The random wanderings of an autistic goat with a shovel and a bucket.
Previous: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=GFQ

Opening theme! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH3BpmtywJU

Leaving the outfitter’s with your new leather low boots feels very different from what you’re used to, having had just your socks for however long. You don’t know if these will last, but you didn’t have enough for proper traveling boots.

You don’t really care much. You have shoes now. Yay.

Udo told you that the adventurer’s guild was a place where you could make coin. More importantly, it sounds like you could find adventure there.

Which you think is something you’re maybe looking for?

If a place called ‘the adventurer’s guild’ didn’t have adventure, you would get a little mad.

Lulette appears on your shoulders again, balancing her plant against one of your horns and chewing a walnut. It’s late afternoon and the crowds of people are smaller, though they move away from Ashtia plodding alongside you anyway. Or maybe they’re moving away from the little Bushjack plant on your head? It looks scary, but also cute.

Cutescary. Scarycute.
>>
>>1011675

The guild is located at one of the corners of the market square and has big double doors for its entrance. The building isn’t very big itself, though when the four of you go inside it feels spacious. There isn’t any furniture other than some benches along the walls, and not much more than a dozen people standing around.

The adventurers look colourful, patchwork. The pieces of armour they wear over their clothes are often mismatched, and the weapons hanging at their waists or strapped to their backs look worn from use.

Some of them are shorter or taller, some have tails or claws or funny ears, and at least one is scaly. One young woman leaves as you enter and a big white owl perched on her shoulder hoots amicably at Ashtia, who puffs in response.

You look around and listen to the noisy chatter. They’re loud and rude, but when talking to each other they sound like old friends.

Across the room there’s a young lady behind a counter. You see someone approach her and present a little metal circle plus a big cloth bag dripping weird-smelling liquid. The lady takes both with a smile, counting and handing out coins in return.

There’s also a board with lots of squares of papers nailed to it on the wall to your left, with only a few people standing around looking at it.

Nnnn. Udo told you about this place, but didn’t tell you what to do here.

The board surely holds adventure aplenty but I think a little help will get us where we want to be much faster.

Pretty much this.
>>
Y'know this raises an important question. Can Baphy read?
>>
>>1011759
She strikes me as being able to read, but not necessarily know what the words mean.
>>
>>1011759
It has been mentioned that she's much older than she looks, but we don't really know what she was doing before she came to the ruins, so I think it could go either way.
>>
You walk over to the poster board, which takes your attention because there’s a really, really big poster in the middle of it.

It’s mostly a drawing of a wrinkled, scowling woman with rigid cheeks, stern eyes, and wavy shoulder-length hair. The words below look kinda weird and you have some problems reading them, but you think it says she’s called the Witch Of Crows, she lives in the swamp to the west, and the reward for catching or killing her is two thousand gold coins.

That sounds like a lot of coins. There’s also smaller rewards for reporting the locations of her totems or something.

You don’t think crows live in a swamp. You wonder what does live in a swamp. Maybe crocodiles?

The more normal-sized posters don’t seem that different. One says the apothecary is paying for live Fire Eels, with a note saying to avoid their puddles of oil. Another one with a picture of a big angry-looking snake with fins saying someone saw a Bakunawa whelp in the swamp, and it needs to be killed before it gets big.

Swamp swamp swamp. You guess that around Wervik, the swamp is where most of the stuff happens. You do see a poster about hiring guards to Silvercrest, which sounds like a city.

You notice a young man next to you who was also looking at the board is now looking at you instead with a curious expression. Maybe he hasn’t seen a goat before.

>Stare at that adventurer.

Seems the obvious roleplaying choice.

We should ask about the fire eels though. I bet we can do that fairly easy, maybe killing the baby snake thing but I doubt we are ready for the bigger stuff yet.
>>
>>1011795
So far, I feel we're more druid-y in that we try to stay out of conflict in particular unless absolutely necessary. With regards to the wolf/lion thing, of course.
>>
>>1011828

I just said killing it because thats what the sign said. In character you are right and I would suggest asking about it b/c we are just curious, maybe we want to know why they want to kill it, but yea I didnt mean asking about killing the snake as a character move for baphy, just meant get more info about it.

Ashtia walks up to someone with a gray bushy tail and canine ears and barks, making the poor girl flinch.

You turn and look back at the young man. He looks like the other adventurers in outfit though his armour is more on the minimal side, and has a sword on his belt.

With a finger he brushes his messy black hair to the side, which really do anything because it’s short.

“There’s something... special, about you,” he half-murmurs absently, brows furrowed in thought.

You lift Lulette off your shoulders and hold her out with both hands. Lulette, nonplussed, lifts her clay pot and holds it out in her hands. The little Bushjack opens its mouth.

“No, no,” the adventurer says. “You have something. I can sense it.”

You tilt your head to the side, Lulette and her plant following. You don’t think you have anything special...

You place the fairy back on your shoulders, thinking. Placing your bucket onto the ground and reaching into it, you pick up the small metal box. You pull its lid off and look at the shiny rock and wooden figurine inside.

The young swordsman’s eyes boggle at the latter.

“Yes! Yes, that’s it! Let me see, let me see!”

You blink, take out the figuring and balance its circular base on your palm.

“Blade Dancer Kleioci’s Twelfth Autumn Festival Limited Edition Figurine! I knew my nose wouldn’t lead me astray!”

You have no idea what he’s talking about. To you, it looks like a lacquered wooden figure of a pointy-eared sword-lady wearing armour that doesn’t seem as protective as armour should be.

The adventurer is really, really energetic. Others are starting to stare.

“Constance? Constance, the hell are you doing?” A voice comes from behind you, which the man completely ignores.

“The craftsmanship! The graceful poise of her stance! The outfit showing just the right amount of skin!” His expression grows hard, staring at you. “Name your price, little girl!”
>>
>>1011945

Before you can respond with ‘two hundred shovels and a new bucket’, a woman with reddish-brown skin and small horns on her forehead walks up and grabs the adventurer by the shoulder.

“Constance you idiot, leave her alone.”

“I need this. Do you not see that I need this, Isava?!”

“Nope,” the young woman responds.

Another man, lanky with blonde hair in a short ponytail and long pointy ears, taps your shoulder. “Sorry miss, my friends can get a little excited.” He looks up. “Constance, we barely have silvers to our name. You can’t pay her even if you wanted to.”

Constance stops, raising a finger. He pulls the string of a small brown bag at his waist, then somehow stuffs his entire forearm into it without breaking the cloth.

“Wait, wait a second.” He takes out a clean, flat gray stone painted with dull green ink. A thin leather strip is belted around it and has more markings, though more rigid in design. “I’ll give you this for it!”

Isava looks like she was struck. “Are you bloody serious-”

“Just hold onto it and you can toughen yourself up or make a weapon hit like a giant’s club,” Constance says very, very quickly. “I swear it’s really easy, and useful for literally everything. You won’t regret it, little girl!”

The horned girl looks mad. You’re kinda scared. The rock sounds cool, though...

You hold out your wooden figurine very slightly and Constance takes it while pressing the marked stone into your hand, small enough to fit into your palm.

“Hahah! Yes! Thank you little girl!”

Isava looks very, very angry. You make a soft, nervous, wavering ‘maaah’ noise while hugging the stone to your chest.

“Are you freakin’ kidding me? That was six gold! Do you remember how bloody long it took to save for?!”

Constance turns and looks at his companion, guileless. “Yes. And it was worth every coin.”

Isava completely loses it. The tall man with pointed ears grabs her from under her arms and locks his own vertically, holding the raging horned girl back.

“Wait- Isava- property damage-”

“LET GO IKAROS I’M GOING TO TURN THAT BASTARD INTO PASTE !!”

“Constance!” The lanky man shouts very fearfully. “Constance get the hell out of here I CAN’T HOLD HER MUCH LONGER-”

Constance grabs your hand and shakes it ecstatically, making Lulette hold onto one of your horns for balance. “You really, seriously won’t regret it, you have my word!”

Then, a few seconds before Isava breaks free and rampages forth like a herd of bulls, the young adventurer bolts out the door.

There’s a growing silence as the horned girl’s cursing starts fading into the distance. Then Ikaros snaps out of it, picks himself up off the ground and runs out after his two companions.

“That happened,” Lulette opines from atop your shoulders. Ashtia is by your side again, seeming amused by recent events.

... You probably don’t want the young swordsman to get eaten. You drop the stone into your bucket and pick it up, then chase after the adventurers.

You follow the faint sound of Isava’s maddened yelling, the contents of your bucket clanking as you run until you reach a tall, lonely tree at the edge of town. The horned girl is staring up into the thick leaves of the tree, ignoring Ikaros next to her with his hands out in a placating gesture.

“GET THE HELL DOWN! THIS WILL ONLY HURT A LOT!”

Silence.

A shaky, high pitched voice. “Tweet. Tweet.”

Isava smashes her fist into the trunk of the tree, shaking it and eliciting a yelp.

You put your bucket and shovel on the ground. You take small steps, slowly bringing yourself next to the angry lady.

“Umm-”

She glances at you. You’re a lot shorter than her. “What?” The word thuds like a stone. Her eyes are a smouldering orange.

You tremble. “If you want,” you say, holding out the object you had clutched to your chest, “you can have my shiny rock?”

The horned girl clicks her tongue and goes back to staring at the tree. “No, I bloody don’t. I have an idiot to murder. Get lost!”

“O- Oh.”

She doesn’t want it.

Isava flinches. “Ah- Uh-”

Sniff.

“W- Wait, wait, no no no! Ah- I wasn’t- I wasn’t being serious! Umm- It’s really pretty!”

“Really?”

You look up at her, and she nods quickly.

“Yes! Yes, really!”

“You’re not mad at me?”

“Ah- Of- Of course not! There’s no way, why would I be mad at you?”

“And Constance?”

“We’re friends! Friends, great friends! We’re just playing around. Right, Constance?”

The young man pokes his head out from behind the thick leaves of the tree, blinking. “Err- Yes? Yeah, of course.”

Isava bends down to eye level with you, stroking your hair as gently as one treads on ice and looking a bit frantic. “No-one’s mad, nothing bad’s happening. I promise. Okay?”

You nod, happier.

From somewhere behind you, Lulette whispers to Ashtia.

That'll be all for today! This ended up a little bit silly, but hope everyone had fun!

I'll do a similar session most likely tomorrow - any changes to that plan I'll post on twitter about.

The plan for next time is Baphy and her circus joins Constance/Isava/Ikaros at the cheaper inn mentioned way earlier. There was interest in some of the posters so Baphy will ask about that stuff, though if you have suggestions you can throw them at me now!

Also an apology for the hiccup mid session - I'm vaguely following this list http://members.tripod.com/lord_eadric/netequip.html to get a sense of values (though my denominations are different), but I have no feel for the economics of this world at all.

Magical items should be very valuable though.

Depending on a skill check the item will likely be stronger with Baphy, but she's not a greedy goat. You guys can decide then.

...

The Mud Boar Inn is still fairly quiet at sunset, with men and women only just starting to stream in and take tables. There's someone behind the counter cleaning a mug and greeting visitors, and one of the assistants or barmaids pokes at the large fireplace set into one wall.

You find yourself seated in one corner of the room with the three adventurers you met, sipping something cold and sweet from a big wooden mug. Ashtia left on her usual hunt a little while ago, and you think Lulette is still in the room.

You can’t quite tell because she’s invisible, but every now and then you hear someone yelp.

You ask questions about the adventurer’s guild. Isava is busy looking sheepish and Constance is busy casting her timid glances, so it’s the pointy-eared Ikaros that answers you.

You learn that joining the guild just involves completing one of their listed requests, but only simpler ones are available for non-members. It counts if you’re accompanying a guild member though, and on finishing the request the lady behind the counter will give you a little badge as proof of membership.

When you take a request from the guild they’ll give you a token, a little circular piece of metal, and you have to hand that in when you’re done to get the reward.

This group of three took the Bakunawa whelp bounty, the reward for which is apparently nine gold pieces. Which makes you wonder about the Witch Of Crows, whose bounty was something really big.

Ikaros shakes his head. “That hunt’s been going for almost a year and a half now, and the Baroness has been getting a lot of criticism for spending manpower on it. The witch has been in the Talon Marshes the entire time, but nobody’s actually seen more than her totems and her familiars. It’s a wild goose chase.”

That doesn’t make sense. The Witch Of Crows wouldn’t be a goose.

> Plan?

[ ] Join these three on their Bakunawa thing.
[ ] Go back to the guild in the morning, and maybe try the Fire Eels catching.

(That's pretty unanimous. Wriiting.)

We should also ask them about the item we traded for, maybe attach it to the shovel for maximum bonking

I don't think Baphy is really meant to be an adventurer. Bounty hunting and stuff seems too violent and greedy for her tastes.
We should try to wild empathy the whelp to go away or something.

Baphy is a Druid. The last thing a druid should be doing is killing magical creatures for money.
If anything Baphy would make a good travelling medicine seller or something.
Just wandering around, exploring, learning, helping people and making new friends in bizarre situations.
>>
>>1015118
But these guys are her new friends!

Besides, it could be a mean magic creature, not all creatures are as nice as our wolf or that tree lion thing.
>>
Either way, you think this where you want to start your career as a wandering shovel-goat.

“Can I come along for the Bakunawa thing?”

“Sure,” Constance replies, “more the merrier.”

Isava seems more hesitant, absently touching the base of one of her horns. “I’m not sure if that’s a great idea.”

You look at the horned girl, tilting your head.

“Ah- I mean, it could be dangerous.”

“It’ll be fine. Just a whelp anyway, right? Give it a good punch and we could haul the whole thing back between just two of us. Sell it as a pet.”

Isava frowns at her companion with narrowed eyes. “The request has been up for a while. Weren’t you saying it might be bigger now?”

“Well, I wouldn’t complain if it was. Might let us argue for more coin.” Constance says optimistically.

One way or another it’s accepted that you’re going to tag along with them tomorrow, and you tune out a little when their conversation continues. There’s more people now, and as sunset turns to dusk the inn’s ambiance becomes lively with talk and drink.
>>
>>1015118
We can see how things go when we meet the creature, right? Maybe we'll be able to convince it to stop hunting people or whatever it is that it was doing.

There’s a bit of a pause when Ashtia walks in, plodding over and laying down on the floor next to your feet, but the disturbance is short-lived.

You reach down into your bucket and fetch the stone Constance gave you, examining it. Lulette appears on your shoulders with the familiar weight of her pot on your head.

“Can’t you wake it up?”

You glance up at the fairy and see the teethy little plant instead. “Just talk to it,” Lulette’s bell-like voice says from behind the Bushjack.

You turn the stone around in your hands. You noticed before, but the markings on the belt around it look very different from the ink on the stone itself. Sharp and angled against flowing, organic.

Ashtia reaches up to your lap and pokes the stone with her snout, and the dark green ink glows briefly. You catch a gentle humming from the object; very, very quiet.

yeah, but like I said, we should at least try to diplo it before killing.

Just the whole thing of going to a guild to get contracts to kill stuff to get tokens which can be exchanged for money seems too needless, political and complicated for our little autist.

Why am I supposed to kill these people/things?
Why do I need alot of money?
Why do I care about being some rich guy's bodyguard?
Why can't I just be a innocent, peaceful nature girl without people telling me what to do?

I'm not trying to retcon. I'm just saying that the only reason she's going along with this whelp thing because these people are interesting and she doesn't have anything else to do atm.
But bounty hunting and bodyguarding don't seem like things that she should do on a regular basis.

66 is still good.

Mostly agreeing with trying to Diplo/Wild Empathy the thing away. Bathy doesn't strike me as a warrior-type.

You trace the belt around the stone, unclasping it and placing the marked leather onto the table then listening carefully. The tune is faint, but you can follow it when you close your eyes and start humming yourself.

Slow, sleepy.

There’s a connection. A flow of intangible feeling, back and forth. You prod at it gently, and a warmth like a morning sunbeam replies. The tune follows yours to a mellow end.

You open your eyes and see the ink on the stone glowing lightly. The cheerful noise of the inn comes back, though the three adventurers you’re with are looking at you curiously.

“You’re a-” Isava starts, then glances up at the fairy on your head and down at the wolf by your side. “No, nevermind. That should’ve been obvious.”

You hand the stone to Lulette, who digs it half into the dirt at the side of her clay pot. The Bushjack bites the intruder, achieving nothing.

>

Identified the stone as an Oakbark Wild Infusion. Once per scene Baphy can use it to toughen her body or weapon for a very short duration. She needs to be close to the Infusion to activate it, though actual contact is unnecessary.

Using the Infusion too often may exhaust the spirit.

Not needing it, you give the small leather belt back to Constance to store in the bag at his waist. A little afterwards a barmaid comes over and places food onto your table, which was apparently ordered while you weren’t paying attention.

You’re given a dish of charbroiled rabbit with boiled potatoes and celery. You pick up a metal fork and jab it into the rabbit meat, attempting to stuff it into your mouth before realising the entire piece doesn’t fit. Isava seems to choke on something, hiding her face.

It has a tender and subtly earthy taste, accompanied by something fresh and slightly peppery.

You fill your mug with a nearby pitcher afterwards and watch Lulette carry the watering can from out of your bucket. She takes a bit to pry the lid off, then hovers over her Bushjack on the table and showers it with the purified liquid, the plant swaying side to side sedately.

You spend the rest of the evening dozing to the bustling of the inn, kept aware by the occasional shouts and bursts of laughter. It’s pleasant, and as time passes the patrons retreat to their rooms or homes and the noise fades away.

Ikaros asks about your lodgings, which you don’t have, so you end up following Isava to her room. She says you can take the bed, but you end up curling up next to Ashtia on the cool timber flooring, falling asleep to the big fluffy wolf’s rhythmic breaths.

Still need to introduce her to the others.

I'm going to end it here for this thread. Thank you all for showing up and participating!

Sorry about the short session, though. I'm pretty tired, and it's starting to show in my update speed and I don't want the quality of my writing to drop too. It's actually morning for me, but writing this update while listening to the linked theme... well, I'm dozing off now.

The next thread should be after a few days. I'll post on https://twitter.com/boxofmithril with an exact date. Also I'll be archiving it under http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/qstarchive.html?tags=GFQ as usual.

Also, I'll explain the Spirit-Singing minor failure since it's not terribly clear. I said that you can give the Wild Infusion back, but uh, I may have lied. Baphy can't convince the spirit to work for someone else - the belt was what let others use it while it was unawakened, but it won't like having the belt put back on. Also it's a little weaker than it could have been.

I think the discussion going on is great, by the way! Though the hunt may get more complicated, it'll be fun to see and write how you want to approach it.

Aight, thanks boss.

thanks op, I've been spending too much time on here anyway.

So can we try to improve the stone power later?
Will we ever find out what Isava almost called us?
Shall we ever visit the Witch of Crows to learn totem magic?

Tune in next time on Baphybaah X

>You lift Lulette off your shoulders and hold her out with both hands. Lulette, nonplussed, lifts her clay pot and holds it out in her hands. The little Bushjack opens its mouth.
Cute.
