You are Alexander Pallas of House Pallas, an ancient and prestigious Rogue Trader House with a history that stretches back to the Age of Rebirth. A mercenary House that has worked closely with both the Adeptus Mechanicus and Officio Assassinorum, your fortunes, once mighty, have flagged over the past few centuries: the raising of many new Guard regiments and Skitarii battalions has led to the war markets you patronize drying up in the territories your House has operated in of old. It is in these circumstances that you have come to take command of the Absolution, a refitted Star Galleon that has been in the House for over 8,000 years, and has a provenance that traces back even farther, back into the Great Crusade. You have traveled from your preveious post as the Master-at-Arms for the frigate "His Holy Sword" to your ship's docking in the Segmentum Pacificus: the naval port "Iridescence".

Much of the past week has been consumed with the arduous task of ensuring that all the paperwork required for your formal installation as Lord-Captain is complete. As a result, you have yet to take an actual tour of your ship as of yet. Indeed, you have hardly had time to leave your apartment aboard the ship, save for the mandatory physical fitness tests and Inquisitorial psycho-examination for heretical tendencies.

>You are currently in your quarters, drinking a finely-aged wine while lying in your 10000-thread-count silk sheets. A staff-servitor is currently polishing the windowpane that gives you an overview of the station concourse. Your clothes (fine silks hand-crafted by skilled artisans accompanied by a scale cloak made of xeno-hide) rest on a nearby chair, along with your mono-sword, plasma pistol, and hand-crafted laspistol. You vaguely recall a message from your new First Officer informing you that the Absolution is dry-docked in lot U-7-Gamma. A station map provided by staff when you first came aboard shows that there are any number of amusements aboard the ship: gambling halls, whorehouses, and taverns dot the layers nearest the docks. There is also a Naval Office, Explorator Shrine, Ecclesiarchal Temple, Inquisitorial Base, Merchant Guildhouse, and Administratum Center aboard.

You put on your clothes, strap your mono-sword and pistols on, and proceed to the private dock access elevator your accommodations afford you.

The docks are a maze of bridges, elevators, void-sealed doors, and tramways strung out over an immense hallspace several dozen kilometers in length. Flocks of servo-skulls fly through the air, ferrying messages from docked ships to stationside contacts and vice versa. Ratings and crewmen from a dozen ships stream along the walkways, rushing towards the glory of shore leave or trudging reluctantly back from the same. Hanging in the center of this immensity is the Explorator shrine, the great Iron Skull of its masters shining from its tower. The Guildhouse of the great Merchant houses of the Segmentum hangs from one wall, bristling with bell-towers, stained-glass windows, and other signs of wealth and opulence. Far below you, in one of the dry-dock sections, hangs your charge: the gleaming, glorious Absolution.

The guards standing vigilant watch at the elevator level their hellguns at you when you approach, but quickly raise them back to neutral position when you flash them your copy of the Warrant of Trade. It takes 10 minutes for the elevator to finish its descent down to the surface access of the Absolution. You walk out into a vast hall decorated with statues of your predecessors: over two hundred generations of the Pallas line gaze sternly down at you from their alcoves. The lighting here is muted and subtle, giving the hall an intimate feel, accentuated by the polished marble floor. In the distance, you can see a group of crewmen struggling with a pulley arrangement, attempting to pull up a block of fine stone into an unoccupied alcove. A mezzanine level appears to have a set of chairs, a bookshelf, and a metal door leading off. A number of hallways lead off from this chamber on the ground floor.

Are you sure we could actually help?
In my experience, workers hate micro-managing managers who don't know the work and simply make a mess of things.
>>
>>1092358

If we step in and just start berating them that would be the feel, but having someone walk up and ask what is the matter and figuring out how to help isn't micromanaging per say, just helping out people who are struggling, who knows maybe they just need another body to yank on the pulley, or we can just order some more help for the detail.

For military situations I can say that it is nice to see officers occasionally out in the shit with you doing menial things, less resentment builds up
>>
>>1092382
>nice to see officers occasionally out in the shit with you doing menial things, less resentment builds up
I can see it for things with little chance of screwing up, but in my experience managers who tried to help and ended up causing a mess were resented more than managers who stayed away from both the work and asking too many inane questions.
>>
>>1092400

I can see where you're coming from on it, but we've been working on ships for our entire life and we come from a military Rogue Trader house, probably more focused on making sure that we know how to do work more than the trading focused ones

We go up, ask what's the matter and if we don't know how to help we make sure to order the detail someone to help on our way in, either way we make their job easier

You decide to take a walking tour of your ship, and head through the nearest hallway.

A half-hour later, you have begun to question the wisdom of your decision. The ship's layout appears to be highly unintuitive: snaking hallways full of dead-ends and strange twists and turns, blended architectural styles that seem to be out of entirely different ships, and even false doors that lead to nowhere dominate the space between rooms and chambers laid out with all the order and attention to detail of a drunken grox-herd. To make things worse, the crew of the ship seem to be avoiding you: teams of pale, sunken-eyed crewmen dart around corners and vanish as soon as they see you, or hurriedly pack up their strange sacks of knick-knacks and leave the chambers shortly after you enter. The tattoos, scars, and strange, primitive dress only serve to make this more unsettling.

>Try and chase down the next group of crewmen you see: you won't have your subordinates giving you the cold shoulder!

>Try and find your way to the bridge: at least there, you'll be on familiar ground.

>Try and find your way to your quarters: You could use some rest, and there are some personal effects that you should move in.

>Look around for an officer: Maybe they will be more willing to talk.

Disagree. Remember that the crew are not going to be acting this way simply because it was dictated for them to do so, they are their own distinct culture that has been living on this ship for many generations and as such it would cause all manner of trouble to come in and start telling them to treat us differently than their culture requires of them.

Obedience is obedience, if that's how they show it then that's just fine.

Also, we're not a nice guy from a long line of gallant heroes, so it's rather fitting.

"Show me the vital areas of the ship, Mr?..."

The servant looks briefly taken aback.

"This one's name is Aldrakus, My Lord. Please, if you will kindly follow me."

The servant leads you the hall, around a corner, and to a patch of wall that, to your eyes, looks no different from any of the other patches of dingy brasswork that dominate this hallway. The servant pulls on an Aquila embedded into the wall, and a hidden door swings open on greased hinges, revealing an elevator. You get in, and the elevator begins to descend.

"You are heading towards the Engineering decks, My Lord. The sacred Motive Drive and Warp Engine rest here, in the hands of the blessed Machine Priests. Normally, none but their kind and the initiated among the Ra'tyn are allowed within the Great Chamber, but My Lord can go wherever he wishes aboard his ship."

"Ah, very good... I must ask, Mr. Aldrakus, the crew seemed to be avoiding me earlier. Is there a reason for this?"

"Ah... the Ra'tyn are of the belief that to gaze directly upon My Lord, or to spend too much time in his presence unbidden, will anger the ship-geists. That they may suffer misfortune because of it."
You feel the elevator come to a stop.
"If My Lord wishes, we may enter the Great Chamber now."

"As My Lord commands."

The elevator doors swing open. The stink of discharged plasma, consecrated oil, burning metal, and steam letoff, combined with the deafening roar of the plasma furnaces, the squeal or tortured metal, the hiss of pistons, and a thousand other noises to leave you weak and spinning. Aldrakus must shout to be heard over the din.

"This one apologizes for the noise, My Lord! The last stages of the re-fitting are still underway!"

A squadron of servitors clanks on by, led by a tech-priest bearing a censer on a pole. A group of priests nearby break out into a chant in Binaric Cant:

"01000111 01101100 01101111 01110010 01111001 00100000 01110100 01101111 00100000 01110100 01101000 01100101 00100000 01100001 01101100 01101100 00101101 01110011 01100001 01110110 01101001 01101111 01110010 00101110"

Aldrakus produces a handkerchief from his pockets and tears it up before offering it to you.

"This one apologizes, but this is the best this one can offer to My Lord at this time! If My lord will follow this one, the Drivemaster should be this way!"

You are guided through the crowded hubbub of the "Great Chamber" and towards a raised plinth covered with hololiths and key-boards. The hunched form of an enginseer looms over the central display, his servo-arms twitching and clicking. Aldrakus sprints slightly ahead of you.

"Drivemaster! Your Lord-Captain!"

The enginseer jerks upright and spins around, revealing a bristling mass of lenses surrounding a vox-box.

The priest spins around (or possibly wheels around: his robe conceals enough of his lower half that you cannot determine if he HAS a lower half) and returns to examining the hololiths, chanting, and occasionally droning an order to a tech-priest clambering on the immense bulk of the plasma drive. Aldrakus guides you away, towards another elevator.

The calamitous roar of the Engineering deck falls away as the door closes. You pull out the wadded-up handkerchief scraps from your ears.

"You are now on your way up to the storage decks, My Lord. From there, we shall proceed to the landing bay. The Grand Owl clan are your pilots, although Wirlboun occasionally serve as well. Many of the Ra'tyn are fearful of them, but My Lord has nothing to worry about in regards to them. This one was once of the Grand Owl, until I was chosen."

"Chosen?"

"Yes, My Lord. I was chosen to join the Gilded Ones, who serve as My Lord's personal staff by My previous Lord, may his spirit find safe harbor. Only eighty other Grand Owls have ever had such an honor given to them in a hundred centuries!"

"What are your... former people, the Grand Owls, like?"

"We fight swift and silent, My Lord. Of all the Ra'tyn, only we are given the right to pilot the small-craft! Without us, only the great Thunder-Road would join Absolution to the Outside with safety!"

"You use these words, 'Ra'tyn' and 'Wirlboun'. What do you mean by them? They aren't part of the Lexicon Imperialis, or of any of the Void Cant I know."

Aldrakus inhales slightly and clicks his tongue before responding. "They are our words... we who are born in Absolution, we are 'Ra'tyn'. Those who are brought on, they are 'Wirlboun'... or if you are crude, 'roast-skin'. Not that this one would ever use such foul language normally!"

"Ah... who are the other clans?"

"... My Lord asks a difficult question..."

It emerges that there are, in fact, several hundred clans in all aboard the ship, ranging from second-generation Ra'tyn families with less than a dozen members to vast, sprawling tribes of over 5,000. There are, however, 12 'Grand Clans' who, traditionally, act as a governing council for internal politics and who act as an intermediary between the clans and the officer ranks, and who tribute their members to the ship's arms-men:

>Grand Owls: Oversees the use of small voidcraft. Led by Lainus Roaring-Dragon.

>White Spirals: augur maintenance-men. Led by "Snake-Runner", the ship's former Helmsman.

>Black Noose: Disciplinary corps. Known for executing traitorous crewmen by hanging them with excess cables from walkways or mezzanines and letting them hang for several days as a warning to others. Led by a triumvirate of nameless elders called "the Hooded Ones".

>Iron Wheels: They serve as the indentured servants of the Adeptus Mechanicus onboard. Members often indulge in the use of poor-quality cybernetic augmentations. Have no formal leadership due to their indentured status, but elect a "speaker" to serve on the council.

> The Striders: A nomadic clan whose members constantly patrol every inch of the ship for maintenance issues and report any issues found to the appropriate authorities. Every member has a micro-bead on them at all times. Known for sleeping in unoccupied chambers when the need for sleep overtakes them.

>The Gilded Ones: The smallest of the clans, who serve as the personal retainers, staff, and bodyguards of the Lord-Captain. They make up for losses in numbers by recruiting from the other clans: a privilege reserved only for them. They claim the Lord-Captain as their leader, entitling him the right to sit in and vote on Clan issues.

>The Green: Keepers of the Gardens and Arboretums. Led by a wise woman known as Granny Sura.

(cont.)
>>
>>1093436
>Storm Kings: masters of the ship's gunnery. Tend to remain uninvolved in the affairs of the other clans.

>Gleaming Harvest: Reviled by the other clans, they work under the Purser to distribute pay and collect tithes from the Ra'tyn. They usually have a member of the clan occupy the position of Purser.

>The Brethren of Tael: The largest clan at over 8,000 members. They do menial labor, and dwell throughout the ship. All claim descent from a hero-figure named Tael, supposedly a member of the first crew. Led by Adam Tael CLXXIX, who rules over his clan like a miniature Captain.

>The Night-Clad: A clan that claims the entirety of the bilges as their domain. Suspected by most to knowingly harbor the most revolting of mutants among their ranks. Led by Pale Savid.

>The Flame: The newest member of the Council, this Clan is devoutly beholden to the Imperial Creed. They consider Father Walpurgis their leader, despite his Wirlboun status. Led by "Blazing-Eagle".

Aldrakus finishes his speech as the elevator finally stops.

"The Aerie of the Grand Owls is beyond. If My Lord wishes?..."

After the sonic warzone that was the Engineering deck, the Aerie seems virtually silent by comparison. Crew clamber over, under, and around the ships in the converted cargo hold, tightening screws, hammering extra armor plates into place, talking with each other over recaf dispensers moved into the middle of the open space, and doing systems checks. The ceiling is covered with a rickety arrangement of catwalks, hammocks, suspended sheds, and rope ladders. All of the adult crew you see have the same forehead scars as Aldrakus: a clan identifier, you suppose.

As you walk through the quarters, a hush begins to fall over the room. Crew abandon what they were doing to gather around, staring at you (only to avert their gaze when you look at them). A mixture of awe and fear is spelled out on their faces.

"The Lord-Captain is here to speak with Lainus Roaring-Dragon, nothing more! You have nothing to fear from him!" Aldrakus declares from his position at your side. You see a group of men split away from the crowd and begin scrambling up the ladders, heading towards the largest shed in the ceiling shantytown.

As you wait for them to return, a small girl, no more than six at most darts out from the crowd and runs towards you, hand outstretched. You see Aldrakus reach into his coat and put his hand on a laspistol.

>Do nothing

>For the Emperor's sake, Aldrakus, don't kill her! She's a child!

"Hold your fire, Aldrakus. One must be cautious not to let instinct override good decision-making. And besides, what harm can a child do?"

Aldrakus stops, but keeps his hand on his laspistol. The child touches the hem of your robe. Looking more closely, you can see that she has fine red blisters on her skin- a sign of some kind of sickness.

"Please, Mister Captain. Talk to the Emperer and tell Him that I luv him verry much and could he please make me better?"

A woman breaks free of the crowd and pulls the child back, her face a picture of naked fury. She briefly looks up at you, and her features shift to a mask of fear.

"Please, My Lord-Captain, forgive my daughter. She is still young, and does not know her place. I will see to it that she is reprimanded for this outburst- just show leniency."

Aldrakus whispers in your ear: "My Lord, the traditional punishment for a Ra'tyn not of the Gilded Ones who lays hands on the Lord-Captain unbidden is to be branded with the Mark of Shunning and banished to the bilge-decks. That girl may have been a child, but if you show her leniency, what next? Perhaps, then, a child just shy of the age of adulthood shall think they can lay hands on you without punishment. And then, a newly-made adult. Soon, none of the Ra'tyn shall respect and fear you."

>Decide the child's fate (first three votes in agreement decide)

I know but sickness and shit like that is something that can kill a ship. We may need a new clan of medical doctors who roam, curing people.

A crew member from that society is telling us that such leniency would not be looked well upon, though.
>>
>>1093843
Disease spreading among the crew is certainly something that needs to be addressed.

But at the same time some mild form of punishment should be applied for appearances sake.

I'd say rations, but while she's off rations sent to the medicae.

You take a knee and lower you face to the level of the child.

"Know this, my child. The Emperor loves all of his subjects and answers the prayers of all the worthy."

You gesture to the mother. "Take your child and come with me to the medicae. The rest of you! Tell Lainus Roaring-Dragon that his Lord-Captain came to see him, but that other matters arose that forced him to leave. I shall see him at the next meeting of the Clan-Council, perhaps."

All present look shocked by your declaration, Aldrakus included. The mother, with eyes of silent gratitude, follows you as you stride back towards the elevators.

"This one does not wish to contradict My Lord, but... are you certain of this? Such a display of leniency has not been seen since the command of Lord-Captain Albert the Bleeding-Hearted, seven centuries ago. Some among the clans may see such mercy as a sign of weakness."

Aldrakus leads you on through the labyrinth of the ship's interior to a large, brightly-lit chamber that stinks of disinfectant. Medicae-servitors shuffle between beds and stations, suturing, injecting, and engaging in the most rote elements of the medicae's art. Genetor Sarcan, the ship's chirugeon, sits on a throne at one end of the chamber, overseeing his servitor's work with his six lenses and occasionally barking out an order with his intact mouth. A smirk darts across his face as he registers your approach, then vanishes.

"Ah, the new Lord-Captain. I am glad you've managed to find your way SOMEWHERE. To what do I owe this incomparable pleasure?"

"I have a patient for you."

You gesture the mother to bring the girl forward.

"Ahh... let us see here..."

The chirugeon suddenly darts forward and begins prodding at the girl with his delicate fingers, completely ignoring her cries as he jabs at her blisters.

"Ah... yes, yes... hmmm..."

He rises up and turns away.

"Nurgle's Rot. We'll have to incinerate her and quarantine everyone she's been in contact with for a month."

>"Hear me now carefully, Aldrakus. The law is the law, and it has been broken, but it is the duty of a Captain to balance justice with mercy. This child did not touch me in violence, nor in disrespect, but she called upon me as her Captain. Had she been either, there would have been no mercy, and the full weight of the law would have been on her, child or not! If I had been wounded in battle and fallen in a burning corridor, though, would it have not been her duty to lay hands on me then and drag me to safety? It would have, and perhaps someday she still may.

She laid hands on me now. But she was ill, and as Captain, I am minded to see that my crew is cared for, free from sickness and hunger. Let the others speak of this as they wish, but i received my rating in the Security crews! You would do them a service to inform them that I know well the difference between weakness and mercy."

"By the Emperor!"

"Yes. It is an especially unusual case of Nurgle's Rot because, you see, it exhibits none of the symptoms of Nurgle's Rot. In fact, it appears to be nothing more than a mild case of ion poisoning caused by a small child playing near the exhaust pipe of a fighter that was suffering a containment field malfunction. This is because that is what it is."

The genetor motions for a nearby servitor, which shuffles over with a syringe.

He picks it up and turns towards the child.

"This will hurt, but it will hurt less than NOT getting it."

He administers the injection with a steady hand, keeping the arm in a vise-like grip while the girl struggles and screams.

"There. I will need to keep the girl under observation for the next forty-eight hours to ensure no negative health-effects. I would also like to request permission to test the latest batch of vaccinations I have ready on her."

You turn to Aldrakus. "Let it be known that the girl and her family shall serve in the medicae chamber as Genetor Sarcan sees fit, with the rider that he may not intentionally kill them or convert them into servitors, for a period of three weeks, in addition to her status as an experimental subject. In addition, the girl shall attend a safety lecture from the Mechanicus aboard the ship every day for the month afterwards, focusing on safety around fighter craft. Other than this, no harm shall come to them. Let the news that this is how I handed this situation be distributed among the crew."

"As you wish, My Lord."

You kneel down and speak to the child again. "Child, things may be fearful and painful for you soon, but know that the Emperor loves those who show strength and courage, and that in your time of suffering, you are joined by the blessed martyrs."

You pick yourself up and speak to your guide again.
"Now, take me to the bridge. I do not care to see what happens next."

The bridge is a proud, open space built in a hidden, sheltered position along the vessel's back, with its entrance to the ship proper guarded by a half-dozen Gilded Ones armed with hellguns. It is arranged in three ascending tiers: the bottom tier occupied by various specialists, the middle by the helmsman and the senior officer seats, and the topmost by your chair, the First Officer's seat, and the chambers of the Choir-Master Telepathica and Warp Guide. The bridge is currently sparsely occupied: a man dressed in the plain grey robe of the Astropaths sits at the telepath's position. A tech-priest of some kind stands in front of the helm, examining the controls. A man in Navy dress uniform appears to be piling various metal shards and figurines from their seat on the Etherics console into a rubbish bin. And, seated at the right-hand of the captain's chair, a pale-faced, dull-looking man appears to be reading a book, delicately licking a finger every time he turns a page.

You approach Casmirre von Golgoth, your First Officer. The profile you received from the Master of Whispers was sparse on details: All you know is that he is apparently a "veteran" who took a job as a First Officer as a "retirement package", he is a cousin to the Pallas's and legitimate nobility, and that he declined to take the Captain's chair after your predecessor's death due to a self-proclaimed "lack of charisma". Other than that, his profile is essentially blank: no specifics on his military background, his family, his homeworld, or his date of birth. The lack of details on all of these were explained as "Administratum oversight".

As you approach, von Golgoth closes his book and looks up.

"Ah, Captain. I was wondering when you would arrive. You can go now, Aldrakus."

Aldrakus leaves, heading toward a door in the back.

"I apologize for not receiving you personally, but I had other business to attend to. I assume you have a general feel for how things operate aboard the Absolution by now?"

His tone of address is professional, yet informal at the same time: the voice of a man speaking to his equal, as opposed to the deferential bowing and scraping you've been receiving elsewhere on the ship.

"Quite an opportunity. What are the known risks?"

"Besides the obvious risk of journeying into territory that is almost completely unmapped? Greenskins, I suppose. Several WAAAGH!s have come out of that area of space. There's also the fact that the area is dense with newborn stars and nebulae according to astromantic observations at a distance: many strange stellar phenomena are likely to be found within it. Segmentum Command is offering millions of Thrones for each reliable chart with strategic data encoded, and I am certain the Merchant's Guilds will have interest in opening up new markets. In the hands of a sagacious leader, the Veiled Regions could be VERY profitable..."

I say we try to find a world in the area suitable for a base, defended enough we don't need to hang around, with a population suited for merc recruiting and economically connected enough for ready markets. We make cash from exploration and survey/plunder work at first, putting down secret bases/scavenger camps or conquering and looting as appropriate. We invest that into other ships and holdings on our base world, and try to turn it into the start of the pipeline to ship resources to more developed areas. With THAT cash, we build more merc forces (to give strategic options) and ideally...move into finance. With our mercs we could even do our own debt collection. Eventually we even become our own trading house. Our ships find a world, conquer it, put down a colony, ship resources back, and even lend money/provide forces for others to do the same.

Probably shouldn't try establishing a base until we've got a bit more bite and have done a fair bit of exploring, so as to pick something worth having.

Not to say we shouldn't stake claims of course.
>>
>>1094087
We should have insisted on following through with his first recommendation, just to be sure. And to tell him that his vigilance would be lauded to the crews so they would know who saved the ship.

Then told him it was just our little joke as well, and that we need to trust his expertise not have it rubbed in our face since it could have serious consequences for everyone.
>>
>>1094523
Nah man. Our ship is way too vulnerable alone.

We should either get some support for doing a mini crusade and ganking a planet right away - we can't be the only mercs currently out of work - or find someone to work with in the cluster. Maybe find an old colonization attempt that got cut off.

>Look for other distressed assets, especially exploration data, remnants of previous failed expeditions or unemployed scouting assets. Give us a leg up at a discount.

>Seek extra funding via: profit sharing arrangements with trading houses (we settle, they transport and get a percentage), mechanicus/Naval exploration and survey contracts, missionary contracts.

Finally,

>Pimp out ours and the distressed merc groups on "retainer" contracts for border worlds. Short version is we are paid a maintenance amount and can use our forces as needed. However, our employers have the right to activate us in event of civil unrest, invasion, etc. One group can be employed by 5 worlds easily, only active on 1 at a time, or never in its full strength (normally this would be impractical but we have a ship to transport as needed).
>>
Could we wait until the mercs actually go bankrupt but before they disband, and then snap them up for an even lower price?
>>
>>1095002

Reminder that by voting only on this one i'm voting against the other too
>>
>>1095013

This is viable, but I wouldn't want to do it for an established unit. Because we're hiring them as individuals at that point, we may get portions of the unit. We may get the enlisted men, but skilled officers may go elsewhere, affecting unit cohesion. At that point, we bear the cost of retraining to bring them back up to speed. Likewise, company assets (field hospitals, tanks, integrated transport) may not come with the men.
>>
>>1095031

It would work great if we're just looking for experienced riflemen and want to put our own officers in charge. We'll still need to retrain and equip but we get the units we want, not the units we buy.

Your HOUSE has over 8 million men under their arms: however, most of these men have been dispatched to various segmenta to compensate for holes in the regimental security net or reinforce active warzones (low-paying jobs, due to the fact that they are being done "for the glory of the Emperor"). If you somehow managed to mobilize every free mercenary under your House's banner to your position, you would be looking at around 200,000 men. The Absolution has about 10,000 men in its security forces.
>>
>>1095046

We'll just buy up the mercenaries like we voted and those numbers will be up in a sec
>>
>>1095046

Thanks QM. How are they organized? How many tank regiments, foot infantry, and so forth?

Also, given our teleportarium, we're going to need PROFORS ("protected force", i.e. boarding marines) troops for ship-to-ship actions. I think some sort of ship familiarity training should be mandatory for all our mercs, tho, but our ship needs a special unit. PROFORS troops get armored vacuum suits, and carry breaching equipment and nerve gas canisters. Nothing like a little Raid to take the starch out of an enemy crew.

"My Lord-Captain: negotiations with the mercenary sector have gone quite well. We have managed to acquire 20% of all financially-unstable mercenary groups operating in the Segmentum Pacificus. We now have approximately 1 million men under our arms, incorporated under the Void Titan umbrella group. This, of course, leads to certain logistical problems, primarily in the transport of so many men.

... An idea occurs, my Lord-Captain. These organizations control various bastions, garrisons, and hold-outs throughout the Segmentum, and now, so do we. If we were to liquidate these assets and move these forces voidward, we may be able to acquire a number of ships with the proceeds, which could then be used as carriers. With the 'Absolution' acting as the flagship, we could have a useful exploration force under our command.

-Yours in the Emperor's name, Elder Locke"

Only one of the bases is particularly valuable strategically: an old, half-derelict space station that you could channel your profits towards renovating. The rest can, collectively, be sold off for a decent profit to landlords, merchant guilds, or the PDF in exchange for Ship Points: some of those can be used to install new gear on your ship to stick around, while the others will be workshopped into new ships.
>>
>>1095623

Sell it all!

>>1095657

It all depends on how long is the trip actually, to have a base here would only be useful if it was a shgort jump away from the veil, otherwise I would advise to sell it and purchase equipment to mount an advanced outpost out there

>>1095623
Is the space station mobile / warp capable?

Send orders to the House accountants to liquidate the other holdings and move our soldiers into temporary housings: use the funds to create a new fleet. Now, call all men in shore leave back and order the Warp Guide to start reading the omens: take us to the first star in our new holdings!"

A few hours later, the orders are received, and Patronius Mckaal comes on deck, bearing a brass bowl containing a pile of bones. He walks to the Warp-Guide's platform, strips himself naked to the waist, and produces a bone knife from his robe. With a swift, sudden motion, he slashes open his palm and lets a fistful of blood spill into the bowl. On our clan crew auxiliaries in regards to ground combat, just thought I'd throw a lil fluff out there if anyone has an interest. There's a few of us at least that already got a Fury Road Warboy vibe off the crew as it were, now let us consider that RT comes from the 80s and is metal as fuck.

Dare we mix the rule of cool with practicality?

Think of Tauros technicals, motorcycles with hunting lances, war rigs of some sort maybe? Of course, these would be a supplemental force not our main fighting body. In any case, have a couple real world examples that we can work with.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9th_Infantry_Division_(United_States)#9th_Infantry_Division_.28Motorized.29

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Technical_(vehicle)
>>
>>1097857
Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

Not really feeling it. The crew auxiliaries are space forces, not ground forces. We have separate house troops for that.

I'd rather have something like a Conspirators wet dream Jesuit Army

>>
>>1097948
Well, yea, as I said supplemental. But, if we're engaging in some ground fighting and need to supplement our main ground force, have a touch of flavor why not
>>
..this warp jump is particularly shitty. Though we are going to uncharted space without proper lanes so.. I guess it's expected?
>>
>>1097954
Because it feels like silly just for the sake of being silly to me? I mean, don't get me wrong I don't mind us having those forces, but they should be one of the Merc companies we picked up or something, not the house troops of a historied Rogue Trader or our Naval crew sent down to fight on the ground for some inane reason.

>Because it feels like silly just for the sake of being silly to me?

Do you even realize what we are

A bunch of multi generational ship born primitives, geared up for war outside the ship. Just sayin, I think having them geared up in a bunch of light vehicles would be pretty neato
>>
>>1098208
> Do you even realize what we are

A Captain of a ship dating back to the original Crusade, part of a rogue trading house with a storied and venerated history, including a valuable archeotech Teleporter?

> A bunch of multi generational ship born primitives

They're tribals, not primitives. Well, no more so than the rest of 40k. But given our House's status and history I would assume that they would be trained with more effective weapons.

Where would they even get the skills to drive light vehicles? They live in a spaceship for gods sake. I could see an argument being made for H2H combat (less chance of puncturing something vital in the ship) but still you wouldn't want to use them planet-side where everything would be strange and disorientating.

Like I said, I'm fine if we picked up some Mercs that were from a feral world or something and THEY were like that, but it feels like you're trying too hard by doing it with ship crew.
>>
>>1098207
If it is, we're smacking him for joking about it earlier and making him do penance. That's what you get for joking about Chaos in 40k.

Also anyone who says "What's the worst that could happen" etc. gets to be the point man.
>>
>>1098217
I do recall something being said about the clans having a tithe related to our ground forces

But yea, they are pretty primitive by the looks of it. "Technicals" with las/auto canons etc don't seem all that ineffective, considering it'd be 2nd or 3rd line troops. Basically a Tauros with flavor.

Not saying we should be throwing portions of our crew planetside for everything or anything like that
>>
>>1098230
I could accept the Technicals, but maybe something like the Centaur instead which is common to the guard AND PDF as opposed to a specialist vehicle used by Elysian drop troopers.

Also do we even have mechanized forces? I'd rather spend money on other things if possible. Don't really want to get the quest too bogged down in ground wars, might as well reroll an Only War quest at that point.
>>
>>1098230
> Passengers in a Centaur can mount any heavy or special weapons they may possess to a mount on the vehicle near the front, adding their firepower to that of the vehicle.

It also gives more of a mad max flavour if you really want.

"Well, Mr Golgoth, what seems to be the problem?"

"It's von Golgoth, sir, and the problem is-"

"I wouldn't necessarily call it a 'problem'."

"What would you call members of the crew spontaneously gushing blood from every orifice, then?"

"An excellent savings in transfusion reserves. Just my little joke, Captain."

The chirugeon turns to you.

"It appears that an unknown disease has taken root in our ship, Captain. It seems to cause the body to produce an excess of blood. A SEVERE excess of blood. Even after death, in one case: their chamber had to undergo emergency ventilation to prevent overspill. An initial study shows that it is highly virulent and spread through unprotected contact with a previously-infected individual's bodily fluids. The only treatment I've managed to devise so far is constant blood drawing to prevent the patients from... bursting. I am working on a vaccine now, but I need your clearance to do anything more aggressive than vaccination work and treating those who are presented to me.

Allow me to be frank, Captain: unless we get ahead of this, this plague will give many of the crew a chance to get very personal with the Emperor very quickly."

The Master of Etherics starts tapping away at his terminal. "Commencing initial system scans, Captain."

"System has been mapped, captain. We've detected six planetary systems in orbit. The area near the star appears to be highly dangerous for navigation: large radiation bursts combined with gravitic fluctuations and star-flares. There... appears to be the detritus from a number of starships scattered around an asteroid cluster in between the second and third planets. That's not the most worrying thing, however.

"Take us in closer. Silence engines if you begin to pick up scanning attempts."

"Understood, captain."

The next two days are fraught with tension. You are blind to even the events happening aboard your own ship: internal vox systems having been shut off for stealth purposes.

Your ship eventually approaches a hefty planet covered in layers of thick green clouds such that the surface is wholly obscured. Two moons orbit it: even from your position in the outer edge of the planetary system, you can see lines of gleaming metal along the planet's surface.

"The second moon is the source of the comms signals. Passive scanning indicates no voidships in this area. Your orders?"

The Clan-Council meets in a former internal storage chamber that has been stripped bare. The sigils of the 12 clans are painted on the walls in oil stains, with seats set before each symbol in a circle. At the center of all of this, a sparse table is set, with 13 places, each containing a peach from the gardens, a breadbun, a cut of grox-meat, and a glass of brandy.

By the time you arrive, the other 11 members and their bodyguards have already gathered . Among their tattered leather garments festooned in tribal ornamentation, you stick out like a sore thumb. You take your seat under the outline of the ship that functions as the symbol of the Gilded Ones and look around the circle. You recognize 'Snake-Runner' from his pict in your officer profiles: he looks at you with barely-concealed hatred in his eyes.

A muscular, beardy man dressed in an ancient set of pilot's leathers adorned top-to-bottom with crude tin medals speaks up first: judging by the crude owl behind his seat, this must be Lainus Roaring-Dragon.

"Glad to see you could make it, Pallas. Sit down."

Snake-Runner was not offered a retirement package? His continued existence on board the ship will lead to trouble.

In the case of a Ra'tyn, a retirement package that involves leaving the ship would be like you receiving a "retirement package" that would require you to move to Bangkok and never talk to the people you knew your entire life ever again. Around 30% of your crew have never been OUTSIDE of the ship.

"None kill aboard this ship but the Black Noose."

> If anyone thinks that "oh maybe I was misken" now is the time..because by the end of this someone may be taking a swim in deep space.

We're a reasonable man. If there is good cause for the discrepancy we will try to help resolve the issue. While the bilges might not be glamorous, they're no less important to the good running of the ship that they can afford to be ignored.
>>
>>1102005
The process is different for each clan, but most follow inheritance laws (either in a direct, father-to-son way, or in a "succession by trial" manner).

If you need one of these guys killed, you can either:
1. Just have a Gilded One assassin do it (this would be taken... poorly by most of the clans, however.

2. Prove that they are actively trying to harm the ship for their own gain (by, for example, assassinating the heads of other clans, sabotaging ship systems, or worshipping Chaos), at which point the Black Noose will probably have them swinging from a concourse rail by lunchtime.
>>
>>1102056

Thanks. If we simply need to have one replaced? We are CAPTAIN.
>>
>>1102087
Can't really do that without mutiny on our hands since we chose to have a clannish crew rather than a professional one.
>>
>>1102109

I don't think that. There HAS to be some mechanism, even if it is personal challenge. Nobody keeps a ship who won't obey the captain.
>>
>>1102087
Yes, you are. And that gives you the right to appoint officers. These guys are not officers. They are clan-lords. Their families have existed on this ship since shortly after the Horus Heresy. Your family OWNS their ship, but in their mind, it is definitely THEIR SHIP. That they run for you, yes, but it is THEIRS. They are born in it, they live on it, they die on it: quite possibly without even seeing anything OUTSIDE of the ship. You trying to just tell one of the clanlords that they aren't in charge of their own clan is a quick path to the crew attempting mutiny.

That being said, there IS a way to legally force a clanlord, by their own laws, to cede to your authority: trial by combat of champions.

An important related note: in your role as captain, the clan-lords are obligated to give you respect. But during these clan meetings, you aren't acting as captain: you're acting as a clanlord, just like them.
>>
>>1102056
I take it that the Gilded Ones assassins are in no way connected to the Officio whatsoever?
>>
>>1102198
Nope: they're just crewmen with guns and stealth training.
>>
>>1102213
Could you pop a name so it's easier to spot QM posts?
>>
>>1102171

So...somehow this ship wound up developing a culture with no real mechanism beyond "mah champion gonna cut u" to ensure ORDERS actually get obeyed? We can't call them to administrative punishment, we can't relieve them at our pleasure.... what then? A "clan ship" implies full family groups and blood relationships within a department. That I get. Normally, tho, a crew member appointed to a position of authority by the captain, say... Port gunnery master, would gain Clan authority (only formal among the family) by virtue of appointed authority (shipwide), NEVER the other way around. The way we have it right now, no master would dare keep this ship, because something so simple as a grain shipment could be LEGITIMATELY held up because the clan loading cargo doesnt like the captains face.

I don't mind fantasy, but this is stupid.

>>

Think of them like states within a Republic. They have their own internal processes, that while they are subordinate to us they still have a measure of sovereignty regarding internal affairs.

Also WH40k.
>>
>>1102299
This guy basically nailed it. Also, the rank-and-file crew don't share the same mindset as their lords, necessarily. Most view you as a Pharaoh-like figure, and would only consider insubordination if they had both major motive AND the numbers to think that winning's an option.
>>
>>1101941
Seconding.
>>
>>1102245

Nope. Are you sure you're interpreting what "clan ship" actually means correctly? Legitimate question.

40k caricatures a shitload of stuff, but they generally try to write their stories in a way they make sense, enabling the suspension of disbelief. A clan authority structure with no real tie to the head of the ship doesnt make enough sense.

Now, a clan structure without formal authority makes sense. At that point, its a social club, the captain is there by tradition or sufferance, and the point of the council is to lubricate social ties all over the ship, preventing clan warfare. Family matters are mediated and social matters are handled within the council. Members are appointed based in clan tradition. In this mechanism, training and tradition are passed down and GENERALLY authority, skill, and seniority coincide. However, the captain is still able to appoint who he wants (although a wise captain will defer to expertise, preserving the clan structure) and administer discipline ( both of which are the only things keeping the keeping the ship serving it's purpose). The only difference is the captain can't remove a clan head except by death, any more than your parents can be voted not your parents.

If this is already what we got, it sure hasn't been clear from the writeups we got.
>>
>>1102327

Ok, then. So if they are subordinate to us, what are the limits of our authority?
>>
>>1102380

>>
>>1102437

>>
>>1102476
Well you've been informed as to how it works, so shut up and soldier, or ship out.
>>
>>1102380
Its the first. "Clan-lords" don't have any ACTUAL place in the chain of command: they exist so that, for example, tensions between two clans get to the point that people are throwing firebombs at each other, and to pass down internal clan culture and tradition. You can punish people AS CAPTAIN, but AS A CLANLORD you are only first among equals. Your OFFICERS are different from the Clanlords, and they are appointed by Naval code. If this wasn't clear, I apologize.

In summary:

Running the ship = Naval Code

Dealing with inter-clan conflict, day-to-day ship customs, etc. = Clan-Council.

It's simply that certain clans are associated with parts of the ship, due to a mixture of ritual beliefs of the crew, the weight of ten thousand years of tradition, and experiments in soft eugenics on behalf of the House Pallas (manipulating marriages aboard the ship to 'breed' better bosuns, pilots, etc.). When the Black Noose say that only THEY are allowed to kill, they really mean "we are the clan that makes up the vast majority of the bosusns etc., so we get to kill people when it's in the rules."

"+++AFFIRMED. GAINING INSIGHT INTO THEIR TECH-LEVELS IS IDEAL.+++"

"The term 'collective' suggests to me that we are dealing with a highly unionized collective economic system. We will have to couch our trade agreements in a way that won't offend their sensibilities: if we tip our hand too early that we're part of a mercantile dynasty, they may become hostile."

"These men have no fear of the Emperor, Lord Pallas. We must be deliberate in our action to the highest level, and unafraid of using threats. As the Books of Wisdom say, we must be like a fox to recognize traps, and like a lion to drive off wolves."

"I have no particular opinion on this matter, Captain: however, if we do want to negotiate with these people, I believe we will need to go to this fifth planet."

>Etherics Report: scans indicate that all planets in this system save the fourth have some level of human habitation. Orbital stations have been detected around the first, third, and fifth planets or their natural satellites. You spend the first day of the voyage spying on the Night-Clad in the bilges.

The Night-Clad live in the squalid bilges of the Absolution: a damp, poorly-lit and poorly-maintained realm of broken lights, leaking pipes, and massive mold-patches. Here, the Night-Clad do the labor that the rest of the ship would rather pretend didn't exist: waste-pipe repair, vermin extermination, disposal of spent plasma batteries: if it's disgusting and degrading work, the Night-Clad do it. You can see that most of the clan suffer from disfiguring skin conditions or minor deformities, with some so deformed that they flirt with Mutant status. They distinguish themselves from the other clans by wearing mottled gray-and-black headscarves that double as a measure of protection from leaks.

>Your on-ship reforms, such as the hiring of a new Twistcatcher of a less sadistic bent and the granting of fresh rations to them, seem to have made the Night-Clad well-disposed towards you. Loyalty: Loyal. The Night-Clad like rulings that improve their lot in life and that relax genetic purity standards, and dislike rulings that put additional obligations on them or which make genetic purity standards more strict. They currently want: better medical treatment.

You have dispatched a team of personal accountants and a swarm of servo-skulls down into the bilges to take account of the Night-Clad's total numbers. Unfortunately, a number of servo-skulls malfunctioned in the most humid areas of the bilges and lose their memory-banks from the expedition. As for your nine-man team, two of them refused to go down into the bilges on principle (they are currently being held in the Black Noose's makeshift jail-hall, awaiting your punishment ruling), three are in the medicae's chamber after contracting a virulent lung infection from a breed of bilge-fungus, one was ambushed by an exceptionally predatory mutant and mauled (said mutant has been hunted down and executed by hanging, followed by the incineration of the corpse in the plasma reactors), and the remaining two are missing (search parties are currently combing an infamously hard-to-navigate area of the bilges known as the 'Hell of Pipes' looking for them). >Report: Bartleby Tael, Chief Refitter. RE: Installation of ablutoria in bilges.

"Efforts are underway to create functional ablutoria in the bilge decks, as per your orders. Unfortunately, due to our remote location and lack of ordinary port-side equipment, we are limited in our options for the installation of said ablutoria for now. Our repair stores have a number of components (normally used for maintenance of fire-safety gear) that, when combined with scrap curtains, could be used to improvise showers in unused bilge niches. Unfortunately, this would eat into void-travel supplies. Alternatively, we could simply seal the lower blast doors of certain disused multi-level chambers and partially flood them to create communal bathing pools. This may displace a small number of bilge-squatters, but I fail to see any further downsides from it! The decision, of course, falls to you, captain."

You personally spend most of the day with the Grand Owls in their converted cargo hold, getting to know them. They appear to have a culture that combines the practices of certain Feral-Worlder war-cults with the rituals of Navy fighter-pilots. "Sky-hunting" is one of these: elite interceptor pilots, when the ship is in-orbit around a world with a biosphere will often take their fighters down in-atmosphere and try to hunt the largest airborne predators they can find to prove themselves: Lainus Roaring-Dragon holds the current record, having brought down an Eldar Dragon in a Thunderbolt, circled around, and killed its rider before the dragon could hit the ground: a deed painted onto the wings of said Thunderbolt.

Non-standard modification and personalization of aircraft is another Grand Owl tradition: each flyboy constantly tinkers with the targeting systems, engines, and weapons of their ship, shaping it to their personal use. In time, many of them know almost as much about the mechanics of small voidcraft operation as the Tech-Priests who repair them. the Grand Owls also do most of the day-to-day maintenance of their ships: adults not yet worthy of flying a combat ship do engine maintenance and small repairs, teenagers refuel the craft and reload their weapons, and the younger children help paint the hulls or remove fiddly bits. Children of the Grand Owls have their heads shaven until they reach adulthood (marked by a ritual in which they carve four vertical scars into their foreheads with a dagger forged from a destroyed bomber). Afterwards, they grow their hair until they fail in an assignment (non-combat members of the clan are allowed to grow their hair out, but must remain clean-shaven by clan custom). The most successful pilots have wild, unkempt manes and bristling beards underneath their piloting void-suits. Combat is a male duty: the women of the Grand Owl drive transport craft instead.

>The Grand Owls hold no ill-will towards you, but are not particularly in debt to you either. Loyalty: Reliable. You aren't quite certain of their likes or dislikes yet. You don't know what, in particular, they want.

You have one day left until you reach the fifth planet.

You deploy a second survey team down into the bilges to get a head-count of the Night-Clad: this time with an armed escort, environmental suits, and armor. They manage to come back intact, and with accurate figures for the Night-Clad's numbers.

You try to spend the final day spying on the White Spirals, but they tend to fall silent and leave whenever you enter a room with them, and their quarters are, apparently, under maintenance. Even using servo-skulls seems to be to no avail. Eventually, you just give up and withdraw to your quarters.

The next day, your ship enters orbit around the large, imposing fifth planet: two major continents dominate the seas of this world, both bristling with green. Clearly, this planet is a stronghold for life in the void. An orbital void-docks hangs above this world: the design is clearly based off of sanctified STC patterns.

"Captain, the void-docks are sending a standard inquiry hail to us! How do we respond?"

"Locking geosynchronous orbit... now, sir. Preparing for lander launch."

Your personal lander crosses the void between your ship and the port.

The docks of this port are painted cold silver. the beautiful vaunted arches, stained glass, and skull-mounts of Imperial architecture are absent, replaced with a brutalist, functional design. A man in a plan grey suit with red highlights receives you and your escort (which includes your High Factotum and Master-at-Arms) at your dock. His outfit is almost without decoration.

"Greetings, stranger. I am Station Director Sandrin of the Worker's Collective of Ambaria. The Oversupervisor is eagerly anticipating diplomatic talks, but is unfortunately preoccupied for now. I have been instructed to show you the public areas of this station, before you head to the surface."

Harald sniffs the air. "This place smells too clean. Like a dead thing that is nothing but bones." he says in Low Gothic. You're inclined to agree: the air has a sterile quality not usually found on stations, where the air often has a powerful 'character'.

"I told you, My Lord. Collectivist unions."

>Capital! Take us away, Station Master, I can't wait to see your technology!

>Not to offend, but I would rather just cut straight to the planet's surface. I'm certain your technology is very impressive.

"Alright. This way."

The station halls are metallic and barren.

"This is the loading dock (sparse, mostly empty). This is the unloading dock (sparse, mostly full). Here are the crew quarters (minimalistic). Here is the monitor station (grey, full of laborers clicking away at strange-looking cogitators). These are the public areas. Now, here are the docks. Here is your landing craft. Good day."

The Station Manager seems to be eager to rush you off the station.

"Very well. Goodbye, Station Manager."

The manager does not respond as you proceed forward.

Immediately, you notice that the passage indicated does not lead to your lavishly-appointed personal lander. The ship attached to this dock appears to be a landing craft of native design. Two men in grey military uniforms stand at guard at the door, carrying lasguns of functionalist design. In front of the door, a well-heeled officer of some kind stands, hands behind back.

"Ah. Good day, Captain?..."

Well, there are 6 flavors of Officio Assassinorum Assassins:
>Callidus
Already covered, but kind of important to note that they're the only one of the OA that operate like traditional assassins: infiltrate enemy base, kill commander, vanish. The fact that they can literally be anyone and are armed with an ancient sword that only cuts flesh (as in, passes right through armor without touching it and cuts the flesh inside) and a gun that overloads the CNS with an energy pulse makes the actual HIT pretty easy.

>Vindicare
Deadshot-tier snipers. Use highly advanced sniper rifles armed with rounds adapted for any scenario, including killing Daemons behind force-fields and blowing up giant mechas. See a lot of deployment alongside the Imperial Guard as sniper elites.

>Eversor
Mass murderers and other death-row inmates pumped full of combat drugs and brainwashed into being one-man engines of slaughter. Armed with what boil down to hand-held chainguns, power swords, bladed combat claws coated with the most lethal poisons in the galaxy, and with a cocktail of chemicals that make their bodies go off like a briefcase nuke when they're about to die, Eversors are less "assassins" and more "terror weapons": unleashed on entire settlements that have fallen from the Emperor's light so that the SURROUNDING areas can see the smoking ruins, piles of corpses ripped to shreds, and general carnage and then never, EVER think about heresy ever again. Have to be kept in cryo-stasis when not in use and fired down onto their target using a deployment torpedo, and retrieved using psycho-conditioning-induced comas due to their tendency to kill everything in their sightline.

>Culexus
Nulls- basically anti-psykers- armed with Null-enhancing tech and trained to kill high-power enemy psykers. They can turn invisible (of the mental-block variety), suck people's souls out of their bodies by making skin or eye contact, literally scare people to death, and are agonizing to be around for anyone even mildly psychically active.

>Venerum
These guys are master alchemists, capable of engineering and deploying poisons that kill in a thousand subtle ways and enter your body completely undetected. They also dabble in insanity-inducing and mind-controlling drugs as well.

>Vanus
The closest thing to 1337 Hax0r5 in 40k. Vanus assassins are masters of information warfare and manipulation, engineering a thousand million coincidences to lead to their target's death. A Vanus assassin kills from half the galaxy away, using another's hand and mind (usually without their knowledge).

pic related: from left to right, Culexus, Vanus, Vindicare, Eversor, Callidus, and Venerum. The Daemon in the background? Least dangerous thing in the pic.

"But of course, Captain Pallas. Your full entourage is more than welcome to join you! We're all friends here, are we not?"

You board the ship with your entourage. It is clear that this lander is a converted cargo lighter, long-ago made into a personnel transport. The seats are a cheap model, made with seats that automatically fold up by means of a spring when not actively being sat in. You take a seat in one of them, while the unnamed Head of Foreign Relations sits alongside you.

"I must say, these drones of yours are incredible! The attention to detail in the ivory decoration: highly convincing! Your people's aesthetic sense is very avant-garde. How do you keep them aloft without a rocket propellant, or a fan?

I must say, we are very excited to have you here! Our Oversupervisor has organized a parade in your honor in Brotherhood Plaza, and even now, I am told, the people of Othhaw Administrative Bloc Alpha are assembled in celebration of our coming alliance!"

The functionary rushes to the lander's door. "I think it would be best, for the optics, if the two of us exit at the same time. Come, come!"

Without waiting for your response, the door is pushed open and you half-walk, half-stagger into bright sunlight.

The square in front of you is clean and elegant, and filled with soldiers in grey parade uniforms. Barricades hold back a plainly-dressed crowd, who begin cheering wildly and throwing some kind of native flower onto your path, which winds on a red carpet between the privates and tanks to a platform of some kind. Strange devices, not entirely dissimilar to servo-skulls (though made of some kind of plasteel and held in the air by four fan-rotors) hover here and there, observing you and the crowd alternately. Behind the platform towers a monument, capped with a golden sculpture of a human hand grasping... is that a claw? It has three fingers instead of four, and nails like blades!

The functionary grabs your hand and raises it in the air triumphantly, beaming in a way that barely looks forced. He shoots you a brief, urgent glance.

You beam in a stately manner to the crowd and proceed down the platform and along the carpet. As you proceed, you notice that the people here seem to be awestruck by your entourage: your bodyguards in full void-suit apparel; your bonded accountants with their golden chains and shaved heads, account-books always at their side; the Calligraphus shuffling along, dutifully recording all that its sensor-network perceives; Harald, tall, muscled, and noble, with his greatsword strapped to his back and shotgun strapped to one leg; Elder Locke, in his understated robe and tattoos of scholarly rank; you, in all your finery and grace, rings glittering from each finger, necklaces and pendants hanging like chain-mail along your neck, and clothes more expensive, you have no doubt, then any one of the nearby armored vehicles; and the servo-skulls swarming above you like machine-born flies. You reach the platform, where some cushioned seats have been set out for your entourage (including, mysteriously, the Calligraphus).

Your functionary steps forward to a lectern positioned near the front of the platform and begins speaking into a number of microphones.

"Comrades! Noble, gentle comrades! Today is a great and wonderful day for the Collective! For YOU, comrades! Our ever-vigilant monitoring stations, just a few days ago, detected an object moving through this system; a spacecraft, from another world! And, more incredible, so many aspects of it were so similar to our designs: simply writ larger! The words of the Founder once again prove guided by infallible wisdom: we are not the only Men among the stars! This fine man, Captain Pallas, has journeyed an incredible distance to meet our noble culture and to open up diplomacy between his government and our own, so that soon, our Brotherhood may grow even larger: not through force of arms, as it was at first with the Androxians, but through mutual understanding and reason! A victory for the worker! A victory for the soldier! A victory for every man!"

The crowd chants the last three sentences back in a practiced tone.

"And now, our new comrade will say a few words!"

The functionary steps back and offers you the lectern.

If we're lucky they'll be paying tribute to these Androxians which means they'll have all the infrastructure in place to begin sending their tithe to the Administratum via House Pallas once we 'convince' them to rise up and throw off the xenos shackles.

YOU. You are no longer alone in the void. Mankind will stand together and with the light of His Majesty's grace, we will push back the darkness and unite the galaxy under the rule of man.

In the Name of the Emperor.

Man, if we make a public declaration of anexation and religion we may force the governors hand to respond with force.

we should keep those talks private

my suggestion using your text because I'm terrible at this and yours is pretty good:

"My fellow Humans, as a representative of The Imperium of Man, it is my honour to stand before all of you.
We have travelled vast distances to this area of space and now that we know of your existance, more will follow in our footsteps.
In the coming days I expect to begin negotiations with your government to improve the lives of all humans in a greater galactic society of man

Not specifically this but something along these lines...

Introduction of their system into "the greater galactic society" is not exactly annexation and is worded to be ambiguous. It could also very easily mean inducting them as a peer planet into the wider society of planets in the galaxy. If it was annexation, it would be much more forceful like "we stand ready to welcome you into the folds of the Imperium".

Also religion may be something that is well repressed here in this system. As a wide broadcast with a large live audience, they can't easily censor us unless they use time-delayed pic-casts to other centres but there'd already be those in the audience who hear our words.

So either we expose the presence of a new religion that the government does not want the general populace to know of, creating a possible means of which to begin overthrowing the current government for one in favour of the Imperial Cult or there is religious freedom and we are free to spout what we wish.

It can only end in our favour.
>>
>>1113199
The religious part I don't agree, if they can censor it or not it doesn't matter, what it can create is an animosity in the higher ups before we even start to talk and learn what they hold dear.
I bet that with all that we saw so far about collectivism and the greater good of society they will adapt to the creed farly well, but I'm voting to hold on it a little longer so we can learn more about them and specially about those bladed-fingered aliens and what they represent for this people

"People of the Ambarian Worker's Collective! In the name of the Imperium of Man, I greet you! I apologize for the underwhelming nature of my entourage, but this speech was rather last-minute. If I had had more time, I would have put together a display far more worthy of your time and attention. I must say- I have only been on your planet for a little while, and already, I am astounded, just astounded, by your accomplishments! To think that your people, with a fraction of the Imperium's resources, have accomplished so much speaks incredible amounts about your character, work ethic, and moral fortitude. Great things are in the future for you, I am certain, and- by allying yourself to the Imperium- I guarantee what you will reach new heights of prosperity, the likes of which were but a dream to you less than a week ago!"

The crowd begins cheering as you finish your speech. A choir group launches into a song about the virtues of hard, honest labor and self-sacrifice as the military parade begins in proper.

Harald snorts. "These are garbage weapons. Such a blocky gun design! And those tanks are beneath par. How have these people even survived?"

"Through dire heresy, Master-at-Arms. Look at that monument. They betray their sacred genes by deigning to ally with filthy xenos, and they boast of it! These fools are in dire need of the Emperor's light."

The Head of Foreign Relations turns to you after the parade is over.

"Our military is quite advanced, Captain. This is but an outpost of the Collective's might! Ten whole systems lay within our territory!"

"No, but what does that matter? Economic theories have no dependence on species, and their workers were suffering under the heel of a tyrannical military state! Our glorious navy brought them swiftly to heel, and now they are undergoing a restructuring of their government to bring them in line with our centrally planned system! Ah, but I am getting ahead of myself- you should really discuss this sort of thing with the Oversupervisor."

You are taken in a motorcade to a large building in the center of the city: a statue of a distinguished looking elder stands outside of the front doors. The writing system they use is similar enough to Low Gothic that you can read it: OUR GLORIOUS FOUNDER.

You are escorted through part of the building, up to a security blockade. The Head turns to you.

"I am afraid I must ask for your weapons and for you guards to wait here, Captain Pallas: purely as a safety precaution. I give you my word that no harm will come to you if your intentions are pure."

The Head nods. "That is perfectly reasonable."

You hand over your mono-sword and pistols to the security guards on duty and continue down the hall, minus the rest of your bodyguards. You pass a number of doors on the hallway you travel down: one of them has a label that catches your eye: DEPARTMENT OF PRE-CRIME.

Eventually, you reach a stark conference room, with concrete walls, solid-metal chairs, and small, highly-placed windows. A pale, severe-looking man sits at one end of the table, flanked by guards. He radiates power and authority like a lighthouse. He gives a brief glance to the functionary: "Leave, Comrade Andrei. I will take things from here."

"A-as you wish, Comrade Karlyle."

"Good."

He turns to you.

"I am Karlyle Promas, and I am the Oversupervisor of this planet on behalf of the people. When you deal with me, you are dealing with the people of Othhaw, understand? Good. Now, I believe that we have much we can learn from each other to mutual benefit. Let me lay down my first offer: thirty dozen tons of enriched uranium for the eight drones in your possession. This should cover the trip back to your Imperium."

>What would I want with something so crude as radioactive material? Only the Mechanicus has interest in such backwards technology!

On the one hand, it could be cool just leaving them be and trading, but on the other aren't we trying to expand our influence? Rather, stake our claim in uncharted territory? Eventually they'll have to be brought to heel just the same.

"Your amasec, sir, as requested, and may I just say you look EXCEPTIONALLY dashing and regal today? Macharius himself could scarcely look more gallant, if I do say so myself."

"Thank you, Roger. As you can see, teleportation is well within the power of the Imperium. Shall I take you aboard my ship for a closer look, Oversupervisor? It will only take a minute for the teleporter to recharge."

"..."

"I will take that as you politely declining." You pour yourself a glass using the ingenious stopper-glass design of the amasec decanter. "Tell me, captain, how do your ships navigate the space between the void?"

"Please answer Lord Pallas, sir. His Grace does not like to be kept waiting." Roger chirps.

Well, let us consider how the Imperium generally does give a great deal of autonomy to the locals so long as they pay their tithes and aren't heretical shits.

They may rule themselves as a collective all they like, but they shall bend the knee.

You see him briefly pause, and his eyes widen.

"Shit! Cap- Lord-Captain Pallas, we need to do something immediately!"

"Which would be?"

"No time to easily explain, we must go, now! Guards, to me!"

Karlyle rushes to the door, drawing some kind of autopistol from within his robes.

heavy assault might actually be abit counter productive. Since if we call in our forces, it'll be as a defensive measure to protect our persons. A strike team with attached combat medicaes equipped with boarding shields to provide cover against hostile fire.
>>
>>1114622

I'd want the response team to be flexible, it could be that we need to support the Overseer in an action and we do still have our bodyguard with us
>>
>>1114622
Agreed, but those are no good if we encounter enemy armour or air cover. Which is why I said we should have a sorte of orbital-ground fighters prep to launch.

Alternatively, we could always teleport out along with the new governor.
>>
>>1114630
I say we go for both. Heavy combat team supplemented with meducae. Probably bias the fighters toward closecombat troops, the locals don't look like theyd expect melee charges.

I'd hold off on the aircraft for now, get them redy but don't launch until the situation is clearer

You send a message explaining the situation up to the Absolution via micro-bead. "Understood, Captain. Dispatching emergency strike crew to teleportarium now." With the call placed, you follow Karlyle's team down the hallway and through the door labeled DEPARTMENT OF PRE-CRIME.

You see a large, disc-shaped device in the center of a large chamber, with hololiths and command-boards on all sides. Men in grey suits are desperately tapping away on the boards, while a number of security guards are leveling their firearms at the door. One, wearing a hat that appears to denote officer rank, barks at your group:

"Karlyle Baker, by intending to hand over power to a foreign, fascist, religionist government, you are hereby found preemptively guilty of crimes against the people and are sentenced to death, along with your collaborators. News of your betrayal is already on it's way to the Supreme Director's Office, and soon, this so-called "Imperium"shall be liberated by our glorious fleet in the name of the Founders."

"You fools! We will all die in open war against them! They are willing to peacefully incorporate us without interfering with our way of life!"

"The lies of a traitor. Men, prepare to open fire!"

On a related note, I need an anon to roll 2d10 for the Fate Points spent in this session: every 9 means you keep one fresh!...

(BURNING Fate Points, which let you automatically roll a 01 in a given circumstance or to survive against all odds in a lethal situation, is different: they're gone forever, and you can only get them back through acts of exceptional skill and courage without using Fate Points in the first place.

A massive clap of thunder erupts behind the guard-line, and your voidsmen rain screaming laspulse death on the exposed backs of the enemy. As they wheel about to defend, Karlyle's loyal guards charge.

The scuffle is brief and bloody, with your men standing on top. You turn to Karlyle.

"Well, I believe we have a colony to discuss..."

Stopping here for tonight, probably be back around 1PM EST, but before I go:

TIME TO UPGRADE!

It's odd, but I actually like it. It adds an additional element of randomness.

Too many quests are easy and the MC never suffers real consequences. We gambled big this thread and had to sacrifice some fate points to achieve our goal.

I like it, it's new plus it's the best way of preserving the inherent flavor of 40K rpgs, none of them are easy and you're supposed to slog through it. The only reason we were able to recover so well was because of our rerolls which I don't think anybody remembered we had until 4/5ths of the way through the thread

Some people complain that it's supernaturally predisposed to critfails because everyone makes a massive deal about them while not paying attention to equally common streaks of crit successes.

>>1115230
Having the QM roll to choose from our rolls is the best method to allow multiple people the chance to contribute without having to work around an average result of 80 (plus some bizarre standard deviation). The only other choice is to go with something like 'always choose the 3rd roll' but that might just result in no one wanting to be the first to roll.

We should look into getting some concealed weapons like a digital laser ring or even sword cane. The last should be easily doable.
>>
>>1115485
Looking through the core book it's really no big deal. Now, since we're a RT we need something fancy and garish.

I don't see anything wrong with being loaded down with a ton of pistols, real pirate like. Arm braces for sleeve guns are in the book, and compact versions of weapons too. Also a poison ring. Archeotech laser eye is in there too. Super fancy single shot laser dueling pistols too.

In any case, a sleeve gun and some holdout weapons would be pretty easy to manage I think. Really like the idea of the poison ring too.
>>
>>1115498
Damage wise, it isn't a great deal but it is a weapon that can immediately escape detection and be brought into any secured area. That is its usefulness, a weapon of last resort that is unexpected, allowing us to secure a better weapon.
>>
>>1115511
Well yea

Also something to keep in mind is our Plasma pistol possibly overheating, since we already have quickdraw it'd be piss easy to drop it and whip out another pistol
>>
>>1115517
Of course. But standard weapons would be a simple matter for us to acquire. We're the Master of a Mercenary House, we could easily draw a good quality bolt pistol from the officer armouries and we'd have our additional gun. I mention getting the digital weapon as it is something that is not so easily sourced, unlike the additional sidearm.
>>
>>1115527
I know.

Hence saying we need something fancy and garish. Reading through the book right now to see about some fanciful shooters we should try and get.

Compact bolt pistol or laspistol should do just fine.
>>
>>1115531
>>1115527
We could get an Archotech pistol or infernal pistol or something like that.
>>
>>1115536
Yea. Probably not so easy tracking down out here in the boonies though. I'm trying to think of stuff we can do in the here and now.

Compact laspistol, can't go wrong there.

I really like the idea of having a bolt pistol rigged up to our forearm as well, just because.
>>
>>1115531

I've had very good experience with the hecuter.

http://www.40krpgtools.com/armoury/weapon/inquisitors-handbook/hecuter/

Easily available and has full auto. Good synergy with our Heavy damage plasma pistol. Load it with Man-stoppers (+2 Pen) and it drops assholes easily. Of course its a DH weapon so it loses some of its shine compared to RT weapons but we should be able to easily source a master-crafted or compact version of it.

If we want something flashy, theres this:
http://www.40krpgtools.com/armoury/weapon/into-the-storm/assault-gauntlet/
>>
>>1115555
>Easily available and has full auto. Good synergy with our Heavy damage plasma pistol. Load it with Man-stoppers (+2 Pen) and it drops assholes easily.

Yeah, looks like it'd fit the bill nicely for a holdout pistol. Don't suppose it'd have to be compact, but may as well be.
>>
>>1115566

Can be done, compact is just an upgrade applied to a weapon which cost thrones. So basically free.

http://www.40krpgtools.com/armoury/weapon_upgrades/

Use the dropdown lists at the bottom of this table to limit to "Ranged" and "Dark Heresy".

Look at the range of possible fun things to pimp out a solid munitions pistol. Silencer, scopes, selectable ammunition from multiple magazines, etc.
>>
>>1115577
yea, lotta stuff in the RT core rulebook too.

Digital weapon and the venom ring sound like they'd be pretty good stuff to have, it'd fit in with our outfits.

>>1115585

I kinda like the idea of having a compact bolt pistol with the dragonfire shells, or some other pistol with ignus rounds.

Setting fuckers on fire could give us a further advantage in initiative.
>>
>>1115596
well depending how close this is to the 'based' game, I could see fear checks for enemies being a thing
>>
>>1115151
Wow, this pre-crime technology will be insanely usefull to us and insanely profitable to sell to diferent people over the imperium.

These people are serving us.willingly until noe, I say we hold back on the conversion front a lottle to not cause much diaturbance while we have a war to fight with the other 9 systems
>>
>>1115630

Thats fairly true. Hadn't given too much thought to it yet.

The inqusition and the mechanicus will definitely love to take a look at this piece of technology and the tech-wrights that forged this system.
>>
>>1115640

I think it's fairly safe to say they won't be invited for sometime, we can claim to be having some renovations done and send them on their way, I mean who will doubt a house as ancient and powerful as ours like OP said >>1114244 fuck, we can even bring xenos aboard if their bilogy exels in some way that is useful to us
>>
>>1115673
But given that we're so old - if our House starts profiting from this new space our ancient enemies will try and fuck it up for us.

While the Warrant may protect how we run our ship, I don't think it extends to colonial administration. These worlds will have to align to the Imperium norm - or the Ad Mexh or -I- can screw us.
>>
>>1115673

Not here specifically but I expect we might have need to return to Port Iridescence in the future.

We could possibly bring back some units of the technology used in the pre-crime divisions for further analysis by the ordos and our buddies in the admech.
>>
>>1115687

I think that as long as the tithe is in order the rest don't give much of a fuck, I'm worried about introducing the creed to these people because they seem compleately blind to the warp and its temptations, and I would like to keep it that way so we can have more docile subjects.

It's a pure pratical reason, if we can convert key individuals and leave the masses blind that would be ideal, like in any other shadow government
>>
>>1115687
Far as I read up, there is nothing against us installing ourselves as lords of these systems and more, so long as we pay our tithe and keep a lid on heresy.

But, in that case we'll probably want to play things pretty square as far as a RT goes. And yeah, no doubt we'll have old enemies converge on us like flies. Good thing we've got a sizeable follow on force marshaling.

>>1115673

Assuming they don't have spies on our ship right now, it'll be a good long while before they know what's occurred here, and even longer before anyone actually looks into it. Still, we start acting squirrely they'll really want to look into us.

>>1115700
>I'm worried about introducing the creed to these people because they seem compleately blind to the warp and its temptations, and I would like to keep it that way so we can have more docile subjects.

Try that and we'll be dead. If we're going to form our own lil frontier empire, we've got to do things right or a crusade will show up and push our shit in.
>>
>>1115700

The Imperial Cult is probably the best way to innoculate the populace. Theres a reason its lasted this long.

Purge the heretic, beware the psyker and mutant, and abhor the alien. Having the population indoctrinated to this will keep them safe from most predations.
>>
>>1115596
>>1115585
>>1115555
For holdout weapons it's hard to go past a digi-melta. Having the ability to vaporise a vehicle with just the ring on your finger is pretty spectacular.

For style the meritech scatter cannon can be tucked under the arm as a classy gem-studded swagger stick nevertheless fire the equivalent of an anti-tank missile.

But if it's just pure firepower you're after I'd go with triple-wielded stormbolters (one being mind-linnked and shoulder-mounted) loaded with organgrinder rounds. Three high-velocity, double-barrelled machineguns firing rounds that can each just about equal the damage of anti-tank missiles and melta-weapons.
>>
>>1115738
The lack of psychics or warp knowledge makes me weary...

Its not a human strain of pure blanks, or our Navigator / Astropath would have felt it. There may be something underneath the surface.
>>
>>1115767
More likely than not, they probably have a working understanding of psychics and how to make use of them.

Recall what the Minority Report Pre-Crime system was made of. 3 linked psychics.
>>
>>1115738
>>1115715

Agreed, and they already have a lot of things in common with the imperial creed

the colectivism, the focus on the needs of the many and not the few, the unimportance of the individual, the harsh punishment for dissidents.

our only problem is the relation with the xenos but that can be changed.

we could easely change their focus on hard work to a focus on the unity and power of man (represented by the emperor)
this way they would intagrate nicely without changing so much of their current culture, to not create a massive shock. We would save resourses and troops that way.
>>
>>1115738
>>1115863
I guess enslaving Xenos, as they seem to have done or capable of doing might be all right with the Imperial Creed. Systems that are more difficult to reach very typically have increasing divergences from the mainstream.

Of course they must stop treating them as equals/friends very fast. But i guess that is already not really (probably only officially) the case: no nation has ever conquered a nation without displaying some level of xenophobia. We can build up on that.
>>
>>1115941
Maybe we should fake some numbers understating their productivity while having the media constantly portray them as lazy, greedy and childish/in constant need of supervision. The argument for enslavement would be that human protection can not be free.
>>
>>1115955
Don't know m8, they already seem slaveish to me, with all this commy vibe they eradiate.

communist was shit for the commies but it was awesome for stalin, we just have to convince them that the emperor is stalin
>>
>>1115715
>If we're going to form our own lil frontier empire, we've got to do things right or a crusade will show up and push our shit in.
A crusade will happen anyway.
Once the frontier is sufficiently explored and mapped, the Imperium will launch a Crusade to turn the Expanse into a Sector.
We just need to have staked a claim and made the local populations docile enough for their tastes to not get purged.
>>
>>1115599
