Welcome to Mischief Managed: A Marauders Era Quest. This quest takes place in the Harry Potter universe in the year 1971 and follows our PC’s years through Hogwarts, Tom Riddle’s rise to power, and the First Wizarding War. Book canon will be followed for most things. Every other year will be skipped, for times sake, but only while you’re in Hogwarts. Rolls are best of 3 using a d100.

Last thread we left Cyril in herbology with his friend Rowan
>>
You look at Rowan, who stands in front of you, ready to go take care of your plants. You then look behind him, focusing on the sacks of dragon shit. “Lets just hit the books.” you say as your nose crinkles at the smell of the manaure. Rowan laughs as he sits down and takes off his gloves. “You act as if you’ve never had to do a little bit of yard work.” You look up from your notes, giving him an odd look. “Why would I ever have to do yard work? That's what the servants are for.” you say as if it's common knowledge. Rowan looks at you slightly confused, but only for a split second. His face quickly changes into one of slight annoyance, rolling his eyes at you. “Of course you haven't you rich git, it was a joke.” he replies to you, picking up his herbology book and flipping it open. “Bad joke.” you say with a smirk, dodging a paper ball thrown at you by Rowan.

You spend the rest of herbology dutifully studying, only stopping every now and then to mess with Rowan much to his annoyance. You’re both able to review a good chunk of your notes, though you still cant really find the ambition to try to remember some of the harder things. Oh well, you’ve still got time to study. The bell signals the end of class and you and rowan pack up your things up and head out, waving a goodbye to Professor Sprout as she wishes you all a good weekend. As soon as you step out, you’re hit by temperature change and shiver a bit. You rub your hands together to try and create a little warmth as you survey the snow covered grounds. Its beautiful. And even better, class is done until exams! Your thoughts are interrupted by Rowan, who's a bit ahead of you. “You coming back to the common room?” he shouts at you.

You shake yourself from your thoughts, running towards to Rowan. You pass Pandora, whos on her hands and knees, talking into a hole. You grin and say goodbye, but she seems too occupied with the hole to pay you any attention. You reach Rowan and you both make your way to the castle. Once inside your hurriedly make your way to the common room. It seems most of the other first years had the same idea to seek warmth in the pit, as you watch many of your housemates chat to one another warm and happily. You notice that there only seems to be a couple students in the higher years in the common room. The rest must be in class or studying somewhere. You notice Rowans already gone off and and found Severus. They sit in one of the many plush chairs near a large fireplace, chatting to one another and several other students in your year. Towards the back of the other common room, near the fireplace by the windows you see Andromeda and Lucius, along with some other Sixth Years you’ve never talked to.

Its been awhile since you talked to Andromeda, even longer since you've talked to Lucius, so you make your way to over to them. Just on how they sit, you can tell other boys in his year bend their knee to Lucius. Sitting in the corner of the room, Lucius is flanked by two large men, both of which look dumber than rocks. Several other Sixths sit around him, listening to him talk to Andromeda who sits across from Lucius. Andromeda’s usual collected and composed face is peppered with annoyance as she listens. “Now Andromeda, I’m more than sure Goyle would love to take you out.” Lucius says, a smirk creeping across his face as he motions to the brute to his right. Goyle gives a yellow grin and a grunt. You notice Andromeda’s fists clench a little bit as she says “Oh how kind of you to offer, Malfoy.”, the sarcasm dripping from her words. You let out a snicker and suddenly find yourself the object of attention of all the Sixth Years. You let out a nervous chuckle, slowly taking a step back. “Cyril! It's been awhile since we’ve talked.” Lucius address you, a genuine smile on his face. “Come, sit!” he says, taking out his wand pushing Goyle and his chair to the right and making another plush chair appear by his. You stare at the chair wide eyed and take a seat. Man, magic is fucking great. As you get comfy, you look at Andromeda, who seems to have relaxed a little bit with your arrival. She gives you a small smile.

You introduce yourself to the other older Slytherins and they all give you annoyed looks, but thankfully seem to tolerate you since Lucius is able to. Once introductions are over, Lucius looks back at Andromeda, his smirk returned. “Now my dear Andromeda, you must understand my...worry.” Lucius says, trailing of rather dramatically. Andromeda’s cold fury is back upon her face and you can't help but be a little confused. What the hell did you walk into?

Tired of being in the dark about everything that's happening, you blurt out “Why are you worried Lucius?” Lucius turns to you, letting out a laugh. He pats you on the back, saying “Such a great question Cyril.” Andromeda’s fists tighten even more, her knuckles turning white, but her face looking perfectly cool. It seems she's determined to stay calm. Or at least try to. You look back at Lucius as he begins to talk. “Cyril,” he asks in a very serious tone “what is the most important thing to a Pureblood?” You think for a moment before you answer, finally deciding. “Family” you say tentatively, unsure if that was the answer Lucius was looking for. His smile confirms that's the correct answer as he continues. “Yes, family is what all Pureblood families should hold most dear. And do you know exactly why that is?” he asks you. This time you can't think of anything and just shake your head. “Because Cyril,” he explains to quietly “blood is everything.” As he finishes his sentence he looks at Andromeda. Andromeda seems to be able to keep her calm, but you can see her throwing killing curses at him with her eyes. “Now Dromeda,” Lucius says, still staring her down, “it would be in OUR families best interest if left this little mudblood is forgotten about.” You can feel the seething rage pouring off Andromeda as she tries to contain her anger. You find yourself surprised by several things. It seems the rumors you’ve heard recently are true; Lucius is marrying Narcissa. The other revelation surprises you the most. Andromeda Black, daughter of one of Britain's most well known and ancient magical families is seeing a muggle-born. You yourself are somewhat neutral on muggle-borns, though your father raised to differently. He view was very much in line with Lucius. You study the delicate situation you’ve stepped into.

"Is that not why our families acquire power? So that we can have these dalliances without it being questioned, what truly matters in the end is what goes in the history books and this is one of those events that have happened before and will happen again, quietly swept under the rug over and over again."

This a tuff situation. We can do the obviously bad (but no-one will blame us) option of supporting L, we can defend Andromeda without nowing anything about the situation which will make us seem desperate, we can ask why it matters which will make us seem (willfully?) ignorant which will make us seem beta.

I suppose we could tell Andromeda that it is a brave choice and that she likely has a hard road ahead of her. If she can pull that off she deserves anyones respect.

I'd also like to put some input here, so that we're not just using the "the heart wants what the heart wants" line of thinking.

Why limit yourself to one specific type of bloodline, when power is most important? Not ever Pureblood family is going to produce viable heirs with amazing magical talent. The simple fact that there are witches and wizards that come from muggle born families proves that it's not the blood but the individual that matters. It's both terrifying and exciting, the wild factor of not knowing what's going to happen.

Also does Cyril know where babies come from yet?
>>
>>1038959
if people support that, Cyril will say that. 'Defend Her' is more like just telling Lucius off, not taking a stance on blood
>>
>>1038959
Because prejudice is rife in their society and saying that everyone is theoretically equal labels you as an outsider. You have to remember that people are not reasonable.

Eh, we're like 11 years old, we don't got time for that shit. 'Sides Lucius is out of here in like another years so who cares if we step on some toes.

There is a moment that you choose to say nothing. Andromeda’s your friend, but Lucius has power. If you play your cards right, maybe he’d take you under his wing before he graduated. Having a close connection to the up and coming Malfoy heir would only benefit you. But as you look to Andromeda, your stomach feels weird. You can see the anger on her face; she’s not trying to hide it now. But there's also...hurt? Pain over what Lucius said or the fact he said it at all, you don't know exactly. But there is one thing you do know, and that's what you’re about to do. “Stop” you say, your voice sure. Instantly, everyone is staring at you once more, but this time, you don't feel the nervousness from before. Lucius looks at you lazily, as if he counts you lucky that he's listening to what you said at all. “Excuse me, Selwyn?” he asks you, as if he hadn't heard you the first time. “Stop messing with her; you're upsetting her.” you tell him, and Andromeda looks at you softly, the anger washed from her face. She seems almost taken aback as if she didn't expect anyone, much less you, to speak up. Lucius studies you for second, as if you’ve given him something to think about. Suddenly his thoughts are broken, as he stands up, signalling to his two brutes. For a second you fear you’re about to get beaten, then Lucius speak up. “I think you’re quite right Cyril, she is upset. And so am I.” he curtly says, fixing his robes. Turning to Andromeda, he simply says, “Heed my words, Andromeda.” walking away with his lackeys in tow.
After Lucius’ random departure, all of the Sixth Years begin to leave, shooting glances at both you and Andromeda. Now that the shows over, it doesn't make sense for them to delay getting ready for their next class. Soon only you and Andromeda sit. Swiftly, Andromeda takes the seat Lucius had by you. Before you can react, she embraces you in a hug and plants a kiss on your cheek. As she pulls away you can feel the fire that's engulfed your face, but you can't help but give a dumb grin. Andromeda laughs, and then looks at you worriedly. “You stupid little snake.” She says, shaking her head with a sad smile. You look at her confused, but she doesn't say anything. Getting up, she tells you to write to her over Christmas break, and thanks you. She doesn't say for what, but you understand. Soon, Andromeda too is gone. As you sit in the chair Lucius made, you relax yourself. Who knew you were going to deal with that. And why hadn't Lucius been mad at you? Confused and slightly relieved, you look around the common room. Looks like most First Years have left, probably to the library to study. You can't see Rowan or Sev anywhere, so they may have gone to study too. And it seems all the higher years have left for class.

You put your school things away in your dorm and then head out to the freezing dungeons. As you make your way out of the cold dungeons, you try to think where Rowan and Severus could be. The library seems the obvious choice, but they could technically be anywhere. Finally out of the dungeons you begin to make your way to library. You walk there is relatively quiet; you don't run into anyone. Not from your year or above. Its makes you feel as if you’re the only person in the castle, its sole owner. Your power fantasy is ended when in front of you, a bit farther down you notice Andromeda. She’s lean against a wall, her back faced to you. You surprised to see her again, since she should be in class. As she turns, you see her tear streaked face. Quickly, you make your way to her. As you approach she notices you, and begins wiping the tears from her face. “A-are you okay?” you manage to get out. Andromeda narrows her bloodshot eyes in slight annoyance and you realize you asked a pretty stupid question. Her face softens and she looks down. You stand in front of her awkwardly, unsure of what to do.

Without really thinking about it, you wrap your arms around her and give her a hug. You feel her body go completely rigid and for a moment you think you’ve made a terrible mistake. But suddenly you feel her body go soft and her arms wrap around you. You stand there awkwardly for a moment before you realize Andromeda Black the cool, level headed Slytherin is letting out quiet sobs. You’ve never had to deal with something like this, so you do the most sensible thing; nothing. A slightly uncomfortable minute goes by and you feel Andromeda let go and you do likewise. Her eyes are a little bit bloodshot and her face is streaked with tears. She quickly wipes them away and looking away from you. “He dumped me.” she sputters out, her voice breaking a little. She's laughs at that and closes her eyes lets out a deep breath. When she opens them, she seems a different; calmer and more relaxed. She must be talking about the muggleborn Lucius made the commotion over. You’re somewhat surprised that she was actually dating him. “Men are stupid, Cyril.” she informs you with an annoyed look.

There's a brief silence as you think for a moment. “Did Lucius have anything to do with this?” you question. She seems to bristle at the mention of Lucius. “He must have said something to Teddy. The absolute piece of shit.” she says, hissing out the last word angrily. You rack your brain, trying to think if you have ever heard about a ‘Teddy’ attending Hogwarts. You can’t think of any in any of the upper years named Teddy. It's a muggleborn name for sure. Andromeda is furious but also seems almost worried. You’re glad you’re still young because relationships confuse the hell out off you. “Lucius must have said something serious to make him even consider to do this.” She says rather ominously. Lucius sure does have the means and power to threaten someone, so it doesn't surprise you he’s found some way to intimidate this muggle-born.”You know, I could always be your boyfriend.” you say jokingly, wagging your eyebrows. Andromeda lets out a very unladylike snort of laughter. “How kind of you.” She replies sarcastically. She pauses for moment and then, “Thank you, Cyril. It's odd to see such outward kindness from a Slytherin.” she says to you, the comment obviously genuine. “Thanks?” you reply, not sure if you should take it as a compliment or an insult. Andromeda laughs again. “I was serious when I said to write me. I better get an owl over Holidays.” she warns. She says her goodbyes and quickly disappears into the castle.

Now that you’ve dealt with that, you make haste to the library. To your surprise, you can't find Severus and Rowan. They must be somewhere else in the castle.

There's still a little time till dinner. Severus and Rowan could have gone back to the common room. You make your way back, wishing you knew some shortcuts to get there faster. You finally arrive to the damp wall in the dungeons. You begin to mutter the password when you remember something Rowan had mentioned that Professor Slughorn had wanted to talk to him. Since you really have no idea where they’d be if not in the library, you decide it wouldn't hurt to check. Slughorn's office. Thankfully, that isn't that far from to the common room and in no time you’re there. Without any hesitation, you knock on the door and pause. You listen carefully, trying to pick up footsteps of voices. You hear something, but it could easily be some other sound echoing down the dungeons halls. You heard right through; the door suddenly swings open. Professor Slughorn stands before, a rather happy look on his fat face. “Cyril! What a pleasant surprise! Do come join us” he says merrily. He moves his pudgy form from your view enough for you to see Rowan and Severus sitting on comfy looking leather sofa by the fire. They at wave you, both looking smug as usual. You try your hardest to roll your eyes at them as you thank Professor Slughorn and walk inside the office. Slughorn quickly makes a chair for you and takes his seat across from Severus and Rowan.

“You’ve joined us joined us at the perfect time Cyril. We were just discussing the little party I throw right before the holidays. You remember, I sent you an invitation!” Slughorn says with a flourish. You look at Slughorn dumbly for a moment, not sure what he means since you never received one an invitation. You quickly change your expression and say nod your head in confirmation. “Splendid! I’m rather interested to see who your date is.” your mouth gapes open a bit. “Ah ah, don't tell me. We shall see.” says Slughorn, holding a hand up. It seems he thankfully misunderstood your expression. Slughorn quickly launches back into his previous conversation. You spend the rest of the time till in dinner with Rowan, Severus, and Professor Slughorn talking about everything from classes to family. You’re the one who talks the most about family; Severus and Rowan not having much to say.Noticing the time, Slughorn shoos you all off, saying he’ll see you all at dinner. You don't even make it 10 feet down the hall before Rowan is pushing at your arm, giving you a stupid grin. “So Cyril, gonna ask someone or is all of that Gryffindor bravery wearing off?” he asks sarcastically. Both Severus and him snicker. They must of figured out that you never got your invitation in the first place.

As you walk, you ponder Rowan’s question. While he was joking, you know that both him and Severus are probably a tiny but curious. Who are you gonna ask? For a second you play with the idea of telling them you’ll be asking Andromeda Black, but you decide that even with your expert skills in keeping a straight face they’d never believe you. No, it’d probably be best to stay in your year, with someone you already know and are comfortable with. Rowan and Severus are talking about potions when you finally come up with an answer for them. “Pandora. I’m going to ask Pandora.” you say with a voice of finality. They both instantly stop mid conversation, both eyeing you with an odd look. Severus is the first to speak out. “Are you feeling a bit feverish Cyril? It sounds like you just said you’re asking Pandora Spero to the party that only Hogwarts best and brightest.” he says with a sneer. You give him an annoyed glare and retort back quickly. “Ah, then I take it you’ll be asking Evans?” you finish with a rather smug look. While Severus doesn't change his expression, you do notice his cheeks turn a bit pinker. He doesn’t even try to say anything back, admitting defeat. Rowan merely laughs at the both of you. You take the lull in conversation to ask both of them if they know what happened to your invitation. They both surprisingly shake their heads and tell you that they didn't know you hadn’t got one until you came into the office. You have to assume either that it just got lost in transit or someone else took it. Three of you start to slow down;you’ve finally arrived to the Great Hall. Students from all years are slowing streaming in to feast on dinner. It seems that you’ve arrived just in time; the food hasn't appeared yet. Looks like there's room at all the tables.
