I know I am late, but I have an excellent excuse! I overslept! I'm joking!

Actually a friend came to visit me and have lunch so had to act as host. Sorry

Nah, sadly it will take a looong time for that.

Anyway, let's see... we were meeting with Tupac, but ran into grandpa, Stella, and her friends. We have Aritsu, Lyann and Mako with us, as well as our siblings, who are coming to the city for the first time.

***

"Waaah" - Stella cooes happily as we pat pat her head while greeting her friend. Her tail wags to the sides, and she keeps her pretty face pressed tightly against our shirt.

"Thank you for taking care of my little sister." -we say
"It is not a problem." -says one of them, causing the others to stare with their jaws hanging down

Ah, we know. Stella is quite a handful...

"Stella, go and say hi to the others as well."
"Yes!"

She happily wanders off to hug, kiss or lick everyone in turn.

"It is a pleasure." - Lyann introduces herself, and the rest of those present are quickly introduced or introduce themselves.

Grandfather happily pats the heads of our siblings, picking them up and inspecting them with a critical eye, before announcing how excellent they are... ah, he's just spoiling them and making himself look serious and important, isn't he? He's just showing off...

Well, the kids like him, so I guess it's fine. He's the big dumb hero type, so it's probably alright to let them with him...

The reason this post has taken so long is because i forgot the full name of Tupac's daugther, can you help me up?

"Lord Baldric, what are you doing in the middle of the street? Take the children into the house" - a feminine voice makes itself heard with a polite yet firm tone
"Ah! Nana Euphry. Right!" - grandpa nods nods to the attractive, petite and winged head maid as he ushers us into the house.

The head maid looks at our siblings for a few moments, before relaxing her posture (which is to say, she just lowers her hands from her hips to cross them before her, and lowers her shoulders a little bit. She's still ramrod straight) and smiling at them.

"It is an honor to meet you, little masters. Please come in." -she says with a warm smile as she pulls out candies from her apron and hands them over

"Nana Euphry, can I have on-" -grandpa starts asking as he sees that
"Get in the house already!"
"Yes nana"

Strongest woman in the protectorate, right there.

While fending off grandpa's hand, she gives our little siblings each a piece of candy as she helps lead them in.

"Is this a social visit, young master?" -she asks us

In addition to the questions regarding the plant conspiracy, we should bring out Tanis and ask if he knew the dragons before their current Monster state, or if he remembered tales from his youth of any draconic empires.

"Thank you, nana Euphry!" x7 - Our little siblings thank the head maid for the candies, and follow her towards the back gardens.
"I will inform father that the young master is here for him. Please wait in the library." -Euphrpsyne bows courteously and leaves after the children.
"But I want to stay with big brother..." - Stella protests softly as she gets dragged away to the gardens

Her classmates follow her with a somewhat troubled smile, once they excuse themselves from our presence.

Sadly, neither uncle Wolfric nor Alard are home, and it looks as if they won't be coming home tonight.

Grandpa had things to do, since his daily routine had always included a dungeon trip at this time, and it was only recently that he had taken to going with Stella. Even if he's alone, he's still going, in order to raise his levels so he can better cushion the blow on the citizens if the keep's final weapon is required.

After a short wait, the family's head butler knocks on the door and waits for our permission to come in.

As usual, he is waiting for us to speak first, so we begin by explaining about plant monsters, and wanting to know when and how was it that they fell so out of favor.

"While it may be true that the plant-type monsters are good at fighting [ERROR]s, if they will only show up once every ten millenia, I do not think there's any need for such a campaign of misinformation to take place." -he says calmly- "Won't the average hunter naturally choose a different companion? One that is easier to raise, and will grow stronger, quicker."

He stands quietly as he waits for us to comment.

Well, I guess he has a point... plants are good for us because we can take them to a higher level than normal people can, so they catch up on strenght and begin surpassing most monster types, but a "normal" adventurer would want something with a quicker power curve.

"Our family should have kept records and made sure that such knowledge is made easily available to the head of the Lightbringer Keep, as well as a tradition of having Plant Pets to assist in fending off [ERROR] attacks.
"That attacks only happen once every 10,000 years is no excuse for such sloppy preparation and a lack of maintenance of the Keep's defenses. This level of incompetence is not acceptable for the family that has the responsibility of defending the multiverse.
"The repeated failures of generations of Lightbringers is a stain on the record of this family."

Tapac should have known better. To have allowed defenses and standards to fall to such levels is unbecoming of a Head Butler of a Great House.

Order Tapac to hire workers who will create etched mithril tablet record copies of the books.

Also order him to write up a list of all known XP multiplier effects and items that we will go over later.

Again, the fact that our family, and he in particular, knows that the [ERROR]'s always attack and did not properly work to preserve the accumulated knowledge of millennia of Lightbringers so that a distant future Lightbringer could find a permanent solution to the [ERROR] attacks is incompetence and laziness that is simply unacceptable.

We should lightly rebuke both Tapac and Grandfather for their failures.

>Tupac has only been there for the last 8k years so theres a 2k window about which he doesnt knows
That's got nothing to do with how the defenses were not bolstered, the books were not transferred to better archival methods like stone/metal tablets, Plant monsters kept as a weapon against the [ERROR]s or even civilized so that they could be an army to help fight off the next invasion.

NOTHING about simply being 2,000 years too late to fight or experience the last invasion excuses his lack of preparation for this one.

What has he done that would actually end the [ERROR] threat or prepare the Keep for the next one? Has he worked on building or reverse-engineering the lightning ballista? On understanding the principles on how the Keep's shield works? What makes Baldric even think that expanding the shield to hit the Black Moon would even seal it shut?
He's got nothing, and Eldric needs to start getting angry at being treated like a kid by adults who are this incompetent. They've done NOTHING to deserve his respect.

None of what I said depends on out-of-character information.

We asked about weapons used against the [ERROR]'s, and Baldric showed only three working Lightning Ballista, with no effort or notes on either building new ones or even just cheap knockoffs.
The cheap knockoffs, I'll remind you, our friends were able to slap together in a few months while Tapac had 8,000 years.
The Keep's shield we were already told about, but neither Baldric or Tapac have any evidence or experiments to show that the shield can close the dimensional portal, only that it disrupts the [ERROR]s it comes in contact with.

Except this is wrong. Baldric intentionally dismantled the defenses and let everything fall by the wayside instead of using time-tested methods, or did you forget all about that?
And Tapac helped him with his radical and untested idea of using the shield in a way that it was never meant to be used, risking the shield generator burning out and leaving the Keep without active defenses.

And he also didn't use methods that always worked; he didn't repair the defenses from the last attack, didn't keep them up and repaired.

>we are like the first one ever part frum the frist ones to reasch and try to build things to fight agest the error
No, that's wrong. The development of the shield, the creation of the chasm, the building of the Lightning Ballista; these were not all done by the first generation of Lightbringers, they were done by many previous generations.
The cataloging of the [ERROR] types was also done by successive Lightbringers, not just the first generation.
This last series of generations for the past 8,000 years have done nothing to repair the defenses that were damaged during the last invasion, and this generation actively broke them down.
How is that "how it has always been done and it works" when they actually don't do anything that the previous successful generations did?

>Except this is wrong. Baldric intentionally dismantled the defenses and let everything fall by the wayside instead of using time-tested methods, or did you forget all about that?

That was just the inner teleporters of the keep, though. The weapons were just turned off and 'locked' so that noone would mess with them unknowingly. Kinda bad to leave a lightning ballista where any idle office worker can fire it.

And sadly, the shield purpose has always been to eat the levels of the user, and then the population around the keep, to burn away all nearby [ERROR]s

But, well, there's other reasons.

>>1067886
>No, that's wrong. The development of the shield, the creation of the chasm, the building of the Lightning Ballista; these were not all done by the first generation of Lightbringers, they were done by many previous generations.
Thats correct, but it still doesnt means that every single generation will add to them. ...ah well, the thing is, the keep still has a couple secrets left that grandpa doesnt really care to share with us.

Even as a Fighter Baldric has had decades to learn engineering, alchemy, and magical theory. With the bonuses to his INT, such subjects would be easy for him to learn. In fact, his INT is actually higher than Eldric's right now just from pure Job bonuses.
And since he actively avoids doing any ruling of Eopolis, there's no excuse for him to not have tried to learn the skills needed to examine and carefully analyze the Lightning Ballista.

Tapac has had 8,000 years, is a demi-god, and he doesn't know how the Ballista work.

The problem is not that the knowledge was lost in the first place, it's that no attempt has been made to restore it, when it only took someone with just a few years of training and education to be able to come up with a working, slightly weaker version that can be mass manufactured.

>>1067935
>That was just the inner teleporters of the keep, though
Yeah, and those are still part of the defenses. The Keep only has the chasm, the shield, the lightning ballista, and the walls.
And if they were such a security hole, why were they built in the first place?

>The weapons were just turned off and 'locked'
But more weren't made, and only three were left. No effort was made to make more.

>And sadly, the shield purpose has always been to eat the levels of the user, and then the population around the keep, to burn away all nearby [ERROR]s
Again, that means that it wasn't meant to close the dimensional portal and there's no reason to think that it can do such a thing.

>but it still doesnt means that every single generation will add to them
That's different from a generation actively not preparing the defenses, or the demi-god helping the family to not contribute to repairing or strengthening the defenses for the entirety of his 8,000 year tenure.

>>1067944
>haha both wore wrong
That's the wrong interpretation. That you can't realize that just shows how wrong you are.
>>
>>1067935
>take the kids home now

>the keep still has a couple secrets left that grandpa doesnt really care to share with us.
Even after we told him that we are better at preparing for the invasion than he is?
Why doesn't he realize that he's just in the way, and stop being an annoyance.

Since its the kids first time here, let them have the full experience. Since we are going to the keep anyway to check the archives, we can let them spend the night there.

"Poo... I have to go back to school..." - Stella pouts with her ears downcast. Well, she cant stay outside overnight, so it cant be helped.
"Be a good girl. This weekend, you can come to the ship with me and have fun." -we pat pat her head, cheering her up
"Yes!" -she says with a smile

She gives everyone in our group a smooch, then goes back to her school while looking quite happy about the weekend trip.

Well, we finally get to take the kids to the keep. They can take some of the rooms on the topmost floors, while we check the lower floor archives for more information.

1/?

>>1067963
>why were they built in the first place?
You mean the ballista, the shields and the teleporters? First was the chasm, then when the residents saw that they had suddenly gained like 300 floors of basement because of the huge ass chasm, the teleporters were added to link the lowest levels of the keep, to which we have never gone yet, to the upper ones.

I was saving it as a surprise but I guess i'll let you know to help you relax a little, that there's actually a entire brotherhood (the church of light's real face) in those floors, dedicated to defending the keep. They just asked grandpa to not tell us about them so they can measure us better.

Well, dont get a wrong idea, its not 200 floors of scientists. Its more like 180 floors of crypts full of Honored Dead that are waiting to rise up and charge against the [ERROR]s if needed, their crypt caretakers, and a few lorekeepers.

Overall, they're pretty amused by our frantic efforts, since from their point of view, the keep will have no issue fighting back. The thing is, they are really too focused on the keep itself. They dont know that the [ERROR]s have been recruiting all over the world.

They thing it will be like other times before, with the [ERROR]s just dumping a massive army on top of them, while in fact it will be SEVERAL massive armies this time.

We've never gone to Bastion or the southeastern lands, after all, so the [ERROR]s rcruiting has gone unobstructed in about 1/4 of the world.

But yeah, grandpa does think that with just his energy added to the shields, it will be enough to stop the attack. Normally he would be right, but not about THIS invasion.

I just really wanted to surprise you guys when you finally went to check the oldest records and thus went under the keep into the crypts, but if it will make you feel better, I guess ill tell you now.

Disabling the teleporters keep unwitting visitors from ending in the crypts by accident.

It is true, though, that we could use more ballistas, but they were always seen as something of a luxury rather than a needful thing, in the past.
>>
>>1068017

The kids happily run around on the highest floor as they go from one end of the floor to the other so they can look at the city under twilight. The sun is slowly beginning to set, as the maids guide them to the dining room so they can have dinner.

"Ah, you'll need this." -says grandpa as he gives us a large key

It is literally made of a solid chick of metal. It is as heavy as a mace, and just as thick.

Does this even count as a key? Wouldnt it do damage if we hit someone with it?

"I'll turn on one of the teleporters for you so you can go to the archives." -he says with a small smile
"Uh... thanks. I can just walk downstairs, though?"
"Not that far down." -he says again
"...alright?"

He takes us to the garden on the roof of the keep, and moves aside a statue to reveal a hidden teleporter. Replacing a gem on a currently empty socket, he powers it up.

"I thought you didnt know how to do that"
"Why wouldnt I? I know how to power them out without breaking them, don't I?"
"...right."
"You probably should go alone." -he says while looking at the girls.

It is. It's the kind of thing that you think will be cool, but is actually really stupid when you actually try to do it.

And your explanation still hasn't explained why Baldric thinks that the shield will be able to close the dimensional portal for good, instead of just stopping [ERROR]'s at the portal for as long as he keeps the shield powered at such a high level, before ultimately burning out the circuits.
>>

>It is true, though, that we could use more ballistas, but they were always seen as something of a luxury rather than a needful thing, in the past.
You have 8,000 years in which to prepare more ballista's, and because they are considered luxuries, there wasn't any effort to build more?
Even during 8,000 years when it's not like anything else really needs to be done, such as the chasm expanded, the shield improved with redundancies or made more efficient, or anything else?
They really just did nothing to bolster the defenses for the past 10,000 years waiting for this invasion to happen?

Grandpa sighs and ruffles our hair. Due to size difference, it really does look like a grandfather patting his small grandchild's head, even if we are almost an adult now.

"They will learn things you may have preferred them not to know." -he says
"I dont have secrets for them."
"Alright. Let's go."
"You are coming too?"
"No, but I need to stay and hide the teleporter again, then need to open it when you are ready to leave."
"Oh."

We step into the teleporter, and instantly appear at the end of a long hallway.

In front of us,nothing but a thin and quite long hallway, with a very obvious, huge lock on the wall to our right.

Across the hallway, we can see a stone statue with two metal pipe systems next to it... it looks sort of familiar, the pipe systems...

We insert the large key into the keyhole, and the stone statue sinks into the floor smoothly, showing a stairway behind it.

"Let's go."

Well, if we've been working as a bottleneck in favor of reality, I guess it would be as old as reality, so a couple million years is actually nothing.

Should we be surprised that one fortress has lasted that long, or that our ancestors still haven't plugged that portal for good?

"Let's try with..."

Miel II and Atruma, and have them assisted with Aritsu begin with the oldest surviving records while Eldric, Mako, and Lyann start with the ones from the last incursion. And make Mai and Ami assist us as well.

"The oldest records... those would be from quite a way back. Three hundred and seventy million years, give or take a few hundred thousands... sadly, there's a gap of unknown lenght in the records, so we are not really sure about the dates of anything that far back."
"Were the records damaged by an attack?"
"Indeed, it seems the [ERROR]s tried tunneling in, and came straight unto the records, damaging them greatly. Since, we added shields as a sphere around the whole keep rather than as a wall."
"Alright. Aritsu, take Miel II and Atroma and see what there is, please."
"Yes!" - the beautiful elf princess nods nods and starts pulling out some of her office supplies.

"The rest of us will get started on biology. We should take anything useful back to our teams as soon as possible."

"I am sorry to say, just classifying and keeping everything in order already takes all of our efforts, young sir. But, I am confident they will please you."
"I hope so."

As we go into the floor, we see hundreds of thousands of shelves in a series of hallways.

"This is?"
"The index for biological data."
"The whole floor?"
"Of course not. This is the first of six floors."
"And they're all index!?"
"Yes."

Uh... let's go with the biological data from the latest invasion, then.

The index are ordered with a system of cards with holes... this is uncomfortably familiar...

Anyway, we manage to find instructions for quite a few shelves. Let's take a look...

Let's end here for this thread, unless you guys wanna do something cutesy or lewd. I need time to organize my ideas for the coming plot related events.

Lewd times with the last Shadows, and with Ami.
Ask Ren that, if Mako is to start a new dynasty in Alquia, should we get one of the Shadows pregnant to create a second set of Shadows for Mako's children, so that the Mantequiran Shadows can be devoted solely to Ren's bloodline.

Cutesy, having a sandwich and tea party with the succubuses and the honey fairies in New Hope to introduce the two groups to each other as neighbors.

We could also have more harpy and Fleur times.
