Well, I know I promised a fantasy themed quest after Infinite Stars, but I was in a bit of a Titanfall mood so I decided we'd run a short little quest delving into that!

But first things first, what faction do you want to side with? The Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation, which is trying to enforce its resource rights on the rebellious Frontier, or the Militia, a ragtag army of settlers fighting to protect their homes from the IMC's iron grip?

Here's the short version of Titanfall lore:
>The games take place in the Frontier, a large swath of the universe of variable size that has been explored, documented, and a fair amount colonized by humans from the Core Worlds (of which Earth is the most important)
>Most initial colonization was funded by the IMC, the biggest megacorporation in the setting
>They left the Frontier alone for several decades to go deal with some shit
>When they came back, they discovered the Frontier was fully self-sufficient and didn't need the IMC anymore
>The IMC attempt to enforce eminent domain and retake control of the colonies of the Frontier
>Most colonists, understandably, told the IMC to "fuck off" and helped form the Militia to defend the Frontier's independence

One other relevant detail:
>Most combatants are either grunts (riflemen) or some variant of mechanized infantry (Spectres, Stalkers, Reapers)
>A fully certified Pilot is an ace among aces, with lots of tools, weaponry and immense skill afforded to them, and that's BEFORE they get into their own Titan

>>1074971
The only battle you really have to concern yourself with out of Titanfall 1 is the Battle of Demeter, where the Militia blows up the main junction that effectively connects the Core Worlds and the Frontier. This fucked over the IMC considerably, and they have yet to fully recover from the loss.

"Hey! Rookie! Hey!"

"W-what?" You groan as your eyes flutter open, when you feel a slap on your face.

Not hard enough to cause any actual pain, but definitely enough to catch your attention. Your eyes snap open in response.

"Hey what the fu-" And then the words die in your mouth when your realize the guy harassing you had a lieutenant's patch on his shoulder. "I-I'm sorry, sir!"

"You can just call me Ramirez." The officer chuckles as you quickly scramble out of your cot. He brushes at his officer's patch somewhat nostalgically. "I just got his thing so I'm not used to hearing people calling me 'sir.'"

"Of course, s- Ramirez!" You nod as you quickly get dressed.

"And piece of advice, Rookie, don't get caught asleep on the job." Ramirez cautions. "If the IMC doesn't get you, then the Cap will, especially if you think you got what it takes to be in the Marauder Corps."

"I'm not a rookie!" You protest. "My name's Holly, and I have experience!"

"Oh?" Ramirez pauses and raises an eyebrow, intrigued at being challenged by you. "Care to enlighten me, Rookie?"

If we do rolls can it be best of 5? I always hate best of 3 because it just makes it a slap dash to get to go first, ironically making a shit ton more people roll than necessary. 5 seems like it gives a bit more leeway without making it too easy.

"I've completed over 300 battles!" You huff.

"Real or simulated?" Ramirez asks faaaaar too quickly.

"Um... simulated." You squeak.

"Though so." Ramirez chuckles. "Every rookie says that. VR training is one thing, but the real deal is completely different. Now get suited up and follow me."

You nod as you pull on a jacket and follow Ramirez through the metallic halls of the MCS Vengeance. This was honestly the first time that you've been on a full size battleship, and it was pretty crazy how it was so damn large, you couldn't even feel the subtle, minute movements that smaller ships had.

Unsurprisingly, the halls were fairly empty at the moment. Since you were in the middle of transit, there really wasn't much for the crew to do until the ship reached its destination. So, they were mostly off doing their own thing in the habitation decks or sleeping the wait off in hibernation.

Finally, Ramirez leads you to a door, hopefully to the person you had come all this way to see. One of your personal heroes, the Blue Death herself.

"Hey Cap, I brought the Rookie!" Ramirez knocks on the door with a metallic rap.

"Bring her in." A hard edged, female voice responds.

"Good luck." Ramirez smiles as he steps aside.

The door slides open and you step in, your entire body tingling with anxiousness. Captain Richards, the Blue Death herself! A Titan ace with over thirty confirmed Titan kills! However, when you step in, you're met with a fairly plain looking women sitting behind a desk. Her long blue hair which gave her her namesake flowed freely down her back, but her red eyed glare seemed to pierce through your heart.

Your entire body locks up and you find yourself unable to say anything, leaving the Captain to speak up first.

"So you're the replacement Sarah sent." The Captain's eyes shift downward to what you can only assume is your personnel file. "No combat experience, but she speaks rather highly of you."

"I-I guess I had something she liked?" You manage to sputter out. Just standing in the same room as her seemed like she was ready to leap out and break your neck at any time.

"I'm going over your training records, and it seems you have a certain affinity for..."

"...Titan Piloting." The Captain raises an eyebrow. "Sarah certainly knows who to pick."

"Oh, I just freaking love Titans!" You squee. "Their size, their bulks, the way they move... just everything about them! It's why I wanted to be a pilot!"

The Captain pauses for a second, staring at you for several loooooong seconds.

"I can see why Sarah picked you." She sighs and shakes her head. "All right, I don't suppose you have a Titan yet?"

"Ummm, no." You admit sheepishly. "I was told I'd be provided one on-site."

"I figured." The Captain stands up from her desk and motions for you to follow her as she walks out of the office. "Let me ask, then. What's your Titan preference? Light, Medium, or Heavy?"

Light Titans usually had maximum mobility, to the point where some could achieve flight. However, this comes at the cost of protection, leaving them vulnerable to enemy fire.

Medium Titans were an attempt to balance light and heavy Titans, turning them into a sort of jack of all trades that could respond to any sitution.

Heavy Titans were designed to carry the heaviest armor and the heaviest weapons, giving them massive firepower and protection, but at the cost of any sort of mobility.

"Well, I kinda like the heavy Titans more." You grin. "Like the Scorch and Legion class Titans! Just heavy, mobile firepower!"

"I see." You can almost swear you see the Captain smile when you say this as she leads you through a set of heavy blast doors.

And that's when you find yourself in the middle of a massive hangar complex. Lining the walls are easily a dozen Titan chassis, dark and shut down.

"This is where we keep our spare Titan chassis." The Captain notes as she walks down the row, flanked on both sides by the silent steel sentinels.

"Um, but all of these look the same?" You frown, looking around.

"They're all Vanguard-class Titans." The Captain continues. "The problem with stealing Titans from the IMC was that they liked making lots of specialized, purpose built models, which played hell with our logistics. Now that we can start manufacturing our own Vanguard-class Titans, we retrofit them with parts to match their pilots' tastes."

The Captain then stops in front of two Vanguards, both looking noticeably bulkier than the others.

"We just so happen to have a spare Legion and Scorch loadout ready to go."

SCORCH: Built to deal with light infantry and pilots, the Scorch-class Titan is armed with a massive incendiary grenade launcher. In addition, various flame projectors installed all around the body allow the Scorch to launch superheated flame in all directions. However, even though its flames are meant to cook infantry, they're still hot enough to melt the thickest of armor on opposing Titans.

LEGION: The epitome of heavy fire support, the Legion-class of Titan is armed with a massive vulcan cannon that can spit out an unimaginable storm of lead that will shred any target into ribbons, Titan or Pilot. The Legion also comes equipped with an energy shield to absorb attacks from the front. Finally, the Legion's vulcan cannon can be loaded with special smart rounds that actively hunt down their targets, no matter where they are.

"I'm going with the Legion!" You point to the corresponding Titan confidently. "You can never have enough firepower!"

"Good choice." The Captain nods. "Now we just have to get you a core."

Oh, that was right. Titans nowadays were being equipped with AI cores improve their individual combat effectiveness, as well as improve the combat effectiveness of its Pilot. However, the drawback was that Pilots had to be "compatible" with their Titans, and sometimes that just wasn't the case.

"Follow me." The Captain says again as she leads you to another set of blast doors. On the other side, you see what looks to be some sort of combination of lab and workshop, obviously to develop and maintain gear for the Titans. You look on with awe as you see mechanical parts, Titan limbs, and weapons of all kinds scattered about in various stages of disassembly, absorbing every sight and smell.

The Captain continues to lead you over to a rather mousy looking woman in a lab coat, tinkering with what looked to be a Titan head severed cleanly from its body, the IMC logos still displayed prominently on it.

"Naru." The Captain says simply.

"Ah!" The scientist leaps up in fright, before realizing who was speaking to her and she tries to regain her composure. "J-jeez, Tarin, can you not sneak up on me like that?!?"

"We were stomping in here with all the grace and subtlety of a Scorch." Tarin retorts calmly. "Anyways, I need you to get a core out of storage."

"Can do!" Naru nods and finally notices you. "Oh, are you the new Pilot?"

"Private Holly Foulke!" You nod.

"Ah, well, I'm Dr. Naru Takumi, but you can just call me Naru!" The scientist smiles. "As you can see, I'm in charge of making sure all of our Titans are in tip top shape!"

"Naru." Tarin speaks up again. "The core."

"O-oh, right! Sorry!" Naru snaps back to attention. She seemed a bit... scatterbrained honestly. "Which one do you need?"

"Sarah already put a recommendation in the file..." Tarin flips through some papers. "She suggested BLL-0079."

"R-really?" Naru instantly pales.

"What's wrong?" You ask curiously.

"Either you REALLY impressed Sarah, or you pissed her off really badly somehow." Tarin sighs.

"BLL-0079 is one of more... troublesome Titan AIs." Naru says sheepishly. "Unfortunately, he seems to be rather... picky. Other than his first pilot, BLL has rejected all other pilots that attempted to use him. Nobody's ever gotten above 5% combat effectiveness."

"Well, why do you keep him around?" You frown.

"Because he was one the first AI cores the Militia developed, and as such, carries a treasure trove of combat experience we don't want to throw away." Tarin explains, her arms crossed now. "Though I suppose we can give it a try."

"But-" Naru stammers. "What if it happens again?!"

"Me and Ramirez will be on standby. We'll be ready this time." Tarin responds.

You almost want to ask them what they're talking about, but you're a bit too afraid to.

"I-I'll go retrieve the core, then." Naru mumble as she shuffles off.

"All right, Rookie. Time to show us what Sarah sees in you." Tarin tosses you a Pilot helmet, which you manage to catch. "Get into your Titan and interface with your Titan AI."

She somehow makes it sound so simple.

"Yes ma'am." You manage to croak. Sure, you were anxious, but you wanted to be a pilot so badly!

The two of you then head back into the hangar, where you see Naru and a couple of technicians carefully slotting in a Titan AI core into your Legion Titan. Another team was carefully inserting the battery packs needed to power it, as well.

And on the other end of the hangar, you could see a Vanguard painted in green forest camo with a Tone-class loadout powered up and on standby. Sure, it wasn't visibly armed, but its mere presence was a bit unnerving.

Nevertheless, you work up the courage to climb into the cockpit and slip on your helmet. You give a thumbs up to Naru to show that you're ready.

"All right, activating Pilot link!" Naru announces.

And then you see a flash of light and then...

And you find yourself standing in the middle of a grassy field. The sky was a crisp clear blue, and the sun was shining bright and unhindered. A slight breeze blowing past and causing the grass to rustle and wave.

It was nice. Almost like you were back on Harmony.

And that's when you noticed it. It was your Titan in a kneeling position, but something was off. It looked like the Titan had been kneeling there for years, centuries even. The entire machine was caked in a thick layer of dirt, grass, and moss. Like a giant rock than a man made war machine.

You approach the Titan carefully, but it doesn't seem to react to your presence. Was it shut down?

You head over to the back of the Titan, where the battery packs were normally installed. You do a quick check of all three, pulling them out to check. Your helmet HUD immediately tags them as powered and operational.

That was weird-

"STATE YOUR PURPOSE." You hear a loud, deep voice, rumbling through the air and shaking your body to the core.

"U-um I'm Holly. Holly Foulke." You say instinctively.

"I DID NOT ASK YOUR NAME. I ASKED YOUR PURPOSE." The Titan retorts. Its primary optic swivels to face you, dislodging some dirt and moss in the process.

"W-well, I'm supposed to be your Pilot." You explain.

The Titan's optic continues to stare at you, as if looking into your very soul. You heard rumors and stories that Titans could see their Pilots' memories and experiences through the Pilot link, but it was never confirmed one way or another.

Here, you were getting a distinct feeling that BLL was doing just that.

"WHY ARE YOU A PILOT?" BLL asks, its optic still trained on you.

Well, at least he didn't seem or feel as hostile as you feared.

"You really want to know?" You ask, suddenly glad that your helmet was hiding your blush.

"THAT IS WHY I'M ASKING." BLL grunts.

"Well, okay..." You take a deep breath. "It's because I like Titans. No, I LOVE Titans! Everything about them! The motors, the hydraulics, the engines, the weapons, the power sources, everything! My heart leaps with joy when I see a Titan activating for the first time, its optics lighting up like stars in the sky!"

BLL doesn't say anything, bu you continue anyways.

"I absolutely adore the way they move, with such power and grace that no human can ever match. How hands powerful enough to punch through armor plate are still delicate enough to pick up a flower from the ground! All I want... is to be able to pilot one of those! To be part of the magic that makes them work!"

H-holy crap, did you really just go on a fucking monologue on how much you loved Titans?

There's another few seconds of silence, and you're afraid that BLL wasn't even listening to you.

But then you hear a loud, garbled jumble of electronic junk noise, which you could almost swear was a laugh.

"OH MY GOD YOU'RE SUCH A DORK."

"I am NOT a dork!" You protest.

"YOUR SPIKING VITAL SIGNS SEEM TO INDICATE THE OPPOSITE." BLL chortles. "YOU DON'T SEEM LIKE THE OTHERS, SO I THINK I'LL GIVE YOU A CHANCE. YOU REMIND ME OF A DORK I USED TO KNOW."

"Um, thanks?" You blink.

"I MEANT THAT AS A COMPLIMENT." BLL then finally begins to move, dirt and moss cascading off his hull as he stands up. "CONFIRMING LINK TO PILOT."

And then you notice the field around you beginning to melt away into white lines of data and code, until only you and BLL remain.

"PROTOCOL ONE: LINK TO PILOT." BLL booms as he stands up to his full height. "PROTOCOL TWO: UPHOLD THE MISSION."

BLL then kneels down again, and the cockpit opens up with an electronic hiss, as if beckoning you inside. Getting the hint, you quickly clamber in as the cockpit closes back up.

"PROTOCOL THREE: PROTECT THE PILOT."

There's another flash of light, and when you blink, you find yourself still in BLL's cockpit, though now you're back in the hangar instead of the digital VR space.

"I-I can't believe it!!!" Naru gasps as she nearly falls off the service catwalk in fright.

"BLL-0079 REPORTING FOR DUTY." Your Titan booms, his voice echoing through the hangar. "CURRENT COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS AT 50%."

"Well I'll be damned." Ramirez whistles as his Tone powers down. "Rookie actually pulled it off."

You then notice a Ronin is also present. It likewise powers down and Tarin steps out.

"Looks like Sarah made the right call, apparently." Tarin sighs and looks to BLL. "Welcome back, BLL."

"DO NOT THINK I'VE FORGIVEN YOU, CAPTAIN RICHARDS." BLL grunts, his optic staring daggers at Tarin.

"I did what I had to do." Tarin remarks simply.

"AND I WILL DO WHAT I HAVE TO TO PROTECT MY PILOT." BLL retorts.

Wow, BLL was pretty damn outspoken.

"I'm sure you will." Tarin nods. "All right, Rookie, you got yourself a Titan. Now let's get your gear."

"What? Now?" You blink.

"Something's come up, which means we're being dispatched on an emergency deployment." Tarin explains. "Come on."

"Um, see you later, BLL." You wave at your Titan.

"I WILL BE WAITING." BLL waves back.

"And Naru, get him combat ready." Tarin instructs.

"Can do!" Naru salutes.

"Within the hour."

"W-w-whaaaat?!?!" Naru goes pale.

"You heard me, do it."

You then follow Tarin out of the hangar and toward the ship's armory.

"What a troublesome Titan..." Tarin sighs when she's certain she was out of earshot, or aural sensors in the case of Titans.

Well, it was pretty obvious BLL and Tarin had a past, but you weren't sure if it was in your place to pry...

"Sooooo, what's this mission about?" You ask, trying to change the subject.

"Some scout beacons we left behind at Demeter picked up activity. A LOT of activity. Command wants us to scout it out." Tarin replies.

Demeter... you remember that battle was the turning point in the War, which cut off the IMC's only line of supply and decisively put the advantage in the hands of the Militia.

"But I thought Demeter was completely destroyed?" You frown. "What could possibly be left there?"

"That's why we're going to find out." Tarin says as she opens the blast door to the armory. "Now get geared up and let me know when you're ready."

You whistle as you walk down the rows of stocked weapons, noting that there was a lot of standard issue gear you remember from basic training, and quite a bit of exotic gear you've never seen before. However, it seemed like all the exotic stuff was stored in locked cabinets, no doubt reserved for particular Pilots. So instead you pick out a standard R-201 assault rifle. Tried and true and something you had experience with already.

As for your tactical gear, you pause to think.

MOBILITY: Tactical gear that gives you ease of movement around the battlefield. Includes the grapple, combat stim, and the cloaking device.

DEFENSE: Tactical gear that helps you avoid taking damage. Includes the A-Wall, Holo-pilot, and phase shift device.

You decide to go with a mobility based tactical gear, so you reach down to pick up...

GRAPPLE: A simple yet effective grapple gun that allows you to pull yourself to vantage points quickly, or in some cases, pull items (or people) directly to you.

COMBAT STIM: A powerful cocktail of drugs and stimulants that when injected, gives the user a temporary but potent speed boost and pain tolerance.

CLOAKING DEVICE: Allows the user to go temporarily invisible. However, this only works in the visual spectrum, and will not fool more sophisticated sensors like sonars and thermals.

You decide to pick out the grapple gun. Next is your combat armor, some grenades of various types, and finally, the one piece of gear that defined a Pilot: the Jump Kit. Basically, it was a small set of rocket engines you strapped to the back of your waist, that gave you short, rapid speed boosts that allowed you to move faster, jump higher, and even run across goddamn walls. It was a great, but difficult to use, piece of tech.

Then again, if using jump kits was easy, that meant anybody could be a pilot.

Now confidently kitted up, you grab your helmet and proudly trot over to the waiting Tarin, who scans you with her eyes for a brief second. She then give a slight nod of approval, probably relieved that you didn't forget anything.

"All right, we're going to be arriving on station in thirty minutes. Get to the hangar and get familiarized with your Titan as best you can. You're about to go on your first mission." Tarin remarks.

You... your first mission?

Christ, your heart was pounding like a machine gun now.

Hopefully it would be a completely normal and routine milk run, right?
