>Information

This quest takes place long before the events of The Last Airbender. Long before Aang, Roku, Kyoshi, Kuruk, or Yangchen. You play as a young Earthbender from a small village in one of the many Kingdoms scattered across the main continent. As a powerful villain strives to dominate the world, you will be forced to make choices that can stop it, aid it, or have no effect whatsoever.

>Rules

After each update I make, there will be a voting period of ten minutes. Once ten minutes have passed, whatever option has the most support will be the winner.

Write-ins are accepted, but only when specified If you see a write-in option, suggest whatever you like. If not, choose from the options I have provided.

Sometimes, rolls will be required. I will assign them, and they will operate under a d100 system. You will have three chances, and if one of the rolls succeeds, you pass. There are no crits, but I do take into account how much you succeed or fail by.

I reserve the right to veto certain write-ins, but will try to avoid doing so.

I hope you all have fun

"It's worth a shot, I suppose," you tell them.

"Well then, we'll have to discuss our plans later," Yong says, standing up. "For now, I need to get back to the recruits. Make yourselves at home in the meantime."

With that, he leaves the table and heads for the door.

"Are you guys sure this is a good idea?" Mauya asks.

Lantana eyes her curiously. "Why wouldn't it be?"

"They admitted themselves that they don't have the numbers to do much to Kalana's army," Mauya points out. "If they attack too big a target, or if Kalana finds out we're with them, they're going to get crushed."

"Which is why we need to help them recruit more members," Sansha tells her. "These people seem serious, and have won some victories already. We could help them build an army to challenge Kalana."

"I agree with Sansha," you state. "This is an opportunity we can't afford to waste."

Mauya sighs. "Looks like I'm outvoted, then."

"Well, do you have a better idea?" you ask the young Waterbender.

"I say that we should go with the old plan," Mauya answers. "We need Lantana to master all four elements. She's a strong Earthbender, but she still needs work on Air and Water, and she doesn't know any Firebending. Once she's done that, we can star-"

"No," Lantana cuts her off. "I've spent enough time running. It's time for me to start acting like the Avatar."

"Hard to do that if you get yourself killed," Mauya counters.

"I won't," Lantana snaps. "I've been at this for over a year, Mauya, don't talk down to me like I have no idea what I'm doing!"

"Both of you, cool it," you tell your friends. "Let's focus on what we're going to do about this lieutenant."

"Attacking supply lines and ambushing scouting parties should work at wearing the local forces down," Sansha comments. "But if this lieutenant calls for reinforcements, I'm not sure these people will be able to deal with it."

"So, then, we need a more decisive strike?" Lantana guesses.

Sansha shrugs. "Maybe, or we should find a way to step up recruitment. If people in the local villages learn that the Avatar is a part of this, they might be more likely to help."

"Recruitment's probably the best idea," you chime in. "Too much head-on fighting could wipe us out, but some sort of big strike might be a good place to start."

"Doesn't taking over a village count?" Mauya asks.

"I wonder how long ago they took this village back from Kalana's people," Lantana comments.

Sansha looks her way. "Maybe it's a good idea to find out. If it was recent, there's a chance that this "lieutenant" is going to launch a counterattack soon to try and take it back."

"We should talk to Yong as soon as possible," you suggest.

"He's working with his recruits," Sansha reminds you. "We're going to have to wait."

"But if an attack's coming, isn't that more important?" Mauya asks.

"I'm sure they're aware of what's going to happen," Sansha assures her. "Remember the people they had hidden in the woods around the village? They're keeping their eyes out. If there's an attack, we won't be caught off guard."

"This might be a good way to show strength and attract new recruits," you tell everyone. "If we can stop a counterattack, it should prove that this group has a chance."

Sansha nods in agreement. "Definitely, and when we take down this lieutenant, that should be enough to get a lot more recruits."

"And get Kalana's attention," Mauya points out.

"We're going to have to fight her sooner or later," Sansha tells her. "At least this way, we'll have some help when that happens."

Lantana sighs, looking away with a troubled expression on her face.

Picking up your water and taking a sip of it, you look toward the Avatar, asking her what's wrong.

She glances in your direction. "I'm just wondering why Kalana is searching for the library. She's got a huge army under her command, is one of the few Airbenders not at one of the temples. She was trained by Rinzen, so she's probably one of the stronger Airbenders out there, too."

"We get it, she's scary," Mauya tells her. "What's your point?"

"So, with all of that going for her, she still decided to go searching for the library," Lantana explains. "She didn't hunt us down at the Air Temple, she left her army behind, and she doesn't seem to have sent anybody after us. Why?"

"I don't know," you admit. "But, I'm worried."

Lantana nods. "So am I. Maybe....maybe we should have gone after her."

"We weren't ready to fight her," Mauya assures her. "This is smarter than chasing an Airbending maniac across the planet."

"Of course you'd say that," Lantana sighs.

"No, she has a point," Sansha says in defense of the Waterbender. "Kalana's almost killed you more than once. If we want to beat her, we need you to get as strong as possible, and we're going to need help."

"But what's she going to be doing while we get me stronger?" Lantana worries. "That library is supposed to hold more knowledge than any other place in the world. There's no telling what she could do with that kind of information."

"Right, there's no telling," Mauya says. "And sitting around panicking about it won't solve anything. We need to focus on the here and now for right now, and make ourselves ready for whatever Kalana throws at us."

"Mauya's right," you say. "And it doesn't matter what Kalana does; if we take down the people working for her, and take back the land she's stolen, she won't be able to do anything."

Mauya nods in agreement. "She won't have a base to stand on, and then we can take her down."

"Makes sense to me," Sansha agrees. "But we can't afford to waste too much time. So let's make sure we work hard at this."

Mauya nods. "Of course."

It suddenly becomes much more quiet. Previously, you could hear sounds from the next room over as the training continued, but now, that noise has mostly come to a stop. It seems that Yong is done with the recruits.

Lantana rises from the table. "Let's go talk to him."

The four of you make your way into the next room, finding the majority of the recruits in the process of either leaving or heading to the room you came from. Yong watches the various men and women with a proud expression, smiling when he sees your group approaching.

"Ah, I was just coming to get you," he tells Lantana. "I think we still have much to discuss, here."

The Avatar nods in agreement. "We do have a few questions."

"I'm sure," Yong tells her. "Ask away."

"What can you tell us about the local lieutenant?" you ask Yong.

"He's a Firebender, or so I here," Yong tells you. "And he has a fort in the forest between the surrounding villages, making him able to respond to attacks on each village quickly."

"Speaking of, has there been a counterattack on the village?" you ask.

"Not yet," Yong answers. "But, I expect one soon. I have people watching the surrounding forest, and scouting near his base. If he's going to attack, we'll know."

"I wanted to ask," Lantana starts, sounding nervous and uncomfortable. "Have you heard of a man named Xiong?"

Yong nods. "Rumors, mostly. I hear he gave Jungo's army one hell of a fight before finally being defeated. I've also heard talk that, after he lost, he joined Jungo's side, but I don't know for sure."

Lantana looks down, not saying a word.

"Is there anything I can do to help prepare a defense?" you ask.

"Not yet," Yong tells you. "Once we know an attack is coming, we'll set up our defenses, but until then, the people need to be able to move in and out of the village freely."

"That's dangerous," Sansha warns.

"I know," Yong assures her. "But we don't shy away from danger. When the battle comes, and you see us in action, you'll realize there's nothing to worry about."

"Don't you think you're being a little overconfident?" Sansha asks. "I know that your people are good, but there's always a chance for defeat."

"Sure there is," Yong agrees. "But not a high chance. Trust me, when the time comes, you'll see."

"Do you have any benders in your ranks?" you ask, changing the subject.

"A few," Yong tells you. "But trust me, the nonbenders here are more than capable of dealing with most benders as well."

Sansha looks interested. "Really?"

Yong nods. "There were benders here when we took this village, and my people handled them no problem."

"Alright," you say to her, removing your hand from her shoulder and turning away, leaving her to think as you return to the village.

The various warriors continue to keep watch throughout the village, and you notice a few of them sparring with one another, using staves rather than swords or bending. Otherwise, there's nothing to see but people going about their business.

Pengsong and Gava stand facing each other outside of the building you came from before, growling at each other as if having a conversation of some kind.

What do you mean?
>>
>>961504
Well for one thing, it's deceptively difficult to get a decent playerbase, whether it be in terms of size or temperament.
Half the time the players try to turn things into a harem quest or meta-game to shit. It gets incredibly frustrating.
Players seem also seem to mistake shittalking for constructive critiscm a lot of the time as well.
>>
>>961521
True, true

Also, does it seem like the population of /qst/ is slowly shrinking?
>>
>>961525
Bit by bit. Some people are flocking to Akun or going back to /tg/. I'm not worried about it though. I figure there's always gonna be a steady stream of anons from other boards anyways. Whether they become consistent browsers of this board is up to how interested they are and how good the quests here get.
>>
>>961536
We need to invade /tg/
>>
>>961561
Jokes aside, we have all we need there.
Us invading them would defeat the purpose of the creation of /qst/ anyways.
We could do with more representation in other boards though.
Does /qst/ even have it's own ad banner yet?

I don't think there's really been anything particularly memorable or shareable done on /qst/ yet anyways,
nothing that would constitute original board culture anyways.

Mauya's smirk becomes a kind smile. "I know you do."

Telling Mauya that you'll see her later, you move away from the well, returning to the main building, where you find Sansha having a conversation with Yong that seems to be wrapping up.

"Yeah, Lantana just needs some space," you answer. "But everything's fine."

Sansha gives an understanding nod. "I'm sure she'll be okay."

"So, what were you talking to Yong about?" you inquire, changing the subject.

"Just comparing stories about fighting Kalana's people," Sansha answers. "I'm pretty sure that ours are better."

You smile at that. "Do you want to go spar?"

"Alright," she says with a shrug.

The two of you find a spot outside of the village to do some sparring, with both of you in top form today. Sansha's skills at fighting benders have greatly improved, and she's learned to be constantly on the move to avoid your many tricks and traps, along with your more overt attacks.

Likewise, you've learned to evade attacks better, giving her trouble even at close quarters. After a few minutes, your match hasn't ended, and both of you are already getting tired.

"Not bad," Sansha compliments between breaths. "You've gotten good at this."

Pulling out the Hunter's Sword, you try a bit of creative Earthbending, manipulating the sword with your bending power and causing it to fly through the air and attack Sansha.

Though caught off-guard, Sansha's reflexes allow her to parry the blade, but she's left momentarily distracted, allowing you to knock her off her feet by manipulating the ground beneath her.

She falls back, grunting as she hits the ground. Picking herself up, the warrior girl rubs her bottom as she looks toward you.

"Okay, good job," she congratulates, putting away her swords.

Sansha glances over to you. "I know Lantana's having a hard time right now, but she's a strong person. She'll be fine when we need her. So will Mauya, so will you, and so will I."

Your friend's confidence is reassuring, and you change the subject once again, asking her if she's had the chance to meet any of the benders yet.

"No, but I've talked to Yong about them," Sansha says, suddenly seeming excited. "And guess what, there's a Firebender!"

You grin from ear to ear. "I can't wait to meet him."

"Well, we should both get some rest," you tell her.

"Good idea," Sansha agrees. "There's no telling when the attack's coming, so we should try and get as much rest as we can."

The two of you return to the village, making your way to the main building, and setting up your bedrolls before falling asleep. You're out as soon as your eyes close, and your dreams are peaceful.

At least, they are at first.

Your eyes shoot open, and you sit up, looking around and finding everyone still asleep. You then notice that the walls and ceiling have vanished, leaving everyone sleeping on a wooden floor surrounded by forest, with the stars and moon shining down from above.

You hear footsteps, and look ahead to see a man in blue robes approaching. He has long, white hair, some of which is braided, and a lengthy beard to match. His eyes seem to glow, and though you've never seen him before, he carries a certain familiarity about him.

"Who are you?" you ask the strange man.

He doesn't react in any real way, and his voice is even when he answers the question.

"I am Avatar Shui," the man introduces.

It takes you a moment to process that. Avatar Shui? Wasn't he the Avatar that existed before Lantana? How could he possibly be talking to you right now?

Then again, the past Avatars communicated with you and the others through the Avatar State before.

"What's going on?" you ask him.

"Well, what about her do we need to talk about?" you ask him.

"She is in grave danger," he tells you. "The Spirit of the Avatar itself is in great danger."

"That's not news," you tell him. "Kalana's been pretty up front about destroying the Avatar."

"True, but I fear that she is going to find the means to succeed," Shui tells you. "Many beings in the Spirit World are growing restless, and the past Avatars have been seeing visions of a library in the desert, the same library Kalana seeks. We have felt a great sense of dread and doom. Lantana is in grave danger, as are all of her lives, both past and future."

"Well, why are you telling me, and not her?" you ask.

"She's not ready to face Kalana," you insist. "None of us are."

"Lantana shares that fear," Shui replies. "She believes the best course of action to be dealing with Kalana's followers while the Airbender is away, strengthening herself through conflict, taking time to learn the elements, and facing Kalana with the full might of the Avatar when the Airbender returns from her journey. In most situations, I believe this would be a wise course of action. However, these are special circumstances, and I believe that, should Kalana be able to finish her journey, Lantana will not be able to stop her."

"Lantana has learned to control three of the elements," Shui tells you. "She may have only mastered Earthbending, but her powers over water and air give her an edge over most opponents. She also has the aid of you and your friends, all of whom are capable at their respective skills. And, should she be backed into a corner, Lantana will have the power of all of her past lives to aid her. The Avatar State may make her vulnerable, but no single being will be able to match that kind of power, unless Kalana succeeds in finding whatever it is that she is searching for."

>A. You will talk to her

>B. Sorry, but you agree with Lantana

>C. It's probably already too late; Kalana left weeks ago

>D. Something else

"Not to mention, not one of us even knows the exact location where the library is located in that vast desert."

>D. Do you have any idea what Kalana could do to bring down Lantana in the avatar-state?
>>

>>C. It's probably already too late; Kalana left weeks ago

Also what is this "Thing" Kalana is looking for?
>>
>>967359
>D. A point, but the opportunity to learn firebending as well is right in front of us. I'll push for leaving once she's learned the basics.
>>
>C
"Do any of the spirits have anything that can help us locate the library or at least what Kalana may want with it "
>>
>>967366
>>967369
"It's probably too late; Kalana left weeks ago," you tell him. "Unless the Spirits can tell us where the library is, and what Kalana's looking for, there isn't much that we can do."

"I know it's a slim chance," Shui acknowledges. "But I believe it is still a better chance than Lantana's course of action. I know you care for her, but you must be willing to tell her when she is making a mistake. I do not know precisely where the library is located, or what Kalana seeks, but if you wait to find out, it will be too late."

>A. Alright; you will talk to her

this is it
>C. Then i will go alone she will bound to chase me and then find me that will lead to Kalana and if that doesnt work then at least i stalled her plans enough to make the avatar catch up to her
>>
>>967463
i know its stupid but this is time crucial desicions where we can maybe change whatever the fuck is going on.....or probably make it worse but fuck it I WILL PUSH MY LUCK AND MAY THE BLIND BANDIT BLESS MY ROLLS
>>
>>967432
>>A. Alright; you will talk to her
>>
>>967472
You realize that asking Toph to bless your rolls didn't actually help the last...8 times, right?
>>
>>967486
well then i ask for our god and savior the one and only spiritual brother Iroh
>>
>>967506
I think the only thing Iroh can bless us with is great gains and top-tier AOE attacks.
>>
>>967432
>>A. Alright; you will talk to her
>>C. Don't expect me to throw her life away though. What is Kalana even trying to find that would give her the power to defeat the Avatar State?
>>
>>967460
>>967461
"Alright, I'll talk to her," you promise.

"That is all I ask," Shui tells you. "I wish you luck, Sei Fong. There will be trying times ahead."

The Avatar backs away, seeming to float out into the forest. The trees slowly fade from view, the walls return, as does the ceiling. Darkness takes you once again, and you return to your dreams.

Thanks as always for running Som. I hope the holidays are treating you well.
Are we gonna have to leave before Lantana can get her crash-course in firebending?
Also on a side note, Is the Kumaken being green a lead up to Tofoo eventually doing a shining finger sword type thing?
>>
>>967528
Are we going to have to ask for Pengsong's cooperation in order to make Lantana to go to the library?
>>
>>967539
You don't have to do anything

Maybe

Just curious, are you gonna be able to run on the 24th and 25th? Feel free not to answer.
>>
>>968945
I doubt there would be much tournout if I did, it's been low enough lately
>>
>>969734
Figures. Whatever happens, I hope you have a good Christmas.
>>
Why is earthbending best bending?
Also when do we start again?
>>
>>969807
But that's not Waterbending

And Idunno, trying to gauge if there will be participation if I run tonight
>>
Looks like there won't be threads until after Christmas, but I will stick around here if anybody has any questions, comments, requests, concerns, etc
>>
>>969813
Have you parsed out what types of earthbending we're actually gonna be able to learn yet, or just what we can't learn?
How's Mauya feeling about Sei?
Is Lantana gonna get mad at us when we bring the previous Avatar's advice?
Did Shui talk to anybody else in the group?
How solidified do you have the character for the Firebending teacher?
>>
>>969813
Does the library contain information about other spirits?
>>
>>969826
That would be telling
She considers him a close friend, but he irritates the Hell out of her sometimes

That would be telling

That would be telling

Meh

>>969829
Yes
>>
>>969832
I have a talent for bad questions, don't I?
How common is lightning bending at this point in time?
>>
>>969832
So is Koh's just a blank scroll?
>>
>>969840
Extremely rare

>>969842
Hah

Nope
>>
A quick post of everyone's opinion on us, and nicknames when??
>>
>>969997
Lantana: Sees you as her best friend

Sansha: Sees you as a dear and respected friend/ally

Mauya: Sees you as a good friend and trusted ally, but you piss her off

Pengsong: Thinks you're okay

Gava: Thinks you're okay
>>
>>970012
>Gava and Pengsong
All those head rubs you'd think we'd mean something.
Also question SOM, any particular reason you don't do char gen?
>>
>>970050
Because I thought you guys would prefer to come up with your own appearance
>>
>>970058
Huh, I can understand. Definitely different from some of the other quest where char gen can get messy
