Far off, nestled in an otherwise small Japanese town lies the Dark Gate Academy. An institution of tremendous size, the Academy holds a long kept secret. Unknown to the outside world, this unseemly town is home to a tear in our reality. A gate between our world and a bizarre dimension known as the Darkworld. The inhabitants of this hellish world breach this gate and attempt to flood into our reality and spread throughout the world on a regular basis. However, the Dark Gate Academy is home to students of truly extraordinary abilities. The ability to sense the presence of these evil Darkworld creatures, and defeat them in combat, sending them back through the gate.

They cannot close the rift between our world and the Darkworld, but the students and staff of Dark Gate Academy have dedicated their lives to using their amazing powers to hold back the darkness that plagues our world, even if it costs them their lives. They have risen up to the challenge and in secret have become great heroic defenders of the world as we know it.

For many years, Dark Gate Academy has held back the forces of the Darkworld, kept this unspeakable evil contained within their walls. But a dark cloud approaches, and times are about to change. A new chapter in the tale of Dark Gate Academy is about to begin.

“There you are. All clear!”

The needle pulls out of your arm, the blood drawn. “Ah, red!” Tekina smiles. “You'll be happy to know that you're not an evil demon in disguise!”

“Thanks, I was unsure...” you chuckle as you rise from the chair. You're surprised that you're able to have a joke about something like this... today's a tense one among the class. The day everyone is subjected to mandatory blood tests in order to determine who the supposed secret Archdemon is on campus. Alice and Ryoji were shipped off on a mission, though you already know the demons that lie within them, while everyone else will have some blood taken and tested throughout the day. You were the second person to get their blood taken this morning, the first being someone even more eager to get it out of the way than you.

“It's good to see you're not the culprit,” Anri nods.

“Did you think I was?” you ask.

Anri shakes her head. “Not at all. I had faith in you... but as a detective, it's always a good idea not to fully dismiss any possibility.”

And that's just one of the things that has you worried. You're clear, Anri's proven to be fully human with her test... but that's all you can be sure of right now. If there is indeed an Archdemon hiding out on campus... well, going by the sample of black blood Anri discovered in the Darkworld a while back, it's likely that the demon in question is from Class 1. The idea of someone you know being a demon in disguise... you trust your clubmates, your closest friends... but the fact that you can't tell for sure scares you.

“What about her?” you ask the nurse, pointing towards the blonde in the hospital bed. Rei Arisato.

Tekina shakes her head. “Oh, she's clear. I've ran enough tests on her to know... but now that you mention it... Isamu! You mind being tested next, since you're here?”

The blonde accompanying Rei, Isamu Iori, smiles and nods, as his hand continues to stroke the sleeping Rei's arm. “Of course, Madam Nurse! I shall gladly prove my legitimacy as a tremendous hero!”

As Isamu sits to have his blood taken, you and Anri step out of the room. “What an odd man...” Anri mutters. “His manner of speech is unconventional, yet his accent shows that it's not something he picked up through his background.”

“He's just a goof who likes playing pretend,” you explain. “This school has quite a few of those. Pretend heroes, pretend pirates, pretend detectives...”

“Yes, I suppose I shouldn't judge...” Anri smiles, before looking off into the distance.

“What's on your mind?” you ask. “The demon, or Gado's abs?”

“Both-I mean... the Archdemon,” Anri sighs, turning slightly red. “I have to keep my mind open, and that unfortunately means being open to the idea that one of our friends have been deceiving us. There are a few I can safely say likely aren't the culprit, Gado for one... but others I'm not so sure of. Risa's father was awakened in power, and yet she claims she never knew about the Darkworld until she came to this school. Could her father really have hidden that from her all this time? Furthermore, records show that Aoki never attended this school in the first place, which raises questions about the source of his powers. Mayu's father too was awakened, and Chuichi has lived in town his entire life, it's likely that either of them could have a stronger connection to the Darkworld than they lead on. Amaya and Makoto's lineage tracing back to the origins of the town, as well as their worship of The Elder One raises questions. Then there's Io, who has had a long history of deceit and lies, as we all know-”

“-Anri, calm down,” you sigh. “You're going on a paranoid overload.”

“I know,” Anri sighs. “I'm sorry, Kazuma. Though I'm sure I'll be focused on this all day... it's just something I can help. I'm not able to resist myself. You shouldn't worry about it, though. Relax and take your mind off it today, or else you'll be suspicious of all your friends not already tested. We'll have plenty of time to stress when the conclusive results come, but not right now.”

“You raise a good point,” you mutter, as you pull out your phone to find a message attached.

>From: Io

Well, you can't deny that a nice breakfast could take your mind off of things, but you also think that you should take a walk around the school to collect your thoughts on what will certainly be a stressful day.

>Go have breakfast

Getting a nice breakfast with your friend certainly couldn't hurt, so you decide to head back to the dorms, Anri following close behind you as you do. You suppose she wants to retreat back to her room in order to carry out some more research and look over her files and documents on the class.

Arriving in the dorm lounge, you're welcomed by the sight of three of your classmates. Of course, there's Io, grinning widely as you join her, an apron on over her usual shirt and suspenders. Also sharing the lounge's kitchen area is Amaya, and a red-faced Gado struggling to eat the rancid food she made for him. You're glad Io has more of a penchant for cooking than that.

"Do you like it?" Amaya asks him, expectantly. "I worked very hard on those eggs! I put as much love and care into them as I could! All of my forgiveness into this apology food!"

"It's terrible," Gado answers bluntly.

"Rude!" Amaya places her hands on her hips. "And if it's so terrible, why are you still eating it?"

"Because you made it," Gado explains. "Don't want you to feel bad, Blondie."

"Oh..." Amaya mumbles, turning a shade of pink. "That's... awfully nice of you..."

Anri soon enters the room, and soon approaches Gado. "Oh, hey brainiac," Gado smiles, welcoming her. "How'd the test go?"

"Myself and Kazuma are both clear."

"Heh, good to know," Gado replies as he spins around, placing his hands on Anri's hips and... kisses her? Hang on...

"How long has this been going on?" you ask.

"It's a... recent development," Anri explains, as Gado's hands roam all over her.

Amaya lets out a gasp, turning red. "How could... that is very inappropriate! You are in the presence of company, you know!"

"Yeah, and that company's getting a great show," Gado smirks, causing Amaya to storm off as usual. He turns back to Anri, who pushes him back slightly.

"Gado, I feel it's time we went over the regulations of this relationship of ours," Anri explains.

"Regu-what?" Gado raises an eyebrow. "What the hell does that mean?"

"Relationships are difficult," Anri explains. "They can often be bothersome. The fact that I am pursuing one to begin with speaks testaments on how I feel about you, Gado... however, I do abide by strict regulations in order to make sure the relationship is not a distraction to either of our other duties. Let's begin..."

Anri reaches into her bag and pulls out a large thick binder, which she carefully opens up at the first page. "Firstly, we are not an exclusive item. You may make it with other women, while I may spend time with other men, though I likely won't. The concept of a serious monogamous relationship alone stresses me."

"So... Blondie's still on the cards, huh?" Gado smirks.

Anri nods. "Indeed. Furthermore, in regards to our public displays of affection, I would prefer to limit it to simple handholding and the use of flirtatious language... honey bear."

"We're not keeping that one."

"Good, I wasn't confident in saying it," Anri replies.

"You know..." Gado mutters. "I gotta wake Kuin up in about an hour to get our tests, but since we've got that time on our hands, how about we... go over your regulations some more back in your room?"

Anri snaps the binder closed. "Yes. I would like that."

The two exit the room, as Io approaches you, dropping a nice heaping of hot breakfast food onto your plate. "There you go, Kaz! So, your test went well?"

"Yep," you reply.

"Oh, I had total faith in you!" Io smiles, as she lifts up her shirt, revealing a small band-aid on her arm. "I had my test earlier, and I'm all clear too!"

"Tekina said me and Anri were the first," you reply. "And the band-aids in her office aren't that colour."

Io pouts as she rolls down the sleeve. "Okay, you got me. You're good. My test isn't until much later in the day, but I'm telling people otherwise so that they don't give me weird stares and point fingers at me all day. Sorry."

"It's fine," you wave it off.

"By the way..." Io smiles. "I've got some big news... tremendous news, in fact!"

"Oh, and what's that?" you ask.

Io stretches her arms out wide. "I've managed to replenish my stocks, and I'm not gonna let these wares be confiscated. That's right, the Io Tanaka store is back in business, starting today! What do you think?"

>Sounds fun, good luck with it.

"Oh, I have my ways!" Io wags a finger in front of your face.

"That's it?" you ask. "You have your ways? Come on, Io. I know better than that. You didn't steal anything right? You didn't cheat anyone out of this?"

Io pouts. "You really think I would do that?"

"Yes."

"Oh..."

A long silence breaks between the two of you, as Io's smile quickly fades into a frown. You let out a sigh. "Sorry... that was rude of me," you reply. "I know you're trying to be a more honourable person these days... but you have to admit, you do have a history of-"

"I know my reputation," Io sighs. "I've lived my reputation, Kaz. I know I'm not perfect, and I never will be, but I just came to my best friend with good news, and the first thing you do is try to accuse me of stuff. That... that really hurts, Kaz."

"Io..." you mutter. "I know, I just came across as a jerk, but I was just curious-"

"Well, if you have to know," Io replies. "My sister gave them to me."

"Wait, you have a sister?" you ask.

Io shakes her head. "Look... just forget it, okay Kaz? Enjoy breakfast... I think I'm going to hold off on that grand re-opening of my sales for now... I'm going to take a nap until my blood test."

Io shuffles off, as you're left guiltily eating some of the delicious food she made for you. Out of the goodness of her heart... dammit. You knew she was hiding something, but you should have known she'd never tell you the truth if you acted like a paranoid untrusting ass... which is exactly what you did. Dammit...

With a sigh, you pull out your phone. Two new messages.

>Meet with Mai and Ukon

These two are kind of annoying, but you figure whatever they want to talk to you about must be pretty important considering how much they've been pressing it... then again, Ukon bothered you about playing basketball with him for months on end. Not exactly the most pressing issue.

You step out into the hallway and reply back to Mai's text message, asking where she is. Within seconds, you receive a reply.

>From: Mai
>3... 2... 1...

What the hell is that supposed to mea-

"Pile on!" you hear Ukon yell, as the two leap onto your back, causing you to lose balance as all three of you come crashing down onto the floor.

"Gah! W-why...?" you ask.

"Well, that is definitely not the spirit!" Ukon replies. "Kaz, you're supposed to be ready to give a double piggy-back at any moment!"

"Why?!"

"How can we trust you as a group leader when you aren't prepared for anything?" Mai asks.

"I'm not class leader," you reply. "That's either Makoto or Hanako, depending on your perspective."

"Yes, but you are leader of that club," Ukon explains. "And we want to join it, so you'd be our leader then! Oh nuts, I spoiled the surprise!"

"Ukon! We were going to build up to it!" Mai exclaims. "We had a routine and everything! I was going to unveil it in song!"

"Thank you Ukon," you mutter in earnest, knowing that he saved you from having to listen to Mai's singing.

"Oh geez... I'm very sorry Mai," Ukon sighs.

"It's okay!" Mai smiles, and pats him on the back. "Can't stay mad at friends!"

"So... you two... want to join the club?"

"Yep!" Mai laughs. "It sounds like a real fun group! People are saying you guys are like a family, you're so close. That kind of friendship... it leaves a burning feeling in my belly! I want to try it out!"

Mai pumps her fist, as you cross your arms. "Well, I can assure you that it isn't all that fun," you explain. "For one, we often get sent on the more dangerous missions. While the rest of you were handling basic school guarding, we were taking down an Archdemon."

"We can fight!" Mai protests. "We're in shape! I do my exercises every single day!"

"Yeah, we aren't slackers!" Ukon declares. "So, can we please join your club? Please?"

>Sure, you can join... as long as you pass these three challenges...

"Oh, I never back down from a challenge!" Ukon hunkers down, firmly rooting his ground in excitement. "Lay it on me!"

Wow, they seriously took that bait? You were joking, but... damn, guess you'll have to come up with some actual challenges now. "Okay... let me think... Oh, I know. First you must bring me one of the hats of Maro Kojima from Class 3."

"T-the leader of Class 3?" Ukon asks, slightly unsure. "But he's really tough, and kinda scary... and I think he really likes his hat..."

"Don't worry, you'll give it back," you explain. "Besides, his girlfriend once told me that he has a closet full of replacements. It'll be fine."

"Okay, and what's the second challenge?"

"Oh yeah, I said there were three, didn't I?" You ponder. "Okay... for the second challenge, you need to challenge Roka to a card game. I'll provide the deck if need be."

"Why a card game?" Mai asks.

"It's a soft spot for him," you explain. "Now, for your third challenge... you said you had a song prepared?"

"Yep!" Mai smiles. "I spend an entire half hour writing it!"

"Excellent," you nod. "I want you to sing that outside the door of Ryoji-wait, he's on a mission... Agent White!"

"You can count on us!" Mai exclaims. "We won't let you down!"

"Just you wait, Kazuma!" Ukon adds. "We'll finish your challenges in no time! It'll be a piece of cake!"

>Go to therapy

You make your way up to Akihito's office and knock lightly on the door. There's no immediate answer, so you decide to step in. It's not like Akihito is ever out of his office, or that he has all that many important things to do while in there. You enter, to see Akihito chatting away with the incredibly attractive teacher of both English and Gym, Miss Hirashi. She's not in her usual tight fitting shorts and tank top unfortunately, but instead in a full suit, trying as hard as she can to look professional.

"Honestly, it's a waste trying to look mature in that," Akihito explains. "You look more like a child in a suit than in your usual outfit."

"I didn't come here to get judged!" Hirashi exclaims. "I came here to learn all about this Dakrworld from you! I've been bursting with curiosity since I got here, and you've kept postponing, what with your work and your dates-"

"Let's keep that quiet," Akihito replied. "Besides, me and Yamano only went for dinner once. You can't blame that for taking up all of my time... Oh, Kazuma! Come on in! Sorry Hirashi, we'll have to continue this later."

Hirashi pouts. "Oh... okay, Akihito. If you say so..."

Hirashi skips out of the room as you take a seat on the sofa.

"Popular with the ladies, I take it?" you remark.

Akihito chuckles. "Well, It's not exactly your business as a student. How are you today, Kazuma? Have you had your blood test yet?"

"Yeah," you reply, showing the mark on your arm where blood was taken.

"This whole affair has me very worried," Akihito mentions. "Still, let's ignore it for now. Let's see, what's on the agenda for today... ah, Io!"

"Io?" you ask, your mind drifting back to events earlier. "I suppose you're focusing on her because she has therapy with you too?"

Akihito shrugs. "Well, more due to the fact that you spend a lot of time with her, and the two of you seem to be very close by every account I've heard. I have to ask though... in what way?"

"Huh?"

"In what way are you and Io close?" Akihito simply asks. "She's certainly close to you, but it's difficult to peg down exactly what she means to you. Kiriko was easy, but how would you describe your relationship with Io? What kind of relationship do the two of you have?"

Yikes, that's a tricky one. Oftentimes, you have no idea what to think of Io, to define her relationship to you... that's going to be tough.

>She's... a girl I know. Well, I don't really know her...
All we really know about her is that she's routinely dishonest, apparently something that continues despite her assurances to the contrary before. I just hope there's another healer waiting in the wings for after the lynching, it's the only thing she's been truly useful for so far.

>She's... a girl I know. Well, I don't really know her...

"Hmm... you sound very detached," Akihito notes. "I was under the impression that you were a close friend of hers."

"I mean..." you sigh. "Can I really be considered a friend of hers? I honestly don't know anything about her... even the stuff she tells me, I'm not sure if it's true. She's nice and she's charming a lot of the time... but I don't know if I can really call her my friend."

"I see..." Akihito mutters, scribbling something down in his notepad. From the look on his face, you can tell that he's disappointed. "Well Kazuma, I'm glad to have a clear answer on the matter from you. Still... I feel that you and Io are two of a same kind in many ways."

"Why, because we both go to therapy?" you ask. "That's not a basis for a friendship."

"I'm certain that's not what she sees as the basis of friendship," Akihito replies. "But to say more would be inappropriate. I'm sworn to uphold confidentiality with my students. Still, I feel you may be slightly dishonest to yourself."

"What are you talking about?" you reply. "I'm telling the truth. I don't really know her."

"Perhaps," Akihito replies. "But I feel you're undervaluing her importance to you. Underselling the friendships you have, it will only make you more afraid to turn to them for support. But I feel that's enough on that subject for now. I wanted to talk a bit about your time in grade school..."

You continue to talk with Akihito until the clock strikes the time to take off. You thank Akihito for his time, and you step out into the school hallways. Dammit, having that long session really racked up the text messages.

>From: Io
>Hey. I'm sorry for getting angry with you earlier. I was very excited about opening up shop again, and when you questioned me like that... it stung. That's all. But you had every right to be suspicious of me, so I don't hold it against you. I shouldn't have flown of the handle like that. I should have just told you the truth and enjoyed that breakfast with my best friend. I really hope you liked it... maybe later in the week, I can introduce you to my sister. A sort of apology for never telling you about her. We'll all eat at that ramen place in town you like... I'm still in bed, I think I'm just going to take it easy today. Heh, even in text, I ramble... must have been a pain to scroll through all this... anyway! I just want you to know that I'm sorry, I'm not mad at you, and I hope you have a great day!

No emoticons, no text kisses at the end... it's a much more serious text coming from this girl you barely know...

>Meet with Risa

If Risa's asking for help, it must be something that means a lot to her. Besides, you haven't heard at all from her since everything about her father and her past were revealed to the class... she's been outright reclusive for the most part. First of all though, you send a message back to Io.

>To: Io
> It's cool, I'm a social dumbass anyway. I worded it super wrong, regardless. You stay chill, we'll hang out later, meeting your sister sounds cool. Betcha she's got a ton of embarrassing stories! Peace.

You smile, looking forward to the prospect of actually learning a little more about Io, before making your way down the hallway. As you do, you are approached by the sporty pair, carrying a cowboy hat with a steaming bullet hole through it.

"We... we took the hat," Ukon mutters, pale in the face. "C-challenge completed!"

"Yaaay," Mai pumps her fist, but is equally shaking in fear.

"Did... did he fire on you guys?" you ask.

"It was a knee jerk reaction," Ukon explains. "I think it was just a warning shot, though... if it wasn't, we wouldn't be standing here."

"Okay..." you grimace, feeling bad that you sent them on such a challenge. "Have you covered any of the others?"

"We approached Roka with a deck of cards," Mai explains. "But before we could challenge him, he slapped them out of our hands and moved on!"

"Huh..." you mutter. "Okay, here's a new second challenge for you. Go to the nurse's office. Kuin's getting her blood test, and is afraid of needles. Go give her moral support!"

Ukon gives a salute. "You got it captain! We'll rise up to the challenge!"

"Onward!" Mai yells as the two charge down the hall.

With a sigh, you make your way out into the courtyard, where you see Risa pacing nervously back and forth, holding what appears to be a boxed lunch.

"Hey."

"Hey..." Risa mutters, her eyes darting in every direction. "Kaz, I feel like you'd be the most honest. I've got a question."

"Shoot."

"Knowing everything that my dad did..." she mutters. "Do you... think any less of me?"

"Huh?"

Risa lets out a forlorn sigh. "I knew he couldn't have been the perfect guy... he was the general of an invading force, I wasn't blind... I just never knew how bad he was back then... maybe how bad he still is... but ever since Gado told his story, I can't help but feel like I've been getting more stares in the hallway. Judging stares... maybe I'm just imagining it... but I know you'll be honest. Do you think of me any differently knowing what my dad's done?"

>Not at all. You didn't even know.
>A little... but it's just shock. It'll wear off.
>It's hard not to picture your dad when we talk now.

>Not at all. You didn't even know.

"Yeah?" Risa asks.

You nod. "Come on, I'm not going to judge you for something your family did, that you weren't even aware of. No matter how terrible it was, you didn't do it, so why would I act like you did?"

Risa takes a deep breath. "Thanks... I just hope most people in the school feel the same you do. I know Gado never held it against me... or at least, he's never given it away. But I wish I could say the same for everyone in the class..."

Risa holds up the boxed lunch and stares at it. "Kaz, I'm going to do something pretty stupid... but it's something I have to try."

"And what's that?"

"Just... follow me," Risa sighs, as she begins to walk off... in the direction of Ninsei's garden. Oh boy, you can see why she wanted the support, this could get messy.

You enter through the clearing of trees in the courtyard, stopping just short of knocking over a tall flower plant as you arrive in Ninsei's garden, where he is simply watering some of his crops and drinking milk as usual. He turns around, and glares as soon as he sees Risa.

"Uhh... hi-"

"Get the hell away from me," Ninsei scowls. "This is my garden. You're not welcome here."

"Look, I get it. You hate me," Risa explains. "But... I don't really hate you. Not at all. So... I made a little peace offering."

Risa holds out the boxed lunch in front of Ninsei, offering it up to him as a gift.

"Lunch? Are you serious?"

"I know it's not much," Risa admits. "But I thought it would be a good start towards building this bridge and-"

"Oh, fantastic," Ninsei rolls his eyes. "Genius idea. Hey, sorry my dad brutally massacred your parents and almost genocided your people, I made lunch! Holy crap, you're a regular peacemaker! They should let you speak in the United Nations."

"Okay, I get it. It wasn't that good of a-"

Ninsei scoffs. "All my problems are solved now, because from heaven above comes this angel with a gift of the gods; a smaller than average boxed lunch!"

Ninsei grabs the boxed lunch and tosses it as far as he can, prompting Risa to pouts.

"Hey! You jerk! I spent all last night working on that!"

"Oh, the tremendous effort you went through!" Ninsei sarcastically remarks. "Oh, I couldn't imagine having your patience! Least of all with the carrots I spent the last two months growing, that you're currently stepping on!"

Risa hops from her position, scratching the back of her head awkwardly. "Look, I just want to make peace-"

"There's no peace to be made," Ninsei interrupts. "Look, I know that you're used to boys liking you and bending to your whim because you know how to wear a short skirt and bat your eyelashes, but I'm not going to fall for your tricks. You honestly expect me to believe that you didn't know what your father, the notorious war criminal, was up to? Give me a break. You knew. You just ignored it, or maybe you were raised to think his victims deserved it. Either way, I don't care, and if I never see your face again around here, I'll be all too happy. Now scram."

>Hey, go easy on her. She's trying to be nice.

>You know what, Risa? This guy doesn't deserve your attention.

Risa shakes her head. "No Kaz... yes he does."

"Are you kidding?" you ask. "Come on, he's a jerk."

"He's just sad. Isn't that right, Ninsei?"

"Screw you."

"See?" Risa points out. "He's upset and angry, and people like that do deserve attention. Ninsei, you're a little ball of anger, but I'm going to nuture the hell out of it, because I really want to make amends for what my father did to your parents."

"And I really want you to go away," Ninsei replies. "How about you make amends by giving me what I want?"

Ninsei turns away and begins to ignore you and Risa, getting down on his hands and knees as he begins to tend to some of his crops.

"Come on, let's just go," you mutter. "He's wasting your time."

"No..." Risa replies. "I'm not giving up that easy."

Risa makes her way over to Ninsei, sitting down in the soil next to him. Ninsei silently glares, then moves on the the next patch. Risa shuffles along to join him by his side. "Come on," Risa mutters. "I very, very sorry for everything that happened to you, Ninsei. It was horrible, and never should have happened. I just want to do the best I can to help you. The least we can do is have a normal conversation to start. For example... what are you most afraid of? I'd like to learn that about you."

Ninsei glares once more, before picking himself up and dusting himself off. "I'm going back to the dorms."

"Cool, I'll join!" Risa smiles.

"No!" Ninsei snaps. "Ugh... you're going to follow me everywhere, aren't you?"

"You're hiding away from the world out here," Risa replies. "I really think you should open up to someone."

Ninsei glares at her, before shaking his head. "Fine... if it makes you go away..."

Ninsei sits down, facing Risa on the ground. "I'm most afraid of crows."

"Crows?" Risa asks.

"Yeah, nasty creatures," Ninsei replies. "Aren't you uncomfortable sitting there?"

"Eh, too little too late," Risa chuckles. "I already have soil all over my butt now."

Ninsei shuts his eyes. "Just another one of your tricks... just trying to make me visualise it."

"No, I'm genuine!" Risa smiles. "Come on... what was your brother like growing up?"

"Different."

"Different how?"

As Risa and Ninsei continue to talk, you take that as your cue to leave. Heh... you should have figured Risa would have managed to get a real conversation out of the brooding guy through her sheer stubbornness. Pretty impressive, she might be able to make things right with him just yet. You pull out your phone and check your messages.

>Meet with Akuro

You know that Akuro's been having a very hard time fitting in as a part of the school, not to mention being grilled by her superiors like she has been so far. She probably could use a little support. You make your way to the dormitory building, where you find Akuro sitting outside, accompanied by Agent Blue. He head is hanging low, but her fellow agent appears to be patting her back.

"I just don't know what I'm doing anymore..." Akuro sighs. "My brother, these powers, this school... I can't handle it."

"Sure you can kid," Blue smiles. "Look, when I first saw you during your application tests, I didn't pay attention to all the guys scoffing and laughing at the little girl who wandered in off the street, because that's not what I saw. I saw someone with determination, with fire in her eyes... I saw someone who wanted to be the best damn agent there ever was, and nothing could stop her. And in that exam, what did you do?"

"I broke every record."

"Every single damn one," Blue laughs. "You were amazing, and you still are. Just because these other kid's don't like you, doesn't mean you gotta care. It means nothing, and you've still got the brightest future ahead as an agent. Plus, I'd say you'll be able to find a cute girl to settle down with within the next five years."

"Is that before or after you and Green tie the knot?" Akuro teases.

"Heh, come on A. He's already my work wife. Now, I gotta get going. Good luck now."

Blue wanders off, as Akuro turns to face you. "Hey."

"Hey."

"Thanks..." Akuro sighs. "For the performance review. I'm glad you could be honest."

>I hope you take the criticism on-board.

"Yeah... I'm gonna try," Akuro sighs. "I mean... clearly I've got a lot to work on. White isn't happy with how I've integrated so far. And so..."

Akuro holds up a suitcase as she gives a small frown.

"You're moving into the dorms?"

"Yep. White decided it would be a good idea to bring out some more camaraderie and become more of an official class member, so he placed me in with the one girl in class who doesn't already have a roommate."

"Huh, isn't that Anri?" you ask.

Akuro stares at you, unamused. "Yeah... it is. This is going to be painful, without a doubt. You mind joining me for this?"

"Sure," you nod, as you follow her up the steps and into the dormitory.

As she arrives at the door to her new room, Akuro gives it a small knock. "Hey detective, it's me. I'm living here now."

"Excuse me?" asks Anri's voice coming through the wall.

"I'm taking that as invitation to come inside," Akuro remarks as she turns the handle. "Say hello to your new roomie in 3... 2..."

"Wait, you mustn't come in here, not yet!" Anri calls out, but it's too late, as Akuro swings the door open, to reveal Anri scrambling around the room, countless papers bunched up and covering her entire body as she tries to pick up as many of the files and reports littering the floor and walls of the room as possible.

"Wow, paranoid much?" Akuro laughs. "I'm not going to try and steal your crummy independent research when I have actual government research backing me... wait... are you...?"

It's then that you notice the patches of bare flesh revealed slightly amongst the paper, and you realise that Anri isn't trying to hide her research... she's trying to cover up her own nude body.

"G-Gado said he'd be coming by as soon as he tucks Kuin into bed," Anri explains. "I wanted to surprise him."

"Nemoto, the big guy?" Akuro chuckles. "He's your boyfriend now?"

"Well, the idea of a monogamous-"

"Boyfriend, got it," Akuro smiles. "Anyway, I call the top bunk."

"But... I already had the top bunk..."

"Ah, but did you call it?" Akuro asks. "Checkmate! By the way... you know there's a mirror behind you, right?"

Anri turns a bright shade of red, as she realises that due to the bedside mirror, little was done to conceal her backside.

"Don't get shy," Akuro teases. "Most girls would be jealous of you for those buns!"

"We did it!" Mai leaps into the air with a raised fist. "We helped calm Kuin down so that her blood test can be taken!"

"Huh, how'd you manage that?" you ask.

"Well, I am an excellent motivational speaker!" Mai laughs. "Don't forget, I was Hanako's running mate in the battle for Class President!"

"You were?"

"You were told not to forget!" Ukon exclaims. "And how can you not remember? The race for class president was insane, filled with all sort of hilarious mishaps and misunderstandings!"

"To be honest, I zoned out for most of the first semester," you explain. "How'd the third challenge go?"

"Yes!" Mai jumps into the air in celebration. "We did it! We did it!"

Both of them stand and give you a salute, like the two of them were loyal soldiers. Ukon beams proudly as he speaks. "Thank you, Kaz! Thank you!"

"I swear, we won't let you down!" Mai adds. "If you tell us to jump, we'll say 'how high'? If you tell me to do a million laps, I'll do a million and one! If you-"

"Okay, tone it down a little," you sigh. "It's just a club."

"Oh... got a little excited there, didn't we?" Mai laughs. "Still, we'll make you proud! Come on, Ukon! Let's start training with some classic exercises!"

The run off as you let out a sigh, before moving to the common room, where you see that Io is up and about again. Across from her is Roka, who seems to have dropped money on a classic cup and ball trick.

"So, if you can follow the cup with the ball under it and pick it out when I finish shuffling, I'll give you double your bet!" Io explains. "Actually, I'm going to do you one better! You drop a little more on the bet, and I'll actually up your odds! You have to pick one of the two cups that doesn't have the ball in it, doubling your chances of winning your money back!"

"Alright, you're on!" Roka yells, slamming money on the table, as Io begins to shuffle. Io finishes and Roka picks out a cup, which Io lifts to reveal a small ball underneath. Angry at losing his money, Roka overturns the table and storms off to his room like a pissed off gorilla.

"There was a ball under all of them," Io explains. "Classic sleight of hand. I think this is enough yen for a nice Christmas gift for Alice!"

Io calmly shakes her head. "I'd rather not teach you."

"Huh? Why?"

"Because you're honest Kaz," Io explains. "For better or worse, you're an honest person. It's one of the big reasons why I like you. And I don't want to corrupt that."

"Corrupt?" you sigh. "Come on, you make it sound so morbid."

"I mean, let's face it. I can be morally dubious at the best of times," Io smirks as she adjusts her hair. "I just don't want to be a bad influence on you."

"And here I thought I was the bad influence," you chuckle. "So... your sister..."

"You're gonna love her," Io laughs. "She's a real blast. Always quick with a joke or an anecdote. And boy, the embarrassing stories she has of me from when I was a kid... heh, I might have to ask her to reign it in a little."

"Are you... close with your sister?" you ask.

"Yeah..." Io smiles, before staring off a little into the distance. "I mean... I was. We kinda drifted apart after..."

"After what?" you ask.

"After my dad died."

"Oh... I'm sorry."

"It's okay. It was a few years ago," Io replies. "It's not something I tend to dwell on."

"Well... if you ever need to talk about it, I'm right here."

"Thanks..." Io smiles, before a thought pops into her head. "Kaz... this might sound weird to say, but... if I ever try to kiss you, tell me to stop."

"Huh?" you raise an eyebrow. "What brought this on?"

Io sighs. "I know I flirt a lot and call you cutie and everything... but I value our friendship, and I don't want to do anything to ruin it. Besides, look at us. Do you think either of us would be ready for something like that?"

"I don't care what you trust her with!" Ninsei exclaims. "Fact of the matter is that these two are the only ones who haven't been tested yet! Everyone else has! One of us has to be the demon, so it's one of them!"

"This is foolish," Mayu mutters. "Do not point a finger in my face, or I will break it off."

"Classic line from Miss Cold and mysterious!" Ninsei remarks. "You know, you always had the look of a demon to me! And you... you lived here your whole life? Seems a mighty convenient alibi, if you ask me."

"Stop it!" Io yells in anger. "Leave them alone!"

Ninsei raises an eyebrow. "What do you care? This doesn't concern you. Go back to conning people."

"It does concern me!" Io remarks, as she tears the band-aid from her arm. "I haven't been tested either yet!"

"Well, then our list of suspects is up to three!" Ninsei yells. "I should have figured it could be the liar. I always thought your bullcrap could have been a demon thing. So... which one of you is it?"

>Io, why did you have to lie...?

Ninsei grunts and grimaces, before letting out a defeated sigh. "Fine... I suppose you're right. But the three of you are due for your tests next! And I'm going to be keeping a close eye on you. If one of you really are the demon in disguise, I want to be there in case you try anything!"

"Not a bad idea, honestly..." Risa mutters. "I mean, I trust you guys, but on the off chance that some demon shenanigans do take place... we might want everyone to be there in case things kick off."

"And to be there for moral support!" Kiriko adds. "I mean, it's been a stressful day, and I don't know about you, but I want to be there for my friends, and to be able to celebrate the moment all three of them come up clear!"

"If that happens..." Ninsei mutters.

Before you know it, the whole class are following the three left to be tested into the main school building and up to the nurse's room. Everyone crowds by the door, as the three step up to get tested, one at a time. Starting with Chuichi, who takes a seat by nurse Tekina.

"You know... this is kinda intimidating..." Io remarks. "I gotta admit, I'm scared. Mayu... how are you feeling?"

"Petrified," Mayu replies in her cold manner.

The needle jabs into Chuichi's arm, and draws out the blood from his veins, which Tekina quickly inspects.

"Red!" Tekina announces. "You're free to go!"

Chuichi stands up and breathes a sigh of relief, making his way to the back.

"Oh... I guess I should-"

"No, I'm next," Mayu interrupts Io, as she sits down in the chair. Io is biting her nails as the blood is drawn from Mayu.

"Red!" Tekina announces.

A deathly silence befalls the room.

"Which only leaves one person..." Risa remarks.

Io squirms.

"The one who lied about being tested earlier," Gado adds.

Io squirms some more.

"That... that snake!" Risa protests. "I... I knew I could never trust her!"

Io bites her bottom lip, just about ready to collapse to the floor in a bundle of nerves as she turns to you. No... this can't be right... not her...

"Should have been obvious from the start," Ninsei remarks. "Who's ever been able to trust her. All she's ever done is scam people."

"I just thought she was greedy, not..." Hanako mutters to herself.

"I had hope the history of deceit was just that... a history," Anri sighs. "But things aren't looking good right now."

"I... I..." Io mumbles, frantically looking towards the blocked-off exit.

"Maybe she had no idea until now..." Akuro remarks. "Wasn't that the case with that class 2 boy?"

"Yeah... so maybe Io's not at fault!" Kiriko tries to look on the bright side. "Right, Io? Right?"

"I... s-scared," Io shakes.

"Forget it, pesky fly," Roka mutters. "There's no way she wouldn't have known until now! She's been hiding it from us!"

"That makes me so freaking mad!" Sae yells. "That's it! You're in for a pounding!"

>Nobody's touching Io! They'd have to go through me!

You step in front of Io, shielding her from the rest of the group.

"K-Kaz..." she mutters, as you look back at her. "I'm scared..."

"It's okay," you smile, before turning back to the group. "Nobody is doing anything until we know for sure! Io could be completely innocent, and I'm not going to let any of you people harm her!"

"Come on, she's the only one left!" Ninsei protests. "Are you really going to defend your girlfriend this much?"

"We should still seek confirmation," Anri explains. "It would be wrong to take action otherwise."

"Sit down Io," you say, as Io hesitantly nods, taking the seat as Tekina prepares her syringe. You hunker down to a knee and cup her left hand between yours to comfort her as she shakes. Staring at her... that look in her face... that hesitance... could it really be? No, she couldn't. She... she wouldn't lie to you about this. She would lie over a million other things... but not this! Maybe she didn't know she was possessed... or perhaps she's been tricking you this whole time? Maybe Io really is just a girl you don't really know? A girl who has been lying to you and manipulating you all this time as part of some grander scheme? Did it only take a bat of the eyelids or a sweet compliment to bring you back to her side every single time? Is Io even real? You don't know what to believe... but you do know that no matter how much you look into her frightened eyes, how much you clutch her hand, no matter how much you try to care for her and be her friend... you don't trust Io at all, and you're not sure if you ever will.

The needle as drawn blood. Here it comes... the moment of truth...

"Red!" Tekina announces. "You're clear!"

"I... I am?" Io asks, before breathing the heaviest sigh of relief. "W-wow... talk about scary!"

"But... wait, I thought Io was the last one to be tested?" Kiriko asks.

"She was!" Tekina explains, holding up her list. "I've tested everyone in school, and they all came up clear!"

"That can't be right..." Anri mutters, taking the registry for herself and flicking through it. "There has to be... something... a-ha. This list is missing two people."

"Huh?" Tekina raises an eyebrow. "Who?"

"Taiyo Izumi and Tsuki Takudo," Anri mentions. "I just noted that neither of them are here, either..."

"I'm sorry," Tekina asks. "Those aren't any students I recognise."

"What are you talking about?" you ask. "Taiyo and Tsuki? They're in our class! They share a dorm! Taiyo's a quiet blonde guy who loves animals, Tsuki is... a dick?"

"I'm afraid I don't understand the joke," Tekina mutters. "But I memorise the names of every single student that comes through her, and those have never been the name of students."

"What, so... they didn't go here?" Io asks. "That... doesn't make sense. We all remember them... they're classmates!"

This isn't right... this isn't right at all. Is this the case with the entire faculty? None of them were even aware of Tsuki or Taiyo's existence?

You and Anri rush back to the dorms, with the rest of the group following in tow. You arrive at Taiyo and Tsuki's dorm room and... no... no, hang on...

"There was definitely a room here before!" you exclaim. "R-right?"

Anri nods. "Yes... I remember it too. And yet now... it's nothing but brick wall. Where once there was a full room... now there is nothing. This is... confusing, I don't understand..."

"Remember at the festival?" Amaya mentions. "During the group dating, Sayeka Ohko met Taiyo... and he was immune to her future vision! If the Archdemon was able to cloak itself... does that mean..."

"I think you're right..." Anri gasps. "My god... it was them."

"What?"

"It wasn't just one..." Anri clenches her fist in realisation. "It was the both of them. And now... they're on the run."

Great thread Booker. New squad members is always good! And the Io fan in me loves the arc this episode covered. I look forward to the rest of the cast as they interact with the three accused parties. Ninsei and Risa also look promising. And Anri now has a new nickname for me!

>PQ
Allow me to take a rather novel approach. I don't know if these guys are both darkworlders. I could also see these guys as an archdemon and archangel fighting against each other on this plane and havung fought on Rubi and Safia.

Alternatively, they are rivals in the darkworld who also happen to be from Rubi and Safia, trying to duke it out for their own claim on our world. Using those two nations as pieces. If you will.

Really hope the end credits scene is Mai and Ukon's attempts on those challenges!

Finally for the thread. What do you think Mai and Ukon have? I am going with Trident and Sword and Bword respectively.

>Bonus Scene

Earlier that day, Mai and Ukon were finding themselves in somewhat of a pickle. Both very excited to join the group that all anyone in Class 1 can talk about, Kazuma's club, and club that is constantly adding new members... and they want to be next in that conversation. However, there is one roadblock in their way... well, three roadblocks. Three mystical challenges (Mai dubbed them mystical, though there was zero mysticism actually involved). The first of these trials may just have been the most daunting; to take the hat of Maro Kojima, head of class 3. The remaining members of Class 3 are among the elite fighters in the entire world, and Maro has a claim to the title among the most dangerous human beings on the planet. Also... they can't find him. Somehow, this has been the biggest impediment to their mission thus far.

"Think, Ukon!" Mai exclaims. "We just need to think like Maro in order to find him!"

"Okay... okay..." Ukon replies, rubbing his temples. "Grr... I'm super serious... I'm ignoring my nice girlfriend... ooh, I think I know where he is!"

Surprised that their tactic apprarently worked, Mai follows Ukon as he rushes into a forest clearing, where they find another schoolmate hiding out, performing target practice on targets that appear to have been pinned up on the trees.

"There, I found him!" Ukon exclaims.

"Wait... I don't think that's Maro..." Mai scratches her chin in thought. "I mean, I've only ever seen him twice before... but didn't he used to be taller?"

"But the essentials are all there!" Ukon explains. "Black hair, black clothes, guns... and I was thinking like Maro!"

"But he's not wearing a hat..." Mai mutters. "Hmm... maybe we should just ask him. Hey, Maro!"

The schoolmate turns around and raises an eyebrow, causing Mai to gasp. "He turned around! That means it's Maro! We found him!"

"I'm not Maro," the schoolmate calls out.

"Oh..." Ukon sighs. "Wait... then who are you?"

The boy stares broodingly at the two of the, raising his face so that they can see his scars. "I am Raiden."

"Oh... who's that?"

"Raiden...?" he replies. "Raiden Yoi? Are you telling me you've never heard of me?"

Mai and Ukon look to each-other, then shrug.

"You're joking?" Raiden raises an eyebrow. "I thought myself infamous for what I've done. Dark, terrible things. Many consider me a monster for my horrendous acts in the quest for vengeance for my lost-"

"Nope, never heard of you!" Mai smiles.

"Oh..." Raiden scowls. "Damn freshmen... don't know anything..."

"Well, we were looking for the leader of class 3," Ukon explains. "But you're pretty interesting! How did you get those scars?"

"Class 3 gave them to me."

"Oh..." Ukon quiets down.

Mai bounces up and down, excited by the many questions she has to ask. "Why are you hiding out here? Are you on the run from the law? Are you a hermit, banished by the rest of the school?"

"No," Raiden sighs. "I'm training."

"Oh... for what?"

"None of your business."

"Aww, come on! Pretty please?" Mai bats her eyes.

Raiden shakes his head. "Fine... if you must know, I'm training in order to take part in my greatest challenge... and to commit my greatest sin..."

"Hmm..." Mai pauses. "You sound sad!"

"I am sad, thank you for the reminder."

"Well, that's no good!" Ukon replies.

"Yeah!" Mai concurs. "You know what you should do when you're sad?"

Raiden's eyes widen. "Why do I have the sinking feeling you're going to say 'sing a-"

"Sing a song!" Mai exclaims. "Iiiiiif yooooooou've got a soooooooon in your HEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAART!"

"Gah!" Raiden recoils in pain. "You sound like nails on a chalkboard. A chalkboard possessed by a thousand screaming spirits, to boot."

"Aw, look at this grumpy-boots!" Mai smiles. "You know what? We're gonna help cheer you up!"

"Didn't you have something else to do?" Raiden asks.

"We've already forgotten what that is!" Ukon laughs. "Come on, let's have fun! You wanna play basketball? Do ya, do ya, do ya?"

"Or we could take part in Karaoke!" Mai adds.

Raiden clutches his skull. "Oh god... I'm surrounded by Akemi's... I really can't escape her..."

"Who's Akemi?" Mai asks.

"She's my..." Raiden Begins. "... No-one. It doesn't matter. Just leave me alone."

"You hear that?" Ukon smirks. "He said, leave him alone!"

"Yes. Now do that."

"We know what that's code for!" Mai beams. "'Leave me alone' is always code for 'I dare you to put a smile on my face'!"

"No, it's code for I will shoot you," Raiden grimaces.

But it's already too late for Raiden. Once Mai and Ukon get latched onto a target, there's nothing that can stop them. Raiden suffers through almost an hour of their company, including getting hit in the face with three different sports balls, and listening to at least five different renditions of songs he won't be able to hear again with reaching for his gun on impulse, but eventually the pair remember that they were in the middle of something, and take off, leaving him alone to his training. By the end though, he's smiling. Those two reminded him of something very important he had... and if all goes well, something he'll never have again.
