It doesn’t take long for everyone to gather around the railing. You watch from a distance as they arrive. You are relieved to see Reginald arrive safely, but at the same time you are worried because somehow, he ended up with Chuck as his partner to explore the 2nd floor. You make a metal note to ask him about this when you get the chance.

“What’s going on here?!” You look to the source of the mechanical voice to see Monoscrap running over to everyone. “As usual, the sound of his voice played through blown out speakers makes your skin crawl. “Isn’t it a little early to be killing each other again? Come on, most of you haven’t even fully explored this floo-“ Monoscrap’s voice trails off once he gets to the railing and looks down. The robotic bear stops all motion and there is a silence that is only broken by the pops of his speakers. You get the feeling that whoever is controlling Monoscrap is about as surprised as everyone else. Finally, Monoscrap turns around and looks at everyone. He speaks in an emotionless voice that lets everyone know that he is serious. “What happened??

Jeremy steps forward. “We were exploring the theater and she was asleep in one of them. As soon as she saw us, she just ran. We tried to follow, but she was too fast. Then we saw her body fall down from the 3rd or 4th floor and that’s it.”

Brittany Ann holds up her hand. “So, ummm, does this mean that we’re going to have another trial?”

There is some murmuring amongst the other “students”. Monoscrap stays silent for another moment before walking back to the railing and looking down. “No, any death that involves the railing does not count as a murder. I set that rule at the start. Besides, all of you were down here, by the looks of it, she did this to herself.”

“So who was she? I think you owe us some sort of explanation. After all, we don’t know what rules apply to people like her or if there are any more.” Reginald asks with his arms folded.
The bear doesn’t look up. “The rule is, everyone who sets foot in here is part of the killing game. No exceptions. All of you, her, even Mr. Olive are all players. She was someone who was stupid enough to be where she shouldn’t have been. That’s all you need to know.”
>>
>>1084721
Reginald nods. “Very well, but there is one last thing. What about you?” You can suddenly feel the air become extremely thick. Although there was already plenty of tension thanks to the new body, Reginald’s question only made things worse. Reginald continues acting unaware of the atmosphere. “If everyone is part of this game, shouldn’t that include you too? To be clear, I’m not talking about Monoscrap, I’m talking to you, ‘The Man Behind The Curtain’ so to speak. Wi-Fi can be unreliable when it comes to tech as high end as this robotic bear, and I’ve seen no sign of any input lag since day one. This has led me to suspect that whoever is in control is somewhere in this mall, so wouldn’t that make him a part of the game too?”

Monoscrap continues to look down at the woman. “I said that’s all you need to know.” The other students take the hint and start walking away to finish their exploration.

You doubt there is anything to discover at the sculpture garden and tell Svetlana that you are going to lunch. She nods and goes off to keep an eye on Jeremy and Gabriel. Although you arrive at lunch early, it doesn’t take long for the other “students” to start joining you. Monoscrap doesn’t talk much as he takes everyone’s orders and you wonder why the woman’s death has affected him so much. However, the strangest thing about lunch is that Reginald and Chuck are sitting along together. You can’t tell what they are talking about, nor can you get a feel of the nature of their conversation. After everyone finishes eating, they go their separate ways.

What will you do now?

Let's hang with Reggie
>>
Just as a side note, I'm taking some of the feed back from a thread or two ago and slowing things down a little for character development, so pick the characters you want to know more about.
>>
>>1085291
Anything you want to talk him about?
>>
>>1085300
Oh, about his chat with Chuck and why he thought pissing Monoscrap off was a good idea
>>
>>1085291
>>1085305
You decide that now’s a good a time as any to talk to Reginald about everything. You haven’t had time to talk to him since you disproved his theory at the trial and you hope he doesn’t hold a grudge. After a few minutes of searching, you see him walking into the Game Stop on the 3rd floor and follow him.

“Hey.” You say as you enter the store. Reginald is crouched down behind a display rack and looking out the store window. Seeing you, he gets up.

“I was just checking how well Frank could see while hiding in here. So far it looks like he would have only been able to see a small area while staying hidden.” He says while brushing some dirt off himself.

“Never mind that.” You say trying to change the subject. “What were you thinking? Not only did you go off alone with Chuck of all people, but you also did a good job of getting under Monoscrap’s skin. Come on, you should know better than to poke the bear.”

As usual, he just smirks and shakes his head. “I guess I should explain my actions. Chuck pulled me aside because he wanted to talk. Having one of his own turn out to be the killer was devastating for him. He honestly didn’t think it could happen since he believed everyone else was working for Monoscrap. Long story short, he wanted to apologized and talk to me about finding a way to mend the relationship between everyone.”

You fold your arms and smirk too. It seems that Reginald is starting to rub off on you. “Well that won’t take much work. Most of us seem to get along already and any distrust Monoscrap tried to build between us has just about been forgotten.”

“That’s what I told him” Reginald then lets out a small laugh. He really does seem more relaxed around you compared to how he acts when other people are around. The conversations you had with Jeremy and Svetlana about him drift back into your mind, but you do your best to dismiss any such thoughts. He then continues. “As for Monoscrap, for the first time since this all began, was vulnerable. Whoever that woman was, she was not part of his plan. I don’t think we were ever meant to see her and that has somehow thrown a wrench into his plans. The persona of Monoscrap broke because of that, so I took a chance to see if I could take advantage of that.” He then shrugs and shakes his head. “To be perfectly honest, I was making most of that up. Never the less, I struck a nerve and now I really do think that the mastermind behind all this is in here with us.”

You can feel goosebumps on your arms. Besides the first few days, you haven’t had time to really think about the main mystery about the mall. You still have no idea why or how Monoscrap is doing all this, nor do you know who he really is. You still don’t even have an idea why anyone from the outside world has come to save you.

What will you do now?

I have to ask you something.
If i watch the series your quest is based on, will it spoil the plot of your quest?
>>
>>1085435
You take a deep breath and try to get your mind off the main mystery, there will be time for that later. “Sooooo,” You say playfully. “about that ‘You might have a good memory but you aren't smart’ thing..." You do your best impression of Reginald by puffing out your chest and holding your nose in the air.

To your surprise, his smirk briefly turns into a genuine smile. “Alright, alright.” He says with his hands in the air. “I know when I’m wrong, and I fully admit that you saved all our lives. You have surprised me, but I was right to have you as an ally in all this. However, your strange mind works, it has proven to be useful. We make a good team.”

You nod knowing that even if another murder does happen, as long as you and Reginald work together there is no hope for the killer to get away with it. Maybe you two can even solve the mystery of the whole killing game. These thoughts fill you with hope for the future and confidence that you will survive.

I would recommend the game over the series, but that’s just because I know the show gets some hate for reasons I don't really feel like going into. Either way I would say that it doesn’t provide spoilers for the quest so much as it provides context for it. I’m writing the quest with the assumption that some things are already know such as the reason no one from the outside has come for them. Also, the ending to this is actually based loosely on a theory I had while playing the 2nd game that turned out to be completely wrong.

I would say that it would answer some questions, but it would raise a few others.
>>
Eh, why not? He is the most interesting character around

"So why me? Not the team thing, just. You know."
>>
>>1085973
Just to be clear, are you suggesting that we go down the romantic route for a character that we rejected on day one AND is marked for death?

I don't want to misinterpret that, and I would want to see how other people feel about it before I do it.
>>
>>1086015
Nah, just curiosity at this point. We are just barely starting to open at eachother. Maybe if they had more time it would grow into something, but not this quick.
'Sides Gabe is endgame

I feel like killing him is a bit of a waste. But i knew what i singed for when i stuck with this quest.

Not denying that would be TRAGIC as hell
>>
>>1085973
With the mood much friendlier, you start looking through the shelves of games that you have no way to play. “So why me? Not the team thing, just. You know.”

You have your back to Reginald, yet you can still hear him let out a breath and can only imagine him rubbing the back of his head. “Honestly, that was it. I saw you as a tool to survive all this. My original plan was to string you along to by my puppet using a false romance to manipulate you. I never thought that I would end up actually….” Reginald trails off and there is silence. You try to process what Reginald confessed as you continue to have your back to him.

Finally, you turn around and say. “Hey it’s almost dinner time. I’ll head up there while you finish looking into how Jordan pulled it off.”
Reginald is looking down at his feet. “Yeah, I guess I should finish that.” Without another word you leave and head to dinner.

At dinner, Monoscrap continues to be abnormally quiet and you can’t help but wonder what’s going through his head. One by one, everyone finishes their meal and heads out.

Hesitantly you call out like you did on the first night. “Hello? Who’s there?” Like before, the voices stop and there is an uneasy silence. You consider what to do next, but before you can make up your mind, you hear the elevator doors open, and the sound of screeching metal approaching you. Whatever stepped off the elevator is blocking your path to the mattress store and the safety of your bed.

Without any other choice, you bold for the Dillard’s and hide in one of the coat racks. After you catch your breath, you peek out to see something that terrifies you. Not one, but twelve different Monoscraps are walking around the halls of the 4th floor. All of their eyes are glowing red and they let out a rusted screech with each step they take. After about 5 minutes, they all gather around the railing and throw themselves off it. You flinch upon hearing their metal bodies crash on the 1st floor.

You make a break for the mattress store. As soon as you sprint thought the doors, you dive into your bed and do you best to go to sleep. The next morning, you get up, do your daily routine and go to breakfast where Reginald is already eating. “Hey I saw something weird last night.” You say as you sit down next to him. As time passes, you do your best to fill him in while making sure not to let Monoscrap overhear you. When you finish, he frowns and shakes his head. “I don’t know what to make of it, but if you look over the railing, that woman’s body isn’t there, so somebody cleaned it up overnight. Just to be safe, don’t let anyone else in on this. The more people who know, the more likely Monoscrap could find out.” You nod and finish eating before heading out.

I approve of your plan

Also observe if Gabriel is strong against temptation (like if he's desperate, would he abandon his morals/faith?)

>>1089028
You head down to the 2nd floor and see Gabriel by the railing. He sees you approaching and waves for you to come over. “Look at this.” He says as you approach. From the 2nd floor railing, you have a much better view of the 1st floor; not enough to tell what’s down there, but you can see the tile floor much better. Just as Reginald had told you, there’s no sign of the Woman’s body or any of the blood. You think back on how quickly Jenny’s body was cleaned up, so you are not too surprised.

“So, what are you anyway? Catholic, Lutheran, Mormon?” You ask wanting to move the conversation away from death.

You see him whence at the suggestion of Mormon, but he regains his composure before you can react. “I’m Methodist, or I was raised that way. Honestly, I don’t like to think about how much division there has been. If I could go back in time I would slap Martian Luther in the face for using a passive aggressive approach that led to the first split and a few wars. Sure, there was corruption, but that was not the best way to handle things.”

He continues to rant about holy wars, the printing press and the British monarchy, but you tune out sometime around The War of The Roses. Finally, you desperately attempt to change the subject again. “By the way, what’s up with you and Jeremy?”

The ‘Grand Faith’ lets out a long sigh and shrugs. “I honestly don’t know what to even say. She seems like a nice girl, but there are just some things about her that I just can’t stand.”

“Yeah, she does have some unique character traits.” You say trying your best not to sound too critical. “What do you think about her?”

He lets out another breath. “I can’t say I approve. In fact, I would like to get to know her better if it wasn’t for her behavior. And yet, I can’t help but be drawn to it. It’s like fire, hellfire. This fire in my skin. The burning desire is turning me to sin!”

You blink in confusion. “So, you like her then?”

“It’s not my fault!” He then grabs you by your collar and looks at you with fearful eyes. “I’m not to blame! It’s that crazy girl who sent this flame!”

He lets go of you and you take a step back. “Dude, are you okay? Really, I don’t think it’s your fault who you fall for.”

He falls to his knees and looks at you. “It’s not my fault if in God’s plan he made her breasts so much stronger than a man!”
>>
>>1089305
You are having difficulty believing what you have to deal with. It seems that Gabriel has just about as many issues as Jeremy, but on the opposite side of the spectrum. You feel bad for him being too pure to ever put up with her actions, and her being too perverted to calm down. It seems they both have feelings for one another and eventually one of them is going to snap and join the other, or they will find middle ground. You wait for Gabriel to calm down and then head off to lunch where nothing eventful happened.

You head to the Lego store to find Brittany Ann and Slate constructing more sets as usual. Judging by the number of empty boxes piled up around the back of the store, it seems that they have already gone through half of everything they can build. “Hey, how’re you holding up?” you ask as you sit down and start to help sort the pile of bricks.

The ‘Grand Cheerleader’ smiles without taking her eyes off her work. “I think I’m doing better. I’m starting to be able to handle being in this mess. I know using this place as an escape isn’t healthy in the long run, but I know I needed it when this all started. I don’t feel the same need to come here anymore and maybe I’ll be able to go a full day without needing to run away from it all.” You see a teardrop roll down her cheek despite her smile. Seeing this, Slate places his hand on her shoulder reassuringly.

“Are you sure you’re alright?” You ask.

She nods. “Yes, and even if I wasn’t, it wouldn’t matter. I need to stay positive no matter what happens. I envy all of you. You all are so strong, you don’t run away at the first sign of something bad, you face it and do everything you can to make things better. All I seem to do is run away and cry.” You see her hands start to shake, but they stop as soon as she takes a deep breath. She then wipes the tears from her eyes and looks at you. “Who do you think is next?”

You are stunned by the question while Slate is difficult to read thanks to his hood. “What do you mean?” You manage to nervously ask.

She looks down again. “Me and Slate have been talking. We’ve come to accept that it’s no longer a question of if someone will kill but when. It’s going to happen sooner or later. We can do things to make it harder like the buddy system, but in the end, that will only do so much.”

Slate nods. “Monoscrap knows how to push most of our buttons, so it’s only a matter of time before he does something to make one of us crack. The thing is, I have no idea who would be next. Reginald has a thing for you, so he won’t kill if it means you would die. The same thing is stopping Jeremy and Gabriel. Brittany Ann has difficulty just being in this environment and wouldn’t be able to handle having everyone else die. The twins are always together so one can’t kill without the other knowing. Finally, Chuck cares too much about the people on the 3rd floor.”

Brittany Ann nods sadly. “That just leaves you two, Mercedes, and Svetlana.”
>>
>>1089846
Slate shrugs and says. “Maybe, but there's just no way of knowing who will snap next. We thought it would be Jordan, but in the end Frank was the killer. Monoscrap knows how to set things up to throw us all off guard. I suspect the only reason he hasn’t given any of us a new reason to kill is because that woman threw him off his game for some reason.”

I think I'm going to call it here today. Sorry it wasn't much in terms or plot, but we got some needed character development. Also, Gabe's meltdown is probably one of the most enjoyable things I've wrote for this quest.

>>1089470
>>1089560
All of them have American accents. The Twins are more like what you would expect from the Shining, but that’s about it.

I’m going to take it slow to build up some character development before the next murder like one anon suggested a while back when I asked for feedback. I won’t say how much longer this is going to last. However, when this is all over I’ll be happy to share all the character development I had planned for the people that got killed off too soon. Just remind me.

"Nah, the Jordan thing probably wasn't planned. His memories were more of a burden than any help to him and Frank WAS the one who snapped"

Thank you for running, and hey, no sweat. I love these interactions.
It is nice to see that you took my feedback and decided to act on it.

It is nice to see you are having fun with the characters and WAIT A COTTON PICKING SECOND. It just hit me, did Jeremy said AGES ago that she remembers something bad done to her in the past?
I know it could be interpreted as Monoscrap locking us here but "It is not the worst than someone has ever done to me" implies something more distant.
>>
>>1090322
Is this the answer to >>1089850? I only ask because you didn't quote it.

Also, maybe I foreshadowed some of Jeremy's backstory, maybe I didn't. It's true I have a lot of plans and have foreshadowed a lot of possible subplots, but it's still up to you guys to decide if the story goes down that path or not. By the end of this I hope to wrap up most of the subplots, but there will be one or two that might end up going nowhere thanks to characters being killed that I didn't expect. For example, I doubt I'll be able to bring any resolution to the peso Slate found now that he's going to die.

Slate shakes his head. “We still don’t know if Frank really did snap or not. Sure, he killed Jordan, but it could have been in self-defense. He probably hid in panic and would have come clean when the shock wore off if it wasn’t for Monoscrap. All the same, it is just a sign we have no way to predict who is next.” The 3 of you continue building till dinner time.

At dinner, you see that Monoscrap is still unusually quiet. Your conversation with Brittany Ann and Slate has made you appreciate the current peace you have for however long it lasts. “So, have you guys made any more discoveries about this place?” You keep an eye on Monoscrap as you speak. You need to do your best to not let him overhear you when talking about the situation everyone is in.

They sigh and slump their shoulders. “No, we haven’t found any new clues about how or why this is happening. This time between killings has given us some time to start looking, but we haven’t had any luck.” From the corner of your eye, you see the other ‘students’ leave to go to bed.

They look to each other nod and turn back to you. “Sure, but let’s do it tomorrow. It’s too risky to be going around in the dark halls at night, especially on the 2nd floor. Any killer would have plenty of time to work and no one would know till morning. Besides, even if there is something, it’s already been days. If it wasn’t dealt with by now, then it will still be there tomorrow.” You agree and leave the laundromat to head off to bed.

The next morning you wake up to the smell of pancakes. It’s faint, but unmistakable. Your mouth starts to water at the thought, but then you instantly start to feel like something it eating away your insides when you realize what this could mean. After a moment to gather your strength, you hesitantly get dressed and follow the smell to the laundromat. Inside, a few of your ‘classmates’ have already arrived and started eating. After everyone arrives and starts eating, Monoscrap enters the room and walks to the center without a word. Everyone stops eating to see what the bear has in store this time. He attempts to clear his throat, but the speaker quality only makes the noise just an unpleasant burst of static. “Good morning kids. You know, I’ve been thinking, a few of you have become some serious BFFs during your time here and that’s a bit of a problem. You see, friendship is something wonderful, something that should last for a life time, but bods like that are much more difficult to maintain during this little killing game. After all, the only way out is for you to kill someone and then set everyone else including you best buddy to be executed.” You start to feel ill. Although you have no idea where Monoscrap is taking this, you have a feeling that it’s worse than you thought.

The bear starts to walk around the room while he continues talking. “My point is, I don’t want to see any of you kill your friends for the sake of this game, nor do I want to see you have to stop playing just because you would have to let your best friend die.” Monoscrap stops and looks at everyone with glowing red eyes. “So as a onetime only prize, I’m going to offer you a way out.” Your heart stops as soon as you see what is about to happen. Monoscrap jumps up on one of the tables and holds his hands in the air. “That’s right, this time the killer is allowed to save one person from being executed with everyone else so that they can live happily ever after! Let’s face that facts, the odds of any of you getting out of here with whoever you care about the most is low, and it’s possible that person could be next on the chopping block. Sure, you’re putting everyone else to death, but if it means saving that one person that gives you hope it’s a sacrifice worth making, right?”

Everyone is in stunned silence and looking to one another as if they want to say something but can’t. Monoscrap lets out a laugh. “Well enjoy the food and have fun!” With that the bear leaves everyone alone to process what has just happened.

You are filled with dread as you think about your conversation with Slate yesterday. Almost everyone you believed had a reason to not kill now has a motive. Time seems to stand still as you turn to look over to Reginald. You know that he has sworn to get you out alive, but you also know he doesn’t care about everyone else. The ‘Grand Prodigy’ has his arms folded and is watching everyone’s reactions like he’s done before. However, your heart sinks when you see a smile form briefly. This is bad, really bad. Reginald was willing to kill when this all started, and now it looks like he is planning to do so again. You want to talk to him, but you can’t risk any of the others overhearing you since that will just make him a target.

You look to see how Brittany Ann is holding up with this new revelation. She is looking around with a blank face making it hard to tell what she is thinking, but you do see that her hands are balled up into fists that are shaking. You see Slate come up behind her and place his hand on her shoulder. As usual, he has his hood pulled up to hide his face. They both nod their heads and walk out of the room.

Despite all the confusion, you walk over to Svetlana and sit down. Like everyone else, she is trying to process everything that has just happened. “Hey, how are you doing?” You ask.

She suddenly snaps back to reality and jolts upright sending her hat flying off her head. “Ah! Sorry, I was thinking about all this.” She says while bending over to pick up her hat. “What is it?”

You look around the room to make sure Monoscrap is really gone before speaking. “Look, me and the twins are going to head down to the theater again to see if we missed anything. That woman was the best clue we had and she got away. There just hast to be more.”

Svetlana looks around and sighs. “Alright, I need to get away from all this anyway.”

You nod and the two of you start to head out. On the way, you wave at the twins to follow you and all 4 of you leave together. As you leave, you spot Slate and Brittany Ann go into the Lego Store together. Just as you are about to get to the escalator you stop. “Hey, considering how things went last time, I think I’m going to get my bat just in case.”

The twins shrug. “Fine, we’ll wait outside for you.”

You run as fast as you can back to your bed to get your bat. You’re glad that you haven’t had to use it yet, but you are worried that you might kill by mistake if you’re not careful. As soon as you step through the doorway of the mattress store you stop cold. From across the floor, you can see Reginald walking into the Dillard’s. You start having flashbacks to when this all began.

You decide that it is best to let him do his own thing for now. After all, even when he was planning to kill the first time, he worked slowly to make his plan as perfect as possible. You then start heading down to the 2nd floor and meet everyone by the doors to the theater. As a group, you all make your way to theater #5 and start your investigation.

The floor is sticky and there is popcorn scattered under most of the seats. There isn’t any mold so it can’t be too old. Because of how much of the theater is covered in popcorn, you conclude that the woman might not have been the only person in it within the last few weeks. This still leaves the question if more people were here before or after Monoscrap’s killing game began, and who they were. You try to think about some more possibilities, but ýo͜u̠̩̤r̛̙͉̙ ̛͎̬͉b̤̳͙̳̫͚̲́r͚̱̙̖͞a͇̜̞̥̞͔͞i̶̱̤̩̗n̘̦̱̠͝ ̵̻̩̯̞̹s͏̙̪͎ͅt̬̫̩̫̗̬ͅa͖̩̪̰͕ṛ̼̦͟t͎̥s̻̱̟̱̟̩̟ ̟͈͍̯̝ṱ͖͈̻̯o̭͎͟ ̪̙͖͠h͈̻͠ṵr̢̼̯͔t̠̗̟̠. “Hey, I’m going to get a snack.” You say before leaving the theater and heading back to the main lobby. You grab a pack of Twizzlers and a can of Big Red from behind the smashed snack bar and just empty your mind until your head stops hurting. An hour or so later all 4 of you decide to call it quits and leave the theater empty handed. Because of your snack, you don’t feel hungry and skip lunch.

Slowly, you start to head to the 4th floor. You’ve put off talking to Reginald for too long and this needs to be dealt with sooner than later. You know that he’s going to try something now that he has a way to get both of you out and you need to talk him out of it ASAP. Before you know it, you are standing outside the Dillard’s trying to think about what to say next. Finally, you sigh and take your first step.

BANG!

Your heart stops and you fall down on to your back out of surprise. That was a gunshot. That was a gunshot. THAT WAS A GUNSHOT! Your brain is trying to process what you just heard. You can already hear people running towards the store. Your whole body is shaking too much for you to stand up, but you know you have to. You need to.

“What happened?!” You behind you to see Mercedes come up behind you.

“I- I was… I don’t know.” You manage to stammer out as she kneels down to help you back on your feet. Just as you stand up, Chuck sprints past you into the store followed by Sam. You can hear people fighting and then silence.

Finally, you hear Chuck’s voice. “Come on in. it’s safe now.” You and Mercedes slowly enter and your heart sinks. Chuck is pinning Slate to the floor of the store, and Sam is holding a gun being careful not to point it at anyone. However, that is not what you’re focused on. The male ‘Grand Twin comes up to you can places his hand on your shoulder. You can hear him talk, but his words seem to just go in one ear and out the other. “I’m sorry.” On the floor, Reginald’s body is bleeding out from a gunshot to his head. In one hand is another sharpened metal rod and in the other is a scrap of paper. Your ally is dead. Your friend is dead. Reginald is dead. You fall to your knees and cry harder than you’ve cried since this all started.

Alright, that’s a good stopping point for now. I’m going to take a few days off to start planning out the investigation and trial. Also, I feel like I’m starting to burn out, so I need to avoid that at all costs.

Hope you’re all having fun.
