"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

Due to your creativity and cleverness in lying about the (probably true by now) fate of the poor orphans last thread, I’m going to upgrade Corporal ‘Prince’ to Clever II. That’s +10 to your Personal Combat DC, representing you fighting dirty and using every trick in the underhanded tricks book. That’s also +5 to [Clever] choice options so Heroic DC will be DC25 instead of DC20, Hard 45 and so on. However I am doing this to encourage creativity and the good standard players exhibited last thread, if I catch any hint of munchkinism such as preferring [Clever] choices because you have a slight mechanical bonus I will punish you for it.

Additionally, your deed of not dying in the face of a daemon invasion and getting your entire squad to safety has gained you a Skill Point. Spend it however you wish, remember 'Face Me is still in temporary play for the next 30 hours.

If we use it to get Face Me permanently what happens to the temporary bonus?
>>

>>
>>97210
Nothing, it's simply made permanent.

The Temporary bonus is gained via meditation before the 'Big One', a major engagement like the assault on Sarsburg. It allows you to try out a skill, see if you like it enough to invest a skill point in at a later date.

You made it. The Neumunster Imperial Palace, crown of the great city of Sarsburg and the seat of power for the strongest member of the Free Alliance.

“Ow!” You exclaim as Trooper Caroline Schuster pulls your hand away from the wound in your shoulder to get a look at it.

“Don’t be such a baby, boss. Here, might want to try keeping the red stuff on the inside.” Trooper Schuster dabs at the cut above your eye [10/15 HP]. “There. At least you won’t go bleeding out on us.”

You grunt in thanks. There are times you think your squaddies get a little too lippy with you, and sometimes you like ‘em like that.

“Now if you’ll excuse me, boss, I’m gonna go… snoop.” Trooper Schuster says absent-mindedly, probably eyeing potential loot.

Marcus has moved on from saluting the damn portrait on the wall, ever the veteran he’s started snoozing on a lovely cushioned chair in the corner. There’s Trooper Durvano next to him, softly stroking this silver flower vase like it was his pregnant missus or something. You’re too far away to tell but he might be whispering to the damn thing. Pietre is… you think he’s trying to check himself out in the full-length mirror they have at the end of the room. …is he posing? Mask is standing right next to him facing the other way, you doubt material wealth interests him anymore.

Trooper Belhamun is twitching about nervously, seemingly looking at people rather than things. Good to see someone isn’t wholly distracted.
Kid, bless his (or her) heart, is casually glancing at the large amounts of silverware left around. The latest attack must have interrupted a late dinner or something.

All in all, if the opulence in this room is anything to go by then your time here could be very profitable…

>The Imperial Treasury. You and twice your number couldn’t hope to empty it, but that’s alright because your Employer will probably want a hand in that particular pie. Hell, even a tenth of that Gelt…

>The Imperial Family. If countries bankrupt themselves for a king’s ransom, what would an Emperor net? It doesn’t even have to be the old man himself, a couple of his younger sires would have the same effect. And your employer would certainly be pleased…

Depends largely on whether you win the combat in those last few rounds.

If you die in this quest, you die. I won't be asspulling anything as the QM in the quest to wave it away.

Just wondering if we finished the fight before the rounds we can fight, if we could do some emergency healing.

Again, seems a roughly even split between DRAGONS and GOLD. Oh well, you're an opportunist not Oceans Eleven.

-----------------------------------------

Dragon. Or Gold. Gold. But... Dragon...

Dragon. Definitely. But the Gold... Your fantasises are interrupted by the roar outside.

The West Ballroom’s windows are too tinted to get a good view of anything, but the hallway that leads to the secret passage into the Palace Gardens downstairs looks right over the city. There’s still a couple of Heigelen Guard around, but Captain von Harti and most of the others have left. Probably doing what they can in the face of the disaster you’re watching unfold from the comfortable safety of the warded Palace grounds.

All Below has broken loose out there. The portal must have expanded while you were trying to get inside, you can see the glow from here. A sick shade of green and black to contrast the yellow and orange of the growing number of fires throughout Sarsburg. You’re not the kind to scare easy, a healthy sense of self-preservation sure, but you’ve never dwelt on it overmuch. Hard not to do so now, with those… things out there. And it’s not just the creepy-crawlies, daemon-dogs and human sized (if not shaped) uglies anymore. There are bigger ones stalking about now, giant nightmares given life. Like that centipede horror throwing itself against the faint blue wards of the palace, or that spider man-thing scooping up batches of townsfolk trying to make it across the main bridge.

You find yourself really, -really- hoping these Palace wards hold. Your grim musings are interrupted by the accented voice of the escaped slave Nissar Belhamun.

“Just-Corporal?” Trooper Belhamun inclines his head “I must be speaking to you. Softly.”

“Sure thing, Trooper.” Sometimes you wonder if his common is getting worse, not better.

“We are having problem.”

“I figured.” You figured. “What is it?”

“It is problem of one of us. Is not us.”

Sure, that clarifies everything. Your nonplussed stare must have slipped through, as Nissar hurriedly continues.

Kayf’aqul ibliss… Damon, Schuster say? Damon inside.”

“A daemon snuck inside the palace?” This is cause for concern, but you think you can handle one-

“Not inside palace, Just-Corporal. Damon inside one of us.”

Ah. That is worrying.

You suppose you could ask the Heigelen Guard to find Captain von Harti (wherever she is) and ask her to lend you their blade for a bit. That might not go down fantastically though, especially if the clue on to Mask.

>>97570

"How can you be so sure?" Never discount the ability of NCOs to make the common ranks question their own judgement.

Unfortunately, Trooper Belhamun isn't fazed by your 'I don't need more bad news' face.

"Is bad smell, Just-Corporal, like when jalinid- the Abomination in camp is around. Different from same same damon outside."

So he can... smell(?) Page #137.

“Trooper, I need you to narrow it down as much as you can.” You do your best not to glance suspiciously at everyone while you whisper to the pleasant ex-slave. “In the meantime I’ll go get… help.”

You tell Nissar to start with the guy talking to expensive inanimate objects and work his way down from there. Probably Kid next, given you were never very good with children.

Now where did that Captain go... Last you saw her she stormed off with a troop of Heigelen Guard towards the Palace Gates. That also happens to be where the fighting is thickest as the Neumunster forces attempt to fend off all of Below from the townsfolk fleeing across the main bridge. Probably down there to relieve some of that (soon-to-be) dead orphan guilt.

Of course, you could just kill one of the numerous other Heigelen Oberleutnant. Captains, or Lieutenant's running around. The Palace is in enough turmoil no one will think anything of it. And there are enough secret passageways, side-halls and pieces of heavy furniture to hide a body easily enough.

Then again, who knows what a quick trip down to the armoury will net you. That's likely to be the most heavily guarded though, but you could bluff your way in. It would be getting the good stuff out that would be difficult.

You make your way back to the West Ballroom, putting on a suitably rushed or authoritative face for any passing Neumunster troops.

Daemons hate all this holy stuff, messes with your baditude or something. To be fair Mask and Smiles-at-Dice are also adverse to it, and you yourself have never been up-to-date with your Saints.

"I hea-Ow what-the-fek-"

"Sorry, just testing." You say, sheathing your new toy.

LCPL Marcus gives you a half-glare and half-confused quizzical look before getting back on track. Before you can ask him what’s what he put a finger to his lips and leans back, murmuring.

“Apparently, these walls are paper thin.”

No wonder palaces and courtrooms abound with intrigue, spying must be the easiest thing in the world if all it takes is to lean against a wall at the right time. The Neumunster officers, you assume they’re officers because they talk in that ‘officer way’ you and your fellow NCOs are so used to dealing with, aren’t even trying to lower their voices. Granted they don’t suspect the enemy is already in the building but still…

“Damn it, man, stop blubbering and report! What in the Saint’s name is going on out there?”

“T-the whole thing has gone to Below, Oberleutnant! The undead and fell-mercenaries had breached the Western Walls, The 2nd Line Regiment was holding but… but then…”

“But then what?!”

“Daemons, sire! They took us from the rear and…”

“I can bloody see it’s daemons, soldier! One only has to look outside. If the breach has fallen and the undead are inside…”

“They are not, sire. It appears that the barrier preventing our artillery is also preventing their army from flooding in. Only the vanguard of the Necromancer’s mercenaries and vampire ranks made it through, and they were fighting the Below every bit as much as we.”
You and Marcus spare each other a sharp glance at that. You suspected the vanguard would have pushed past the walls before the summoning, but now you know. Some of your fellow Company brothers are out there, in the thick of it. Maybe the Necromancer’s vampiric brother Vermillio too, but that hardly matters.
“Where were they last heading? How many of them? Who was leading them?” The Neumunster officer’s voice comes through again.

“They pushed inwards once resistance collapsed, I don’t think they realised what was going on until the daemons started attacking them as well. Last reports were they holed up in the Barlensk Villa a few streets away from here. I didn’t recognise any leaders, except maybe that singing lunatic with the Zweihander. Are you… shall I send fo-“
“Don’t be an idiot, man. We’ve got bigger problems than a few sellswords that will be dead soon enough anyway. Here, follow me and write this down. Call up what’s left of the 4th Line and send them…”

>>
>>98670

The voices fade out as whoever was in the hallway on the other side storms off to save the city or something. You and Lancer ‘Jack’ Marcus share a look, both of you turn to regard the small detail of Heigelen Guards guarding the stairs to the Garden passage.

“We could take them.” Lancer Marcus says conversationally, as if commenting on the décor.

“We could.” You nod as another squad of Neumunster soldiers run past the hallway behind you. “But we’d have to time it right. We’re good, but we’re not -hold off an entire Palace full of Heigelen Guard indefinitely- good.”

“Short time frame then.” Marcus grunts. “Our brothers in black would have to already be outside in the Palace Gardens when we strike.”

You and Marcus share that sidelong glance common between NCOs. To be waiting outside the passage when you kill the guards means your fellow Black Company would need to know where to be and when. Which means someone will have to get a message to them. And bring them back. Which means going out alone.

You can't ask that of your men. By all accounts the Barlensk Villa is only a few streets away (the Heigelen Guard on duty were surprisingly helpful with directions). The problem is that there's half of Below between you and that Villa where you brothers are held up.

Odds are whoever steps out on that mission isn't coming back. And you don't have it in you to 'volunteer' one of your lads into it. No, it has to be you.

It's not like they'll be sitting on their arse either, once you escort your brothers through the Palace Gardens they'll have their hands full taking out the Heigelen guards.

First things first though, testing for Daemon-possesion.

>12 [STRONG SUCCESS]
In addition to clearing the natural members of your squad under suspicion, you also cleared the unnatural ones.

-----------------------------------------------------

There's some grumbling, and dragging of feet when you bring the squad over one by one to you, Lancer 'Jack' and Trooper Nissar to look over. It's understandable of course, it's one thing for the boss to shout at you and call you names and another entirely when he starts chopping at you with a glowing sword. Trooper Schuster, Trooper Durvano, Trooper Kid and Knight-of-the-Line Verdun all file through reluctantly.

Nonetheless, they grin (or scowl) and bear it. And the complaining stops, mostly, once you explain why the whole procedure was necessary.

Knight-of-the-Line Mask and Trooper Smiles-at-Dice are adverse to the blade inherently, but Nissar reluctantly confirms that no, they are not possesed either. Or, at the very least, Mask is probably possesed but not by a daemon.

"Could be the Daemon fled the host, Corporal." Trooper Nissar still seems concerned. "Once it saw you with blade, it left. But still, host should have noticed."

"I haven't noticed anyone acting out." Lancer 'Jack' grumbles.

Oh well, hopefully it's some poor Neumunster sod's problem now.

"Arr, matey. Ye always know Vendis here has a wee bit of grog stowed away harharr." Durvano pauses from his filching while you swig to show you something. Tying your Ajiyimad Pistol to a tassel hanging from your chestplate, he secures the weapon but leaves enough leeway for you to point and aim it as normal. Now you can discard the weapon after firing without risk of losing it, allowing you to switch quickly into your fighting style.

"This here be a trick some of us fine Sabari souls took to. With all the hubbub of boarding and looting and er-... privateering, aye, a soul rarely had the chance to switch between blade and blasting without fiddling around all aboot nothing."

You've had your swig, looted a nice sword and patched up the few holes you had in you. You're about as ready for what's out there as you'll ever be. The Heigelen Guard don't need much convincing to let you out, you tell them the truth after all, some of your men are still out there. Not your fault the assume those men are on their side.

You turn to the assembled squad before you make your way down the passageway.

You will have the 'Got the Jump' bonus, in the first combat round.

---------------------------------------

You sneak, as stealthily as any heavily armoured warrior can, through the Palace Garden, ignoring the creepy glowing eyes that seem to follow you the whole time.

You dodge the collapsing clocktower in the square where you fought side-by-side Captain von Harti an hour ago, managing to avoid the attention of the giant centipede creature that toppled it.

You escape that swarm of ominously glowing skull-wasps, diving into the canal at the last instant. You were running out of breath when the swarm grew bored.

The Villa can't be far now, you can hear the din of battle up ahead. Now there's the issue of getting past this duel between what appears to be a Vampire wielding a blade black as night and coursing with lightning and a snake-man...thing?

And no, it couldn't just be any bloodsucker. This looks like Count Vermillio, the younger brother of your employer, The Necromancer. Obstensibly supposed to be second-in-command of the fell forces, you wonder what the hell he was doing in the middle of the fighting if he knew his sister Syka was about to set off a daemon bomb trapping him inside. Unless he didn't know...

It is not Two-Handed, but having it on you is enough to finish off any daemons that you do defeat (reforging into a weapon you are trained in is also an option).

Count Vermillio seems to have the upper hand, slashing away at the serpent creature and dodging it's gobs of acid it flings his way. The daemon still heals from the wounds inflicted, but slowly, and it seems in immense pain from whatever energies course through Vermillio's blade.

For a moment, as the serpent-thing's guard is left open, it seems your assistance isn't necessary after all. Then, being a vampire, Vermillio does a stupid thing, which is sink his fangs into the corrupted daemon flesh.

And now he can't stop vomiting black bile as the snake-man rears itself up for the final blow.

Before the daemon can leap upon the projectile-vomiting-vampire your massive blade slices into the back of it's head.

Normally, a blow which leaves the inside of a creatures head visible from at least three points of view would put it down. Unfortunately, daemons don't seem to give a shit about that. You do have it's full attention though.

Much to your surprise it does. Or at least starts to before your stab that Blessed Blade somewhere into it’s centre mass. With an awful hiss the things shudders and starts to melt.

"Well struck, bloodbag, well st-BLLARGSGHH" Count Vermillio manages to cough out a backhanded compliment before the vile, black contents of his insides continue to launch themselves out at a projectile rate.

“Ugh, that is gross.” You scowl, stepping around the growing puddle of black bile.

It doesn’t look like the Count Vermillio is recovering too quickly from the poisoned blood. Given his weakened state, he’s in no position to stop you walking off with that fine blade of his…

On the other hand, directly to your left there is a Neumunster soldier swiftly bleeding out all over the floor. Which seems such a waste.

“Thank you for your willing contribution to the armed forces.” It’s always important to observe the formalities as you drag the young Neumunster trooper over to the spewing Vampire.

Thankfully the Neumunster soldier seems to be on the verge of passing out from blood loss so you can avoid all the ‘oh god please no’ and ‘why are you doing this?’ The unfortunate soldier looks to be pretty young. A baby face, almost angelic. His armour is so torn up you can’t even tell what unit he was originally from.

Count Vermillio bites down eagerly, greedily sucking what’s left of the young man’s lifeblood. Then he stops, choking. Vermillio’s gaze snaps to you, an eerie light starting to course through his veins.

“You fool! This is a Serap-“BLAM In an explosion of pure light you find yourself covered in chunks and… vampire dust?

That was unexpected.

He's dead. Like he literally exploded.

Im sure he's important to the setting, which is why Forgotten QM is perturbed.
>>
>>100556
Yeah, so the vampires he was the leader of will lose their leadership and just go around sucking people dry instead of having blood orgies. Well they'll probably still have those but any control over how and when they happen will be lost.
Plus other important stuff, but that'll probably be what affects us the most, vampires sneaking around our camp, trying to bite everyone.

Okay. You're nearly there. Huddled in an alleyway, the entrance to the villa is right opposite you. You can see soldiers of the Black Company struggling to keep out the assailing daemons that aren't busy running amok in the streets. It looks like a mix of Kreigstrom and Infantry, even a few Bloodknights that would be under the late Count Vermillio's command.

You're just about to dash across the street when you hear a whimper behind you. You see two small figures huddling on the doorstep behind you. a young boy and girl looking the worse for wear.

The girl, with the gap-teeth. That would probably be Jessica. And that one-legged tyke with the big sad eyes, yep. Definitely One-Legged Ollie. This must be what's left of the orphans you had that talk with Captain von Harti about.

-------------------------------------

>'The orphans are evidence. And you need to hide the evidence.' Get rid of Jessica and Ollie. [Clever]

>'These orphans won't last long on their own. Oh well, not your problem.' Ditch the orphans (again). [Experience]

Okay, there are two ways this can go.

(1) You shield the orphans from whatever monstrosity comes roaring after you.
Your daggers reduce the enemy Got-the-Jump Bonus DC from 20 to 10.

(2) Those poor helpless kids (judgemental stare) get eaten up first. You're still locked in combat but there's not -10DC from Got-the-Jump.

You can't remember your Nameday, you are seeing people walk around you that are long dead (some because of you personally) and you taste purple on the back of your earlobe.

All that disappears when you fire your pistol into the smiling pink elephant-hallucination and reality comes roaring back up to you. The strange creature screams and slinks away, missing half of it's face and ear. It begins to slink away in search of easier prey.

You look behind it at where the orphans should be. One-Legged Ollie... well there's not much left of Ollie. Jessica though, she'll come last everytime in the Orphanage Hop-skip-jump Games, but if you can stop the bleeding she'll live.

Of course, that creature is directly between you and her while the relative safety of the Villa is right behind you.

(And no I'm not going to bother calculating it, you anally annihilated that creepy-crawly.)
Some anon give me 1d2 to see if that Cut them Down went off for shits and giggles. 1 = YES

It's not that you were mediocre at swordplay, you didn't make it into the Kriegstrom for nothing after all. It's just... you've let yourself get a bit rusty these last couple of years. Now that you're in a scrap, a -real- scrap, you can feel it all coming back to you.

You look up to see a few dumb-struck Black Company Troopers standing behind you. Even Jessica has stopped screaming for a moment and is staring at you in horror/amazement. You look down at what's left of the creature, there's even less left of it than Ollie.

Once you get into the 'swing' of things it all becomes automatic. You switch between Carnotaur, Wingshark and Mutt with ease, the massive blade a (rather long and unwieldy) extension of your own body. There are some out there as good as you, but not a whole lot of them.

SKILL GAINED
My Blood For His
All Gods require sacrifice, the Dark Father is no different.

At the cost of 10%(rounded down) of your Max HP, gain a single -10 Modifier to the result of any roll.
>FREE ACTION

One of the the Black Company Troopers starts to give you a hand up but you groggily shrug him off.

"The girl first." You rasp, the acid from that snake-thing still burning across your throat. Likely to leave an ugly scar, that is. The Trooper obliges, picking up the little bundle of blood and tears and bring it inside.

"Yeah, yeah and I'm sure you fart sunshine too" grins the other Trooper, sling your arm over him and half-dragging you inside. "FRIENDLIES COMING IN. Let's get you looked at, what is tha-Corporal. Doubt rank will matter much soon, eh? All be Below-feed by nights end. Tutut, bad way to go."

Inside the villa is a mess. Wounded lie on the floor or tables screaming or otherwise being all too still. The windows are barred as well as they can be, daemons are forces to reach through a wall of pikes and blades before they can claw at squishy flesh. On the rooftops, Vampiric Bloodknights and what's left of the undead forces fight side-by-side Black Company against the gribblies that manage to scale the walls. Still, most of the daemons are still busy with the easier pickings of the Sarsburg citizenry. This place won't hold long against a concerted effort or if, Dark Father forbid, one of the big ones looks this way.

"Hadrien... I need to see-" You gasp, you didn't come all this way just to fail to deliver the bloody message. That would be just downright unfair.

Hadrien nearly pulls you off the damn table when he grips your arm in his. You make a right sight, both you covered in blood and smiling like idiots at each other just to see your friend alive.
Best 1 of 3 for your next combat-orientated roll

It's good to see your friend again, doubly so for how useful the mad bastard is in a fight.

You have a lot of comrades unaccounted for, and, by below, you also don't know who is even in charge now. You figure Captain 'Cutthroat' Kiranova would have been stuck on the other side when the barrier came down, you don't sense her commanding presence or resonating voice. Who do you ask after first?

---------------------------------------

"Good to see you again, Bad Hand." You grin. "Who's in charge around here?"

"Ah... you know that's a pretty good question, isn't it bru?" Bad Hand scrunches up his face. He tends to do that when thinking logically. "I guess that Lieutenant from 4th is, but he's in a bad way, yeah? I'm sure the Bloodknight's think they are, that dark-haired one sure has been giving a lot of orders. Some of them even make sense, you know? They're still waiting on their boss to get back from reconnaissance though..."

"Look, about the vampire boss..." You say, showing him Count Vermillio's signature Bittersteel.

Bad Hadrien looks from the crackling black blade back to you. A shit-eating grin forms on his face.

"You gonna blame that on Corporal Aeron too, eh?"

You have the good grace to at least look sheepish.

All in all, of the 150 Black Company Brothers that made it through the breach before the magical barrier went up, some 100 are shored up here in Bershenk Villa. It will be damn near impossible to get all of them to the relative safety of the palace, but it's worth a shot.

When Corporal 'Bad Hand' told you the 4th Lietuenant was in a bad way you meant that to mean wounded not hacking up his lungs from a 50-year tobacco habit.

It doesn't take much to convince him. It's either die on the way to the hope of safety now or die huddled in here soon. When you say your men can have the side passage open, he believes you.

"Shame the *cough cough* Bloodknights can't be convinced to come with us. They'd have really made a difference, less casualties for us.

-------------------------------
>"Yes, yes. Damn shame." Time's a wasting, best you were gone.

"You look like shit, soldier." The Lieutenant says, looking you up and down.

If you were on inspection you'd probably be flogged given your torn clothes, still bleeding wounds and next to useless armour. Right now though, you couldn't give a shit.

"Your armour is shit. Grab some off the pile, their old owners have no use for it."

"Yessir." You turn to leave.
[Damaged Equipment Removed]

"And Trooper?" You pause midstride.

"Yessir?"

"If this all works out, I'll owe you a drink."

"Yessir." You continue to-

"And Trooper?"

"Yessir?" As you about turn, clamping down on the urge to shout WHAT?!

"You really do look like shit. Do you need some looking to before we head out?"

Every minute you waste here will mean a more difficult trek towards the Palace Gardens, which means more casualties. At the same time, it would be nice to not be bleeding out of nearly every orifice.

It only takes a couple of minutes to ensure that you aren't -still- bleeding. It's amazing what bulk amounts of cloth can do for keeping your bodily fluids on the inside.

Nobody can do anything about that acid around your throat except run water over it. It still itches like fek, but you can speak without sounding too hoarse now.
[5/15 HP]
Grievously Wounded downgraded to Wounded [-5 DC]

The plan is simple, the Kiregstrom elements lead the way, spilling out the servant doors into the side streets. Then, as a whole, the Company will begin it's slow and gruelling fighting-retreat to the Palace Gardens, wounded in the center. That is to say, what is left of the Kriegstrom will lead the way. All up you count maybe 20 of you left out of what was supposed to be all of the 7th and 8th Platoon.

You can see the shadows flitter by at the bottom of the door. Less and less fleeing civilians and more of the Below ilk. You can hear the screams, the roars and the... whatever those other noises are. They're all around you, you can hear them skittering around the streets or up the walls. The fighting between the Bloodknights and the daemonic fiends seems to escalate.

You look to your right. Beside you is Corporal 'Bad Hand', your old pal, grinning right back at you like the moon-touched loon he is. Of course he had to 'volunteer' us for the front line, he's always been overeager.

"What?"

"I'm gonna say it."

"I'm gonna say the thing." You struggle to contain your smirk.

"Don't say the thi-"

"Looks like we've been dealt a..." You're fairly certain your shit eating beats the one he had when he saw Count Vermillio's blade earlier. You can hear the Kreigstrom and Infantry sniggering behind you, it's true that stressful situations turn poor jokes into hilarious ones.

"...sigh[/b[ a 'Bad Hand'." A chorus of groans and cheers resonates behind the two of you. "...you arse."

"Hey, Prince." 'Bad Hand' looks at you seriously now. "I want you to open that Deathnote."

Earlier, after the poker match that seems a year ago not a day, you promised to carry a Deathnote (a soldiers last testament/will) for him.
