and walk him over to the laundromat.

At lunch, everyone’s eyes are on Reginald and Chuck. The tension in the air is thick and it feels like one wrong move could start another fight between the two. Everyone finishes their meals and makes sure that Chuck returns to the 3rd floor, and you make sure that Reginald goes back to the mattress store to rest. You leave Reginald alone and go find something to do.

You walk over to the Lego store to find Slate and Brittany Ann constructing yet another Lego set. Judging by the smile on the cheerleader’s face, you can tell that this is a place that lets her escape the darkness that hangs over the mall.

“So, how are you guys holding up?” you ask while taking a seat at the table in the center of the store.

“I’m doing fine.” Brittany Ann cheerfully says as she places a hat on one of the minifigures. Before you can say anything else, Slate places his hand on your shoulder and motions towards the back of the store.

Slate looks to the cheerleader and says, “Hey, I need to talk to Samantha about something, you finish up here.” She only nods and you follow Slate as he rushes you to the back of the store. Once you two are far enough to be out of her earshot Slate lets out a small sigh and looks to you. “Sorry about that. Look, with what’s happened she is really taking it hard. This is the only place where she can escape everything and it’s best we don’t talk about all the bad stuff with her while she is in here.”

You nod quietly while thinking about the breakdown she had last time you talked with her. “So, what do you make of all this?” You ask.

Slate shakes his head and hides his face under his hoody. “This whole thing is one big mess. Who even knows if the new kids are telling the truth? For all we know, they could be working for Monoscrap. Every meal feels like a fight is going to break out, and I doubt that the next one won’t end as well as last night. If that wasn’t enough now we have to deal with how Jordan is now.”

“Wait, what’s up with Jordan?” You ask suppressed.

Slate lets out a long sigh. “You don’t know? Well I guess you would have been more preoccupied with Reginald. Alright, I missed the announcement at breakfast, but Jeremy and the twins filled me in on what happened. If you didn’t notice, ever since Alexa died Jordan has become much more aggressive and not the best person to be around. I have no doubt that finding out Alexa asked for it just made things worse. Now, I haven’t seen him all day, but I was told that after Monoscrap taunted him with that journal, he has been really unhinged. No one has seen him since breakfast and with the whole Reggie VS Chuck thing going on, I think I’m the only one who even saw that he wasn’t at lunch.”

“You think he’s alright?” You say concernedly.

Slate shrugs. “Well if he was dead I would think Monoscrap would have at least told us that someone had died like last time. However, that guy has more than a few screws loos now and I do not want to end up alone with him. Anyway, I need to get back to Brittany Ann.” Slate then turns around and walks back to the cheerleader.

You see this as a good time to leave.

Although you think it is foolish to do, you start to look around for Jordan. However, after checking almost all the stores on the 4th floor you come up with nothing. You think about how Reginald had warned you that Alexander was the only thing keeping Jordan from going off the deep end, and with the chance to reclaim his journal, your gut is telling you that he is planning to kill someone. You soon find yourself outside the Dillard’s. You weigh your options and think about how easy it would be for someone to hide behind a coatrack and jump out. Also, the clothing store would be the best place to hide since it is the largest store that any of you have access to. You decide to go down to the 3rd floor to look since it’s too risky to go in the Dillard’s alone.

As you get off the escalator, you see Gabriel standing by the railing again and walk up to him. “Oh, hello again.” He says as you approach.

You wave as you get closer. “Hey I’ve been meaning to ask you about something. 3 days ago, I heard some whispering coming from one of the lower floors. I yelled but they just stopped. You know anything about that.”

He shakes his head. “No, all 5 of us were locked in the store till yesterday. Whatever you heard, it wasn’t us.”

You frown and make a mental note to investigate the whispering more later. “By the way, have you seen Jordan?”

The Grand Faith thinks for a moment and shakes his head. “I don’t think so. Besides you and ‘that girl’ none of your group really come down here. Why do you ask?”

You frown and let out a sigh. “I was afraid of that. Apparently, he might have gone off the deep end, and no one’s seen him since breakfast. Everyone seems to be afraid to look for him or just doesn’t care. I think that he’s in the Dillard’s planning to kill someone.”

“I see.” Gabriel says and places his hand to his chin to think. “I think it would be best if I informed Chuck about this.”

“What?! Why? He’ll only make things worse.” You say in surprise.

Gabriel shakes his head apologetically. “I know you don’t approve of his actions, and honestly, I don’t either. However, he is our leader and this is a real threat that we need to put to an end ASAP. I believe that Chuck will do more good than harm if Jordan really does intend to kill someone.”

You bite your lower lip as you think of something so say. “Look, we both know that Chuck can be a loose cannon. This is a delicate situation, and he could easily escalate things just like last night.” You then point to the bump on your head to empathize your point. “Please, just give me some time to work things out.”

Gabriel is silent for a few moments before finally responding. “You have till after dinner. If you can’t get him under control by then, I don’t see any other option than getting Chuck involved. Just, please don’t make me regret this. Any blood that is spilled because of this is on both our hands.” He then walks away in the direction of the sports store.

You head back up to the 4th floor and go to the mattress store. Being careful not to wake up Reginald while he continues to rest. You collect the baseball bat from under your bed and proceed to run over to the Lego store. Before Slate can say anything, you slam your hand on the table and look both of your “classmates” in the eyes. “We’re going after Jordan, now.” You say forcefully.

State folds his arms and is clearly displeased that you chose to ignore what he had told you about Brittany Ann only a few minutes ago. “Why? If the guy really has lost it, then it’s best we keep our distance.”

“Shut up!” You yell back. “Like it or not, we are all in this together. The only way any of us can live is by being united as a group. That’s why Monoscrap made two groups, to prevent that from happening. It might be too late to prevent there being a divide the 3rd and 4th floors, but we can stop another from forming.”

Slate says nothing and is clearly thinking about how to respond. Before he can open his month, Brittany Ann stands up and speaks. “Your right. I’ve been hiding in here to get away from everything because I’ve felt helpless. If this really is a chance for me to help everyone finally get along then I have to help.”

Slate shakes his head. “Fine I’ll go to. If you two can’t talk him down, then you’ll need me to help restrain him so he doesn’t hurt anyone.”

You feel a sense of relief upon hearing their agreement to asset you. “Alright, the Dillard’s is the last place I haven’t looked, so he has to be in there.” Both of them nod and follow you outside in the direction of the Dillard’s. As you enter, you can see that one of the clothing racks near the entrance has been disassembled. You suspect that Jordan might be trying to follow Reginald’s example and recreate the sharpened metal rods.

Besides choosing to side with Reginald, this is the most we've ever deviated from what I had planned. I hope this is a good thing. Since we are dealing with something that is essentially a series of murder mysteries within a larger mystery, I’m doing my best to find the right amount of freedom to give you guys. After all, too much freedom could lead to you walking in on the murder as it happens and ruin the mystery, but too little freedom could lead to me railroading the story and you all feeling like your choices don’t matter.

I had intended for us to stay far away from Jordan and let him do his own thing, but now I’m doing my best to come up with this radically different series of events. I’m not saying this to influence the choices you make or anything, just thought I would share how much fun it is to see things go in an unexpected direction.

“Hey Jordan, you in here?” You shout as you start to walk into the store. Both Brittany Ann and Slate crouch down and do their best to conceal themselves in the rows of clothing while they follow close behind you.

“What do you want?” you can feel your heart stop as soon as you hear Jordan’s voice. As if on cue, the Grand Chronicler walks out from behind a shelf. He is carrying one of the rods from the disassembled rack in one hand. Although it isn’t as well-crafted as Reginald’s the rod is still sharpened enough to stab someone. Jordan quickly looks you over from head to toe and his eyes focus on the bat in your hands. “What are you planning to do with that.” He says in a disturbing tone of voice.

“Hopefully less than what you’re planning to do with that.” You respond pointing at the rod in his hand. Jordan sneers and looks from side to side as if checking to see if anyone else is around. You can tell what he is thinking and try to talk in the calmest voice you can. “It doesn’t have to be this way. Just put the rod down and let’s go somewhere we can talk this out.”

The boy only shakes his head. “No, I don’t think so. I finally have a way out of this nightmare and back to my normal life. Thanks for being stupid enough to come alone.” He then charges at you with all his force and swings the rod aiming for your head. You do your best to dodge, but you end up tripping and falling to the floor. A chill goes over your whole body when you hear the sound of the bat rolling away and realize that you must have dropped it when you fell.

Looking up, you see Jordan get ready to take another swing at you, but before he can do anything Slate tackles him to the ground. While the two boys fight, Brittany Ann runs up and helps you to your feet. Just when it looks like State is about to restrain Jordan, the Grand Chronicler breaks free and lunges for his weapon. Before you can even process what is going on, you see the cheer leader attempt to block his path only be punched in the face and knocked down. Jordan pauses as if thinking about his next move, but immediately bolts for the door when he sees Slate start to get back up.
>>
>>941341
You help Slate pick Brittany Ann off the floor and the 3 of you run out the door. You have no clue what direction he went. Slate takes a quick look around and says. “I’ll check the Lego store. Brittany, you stay here, you have no way to defend yourself. Samantha you’ve spent the most time with the kids on the 3rd floor, you go get their help.” You nod and start running towards the escalator. Although you hated the idea of bringing Chuck into this, it is obvious that words aren’t going to solve this and Chuck is the strongest “student”.

When you reach the escalator your stop dead in your tracks. The mechanical stairs have stopped moving on their own and at the bottom of the left escalator is Jordan. You run down the stairs as fast as you can, but slow down once you get a better look at the sight. The metal rod has been plunged through Jordan’s chest and blood is pouring down his body. For a few moments, you gaze in shock at how he is propped up by his knees and the rod. Finally, the body slowly starts to slide in the pool of blood and falls over. All you can do is scream.

>Well we did agree to from an alliance with him.
He did have the fact that we were the first to go look for a weapon over us. At the moment it made sense to at least play along, considering he was the only other student to talk to us

Think of it this way, now you habe a more compelling character on your hands.

Also, if you want to tell us, what would have happened if we went for the "I want to have your babies" route? It looked more like it was there so we would chose the other answers more than anything
>>
>>942167

>At the moment it made sense to at least play along,
Yeah, but the anon who made that choice didn't say that we were playing along. I'm not sure if I’ve made it clear, but I go with the choices of whoever posts first, but I will do my best to include every post so long as they don’t contradict an earlier post (like when I ask who to hang out with and get two answers I’ll try to do both). So, if someone had added that we were faking it, then that would be a different story, but as it stands the alliance is 100% real.

>Think of it this way, now you habe a more compelling character on your hands.
That’s true. It’s also why I enjoy when things go differently than what I had intended. It forces me to give some of these characters more depth and motivations to justify their actions. I have ideas for how to develop just about everyone a little more, but I can only do it if people chose to hang out with them.

>what would have happened if we went for the "I want to have your babies" route?
I have no clue what would have happened and was banking on no one going for it. I had a gut feeling in that someone would abuse the “write in” option and do something like that, so I made it more difficult for it to happen but not impossible. Since it was still early in the quest, I knew that a choice like that would set the tone for just about everything to come, but now that we are this far in it would be seen as out of character and could be ignored.

>I'm not sure if I’ve made it clear, but I go with the choices of whoever posts first
Oooooooh. You playin with fiya, boyo.
I am not going to say you are heading for disaster because, so far, you've done a good job.
So far, it works beautifully because either our opinions were pretty homogenous or there were few of us playing at the same time. But it doesn't look like it would scale very well.

>but I can only do it if people chose to hang out with them.
The thing is, that we are a really constrained right now when it comes to time for interactions. At most we have between 1 and 2 prompts we can dedicate to interacting with characters before something happens that requires our attention. Like a particular student acting strange, some clue that becomes evident, our meals. Even the buddy system hasn't been too helpful since our conversations with our buddies have been pretty short. So far, time has been a pretty valuable resource for someone who has no actual responsabilities like us.
But hear me on this, if this is the amount of interaction you can manage comfortably to give us this amount of quality, then keep it at that. Stretching yourself too thing won't do you no good.
Take this point as something for the long term, not the short term.

>someone would abuse the “write in”
We can't force you to write anything you don't want to. If we go too far off the walls, then point it out how that is not the quest you want to run.

>now that we are this far in it would be seen as out of character and could be ignored.
See, this here might be a problem with the way the first comment "locks in".
So far, i've been playing Samantha's alliance with Reggie as a relationship out of pure convenience.
We didn't know if his love declaration was really true or if it was a further attempt at manipulating us.
What happens if i vote first and phrase my vote in a way that highlights my view of the alliance not being 100% real?
What happens if i vote and decide that Sam has developed some feelings for Reggie?

Let me give you an example
If you gave us the choice during the fight between Reggie and Chuck, then i would have voted to tackle Chuck because i care enough about Reginald to not want him to die, but not enough to shield him with our body. We'd probably still have recieved a bonk to the head, but that's besides the point.
But that choice was never mine to make because we are stuck on a "100% alliance" mindset.

Also, if you'd allow me to nitpick, there has been very little chance for us to develop a backstory or personality
Like, so far i want to sit down with Reggie and drop some tragic backstory that is tied with the fact that we CAN'T forget anything that we do or is done to us. That "moving on" is not an option because no memory ever fades. To see if he is still interested. No rape, i promise
Or the fact that mayyyybe we might have developed a small crush for Alex when we talked that night, making the impact that his death impatc on us a bit larger
Heck, we didn't get the chance to give a speech at the veredict to the cuplrit. I had like a whole speech in mind in case Jeremy was the culprit. But even after the true culprit was discovered we didn't have any chance to give our input.

Maybe you have your idea of how Samantha is suppossed to be already, and that is why you didn't give us the option to put our reactions. and that's okay. Really.

But if, for some reason, you hear this rambling anon, and decide to give us inputs to fleshen out Samantha. Do not use your "first come, first taken" option there. If the other players are not okay with my input, i don't want them to be stuck with a character they don't want to play. Let's us vote in those cases.
Like when we chose her appearance.

Also, i am enjoying the quest. Not panning it or anything.

Alright, I'll keep this in mind moving forward. I'm already thinking about the feedback from the first trial and thinking of ways to adjust it for this round. It would be dishonest to claim that I know what I’m doing because still trying to figure out the best way to do this. Thanks for speaking up about these problems.

Sorry if this sounds like some kind of automated PR response. It’s just that’s a lot to take in, and it’s easier to just say that I’ll keep it in mind (and I really will) than to write a proper response to all of it.
