"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

Oxenfurt Bridge, to the South-West, sometime after High Moon

The Paladin sat slumped against the wall, hand covering his face as the other loosely gripped an exquisite blade of moonlight dulled with blood and rotten fluid. As his feet lay a crumpled figure, his faithful squire Timone Anais. He had been cut down by the Paladin's own page, young Michael. It was one of the Necromancer’s favoured tactics, to raise their own recently slain comrades in the midst of the battle itself.

The fighting had spread to the bridge itself now. The town on the eastern bank was lost entirely, overrun by the rotting, the vampiric and the mercenary. It was the latter of these that were attempting to storm the bridge right now, the noise of fighting growing closer to the Paladin’s ears.

His hand tightened on the Blessed Blade as he rose. The desperate rear of the Neumunster Legionaries turned as he approached, their ranks parting before him as grim veterans and fresh-faced recruits looked on in awe. There was something about his presence, men who had started to shuffle back under the onslaught now surged forward behind him. And then, he was on the front lines. Face-to-face with these black armoured sellswords.

”Turn my page, will you?” The Paladin’s voice drowned out the sound of his blade cleaving the first warrior from shoulder to hip, their chestplate cloven like thin bark scraps.

”Take this bridge, will you?” The blade licked out again, carving a black helm clean in half along with the skull inside. The backswing took another mercenary in the armpit, they crumpled with a pained gurgle even as the Paladin stomped on the neck of another one trying to lift themselves up from the ground. Either a newly raised corpse or still living wounded was anyone’s guess.

”KILL MY SQUIRE, WILL YOU?” Half a dozen seasoned soldiers fell in a matter of moments under the assault. Without warning he stumbled forward, no more foe to face. The black armoured warriors had broken, a blue haired officer trying to stop it devolving into a full-scale rout.

[2/2]

The Neumunster Legionaires cheered even as they literally dragged the Paladin back. Ser Liam, recently knighted and from a different Order altogether, undid the Paladin’s pauldron to staunch a wound the Paladin hadn’t even noticed.

”They’re coming at us again, Sir Knight.” The bloodspattered Neumunster Sergeant spoke softly.

”By the Mother, Sergeant! That’s the fifth time tonight!” Ser Liam objected as he added another bandage. None of their holy powers could be wasted on healing, not when so much of their strength was being redirected to ward off the Necromancer’s offensive spellwork. ”How can you ask any more of him? He’s saved everyone!”

The Sergeant shook his head at the young Knight-Errant. ”They ain’t saved until they’re saved, boy.”

Despite the Sergeant being thrice Ser Liam’s age the Knight still took offence to being called ‘boy’ by a social inferior. A hand on his shoulder gave him pause. The Paladin looked between the Knight and the Sergeant. He nodded.

”Again, then.”

The Neumusnter Sergeant grinned at Ser Liam and then winked. Winked.

”Best job I ever had.”

It was then that Ser Liam realised he was in the company of two heroes. Not one.

Praise be unto Allah and/or other possible deities!

Let's get this show on the road. I'm going to try and find a way of doing this that doesn't take a bajillion (real number) years. Take your time voting.

----------------------

Kresden, to the North-East, that morning.

You awake to darkness, and pain. For a moment you fear the worst. This is death and Below surely. A fate well suited to the likes of…

… it is then that you realise you’re wearing a blindfold. Through the thin slit of vision granted by its slightly askew angle you begin to piece together the crime scene. From the way your arms are pinned above you it’s obvious you’re tied up, and have been for a few hours at least. But this material you’re sitting on is too soft to be a torturers chamber… a bed?

Directly to your right is an unidentified bakery object. Possibly a pie. You shift your position slighty, the crumbs rustling under your buttocks confirming it is indeed a pie. An after-action midnight snack, or something altogether more sinister? You tried foodplay with Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova once, and that didn’t work out so well for you, or the strawberries that were involved. Licking your lips confirms the taste of blueberry, blood and other miscellaneous fluids.

The blood on the sheets is worrying enough. What has you –really- wondering what’s going on is the distinct claw marks on the part of the wall you can observe. What the hell happened between you and CPL ‘White Bitch’ Tara last night? You spot a limp figure slumped over the couch. You fear the worst.

“Tara? Oh Father, are you okay?!” Your voice sounds hoarse and rough, as if you’ve been smoking for days.

“Hmm… already? Yeah, yeah keep your pants on, babe.”[/I] You can almost hear the smirk as the naked body shuffles over slightly to face you. ”Just give me a minute, will ya? Can’t feel my fekking legs after that last round. Fekkin’ hell.”

----------------------

> “…babe?” You didn’t think that was even in ‘White Bitch’s vocabulary. [Courage]

>”Where did… all this blood. And… a pie?” Verify that there is not a dead body, possibly a baker, in the room. [Elite]

>”Are those… claw marks? Did the Grenn attack again?” If they did they –really- hated that wall. [Experience]

>”Can you untie me? ….Please?” Your arms are kind of sore. [Clever]

CPL 'White Bitch' Tara is way more scarred, fit and... well, -meaner- than pic related. Still would bang though.

”Where did… all this blood. And… a pie?”

You sincerely hope the two aren’t somehow connected.

”Blood? Hah! Don’t look at me, Prince. I’m not due for another week.” The Corporal’s crass laughter is strikingly at odds with her attractively bared outline. Makes for a good view. ”-That- is wax. And –that- is when you’re wound tore open again. It’s going to get infected at this rate.”

>Lt. Prince [11/15 HP]
>Wounded (-5DC)

“Excellent, excellent.” No dead bodies, that’s always good.

”Hmmmm. I’ll say.” The NNCO, extra N being for Naked, stands up and walks languidly over to the bed, flicking your

”Have to admit, your foreign dirty talk was something else. Sounded absolutely filthy.” She must have noticed your concern because she snorts and pats you on the chest. ”Don’t get me wrong, I was –way- into it.”

It’s not her feelings on dirty talk that you’re concerned about though. The way she’s sitting on the bed does wonders to distract you though…

”I was speaking black tongue?”

You don’t remember that. Or a lot actually. Come to think of it it’s wasn’t the first time you blacked out that night. Of course the results were far more agreeable…

“Speaking it, shouting it, whispering it. Whatever. Probably kept Trooper Kid up in the next room the whole night.” The NNCO leans over to your ear and breaths, breasts brushing over your chest lightly. ”My favourite was the whispering, personally. Damn, sir, but it gets a girl going. Got anymore of it?”

”Ah well. Unfortunately, duty calls. Actually, medical attention calls first.” You look down at the Corporal, noting exactly where her head is hovering over. ”Untie me, please.”

”Ohoho, is that an order, Mr-Liuetenant-Sir?” She laughs slyly as she strokes your thigh.

You consider for a moment. Seeing as you don’t want to bleed to death OR have rot set in… ”Yes. Yes it is.”

”Oh.” The Corporal looks embarrassed for a moment as she fumbles with the bonds. ”Right sir. Obviously. The bleeding and all.”

”I’d love to oblige but-“

”No no, I was on my last legs anyway.” She sighs exhaustedly as she finishes undoing the cord. ”Permission to collapse in a sexually satisfied heap for now, sir?”

Looking outside the window you can see the glimmer of sunrise. Well past when you’re supposed to be up, really, which is first light.

Trooper Kid bears all the symptoms of not getting any sleep last night. Sunken eyes, heavy lids and the constantly-irked expression of the truly sleepless. Judging from their accusatory stare as you sit down at the dinning table, it’s likely your fault.

”Is Kid okay? They look pretty tired.” Trooper Saint frowns at the young recruit as she enters, noting the little head bobbing lazily almost into their breakfast.

”Paperwork. Kept the poor tyke up all night.” Kid rolls their eyes at your explanation but doesn’t object. Addressing the potential Behemoth in the room you turn to Saint. ”You didn’t …notice anything?”

Judging from the glances of the waiting kitchen staff, everyone else certainly fekking did. But you don’t care about them, they were going to judge you based on the uniform long before your carnal inclinations were made known.

”Didn’t need to. Saw the whole mess firsthand.” Saint looks at you worriedly. For a moment you think she’s talking about you and White Bitch which would make her unfazed expression a very odd reaction.

”Schuster and the new Grenn recruit at each other’s throats. Mask wasn’t present for the roster call. And now the Sergeant having a go at Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus over that spy incident at the gate. Saint smiles apologetically at a passing maid as Kid virtually launches themselves into the breakfast with the gusto of an enraged wyvern. ”Honestly, sir, I’ve been looking all over for you. You weren’t in your room.”

The good news is that she’s clearly oblivious to your dark deeds, possibly both of them, last night. That makes her a very heavy sleeper or a very poor detective which, given your orphan lie, may indeed be the case. The bad news is that it has clearly been a busy, busy morning. And you’ve completely trashed someone else’s room but that’s some poor maid’s problem not yours.

Get kid to run a message to Bad Hand and co. Letting them know we're dealing with this first and to tell kid where we can meet up with them after.

” Mask didn’t show up? Undead don’t desert or slack off, Trooper.” Mask isn’t like most of them sure, but he’s operated like clockwork the entire time you’ve known him. ”Saint, you’re in charge of tracking him down. He doesn’t have wings so he must be in town somewhere.”
”…can’t believe I’m looking for a cursed corpse and –not- banishing it…” You hear Saint mutter as she leaves.
”And Kid, can you grab a healer? This bleeding-to-death deal is getting old.” Trooper Kid stuffs the rest of the bacon in their mouth and runs off. The Manor must have a doctor on call or something because Trooper Kid arrives back in a few minutes with a well-dressed man carrying a briefcase in tow.
A maid takes his coat for him and provides a seat and table for his tools at the dining table. Upon seeing your half-treated wounded, the stitching clearly torn open repeatedly, the bespectacled gentleman regards you the same way a swordsman would regard someone that carries a chipped blade.

He huffs, his walrus-like moustache twitching, but he gets to work without comment.

”Ah! Fek!”

”Hmmph. Be still. Unt no such Language.” The doctor’s accent is exceedingly heavy, probably hailing from the far west of Neumunster that borders on Chevalisse. Accent be damned though, he’s a bloody made with those tools of his. You blanched when he unrolled what looked like a torturers kit in front of you, but by Below you’ve never seen anyone stitch flesh and suture like that before.

”Say doc…You looking for a job?”

The doctor glances at you cautiously from his work on your shoulder, mostly done now.

”The days of gallivanting off must be behind me. I have mine family to look after.”

”A family man, eh?” You can’t help but grin at his pronunciation of ‘gallivanting’. You can tell you have his attention. Having a key position on the forces of the winning side, at least where this front is concerned, has its own appeal. A man has to look out for his family after all, even if he might make more tending to calls from the Town.

”Two girls. Unt one boy .” He pauses with a sad twitch of his mustache. ”Their mother passed last winter.”

”Shit. Sorry to hear it doc.

”I –said- watch your language. The doctor punctuates his words with a few final stitches.
Bad language is going to be the least of his worries in the Company, but you really do need a healer in this platoon. And this guy is really fekking good.

A doctor’s wage would only be partially covered by the Company allowance for hangers-on and attendants of individual platoons. You’d have to pay some of it out of your own pocket to cover the difference, but one of the perks of this new officer gig is that your wage is much better than what it used to be. The problem is an attaché could realistically leave at will, and you don’t have the same official authority over them.

You could try to convince him to sign up permanently. It’d be cost free, but it’s a whole lot less appealing. Especially since it explicitly entails training in arms and a permanent position, for life, and makes no accounting for children. Family folk rarely go for that.

You could go halfway and write up a contract for a few months with discipline, pay and duties all covered in detail. Trooper Arlen Rivers is something of a barracks-room lawyer. Captain ‘Cutthroat’ Kiranova may pissed at your presumptuousness of drafting a contract on the Company’s behalf, or they might not give a fek if a decent doctor is involved.

"Very well, ve have un agreement then." The doctor finishes washing his hands and then proceeds to shake yours. Firmly, with typical Neumunster precision. "I do think it odd however, that you would hire a man whose name you have not yet asked."

"Of course. I am Lieutenant 'Prince', pleasure to meet you Dr...?"

"Kurerfitz. Dr. Arnulf K. Kurerfitz."

"Excellent. Trooper Kid will help you along with the paperwork and show you the works." You ignore Kid's pained groan, trying to remember the mouthful that is the new Doctor's name. You can almost guarantee that no one in the platoon will call him anything other than...

Upon hearing your offer Dr. Kurerfitz shakes his head.

No... No, I think not." Another said twitch of his mustache. "The children have seen enough of fighting...

He remains silent for so long you think that's the end of it. When he speaks up again it surprises you.

"Do you know that ze Warlord has children on the front lines in his armies?" The doctor looks away from Trooper Kid sharpy, he starts concentrating very hard on cleaning his spectacles. "Not drummer boys, banner bearers unt servants... zo that is bad enough. No, zis Warlord has entire regiments of children younger than this one, fighting and dying in ze hundreds. Thousands."

It takes a moment for the good doctor to compose himself. He gestures towards Trooper Kid, obliviously inspecting potential silverware.

"Perhaps you could spare zis one from there duties, ja? I am training my son to be a doctor, ze girls nurses." He nods as if you also think it is a good idea already. "Zis one could sit in on their lessons. It would be no trouble. And zen, there will be a future to think about."

You decline to mention joining the Company is usually for life. But having a trade where not everyone is trying to kill you does come with options...

"The child is mute, ja?" Doc strokes his chin. "My wife knew the hand signals well. This I will teach him. You also."

"We already taught him those." You beckon Trooper Kid over. "Trooper. Show me the signs for 'Kill Order', 'Take Cover' and... 'Friendlies'..."

True to form Kid shoots of the signals as well as any wannabe-Ranger, but for some reason Doc seems unimpressed.

"...I see. I think though, I will perhaps expand the child's somewhat limited vocabulary, ja?" The Doc nods at your apparent agreement, or lack of objection. "Come along now, boy. Your lessons begin immediately."

Trooper Kid rolls their eyes at you behind Doc's back, but they do follow them out.

Overall, you think that went well. Now...

It should boost our rep with Saint as well. Make it look like we're capable of caring long term, not just out of convenience.

Hm. I wonder. If we do also get White Bitch to supervise, do you think we could excuse future flings to Karanova and Saint as us hot dicking her into a better person and a more effective member of the Company?

Not to mention the rep boost it'll give us if we can actually dock White Bitch into doing paperwork and looking after a child.

If she complains about us trying to redeem her, we can just say we actually just hate paperwork, and the kid is an amputee in a mercenary band working for the Bad Guys note the skulls and undead and child soldiers. A redeemed White Bitch would be less useful than a sick twisted Bitch that likes to get beat up by our dick.

Aight. I AM pretty high right now.
>>
>>947319
Nah man. It's all about the implication.

Also we should make them do paperwork. And in true army fashion, we should make up pointless paperwork or have them do paperwork that's already been done and just keep tearing it up and telling them to do it again.

We'll have them begging to face us in combat and risk losing a limb. At which point we can show them our new Adjunct and inform them that dueling us will result in both the loss of a limb AND ETERNAL PAPERWORK. And the girl has seniority so they'll report to her. And White Bitch is supervising the entire thing and pissed off about it and only kept there by her desire for that Dark Tongue shit we do that really turns her crank.

------------------------------------

You decide to give Saint a little more time, you’re not babysitting the woman after all. And Undead creatures are her speciality, even if it’s more on the cleansing them side of things. As for Bad Hand… you’re okay with putting that talk off for a while. You’re halfway to the courtyard when the clip-clop of hooves on pavement alerts you to an approaching rider.

It’s a Ranger, one of the younger Zakashi sisters. More than once you’ve caught this one staring at Trooper Kid for longer than socially acceptable. They do stare a lot though. If she’s reporting new patrolling accounts directly to you rather than LT ‘Shaftie’ Adams, that’s probably a good sign everyone knows you’re the one calling the shots.

”Column marching. From East.”

Since this isn’t the one with all the war paint, this is four more words than you’ve ever heard her say before. You didn’t even know the other sisters could speak the common tongue at all.

”Are they ours?”

The young woman shrugs.

You’ve spent a lifetime interpreting shrugs. It comes with small-talk during cards, ‘interpreting’ orders and generally being a soldier. This shrug says ‘I reckon so but I wouldn’t put gold down on it’.

Intel put the majority of Free Alliance forces to the West of your position aside from this troublemaker Helmer dan Jorst. That said you shit on their intel, it never fails to fek you over when it matters the most. The province of Tassenland should have caved after your last battle against them but you don’t know who was sent there to handle that. The soldiers you ambushed over a week ago were barely men. If Tassenland has put another force together already, and that quickly, they must be really scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

The Zakashi sister is looking around furtively from her horse, more the size of a pony. She turns back to you with a disappointed expression.

”Where Kit?”

Wow, she’s a complete blabbermouth today.

Punishment duty is all in the details. It has to be unpleasant, unfair, and ideally pointless on every sense except to be unpleasant and unfair to the poor SOB getting it.

Don't even look at their paperwork before tearing it up and telling them to do it again. Keep from them even the satisfaction of personal improvement. But get a second person to actually watch them and let you know if they're being sloppy so you can take the sloppy form, ask them if that's their best work and without pausing tell them that it's their best work because you know they wouldn't insult you by doing anything less when you're giving them this valuable educational opportunity at the cost of your own time band valuable Company writing supplies. Why, you're so proud you're going to write them an encouraging note at the bottom. In fact you're going to keep it with you for and bit to show the rest of the men just what they can do if they apply themselves to it.

Another good way to twist the knife is after a few hours of harassment paperwork, you get a couple of guys to come up where they're too far to talk but can easily be seen and have them do a punishment detail of one guy digging a holes while the other fills them in. Nothing worse than realizing you actually WANT what you used to think was the worst thing to really drive home how terrible your current situation is. Make sure to yell loudly at the Hole Team that they're unlucky to have gotten in trouble after the cushy paperwork jobs were taken.
>>
>>947392

>>947354
I mean. Just saying. If we have to do some intimidating when we talk to Schuster and the Grenn could we maybe use this as a threat? Make sure they know we've really thought all the details out.

I really want a map.
>>
>>947398
I'm high as fucking balls son. Pretty much everything after threatening them to do paperwork under White Bitch is me building up just how much thought and effort can actually go into punishment duty and making troopers rather get stabbed a little bit instead.

Like, not losing an appendage or getting a deep torso stab. Buy maybe a stab in the leg or the arm, or getting a bit of an ear or an finger cut off.

Also, I get a giggle out of thinking how our rep could develop.

We already survived a demon filled city and come back with a Sword Saint working for us, fucked up some wolf dudes and kidnapped a king, and then just last night we brutally murdered a dude in a berserk rage and the fucked the crazy out of the company Psuychopath.

And I just want our guys, when other forces ask them if we're as bad as the rumours say, to admit that all that stuff happened but with grey faces and distant gazes confide in shameful whispers that the absolute worst is all the paperwork. To stonily stare as the laughter dies out and people realize that they aren't joking.

And when they ask if they're really serious about the paperwork, to have our guys say they'd rather be forced to fight or get fucked by us before getting yelled at for filling out a AB2 form for inventory of left handed screws designed for use in siege ladders, and siege ladders ONLY, in blue ink instead of black when they aren't even using real pens but just sticks so as to "not waste paper because that's valuable, unlike your time".

>2 Success

It takes the rest of your walk to the courtyard to coax a cogent picture out of here. She describes the nature of the force and its location well enough, but the details of the banners, or eagles in the case of Legions, are beyond her limited grip on the language.

The force is entirely on foot, but it’s ranks are both living and a small(ish) detachment of undead. So you’re fairly certain they’re on your side unless the Free Alliance has resorted to those measures as well. And that would mean they have a mage on the same level as your employer which is frankly terrifying. But who is in charge of these dead then? A Syka sympathetic cultist? A vampire without the leash of Vermillio tethered around them anymore? It’s little fekking better.

The green and yellow uniforms on the living she describes seems to match the Tassenland column you fought before. If they’re matching alongside the dead it could be the scraping of conscripts as a tithe to their new Necromancer master.

The other portion of living weren’t described too well. You reckon they are mercenaries but definitely not the rest of the Company which is to the South and West. It could be either the Yellow Dogs or the Turncoat Prince’s men.

Overall, you know that a force of mostly living infantry that is roughly your force’s size or a bit larger will be here before nightfall and that they are very probably on your side. That gives you 7-8 hours to… well shut the guts you guess. Maybe have the Ranger’s line up a few quick-fix traps in case they’re hostile. Either way that number isn’t enough to storm the town, and you won’t fall for the same trick that got you in here.

Unless they have a gifted mage. Which is why you fekking hate mages.

guts = gates.

Though "shut the guts" does sound like it could be a soldier's term.

[2/2]

You’re somewhat distracted by the scene in the courtyard in front of you. Trooper ‘Smiles’ and Trooper Belhamun are consoling an incensed Trooper Caroline Schuster clutching the left side of her face. The burnt, and now bloody, side.

”Well no one told me it were it’s fekkin Da, now did they?”

10 feet away Hirstun of Ligh and all three of his old Huscarl buddies are physically restraining the snarling white-maned Grenn.

A bundle of what looks like a dozen or so wolf pelts lies in a pile between them. One of them looks familiar to you.

Readying an officer’s bellow that would put many an NCO to shame you shout…

---------------------------------

>”CPL Hirstun! Just what the FEK is going on here?” Get the full story THEN dish out punishment.

>”Trooper Schuster! Trooper Untergrenn! Front and centre!” Punishment first, the story doesn’t matter.

>”Trooper Schuster, Explain yourself!” You’ve served with Schuster. You remember a cheeky Trooper not prone more to bad jokes than picking fights.

>”Trooper Untergrenn, Come here!” The Grenn will have the most trouble getting his story heard.

> Ask the Troopers if they would rather receive punishment, or if they might be willing to help you with some things you're trying to catch up on after your promotion, something that you normally wouldn't offer as an alternative but it could give them a chance to not only actually help you instead and earn back some good will, instead of pissing you off more making you spend time punishing them, but they could try to work together and get a better feel for how to get along with each other.

> Both options are paperwork, but choosing the punishment deal means hateful pointless paperwork with you doing the actual paperwork in the same room while being very angry at them for doing something to get punishment detail, not being a bro and helping you out when you went out of your way to give them an opportunity, and for making you have to spend time in a room supervising their punishment detail while angry at them and having to do paperwork, which makes you angrier at them just for existing. Oh, and White Bitch is going to be there, and no she isn't any less of a Bitch when she's gotten laid it turns out. And she's in there doing paperwork already, so they can have her sparkling disposition to enjoy while you go take care issues that are more urgent, but not dearer to your heart then eventually coming back to relieve White Bitch of their company and her paperwork, and ensuring that no matter how bad their time with her is it is going to be so much worse when you get there that they won't even be able to compare. And you will be interested to find out if they are even capable of conceiving something worse than their time with White Bitch.

> Choosing the "Volunteer" option gets them orders to go and assist your current aid, you got a girl to help you out with the paperwork because Kid has kept his nose clean and not caused you problems and you've gotten him training to be a field medic with some cute daughters of your new Doctor, something to consider regarding the rewards of virtue, so they'll help her however they can until you can get back and if she gives a good accounting of their help that will be the end of the matter, and you will think a little bit more highly of them.

> Do not tell them that the Girl you got to help you with paperwork is actually White Bitch if they volunteer.

> They have to agree on the choice for the both of them, and the have until you run out of patience in which case it will be punishment detail every goddamn day until you stop being mad and they better hope by the Dark Father it doesn't start to amuse you instead.

Heck, we could even tell him that we're keeping it for him. That we're part of a caste called the Blackguards, and if he can prove himself worthy of joining their ranks than they have the privilege to duel each other for honour or trophys.

And if he ever thinks he's fucking hard enough to come at you, you'll leave an open invitation to duel you for the skin.

Until then, you're going to keep it and wear it and care for it, same as you are going to keep, employ, and care for the Grenn as one of your troopers.

”CPL Hirstun! Just what the FEK is going on here?”

Your voice would thunder across the courtyard even without it being amplified by the Cloak of Command. Everyone pauses in their complaint or struggle to stare at you.

Hirstun of Ligh is the first to recover.

"Sir! My men and I were undergoing standard training routine with Trooper Untergrenn here. Trooper Schuster entered the plaza carrying what I beleive to be pelts taken from the Grenn we killed last night. Trooper Untergrenn approached the Schuster in a hostile manner, attacking her and wounding her face. We restrained the Trooper but both refused to leave until the pelts were handed over to them. Then you arrived. Sir."

You nod, satisfied with the Corporal's explanation. You turn to the two concerned Troopers for their say.

"Boss, these Grenn were the fekking enemy! They killed bloody Pietre Verdun and they don't deserve nothing but whatever we says they deserves." Trooper Schuster's face is a clawed mess, but at least it's the burned portion that was clawed. Damage already done and all that. She looks ever so slightly afraid of you. "Don't see why we can't make no trophies. Did when we faced the Wild didn't we? They don't deserve no proper rites like Auntie or Pietre..."

[1/2]
>>
>>947594
I don't think the issue is about honor or trophies, but about "you skinned by dad and are literally gonna wear him as a cloak"
>>
>>947602
Trooper Untergrenn on the other hand shows no fear. It's understandable, less than two days ago he must have beleived himself to be a dead-Grenn-walking. Any day beyond that is a bonus. From the incline of his canine head his growl is clearly directed at Schuster, not you.

"Is Siro Allgrenn. Is Pack. Negen Hekendubunda Sars Pack. Sutten Felden Negen Whora Sars Pack Hekenhat."

"My Father Allgrenn. My People. I would not dishonour my Spirit Pack. Southern Man Must Not Wear Skin of Pack Fallen."

You don't have any love for the Grenn. Even if you didn't have a history of hating them and dogs in general, they killed some of your people the other night. So by all means treating the dead like is of little concern to you. Attacking a fellow comrade over your -old- side being mistreated is not fekking on. You're not inclined to side with the dog anyway.

On the other hand, Trooper Schuster did skin and wear Untergrenn's fekking father. That's a step above cultural insensitivity. And Trooper Schuster probably -did- know one of them had to be the Grenn's sire, she was there when Hirstun explained it's oath to you. Maybe she was trying to goad him, or maybe she was minding her own business and trying to make a quick Gelt on premium furs. On top of that, Untergrenn isn't that far above a literal anyway. How else was he going to react to that other than attack?

Honour for the Company and our Command, Honour for the Alpha with us protecting the hide and respecting. gives the Grenn incentive to integrate into the company so he can become a Blackguard while adding more value to the skin by making him have to earn it back from you in a way that binds him tighter to the company instead of making him suffer/tolerate it until he can get the skin back.

Also puts us in the position of a leader and teacher, a position of respect to aim for being able to approach us as an equal. Sort of a father figure, almost.

Prince gets Allgrenn's pelt.

>>
>>947606

> Punish both. Both have acted unacceptably here and need to face the consequences. [Courage]

You know I'm about paperwork.

>>Deal with the pelts some other way [how?]

Ask the Grenn what an acceptable trophy would be, one that doesn't dishonour his father, but doesn't keep honour from the Black Company.

The Grenn doesn't count as a trophy, because he's part of the Black Company now.

Ask him how he expects his new pack to be compensated for the lives lost. People you cared about died, including the heart and soul of the Black Company, a woman who was like a loving aunt to every single man and women here.

I dunno, maybe the southern Man can't wear the skin of the fallen. But maybe you could be the exception as his new "Pack Leader", and he could see it as you trying your best to continue his memory instead of dishonouring it, while allowing the Company to take honour in defeating a strong foe as payment for the lives lost. Or you could maybe join the Spirit Pack, both to preserve his connection to it somewhat and to help be a bridge between his old pack and his new "pack".

The remaining skins he can be allowed to dispose of as per their customs, but he will have to do so as an act cutting the final ties between his old pack and creating ties with his new one and that the first act of his new Pack will be the gifting of those hides. He doesn't have to shame his old Spirit Pack, but he can't shame his new one either.

Schuster can enjoy the knowledge that you will personally set aside some of your loot and pay as well as some of the Grenns to pay for funeral expenses and whatnot for the people you lost in exchange for the skins.
>>
>>947606
>Punish Untergrenn. The damn dogman has stepped WAY out of line resorting to violence. [Elite]

>Untergrenn

Attacking a Company sister? Not okay. But give him his fucking father's skin back.
>>
>>947624
>ask the grenn
Stopped reading there.
An officer doesn't ASK his subordinates for anything.
>>
>>947611
> Getting to reclaim the honour of your father who fell in combat against your new pack leader, by proving yourself to have become strong enough to be worthy of it.

>>947617

The Grenn has to make a break with his old pack, but he has to make ties with his new one as well, so we can't be too oppressive. Don't want to shame him into committing suicide by attacking us, especially given the outcome of our recent duel since he's technically now a member of the Company.
>>
>>947606
>>947626
To go along with this, while we shouldn't punish Schuster per se, I think we should make it known that parading the skins of the family of your new Company brother is not okay. And if it happens again then the punishment happens.
>>
>>947606
> Punish both. Both have acted unacceptably here and need to face the consequences. [Courage]
>Deal with the pelts some other way [how?]
Take all the furs to be given out to the black guard.
They can answer some of our questions about our blood for his, Schuster should of known it was a bad idea but she stil gets no offical punishment, and blackguard could probably take the dog in a fight if he gets pissy about them wearing his skin.
Plus after snake currying some favor with them might not be a bad idea.
>>
>>947627
Probably should have kept reading, giving that he's asking for options and not begging for a favor.

>>

*join the blackguard... whoops
>>
>>947624
Schuster didn't do anything wrong. We're mercenaries. She's supposed to want to make a quick buck.
>>
>>947627
A good officer asks his subordinates to clarify things and provide him with necessary information to come to a decision.

The Grenn has to be willing to let the Company gets its due for the blood it spilt, either in loot and actually preferably in loot, but Honour and Reputation is important to us just as it is to him. Gives us a common ground to connect on.

Schuster doesn't get punished for the pelt thing, although he does for fighting, and we make it known that he was partially responsible for funding the costs of funerals - whether we conivnce the Grenn to let us sell the pelts, or if we eat the cost of them with him - another bonding experience.

>>947626
I would prefer to punish them both together, simply to try and get them used to working together outside of a life or death situation where "friendly stabs" are a concern. Punishing them together, the Grenn for attacking Schuster and Schuster for for being indiscreet with the remains of relatives of a fellow company member.

As an aside, hopefully by playing up "unity and brotherhood in the Company" we can get Bad Hand to chill the fuck out a bit.
>>
>>947633
>And what shitty officers have you worked for that never ask their subordinates questions?

To be fair, that was pretty much my experience in the Army.
>>
>>947642

>>
>>947633
The point is you're there in an official capacity. You're second in command under kuveria, Asking a bottom ranked trooper's opinion in front of the other rank and file diminishes the chain of command. You can do this stuff in the back channels but not on the clock per se
>>
>>947606
>>947632

I could back this so long as the Grenn gets his Dads pelt and we decline to wear one ourselves, and tell the Grenn that he had to learn the ways of honouring the fallen among his new pack and this is one of them. A show of respect and a way to remember.
>>
>>947632
I could get behind this.

>>947639
Schuster did two things wrong. She tried to make a quick buck off the corpses of a fellow Company members family, and she got caught doing it. You can argue about which was the worse crime.

Besides, our job isn't to do just what's best for Schuster, but what's best for the Company.
>>
In general I'm understanding that

(1)
>Untergrenn is punished, but we have a very sharp word to Schuster about skinning and wearing the blood-relatives of fellow comrades.

(2)
>Untergrenn gets his father's pelt but the rest are Schuster's.
OR
>We ask Untergrenn whether he wants to fight us for the pelts. (Or is it just his father's pelt?)

If I could get a bit of clarification on (2) that'd be swell.

>>947642
To clarify, the NCOs were the middleman and the officer of course consulted them. But us grunts didn't really come into it.
>>
>>947645
Use the black tongue, nobody else will have any idea what we're saying.

Alternatively, you'll note from what I wrote that what we're doing is giving him a chance to provide us with an acceptable option, not giving him the right to choose what we do.

It's a little bit different because he's not just another "bottom ranked trooper" but he's some weird combination of loot, foreigner, and trooper. Especially given that as a Grenn he'll have unique skills we'll want to develop.

It's also a way to get him to make a public gesture of leaving behind his old pack and accepting his new one, instead of being a strange monster we keep around for reasons nobody knows, and they think we're either mad, reckless, or just an asshole for keeping something that could attack them at any time around.

We made this mess by bringing him in, we have to fix it so that he integrates into the company.

>>947642
Interesting. Was hating officers while sharing punishments a bonding experience for you?
>>
>>947649
That said, even if you do acknowledge Schuster did something wrong, wouldn't it be odd to see the Company get a freebie for Schuster's personal efforts? There's no law against individual endeavour in the Company.

It's not illogical as a means of punishment, but it's definitely a sort of punishment right?
>>
>>947651
Whomp whomp, no punishment by paperwork.

Could we do Untergrenn gets his fathers pelts, but the proceeds from selling the rest go first to paying for the people lost fighting against the Grenn and then Schuster gets the rest, or a ""finders fee" or whatever?

Could we at least ask the Grenn (in the black tongue if people are concerned about our reputation) what he would normally do with them, just out of curiousity?
>>
>>947645
We're not asking his opinion. We know his opinions (Grr kill sacrilege) and we don't care. We're asking for options to treat his family's remains in a way that won't have him eating another trooper. And he should definitely know that we're no fan of Grenn and if we don't like them he can go screw, so he had better make some alternatives.
>>
>>947655
Schuster should definitely get a finders fee or the major share of any profits from the furs, but given that Schuster wasn't the only one to fight and bleed for those skins he's not entitled to the entire profit or decision on what to do with them just because he was the one who picked them up. Especially since he made a big public thing about it.

Unless we got some other large amount of loot?
>>
>>947651
> Untergrenn gets his father's pelt but the rest are Schuster's.

Ah. I figured the O's in the Army would be more into that kinda thing, what with the whole "here's your platoon try not to get them killed" job training they get.
>>
>>947652
I don't understand what the public gesture is here.

-Allowing Schuster to skin his old Pack?
-Allowing you to wear his Father's pelt?
-Something else?

As a comparison, imagine we CPL 'Jack' Marcus had signed up and we were asking him to desecrate the bodies of his comrades from his old unit. Sure the noble-born were fekwits but the rest would be a touchy subject.

I don't know how you mean to handle this.

>>947658
>people lost fighting against the Grenn

This is already covered out of the Company itself. As a Lt you don't really have to worry about the life insurance or wills of the deceased unless they're out of the ordinary.

>Grenn rites
Normally they leave their dead out in the wild, or in very shallow graves. That way they return to the earth sooner and join the Star Pack as they chase Mother Moon.

But with the increase in the undead, burning is also now very popular.
>>
>>947649

>>
>>947651
I feel honestly we don't really have a good idea of what would be offensive or why, and that makes me feel uncomfortable about just making a decision since we are kind of personally responsible for bringing the Grenn in.

It just feels stupid to make a decision without understanding our options when all it takes is another question.

Also, you yourself wrote that Schuster didn't do it for money.

He did it for revenge, to take trophies to honour those we lost.

And I want the Grenn to agree to giving us that honour, to understand that it's also his honour now, and the public gesture to be something that shows the other troopers that he mourns with us, not separately for his pack. Not because he knew the people we lost, but because he's now one of us and our pain is his pain.

And then we reciprocate that by allowing him to honour his pack one last time before leaving them behind forever.

We need the other troopers to trust him and vice versa.

Trooper Caroline Schuster is a she. A fairly rural and horrifically scarred but still with the entire package.

And revenge is certainly a part of it. So is 'accidentally' passing through the courtyard where Untergrenn was training. But making a bit of coin is factor as well, otherwise what's the point?

As for Untergrenn's stance, I can see you rolling that way but it's going to be a bitter fekking pill all the same. Of course you could twist his arm because you pretty much own him by killing his sire according to the customs of his people.
>>
>>947687
Huh. Never thought about that actually. I mean, the Grenn do seem the type to take trophies themselves.

>>947684
Word of god on Grenn trophy taking and if they would have had something better than the skins the Grenn could give us?

Do you think we should maybe give him a name? Let Schuster choose his name as punishment for clawing his face?
>>
>>947689
Please don't do what he's suggesting. Though I'm not sure what it is exactly given the rambling nature of all his posts,

>>947691
It's like you're intent on finding ways to insult him even more.
>>
>>947692
Depends on how we go about it. So long as we remind Caroline that the Grenn is a member of the Company now and that they'll probably have to fight together at some point so this is as much us giving her some responsibility as it is us giving her some restitution from the Grenn I think it would be reasonable.
>>
>>947686
I did, or the officer did?

I guess I did fall for it if you mean I signed up because of advertising and "hurr durr diggers are best" mentality. Should have gone Cav for sure.
>>
>>947689
Well he's going to have to move on and accept his new pack. Those were his rules we played by when he asked us to take him in, he can't insist on refusing to play by our rules after we did.

I would just like to offer him a chance to participate willingly in this whole thing instead of us having to force him. I don't think we have time to deal him refusing us at every step because it's different from his old pack.

Honestly I'd rather just kill him like we did Snake then have him resent us and the troopers and be a liability instead of an Ally.

CPL Hirstun of Ligh is something of a legend on the Northern Coast, where both trade and war with the Grenn are frequent. He has extensive knowledge on these matters.

Good steel is seen as the best trophy. As is taking the young of the enemy. Unsurprisingly defeated human cubs rarely seem to survive the harsh semi-nomadic conditions of Grenn life. It's not unheard of, but mostly dismissed as legend and good storytelling.

Sometime they do take trophies in the form of ears or bones. But a harsh winter will result in them breaking down even that for food. Flaying enemies rather then devouring them wholesale is unheard of. Grenn also don't torture, but that's because they don't play with their food.
>>
>>947709
Oh yeah, let's ask our CPL for advice.
>>

As I understand it the general consensus is.

>(1) Punish Untergrenn. Schuster may have been a dick and you will reprimand her, but the Grenn was way out of line resorting to violence.
> (2) Untergrenn may receive his father's pelt and treat it according to his people's customs. But the rest are the enemy and Schuster can sell them. You will take several of them, one for yourself and the other as some sort of badge of office? I'm unclear whether that means for the NCOs or the Blackguards, I'll say you take 4-5 anyway. That leaves her with 4-5.

And I meant to answer this >>947687 here >>947709.
>>
>>947709
>Sometime they do take trophies in the form of ears or bones.

Well shit. Why don't we take the ears as trophies and let Grenn have his father's body regardless, and tell him that if he can't produce something of value to replace the skins then he owes it to the Company to allow the skins to be claimed as loot.

We can even help him bury or do whatever to honour the rest of the remains.
>>
>>947716
Yes, good, write something please.
>>
>>947717
Dude, I'm just going to stop you right here for a moment.

You are literally suggesting that he cut the ears, bones, or some other trophy off the flayed corpses of his old pack so that he can compensate Schuster for the skins.

Now you CAN do this. But that isn't going to win Grenn hearts and minds by any means unless we're talking a total mindbreak via holyshit lows on the rolls.
>>
>>947716
Well, can we do >>947714 and ask our CPL his opinion since he has experience with the Grenn?

Or if you're sick of this and are going move on then I think it would be sell the ones we take and use the money to pay for a wake for the people who died and to help the guys who got crippled. If I recall, one dude who lost a leg also has a brother with the company as well.
>>
>>947716
Agreed. Badges of office for our SGT and CPLs. A peace offering for Bad Hand?

Probably not enough for all the Blackguards in the platoon.
>>
>>947721
Well, if it's something the Grenn themselves claim as trophies then it should be fine. I'm not saying make the Grenn do it himself.

And as for compensating Schuster for the skins, I'm saying that if he can lead us to a stash or give something to replace the value of the skins then that's an option, but if not then the Companies needs come first. Let him know that if he can give us another option we'll take it, but right now there isn't one.
>>
>>947724
Would Bad Hand appreciate a peace offering like that though? He's apparently surprisingly touchy about the concept of Brotherhood in the Company, and mind find it distasteful to wear something like that.

Just a suggestion, but since people post fast maybe for more complicated votes like this it could be broken down a bit? On this Bad Hand would be 100% on board with... pretty much all your posts. The Company comes first in everything, he would have no concern for the funeral rites of the fallen Grenn, even the father. Because that was before they were Company Brothers, now it's different.

>>947722
>>947714
Honestly you pretty much hit solid ground here. Hirstun wouldn't have weighed in much on the treatment of the rest of the pack and Company profit versus Grenn funeral rites. But he would -definitely- have stressed letting Untergrenn at least handle Allgrenn's remains.

----------------------------------

Dice Roll of 3 1d100.
Due to your fairly brutal discplinary action last night, there will be no risk of outright insubordination. Instead you're looking at all round personal approval. Since you've come down -slightly- on the Schuster and Company point of view it will be easier to earn their approval of your handling of it.

>DC 60 [Medium]

0 = They still hate each other. This situation is merely suppressed for another day.
1 = The Company thinks you handled it well enough. Untergrenn still harbours feelings of resentment.
2 = No one is -truly- happy. Which means you handled the compromise perfectly.
3 = No one can really fault your handling of the incident. Both Untergrenn and Schuster are personally more loyal to you.

>3 Success!
>Trooper Schuster and Trooper Untergrenn are both more loyal to you (even if they still dislike one another).
>You may represent this by selecting their newfound nicknames.

”Trooper Untergrenn. You have struck a fellow Sister of the Company. For that you will be punished. Your squad Corporal Hirstun will carry out the sentence, 10 lashes.” The wolfman manages to stifle his Grenn and look at the floor, refusing to meet your eyes. According to Hirstun, that is a sign of submission. ”Trooper Schuster will hand over Allgrenn’s remains, you may deal with them according to the rites and customs of your people. If you need an assistance or witness or some sort, I volunteer to act in that capacity.”

You repeat the words in common for the benefit of the others. The Corporal of the Huscarls nods approvingly as Schuster begrudgingly hands over the magnificent black pelt of Allgrenn. Untergrenn’s tail wags ever so slightly.

”Trooper Caroline Schuster. We lost good people to these Grenn that night, so I understand your anger. Nor will I stop our Brothers and Sisters in Black from trying to make some coin. You came to this courtyard with those skins with the intention of goading Trooper Untergrenn, so no monetary compensation for the wound other than costs of treat will be docked from their pay. Additionally, you failed to adhere to the Rule of Quarters. Half of your stock is forfeit, to be distributed as I see fit.”

Trooper Caroline Schuster scowls for a moment then cracks into a leering grin, the burnt (and now clawed) portion of her face crinkling horrifically. ”Meh, least I still got my good looks though. Eh, boss?”

You don't know whether it's due to nervousness, relief or genuine amusement but every member of the Company present in the courtyard laughs aloud.

This is exactly the kind of situation where nicknames are formed. You suspect it might catch for one or both of Troopers involved. Such a thing occurs naturally in the ranks of course, not designated by an officer. It ends up being…

It did, a blanket vote would have likely have been [Hard] (or worse depending on the other options selected).

Legless Jenny isn't technically part of the Company. Nor is the Doc. Strictly speaking Bad Hand would be 100% supportive crazy uncle for Kid, but less concerned with the other two.

CPL 'White Bitch' Tara's advice was to let him stew for a bit. The pelt may indeed make a good ice-breaker itself.

The Company, like any mercenary unit of any substance, has a plethora of hangers-on, whores, wives, washerwomen, clerks, crofters and more that pretty live alongside you and camp with you but aren't actually in 'the book'.

>'Pelt' for Untergrenn.
>And an even split between 'Joker' and the custom 'Beauty'
1 = Joker
2 = Beauty
-------------------------

At CPL Hirstun’s discretion the punishment is to be delayed until after Untergrenn has said his goodbyes. But the tension is mostly broken anyway. Trooper Nissar Belhamun’s attempts to console Untergrenn for his loss but his poor grasp on the common tongue, let alone Nort Spake has onlookers in stitches. The aging Trooper Crackfoot makes an awful joke comparing his foot to Schuster’s face. His comrade Godric ‘Golden’ smacks him on the back of the head a split-second before Schuster knees him in the balls. The plate holds, but he still goes down coughing and laughs are had all around.
You can’t help but smile as the men switch back to erstwhile camaraderie in a heartbeat, the presence of a superior officer momentarily forgotten.
”Sir, I found Mask!” Trooper Saint seems out of breath as she runs up behind you.

”Good work, Trooper. Where was- what’s wrong? You notice her look of conern ”Is he hurt? In danger?”

”Hurt? No, sir, doesn’t look like it. As for danger…” The hesitation in Trooper Saint’s expression is plain to see. ”I… I honestly don’t know, sir. He’s in the middle of the actor’s amphitheatre two streets over but it… he’s acting really odd, sir.”

"Trooper, I need more to go on than 'odd'."

"Sorry sir, but that's just it. He's walking around with a drawn blade, stopping and starting suddenly. I can't sense any overt magik on my wards to explain an illusion."

You stretch your neck looking up at the Kresden Actor’s Theatre. When you were in the orphanage they’d sometimes organise trips to witness the antics of actors and their stories. Like any sane child of less than a dozen summers you found them delightful. But those were simple scaffolds in courtyards or fields, easily substituted livestock exhibitions or gallows at moment’s notice. The play’s you saw never took place in anything like… this.

”The one in Sarsburg was twice.” Saint gives you a telling look as the two of you enter . She may be grateful you saved her from a painful end, but she clearly hasn’t forgotten where the blame for the destruction of the Greatest City in the World falls. Yes, it’s you.

”Also very flammable clearly.” You wince at Saint’s judgemental frown. ”Sorry. I’m sure it was amazing and the height of cultural achievement.”

I wouldn’t know.” Saint admits ruefully. ”I was always placed on sentry duty at the lower entrance when anyone of import was In attendance, which was always. I never did see a play myself.”

”Huh, really? If you could see one what would-“

”Shush! I mean, sorry sir, but here it is.” Trooper Saint says, bashful at her own reprimand. ”I tried calling to it, and resetting some of my wards, but to no effect.”

Just as she said, the Undead warrior clad in ornamental armour is upon the stage. When you first approach he is kneeling, head bowed. He looks up suddenly, in the opposite direction from you. He draws his sword in one fluid motion as he rises.

A strike against an unseen foe, a parry against an imaginary blow and then a final cut. He bows and sheathes his blade.

His form is beautiful, and no sound reaches you. Which isn’t odd since Mask was always a quiet one. But you didn’t even hear the swish of his blade.

”Lieutenant Prince, sir!” You raise an eyebrow at Saint’s hand on your arm. Such a gentle touch. She blushes furiously and withdraws it. ”Sorry, sir! It’s just… I never set foot on the stage itself when trying to contact him.”

”It’s magiked?”

”Maybe. Possibly. My wards detect nothing, but they were designed with Resistance and Defence in mind, not Detection.”

”And if it is magiked, what would happen if I stepped out there without wards?”

”… I have no idea sir.”

Judging from Mask’s movements, this doesn’t look like some bizarre practice. His movements against his imagined opponent are so constant, reactive and authentic that he clearly believes he is fighting to the death. Or second death at least… that or he is just very good at shadow-duelling.

You try everything, speaking in Black Tongue to throwing random objects at Mask. Saint threw a whole chair at him and it bounced off like it had hit a wall. Nothing seems to work. You could do something about this if someone like Page #137 was here. Below it that hostage mage may have come in handy after all. Otherwise Mask might be trapped like that forever.

Or you could step onto the Stage.

we still have a minor mage in our company to make use of. Also get our bodyguard and his magic sword here.
Make sure we got some checkup on the column approaching meanwhile, maybe a message to cpr jack or srg hands?
>>
>>947834
We have our runestone right, could we see if that reacts with him or something? Hitting him with a magic thing may do something different that hitting him with a chair.
>>
>>947834
Have a look around backstage for any theater-themed gimmickry that might be causing it.
Maybe try dropping the curtain?
>>

Get some axes in here and start cutting a way through the stage.

>thrown objects
Rope, objects and the like seem to repel off of him even as he moves. If they land anywhere on the stage they make no sound, but anywhere outside they impact with sound as normal.

>runestone
Oddly enough this is the only thing that -does- make a definitive sound when it patters off Mask. But now you'd have to walk on stage to get it.

>curtains
The curtains are designed to cover the front of the stage. You bring them down, but when you draw them back up you notice Mask is fighting more frantically than ever. As if the lack of light strengthened his imaginary opponent.

>collapse the stage
Saint gives you an odd look but obeys your order and slices clean through a few of the supporting stands for the stage. In complete defiance of physics it remains at the exact same height and shows no sign of strain.

>Belhamun and Cairsun
Saint points out the complete uselessness of a magik sword if even her blessed blade's dulled strength did not react with the supports.

As for Belhamun... his grasp on magik is really not on the level of the others mentioned. Maybe it's worth a shot though.

-----------------------------

(1) Try the Cairsun and Belhamun combo?

>Yes, what's the worst that could happen?
>No, walk onto the stage.
>>
>>947834
>>947839

Alternatively, Saint can still do wards and such, is there anything she could try directly on Mask to magically affect him, that wouldn't be too damaging?

Also, we should probably explore the area around the stage to see there are any equipment or props left behind that might be clues.

Can we get UNDER the stage?
>>
>>947850
If the lack of light strengthened his opponent, can we shine a really bright light at him to weaken it?
Where would we get a bright light though?
>>
>>947850
>As if the lack of light strengthened his imaginary opponent.

Hey, can we increase the light in the area then?

> Yes, what's the worst that could happen?

Well, lets see what suggestions they have before committing to any drastic actions.

I am less eager about crawling under the stage now that it has no supports.
>>
>>947850
>>947854
Seconding.
>>
>>947854
Our magicians should be able to handle a simple light spell, right?

>>947850

Masks fighting is kind of funky. It seems to start off formalized and less intense.

Maybe he will "reset" if we leave the theater and come back in? Let's ask Saint if his actions when we entered where the same for when she first came in and found him.
>>
>>947852
Saint's wards are inherently passive. It's why they still work despite her Fall. Her more offensive abilities are beyond her entirely now.

The actor's changeroom contains a panoply of colours, costumes and meaningless ribbons whose purpose escapes you. One thing of interest is the corpse of an actor. He's clearly been dead for a while, slit wrists in the changeroom. Beside him a heartfelt suicide note stating his love for the Emperor and the Empire and that, "if it must die and take the light of civilisation with it, so too must I."

All very dramatic, but this has none of the hallmarks of a typical haunting.

>>947854
>>947855
>can we increase the light
I don't know man, can you? I'm not a fekking physicist. I don't know how many bloody mirrors that would take. Probably more than you have.
>>
>>947859
Just get our mages to do it then.
>>
>>947859
>>947862

Fire is also always an option. I was thinking if they had mirrors set up or braziers and such for lighting.

> if it must die and take the light of civilisation with it, so too must I.

Damn. Do we have anyone with a noble upbringing or classical education around? I wonder if we have a case of possession.

Any Emperor costumes kicking about?
>>
>>947867
>>947862
>>947859

And yeah, mages are always an option. Especially if this one is as flammable as the last.

>light spell by Belhamun the novice mage

Excellent.

--------------------------

Trooper Belhamun, I want you to make light. Understand? Make. Light.” You gesture at your hand and then the daylight, hoping he gets the gist. ”And Knight-Taskmaster Cairsun? You’re on standby. Just in case.”

”Just in case…?” The fallen hero somehow manages to continue looking sad even as he appears bemused.

”Just in case -something- happens. That’s all I’ve got for you. Nissar, do you understand?”

”Na’am Emir-Lootenenant.” Trooper Belhamun nods enthusiastically with a broad smile. It seems that his grasp of your rank is getting more accurate everyday. ”Nissar make Da’aw, light.”

”Da’aw? That’s your word for light? Alright then.” You step back as Nissar’s raised hands start to glow a bright bluish colour.

Unfortunately, you had made a mistake. Da’aw did not mean light. Da’aw was the ex-slave’s attempt a pronunciation for the word ‘Door’.

So Trooper Nissar Belhamun, not two feet away from a potentially magiked stage, attempted to summon a Door. To his credit, the door was initially very small. A 'light' door, it could be said.

>>Yes, what's the worst that could happen?
Or at least seek their counsel, and they should be on hand if anything goes down.
>>
>>947871

Wow. So using the mage was a trap option huh.
>>
>>947871
How did he even get door from that?
>>
>>947871
I honestly thought we would get to roll for magic going horribly wrong, instead of having it just kind of happen.

Quick, lets knock out our mage and disrupt his spell that is clearly going wrong by making a door instead of a small light.

This will probably be the last thread before the New Year. One on the 29th is still possible, but a definite maybe. I know it seems like we didn't get a whole lot done but I'll Hopefully see you lads on the next (much more action entailed) thread.

I'm trying to pump out [2/2] but the chan keeps saying it's spam. Didn't realise my writing was that bad.

Hey, that will come back to bite you on its own. I don't need to pull any particular GM bullshit for that.

Nissar's misunderstanding is -partially- me wanting to avoid a 'Who dunnit?' investigation of Mask's condition. I've already played 20 questions today, so sue me. It's justifiable in universe, and you did ask for it.

[2/3]

[i]”Sir! I think the stage’s aura is growing! I can’t hear the-“[/i] You turn to see Saint shouting at you eyes wide. Or at least, her mouth is moving as if she should be shouting. But you cant hear a damned thing.

[i]”Damn.”[/i] You curse as you take a step back. But you don’t hear yourself say it. Then a flash from Nissar’s hands blinds you for a moment and you can’t see worth shit either.

[/b][/green]

You have no idea where you are. And, like most dreams, you can’t remember how you got there. You know it’s a dream, even if the pinching and holding your breath doesn’t wake you up. For one thing the fort on the hill looks [green]off. Wrong even. No one build’s a fort that looks like that.[/green]

And these trees. You’ve marched from one end of the continent to the other and –never- seen a true with leaves that colour. [green]Beautiful,[/green] you think. But you didn’t come here for sightseeing, and the sounds coming from the fort remind you of your ugly place in an ugly world.

Behind you the bewildered trio of your subordinates look around in shock. Belhamun babbles in his native tongue, apologising or explaining you can’t tell. Saint is staring in awe at a gorgeous feathered creature, some sort of bird. It’s ornamental feathers are simply dazzling. All you can think of is how easy a time a predator would have catching it.

Only Cairsun the Morning Light seems to recognise anything. He can’t take his eyes off the falling pink leaves of the tree in front of you. [i]”Impossible…[/i] He murmurs again and again .
Saint finally regains her wits, and frowns at you. [i]”Where are we? What is this place? And what is that noise?”[/i]

Despite how much you [b]hate[/b] magik you find yourself grinning. There’s a number of noises, but one carries out to the bridge in particular.

[i]”Where? Fekked if I know. What? Any soldier knows that this right here is a fort. Even if it is funny looking. And the noise? I’d know that sound anywhere, Saint. That…”[/i]
