It has been a rough week, you crash upon this desolate frozen wasteland, your wings freeze over and fall as if made out of wet paper. Three of your legs break from trying to climb down a ravine, you have to crawl into a cave and huddle for some warmth. As a queen these are disgraceful things, happening that should not have come to be. And due to your injuries your initial brood is not only weak but a mere fourth in number. And of those merely three malnourished ones survived. You thought and with good reason that perhaps you would perish in a day or two. But you have shown resilience beyond measure.

This world has thrown a great many trials your way, first the cold. Unforgiving and utterly ruthless, your workers would have not lasted long if it were not for ingenuity on your part. Then the starvation, barely held at bay, with food supplies being small, inefficient, and sparse. Your feared that this would have been your end. And it is still quite a fear, at any point it could become a liability. But then came the Keeks, these demonic animals have been the bane of your existence, wiping out entire parties of workers and even warriors. And now your flying scouts have been dying with no sign of what is killing them, other then the occasional message yelling 'metal'.

You stretch your mind a little and find those glorious workers of yours, the ones with wings. They are now tasked with fortifying the entrance to your hive. They will no doubt do a good of it. They take some of special eggs you make for construction and go about creating an iris of flesh and bone. It will sustain a good deal damage, more so than mere doors. It shall however, take some hours to complete.

As far as to what research is to be done you tell your first clutch of workers, your tiny little angels to assists the thinkers. We must try and find a way to mask the heat signatures of brood, as it seems the vile Keeks are able to track based on that.

And the other part of course is to find a ways to create a parasitic defense, after all the algae has proven to be deadly in great enough quantities. And you are still unsure of what dangers lurk ahead, there could creatures yet to be discovered that can poison your workers.

your miners report: "Mother we have done tunnel, very long!" You smile a bit, their message came just at the right moment. There now is a tunnel that connects to where the animals you can use as livestock. You will need many workers for this task at least 8 and quite a few resources 200 units.

but it could prove quite beneficial. However, you lack the workers to do this at the moment, you've sent most of them on the expedition to check the impact site on the other side of the mountains. You could lay more workers and use the hatchery, they could be ready in half a day but at the cost of 1/4 of the brood.

You have plenty of nutrient resources, and you can spare the time to grow with certainty. Unlike at the start where speed was of issue.

Your scouts will take some time to catch up to the expedition force, but they will do their job to the best or their abilities. "We fly for mother!" You love your brood, they are always eager to please.

The expedition in getting close to the mountains, it will still take at least two days to cross them. But something is bothering you in the back of your mind. A little nudge here and there. You cannot quite grasp what it is until all of a sudden a soldier stops.

"Cold, mother, cold." the connection is then cut, the rest of the group seems fine but this one seems to have died.

Another soldier loses its connection to you, and falls face first into to the soft white snow. What is going on here.

Upon checking the genetic design you find a flaw, all your Winter soldiers use endothermic glands instead of the much more efficient endothermic organ. However, this comes at a reduced cost, so any soldiers are cheap to make. But they cannot survive out in the winter conditions for long periods of time. Your workers do seem to able to withstand the low temperatures with some ease.

As it is, your two remaining soldiers will die, they have no chance in getting back the hive and they will most certainly not survive the march ahead.

you have had to make choices you dislike, and as such now your brood are less in number for the expedition. But learning from mistakes is also important. If incredibly deadly on this unforgiving planet.

Your drones are a few minutes away from the expedition now, the march has been relentless and soon the climb will be all there is for your workers.

some eggs are about to hatch, and you decide that perhaps a last minute mutation is possible. But is it something you want to try? You recede to the voices in your mind, the wisdom of the past.

My plan on how to hunt KEEK's.
Give our winter worker drones explosive glands so when they die the KEEN's are hit with chitin shrapnel.
Make a drone called "predators" with Camo, thurn launcher and toxin chitin bullets.
Send a 10 drone Explosive worker party outside followed by Predators hidden around them.
If we hear KEEK's we bait them into a trap with our workers, and shoot them with our Predators when they re feasting on the corpses.

Your thinkers decide that the best course of action is a thorn launcher, old, old design. But it will allow your troops to have some range capability.

Thorn Launcher – Powerful single shot projectile weapon that fires a high caliber chitin slug at high velocity, dealing large amounts of damage to a single target. Highly effective long range weapon, the only major drawback is its low rate of fire. Ammunition is naturally replenished over time as the warrior grows more chitin, and holds a medium amount of ammunition.

It will take 50N to make each unit.

And the other idea, was to make a toxin spew but that would require actual research time. it is up to you to decide on what to do.

Your mind switches attention the expedition two of your scouts have gone silent the remaining two are panicking, emitting fear signals so strong that they create a feedback on yourself. You lash out when a worker comes near and splatter him on the wall. nothing as such had ever come over your kind.

Then the image comes so clearly, and so sharply defined that it becomes seared in your senses. It is something you will not soon forget, and now you understand the last words of some scouts in the past days. METAL

You watch in abject horror as your poor scout is hit from above with a force of at least 3000 pounds. and So only one scout remains, It is alone, and in extreme agitation. You command it to look above itself, and in that split second the connection is cut.

Your workers on the ground, are plagued by unease, it is coming from your own connection. You are making them like so. However in that moment of mental absence, a predator has taken to attaching. It is massive, muscular and vicious.

It lashes out to your workers and tramples three of them under its powerful legs while it bites another in half. seconds merely, and you have lost 1/3 of your forces. Your circle the workers to entrap the creature but it only enrages it.

It charges, your workers dodge, expertly, but not before smaller ones, perhaps the cubs attack from behind. They cannot trample your workers but their bites are sizable. Three workers perish instantly. You could order these drones to attack the young ones , that way the parent cannot charge. But a priority thinking thread enter your mind, is there a mate?

And as if the universe wishes to respond to this. Two workers are swallowed whole as a create emerges from under the ice and snow. You only have six more and the odds are not in your favor. No matter what orders you gave and how you wept for the children you were forced to watch as they were trampled, eaten and torn to pieces.

There is no expeditionary force any longer, there is nothing but pain, and sorrow, and loss on that mountain pass. This planet will eventually break you. When you think you have one tiny sliver of hope it destroys it to oblivion.

Could we use whatever it is we use to keep our workers from freezing to death and find a way to weaponize it into a flame thrower and something for even further down the line and find some that will let use freeze our enemies solid so the rest of the universe can feel the pain this world has inflected on us.

No I'm pretty sure that is impossible, we use fat tissue and an organ to keep drones warm, a flamethrower uses flammable or viotile chemicals to burn things quickly.
Also I think we already have the blueprints for the flamethrower.

Yep, we should already have it, in the Alpha HQQ when our warriors were born we had a choice for what weapon we make first.
The weapons listed were Thorn launcher, sting caster and fire spray, they all cost 15 metals each.
