You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

The briefing room was crowded. MUCH more crowded this time. Not only were the benches and chairs packed to the brim with shipgirls from various nations, but you also note quite a number of regular naval officers and special forces troopers standing in the aisles and towards the back of the room, with a very few select lucky ones finding space to sit among the shipgirls, though you figure they had "connections" to get that sort of perk...

ANYWAYS, as always, the Admiral and Captain were up at the front of the room, facing everybody. Ever since you had passed information about Pacifica's existence to them, you hadn't heard a peep about her, and subsequent attempts to contact her via datalink by both you and Anna were unsuccessful, most likely because she had been disconnected from the network one way or another. It honestly kind of made you concerned.

However, you had the briefing to focus on. During the mad shuffle to find seating, you found yourself ending up sitting among...

Of course, you were sitting among your fellow destroyers, but you were being squished between your sisters on one side and the other Fletchers on the other. In all honesty, it was starting to get a bit cramped on this bench.

"H-hey, quit tugging on my braid!" Wren whines.

"It's not me!" Daly protests the accusation. "It was Kidd!"

"It be that scallywag Luce!" Kidd retorts.

"This is not funny!" Luce groans.

"Perhaps you should do something." Heerman warns.

"But they're really cute like this!" Johnston counters, earning an exasperated sigh from Heerman.

"Hey, squirts, pipe down!" You grunt as you reach your arm over and pull at all four of their braids, eliciting a combined pain mewl from each of them. "Ya got plenty of time to bicker after this!"

"Meanie!" Luce, Wren, and Daly all collectively stick their tongues out at you, while Kidd grumbles something under her breath, probably not suited for her sisters' ears. Well, at least you got them to focus on something that wasn't bickering with each other.

"Attention." The Captain's voice booms through the loudspeakers loud and clear. "We will be beginning the briefing now. Everybody finish what you are doing."

That instantly quiets everybody down, and the lights dim as the projector lights up, starting off with a satellite view of the city of Singapore and the surrounding waters.

"First of all, I would like to thank everybody for putting aside their regional and personal differences for this mission." The Admiral says diplomatically as he stands up. "This operation will not only be carried out by just American and Japanese forces, but Singaporean, Malaysian, Indonesian, and Australian forces as well."

The Admiral then subtly nods to a number of the regular naval officers all standing in the back, which you now realize are dressed in various differing uniforms.

"Now, to the actual briefing." The Admiral coughs lightly. "As you all know, we have been making preparations to remove the Abyssals from the city of Singapore. Unlike Midway, though, we will be assaulting the city from multiple fronts."

The projection then changes, with large reb blobs and dots marking Abyssal positions. Blue arrows from both land and sea then begin to converge in on the city indicating the advance of allied units.

"The Singaporean and Malaysian armies, with support from the USMC and JMSDF, will push into the city from the north. Meanwhile, naval elements from the USN, JMSDF, Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia will assault the city from the south. Our aim here is to use this pincer attack to overwhelm the Abyssal defenses, press into the city center, and eliminate the Abyssal Princess that is no doubt controlling the base."

The image then shifts to a closer view of the city. You could see that much of the city was flooded, with the streets having been turned into miniature canals. Ugly black carapace and steel shells cover a number of buildings, while smaller tendrils wrapped over others like vines. In the center, though, was one central spire built completely out of black carapace, glowing an unnatural azure blue.

"That spire is our ultimate objective." The Admiral continues. "Once the outer defenses are breached, shipgirl and conventional forces will assault this spire and hopefully force the Princess out into the open, where we can engage it on our terms."

"Will we be deploying Mulberry like we did at Midway?" Enterprise asks.

"Considering the toll it took on her body, we would like to avoid deploying her if at all possible." The Admiral says grimly. "But, if the situation calls for it, we will deploy her as a last resort."

"And what kind of support can we expect?" Nagato asks.

"We have no less then three carrier groups provided by the USN, not to mention numerous surface action groups from allied navies to provide support." The Admiral explains. "The Indonesian and Malaysian navies will block the strait to prevent Abssyal reinforcements or retreat, allowing us to concentrate all of our shipgirls on the city itself."

"Are there any other questions?" The Captain looks around.

None so far.

"Here are your mission assignments." The Admiral says as the projector screen shifts to a list of names separated into different groups. "Keep in mind, we have reorganized a number of squadrons due to the nature of this mission."

You squint as you zoom your optics onto the image, trying to search out your name. And you manage to catch it under...

BRIDGEHEAD OPERATION: Support the ground forces by protecting bridge laying units in the narrow strait separating Malaysia and Singapore. Due to the restricted nature of the geography, close combat with Abyssal units is inevitable.

CLEAR SKY OPERATION: Stay in the rear lines with the carriers to help coordinate anti-air actions with allied planes and AA assets.

HARBOR ASSAULT OPERATION: Join the primary assault force to engage the bulk of the Abyssal fleet. Expect a major engagenement.

PARADROP OPERATION: Join special forces units and airdrop into the city itself and designate critical targets for precision strikes. Expect to be cut off from support for an extended period of time.

You manage to catch your name under the group assigned for the paradrop operation, going directly in the belly of the beast itself, it seems. You also see that it's the smallest group out of everyone. In addition to you, the team also consisted of Johnston, Heerman, Haida, Portland, San Fran, and Sendai. You'd also be working in concert with STRIKE-ONE, naturally.

"Sweet! Ain't that great?" Johnston chortles when she sees the assignments.

"Always the most dangerous ones for us, huh?" Heerman sighs.

"Ohmygod I'm so jeeeeaaaaaloooous!" Wren's face pouts so much you're almost afraid it would pop like a balloon.

"Get good like us, squirt, and maybe you can tag along." You chuckle jokingly as you ruffle Wren's hair.

"That's it for the briefing." The Admiral concludes. "Everybody, please report to your rally points. Your individual squadron leaders will provide you with more details. Good luck to you all."

With that, the loud buzz of chatter and gossip starts up again as everybody stands up and begins to exit the room. However, you hesitate for a moment.

You push your way through the crowd, heading for the front of the briefing room where the Captain and Admiral were still discussing mission matters between each other. Sam, acting as a pseudo bodyguard, eyes your approach but does nothing to stop you.

"Um, Cap, Admiral?" You speak up as politely as you can.

"What is it, Hoel?" The Admiral asks, his trademark concern in his eyes.

"Well, um, I'm sure that the Cap told ya about..." You look around as if someone might have been listening in on you. "About Pacifica."

"Ah, yes." The Admiral nods. "I can confirm that she will be participating in this operation, but as her own independent unit."

"What, she's all alone?" You blink

"She'll be accompanied by a special task force, directly overseen by Vahlen." The Admiral explains further. "Apparently, she wants to keep her interaction with other shipgirls limited for 'security purposes."

Of course, the Admiral and Captain did not look at all convinced by that explanation.

"I suspect that they're trying to get a handle on Pacifica's behavior." The Captain adds in. "She is, of course, completely unprecedented, even in this age of shipgirls."

"I see..." You sigh. "And uh, about the mission... what happens if we find survivors?"

The Admiral and Captain both look at each other, and then back at you.

"Hoel, Singapore fell to the Abyssals years ago." The Admiral shakes his head. "While the Singaporean Navy managed to hold the Abyssals off long enough for most of the population to evacuate inland into Malaysia, it was at a great cost, and many were still left behind. Given what we know about Abyssal behavior and their propensity to recycle any resources they can find, it's highly unlikely you'll find any living humans in Singapore at this point."

"Ah, I see..." You frown.

"You should get going." The Captain curtly reminds you. "If you dawdle any longer, you might get left behind."

"Yeah, thanks!" You wave to the two officers and to Sam as you rush off, not wanting to get left behind. If you remembered the listing correctly, you were all supposed to gather at the airstrip. You quickly head over where you see your shipgirl team and STRIKE-ONE already assembled.

"Of course you're the last to arrive." Portland shakes her head.

"Someone's gotta be fashionably late, right?" You grin as you playfully elbow her.

"It's still unprofessional." Haida rolls her eyes.

"Since when did I ever claim to be?"

"...point." Haida concedes.

You then glance over to the two lead members of STRIKE-ONE, Section and Red. Oddly enough, the two of them seemed to be arguing something. You edge closer to listen in.

"Doing it by plane is safer." Section says adamantly. "It'll allow us to fly above the effective range of the Abyssal AA guns."

"Yeah, and risks scattering us all over the damn city." Red retorts. "I say we should go in by helo. If we go low and fast enough, we should be able to get past their AA guns no problem, and we can touch down wherever you want!"

"Assuming we even get past those guns." Section grumbles. "And we can find a pilot crazy or dumb enough to try it."

"...I know a guy." Red shrugs.

No, we should get the 5"/54 Mark 45; it's not only a rate-of-fire upgrade over our existing guns, it fires a heavier shell, it's MUCH longer-ranged (the newest extended-range shells are longer-ranged than battleship main guns), it has guided shells available for it, and, best of all, it's literally a drop-in replacement for our existing guns, so no loss in firepower.

"Well, going in by helicopter sounds like the best call." You put in your two cents.

"See? Even the shipgirls agree with me!" Red says smugly.

"That's not necessarily the best thing." Section sighs. "But I suppose there's merit to the idea. We'll take an Osprey and go in. I just hope this pilot of yours is as good as you say he is."

"Don't worrrry, it'll be fine!" Red assures him.

Sure enough, Section and Red are able to commandeer an Osprey, since they were special forces and it wasn't exactly easy to say no to them.

"You been briefed?" Section asks as he squints at the callsign painted on the pilot's helmet. "...Ugly?"

"Yep. Red told me everything!" Ugly gives the thumbs up. "But boy oh boy, do you owe me big time for this."

"Haha, I'll make it up ya, assuming you can get us in alive!" Red chuckles as she kisses the pilot on the cheek.

Oh. Oh. That's how they know each other.

"More ideas for your coooomic~." You whisper as you nudge Portland.

"Shut up." Portland growls.

"Are we there yet?" Johnston whines as she straps herself into one of the seats.

"Yeah, yeah, we're going, we're going." Ugly nods as he starts powering up the engines. Red drops into the copilot seat next to him. "We're supposed to be the first ones in, so we're going in full speed, no stopping for anything!"

And with that, the Osprey lifts off and vectors towards Singapore. Section and the rest of STRIKE-ONE sit at the head of the craft, while the shipgirls sit at the back, closer to the ramp. You also finally notice Sendai present, her eyes closed as if in some sort of state of meditation.

You make your way up to the front of the Osprey where Section and Red are sitting, carefully weaving your way past their team members.

"Yo, Section, Red, so what have you all been up to so far?" You ask. "Haven't really seen ya guys in a while since... uh... Argentina, I think?"

"Ah, well, big meanie Section here is just gonna say it's all 'classified' and 'need to know.'" Red chortles.

"Because it is." Section grumbles.

"But, well, the most I can tell you is that we've been around in places, like China and Russia." Red continues.

"But I thought the Abyssals haven't managed to land in China and Russia." You frown.

"Who says we were watching Abyssals?" Red winks. "Like Section says, classified stuff."

"We're approaching Singapore!" Ugly announces.

You take a quick look through your radar, and could see that you were indeed coming up to the city. High above, you could detect numerous planes. F-18s, F-35s, F-15s, and even the large bombers like B-2s and B-52s, all participating in the pre-invasion barrage that everybody liked to call "shock and awe". Bombs and missiles fell upon the city like rain, knocking out Abyssal defensive positions and troop concentrations. Almost immediately, the entire city exploded like a hive of angry bees, countless combat forms and planes roiling out from hidden tunnels and orifices. The sky was immediately filled with tracers and flak as the surviving AA emplacements attempted to retaliate.

Down below, you could see dozens of conventional ships and shipgirls massing in preparation for the actual invasion. Tomahawk cruise missiles spat forth from the conventional ships, adding their firepower to the bombardment.

"Well, if they didn't know we were coming, they sure do now!" Red cackles.

"So what's our LZ?" Ugly asks.

If you recalled correctly, there were three possible LZs for you, depending on site conditions. There was the Western side of the city where both the airport and air base were located. Knocking out or seizing those areas would neuter Abyssal air power and provide an additional avenue for reinforcements. However, the air defenses around that area were sure to be the thickest.

The eastern side of the city was where the USMC would be making their push. However, the Abyssals are certainly expecting an attack from that avenue and have significantly reinforced the area against ground attack, particularly centered around a strongpoint where the Nanyang Technological University used to be. Eliminating the strongpoint would clear the way for the Marines, but ground resistance would for sure be tough.

Finally, there was the city center itself, where that Abyssal Spire was. If you could manage to get in there and put pressure on that spire, that might force the Abyssals to fall back, or make the Princess expose herself. However, the city center was heavily protected from both the air and the ground, making it the most dangerous LZ.

>NO FATE POINTS REMAIN

Fortunately, the Abyssals seem to be too busy worrying about the air attacks to notice the approach of your Osprey. Well, most of them, anyways. The Osprey is shaken by the occasional nearby flak blast, but Ugly is able to touch the bird down on a nearby flooded parking lot.

"This is as good as it's gonna get! Go go go!" Ugly yells.

Nobody needs to be told twice, and the whole team piles out of the Osprey as quickly as possible. Red give Ugly another little goodbye peck on the cheek before bailing out as the Osprey begins to climb to make its escape. Almost immediately, the STRIKE-ONE members form a perimeter, crouched down behind any cover they could find, weapons ready and aimed. Most of the other ships join them, though you notice Sendai had completely disappeared, most likely doing her ninja thing. You see Section waving you over to join him and Red, who were looking at a crumpled map.

"If I'm reading this right, we're just south of the airport." Section points to your projected location. "It's close to the coast so we can be supported easily. If we move in and knock out the defenses, we can start landing troops in no time."

"But that doesn't solve the problem of their fighter swarms." Red frowns. "I think we should push to the airbase and take out their launchers."

"That's deeper inland, which means we'd have to fight through more Abyssals to get there." Portland observes. "I know Hoel, Heerman, and Johnston are good at AA duty, but I'm not sure if they can hold off THAT many."

Portland looks inland with concern, as a black and crimson hurricane cloud of maddened Abyssal fighters swarm the sky, seeking any target to vent their primal rage on.

"We should push to the airport." You put your two cents in. "Even if we can nab the airport, we'd never hold it with the Abyssal fighters just hanging out next door."

"Hoel does have a point." Portland nods. "I'd rather not leave those fighters at our backs."

"Understood." Section nods, deferring to the shipgirls.

However, your little moment of interrupted when a Tomahawk cruise missile comes screaming in overhead, no doubt seeking its target. Almost immediately, a flurry of Abyssal fighters swarm it like gnats on a cow, peppering the missile with machine gun fire and tearing it to pieces. Artillery shells also start coming down onto the city, courtesy of the two Zumwalt destroyers allocated to this mission.

"We better get moving." Section says as he packs up the map. "I'd rather we approach slow and quiet, but main force should be engaging right now and slower we act, the more damage they'll suffer."

"Well then, what are we waiting for?" You grin as you stretch out your legs. "There's enough water around here that we should be able to keep pace with you guys, no problem!"

"Roger." Section nods. "All right, everyone double time! We're headed for the airbase objective!"

With that, the unit reorganizes. San Fran and Portland stick close to STRIKE-ONE to provide them heavy support. Sendai separates from the pack to act independently, scouting for enemies while you, your sisters, and Haida take point. For now, things are quiet. The Abyssals haven't seemed to realize you were here just yet, but since you were all hustling to the airbase at full speed, that was sure to change soon...

It's not long until you come up against your first patrol. You see what looks to a giant combination of crab and human skull. A giant crustacean with a human jaw and human teeth on its underside, and instead of claws, was sporting to massive human arms and a tank like gun turret on top.

Flanking it were a pair of what looked to living, bipedal gun cannons that waddled around like really clumsy, ugly babies.

Suddenly, out of nowhere, a storm of torpedoes rain down the Abyssals, showering them with explosions. The smaller Abyssals immediately detonate, while the larger crab tries to crane its view upward to find the source of the attack.

Above, standing atop a light post with her arms crossed, Sendai laughs.

"I've distracted! Now hit its weak point!" She bellows.

Sure enough, in trying to look upwards, the crab Abyssal had suddenly showed its vulnerable underbelly. You, Johnston, and Haida quickly unload your cannons into it, punching through the thin carapace and causing a torrent of oilblood to spill out. The crab Abyssal roars and sputters before collapsing to the ground.

"Nice shot!" Johnston waves to Sendai, who's still standing on the light pole.

"That was just the first wave!" Sendai points to the sky, a cloud of Abyssal fighters vectoring towards you now. "I'll leave the planes to you, Yankees!"

And with that, Sendai leaps off and disappears into the concrete jungle.

"Looks like we'll have to fight our way through." Section grunts. "You think you can do it?"

"Of course!" You boast.

"San Fran, with me!" Portland jets forward. "We'll break the forward defenses! Destroyers, focus on air defense!"

"All right girls, let's show them what we've got!" You grin as you plant your feet securely in the water. You watch as Portland and San Fran charge the Abyssal barricade blocking access to the airfield, their 8-inch guns blasting away at the wall of black carapace and tearing huge chunks out of it as Abyssal cannons attempt to respond, but they're too low caliber to efficiently pierce either heavy cruiser's armor. STRIKE-ONE meanwhile breaches a derelict building, no doubt to get a better vantage point on the airfield.

Meanwhile, Johnston and Haida are already blasting away at the fighter swarms with their AA guns knocking out several planes but not nearly enough.

Heerman, though, doesn't seem to be firing. You look and realize that she doesn't have her regular cannons anymore. Instead, she aims a full sized railgun, the entire barrel mounted on and running down the length of of her forearm. There's an electric crackle as the weapon charges up and a bright flash and whine as a shell launches at hypersonic speed. Your radar for a brief second tracks the shell as it plows into the nearest fighter swarm, exploding into countless hypersonic fragments in a devastating airburst, practically detonating the fighter cloud.

However, there were more and more fighters bearing down on you all. You raise your own guns and arm your VLS tubes, ready for the worst...

You put up your own withering barrage, throwing as much lead into the air as you could. Abyssal fighters swarm and rage, but they're hard pressed trying to get anywhere near you or your allies.

"Hi Hiiiiiiiii!" You hear a familiar voice chime in your ears. "So you really are here too, Big Sis!"

"P-Paz!?" You almost hesitate, before remembering that you can't afford to.

"Yep yep! I heard you were gonna be here too, but I didn't realize you'd actually be ON the island! It took me a while to find you!" Pacfica explains, still cheerful as ever despite presumably being in the middle of a battle. "Pssst, hey, Mom's being a big meanie and won't let me do anything, but she's not looking right now. You want me to send you some help?"

"What?" You blink.

"You know! My Lightnings! I'm sure they can help you out!" Pacifica offers, her voice now a hushed, conspiratorial whisper.

Some carrier support WOULD be helpful, but you might get Paz in trouble...

"Thanks, Paz, but I think we can manage." You assure her. "Plus I'm sure they're saving you for something more important than us!"

"Awwww, okay, then." Pacifica sighs, obviously a bit deflated. "Good luck out there, then! I've been looking over the datalink and it looks like the others are doing good so far!"

"That's good to hear." You grin.. You were currently too distracted to afford being able to really delve in to the datalink right now, so the update was helpful.

"New wave!" Haida barks out a warning as she reloads her guns, now glowing orange from the heat of repeated firing.

As expected, the Abyssal airstrips, huge, tumorous looking growths protruding from the airbase's runway, begin vomited forth more fighters to engage you. It might be time to use your missiles, you think. You had four of your cells loaded with quad packed ESSMs, for a total of 16 missiles, while your remaining four cells were loaded with single SM-6s. Perhaps your ESSMs could give you the opening you needed?

Without hesitation, you launch all of your ESSMs, the small AA missiles belching from your VLS tubes and spiraling through the air. Your vision shifts to radar, where your AEGIS system helps you track and lock almost every individual Abyssal fighter within your range. Time seems to slow as you designate which fighter each missiles should focus on, thing lines of data connecting them together.

Time goes back to normal, and your ESSMs rocket off, chasing down Abyssal fighters like attack hands and savaging the second wave of fighters before they can really even get up off the ground. Between the devastating missile wave and the constant cannon fire from your fellow destroyers, you buy yourselves a few moments of breathing room to reload your weapons and cool down your barrels.

Meanwhile, Portland and San Fran are continuing to push into the airfield, wreaking all sorts of havoc as they blast Abyssal fuel tanks and ammo bunkers. However, the airfields prove to be much better armored, shrugging off even their heavy 8 inch shells at long range. STRIKE-ONE meanwhile has set up in their vantage point and were providing supporting fire with heavy .50 caliber sniper rifles and missile launchers.

With a moment's respite, you pause to radar sweep your surroundings...
