Thursday, only one more day before the match set. You weren't nervous about that, no sir. In fact, you were feeling quite refreshed. That sleep felt quite deep actually. For some reason it feels like way more time has passed. But you won't argue it for now. As you get dressed though, you realize that Winona has gone missing. You look over to Stack as she brushes her teeth on top of the tank, looking at herself in a portable mirror. “Stack.” She looks down at you, then spits out her toothpaste into a cup. “Have you seen Winona?”

“She left early,” says Stack. “Wanted to get a headstart on building her weirdo unlimited tank.”

Ingrid buttons up her blouse, smiling a bit. “Can't fault her spirit. But I gotta say, I don't see that Unlimited stuff going too far.” You frown a little. “Hey, just saying, she's no Ken Griffey or anything. She's just a High School student. Besides, if she wanted to do Unlimited, maybe she should've applied for Walter Christie.”

“Now, girls.” Josephina brushes her hair, frowning at the both of them. “Unlimited is very important to Winona. We have to support her any way we can.”

“How?” asks Stack.

“Well, she could always use more money,” you say. The three of them stare at you.

Oh right. They don't get money for working like you do.

With that however, Serina of the Motorcycle Club comes up to you. “Hey, Ellie. You got a minute?” You turn to her, nodding. “Listen, I was wondering if I could have your help with something. If you have time later today or... I dunno, whenever you have time?”

“I have to work, but later today you can come see. Or just tell me on the way and we'll work something out.” Serina nods, and you wave goodbye to your girls. “Girls.” The two of you start walking out of the hangar, with Serina sort of fidgeting a bit. “What's up?”

“It's about our King Tiger,” says Serina. “And the team.” Oh? You turn to her, quirking your brow. “I was... we were thinking of raising some emergency funds to help fix it before the match. We don't want to get left out because we couldn't afford to repair it.”

“Really?” You smile a little, folding your arms. “I could've sworn a week or two ago you hated the King Tiger.”

“Well- it's grown on us,” says Serina. “Plus, it's Miss McPherson's tank. She loves that thing.” You frown a little at that. “She tells us a lot of stories about it, did you know she used to practice tankery in that tank? Strange how she just stopped.” Yeah. Really strange. “Miss McPherson and the Motorcycle Club don't get along too much obviously but um...” She shrugs, pouting a little. “We want her tank to go all the way in the tournament, for her.”

“Well, sitting out one match isn't going to be the end of the world.” You flag down Denise as she arrives on the Kettenkrad.

“I know, but... nobody wants to be a benchwarmer,” she says. That much is true.

“What did you have in mind?” you ask.

“Selling some stuff.” Stuff? What kind of stuff? Not their bikes, right? “Figured you could help us considering your natural charisma and what not.” Natural what? You stare at her, confused. “What? You have that aura of like... 'do what I say', you know? You could be a really good salesman.”

You roll your eyes. “I'll keep that in mind. I'll talk to you later today.” You grab onto the Kettenkrad and mount up, then salute Serina. “Later.”

“Augh! What is that smell!?” yells Hilda. Your answer is in the form of Caldwell, who's wearing the absolute dirtiest uniform you can imagine. Her face as well looks covered in what appears to be mud as well. “Goodness, Caldwell. You smell like you look.”

“Gee, thanks,” says Caldwell loudly and angrily. Tessa dry heaves a bit, her sense of smell obviously a bit more sensitive than yours. To be frank, Caldwell doesn't smell that bad anyway. You've had far worse. “My bike's chain got split and I had to walk all the way here. And I ended up falling into a manure pile.”

“How?” you ask.

“Boys and their planes buzzed me,” she mutters. She folds her arms a bit. You roll your eyes. Hmph, boys. “Thought they were being cool. And I didn't have time to go back and shower so here I am and-” Admiral Nimitz the cat jumps up onto her desk and drops a dead rat onto her keyboard. “... nice.”

She's had a bad enough day as it is. No need to be petty.
>>
> “You need to get yourself cleaned up.”

You step on over to her desk and grab the dead rat and Admiral Nimitz. “Caldwell, you need to get yourself to a shower. I can cover for your work.”

Caldwell huffs, looking away. “Fixing to make me look bad, huh?”

“You look worse if you show up to work looking like this,” you say. “Just go.” Caldwell takes a few seconds to process this, then stands up and walks out of the office. You see some brown spots from her shoes. Eugh. Might need to clean those up. “Denise. Get me some wet paper towels please.” Denise nods, hurrying to the rest room.

After a few minutes of cleaning up after Caldwell's mess, you receive a phone call. You pick it up. “Lieutenant Commander Zumwalt, Logistics.”

“Zumwalt, it's the Agricultural Department.” Oh? “We have a problem. Some idiot let a couple of rabbits loose in our farms last week and now our crops are getting torn up.” Oh for... who lets a rabbit loose on an academyship? That's just not right! “We've already lost like a fifth of our carrot production to feral rabbits.”

“Alright, alright, let me see what I can do.”

“Thanks!”

The extermination van rolls up to the carrot plots. You, Denise, Mulcahy, and several of the farm girls watch as the girls inside prepare their tools. They have out barbed wire and electric fencing, traps for catching rabbits, and when all else fails, rifles. “These are Ruger 10/22s. Perfect caliber for small game like rabbits.” The exterminator girls load in their rifles with .22 LR rounds. And you do notice a couple of things. For one, they're not wearing boiler suits like exterminators would, they're wearing orange vests and camo shirts and skirts. Secondly, you noticed there's nothing but GUNS inside of their van either. Thirdly, the other girl in the back is loading a Springfield 1903. “Hey, put that away, we're not hunting bears!”

“Aw.” The Springfield girl mopes a little, moving to put the rifle back.

“So... do you guys exterminate pests often?” you ask.

“Oh, yeah, you got it,” she says, quickly rubbing some camo paint on her cheeks. “Everything from squirrels, rabbits, crows, deer, ferrets, possum, spiders, bears, alligators, large insects, feral dogs and cats, razorbacks-”

“And you exterminate them manually?” asks Denise.

“Yeah!” says another one of the exterminators. “You don't?”

“I mean, don't you use traps and preventive stuff for extermination?” you ask.

“Pffft. We aren't pussies! WE HUNT LIKE OUR ANCESTORS WOULD!” They raise their Rugers in the air. “Come on, girls! Rabbits ahoy!” They charge through the farm plot and deeper into the bowels of the very steel and very not nature-y type ship with all their camo gear.

“Well, they're enthusiastic,” says the farm girl. “Thanks for the help, Commander. It's not often the brass cares too much about Agriculture except when their food starts going bad.”

“I know what it's like to go hungry. Food's important. No need to let rabbits spoil your good hard work, you know?”

The farm girl smiles. “That's real nice of you, thank you, Commander. And hey, good luck in your match this weekend, alright? Tell Griselda we're rooting for her.” The other farm girls nod, smiling at you. Seems Griselda has some fans at least.

Right, time to say goodbye then.

The exterminators report that they've killed at least ten rabbits, and will continue to scour the farming plots for more. In the meantime though, you see that Caldwell has returned to her desk with a fresh uniform and a clean scent to her. She looks at you, then back at her computer as you arrive. “Hmph.”

“What, no thank you?” you ask.

“I don't need to thank you, my work is thank you enough.” Admiral Nimitz bats at her cheek, hanging at her lap. “Ah! For- okay, thank you!” says Caldwell. “Hmph.”

“You're welcome.” Honestly, you don't see how hard it is to thank someone for covering for you like that. “By the way Caldwell, I've had Hilda, Athena, and Tessa cover for you, so please try and thank them later too.” Caldwell nods at that. “Now, let's just finish up our work for now.”

Before that though, Caldwell says, “Really though.” You turn back to her. “Thank you.” She scratches at her hair idly, trying to avoid the topic it seems.

You nod back to her. “Again, you're welcome, Caldwell. Feel free to come to me if you got issues.” She nods, mumbling a bit to herself as she returns to her work. You yourself come down to your computer and start typing away at a report for the day to finish out.

It's a nice day out when all of you start heading back home. “Hey, we'll be around for practice later, alright?” says Athena. You grin at her. Wow! They're coming around. You nod to them, and allow Tessa and Athena to go on their own way.

Caldwell however catches you as you leave. “Hey. Why cover for me like that?” she asks. “I don't owe you, do I?”

“Do you want to owe me?” you ask simply.

She stares at you for a second, then shakes her head. “Ha, no. Of course not.”

“Then the only thing you owe me is hard work,” you say. “Otherwise, we're square.” Caldwell takes a few seconds to understand, then nods slowly. “Did you want to come with me to practice later?”

“Nah. But whatever. Later.” She turns around and walks off, staying wary of the skies. Good idea. As for you though...

You find Serina and the Motorcycle Club lining up a variety of motorcycles outside the Tank Hangar with... price tags? “What's all this?” you ask. Serina and the others look to you. “Something going on?”

“Ellie, there you are. Here's what we're selling to pay off the cost for the King Tiger.” You look at the motorcycles. Vintage stuff too. “We're not selling our road vehicles but these can go, we made the decision as a group. Plus, we're going to be throwing in manuals and repair kits for free as well.”

“Where'd you get these?” you ask.

“Our garage,” says Karina. Their-... these are their bikes!? “We figured we could make a couple thousand to help cover the cost of the turret, maybe even get some leftover to donate to the rest of the team.”

“Guys, these-” You look at the motorcycles worryingly. “These are really cool motorbikes. You can't just- you're just going to sell them for the team?”

Serina nods, mournfully. “It's going to be tough parting with each and everyone of them. Some of these bikes we built from the ground up out of husks we found, others we got handed down by family. But... it's the least we could for Griselda to help her out.”

“Hold on. The husk builds I can understand. But you shouldn't sell the family heirlooms,” you say. “The husk builds alone will get you a couple K.”

“But if they don't?” asks Serina.

“Well, that's just up to the people who are buying them.” You shrug. “Look, I'll help you sell the husks, but not the heirlooms. I'd feel really bad, and I think Griselda will feel really bad if you gave up those things just for her sake.” You're not lying when you say that. You're pretty sure Griselda would tear off her left ovary from the sheer guilt of it. The Motorcycle Club takes a group huddle for a few minutes, discussing it.

Then they split up, and nod to you. “Alright. Husk builds only.”

“Good,” you say. “Now, I'm willing to help. What do you need?”

“Just hold up this sign and look pretty!” says Kyoko. The sign is a big arrow with “LOW PRICE MOTORCYCLES” written on it. You're going to be one of -these- guys? Oh God. “Don't worry, it'll only be until practice starts.”

You sigh. “Okay. Fine.” You walk out to the street and hold up the sign.

“A little life, Elodie!” says Serina. “Come on!”

You sigh. You tap your foot to an imaginary beat, let's see... Ratatata... and go! You start swaying your hips left and right, keeping your foot work steady as well. You hold the sign high above your head, pointing directly at the motorcycles themselves. A few cars and trucks pass on by as you shake it to your imaginary music.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFrGuyw1V8s

A lot of heads turn when people walk by, looking more at you than at the motorcycles. Goddamn it, the motorcycles, the motorcycles, damn it! LOOK AT THEM! NOT YOU! Ah, this isn't working! But you keep on dancing, it's been a while since you've gotten to dance anyway.

Suddenly, a jeep full of interested looking boys from the Skycraft team pulls up next to you, Jeep Jockey and Jack are among them. You keep on dancing, pointing furiously at the motorcycles with your sign. But they keep on staring, smiling, nodding.

“ARE YOU GOING TO BUY THE BIKES OR NOT!?” you shout.

Jack holds up a hand, snickering. “Aw, come on. You dancing's pretty lit, Ellie! I'd pay to see more!”

“Yeah,” says Jeep Jockey. “Where'd you learn to dance like that?”

“Would you-” You stop, furiously death gripping the sign. “Buy the fucking bikes.”

“Okay, okay. I'll have a look.” Jack steps out, as do the other boys. They all come over to the Motorcycle Club, and from there they start discussing prices on the husk builds set out in front of the hangar. You sigh deeply, rubbing your nose. Ugh, so embarrassing. You turn your head to see Jeep Jockey standing next to you.

“Hey, seriously, love your dancing,” he says. “Better than me at least.”

“You're flattering me,” you say. “I feel like I've stuck in a tutu and told to dance in a circus.” He snickers at that, smiling a bit. At least he's getting a kick out of it. “So how are you doing, Jock? Well, I assume?”

“Yep,” he says. “Still driving around, still lazing around. All that stuff I guess.” You nod at that. “Just so you know, Jack's been planning another bomb raid today when you practice so if I were you, I'd probably stick close to the hangar. Unless you want another coat of paint on your tank right before the match.”

“Duly noted, thanks,” you say. At least he's nice enough to warn you about it. “Made any progress on getting a plane?”

“Nah,” he says. “And even if they let me fly, it'll probably be in one of the trainers.”

“You have training aircraft, what kind?” you ask.

“Eh... you'll see later,” he says quickly. “But um, yeah.”

“Yeah.” You smile a bit at him.

“Ellie, Serina!” Griselda calls to you all. “Time for practice!”

-

-

“Alright!” says Griselda. Opposing you now was Hadley Carver in the M36 Jackson, with her new crew assembled. Her crew, a full one including herself of five, consisted of troublemakers from the shift that got her into the mess you met her in. Part of you understands that maybe she's not charismatic enough to find anybody else. But, you won't fault her spirit, and for now they do seem to understand how to work with tanks, considering their experiences with diggers. “This is a training brawl,” says Griselda over the radio. “Hadley, you'll be facing against Ellie and her crew. The two of you will engage each other at extreme range. First one to knock the other out will be the winner.”

Winona smiles at you. “They're in a Jackson, they're sluggers, not brawlers. Should be simple.”

“Point of this though isn't to beat them, it's to teach them. And to that end, they have Miss McPherson riding alongside.” You look out to see Miss McPherson in the turret of the Jackson with Carver.

“Right, begin!” Your two tanks start from opposite ends of the field, closing in at full speed, a proper joust. Your tanks pass each other at high speed, little more than blurs in your vision. They stop to take the time to rotate around, while Josephina simply powerslides the tank into position.

Okay. “Again, let's go!” You charge at each once more. Right, right, let's see...

What the- You hold up your binoculars. Out in the forest is Arisu Shimada again. She's holding up a giant sign.

“Josephina. Take us to the right!”

“But we'll hit them!” says Josephina.

“I know, trust me!” The tank goes curving to the right. “Stay at this angle!” Your right track is about to meet theirs. You brace yourself. “Brace, brace!” Everyone braces themselves, ready to take the hit.

Your tracks collide, sparks shooting as they grind up against one another. Your guns wrestle and bounce off of one another. What the fuck was Arisu thinking!? You pull up your binoculars to look at her again.

Her cue card has now turned around to say, “GOOD JOB”

The fuck does she mean you did it wrong!? “Grind their track! More revs!” you yell. Your tracks to spin uselessly against each other, grinding more and more and shooting out more sparks. Come on, come on! Miss McPherson yells at them, ordering them to do something. Suddenly, they stop, and reverse back, making you fly forward at them. “WHOA! HANG ON!” Their shot flies past your turret, scratching the paint. “JESUS CHRIST!”

“Almost had them!” yells Carver.

You look to Arisu again. She continues holding up the cue card.

“SWEEP THE TRACK”

WHAT THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN!?

She drops a little placard below it.

“RAM THEIR TRACK WITH YOUR TANK'S WEIGHT”

… oh.

“Josephina! Full speed! Put the hull into their track!” The tank immediately barrels at them, the engine screaming. You brace yourself.

The front hull slams into their track, splitting it apart. They get turned to the side, stunned and with no ability to move. “Ha!” says Winona. “Got them!” Your turret lines up and puts a point blank shot into their side.

> KO: Hadley Carver (M36 Jackson)
> KILL CREDITED TO: Elodie R. Zumwalt

With that though, you decide to help out with repairing the track to the Jackson. All of you dismount and get moving on fixing it. “Man. Where did you learn to do that?” says Hadley.

Your own, personal, Arisu.
Someone to tell you how to tanks, to sweep the tracks.

You own, personal, Arisu.
I'm being serious, she's there! Right over there!
>>
> “Eh. Special little girl helping.”

You smile a bit, shrugging. “Eh, special little girl helping.” Carver looks at you strangely as you help set one of the tracks in place. “It's the truth, scout's honor.” She still looks at you weirdly, then shrugs in defeat. How exactly do you explain that Arisu Shimada, heir to the Shimada Household Tankery, and one of the premier youth Tankers is helping train you? Next thing you know, you'll be carting her around like she's Yoda or something.

Oh God, please don't let that happen.

> TACTICAL MANEUVER LEARNED
> The Track Sweeper: 5 CP
> The Track Sweeper is a non-indicative way of referring to one of the Shimada-ryuu's well-practiced rams. This ram utilizes the full force and weight of a tank's frontal armor to snap open a tank's treads, immobilizing it.

However, you hear the loud buzzing and droning of planes. “Incoming!” screams Serafina. Everyone starts running for the hangar, driving their tanks inside. Because you were still tangled up in the other tank, all of you decided to simply make a run for it. Paint splatters shot up and exploded against the ground in that cliché Hollywood strafing run pattern. But you made it inside with no fuss.

But those two tanks? Not so. At least you won't be scrubbing paint out of your eyes.

Dinner is served, with pho being on the menu thanks to Giap from the Historian's getting the approval from just about everyone. It is pretty good food, relaxes and fills the stomach so to speak. “And the best part is that you can eat it any time of the day!” says Giap. You all slurp noodles around your tanks, except for yours. Yours is still being converted if you recall. For now, you sit around Iris' Churchill.

“Ellie!” Carver walks up to you. “Just have to say, that was a really good training.”

“No problem,” you say. “How's your crew?”

“They're uh...” Carver looks over, and you see the four of them around the paint splattered M36 Jackson. Two of them are wrestling each other, wearing only tank tops and skirts, while the other two, one wearing a high-vis jacket with rolled up sleeves on her workshirt, and the other a yellow hard hat with goggles, cheer them on. “They're interesting.”

Josephina says, “Well, it's good that you have a crew, Carver.” Carver smiles happily.

“I just wanted to thank you though, Ellie, for getting me into Tankery.” You blink, huh? “I- it's... I didn't think I'd get a chance to do something like this. So, really, thank you.”

“Don't mention it, Carver. Just try and do your best out there and make us proud, okay?”

Carver nods, smiling. “Alright! Thank you!” She waves goodbye to all of you, and goes to rejoin her crew. Iris comes around next to you, sipping on some tea for dessert after a big bowl of pho. The two of you watch her as she breaks up the wrestling match, trying to make the very undisciplined girls fall in line.

Iris says, “She's a good girl, no question about it.”

“Yeah,” you say.

Josephina says, “Hope we get to see her do better in this weekend's match.” Yeah, this weekend's match. It's coming right around the corner, and so soon. Damn. Even if it seems easy, it might not be. Who knows what surprises could be pulled on you.

“Helloooooo~!” Winona arrives, wearing a grey jumpsuit covered in grease and oil. She hodls up her hand, a bowl of fresh pho in the other. “I just came back from my super intense Unlimited work! What did I miss?”

“Ellie claiming that a special little girl helps her with her tanking,” says Ingrid jokingly. You- but- ah!

“Aw, I knew she missed me.” Winona gently pecks you on the cheek, making the heat rise right up. FOR FUCKS SAKE, WINONA!

“Serina.” You walk up to the King Tiger as several of the Hall Monitor mechanics work on the turret. “Did you make enough money to cover repair costs?”

Serina nods. “Just enough. We had to pony up a bit of our own cash, but we made just enough to get the turret repairs we needed.” Awesome! “Thanks for the help, Ellie. Even if it was kind of degrading, sorry about that. I probably should've told you more about what you were doing to help us.”

“It's fine,” you say. “Just uh... try and give me more advance warning if you want me to do dance more.”

“Hey, you are very fine dancer!” says Kyoko.

“I- I'm not really-”

“Yeah!” says Ash. “Can you show me some of your moves?”

“I'm not- It's- It just comes to me, okay?” you say. You blush a little. “Geez, guys.”

“No, come on,” says Serina. “It can't hurt! Just a few moves! You don't even have to sweat it.”

You sigh. “Okay, just a little bit. C-...” You point to Serina. “Gimme a tune.”

Serina yells out to the Light Music Club. “Hey!” They look over from their Jagdtiger. “Gimme a tune, girls!” Jane Fogerty pulls out her phone, then starts playing a tune on it on a pair of mounted speakers.

A more techno song, sharp beat to it if you'd call it that. But you make it work. You dance to the beat, shaking your hips to the electronic tunes. It's sort of like doing the robot, except there's more of a flow to it. The Motorcycle Club look on in awe, nodding slowly. “Follow this sort of. Most of dancing is all in the hips,” you say. “That's how I learned it anyway.”

“Whoa!” Serafina walks on over with the Poles. “Look at her go!” They hold up their phones, filming you. Uh, you didn't say they could film.

“Wow, look at that!” The other crews come on over, watching you dance. Even when Griselda comes out to see the hubbub, she grins genuinely when she sees it. Everyone is taking pictures, filming it on their phones. You start blushing intensely, continuing your dancing. You're too far into this now to stop. You just have to do it until the song stops of course. “Go, Ellie, go!” says Winona. Everyone claps to the beat, further encouraging your body, not you to keep dancing.

You just have to keep going until the song stops. “Yeah! I gotta post this on twitter!”

“Oh, Kit is gonna love this!” says Serafina. Iris looks to the side bemusedly, sipping from her tea.

PLEASE STOP SONG AAAAHHHHH

Good thread GS. Good to see things are working out repairs-wise. Though I do wonder where we are finacially.

Thw fact that Nonna is elite means we should work on that loyalty quest more. Though I lament the fact that we have only 12 points of CP. Going to make us not as effective next battle. Going to have to hope people like Serafina, Serina, Carver et all show some muscle. Griselda is on the mend and despite appearances, Iris can't do it all.

Should be fun either way with what we do.

Just hope we din't get Caldwell'd tomorrow.
