'- and even Esmerelda has grown, not to mention Jin, Nin and Sheszka. Compared to them, I have barely changed at all.

Much Love,

Lyra'

You wipe the sweat beading across your forehead as you consider the work of art on the table before you. Your words dance around sybjects on the page with more elegance than you've ever managed on the battlefield.

You nod cautiously to yourself.

This will be enough, right? There isn't a false word in the entire letter. Ezzy's size is something else entirely now, and Jin and Sheszka have both changed shapes. Compared to you- An extra horn on your rear skull, and a bit of difference to your chitin, you've barely changed at all.

You didn't forget anything, either- The meeting with the Duke and the dungeon are both in there. You just... glossed over a few parts.
Like the dungeon boss, and the men from the empire, and the earthquake, and the whole arena thing. And the gryphon.

But those are all- Yes, they are all definitely small things, right?
The letter is perfect.

You blow on the last of the ink to help it dry, watching the glossiness of the liquid fade to a matte black before you carefully fold your letter.

With this, you're safe.

You don't want to think of what would happen if your mother were to arrive in town without any word from you.

Well, with this settled, there's still stuff that needs doing, right?

You roll your shoulders to dispell the cramping muscles of a day spent hovering over a table in the guild.
What else is there- Ah, there's the temples, of course. You still have to visit at some point, if only to give your thanks.

And there's all the usual busywork. Equipment maintenance. A bath, maybe. You've been neglecting your laundry, it's true.
And you have to start planning your trip! You can't just jump on a ship and set sail-

Well, you probably could. But you're fairly certain that's considered piracy?
No, what's the word?
Hijacking?

There was a specific one for ships, you think.

And!
And there's Ezzy, too. You can't just leave her in your rushed attempt to stop her from running around naked.
She'll need proper clothes, and that'll take time.

There's so many things to do!

You stand, ready to set off, only to find yourself strangely weighed down.

You turn your head, unsure just what could be restraining you of all things, and come face to face with an innocuous bundle of folded pages.
Of- Of course you were going to mail it. You'll definitely mail it.

Right away. Sure.

You start to skitter your way to the front desk, clutching the letter in both hands, worrying at it with your thumbs.
Ren is back from whatever errands she's required to run, and looks up as you approach.

"Hello, yes."
"Are you alright?"
"Yes. Of course. Yes. I need to mail something."

The secretary lays her clipboard on the desk, and gives you her full attention.

"Something?"
"A letter, yes?"
"Oh?"
"This letter."

She gives you a questioning look as she moves to accept the bundle. The kind of look that says 'You don't have any other letters.'
You're distracted from your reverie by a gentle tugging.

"Lyra."
"Hmm?"
"Lyra."
"Yes?"

"You need to let go of the letter, Lyra."

You look down, lips pursed, as you consider your deathgrip on the paper.
You haven't got the right anatomy to have a white-knuckled hold on anything, but it feels like an appropriate explanation in any case.

"Yes."
"So?"
"Yes?"
"You have to let go."

You nod again, the first hints of sweat starting to form at your neck.
"I am trying, yes."
"Right. Who's it for? The letter. Who is the letter for?"
"My mother, yes."
"And what is her name?"

"Nia. Nialla. Or Erics. Maybe Erics would be better."
"Your mother's name is Erics?"
"My father's name is Erics."
"You want to send it to your father instead?"
"They will be together anyways, yes."

"So, where are we sending it to?"
"I don't know. The guilds?"
"Ah. Adventurer service, then. Alright. Oh, Behind you."
"Hmm?"

You turn, but the only thing behind you is the gently snoring forms of your friends.
Your fingers click together emptily, and you turn back to Ren, betrayal written all over your face.
>>
>>959152

"1 Letter, 2 pages. Nialla, Arachne, Adventurer. Guild Affiliated. No problems. She'll get it."
"That- That is good, yes."
"Mhm. Was there anything else?"
"Where can I book a boat? A fast boat."
"Docks pretty much ring the city. You'll probably need a bigger one for yourself. Shipping boat maybe. They usually keep the rooms onboard small."
"I will keep it in mind, yes. Thanks."

You make for the stairs, picking each step carefully.

You sit idly in your room, staring intently at the wall with a dazed smile on your face.
There you go. Mail sent! Good job, Lyra!
You nod to the particular grain you've focussed on for the last ten minutes before you turn your attention to something immediate and distracting.
Anything.

Clothes. Ezzy Clothes. Snake clothes.

Your fingers move absentmindedly as sheets of silk form in front of you. Pieces are cut and measured against a sleeping snake, and in almost no time at all you have a cozy looking sweater and a matching... Well, if pants only had one leg hole. A matching tube, you guess. The sweater is a little thick, layered double with your silk, ready for the coming season.

You set it to one side, and consider the issue of Snake underwear.

You spend an hour on the concept before you surrender.
You aren't Elle, that's for certain.

You work isn't unwearable, or anything. It isn't like your previous errors of knitting your hands together.
And some people would probably approve.

Puritans, maybe. Or people who've taken lifelong vows of celibacy.

It's just a sock, really. Maybe she can use it for a sleeping bag.

You set it off to the side and set your mind to making something more practical.

You start with thicker silk again, this time with the intention of protection and padding, leaving space for plates and armour to be affixed overtop of it.
It's something similar to an arming coat, with a matching pant leg. You've got some metal somewhere, you're sure.
She'll need a new weapon at the bare minimum.

You briefly consider the ethics of changing her clothes now, but it can wait till she's awake, you're sure.

The sun is setting over the city again, and you watch the rays of red vanishing over the wall before you head to your nest of sheets and blankets.

Who says we can't? First spear was our promise to protect our friends, second spear can be its darker twin, a vow to destroy anyone or anything that would bring them harm.
>>
>>959233
I'm desperately hoping the second one comes pre-named. It's dwarven tradition! No, we don't need another thread entirely devolving into suggestions and whining with no plot.
>>
>>959233
Eh. I don't think the style of the spear would match with that sort of name. If we were gonna make one spear the dark side then it woulda been the dark veiny one.
>>
>>959233
Please no, we already have one spear named with that theme and that's enough. Plus we need to rename that particular spear once we actually accomplish something worthy with it.
>>
>>959283
I actually kind of like the idea; the spear earns its' own name.
>>
You've managed to get down something resembling a routine now-
Or rather, the rest of the guild has acquired a routine.

Specifically, once people hear your clicking steps coming down the stairs, the kitchen starts cooking.

To be honest, you're really appreciative of it.

So it doesn't take you long to get out and onto the street, what with the main time consumer of your morning of the way- Cooking, not eating.
Eating never slows you down.

The weather doesn't seem great today, murky clouds hanging low in the sky, the dim red of dawn casting ruddy light over the streets as you walk.
The air is cool, and you can feel the water gathering, damp air that's sure to make way for rain in short order.

You up your internal temperature by a few notches, casting a mild glow on the ground as you move, radiating warmth as you head for one of your few acquaintances in the city.

The door is shut on your arrival, and there's no lights beyond the windows- It is a bit early, you suppose. But that just gives you time to take care of your own half of the deal.

So you plant yourself next to the door, legs curling tight against yourself, and you start to spool a hefty amount of your metallic thread as you wait.

_________________________________________________________

The clouds are looking more ominous by the time the door swings open, and a yawning dwarf steps out into the street with a steaming cup of something.
He slurps noisily as he shifts from one foot to the other, cracking his neck and looking around.

"Good morning, yes."
"You're a bit early, lass."
"You don't seem surprised, though."
"Well, I did tell you to come back soon."

You nod along.
"I have brought the silk."
"Oh? How much is- That is a lot of silk."
"Is it?"
"It looks like a lot."
"I made it while I was waiting, yes. I woke up early, I think."

"An adventurer thing?"
"I think I am just bad at schedules."
"Right. I'd invite you in, but we had this problem the first time."
"Mhm. Wooden houses and spiders don't mix."
"Small doors and spiders don't mix."
"If they're stone or metal then I can make them big doors, yes."

"Refrain from adjusting anything I'm renting, please. I don't wanna haveta fork over a handful of gold for spider damage."
"Mhm."
"So you think I'm done, then?"
"You seemed liek someone who would work overnight if he got started."

The dwarf grimaces slightly, taking another long slurp of what you assume is tea.
It doesn't smell alcoholic, anyway.

"Well, it's- You're not wrong."
"Mhm. I finished mine, too."
"Yours?"
"My spear. With the blood steel."

"No problems with the red ore?"
"I bought extra, yes? To work with a bit before I started."
"A good attitude."
"I won't ruin my work with impatience."
>>
>>959469
"Did you bring it, then?"
"It is with wizards, yes. For enchanting."
"Ah. It turned out well, though?"
"I think I did well. It took a lot of blood."

"Y'gave it your own?"
"I heard it was better. I was very sleepy after. And I ate a lot."
"Hells. I won't lose though, lass."

You smile.

"I like the sound of that, yes."

He hoists a spool of your strange thread over his shoulder, grunting as he lifts, and heads back into the house.
You wait patiently on the cobblestones, watching the sky start to roil, distant thunder echoing through the cool air.

He returns a little while later, a spear far taller than him presented on heavy cloth, the off-silver colour gleaming even in the half-light of the coming storm.
He nods when you meet his eyes, and you reach for it, hefting the weapon easily in one hand.

You hold it out for a moment, parallel to your arm, then up, switching you grip and bringing the head to your eye level- You don't recognize the metal. Though, you suppose that isn't any sort of surprise, really. Your knowlege of geology is lacking in the first place, outside of earthquakes and magma.

And you don't really know the composition or cause of either of those outside of 'yourself' anyway.

"It's starsteel, lass."
"Startsteel? I don't remember that one, yes."
"Orihalcum. It'll be better for the stone, in any case."
"Ah."

The weapon is- It's sleek, that's for certain. It seems like an odd description for a spear, but it really isn't much like your current- or previous- weapons.

There's no crossguard to speak of- The shaft itself widens into the start of the blade. Maybe a foot and a half, maybe more? There's a perfect slot for your elemental stone, and a generous amount of perfectly polished space around it for the enchantment. The blade itself is etched in a simple pattern, one that doesn't seem to affect its razor sharp edge in any way.

The shaft it wrapped in leather in several places, and a sharpened weight marks the bottom of the weapon.
It feels good in your hands.

There's definitely a smile on your face.

"Glad you like it, Lass."

As much as I like gearing everyone up, would a smith be the best place? Nin, Ezzy, and Jin can't really be weighed down. Sheszka doesn't use heavy armor, and the dungeon gave claws. None of them really have a pressing need for better weapons; they use their natural abilities more often than not.

Shez really could use light armor though, her style of fighting seems to involve getting hit a lot. We could make something REALLY light for her out of silk, but I'm interested in the dwarf's idea of weaving our metal silk into chainmail. With a bit of elastic silk Lyra could actually make a suit of light armor for Shez that could stretch when she transforms her size.

"Thank you, yes?"
"Business, lass. Business." He replies gruffly.

"You worked hard all the same, yes. Thanks."
He grunts, mild embarassment written on his face, and you say your goodbyes.

Your legs sweep out as you stand, the click of each joint echoing as you stand tall once more. There's probably time before any rain starts- You can make your way to the tower again, and they can start work on this spear as well. You'll just have to figure out what you want done.

That's-
Well, it's not easy.
But it's just a choice, right?

How much time or effort could a choice take?

The streets are emptying, even in the busier sections of town, as the weather darkens.
You glance at the sky, the gathering storm, and you pick up your pace, clattering over stones as you haead to your destination.

The door opens quickly when you knock on it, a different apprentice manning the door this time around.

"Hello, yes."
"Oh. Good Afternoon."
"I would like to purchase enchanting services, yes. I have an elemental stone."
"Of course, er, miss. I'll fetch one of the elders."

You're shown to a room and seated this time-
Apparently repeat customers are treated a great deal differently.

Well, you suppose there's a difference between showing up with weapons, and showing up with weapons and tons of money.

"This is the weapon, then?"
"That's right, yes."
"Do you mind if we inquire as to the metal? It helps with the process."

You nod.
"It is orihalcum, yes. And the stone I have is a storm stone."
"A storm stone?"

You pull the crystal in question from your bag. It wasn't particularly hard to remove it from the spear, but it still seemed a bit sad to you.

"Ah- This is rather high quality."
"I was told, yes. I used it in an older weapon as well, but- The, ah, previous enchanter wasn't very experienced."
"May I ask what they had done?"
"It could shoot lightning, yes. But only a few times a day."
"That's not too bad, as far as amateurs go. They were a mage with some experience with lightning then?"
"Yes."
>>
>>959833

The older man nods along, his short cropped beard a counterpoint to the long moustache that waves about with the movement.
"In any case- The base materials are of a particularly high quality, so there won't be any difficulty in imbuing it with something worthwhile."
"I don't know much about it, yes? What kinds of things can you do with the stone and spear?"

He clears his throat.
"Of course, we can duplicate what you had before- With far more uses, and a higher degree of power. We can use the other types of power in the stone as well- Working with wind, or to a lesser degree, water is possible."
"Do you have any examples?"
"Hmm. You could have the edge lined with power- a blade of magic. Adding the crystal would add the element to it. It would also be a simple matter to add something permanent to the blade itself- The effects would have any real range, but the blade could shock your opponents, or smash them away with winds. If there's anything you can think of as well?"

Well a storm is basically hot air and cold air colliding, causing electron build up for lightning and releasing water from condensation.

As such, maybe have the spear tip generate a sheen of water which can be fired off in an arc via a air blast, and then electricity ran through the entire ensemble when it hits a target?

The range might be lower, but the multitude of elements working together should draw the most power out of the stone at any one time.

so, do we want to stay with the thunderbolt, or try like a returning weapon or wind blades as people suggest?
>>
>>959902
I know, but we had that with our old spear and we didn't use it so much, and the whole 'throwing spear' alternative has been pretty popular ever since it was mentioned and this is an excellent chance to try it out.
>>
>>959934
>or try like a returning weapon
I personally feel this would work the best, since it seems like it would scale better with our own strength than a lightningbolt.
>>
>>959931
Hm, point.
>>
>>959943
This, very much this
>>
>>959934
Lighting. Preferably one that can switch between a large spread out blast for AOE coverage, and a highly concentrated and powerful single bolt for anti-boss.
>>
>>959934
I kinda like the returning thing, partly because of our strength, partly for the reusablity of it compared to X bolts per day, and also because it opens up some sneaky shit like missing an enemy on purpose only for the returning spear to fly into their back just as we charge from the front with our other weapon.
>>
>>959934
We rarely are in fights that require tactical thinking on our part. Something that can be passively included in "Hit them with spear" will likely get us the most mileage out of this thing.
>>
>>960007
this isn't our hit them with the spear spear. That's the other one.
This one is for weird effects.
>>
>>960007
The whole point of the magical spear is to have a non-physical option to use in fights, against whatever foe of difficulty that can't be solved by physical means alone. If only physical attack are needed, that's what the red heavy one is for.
>>
>>960045
>The whole point of the magical spear is to have a non-physical option to use in fights
If it gives us a ranged option with elemental damage, then it already pretty much serves that purpose, imo. And a thrown-spear does that.
>>
>>960067
While also benefiting from our strength
>>
"I think something to extend the reach of the spear would be best, yes."
"Do you have something in mind?"
"I am not certain- There's the lightning, I know. My mother had a spear that could shoot blades of wind. Could you do that? Or the same with lightning?"
"With lightning, probably not. And with wind... It's not a simple enchantment by any means. You'd have limited uses for certain."

You consider it, humming.

"What about something I could throw? Is there something that could call it back to my hand?"
"Making it fly is certainly possible."
"And something like... Summoning? or teleporting? Or would flying back be the only option?"
"There's enchantments to summon things from specific places- Usually the wielders own bags. A way to draw a weapon as fast as possible. But teleportation isn't something we can do."

"You could make it so it could fly back to me though?"
"We'd have to enchant a second item for it to fly to- A glove, or a bracer."
"Would something simpler work? I do dont wear much armour on my arms, yes."
"Perhaps something that could be tied around your wrist then?"

"So throwing it is possible, then?"
"Certainly. We could concievably have it call... something like a copy of itself in lightning."
"And I could throw that?"
"Of course. We could also enchant the spear itself to turn into something like a lightning bolt when thrown, but-"
"But?"
"It would have to fly back, of course. Or be picked up."

"Maybe. Can I do anything with storms?"
"With storms?"
"Calling storms? Or calling lightning. If it was struck by lightning, would that help it?"
"It's possible. With the stone, it certainly wouldn't hurt it, I think. Calling storms, though... is a bit outside of our artifice."

What about having it strike itself with Lightning when its thrown into something?

Or create multiple lightning copies when in flight?

An Off/on Discharge of electricity from the spearhead would be good whether we throw it or not, maybe a shaped charge in the from of a blade, out of lightning?

"I think the throwing one is best, yes. The stone will not get stronger, but I will."
"Of course. The enchantment can truly show it's strength when it's used in a powerful manner."
"Mhm- And the returning enchantment? Would silk be a good material for it?"
"Silk? It's not particularly receptive to magic. Something more expensive would be best."

"Arachne silk?"
"Arachne- Ah. My apologies. It would be perfect."

Notes are taken, papers signed. Money passes hands.

"We'll have both of your weapons completed at the same time, I think- We'll send word once they're ready."
"That sounds good, yes. I have one more question, please."
"I'll answer whatever I can, miss."

You pull the sickle from your bag, watching as the mans eyes grow wider.

"I received this in the dungeon, yes?"
"That- Is it not his?"

You nod, placing it on the table with a gentle clink.
"Yes. Do you know what it is? What it does?"
"No. I don't believe it's come out of the dungeon before."
"Can you find out?"

"This- We'll do our utmost. No cost. It would be an honour to study something like this."

The rest of the meeting is short, and you find yourself outside and heading to the guild in no time at all, racing the coming storm.
