You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, a powerful shinigami who's taken the time to visit the high school class where not only your living nephew and his friends are, but an exiled former Captain as well. It seems that Hirako Shinji has run into a situation he and his fellow Vizards are having trouble with, and so they likely came to Ichigo for help after having taken him in to help him learn more about hollowfication... for what good it did.

And in doing so he just happened to find you as well, come to check on Ichigo.

Sado stares intently at the open book on his desk as the other students chat, pretending not to know you're here. The other two young friends of his and the loud lesbian seem to take similar measures.

“It's not good to see you here,” Ichigo protests quietly... well quietly for him at least. “Every time you show up at my school it means something bad either has happened, is happening, or is gonna happen soon. So which is it?”

“That's not nice, Kurosaki-kun,” Inoue reprimands your nephew in a tone that makes you want to claw your ears out with your fingernails for some reason. “You should be more respectful towards your aunt.”

“Actually, I'm glad you're here for once,” Shinji admits in a low voice. “Something's come up.”

“And what is that?”

He glances around cautiously before leaning in to speak in a whisper. “Lisa's gone missing. I want you to help us find her.”

Lisa, is it? You have to admit you wouldn't stick your neck out for all of the Vizards: you're not totally sure that you've forgiven Mashiro for infecting you all those years ago, Rose is a bit of an arrogant prick, and if someone had done something to Kensei you'd track them down just so that you could shake their hand. But the few times since the incident where you've spoken with her Lisa's always given you a fair chance, which is more than most in the Seireitei were willing to do at first. You also remember that as a Lieutenant she was one of the more respectable ones... unlike Hiyori who was, is, and probably always will be a pain in the ass.

“Okay then,” you nod calmly, replying in a low voice. “But not here, I'd have too much cleanup if anyone overheard us. Follow me, ten seconds behind.”

With those instructions you leave the room, walking out into the hall and down a flight of stairs to the back doors of the school's main building. It's just outside, where no students are currently supposed to be, that you have Shinji explain what he knows.

“When did you last see her?”

“She was supposed ta call in after her mission,” Shinji begins to tell you the details of the situation. “That was fourteen hours ago.”

“So about six last night,” you muse, doing the math in your head. “What was this mission of hers?”

“There are old barriers throughout Japan, usually at shrines. Sometimes we get calls from humans about somethin' being wrong at one of 'em, so we send someone to investigate. Make sure the barriers are stable, you know?”

“So which shrine was Lisa sent to?”

Shinji sighs, rubbing the back of his head. “Bodai-ji, actually. In Aomori. Got a call after the festival this July but didn't think much about it, then we got another call two days ago.”

Bodai-ji? The one that Japanese buddhists treat as the entrance to purgatory, where every year or so a bunch of old blind women get together and claim to channel the spirits of the recently departed? That can't be good, why would they send a Lieutenant there alone?

“What sort of incident are we talking about?”

“A blind seer died during the festival,” Shinji recounts. “Then just recently a priest went missing.”

“Any chance he was just floating face-down in the lake?” you ask hopefully.

Shinji shakes his head. “Lisa's first report said she didn't find anything right off.”

Rope in Hachi and Tessai. If it's shrines and barriers, two former Kidou Corps officers plus your expertise should be more than enough.

Besides, Tessai's easier to strong-arm relatively speaking.

“I'll go to the temple and investigate,” you tell Shinji, who opens his mouth to protest. “I'll let you know if I need backup, but given where you sent Lisa... alone mind you... this might get a little weird.”

“What do you mean weird?” Ichigo asks, frowning as he tries to puzzle the statement out.

You shrug. “Osorezan is important to Japanese Buddhism as an entrance to the afterlife... and not a nice part of the afterlife like the Soul Society. More like what you'd imagine if I told you it looked like Hell.”

“You don't think...” Shinji narrows his eyes at you.

“No, I don't,” you interrupt. “Shinigami aren't allowed to meddle with the affairs of Hell, but I'd struggle to find a reason Hell would want to interfere with a shinigami.”

“And why's that?” Ichigo asks.

“Because it's never happened before. I'd have nothing to base the hypothetical on.”

You excuse yourself from the school entirely, retracing your steps to the Inari shrine you first arrived at. After passing through the handful of vermilion-painted torii along the approach, you glance around the shrine's grounds to make sure that you're alone. Then you let yourself into the main shrine, taking off your shoes and padding quietly across the tatami to the center of the room. There you seat yourself quietly.

“You can show yourself at any time,” you announce into the empty room, feeling that you're not alone. Sure enough someone steps out of the shadowy corner of the hall, walking so smoothly and quietly she seems to glide across the floor rather than stepping.

Inari seats herself before you amid a radiating sea of golden tails.

“I see you have concluded your business?” Inari speaks to you, her tone very businesslike to the point of coming off as lifeless. “I desire to speak with you in confidence, there has been an... incident.”

“Did this incident perhaps involve a certain exiled shinigami?” you ask, sensing a connection if for no other reason than the timing.

“Indeed. I suppose you are by now aware of where this shinigami went missing?”

“In Osorezan,” you confirm. “What's happened there?”

“I cannot say for certain,” Inari admits quietly. “However what we can say is that the Kushanāda, the guardians of Hell, have never been so agitated.”

“So you can come here when the guardians of hell are throwing a fit,” you playfully accuse her, “but you can't be bothered to call for my anniversary? Thanks, mom.”

Surprisingly, you see a faint twinkle in Inari's eyes and a smile creeps across her face. “Take care, Captain. You are beginning to remind me of my daughter.”

Tenkotsuki feels warm somewhere in your mind, but chooses not to speak.

“I need to know more about Hell before I can commit to anything,” you admit, changing the subject to focus back on the business at hand. “Shinigami lore on the subject is pretty spare with the details.”

“It has five distinct levels,” Inari explains, starting with the basics, “each with a different character. The whole thing has always struck me as rather like the Inferno. I have only ever had cause to view the first among them however, as doing so is something of a problem for full-divinities.”

“Will that be a problem for me?” you ask, to which Inari shakes her head.

“I do not believe so. We deities must seek permission in advance to enter Hell, however a shinigami sent as a messenger is protected under certain ancient agreements between the realms of existence. Announce your intent to the Kushanāda and they should leave you in peace.”

“What are these guardians like?” you ask, contemplating the possibility that Hell's natives might not take kindly to your presence. “How will I know them when I see them?”

At this Inari laughs softly to herself. “They are difficult to miss, Captain. You will know them the moment you see them, and you will see them the moment you arrive. More likely your difficulties will come from the other denizens of Hell, the Togabito.”

“Sinners?”

Inari nods. “Sinners. Those whose crimes in life warrant damnation are rarely of the sort to welcome outsiders, though in time even the most hardened criminal who finds themselves in Hell will be broken by the experience.”

“Any centralized organization I should be worried about?”

“None that I know of,” Inari shakes her head. “If you would not mind allowing your zanpakuto to manifest briefly? I have a desire to speak with my daughter.”

Tenkotsuki appears at your side, looking curiously at her mother. “Yes?”

“I desire to speak with you in private,” Inari gently insists. Tenkotsuki glances back at you, seemingly uncertain of how to respond.

“My personal feelings on the subject aside,” you sigh, “I'll step out.”

As she watches you leave Inari makes eye contact, offering you a bow almost too subtle to be noticed, and you step outside. The evergreens sigh on the breeze, still warm enough that the trees here aren't starting to turn yet, and you wait quietly outside the main shrine while the two deific forces within speak in private. You briefly shut your eyes and continue to wait patiently.

“Excuse me, miss,” one of the custodians of the shrine announces his presence, prompting you to open your eyes again. “I'm not sure you should be here.”

“I'm from the head shrine in Kyoto,” you quickly lie. “Sorry I didn't announce myself.”

“Ah,” the older gentleman nods thoughtfully. “From Inariyama, I see. How are things there?”

“Fine,” you shrug dismissively. “The Keihan line had some issues last week, made it difficult to get to work in the morning. My apartment is over near Kyodai.”

“Well then, please take care while on the grounds,” he nods, continuing to walk past you. If only he knew of the meeting within the walls of the shrine he tends to... you're almost tempted to point him in that direction yourself.

Finally, Tenkotsuki rejoins you by de-manifesting herself. “Very well, my dear Riku. We may go at your leisure.”

Are you retarded?
Our technique is flawless.
Our zanjutsu, hakuda, kido and hollow abilitues are as high as is possible for a soul reaper.
We are seekimg out divine power because theres no other way to advance anymore.
We got hurt by Tats because we were deliberatly fighting at her level, pulling punches and leaving holes in our defences we never would otherwise.
We debated this recently and decided it would be more usefull to train others and advance them greatly than to slightly advance our already obscene power.
We have peaked and are working to break that power cieling. In no way have we gotten rusty or sloppy.

“We'll head straight for Osorezan from here,” you announce quietly, drawing your denreishinki. You quietly type out two messages: one to your own Division to let them know to remain on alert, and the other to Kisuke requesting a special focused sweep of the Osorezan area.

Then you tear a hole in the universe, stepping out briefly into the grounds of the Kuchiki manor and then opening their private Senkaimon to reach Osorezan. It only takes a few moments to complete the procedure, and the house's guards are none the wiser.

The mountain itself greets you foremost with an acrid, sulfuric smell which accompanies the steamy, foggy view across a wide, flat lake. Vividly colored silts stain the lower walls of the caldera as rivulets and streams wash them down the slopes, collecting in pools and expansive flats of bubbling, hissing mud. Gas, carrying a tangy, chemical scent with it, escapes from great rends in the tortured earth... you can tell why the early Japanese Buddhists might have assumed some connection with the underworld existed at this spot. Though the upper slopes are still covered in trees, the deeper you get the more Hellish the terrain grows.

You cross a low arcing bridge over a small river, of which your understanding is that it represents the Sanzu river... and when you do, you're stuck by a strange sensation of being out of place.

“Tenkotsuki, please get us out of this gigai,” you insist quietly. “Something is interfering with my senses.”

“Yes, I noticed something amiss as well,” your zanpakuto agrees, eliminating your physical body in a burst of brightly-colored leaves that scatter across the river and disintegrate. “Oh my, this is quite unusual. I have never felt reiatsu quite like this.”

The entire area around Mount Osore feels strangely unnatural, unwelcoming, as if the monks who first declared this site to be sacred might have been onto something. Though the warped appearance of the place may be geological rather than the work of some malign will, to an even mildly spiritually-aware human sensing the reiatsu here must have been a deeply disturbing experience.

What you don't sense unfortunately is Lisa's reiatsu.

Instead of making Tenkotsuki put you back into a gigai only to take the gigai right back off a few minutes from now, you elect to wander around the exterior of the shrine in your normal shinigami form. It's difficult to sense anything in this place, as the strange reiatsu is pervasive no matter where you wander. The light breeze blows past dozens of little pinwheels left out amid the field of stones and grave markers, memorials to countless lost souls. They're rarer these days: people leave them when they lose a baby in or shortly after childbirth, and with no tourists or visitors about at the moment all that's left is the eerie sound of their spinning against the background of distant bubbling mudpots.

It's on the short of the caldera lake that you abruptly discover the reason for Lisa's disappearance. One moment you're in an admittedly creepy place in the living world, and the next you're not.

“Riku!” Tenkotsuki alerts you, alarm creeping into her voice. “It appears we have unwittingly strayed from the Living World... no doubt this is exactly the sort of problem your Lieutenant friend encountered, she would have stood no chance. Spatial fractures crossing two dimensions... I had not even considered such a thing possible, let alone thought to look for them.”

So that means that this is Hell? Were it not for the profoundly twisted reiatsu here you might be forgiven for failing to realize it. Before you is an expanse of white cubes and rectangular towers stretching into the distance, divided into lanes by blue pathways of some sort far below. All over these are humanoid figures in featureless black robes, each of varied shapes and sizes but all bearing the same rounded, plain mask. Here and there you also see towering figures like giants striding amid the blocks, themselves masked with fierce skull-like features and bearing what appear to be pieces of armor. Their low, stooped postures are initially deceptive, as each is also powerfully muscled. To underestimate one of these guardians of Hell would be a mistake.

One of the many sinners approaches you swiftly, landing on the same cube you've found yourself standing on.

“It seems we've caught the locals' attention,” Rosa grumbles. “If it's a fight he wants I say we give it to him.”

“Why bother,” you grumble, “he's a small fry.”

“Hey, who do you think you're calling a small fry!?” the being demands angrily, firing five green blurs at you from where its sleeves would be, were its body not essentially already a black mass of shadowy reishi.

Within a splintered second ten long streaks of blood appear to your side with a chorus of splattering sounds. You turn to glare at the Togabito, little more than a nuisance to you but quite effective in that role if it was his intent. He glances down at Tenkotsuki, still drawn and in your hand.

“What the fu...” he begins, interrupted by his own mouth as his head and neck slowly peel apart into two fleshy halves. The nearest guardian turns where it stands and begins to slowly approach you. Ah, so you attracted its attention. Good.

“Not nice, lady!” the Togabito shouts at you as the slice begins to heal, like a zipper running up from the top of his sternum. “Really not cool... hey, what's that guy doing? You attracted a guardian you dumb...”

For the second time in a painfully short period the nameless being is cut off by his own death, or at least what should have killed him. The Kushanāda brings its massive fist down on the Togabito, completely shattering the cube you were standing on even as you land softly on a nearby structure which seems to float in the air, suspended at about the creature's eye level when it rises up from delivering the blow.

You sheath your sword as you announce your presence. “I am Captain Kusajishi, sent by Inari Ōkami as a messanger!”

The massive creature, which seemed at first intent on smashing you as well, pauses. It looms over you, as if expecting you to provide an account of yourself.

“Hell is bleeding over into the Living World,” you declare to the giant beast in a firm tone, not entirely sure that it can even understand what you're saying. “One of our friends, a shinigami with hollow powers, was drawn into Hell by mistake because of it. This is dangerous for everyone concerned... and I'm willing to offer our help in putting it right.”

In response the giant leans down, extending a single finger towards you and slowly pressing it against your forehead. The tap isn't violent, especially considering the beast's size, but in the midst of a searing flash of light you feel an intense and spreading pain.

“What did that thing just do!?” Tenkotsuki demands loudly, then falls silent. You look down, seeing that you have been transformed quite against your will. Golden skulls decorate your shoulders, ribs cover your bust, and what feels like a second spine lays just atop your own and connects to a ring of large claws and fangs around your waist. Your right arm is protected by smooth armoring, ending in a skeletal-looking gauntlet that protects your knuckles.

“Tenkotsuki?” you ask aloud, receiving no reply. “Rosa? Anyone!?”

A different Kushanāda approaches, looking down at you in ignorance of the fact that its compatriot's apparent gift has robbed you of the assistance of your two zanpakuto.

“What's happened to me!? Where is my friend?”

The best stares at you with empty eyes, then gestures into the distance. With a great leap you land atop its hand, and see that the world seems to abruptly cease in that direction... a drop down the the level below you?”

The guardians of Hell are capable of concentrating power in a single "worthy" individual, which allows limited command over the other guardians, condemning souls to lower levels of Hell or raising them to a higher level, or releasing them entirely. The Kushanada acknowledged Riku as having a right to be there and that she's acting for the right reasons, and as a result Riku is essentially the Queen of Hell right now.

The powers totally conflict with the way her zanpakuto work however, so she could never keep them. In fact she's quite lucky to have managed the transfer at all.

It's a whole different kettle of fish.

Not wanting to waste time in finding Lisa you shout your thanks at the Kushanāda as you run along the length of its arm and spring from its outstretched finger, leaping from cube to floating cube until you reach the end and dive headfirst into the waters far, far below. You pass through the second level of Hell in mere moments, knowing from the powers and instinct granted you by the guardians of this twisted realm that Lisa did the same to flee from them not long before you arrived.

Yellow lava pools in concentric rings and terraces on the third level of Hell, which is a barren realm of glowing smoke and clouds of steam as far as you can see. Few Togabito ever reach this place, and fewer still would ever desire to do so intentionally. Landing atop a dark mesa of volcanic rock, you search for the location where Lisa arrived here and quickly find her reiasu... or something that resembles it.

She's begun to hollowfy, not as in drawing out her mask but becoming a menos as she was on the night Aizen betrayed all of you. Her face is mostly covered by a rough-formed mask, with only her left eye and part of her forehead still exposed, though she's currently cowering in the shadow of this plateau you can tell her upper body is covered in smooth white plates with angular, overlapping margins. Her zanpakuto Hagurotonbo is released, taking the form of an oversized spear laid at her side.

“What happened to you, Lisa?” you ask aloud, causing her to raise her head and glare at you. Her hand reaches for her weapon, and as she rises you can see her body covered in roughly formed iron chains. Those chains bind her here, you realize... the work of the Kushanāda.

>Attempt to reason with what's left of her rational mind... her mask still isn't fully formed yet.

Couldn't it be a potentially bad idea to break her mask? Doesn't that kill hollows?

Though if I'm misunderstanding and that "cures" her of being a Visored, couldn't that be worse? The inner Hollows take on an aspect of their host's emotions, so wouldn't getting rid of that also remove that emotion?

Though I might be talking out of my ass, after the first 4 chapters of the last arc I just looked at the pictures. Reading it was physically painful.

Actually, I'm somewhat concerned.

Lisa isn't hollowfying, she's becoming a menos. Forgive me if I missed something, but that's not supposed to happen, is it? A menos is a congolomeration of souls, rather than a singular hollow, which is just one soul that has been twisted.

Shinigami -> Menos is an impossible transformation, is it not? So there must be something weird going on.

With a speed that honestly comes as a surprise, no doubt increased by the powers of Hell that have been granted to you by its guardians, you assault the hollowfied Lieutenant at full force. Its reflexes may not be as quick as when Lisa is in control, which allows you to almost effortlessly slice Hagurotonbo cleanly through its shaft off a quick draw then crush her mask with your sheath as you follow through. Two more blindingly quick slashes sever the chains which were binding her, and her body goes limp as for a brief moment neither hollow nor shinigami is in full control.

“What's going on?” she asks wearily into your shoulder as you prop her up. “Why are you here, Captain? And for that matter, where is here?”

“You're in the third level of Hell, Lisa,” you tell her quietly, taking a knee with her leaning against you. The area around Osorezan is unstable, it seems that a part of Hell has somehow overlapped over the living world there and you stumbled through it by accident. I'm here to rescue you and fix the damage if I can.”

“You came into Hell willingly?” she demands, her voice finally finding some strength. “You're insane... did Shinji put you up to this? And what's with your clothes, why aren't you hollowfied?”

“Why were you hollowfied?”

“Something about this place,” she explains, her body relaxing again as she forces herself to try and remain calm. “It caused my hollow powers to go out of control... the people on the levels above had masks as well, maybe it was caused by the same effect which keeps them here.”

“Maybe,” you agree thoughtfully. “Since I'm technically allowed to be here the Kushanāda granted me some sort of power. It suppresses my other two zanpakuto, so I guess that's the difference.”

“I'm not even going to question that,” she sighs, glancing at your skull-emblazoned armor. “I suppose I owe you one... assuming you have an escape plan.”

“I plan to walk out like a normal person,” you shrug. “Just like that.”

“Just like that,” a new voice repeats from behind you... a Sinner this far down into Hell? The guardians knew of this, though they don't know his name or crime. Only that he's been running free and causing trouble.

“Do you think this is smart?” you ask, turning to face the lanky newcomer. White robes and hair, with black bandages that cover most of his face, head, and arms. “You're staring down a Captain-class shinigami with the powers of Hell itself supporting her... in this realm my will is Law.”

“And you can get me out of here!” the sinner insists with a wild grin. “You have the one ability I've craved for God only knows how long... to leave! What's one more soul escaping this realm with you?”

“The difference between using my powers and abusing them,” you insist sternly, causing the man to scowl back at you. “Get out of my way, I'm saving a soul that doesn't belong here and fixing what's gone wrong with Hell itself on my way out.”

“I can't let you do that,” the sinner insists, drawing a sword.

“Oh,” you snarl, sweeping your sword to the side in a wide gesture, “I think you'll find you can.”

The grim lands of Hell itself morph and twist at your command, a pillar of yellowish lava rising up to stop his sword arm mere moments before it would have struck your shoulder and solidifying in place. He strains for a moment before finding his legs similarly bound up the knees, the ground slowly advancing towards his waist.

“No!” he shouts, redoubling her efforts. “How could you cast judgment so easily? Have you no human decency!?”

You glare at him as Hell begins to swallow him feet-first, pulling him down into its depths at your command. “Have you?”

When his only response is to shout incoherently at you, you cross your arms and look him straight in the eye. “Thought not.”

With a loud snap Hell snaps the sinner's spine, putting a temporary end to his resistance and dragging him another level deeper and out of sight. Lisa stares at you for a moment before shaking her head and sheathing Hagurotonbo.

“You know the phrase 'hell hath no fury', Captain?”

“Yes.”

“Well, Hell always hath more fury,” she observes. “Hell hath no shortage of fury, and I'll never compare anything else to it so long as I live.”

“Fair enough,” you nod, sheathing Tenkotsuki with a pang of longing for her voice. “Let's get out of here.”

“Again, how?”

Moments later you emerge through the top of one of the white cubes common in the first level of Hell, still explaining to Lisa as she stares wide-eyed in your arms.

“And so that's how I figured it out,” you summarize cheerfully, pleased that this trick worked. “The guardians don't crush any of the structures or environment as they move because they can just pass through Hell's landscape! It's selective phasing!”

“Fascinating,” Lisa mutters, still staring like a deer in headlights after having been carried through the fabric of two layers of Hell. “But how do we leave?”

“Simple,” you insist as a large hand emerges from the cube around you. “We hitch a ride!”

The Kushanāda pushes you skyward, space warping around its palm as it creates a hell portal...

“I hope this works!” Lisa shouts.

“So do I!” you shout back...

...and then you emerge from two massive, ornate doors that you've never been happier to see in your life with Lisa still in your arms. Ready to greet you is a massive crowd of shinigami that have converged on the temple at Osorezan, lead by none other than your sister. Kaoru's used her Bankai to try and control what's happening in the space around the temple, in order to reduce what must seem like a disaster in progress.

“Riku!?” she shouts in disbelief as the doors of the portal slam shut. “What the hell... sorry, what happened to you?”

“Long story short I've been appointed temporary Queen of Hell,” you explain, passing Lisa off to Kai and Mirai who lead her away with equally wide eyes. “Now, what do we do about this...”

Shortly, Yoruichi joins you as well with a wry grin on her face. “You know, 'Queen of the Damned' is actually a pretty good look on you.”

“Enjoy it while it lasts,” you grumble, your eyes still locked on the portal which still hasn't disappeared. “If I want to hear from my own zanpakuto again I've gotta find a way to get rid of this costume jewelry and fix what's wrong with Hell.”

“What is wrong with hell?” Kaoru asks. “Best I can do is try and stop it from getting worse, but Hell's kind of an obscure topic.”

“Kisuke told me...” Yoruichi begins before you guess what he said.

“That Osorezan was a point where the Living World and Hell were already close, and that now something has caused the planes to literally drift out of alignment?”

Your wife stares at you in mild surprise. “Yes, actually.”

“The title 'Queen of Hell' isn't just a joke,” you explain. “For a short time I've known how it feels to have an entire spiritual realm bend to my every whim, effortlessly.”

“No temptation at all?” Kaoru asks, glancing again at your golden armor.

You shake your head. “I'd get lonely down there.”

“Figured as much,” Yoruichi nods. “So you think you can move Hell back into alignment?”

He'll continue to be a loose cannon, but he's really been smacked the fuck down. And you did so without risk of overstepping your bounds, so IC there are arguments in favor of both plans.

As things stand Riku is parting with Hell on good terms... or rather if she had to go back it wouldn't go out of its way to fuck her over.

Actually if we wanna go fully cheese, need to hop back to hell with Yoruichi, and do that trashy romance look with the woman on the ground clutching at Riku's leg, possibly draped in chains, while Riku presides over the Hell and its damned souls.

Take a picture of THAT for posterity. It'll never happen again.

“Yoruichi, Kaoru, way I see it we have three possibilities: the one that only risks my life, the one that risks my life and Kaoru's lives, and the one that only risks ruffling the Shihōin Clan's feathers.”

Without hesitation, Yoruichi responds. “Which thing do you need?”

“Are you sure?”

“Positive,” she insists. “This is about keeping Hell from overlaying the Living World, I'm pretty confident we can win that argument.”

You nod quietly, thankful for your wife's willingness to go out of her way to make this sort of thing work. “Okay, I need you to produce a copy of the Ōin for me. Kaoru, I need you to continue controlling our surroundings and limiting Hell's encroachment.”

“I understand,” Kaoru nods, determined to do her part. To have held Hell at bay on her own like this... she's already done more than anyone could possibly expect. Keeping it up now is a matter of duty, both to the Seireitei and to her family.

“Wait a minute!” Yoruichi insists, pulling something else entirely from a pocket in her uniform. “There's just no way I could forgive myself for missing this sort of chance.”

It's a camera.

After taking a dozen pictures or so to commemorate the day you became Queen of Hell, including one that you can never under any circumstances show to your children or the rest of your family, Yoruichi places a copy of the Ōin into your palm. “I hope you realize if this were anyone else...”

“I know,” you nod, walking towards the portal and raising the Ōin in front of you. “Work with me here, Hell. One last time.”

Then you release the artifact into the air, drawing Tenkotsuki and slicing it in one clean stoke.

You're not entirely sure how it happens. For a few moments your mind isn't fully your own, but rather an extension of... something else. Something massive, ancient, and powerful beyond reckoning. Then you see that the Gate is beginning to fade away, and with it your armor. As Tenkotsuki and Rosa's presence returns to your mind the power of Hell flows out of your body, leaving a tiny set of golden characters on your palm: “Myōhi”. Then this set of symbols disappears as well, leaving you with two stunned but wonderfully familiar zanpakuto.

“What was that?” Rosa demands.

“We were temporarily suppressed by the powers of Hell,” Tenkotsuki summarizes. “And it appears that Hell has acknowledged a debt of gratitude.”

“Indeed,” you mutter, still stunned at what's just happened. “Kaoru? How are we doing?”

“Hell's encroachment into the living world has ended,” she sighs, sealing her zanpakuto. “Come on, Yoruichi. Let's get everyone back to Isshin's home... the Vizard too.”
>>
>>950454
Yoruichi wouldn't run the risk of her Clan getting ripshit pissed at her and Riku for possibly breaking their rules about using powerful artifacts.

Riku literally went to Hell and back for someone she's interacted with like twice in the last century and has no particular responsibility towards. What does that suggest about what she'd do for a squad of Ninth Division shinigami?

Their respect and loyalty are earned. They know that Riku is obscenely strong and deeply loyal to her Division.

When and why did our entire division become heavy drinkers?
I wonder if this is just going to be another rumor and legendary name on top of the pile or if it'll have significant effect on how people throughout the seireitei see us.
They already fear us immensely for our power alone, and now we're associated with actual literal hell.

Also fuck off ichibe, we did what we were supposed to be doing, did it as quickly and smoothly as possible without any fuckups while we were at it.
What, did you WANT hell itself and all of it's lovely residents to spill into the mortal realm?
What's "out of hand" about it? Do you seriously think we're doing bad things with our power?
We're not being a dick about this, i'm getting the feeling you just don't like us.
>>
>>951200
Well, technically our job description is something like "maintain the balance of souls between the living world and the afterlife" innit?
Letting a hell rift open up and flood the living world with souls that were supposed to be damned seems pretty unbalanced if you ask me.
>>
Also, i've been wondering for some time now how our division gets along with others.
Every division is so insular that they form their own sort of "average personality," since one person chooses who gets in and what they do all the time.

From what i've seen so far, our guys seem to be the strongest out of all the squads by a decent margin, which must mean they command a certain level of respect from others just by being in our division, but that might also make them cocky.
I gotta wonder what it's like whenever there's a BBQ or something and they mingle with 11th squad or 4th squad, what their interactions would be like.

It'd also be funny to see what happened whenever ichigo and the other ryoka ran into some grunts from our squad, if they ever did.

Are they bloodthirsty? Are they so numb to stupid shit that their thoughts can be summed up with a resounding "meh"? Are they intensely proud of their abilities? Are the other squads jealous, respectful, fearful?
What are their quotas like, what are their daily lives like, what kind of people do we have serving our division?
>>
>>951281
Ninth Division is viewed with a mix of respect and aversion, for mostly predictable reasons. They're good to have on your side and several Divisions have closer working relationships either with the Division or with specific Squads (ie Second, Fourth, the Kido Corps), but the other Divisions keep Ninth at arm's length much of the time.

As for the "typical" Ninth Division member the specifics vary, but they tend to be expressive, loyal, and bold. Those are all traits that the artistic and small-unit focuses of the Division tend to attract.

- OMAKE: A Christmas Haunting -

Aizen never thought much of Christmas. It was long a tradition not his own, one which he quietly maligned for its themes of charity, gratitude, and good will towards one's fellows. A celebration of the sort of weakness which plagued normal people, meant to guilt the strong into sacrificing more for their benefit. The very thought that the meek would somehow inherit the earth was preposterous.

This Christmas was no different, except for the fact that among the many Arrancar in his service none would have the temerity to raise the issue. No merrymaking, no decorations, and most importantly... no Fifth Division secret Santa.

“Lord Aizen,” a voice interrupts his secret glee, hidden behind the man's usual calm, impassive expression. “We caught a menos wandering around the perimeter of our base of operations in Hueco Mundo.”

“And what is so unusual about a single menos that it should require my attention, Ulquiorra?”

“It asked for you by name.”

Aizen raises his eyebrow at the news. A common hollow calling him out by name? Interesting indeed... and since this is a mere menos it certainly implies that this is not the reappearance of that wolf-woman whose spikes shattered his favorite teacup. So who could it be?

“You were right to bring this to me,” Aizen agrees with a quiet smile. “I would speak to this hollow.”

Ulquiorra bows, then leaves the room. A few moments later he returns with a powerfully-built hollow with a vaguely human shape to it, albeit covered in dark, rusted-looking chains that trail and clink behind it.

“And who might you be?”

The hollow speaks, its voice so raspy as to provide no hints as to its gender, grating on Aizen's ears with every syllable.

I am Kyton, and I come as a teacher.”

Aizen shakes his head, immediately disinterested. “This is hardly the time, and I have had more than my fill of being taught... mostly things that either did not matter or which actively hindered me.”

You are correct,” the creature clinks, sinister and cold in its tone. Even being the man he is, Aizen is given momentary pause by it. “Had you learned anything worth learning, would you be here?

“If there is a point to this interrogation, please come to it.”

I have heard of your deeds and judged you to be a wicked man, in need of my specific services. Over the course of the next three nights you will be visited by three immortal spirits. I can say no more of their character, but they offer learning in the language you might understand.”

“Enough!” Aizen shouts, drawing his blade and slicing straight through the menos as it cackles at him

“Mark my words, Aizen Sōsuke... you will know dread by the time your trial is complete, or you will surely perish under the weight of your own sin.”

With one last venomous hiss, the hollow fades away like a foul smoke upon a nonexistent breeze.

It's... Worth reading, I guess, if only to pick apart the black box that you can retrieve from the smoking wreckage. About halfway through, the QM and his audience start fighting each other and it turns into what is effectively a deathmarch to it's end.

Good fanart though.

That evening, as Aizen lay drifting on the edge of sleep, he was roused slowly by a sound that would be eerie... were its source not trying so hard.

“Woooo... wooOOooo...” Yoruichi's voice echoes through Aizen's chambers.

“What the devil are you doing here, Yoruichi?” Aizen demands, drawing the sword by his nightstand from its sheath.

“I am not Yoruichi,” the white-robed woman who is clearly Yoruichi insists in a similarly 'spooky' voice as her hair crackles with glowing arcs of lightning. “I am the Ghost of Christmas Past, and I have come to show you how things were on Christmases long, long ago!”

“You shall do no such thing, were-cat!” Aizen insists, slashing through the specter's body only for her to reappear behind him.

“Were-cat?” the otherwordly woman frowns. “Have you been talking with Byakuya in secret?”

“It seemed an apt insult,” Aizen returns, lowering his sword. He certainly connected, the strike simply did nothing to its intended victim. “So I borrowed it.”

“Just like I'm going to borrow you!”

In a flash the rogue Captain's bedchambers are gone, replaced by the rough, unwelcoming facades and dirty streets of the outer Rukongai. Aizen detected no movement, no rush of wind, no change of reiatsu... an illusion, then?

“This is as real as your own memories,” Yoruichi seems to read his thoughts. “Come along, Aizen. Come bear witness to a Christmas eve, one hundred and twenty years ago.”

The spectral intruder leads Aizen to a young girl, calling out to passersby with a small bundle of flowers in her hand. One stops and pays her a few coins, taking the flowers in turn with a kind word and a smile... a flower-seller? Here of all places?

“Pretty young thing, isn't she?” Yoruichi muses. “Or rather her features may be plain, but her smile? Her obvious happiness? Those are just so delightful, aren't they?”

“Who is this girl?” Aizen asks coolly. “What relevance does this scene bear?”

“You killed her later in the evening,” Yoruichi glares, turning to face the accused. “In your experiments on the Hōgyoku. She offered you her meager day's worth of ryō. You dropped it on the ground. She begged... pleaded with you to leave her in peace.”

“All they ever found were her tattered clothes, and a small pile of coins. Ring a bell? I'm not surprised that the answer is no.”

“No, I don't remember her,” Aizen shakes his head. “Many were sacrificed. I have long since accepted the reality that sometimes for something important enough to happen some sacrifices must be made."

"Do you wish to see some more of your... sacrifices, as you call them?"

“So many of them, Aizen,” Yoruichi sighs as a series of banal images flash before them. An elderly man bringing his wife a cup of hot tea, a young boy playing with a puppy, two children playing tops, a woman baking bread. “So many lives cut short, for what? For your own blind ambition? So much sin lies upon your blackened soul, Aizen. So much sin I doubt you'll ever be free of it if you started repenting this very moment.”

“The only sin would be to stop now,” Aizen glares at the specter of Yoruichi. “Begone, whatever you are. We have no further cause to share words.”

That morning Aizen awoke unchanged, lived through a perfectly ordinary day of ruling a small army of quincy and hollows... only having to punish one of them for insubordination. Grimmpow... again. Then he returned to his bedchambers, only to be greeted by another familiar voice.

“Still sleepin' like a baby, I see,” Shinji sighs. “No conscience in you at all. Honestly, I just don't see much of a point in it.”

“And you might be?”

“I'm the Ghost of Christmas Present,” he grins with those wide, sparkly teeth of his. “I'm gonna show your dumb ass how things are[/], whether you like it or not!”

An image of Yoruichi and Riku in the kitchen shouting frantically at each other greets the two Captains, though it's plain to see that neither woman is upset. Things are just hectic at the moment... Riku even flings a little bit of dough at her partner, who laughs as she flicks a bit of white topping back in retaliation. Outside Aizen hears more laughter, a whole chorus of voices joined together in merriment.

“You need any help in here?” Gin asks, poking his head in the doorway.

“We've got it!” Riku insists, using her foot to close a drawer behind her after retrieving a knife of some kind. “Shoo, boy! You grew out of licking the bowl a hundred years ago!”

“How saccharine,” Aizen sneers. “Is this supposed to make me feel badly about betraying the Soul Society? Because if so, it's hardly working.”

“No, dumbass,” Shinji insists, pointing at another familiar face: Hinamori. Surprising to see her here so soon after Aizen's departure.

“Come along, Captain Ichimaru,” she insists, grabbing Gin by the ear. “You've had too much to drink again, haven't you?”

“Sorry, mom...” he taunts, allowing himself to be led away by the ear. “I think someone wants to do...”

Don't say it... don't say it... don't say it...

“... some karaoke.”

Oh, thank the heavens...

“... and then secret Santas.”

God... DAMN IT GIN.

“So what moral is this experience supposed to convey?”

Shinji's ghost sighs again, offering a dismissive wave of his hand. “I knew this'd be a huge waste of time. Fact is you don't give a damn that literally every other Captain can find meaning in their lives. Yer not gonna suddenly start thinkin' hey, maybe nothin's wrong with them, maybe it's me.”

“Even that girl you thought was so infatuated with you is fine without you. She didn't get there on her own of course, but people took care of her because that's just what people do!”

“I fail to see how this is supposed to change my mind about leaving the Seireitei. Their values and mine do not align, and never did. That's all.”

“Well,” Shinji shrugs. “Can't say I didn't try my best. Better clear out so the next guy can take over... and trust me, Aizen... you're not gonna want to miss this one.”

One more featureless day of routine and several cups of tea later, Aizen returns to bed. For a while he remains vigilant, ready to intercept the last spirit, but eventually drifts off once again.

This time, it's a silent, accusing stare which greets him.

“Captain Kusajishi,” he frowns, closely examining her. “What lesson have you come to teach me? And what is wrong with your outfit?”

The woman's uniform is covered in ornate, vaguely skeletal parts: a chestplate of sorts on under her sleeveless Captain's haori, golden skulls with horns adorning her shoulders and one arm entirely encased in golden armor plates. Her eyes are black and pitiless, and behind her are nine black tails of swirling reiatsu, flickering and reforming as if barely contained. Wordlessly she beckons him to stand, which he cautiously does... and then she slams her palm onto the floor.
>4/?
>>
>>957927
>https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8Yn9hRYFwg
Behind her appears a fell gate with two doors, emblazoned in crimson flames and decorated by tortured-looking skeletal figures... the Gates of Hell? How did she summon those here?

The doors slowly open in a rush of wind, sucking Aizen towards them and whipping at Kusajishi where she stands. The Captain seems to hardly take note of the vortex which eventually pulls Aizen quite unwillingly from the floor and through the air, though she does catch him by his collar and walk with him in hand towards the gate... which snaps shut behind her.

The two fall through the air, high above what seems to be an endless plain of white cubes patrolled by gaunt, skeletal giants... the foul wind blowing past their ears is deafening, and she shows no sign of stopping. Indeed she passes straight through what appears solid stone, and out into an endless expanse of sky high about a vast blue sea. This too she passes as if it's totally intangible, as she does a large caldera of golden lava that seems not to cause either traveler discomfort, and afterwards a sea of black sand. The sand seems to emit a slight hint of reiatsu... the ancient, ground-up bones of Hell's victims beyond count comprise the very landscape of this Fourth level, and Aizen is glad to put it behind him as they arrive on the Fifth level of Hell.

“End of the line,” Riku growls, throwing Aizen to the tortured black landscape. “The deepest circle of Hell... tell me, what do you see?”

Before his eyes lies a skeleton, more fragments than identifiable bones, its skull lying weathered but intact on its side. And by the skeleton lies a rusted piece of curved metal, its laminated layers peeling and flaking away after exposure to the rigors of time. But this, this at least is recognizable to the traitor's eyes... by its familiar hexagonal guard.

Kyōka Suigetsu.

“That's right, Aizen Sōsuke,” Kusajishi declares, gazing down with emotionless eyes. “This is Christmas Day, three thousand years from now. This is the fate which awaits a man with such a twisted soul as yours.”

As if to add one final insult she crushes the skull underfoot, what little remains of the bone turning to dust rather than cracking. “You're probably thinking you can avoid this fate if you simply win? Well now, let's see some other options, shall we?”

Hell disappears, as does Kusajishi's golden armor. Before them in the darkness sits a lone figure, strapped to a chair with heavy black bindings. The man is old, seemingly as old as Yamamoto was during the final years of his life.

“Or if you do what you're planning and it succeeds...”

The ghostly image of Aizen wavers, suddenly youthful on the outside but otherwise seemingly dead. His visible eye is devoid of any spark of life, his mouth hangs slightly open... so many years in Muken must have driven him out of his mind.

“Or maybe this suits you better?”

Within a stone sarcophagus Aizen senses his own reiatsu, trapped there, unable to escape through his own power. His own body stabbed through with a sword, ice covering the area around the wound is the next vision... and the next sees Riku standing over his body in the center of a swirling vortex of reiatsu... the next his severed head at Yoruichi's feet... another by incineration... another having been devoured by his own Hōgyoku.

“These images frighten you,” Kusaishi whispers menacingly. “Don't try and deny it, accept it! I'm getting these from inside your own head. They're your fears, your paranoia, your... loneliness. In all these scenes you die alone, unmourned, to be forgotten.”

Aizen stares at the image in alarm. “You bastard...”

“That's what you fear most... and what you've done everything in your power to ensure happens.”

Then, just as abruptly, the images fade. The hollow calling itself Kyton stands across from Aizen, grinning maniacally. “You are a wicked man indeed, Aizen Sōsuke... but powerful, also. I doubt I have the strength to defeat you, even my own signature ability hardly kept you distracted for more than a few seconds.”

Do with me as you please,” the hollow bows its head.

Aizen raises his sword high above the hollow's head... and stops. After a moment he sheathes his blade and offers a single order.

“Leave.”

Kyton looks back up, its eyes full of glee. “But of course. I thank you for the delicious Christmas feast...

Ulquiorra watches in confusion as Lord Aizen simply allows the hollow that assaulted him leave, and frowns.

"Shall I have him tailed, Lord Aizen?"

"No. Do not mention this again, Ulquiorra."
>>
So Aizen calling Grimmjow "Grimmpow" is canon now, right?

Surely Aizen couldn't be assed to remember the name of one so insignificant and useless as him?
>>
>>958033
Sure, why not. Same with various other insulting mispronunciations you could come up with.

And that's the end of the Omake. This Vasto Lorde's ability was to read people's minds, specifically showing them images of things that terrify them and capturing the reiatsu they release in response to the stimulus. Kyton basically EATS FEAR, and seeks out 'twisted' and 'evil' victims who are most likely to have powerful, deep-seated fears to prey on. Aizen was shaken just enough by his experience that he didn't know quite what to do with Kyton. So he deferred judgment.
>>
>>958087
that part featuring "Goddess of Hell" Riku was scary yet awesome at the same time since it's one of Aizen's deep seated fears. Which is Ironic considering Riku did become "Goddess of Hell" for a day. I wonder what would his reaction to Riku sending him a photo of herself in skullclad outfit?

It's interesting that this would show up in a fear projection. The first one was likely to frame the last one, but I wonder if this is another niggling little fear aizen has tied down in the back of his mind?

That the reason he can't find meaning is that there isn't that there are weaklings holding him back, but that there is something deeply wrong with him. It might be what drove him to take extreme measures in the first place, he can't be the broken one if supasses everone else, right?
>>
>>958281
the fact that he fears to admit there's something deeply wrong with his psyche scares him.

“That's bullshit!” Ichigo shouts, flipping his controller onto the ground in disgust as you fire a rocket right up his polygonal ass.

You shrug, not necessarily denying the accusation outright even as you dismiss it. “You were the one who picked Derelict. 'My map', you called it?”

“Yeah, but you survived a freaking sticky to the face!”

“Because she grabbed the overshield,” Yoruichi observes calmly, setting her own controller aside. “You can get there quick enough through the teleporter.”

Isshin cocks an eyebrow at your wife. “You weren't much better, you know. Running around invisible with a shotgun is just plain dirty.”

“Yeah, and you were the one who ran into her ten times in a row!” Ichigo protests. “She went plus seventeen!”

“I didn't see you helping!”

“You didn't see anything! That's the problem!”

“So the standings are two rounds to nothing,” you remind them both. “Yoruichi started us off doing kaibun...”

Isshin shoots his son a pointed glare. “How are you even passing your classes like that?”

“Shut it, old man. How is doing palindromes even a team game?”

“Fair point, when you're playing it's not much of a team is it?” Yoruichi taunts your newphew.

“... and then Ichigo tried to be clever and picked Halo,” you recount, shooting Ichigo a patronizing, smug grin. “Since I've been playing video games since he was in diapers we won that too. And unless I'm mistaken that means it's my pick to seal the win?”

“That's right,” Isshin nods solemnly. “So let's see what you come up with...”

“Egyptian ratscrew. Redneck rules.”

“I don't actually understand what you just said,” Isshin admits, shaking his head. “Ichigo? Yoruichi?”

Ichigo shakes his head, but Yoruichi sighs. “Yeah, I get you. This is a popular game among the Onmitsu lately.”

She begins to explain the rules of the game: decks are dealt face-down and cards are flipped face-up outwards onto a center pile, rotating clockwise. If a face card or an ace is dealt the next player has a certain number of chances to play one of his own or the 'challenger' takes the pile, adding it to the bottom of their deck. If a certain series of cards is played in order, either doubles, sandwiches, or three of the same suite by agreement at the table, then players can slap the pile to claim it. A player who plays the card which triggers this must touch their forehead first before going for the slap.

“So it's a game of pattern recognition, card counting, and speed,” Isshin summarizes. “And only one player has to win for the team to win.”

“That's right,” you nod. “To make it a little more fair, keep some competition between our side, how about the loser on the winning team has to do something for the winner?”

“I'd be game for that,” Yoruichi yawns, stretching out her arms and neck in preparation for the game to come. “Isshin, you want some other sort of handicap?”

Your brother shakes his head. “No, I agree to those terms.”

You deal out the cards in four stacks, and starting with Ichigo each player begins. Things start off in Yoruichi's favor with a solid challenge, and Ichigo's deck quickly dwindles due to the fact that he just can't keep up with the reflexes of three Captains. But on a double Isshin manages to hold your hand off just long enough for his son to slip his under and slap the pile and stay in the game... so that's how it's going to be played? Fine then, Isshin. You can play that game. Off two Jacks you manage to snag a large pile of cards that puts you firmly in the lead.

The game works its way around the table several times. Ichigo's deck begins to dwindle yet again, until you're positive he has no face cards left. Yoruichi loses a few challenges in a row to Isshin, grumbling about her luck. Then it happens: Jack of diamonds, passing from you to Isshin, then King of hearts passing back to you. Your next card is the Jack of spades, meaning it's going to be a sandwich. You lose this exchange and you'll have lost the lead and passed it to Isshin, and at this rate you and Yoruichi might actually be in trouble. But if you somehow win this pile you'll have basically clinched the game and carried the day.

But to do that you'll have to play the card, tap your own forehead, and still beat Isshin to it.

Unless...

“Reach for it, mister,” you tell your brother, narrowing your eyes and putting on a bad Western drawl.

Isshin's hand is already moving for the pile by the time your own hand is withdrawing, and if things had been different he'd have beaten you there for sure. But instead he finds Yoruichi's fingertips pressing against the inside of his thumb, pushing and slowing his hand just long enough for you to tap your forehead and slide your hand in under theirs before Ichigo can do the same.

“Whoops,” Yoruichi muses. “I tried to sneak in under your hand, Isshin. Sorry 'bout that.”

Ichigo is out two turns later, and Yoruichi a few after that. And after your wife's interference, Isshin ends up flipping the two of diamonds as his last card and concedes.

>>
>>965460
“Hey, that means we win!” you exclaim rather smugly. “I'll come up with something I want you to do for me when we get home.”

“Oh I'm sure,” Yoruichi nods slyly. “So ends game night?”

“Yeah, I guess,” Isshin says, rubbing the back of his neck. “Masaki'll be back with the girls in a few minutes, sure you don't wanna stay for dinner?”

“Can't, sorry,” you apologize quietly. “There's some work that I need to take care of back home... kind of a troubling case.”

“I remember how it is,” Isshin nods sternly, grabbing Ichigo by the hair. “Thanks for comin' over anyway. Hey, brat. Say goodbye to your aunt.”

With a sidelong glare at his father, Ichigo nods as well. “Yuzu and Karin would like to see you too, so stop by again some time.”

“I think we'd both be happy to,” Yoruichi agrees with a smile. “Come on, let's get back to it.”

After departing the Kurosaki residence, Yoruichi spares you a glance. “So, about that wager of ours...”

Riku's been similarly marked by Hell as when Hummingbird did it, so in theory she could go back any time she felt like it. The problem is that even the few Central 46 who are firmly behind her would struggle to excuse such an infraction. So what's Riku's opinion on robots? Does she have a sour opinion on them? Extend that question to the Divine and Shimigami in general.

>Riku
The idea interests her in the sense of creating actual life, not so interested in time saving conveniences. She would of course recognize that humans have different concerns, being on the whole far squishier.
>Divine
Similar to the above.
>Shinigami
Most wouldn't even know what a robot really was, let alone concern themselves with any moral or social implications surrounding them. Higher-ranked shinigami might be familiar with the topic, but either not really care or only take a passing interest. The real exception of course is the SRDI.

Name one human irl/fictional invention that Riku would kill to get her hands on C-46 regulations and Divine Law be damned. Extend that question to Aizen.

what kind of tea? What flavor? what's your opinion on iced tea if you're such a connoisseur of tea drinking and brewing?

"It was a pu'er tea from wild trees in Manzhuan. As for 'iced' tea, I find that only mugicha is acceptable cold."

- OMAKE: The Tree -

“Sir, I was told to report here?”

A grizzled-looking shinigami with white stubble gracing his jawline glances upwards at the newcomer, a young, clean-shaven man with a carefully trimmed military haircut. The older man raises an eyebrow. “Yeah, I'd believe it. You the replacement?”

“Sato Ren'ichi,” the junior shinigami offers his name.

“Sato then,” the man nods. “Tanaka Hatsuo, I'll be your Fireteam leader.”

Tanaka then resumes his work, using a tiny flat-head screwdriver to root around inside the end of a strand of colored lights. Sato watches for a moment in silence. “Um... sir?”

“Sato?”

“What exactly are we doing here?”

Tanaka glances up again. “What does it look like, rifleman?”

“It... looks like a strand of lights?”

“Then that's what it is,” Tanaka announces, placing a tiny fuse into a box at the end of the strand. “Christmas lights to be exact, our fireteam's on light duties this year.”

“And what are we supposed to do with this?”

Tanaka waves at a nearby fir, stately and very tall. “Up there, rifleman.”

“Up there? Sir, that's gotta be at least twenty meters!”

“That's right,” Tanaka nods. “Last time we measured it that tree was twenty meters exactly, and we ain't getting these lights on it chatting down here.”

It takes some time for the fireteam to climb up into the tree in question, and of course as the new recruit it's Sato who ends up climbing nearly twenty meters to the very top with the strand of lights and loops it around a branch.

“We'll walk around the base!” Tanaka calls up to him. “You just climb down and make sure the strands don't get caught on anything!”

An hour later three sweaty shinigami find themselves standing around the trunk of a tall fir tree covered in lights, and Tanaka finally introduces Sato to his other teammate Abashiri Tsuko, a middle-aged woman of unremarkable if cheery features.

“So, where's the star?” Abashiri asks thoughtfully. “Tanaka, you did remember to send the new guy up with it, right?”

“I... might've forgotten,” Tanaka admits gruffly. “You think the Captain will notice?”

Abashiri raises her eyebrow. “My bet is it's the first thing she asks when she gets back.”

“What's gonna be the first thing I ask?” a familiar voice inquires, and all three shinigami's faces turn pale.

“Was that... who I think it was?” Sato whispers.

Abashiri sighs to herself. “Yes, new guy. That's exactly who you think it is.”

“Captain,” Tanaka bows stiffly. “We were just decorating the tree, as per your orders.”

Captain Kusajishi glances up and down the full height of the fir tree and nods, seemingly satisfied. “Looks good.”

The three breathe a sigh of collective relief before Kusajishi continues, shifting the weight of a bundle of fabric under her arm: like red velvet trimmed in white fur. “You're gonna put the star up, right?”

“We... forgot,” Tanaka admits.

“No big deal,” the Captain insists. “I mean it's not like it's that difficult to just get back up there.”

“Well...” Tanaka frowns. “We kind of... don't have anyone who can create a reishi foothold.”

Captain Kusajishi seems completely befuddled. “Really? A veteran like you can't do it, Tanaka?”

Tanaka nods solemnly. “Mighta gotten my ears messed up a bit in the war. Sense of balance isn't what it was... which is fine if I stay on the ground.”

“I see. Well, hand me that star then,” the Captain insists quietly, holding out her hand towards Abishiri who hands her the tree topper in question in exchange for the bundle under her superior's arm.

“Do you mean to do it yourself, Captain?” Sato asks.

Kusajishi however takes back the bundle of fabric from his teammate. “I already did.”

Sato stares hard at his new Captain, who isn't holding the large ornament anymore. Instead it's atop the tree... did she even move? Literally how!?

“I... what just happened?” the rookie shinigami stammers, still trying to work out in his head what just happened.

“You'll get used to it, rookie,” Tanaka laughs.

“So what's the package?” Abishiri asks curiously. “Is it a Santa costume of some kind?”

Kusajishi does an abrupt about face, then starts walking. “It's for a friend. Carry on, Tanaka.”

“I wonder what that's all about?” Abishiri muses.

Tanaka cocks a steel-gray eyebrow. “Pretty sure it's none of our business, Abishiri.”

“We'll report in to Lieutenant Matsumoto,” he continues, “then some of us have a concert to get ready for.”

“That's right,” Abishiri nods thoughtfully. “That's this Friday, isn't it?”

“What's this Friday?” Sato asks.

“Annual Christmas concert,” Tanaka explains. “Bernstein's MASS this year, isn't it?”

“Yup,” Abishiri sighs dramatically. “God help us all, Yamamoto's going to hate it...”

Some time later, Captain Kusajishi finds herself stepping into her office with a package in hand. She sets it down across from Captain Shihoin, who picks it up and unfolds it.

"Nice," she approves, examining the finely-crafted Santa robes and hat handed to her by her wife. "These are even better than the last ones."

"They're meant to last," Kusajishi explains, retrieving her own matching robes from under her desk. "Kai and Mirai will take the North districts, I'm taking the South districts, and I've talked Rangiku into taking the Eastern districts with Kuchiki."

"Leaving me with the West districts," Yoruichi summarizes in the midst of donning her outfit. "Understood. What's in the bags this year?"

"Medical surplus, some coin, toys," Kusajishi rattles off a quick list of seemingly mundane items. "Nowhere near a year's supply of any of those things course, but enough for the district Heads to make something of. One bright spot in their year I'd hope."

"How much total?"

"Two bags for each district, three hundred kilograms total," Kusajishi explains."

"Alright then," Yoruichi replies, straightening her hat and cracking her neck. "Not a minute to waste."

Hah. That's pretty great.

Putting that speed to work, I see.
Now all they need to do is recruit Unohana to visit some sick children while they’re sleeping, and we’ll really have a Christmas miracle.

With 6* Christmas Halibel being a thing I realized that Riku running off with a Santa costume "for a friend" could be taken two different ways
