You’ve since resolved to rendezvous with Crow and the others at the nearest entrance to Tethiss’s Claw, high above. You’ve equipped some different gear, as well – trading out what of your equipment suffered the curse to whatever else you have on hand. Currently, you wield your old scimitar and wear leather boots; additionally, you slide the earthsea royal signet ring onto one of the fingers of your right hand, feeling a momentary humming in your mind upon doing so.

Thus, you depart up the slopes from the Calamity Rift.

“I’m not convinced.”

There’s a long, deliberate stall. You pause in your tracks and look over your shoulder at Freya, who cocks an eyebrow at you, folding her arms.

“You’re not convinced about what, now?” She asks.

“You’re inviting me to join Freakshow, and I’m not really feeling the pitch.” You respond, giving a dismissive gesture. “You haven’t really told me why I should get involved with you – just why I shouldn’t get involved with the Alliance. You’re not lacking confidence, are you?”

“What? Never.” Freya responds. “I’m marketing to my target audience – you just happen to be a hard sell. How else could someone rub shoulders with the likes of both the Guardians and the Writ Keepers and remain guildless? I merely didn’t want to waste time feeding you impertinent information. But, if you prefer…”

“That’s enough. What does your guild actually want to achieve?” You ask. “Because orchestrating an attack on Averron City was not exactly what I’d call good PR.”

“That was a regrettable incident, yes.” She looks unperturbed. “Anaximander was rather heavy-handed in his approach – though he wanted to make a statement, and was rather successful in doing so. To be quite honest? I’m not even sure I understand now what he once hoped to achieve. The fact of the matter, though, is that we’ve secured peace.”

You’ve secured peace?” You shoot her an incredulous look.

“Averron at large now knows the consequences of player-versus-player combat. They understand how to conduct themselves in matters where the Nameless are concerned,” She glances at you with a grin. “Most important, though, is that they have someone to fear.”

She scoffs when your expression doesn’t change. “No one wants to hear the truth,” she continues. "You must admit: what we represented then does well now to keep the population of this place away from each others' throats."

“Peace in Averron is tenuous at best.” You respond. "Still."

“Is that the way you see it?” Freya asks. “From my point of view, things have been rather stable. In fact, the only one who’s made a power play thus far is Liza.”

You shake your head. You don’t really have a lot to say to that one. An icy tingling runs across the back of your head from ear to ear a moment later, indicating that your Artifact is once again ready for use. It’s an exhausting climb, but the mouth of the cave you departed from to this deep, hellish branch of the Underground is just a ways further overhead. You think you can hear voices...

How will you pass the last of the time?

What Freakshow did was create a greater division between nameless and identified. I'd be interested in working with Freakshow only in the interest of unity. And if possible I'd like to create an artifact that can restore the UIs of nameless players.

Maybe say something about how unity in Averron is only going to get more and more important as we come into contact with the other cities in the near future

You're right that I'm not a fan of the Alliance's methods, but I want to bridge the gap rather than create a greater division between nameless and identified.

Visions of years spent in exile torment your mind as you meditate on the power of Strife Memoriam. Your teeth grit instinctively, and tears well up in your eyes. In a mere instant, you offer your whole self – years of your life – to serve a kingdom that, in the end, condemns you to death as punishment for your grace.

Your hand tightens into a fist. Your sword is inexorable. Someone will pay.

“We’re nearby,” Freya says, looking to you suddenly. “I believe I can hear them in the distance. Are you alright?”

“Yeah.” You respond, shaking your head. “I was wondering – why did you join Freakshow?”

“I had aspirations – but like you, I also had doubts.” Freya gives a long pause, then a bit of a sigh. “These opportunities that the elite have access to in Averron? I wanted to partake. But as you’ve seen yourself, it’s not a matter of merit to do so – merely luck and proper connections. And I was downtrodden by the Crimson Guardians and their hegemony; I wasn’t right for them, allegedly. So I had no place to call my own, a fate I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”

“Then?”

“He saw my potential.” She says, giving you a flat look. “Of course, I didn’t disappoint. I became his second in command – discerned the method behind his madness – and when he quit, no one was more suited to take the helm.”

“Your guild widened the gap between Nameless and Identified.” You shoot her a bit of a glare. “You’re right that I’m not a fan of the Alliance’s methods, but I’m hoping to get us all to work together in the interest of unity – which I have a feeling is going to be very important with us coming into contact with more cities.”

“Our actions have always been in the interest of equality, Ascheritte. Though some choose to look down upon us for playing by the rules that this game has already set in place.” She says, extending a hand to help you up the next set of rocks; you accept, though mentally double-checking to ensure it’s her right hand. “We are leaders, you know, but some in Averron are not content with mere leadership. They are not interested in creating unity,” Freya continues, “They are interested in deciding what unity represents.”

You cross over the lip of the cliff face, unsteady on your feet – though much more than in your dealing with cursed boots.

It’s quiet here. The mouth of the cave, which looks rather menacing from this side (knobbed and jagged stalagmites like chelicera at either end, inviting you into the poisoned bite of a fanged maw), is a short distance ahead. It’s dark within, though you can see rock shapes and spiderwebs illuminated faintly by bioluminescent flora along the walls and ceilings – and the silhouettes of humanoids, approaching in the distance.

Considering there's Daze, Stun, Weaken, Poison, AND curse on top of equipment penalties, and that it affects even physical states like crawling, Exile nullifies a huge chunk of maluses and enables some extremely unrealistic fighting styles.

“ASHE!” Someone shouts from a great distance in front of you – and you see one of the shadows crack a fluorescent torch to light. It’s your group: Aelriss, Tatsumaki, Smith, and Crow, all looking a little bit worn down – well, Tatsumaki looks a little angry, and the others look a bit worn down. You and Freya wait in the light, and the four of them pick up the pace a bit to meet you.

“Scrapbook! Lady Grey!” Crow folds his arms, wearing a wide, confident grin. His hair is down, which, in his bruised and beaten state gives him a bit of an ‘outcast warrior’ look that belies his likely level of injury. “You have no idea how glad I am to see you.”

“Were you not the one that wanted to bail as soon as things got bad?” Aelriss asks, looking at Crow over her shoulder as she moves to stand before you. The fringe of her cloak is in tatters, and she’s got rough cuts on her lower lip and beneath her eye.

“They’re a pair of Artifact users!” Crow sighs. “I had total faith in them, you know – I was just keeping the best interests of the group in mind.”

Tatsumaki gives a subdued groan.

“What they’re trying to say is that we’re happy you made it, Ascheritte.” Smith shakes his head. “I’m told that you succeeded in completing our mission, no less?”

“It’s all taken care of.” Freya says. “We met with a powerful foe, but Ascheritte’s protection was more than adequate for me to take the necessary actions.”

“What happened to your arm?” Aelriss asks, eyeing her suspiciously.

“To be honest?” Freya asks. The left sleeve of her garment is in tatters, and her arm – starting at the seal etched into her palm – is burned black, darker than her ashen skin, all the way to the elbow, terminating in a mess of strange, swirling figures like lapping flames. “I’m not entirely sure, though I am somehow eager to find out.”

“Sorry about all of the trouble, guys. I’ll watch my step next time and whatnot, but we’ve got bigger issues I think.” You make eye contact with each of them in turn. “How do we get back upstairs?”

“Tethiss’s Claw is a black spot on the best maps we’ve got.” Crow says. “There’s definitely a road to the top somewhere in there, but we’re not exactly in top combat shape – unless we wanted to stay on standby and watch Cat-Tats punch her way through everything in sight while the rest of us are bleeding out…”

“She was trying to help.” Aelriss barks. “You know anything about that?”

“What else have you got, Crow?” You ask. “My climbing-buff gear is cursed.”

“It’s that or the back roads: also rather uncharted, and almost certainly much worse going bottom-up than top-down.” He folds his arms. “No spiders, probably, but I can’t guarantee what is there.”

“This is how the best players die, you know.” Smith says. “From getting in too deep – landing in a location you shouldn’t be in with no way out. It’s never the fighting that kills; it’s the little mistakes, or what happens afterward…”

“Well,” Freya says. “Your confidence is appreciated, but do you mind keeping such thoughts to yourself for the time being? Crow, you’re the scout. What’s your suggestion?”

“We’ve got the advantage when it comes to scouting in either location. The Claw presents more obvious dangers, while the environment and lack of knowledge as to where we actually are is probably the biggest threat along the other route.” He says. “I’ll leave it up to you, but personally I don’t want to see another Araneid as long as I live.”

Aelriss scoffs – you know what she’s thinking: that might not be very long the way things are going.

“Ael.” You produce a Celestial Gem, barely able to hand it over to her in spite of all she’s done for you. It feels as if you’re parting with a piece of yourself. “I wanted to thank you for the save earlier.”

“Oh.” Aelriss responds, eyes sparkling as she accepts the gift with open palms. “T-thanks, Ashe.”

“Cute. I’m gonna have to start calling you Lovebird.” Crow says, not looking up from his screen. “You know, doves are a symbol of peace, which is pretty fitting for the pacifist in you…”

“Ever seen what happens when you attack a bird of paradise, Crow?” Tucking away the Gem, Aelriss folds her arms, looking over her shoulder at him. “You should try it sometime.”

“Oh, Tats – sorry if we caused you some trouble.” You ruffle her hair. “Like I said, I’ll try watching my step. We’re all alright now, right?”

“Mm.” She nods. “Okay.”

“Freya,” Smith says, “You said you met with a powerful foe, earlier?”

“Yeah, fought a boss.” You respond. “And a boss after the boss. This place is supposedly close to the Earthsea Promenade – we’re deeper than I think we think we are.”

“Closer now than ever to that place.” Freya adds.

“We’re still a long way off, you know.” Aelriss says. “The alliance guilds are still trying to accrue resources for the excavator, and Ayla’s tearing herself up over planning the build. That, and we need safety – this raid has proven how hard it is for us to get high numbers of people this far down.”

“Have the Observatory’s proprietors considered the possibility of teleportation, Ascheritte?” Smith asks.

“Haven’t even thought about it.” You respond. “But we’d need somewhere to go – an away base, or something, which means we’d need to find somewhere with an Altar to set up camp, as well as enough Gems to secure a facility.”

“Right next to you.” Crow chimes in. “You could take Tethiss’s Claw.”

You shudder. You could never plan such a thing, could you? What if she finds out?

“Do you know of a Precursor within, Crow?” Freya asks.

“Look on the forums, Lady – like I’m doing right now.” Crow responds, unperturbed. “What else would something called ‘Tethiss’ be in a place like this? Meanwhile, I’m thinking ‘great, a fucking spider queen, just what we need’.” He sighs. “Maybe I should join the Excavator project. This place sucks ass.”

“Tatsumaki will probably be eager to join you.” Smith says. “Tatsumaki?”

Tatsumaki nods.

“Ael?” You ask.

“Taking stock of the situation.” Aelriss says, now on her own UI as well. “Sorry – looks like there’s a lot going on. There’s a lot of picking up the pieces underway right now, since a lot of Players went down in the raid. Likewise, there’s some pretty huge arguments going on about bounty hunting that I’m trying to read; some controversial things are going on and people are starting to find it reprehensible.”

“Oh, lovely.” Smith sighs. “I can’t wait to see the Averron we’re going back to.”

As you call upon Strife Memoriam once more, you feel for a moment as if you have faded into the background. Silently, you watch as civilization grows and flourishes around you; silently, you obey as a golden age begins.

Some find your existence abhorrent; you are a strange creature, they believe, given false life by a madman toying with the forces of the universe. They show no respect, though you bear the weight of their kingdom on your shouiders.

You feel neither disappointment nor shame. You feel nothing. It is not your purpose to feel.

> With the Memory of Ruby, temporarily attack from a distance with destructive energy from Strife Memoriam.
> While active, significantly increases the user’s physical effect on their environment, improving the ease of feats of strength. No effect on damage of attacks.
> Strife Memoriam remains inactive for a short time after reallocating equipped Memories.

The forums have become home to a lot of threads cataloguing players who’ve fallen; rendezvous attempts for players whose whereabouts are unknown after the raid, as well as the fates of rare items and named or handcrafted equipment lost to the underground are rather commonplace, it seems.

There are not a lot of success stories.

Certainly, new arrivals present with a given frequency – but even though identified players respawn as nameless after their death, they are not guaranteed to spawn in or anywhere near Averron. Judging by what you once read online – on an imageboard – they aren’t even guaranteed to respawn in a city territory. You’ve heard stories of some who’ve just been cast alone into the Underground.

You get the sense that Averron’s population is smaller. It’s quiet and somewhat somber. Liza has had Mendicant, who appears to be in charge of the Guardians’ PR, update the city at large with the current status of the raid and related business.

There’s no word on a means of restoring life to a fallen Player, though discussion suggests that people now believe not even Artifacts can do so. Requests for such Artifacts, in fact, seem to be rewarded with strange and unique messages from the ‘Celestials’.

It doesn’t take you long to find the thread Aelriss is speaking of, either. It seems trouble’s come from a number of sources, the ‘my-word-against-yours’ scenarios you noted when you first faced Anaximander notwithstanding. Though player-versus-player combat has thankfully grown much less common, this decrease has led to some who seek a source of justified bloodshed in a place where justice isn’t easy to find. An entire branch of the forums has emerged, devoted to the swift removal of ninja looters, player killers, trolls and anyone deemed at large to be ‘problematic’.

Though doing so can’t be done anonymously, anyone could have a bounty placed on their head for any price.

You ration there’s no way to stop it, barring a single guild monopolizing control of entire zones and disabling PVP. Perhaps, you think, the power of Celestial Gems, in their luster and allure, could pose a different means of putting an end to it – though perhaps it’s these Gems that drives the Identified to hunt one another down in the first place.

You think about Candrence, the imposing Artifact user from the meeting at the Observatory before the raid. She's one of the esteemed bounty hunters - and it seemed she was quite proud of it. You're not sure about your place in any of this; you can't imagine what she'd have to say...

I'll probably continue tomorrow in the afternoon but it's been a super fucked-up day for me and I actually have to wake up relatively early, so I think I'm gonna call it for now.

Believe me when I say I wish I could do any sort of advance scheduling but things are hectic enough it's gonna be like this for a while if we're going to continue at all (read: I'm garbage). As usual, though, thanks for the replies!

Thanks for running BSO. See you next session.

I'm sad I wasn't part of the quest before you introduced Candrence, I had the idea of making a Not!Talon of Horus Artifact while I was going through the archive since it's more like a glove than any other Lighting Claw.
I'm just going to try making Tyberos' armor when I get the chance.

Hello friends, this looks nice. Before I start reading the entirety of this quest the question is:
Is the MC a shota? Or since the name sounds female the opposite?
This is very important.
>>
>>983008
>Ascheritte
>shota sounding name
uhh....while you technically aren't wrong to assume that, given the reference....

no, no he isn't a shota.
>>
>>983074
That's a lot of dots my man, should be careful around those sharp points.
>>
>>983008
If that matters to you, please fuck the right off.
>>
I can't tell if these weird feelings we're getting are due to our ??? skill or maybe subconscious effects of our artifact roughly shoving NPC memories into our mind.
>>
>>983252
Wow rude. Why are you so rude towards a joke? Too much time spent on a mongolian painting forum left you easily-angered?
>>
>>983194
Great scott, you're right!

I didn't even realize I used 4 dots rather than 3....

....oh no, I can't stop it. RUN, RUN BEFORE YOU ARE INFEC-

inb4 we get multiple personality disorder
>>
>>983348
On a serious note I'm worried about fighting telthiss, it seems like she can sort of influence our mind a bit. Hopefully that doesn't increase with proximity to her. It's weird that we're the only one affected.

Pbbbt.

Busy tomorrow. Will continue Friday. We'll presumably be in autosage by then so I'll just make a new thread.
>>
>>986018
Well it will be in sage since that starts at 72 hours, but the thread's nowhere near the 750 post autosage limit, so as long as it stays bumped until Friday and you make sure to announce every session this thread SHOULD (keyword should) be on the first page and good for another 5 days if you're counting from the Friday session.

I suppose it depends on you though. Do you have the time to host 4 more sessions in the next 6-7 days? If not then the thread doesn't matter.
>>
>>986543
Oops, if you make sure to announce every session after the Friday one everyone should be able to get to it. Don't know why I just added that in the middle there.
>>
>>986547
I just sort by last reply in the catalog anyway instead of bump order. It's a lot more useful that way for /qst/.

> [[ Perks ]] : When improving a Perk, select a technique associated with that Perk – once a selection is complete, either improve the effectiveness of that Perk, or gain a new chain technique.
Wtf is a chain technique?
>>
>>986561
moves like Concussive Strike, I think.

Either way, levelups are treated a bit differently now.
>>
>>986628
Yeah I think we missed out on seeing the changes when we just leveled up PP last time.
>>
>>986018
>Pbbbt.
what did he mean by this?
>>
>>986018
Damnit, going to miss everything again.
>>

I use 4chanx so threads with trips I've highlighted are always at the top for me. It does (as far as I can tell) make it impossible to actually tell what page a highlighted thread is on though.
Nice trips
>>
Creation date for me. That way you only scroll down to the last thread you've seen to see what's new.
>>
So, is a quest truly happening now?
>>
>>992600
Seems like no.

>Banished Quest is running
Shit, I really have no excuse now

I didn't think I'd be back in this late. I'll do a few updates tonight and a few tomorrow. Give me a moment...
>>
>>993255
new thread? I've been updating the TitanPad, btw
>>
>>993255
Nice
>>
>>993255
Sick. Don't know if I'll be able to force myself into watching the shitpost that is Banished Quest though.
>>
>>993313
The trick is to join in on the shitposting
>>
>>993321
I made it to thread 120 or something and gave up due to the shitposting. Cancer is cancer, there's no stoppin that
>>
>>993255
Also, I'm going to ask this question again since it never got answered: which class is better for my Techknight idea?

Of the two presented, I'm currently leaning towards Artificer.
>>
>>993431
migrate bois
>>
>>993369
I like Artificer too. It's hard to make a bad melee DPS that can self buff.
