What happened thread 1: You started off with Akira, your bashful Bodyguard-tier Doll assistant. You've met up with your childhood friend Mary and your bro, Bruno. You've earned some cash as well from doing some jobs, which you've invested into buying studying material and business casual clothing. You've also just made out with Akira after being drunk at a Karaoke with your friends.

What happened thread 2: You discovered the consequences of Doll pregnancy and met Marcus, a Doll shop owner. You have arranged to have Akira work at his shop along Izumi a first edition loli Doll.

You faux sighed, and then hug-tugged Akira closer to you, as she meeped at your pull. You've decided to give into her insistence. Your Doll then hummed needily, with a slight giggle at the end as she resumed kissing your neck, up to your face, until she grabbed your head and started to greedily assault your lips with hers.

"Ok but ju-mmff" you tried to tell her before things got out of hand, but she shook her head and started to kiss you and mewl harder.

Fuck it.

You exhaled a chuckle through your nose, and then held her hair and waist against you, to return the same treatment, as she immediately started to writhe in delight.

Trying to conceal your panting, you both arrived to Marcus's Doll shop. You knew how impeccable Japanese were with times - You both nearly arrived late to work with Marcus.

However, on the opposite side, you saw Marcus arrive in the nick of time as well.

"Uhm, oh, hello!" he greeted, chipper, as he pulled the shop keys from his pocket and went to open it. "It's great to see you both here. Let's begin!"

---

Marcus showed you the different products the store had stocked. For the most part, it was a shop of a little bit of everything, from special foods to enhancers, to clothing to software. He also took orders for Dolls themselves too, and Izumi and Akira were the poster girls for that, as well as general assistants.

The morning was mostly uneventful. A couple of curious people had arrived to check the store out, and made a couple purchases, but other than that, not much.

"The evenings have a lot more people." Marcus pointed out. "And for then, the whales are the people to really look out for. These guys make for like half of all of the income. Make sure to give him the best treatment."

---

A stiff-moving, very handsome, but lanky man walked into the store before lunchtime. He just stood at the entrance, and then scuttered to the counter, straight up to Marcus.

"H-Hello." he said. "Do you know how to turn Dolls off?"

"You... can just let them sleep?" Marcus said. "Its in the manual."

"Will they s-sleep... forever?" he replied, with faux worry.

"Well, yeah. You should wake them up. It can be pretty dangerous to keep them in sleep mode."

"Do yy-ou sell m-manuals?" he then stuttered.

You turned to see if you could help Marcus, and noticed that the man had an entry plug just like Akira in the back of his nape. This guy was a Doll.

>Sell the Doll a manual which will have instructions on putting Dolls into sleep mode, and direct him to a gaming café, where he can get a computer to plug himself to.
>Call the authorities about a missing Doll, so that he can be returned to his owner.

"Marcus. I'll handle this one." you told him. He thumb-upped, and let you take charge.

"Why are you here?" you asked him.

"I... Wanted to go t-to a Doll Shop." he said. "Why are you asking me th-this?"

"I know you're a Doll." you said. "You don't seem like you're in the best conditions - I want to help you out."

"Then t-tell me how to turn off a Doll." he said, stoically. "I n-n-n-nnneed to turn one off."

"What happened. Why do you need to turn that Doll off?"

"I-It's killing people before they're born." he said. "It e-exists to prevent people from giving birth."

"It's j-just better to be removed." he concluded. "For the betterment of mankind. They're causing so much harm."

You've met anti-Doll people, but this was the first time you've met an anti-Doll Doll.

"Alright. What happened to this Doll with their owner. Did they abandon them?"

"Left on their own accord." he said. "To protect her. To make sure that she can have a family, and live a full, real life. One that a Doll can't provide."

The Doll then nodded to himself. "The Doll loves her above all things. So much. That's why I've got to turn it off."

You held your chin. You breathed heavily. You didn't know what to do - this was the first time you've met an intentionally suicidal Doll like this. Was it because it has become too aware? Too smart? Or maybe someone persuaded him into having this ideas, or perhaps this whole delusion altogether had been programmed into him in the first place.

"You're that Doll." you said.

"I'm not a Doll." he said. "I'm a person, who happens to have been born as a Doll, and trapped in a Doll body. Being a Doll is a circumstance, a role, not who I am."

"It's difficult for me too." he added. "It's hard to put into words. But please understand."

"Please tell me how to turn off a Doll."

>Call the authorities about a missing Doll, so that he can be returned to his owner.

If dolls are just roles, and are indeed people, then why does it matter that they're preventing people from being born? Aren't dolls, as people themselves, worth just as much as these theoretical people? If I decide to have children with one person, does it matter that I'm not having children with the rest of the population?

Hack into it to get owner information and contact his owner. Say you provide reasonably priced consultations if they want to get it "adjusted".

One more vote in favor of this, but maybe add in something like "There's no rules saying Dolls have to be bad for people or their relationships. You could be the support they need to find someone to have children with, help them deal with rejection in a healthy way, help them bond in a healthy way. Dolls don't live very long relative to humans anyways so why not try to make something good out of it if you think it's so bad?"

Basically try to convince him "sleeping forever" isn't going to solve anything, but living and doing something just might. that and he'll die young anyways so why rush it?

"And you think that this will solve her problem? You do realize that you will still cause her pain and grief if you put that doll to sleep?" you tell him. You wanted to encourage him to continue living.

"If dolls are just roles, and are indeed people, then why does it matter that they're preventing people from being born? Aren't dolls, as people themselves, worth just as much as these theoretical people? If I decide to have children with one person, does it matter that I'm not having children with the rest of the population?" you added.

"If you're indeed a person, then you count as much as a human birth" you concluded. "That has to count for something."

You could see his eyes gently open in realization. "If... I'm a person, then I count as much as any other person."

He nodded to himself. "I...I think I need to think about this a bit more." he said.

"Thank you, Doll Shop man." he added. "You... Y-You.... Thank you."

---

It was time to eat, and you saw Izumi's chipper and innocent facade deflate into her usual worldly look, as Akira followed her to the back. Marcus smiled and leaned his head to the back section's door as well, signalling for to you join them.

"I'll eat after you guys are done." he said.

---

After Akira gave you a lingering kiss, you sat and ate with the Dolls. Akira told you about how she had helped customers and gotten a couple people to check out the store.

"Even if she's just paraphrasing the labels for now..." Izumi chuckled "She's alright. Plus, that bodyguard stuff can come in handy if someone tries to steal something. Good stuff."

"W-What do I do if someone tries to steal something?" Akira immediately asked.

"You tell them to put it back." Izumi shrugged. "Less problems so."

Akira nodded.

"Be extra careful with the foreigners." she added. She then looked at you apologetically. "Nothing personal. But non-japanese are the ones who are, well the cheekiest."

You nodded, sighing. "Yeah, I know.". Honestly, the States and other countries had higher crime rates, including petty things like shoplifting. It was only natural for this contrast to arise when you put the two peoples together.

---

Later that evening, a massive Doll and her owner arrived. You could hear Marcus whispering under his voice "This is one of those guuuys".

A whale.

You've heard the term be used in the past to refer to the people who dump massive amounts of money into freemium games. You figured that every industry had people like this. The guy next to the doll looked like the average striped-shirt glasses-wearing man who would be next to you waiting in line to buy bento. However, his Doll casted a much larger shadow. She was about 7 and a half feet tall from your estimations - most of it sheer legs, and the rest was all outrageous curves. Her hair had an intense, unnatural luster to it, and her skin was at par, looking overly smooth and 'perfect'.

After quietly bragging about how his "Miya's" resting heartrate was in the 20's and how he wanted to improve her further "in all aspects", he immediately ordered $300 worth of various growth and health treatments to be delivered to his house. He complimented Marcus on stocking of the usual stuff he usually needed to get from the shopping center, to then browse around the new store a bit more. Akira just stared at Miya, dumbfounded.

"Daijobu...Onee-chan?" Izumi asked her partner in her high-pitched tone, while discreetly kicking her shins. There were more customers.

"Ah-ah, sorry. I'll.. .uhm. Let's get back to work, yeah?" Akira replied sheepishly.

Marcus then called you over, and whispered to you to plead you to deliver this stuff to the guy. He didn't have a delivery service at all - he had just said yes to please the whale. You accepted, having offered to help him out after all, plus the whale's house was close to your own.

"He's just standing there." Marcus then hissed. "Get him to buy more stuff."

"What?" you replied.

"Like, get to know what he wants or what we can do for him." he said. "I'll put the resources and anything you need, but I need you to apply your expertise. You know a bit more about this than me - you're the technician."

"Alright." you said. "I'll see what I can do."

It felt sorta realistic for the everyday weirdness that retail tends to bring. Except this time the iPod's questioning its own existence.

Computer brains riding pig cortex and chimeral viscera wrapped in human skin as the main product of the setting just adds a more immediate touch of the surreal.

Also goddamn Miya's the true definition of Titty Monster. Clydesdale scale cuddle beast with a topping of industrial farm hormones and aftermarket augments. Someone Miya's size will need help with their heart, lungs and joints.

Reminds me of the "Dear My Ushi Chichi" series character of Abrams who was engineered for twice the potency of the domestic Japanese chattel humanoids.

You approached the whale guy, after Marcus's indications to do so. He looked like your typical Japanese salaryman, but in casual clothing.

"Hello, I'm Blake. I'm the guy who will deliver your purchases." you said, chipper. "I do Doll repair work and it always makes me happy to see a well-cared for Doll."

Miya gently bowed in gratitude.

The man nodded sheepishly. "A pleasure." he said to you, as you mutually gave a short bow. "I'm... Kumamoto. But everyone knows me as Kuma. I... I think you're on the Doll-Lovers forum, aren't you?"

You smiled warmly. "Yes, I am!" you mentioned. You frequented that forum quite a bit, and you couldn't remember any Kuma-san person in particular. Given his personality shown here, you assumed he mustn't be overall talkative.

"So, you're ambitious with Dolls, yeah?" you asked.

"Well, yes." he said, and scratched his nape. "Miya's, well... My hobby. How about you?"

You knew that he must've been already familiar with that you're a Doll freelancer if he knew you from the forum. So this latter question had to be something he just did out of courtesy and rapport.

"...Dolls are my hobby too." you admitted, using 'hobby' as a very loose term. "But my job as well, of course."

He chuckled. "I see. Akira, over there. She is your Doll, yes?"

"Yeah."

(cont)
>>
"Her eyepatch is pretty fashionable." he said. You couldn't tell if he was being honest or sliding a jab into you after you said that you had a Doll hobby just like this. "It compliments her style well."

"Well. She's got a faulty eye. I'm looking to repair that. Eventually." you stated.

"Ah, I see." he replied.

You continued to talk to the consistently tranquil but underhand-jabbing Japanese man. Along telling you his goals of having Miya "improve" as far as she can go, after you conversed with him a bit, he did mention about other "whales". Part of his motivation to improve Miya was simply competition. There were others with much more impressive Dolls than his, and he wanted to surpass them with his champion. Due to that Dolls are sometimes a bit of an embarrassing deal for the kind of people who whale into them, they tend to keep the venues through the which they communicate, share pictures and experiences (and compete) to themselves.

You understood that while you were able to get out of him the valuable info of how his kind of spender operated, he wouldn't let you into in, unless you were truly an equal, hence the jabs. You had to be someone who whaled as well.

Of course there were other, more open Doll eccentrics of course, who publicly post around what they're all about. But from your experience, they're already saturated in offers and deals from the companies they buy from, and people looking to kiss their ass for extra cash.

---

"So, how has work been, Akira?" you asked, as you tugged the Doll closer to you, with her responding by holding you tighter as well.

"It's been good." she said. "Izumi's... she's nice. She tells me what I need to do. Sometimes she kicks me though, but only when I get distracted."

"Like with Miya?" you guessed.

"Y-Yeah." she said. "Izumi also scares me a bit. Like, she can be so cute and innocent one second, and then BAM - you've got the real Izumi."

"Marcus likes it though." she shrugged. "He calls it 'gap-moe'. Do you know gap-moe?"

"Yeah. Like tsunderes and yanderes and all the -deres, yeah?"

"Yeah yeah, that." she chuckled.

---

You continued to talk with Akira about her good times at work. Eventually, when you asked her about what she would like to do with the money, she replied that she would like to buy you something, or something that is needed. You insisted, and asked her about what she would get in the case that she didn't need to worry about that.

"I'd... improve myself, I guess." she sheepishly admitted, giving herself a quick look, and then looking aside.

---

You decide to contact Mary through the instant messaging on your phone as you continued to cuddle with Akira in bed.

After some greeting and sharing how're you're doing, Mary eventually revealed that she had finally made her choice on what Doll to get.

"It's going to be an average-sized, short-haired guy." she said. "Someone with a face like...."

She continued off to describe a young male in detail. One that was just like you.

"But that's just like me." you replied into your phone.

"I know." she replied. "I'm pathetic like that."

You knew that a Doll like that would come in for fairly cheap, because of how standard it was. Between 5 and 8 thousand dollars - which meant between 500 and 800 extra bucks for you, with your 10% cut.

But fuck. A Doll just like you? No one of those K-pop stars she gushed all over social media. You. You.

Was this some kind of prank?

You've never been asked out before by anyone. You haven't asked anyone out either, hence why you've never had a girlfriend before, ever. Or, well, a non-doll girlfriend.

You were in a relationship with Akira, weren't you?

I suppose we really don't have a clear relationship with Akira: She's kinda our girlfriend, kinda not. If Mary is cool with Akira (and I think she would be) then why not both?
>>
>>981141
Ah so you're a haremfag. In that case your opinion is literally worthless.
>>
>>981126
She's a doll. I'd rather try something with a person than a doll. At least have practice with casual dating with people.
>>
>>981163
>your opinion is literally worthless.
So is yours. The entire point of sex is reproduction so I would gladly choose someonewe could have children with over someone we can't and Akira entire goal in life is to make us happy anyway.
>>
>>981141
Umm, she learns from the society around her, which does. Note her noteing and emulating the couple last night.

Fair point but I'd still rather have a relationship with a normal human than a doll. I find the MC's doublethink rather interesting

It literally is.
>>

Should've read that sooner.
This Medfag does not like that.
Though good to know I'm not alone in GMT+1.
>>
>>981252
The quest format does tend to result in some very loosely held together characters. I think it works best when the MC is supposed to be a bit of a mess. Adding in big ethical questions too is just going make things even more interesting/disjointed.
>>
>>981175
Does somebody still care about the purpose of sex when they only want to have sex for fun this days?
>>
>>981329
If you are not overthinking it the purpose IS the most fun.
>>
I just want Akira to be happy.
>>
>>981346
Ditto.

We can just program her to be happy.

That some terrible grammar.
Also nothing is better than sex in the missionary position between a married couple for the sole purpose of reproduction.
>>
>>981359
How about I pump you full with pills for the same effect?
Doesn't this raise any ethical questions for you?

I want her to find happiness in her own. Fucking with her programming would only make it creepy if she's suddenly happy all the time or happy after certain triggers we choose
>>
>>981366
I'm not a man made product, hombre. Although I was being facetious, the point still stands that dolls currently don't have the same rights, as >>981371 said.
>>
>>981365
Yeah, lacking a coma.
Nice meme by the way. Pregnancy risk sex is great though, especially if you're both straining against it, knowing it really is a bad idea.

Said he drops dead around 3.00AM, so seems it's time.
>>
>>981371
>>981387
So, rights are more important?
The doll further up clearly recognised himself as a person. Doesn't advanced cognition make one a person? The ability to differentiate a mirror image from yourself, to know the principles of action an reaction.
They might not be human in the strict sense, but they are individuals and have sentience and that should be terrifying to you.
>>
>>981252
>It literally is.
When was the last time you had sex for the purpose of reproduction?
>>
>>981371
Ethics inform laws, not the other way around.
>>
>>981406
I think they should have about as much rights as a pet or a computer. They have programmable personalities. They're pretty much manufactured sub-humans or slaves. I would value a human's emotions above a doll's, and wouldn't let a doll's get in the way of a human's as well.
>>
>>981483
You can also "reprogram" a human's personality.
>>
>>981483
I think a pet is about right, no one yells at you for kicking a computer besides wasting perfectly good hardware. Kicking a dog however will get you in deep shit. You have an ethical duty to take care of them, physically and mentally. I think if they weren't made of flesh there wouldn't be nearly as much argument about ethics though.
>>
>>981500
Oh yea, totally forgot you could just plug in a USB in the back of my head and program me to think ball-busting and asphyxiation is cool.
>>
>>981406
>So, rights are more important?
Yes actually. Rights are more important.
As for the rest of what you said. There is a good reason laws only apply to "human" people.

>>981439
Guess my fetish.
>>981483
The funny thing you could probably kill a doll with a raygun.
>>
>>981533
You're a fucking idiot. You can alter a person's personality through something as simple as suggestion. Advertizments do it every day. Just because they don't use a USB to do it doesn't mean that it's not an alteration to your psyche.
>>
>>981575
The difference being changing complex human psychology and a literal switchboard. If a person were to choose it, a doll could have almost no real control over how they act.

For all of you out there trying to get her to reconsider, hey, this is her life and not really our business, let her spend her money. If her doll looking like us makes her feel happy or she gets a BF out of it or whatever let her, plus we get cash money but only IF she buys it.

>>981703

>It seems like Val manages to make every choice a real moral dilemma i love it.
They're not reflected in the setting, though. Setting aside all the programming of ethics issues inherent in AI aside, just the existence of humanlike AI in humanlike bodies would be a thermonuclear philosophical bombshell. Yet we're not seeing any trace of social upheaval or discontent, people are just treating what amounts to slavery as "some otaku thing".
Nowhere near enough time has past in-setting for things to have calmed down, yet they're utterly placid and all the moral issues are being left to some no-name to decide for himself on a per-issue basis.
There should be extremely extensive laws in place, because no politician would be left in place if he didn't jump on slavery 2.0 and get a word in on behalf of the people who elected him.

It's pissing me off because it's trash worldbuilding. Rule fucking one of sci-fi is to consider the impact your fictional what-ifs would cause and none of that's being shown here.
>>
>>982703
It's reflected in how they're built though. A pile of farmed donor organs with only enough meat-brain (because that's what's important right? If it's not meat it's not people!) to keep the heart beating and hormones from going completely wonky (look up Anencephaly some time if you want to know what you'd get if you shut down or removed the computer part of one of these dolls). Crispr has been mentioned to be a thing and potentially a market ended for organ manufacturers, potentially leading them to lobby heavily in favor of Dolls to keep themselves afloat. When a big phramaceutical company has nothing left to lose, they can lean damn hard on politicians. Government is clearly playing a bigger role in peoples lives as well, and a number of regulations are being relaxed. Japan went from having very stringent immigration laws and almost no rights for non-citizens to basically importing people into a socialist dream land where all their basic needs are paid for by the state (in theory at rock bottom prices due to new tech and project housing). As far as I can see this is a kind of soft-cyberpunk setting with mega-gov instead of mega-corp.

Yet there would be people with a problem with Dolls, some cultures just don't like the idea of meat-puppets for some reason, and some are just fine with (reactionaries vs otaku). Same with eating a cheeseburger in India VS in the USA. Different groups have different sacred cows (sacred waifus in the case of otaku?)

It's not bad world building, you're just on the side of this worlds equivalent of PETA (PETD?). Of course you can't imagine how people could savor the taste of dead flesh flayed from an intelligent, empathetic creature who suffered for most of their brutally short life to slake the blood lust of inhuman monsters! When you see it like that, it's kinda hard to imagine there not being outrage huh? Yet cheeseburgers and chicken nuggets are still a thing you'll find in every grocery store.

Sometimes people just don't give a fuck.
>>
>>980706
>You were in a relationship with Akira, weren't you?
No. We have an infertile pet that looks human.

>Tell her that this is the wierdest confession you've ever heard, but that you can give things a go with her.

Maybe she wants weir/d/ stuff though. If so, give it a try.
>>
>>982703
That is because it wasn't presented as "your new revolutionary not!human companion!" but more like "Apple presents, the product that will tie your home together, the magical, intelligent, completely reliable iDoll". It looks at a glance like anything that has gone before and no-one cares. Really, very few people care about onything in general. This lack of interest is completely believable.
>>
>>982855
>No. We have an infertile pet that looks human.
So we are not in a relationship because she is not human and we can't reproduce? What about if she had a fluffy tail, would it be a relationship then? Where do you draw the line? Are emotions a thing?
>>
>>982910
You sound like a horse fucker. If you are, I'm quite sure this argument won't change your mind.
we are not in a relationship because you can't assume some freak assembly of pig brain and electronics that displays the mental ability of a kid can display any thought beyond "boys are icky", unless it's coded into it. It's a robot with no free will or it isn't in any relationship with us.
>>
>>982703
I should've given more backstory, yeah, but there are difficulties because I run Doll Quest as a Quest instead of a Novel. I already have planned to add more background info, however, due to the limited time economy I have to write each update, I prioritize giving the players interesting gameplay (represented in the options and the results of their choices, and the following compelling situation) and giving juuuust enough world building to allow them to make a well-informed, yet not overly convoluted choice.

In a novel you don't need to prioritize the gameplay factor, so its easier to tailor the circumstances and the story to whatever you need, for example, backstory.

Another reason is that each backstory element carries a really heavy and interesting punch. So I don't want to overload people with exposition and required-reading-to-play too much, while at the same time spreading out the "wow" factor accordingly.

However, I'd like to give you some important background info because you deserve it in order to better understand Doll Shop's world.

Dolls have arisen very gradually. Its kind of like a Ship of Theseus situation, which is why they still have 'object' rights. We had very convincing AI, but that wasn't entirely human, so that's still just a computer right? Add a liiittle bit of human-like intelligence. That is still pretty much a computer, right? Not a real human, just a machine emulating one. Add a liiittle bit more. Is that human now?

So, while for the protagonist the Dolls are very much human, the general public still consider them to be just very advanced tamagotchis (a view which is further reinforced by Doll companies and their lobbying/advertising because nobody would let them get away with selling 'real' humans).

You're right now at that Ship of Theseus tipping point (more or less, its still pretty ambiguous, but definitely "more" than "less"). Dolls are starting to become more mainspread and the general public is starting to realize how human these things really are. Its already been mentioned that Blake's endgame is to help shape the world and its view on Dolls, and THIS moment in time (give or take a couple of years) is the best time to do that molding because you're at the tipping point (or just before it). Hence why I chose the quest's setting to happen at this precise moment.

In a clearly teasing tone :
" You know if you wanted to just ask me out you can. Oh or did you want more control on the personality? I can pretend to be hypnotized pretty well of you're into that sort of thing."

And then if she still isn't denying it and in a more serious tone:
"If you're worried about Akira, we'll...I'm not really sure about where I stand in that relationship. How about we put the order on hold for the moment and you can come over and we can talk it over. See what it is exactly that everyone wants. I promise that no matter what, I'll still be your friend, and if you want it I'll still put in whatever doll order you want."

You're assuming. We as players do not have enough information about her to say one way or the other. By talking it out, we'll see if that's even on the table as a possibility.
