Ah, it looks like you’re about to die. The most feared predator of the modern world, the stealthy 18-wheeler, is currently barreling toward you at a speed you’re about to find incredibly painful. It’s looking to claim two more victims, first the pink haired girl in front of you and then you soon after.

And to think a few minutes ago, you were walking down the sidewalk, unsuspecting as ever. The first day of high school starts today for you, and it’s at Tetsuyashi Academy of the Psionic Arts. If the uniform wasn’t enough proof, the emblem on your chest would be. It’s the school for the best and brightest of the North, and it would be a lie to say you weren’t a bit nervous.

Suddenly from your left came a shout, “Watch out!”

You turned just in time to see a ball of fluff—no wait, a puppy—leap into the air, graze your blazer, and run off. A girl in a uniform like yours followed right after, the ribbon on headband flapping in the wind.

She cried out, “Give me back my badge!”

Your hand patted your chest instinctively. Oh. Oh no.

“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” you said.

Scrambling forward, you quickly caught up right in the middle of a street crossing. It was about partway through you realized the light had changed. The sound of the airhorn helped.

A sure fate—if you two weren’t psions.

In a fraction of a second in the corner of your eye, you see her pupils light up an unnatural cyan. Her psi messily moves into action, along with the expression on her face, gives you a nice telltale sign of someone’s who’s about to do something they’re going to regret.

You know from experience.

The Psionics Arts, the induction of phenomena using your mind. Through the psi that runs through your body, you can perform feats that others could only see read about in fantasy stories. Well, if your psi and your mind are on good terms, anyway.

It’s been at least year since you’ve been in a fight, so the only thing you can do just this moment is make a barrier. You pour out all your focus and in an instant, the truck smashes into your psi. Dense—but maybe not enough. You turn to the girl and she yelps as she throws her hands in the air.

She must have not been expecting you to do anything, because with that, the truck is promptly sent flying half a block backwards, careening into a line of parked cars.

“…Oops.”

“The dog!” you shout.

A minute later and the puppy is writing in the girl’s hands.

“Maybe no one will recognize us…” she says under heavy breathing, “Hey, don’t you go to Tetsuyashi?”

“What gave it away?” you jest, “I’m Katsuya Nekoyo, nice to meet you.”

“Yuu Saki,” she says, struggling with the ball of fluff, “Mind getting the… uh, badge things?”

You reach forward, and when you pull back, you find your hand covered in slobber and full of emblems.

“This one yours?” you say, tossing the one with the initials “Y.S”.

“Huh? There’s more?”

Picking yours out, you lift the rest up to reveal four other ones, all equally glimmering in drool.

“What are we going to do?” she asks.

She looks at you expectantly.

“We should head to the academy first, or we’ll miss the entrance ceremony.”

“Hmm, doesn’t this mean at least four others can’t get in?”

“We’ll leave it to the faculty,” you say, “You aren’t suggesting we look for them ourselves, are you?”

“Uh… nevermind.”

A moment later and you see it. The gates of the academy stand firmly with the name of the school engraved on a steel plate. Placed adjacent is a huge poster with the words “Entrance Ceremony” and a big arrow.

You say, “You know, I don’t think we can bring this guy inside.”

“There’s someone right there!” she points.

Someone is standing a few paces past the gate, an armband with the label of “Student Council.” You watch as he redirects a few new students inside. The color of his tie is a shade lighter than yours—he’s a year older.

You walk up to him. “Hey—“

“AAHH! So you’re the criminals!”

“What?” says the girl next to you.

“A missing dog, theft of multiple emblems, I’ve had so many reports this morning!” he shouts at you, “You’re coming with me, right now!”

Saki looks as confused as you.

“This must be a misunderstanding, we’re the victims here!”

“What are you talking about, it’s clear as day!” he shouts.

“Are you empty in the hea—“ Saki says.

“Look at this!” you interrupt, matching his decibel level, “Mine’s covered in slobber, and so’s hers!” Underneath your breath you add, “The school day hasn’t even started and I’ve already had to deal with this annoying dog and a truck.”

“A truck?”

“Huh?” you feign, “Anyway, we grabbed the dog after it took our badges, and we didn’t have time to deal with it. So we’re here, looking for help.”

The entire time, the upperclassman had been nodding his head steadily along.

“Yeah, that kinda make sense. Uh. Okay. I guess you’re free to go, leave with me the dog and emblems though,” he says, “And uh, if you need anything, ask for a Rin, that’s me.”

Saki shoots you a look, something that reads like, What the hell! He’s so easy to win over, how is he trusted with anything?!

And you shoot one back, Shut up, don’t you ruin this.

“Well if we run, we can make it to the ceremony. Probably, before it ends at least.”

“I’m not going,” Yuu says.

“What?”

“The ceremony’s always a boring bunch of old people lecturing us anyways. I’m interested in this.”

“Nice, you want to help return the badges?” Rin asks.

“No, who cares about that? I wanna know who the puppy belongs to.”

“O-oh.”

Rin slumps a little.
>”Well, good luck with that. I’ve got the elderly to listen to.”

“There’s classes. Leave it for after school.”

“It’s fine, there’s only mock exams.”

“Saki, you haven’t heard?”

“Yuu. And heard what?”

“The practical exam is for calibration.”

“…Here you go Rin, don’t let go the puppy, he’s slippery.”

Turning on her heel, Yuu marches on by your side. Putting this business on the backburner for now, you cross through a doorway, you feel psi run through your body, checking for your badge. There’s a light ding, and you go on through, the girl following soon after.

So this is it.

Hell on earth.

You didn’t think it’s possible, but the principal did it: a soft, droning, sleeping-aid voice, paired with the perfectly timed coughs in the microphone, makes every ear-rupturing second inexplicably agonizing.

“I should’ve listened…”

“Oh look, we’re in the same class,” you star at your assignment sheet.

“It was a coin flip, there’s not enough students to fill even three classes…”

Class is broken down into two parts. Theoretical and practical. As one might have guessed, the former is the old textbook cramming and the latter is the actual application of the arts. For the first day, it’s all mock exams to see how well you’ve been keeping up after the long expanse of summer. Seeing as you just barely got by on the theoretical, your chances of being number one is about… 0.01%.

Walking into the classroom, you spot a friendly face.

“Hey, Sorai! You got here pretty fast.”

“Katsuya, been a while, man,” he looks at you, then does a double take at Yuu, “Whoa, how do you know Saki?”

“It’s a long story. You know her?”

“Yeah, she got the top score in the entrance exams. Anyways, you should take a seat.”

Her? You find it hard to believe.

You grab a seat in the front. Because you’re a hard worker. Window side, as a compromise.

Absolutely unshakable, your confidence. Never again will you go through the exams ranking in the bottom 10 ever again! Things will be different, surely.

As you drop down and lower your bag, Sorai takes the seat behind you and Yuu behind him.

You think, What?! The top student doesn’t sit in the front?

“I’m Sorai, you gonna score number one again?”

“Of course, who do you think I am?” she says.

Her expression is of infallible confidence, which is a whole lot different than about an hour ago. You tilt your head and notice the girl hiding her phone behind Sorai’s back.

Are you kidding me?

All of sudden an adult in a tracksuit bursts through the door, “Alright everyone shut your mouths. Ms. Masu isn’t here right now, who’s your homeroom teacher if you didn’t bother reading the damn paper. I’ll be proctoring your mock exam, and no funny business alright?” There’s a few whispers, then he shouts, “I mean it! I got magic sensors all over this room, so don’t even think about it.”

You gulp.

No cheating. Ah, that should probably be a given, seeing as how you’re in the front row. That would take quite the set to pull off. Maybe Sorai can do it.

The proctor passes you a test sheet as he goes down the rows and—

What the hell is this!?

Gravitational constant, the natural frequency of psi, trigonometric identities, how are you supposed to know all this?

You gulp, and dive in.

You leave the classroom, feeling uneasy. Not exactly a dead man, but there were a whole lot you left blank, and at least half you guessed on. You would later find out you got 40/100, to your dismay.

The bell rings, and everyone sort of breaks off. There’s a satisfied look on Sorai’s face, while Yuu looks worried—it feels completely flipped.

“Sorai, how di-“

He lifts up his pencil and you can see his psi lightly carved onto the graphite inside. “Easy.”

“Are you kidding me…” you shake your head, “Yuu, you looked like you bombed it.”

“Huh? No, I’m uh, worried about the puppy.”

“...Figures.”

“We can check in with Rin really quick, if you want.”

“Mm, okay.”

Sorai says, “I don’t what you two are up to, but good luck. I’m checking out cafeteria.”

“Later”

Third floor of the Theoreticals building is where you two arrive after some twists and turns later. A set of double doors lie before you, with Student Council Room on a plate to the side.

“I think this is it,” you say.

You pull outward, and dragging by the handle of a door is a girl with strange hair. She makes some sort of sound that’s halfway between a shout and crying and falls forward, pushing you down with her.

You hit the floor and groan. Wait, what’s this feeling? It’s soft…!

Soft and fluffy. Like a ball of fur. And it barks.

“Ah, sorry, sorry! I should’ve looked at where I was going.”

“Hey, that’s the…” Yuu trails off, “Our badges…”

The suspicious girl whom gets up and pats some dust off.

Then she looks at your emblems.

Then she picks up the puppy and bolts away.

“I’m sorry, please forgive me! I’m sorry, please forgive me!”

You turn and burst into a sprint down the hallway after her.

“W-why are you chasing me!?”

“Why are you running away? Give me some answers, damnit! That dog almost got me killed!”

Just as you finished that sentence, the girl turns a corner, and promptly trips over a trashcan. She hops on one foot for a bit, then falls straight on her face.

“Are… you okay?” you ask.

“Ooh, nice job. You got her good,” Yuu says, leisurely walking up to you.

“That wasn’t me, alright?”

The strange haired girl whimpers, her face still firmly on the floor. “I lost my badge… And I tried to get Zach to fetch it…”

“Zach?” you ask.

The dog barks.

“Oh.”

“Are you happy? Can you let me go now!?” she says, lifting her face and turning to you. A bit of red trickles down her hand as she tries to cover her nose.

Yuu says to you, “We should probably run away, this is just like the truck thing.”

You shake your head, and instead extend your hand out to the girl sitting on the floor. “Sorry, shouldn’t have chased you. Come on, let’s get you to the nurse… uh…”

She sniffles, or attempts to. “Kururi. My name Kururi.”

You hear Yuu mutter something, “Oh, so you care when it’s a cute girl?”

“I wasn’t the one who blew him away!” you hiss.

As you introduce yourself, you feel a pair of eyes staring daggers into your back. It strikes you as strange, since Yuu’s standing right beside.

You stand right outside the Nurse’s office.

“Usagi,” you throw out to Saki.

“Yeah?”

She didn’t notice…

You continue, “I feel like we’re forgetting something.”

“If you forgot it, it can’t be important, right?”

“…Right.”

The sound of footsteps turns your attention away. It’s Kururi, walking out with a bandage over her nose and holding a cotton ball underneath.

“Are you okay?” Usagi asks. Yeah, you’re keeping that nickname mentally.

“Gni’m okay.” Swollen nose.

“You sure you don’t want to stay here?” you ask.

“Nnno, gnI gan’t, nI’ll mbiss the nexam,” she replies.

“If we run, we can make it. Let’s go!”

“The first day at Tetsuyashi and I’m already a failure,” Usagi sullenly mutters, “I wasn’t expecting it to happen so soon…” Then she turns her head at you. “Wait, I can use my magic! I can—“

“No, I’m not ending up like that truck,” you say, already moving.

“Ooh, jeez, why are you making this so hard?!”

“Wnait for gme!”

The sun beats down on you as your shoes slam down on the grass. Cutting straight through the huge area between the two main structures, you pant heavily as you hear the two behind you follow along. That videogame marathon during the last few weeks of summer vacation was a bad idea. Such a bad idea.

Somewhere along the way, Kururi had lost track of the puppy. Again. Time seems to stretch on forever as you make your way through the front door, then the stairs, then—

“You’re late.” It’s the teacher from before. In the tracksuit.

“We’re sorry,” you pant. In-between heaves you attempt to explain the excursion to the nurse’s office.

“Two whole minutes, unbelievable! Learn some discipline, and sit down!”

You stagger onward along, turning away as you make a face of confusion and incredulity. Bracing yourself on your knees, you ignore the couple of stares that are being thrown your way. One of students is particularly… affixed.

You stand in the lobby of the sparring chambers, a small crowd of about 30, 35—give or take—waiting patiently as the teacher walks up. Sorai’s in the middle of it, and he glances at you.

“The name’s Heitanyama, but you can call me whatever. Listen, you’re gonna go two at a time. My assistants here will do the testing. Any volunteers? They’ll explain the rules for you.”

There’s some murmurs.

You better just sit back for now, you need to catch your breath.

You knock your chest twice in attempts to not sound like a dying animal, and then stand back up straight as a few people volunteer to go first.

“Hitsujiii~”, one of the girls says—the one with the pigtails, “I’ll take both on at the same time, you go do the checkup.”

“…Are you sure…?” the other girl replies in a hush tone. Almost so that you couldn’t hear it.

“I’ll feel bad for beating them up so bad anyways,” she says, “HEY! I’m Rori Shiba, and you better remember it! You two freshmen punks, your names?”

As she stomps her way into a chamber, the two teens behind her laugh as they answer.

“There’s no way I’m losing to a little girl,” one of them jokes.

Right before the chamber door closes you see for a second the girl turning her head back just a bit. Just enough for you to catch the death glare and snarl that’s on her face.

The teacher boisterously laughs, then says, “I’ll be watching in the observation rooms. You all don’t get to watch, it wouldn’t be fair.”

Kururi lightly tugs on you and Usagi’s uniforms. “GnI made a tderrible mistdake. GnI should’ve stdayed behind.”

“…What?”
“Why?”

“GnI’m not feeling tdoo well, or at lneast aenough to gnet beaten up.”

“You’ll be fine. I believe in you,” Usagi says, giving her a thumbs up. You toss in one as well.

His assistant is left alone. “…Alright… please line up.”

Soon enough, it’s your turn. You read the nametag on her: “Hitsujikaze Yukikata.”

“Name?” she asks.

“Katsuya Nekoyo.”

She flips through a few pages. Then she stops.

“…Your career goals…”

“…NEET?” she asks.

Oh right. You wrote that. “Not in employment, education, or trai-“

“I know what it means… but… why?”

“The Nagareboshi,” you say, “Of course.”

Suddenly behind you, Yuu bursts out laughing. “Gahahha, this confidence!”

“Shut it, Usagi.”

“Ahahheh… what?”

Ignoring her, you turn around and see Yukikata lifting a device away from you. “There we go… we’re don-“

A scream from the sparring chamber cuts her off. Screams, actually.

“…We’re done,” she says, “Next.”

You decide to ignore that too, but you can’t ignore the chamber door slamming open and two people being thrown out. They skid along the floor, mumbling apologies as if they were possessed. The assistant from before—Rori Shiba was it?—steps out.

“You,” she points to you, “and you,” and then to the girl next to you who did her checkup right before yours. The one that was staring at you for an awfully long time for being late. “You’re the closest, come on.”

“Ah, let’s work together to not die, yeah?” you look at your comrade-in-arms.

She nods overly enthusiastically. Yes, truly by staring at the face of death, any two people can come together to form a bond. Sharing a mutual fate, such as being violently hazed by an upperclassman who’s a head shorter than you, what a tragedy.

You hear Sorai, Yuu, and Kururi wish you two good luck as the chamber door closes behind.

“Hey, got any preferences for location?” Shiba asks.

Do you?

Yeah, what about your— You stop your thought before it even finished.

“Spin the wheel, surprise me.”

“Alright. Names!” she calls out.

“Katsuya Nekoyo.”

Your partner doesn’t answer. You look at her and see she’s looking at you way too expectantly.

“What’s your name!?” Shiba asks.

You attempt to motion for her to go, and she gulps and affirms her resolve. Ah, that expression, oh boy.

She takes a stride forward and sweeps her hair. “You dare ask for my name!? I am the Empress of Dragons, the Devourer of Worlds, the Beholder of the Infinite Darkness, Yamikigo Kyougetsu!”

You look away in embarrassment as Shiba stares blankly.

“Okay. Touch your badge to start the match!”

Reluctantly, you palm the little piece of metal, and the world around you begins to distort. Thinking to the truck incident earlier today, you acknowledge the fact that there was nothing more that you can do.

After all, your specialty was psionic analysis, and the only thing you could do after a year of slacking off was… make a barrier. And that was only thanks to your big sister.

Quickly, you turn to Yamikigo, “What can you do?”

“Me? Are you question my divine pow—“

“Come on.”

“Sorry. I can do this!” she says, as black mist flows from the ground upward, “I can use it for travel, but I have to hold my breath.”

“We’re screwed.”

“Ehn?!”

The chamber adds the finishing touches, the last chair to the stadium.

“The arena for the Nagareboshi,” you say, breathless.

It’s nighttime, the only time that the event can be held. Only in your wildest dreams could you have thought of standing in the center of it. Not in the crowd cheering, not at home watching, but part of it. The stars in the night sky, the cool wind that blows at your back, the vast rows and rows of empty seats. From the other side of the stadium, Shiba walks out.

“I couldn’t help but overhear,” she says, grinning, “If you want to make it here, then, at the very least, you have to get through me. The winner is whoever grabs the enemy’s badge. Easy.”

The horn blares, signaling you two to go.
Maybe you can come up with a winning plan.

“What’s the plan?!” she asks.

“We go up…”

“Yeah?”

“…grab her emblem and rip it off,” you say, “Element of surprise.”

“…What? Why don’t you just teleport and grab it?” she asks her expression turns from confidence to worry.

You freeze in place. Teleport? When could you ever teleport? You wish you had something that usefu—

Middle school. First year. Local magic show festival. That kid with the soot black hair.

From across the stadium Shiba shouts, “Are we going to do this, or are you two going to talk all day?”

“It’s complicated,” you tell Yamikigo. That wasn’t a lie. “You said you can travel with the mist or something, right? I’ll distract her, let’s go!”

You break into a sprint, and so does your partner. Her unease is plain on her face. She lags behind you slightly. Your fists clench as you rush forward. Only the top five of each nation gets invited to the Nagareboshi, and just losing this match would set you back. Even if you have a year…

Shaking your head free of these thoughts, you scatter your psi forward into a field. Then, you throw up your barrier. Dull, unrefined, inefficient, completely unlike your sis’s. Good enough. You close in by the second, stride by stride, until—

“Is this it?” Shiba asks. The earth below you pulsates, throwing you into the air. You feel her psi ripple through. You only could glance up before the air swells and blasts you back. Your barrier is partially shredded, failing to cover everything in the first place. Crashing into the dirt, you quickly roll and pick yourself back up.

17/250 - Rori Shiba (???)

Suddenly from behind Shiba, a swirling torrent of black smoke rises.

Is that…?

67/250 - Yamikigo Kyougetsu (???)

It is. She comes crashing down and stops an arm’s length away from the emblem, the distortion in the air rippling through. Your partner’s face comes out, gasping for breath as the rest of her body materializes. There’s another pulse, and she’s knocked out of the way.

58/250 - Rori Shiba (???)

It’s probably directional, the areas affected being wherever her psi travels. You look at Yamikigo, who meets your eyes as she pushes herself off the ground. It doesn’t look like she can take much more. You nod slightly, and so does she. At the same time, you two burst towards Shiba in a pincer attack, attacking both sides at the same time. As soon as you see her even twitch, you make another barrier. Your partner takes a deep breath and enshrouds herself in smoke.

84/250 Yamikigo (???)

Shiba takes one look, and she runs. You slam your foot on the ground and change directions, hoping to intercept. However as the seconds pass, it becomes less and less like a pincer attack. You grit your teeth as you lunge forward.

Shiba suddenly jumps and twists around. Staring at you dead in the eyes, you watch as her psi rumbles into motion.

One whole second elapses.

Your whole world explodes in a flash. You vaguely feel crashing into the ground and groaning as you pick yourself up. All you see are stars.

118/250 Shiba (???)

When you shake your head clear and glance up, you catch Yamikigo crashing into Shiba, who’s holding her hand over her emblem. You curse as the tiny girl throws your partner off with another explosion, this time in your direction.

187/250 Shiba (???)

You reach out and catch Yamikigo as she falls onto you. A foot slides back and you can feel your body aching, but you ease her back standing.

“It’s no good, she can see us coming,” you say.

One look at your partner and you can see she’s going to be out of the race in one more hit.

“I… I have a plan,” she says, “I need you to distract her... really this time…”

“Okay. I trust you.”

She looks at you in shock, as if she didn’t expect you to actually say that. Then her lips form a small smile, her eyes avoiding yours. “Thank you…”

You let go of her arm as she steadies herself, and then you two split off. While you make distance again, you try to put up a barrier for her. It’s been a far too long since your big sis had taught you, but you do remember a bit. A single strand of psi, connecting you to her, slowly forming it around her. Not only would you have to concentrate maintaining some strength and shape to it but also not breaking the connection that holds it together.

But if this could keep her safe, then it’s nothing. You can deal with it.

You turn to Shiba, who’s looking at you anxiously.

“Hey!” you call, “Did you get lost on your way to middle school?”

“Huh?”

“Mark my words, there’s no way I’ll lose to a little girl.”

Snarling, she replies, “You… little…!”

Shiba goes from a walk, to a jog, to full sprint as she guns toward you. So this is what happened to those two who entered first. You can’t see Yamikigo anywhere, but right behind her is a blotch of smoke.

You take a step back and attempt to put up a barrier, making it two but before you can, the earth pulsates again. You manage to land on your feet in a second, but Shiba’s already closed the gap.

“No more playing around,” she says, grabbing your emblem and tie.

Then, an arm reaches out from Shiba, from the mist. And another, from another cloud.

“Hellish Portal of Infinite Darkness!”

Shiba’s eyes widen, and her entire body is dragged backwards. The air explodes around the wisps of smoke, smashing the barrier you made as it absorbs most of the impact. You on the other hand, take the full recoil, being thrown back once again. You eat dirt once more, this time unable to get up. Your ears ring, your tie is loose, and your emblem… is missing.

279/250 Rori Shiba (Perfect Pitch 1)

It’s been one long day, but it’s not over yet.

“I did it! I did it Katsuya, I did it!” she says, running over to you as you try to get up.

As just as you do, she flies into you, sending you right back down.

“Ow.”

“Did you see that? The plan worked, I grabbed her emblem! It was kinda my ace in my sleeve, but… I don’t mind revealing it here.”

“Yeah, I did. Good job, Yamikigo,” you say, instinctively giving her a headpat.

She pulls back all of a sudden, “O-of course! It’s no big deal for the Dark Dragon Empress!”

You try to get up once again. When you bring your head back up, you see Shiba looking at you.

You say, “Sorry about that, I didn’t mean what I said.”

“I can’t believe I fell for that,” she huffs, offering her hand to you and Yamikigo.

The horn blows again, signaling the end of the match.

Less than a minute later you manage to stagger out of the chamber door.

Soirai asks, “How was it?”

Usagi also adds, “How badly did you get beat?”

“We won. Well, she did,” you say, pointing to Yamikigo.

“Eheheh,” Yamikigo laughs embarrassed.

“Wow,” Usagi replies, lightly clapping, “Good job.”

You can’t tell if it’s sarcasm or not. You’re also not sure if you losing your emblem counted for anything, or that 2v1 would make this seem even worse, but you’re satisfied, for now.

“Nni-in the boy’s dorm?” Kururi stutters.

“Any sort of event in any place where you’ve been would be a mistake,” you say while Yamikigo awkwardly twiddles her fingers.

“I should… I should get going,” she says, parting ways. She isn’t in your class, is she?

The lobby of the practice chambers slowly empties. On the way out, you catch Hitsujikaze on the phone with presumably the teacher, whatshisface.

“There’s a student missing. No…she says her emblem was missing… she called…okay…”

Moments later and you find yourself slipping into the dorms. Nonresidents are denied entry after 10:00PM, but it’s not even close to that. Sorai unlocks the door to his single room, and down falls a letter with a heart sticker sealing it. Swooping it out of midair, he proceeds to cleanly dunk it in the trashcan in a smooth motion.

“Aren’t you going to read that?”

“No. You shouldn’t either.”

“Wasn’t thinking of it.”

As the door slowly creaks shut, you wish Sorai would at least pick up his clothes.

It wasn’t a dream, it was a nightmare.

It was about three years ago in middle school. Currently, you believe someone’s about to die.

“Holy shit, Sorai, no—“

“I got this, my man. Gotta trust me.”

“You really don’t have to do this, it’s not your problem.”

“If they messed with you, then they messed with me too.”

He calls it the Clipper. Like clipping a bird of its wings. A jerry-rigged psi gun that he stole from the gym equipment storage.

“Please!” you say out of fear. Fear of getting scolded.

“Here they come,” Sorai says with bated breath.

A boy a year older than you two walks through the door with his two friends, the cocky smile on his face the same as last week’s as he made you eat pavement. Serving as the signal, Sorai swings forwards and jams the gun into the boy’s chest.

“Huh? What are you—“

Fires, an immensely, burning, bright light behind him, scorching the two behind him.

100/250 (???)

The boy’s psi ruptures, spilling everywhere in an explosion of energy.

200/250 (???)

“Stop it!” you shout.

The gun loops back in the energy and sends it back. Like giving a swinging pendulum a slight nudge forward every time it goes forward. Like pushing it until it crashes against the walls.

250/250 Psi Blast recorded.

Sorai drops the gun, staggering about. His arms are burnt as much as the boy’s two friends, but the target of the attack had it much worse.

The dorm rooms here are loaded, like what you might expect from a standard apartment. That doesn’t stop Sorai from absolutely destroying everything from sheer neglect. See: the fridge in the kitchen. By some sheer luck, he had managed unplug it from the wall and found it was too hard to move the thing and plug it back in. There is also milk in there. Was milk. You don’t know what this sludge is now. Ah, so this is punishment for not walking back.

You put on your blazer, spraying it with deodorant until you can no longer smell the dirt, sweat, and blood(?!) that was on it. With a soft kick, you nudge Sorai awake.

“Breakfast?”

“Cafeteria.”

“Are you aware that there’s milk in your fridge?”

Sorai mumbles and pulls the sheets over his head. Out of the corner of your eye you see the trashcan, and you find yourself inexplicably drawn to it. Maybe…

You crouch to find that the garbage can is exclusively filled with soda cans and love letters. The one from last night is a different color, a bit transparent, and has scribbles on top, making it distinct from the rest.

“Yo, some crazy chick told me to give this to you.”

You tilt it just a little, and then you instantly put it back down when you recognized the handwriting.

For the record, you did not just look at the letter and have no idea what that was about. As you walk out and door shuts electronically behind you, you hope that the other letters were from normal, regular people. Thankfully, you didn’t decide to live in the dorms.

As you walk out the building, a sudden realization strikes you.

She didn’t make it in, did she? I didn’t see her in Practicals yesterday.

Cutting through your thoughts like a Moses parting a sea of urine and blood, the growling of your stomach snaps you back to reality. All you had last night was a lukewarm can of Cola, which when you drank it you regretted your decision instantly.

A brisk walk later you find yourself in the school cafeteria. 24/7 buffet, oh the joys of money. You see Usagi happily on her phone on one end of the room, and Yamikigo on the other.

You make your way through the selection slowly, unable to decide what to stuff your face with. Ah so much to choose from, you can even go ahead and ruin your body by devouring tubs of ice-cream at 7 in the morning. Then someone working behind the counter catches your attention.

A minute later and you set your noodles down across the small table that Yamikigo’s at. She jumps a little, startled. Frozen like a deer in headlights. You sit down as she tries to look for something to say.

“W-what a fine day this is, isn’t it, Katsuya? I can tell by hell’s fortune that today’s gonna be a great one!”

“Morning, Yamikigo. How are you feeling?” you say. She reminds you of someone, but you can’t place your tongue on it. You bring a chopstick up—and you can’t stop. They say hunger is the greatest spice, but you can’t tell. Instead, you are currently shoveling as much as you can in your mouth hole.

“W-with the gift of I-infinite Darkness, my wounds have h-healed fast as if I was cleansed in hellfire! My fellow a-archdemon Kururi was kind enough spirit to offer me b-bandages,” she says. Then she looks up at you, and she tries to stifle her laughter, “You look like you’ve gotten better.”

You break away from your trace, partially horrified at what overcame you.

“Ah, sorry, that was rude,” you say, “Been a while since I ate.”

Yamikigo looks at you nervously, and then contemplates as she bites into a piece of chicken. You can see as she opens her mouth to say something and stopping.

A minute passes in silence before you decide to say something—only you’re interrupted by a hand on your shoulder.

A very heavy, angry hand that belongs to Rin.

“The dog did it.”

“A dog knocked a truck down the street?”

“…Let me finish this first. I haven’t eaten in a day.”

Rin crosses his arms, “Okay, but don’t you dare try running away from me.”

“Wouldn’t dream of it.”

As the student council member audibly drags Usagi out, Yamikigo stares at you. “You knocked a truck down the street?”

“It’s… It’s a long story, I’ll tell it to you later. It was either that or get run over.”

“Oh... Wait, you used magic outside the academy?!”

“Y-yeah,” you say, almost choking. No use of magic outside of designated zones. Guess that’s another tick on the checklist. You had forgotten that was a rule, seeing as how impractical it is for everyday life. All the barriers in the world can’t help you ace a test. “Since we’re talking about magic, were you a part of the local Magic Show? The one for middle schoolers.”

She softly bites her lip and looks away, “I wanted to join… but I couldn’t. All I could do was watch…”

You knew it. Still, as you finish the last drop of your noodles, you can’t help but feel like you touched on something you shouldn’t have.

“Well, I can’t keep him waiting. Let’s have breakfast again sometime,” you say, lightly smiling.

Yamikigo looks up, seemingly surprised. “Okay!”

You put the tray in the conveyor belt and walk outside, thoughts running through your head.

“How is this fair!?” Usagi cries.

“You’re the one at fault here, you shouldn’t have crossed the red light.”

“It was a mistake! Are you telling me I should’ve paid for it with my life?!”

“No, which is why I’m saving you two from expulsion,” Rin finishes.

You look at him. “But there’s a catch.”

“Of course.”

”Take your pick.”

“Night patrol.”

“Then I’ll take that too,” Usagi says. You look at her, and she meets your eyes. She blinks, and then turns away.

“Great! I’ll rely on you two for the week. Oh, and also, here,” Rin adds. He holds out his hand to you two, and Usagi takes something from him.

She asks, “An emblem?”

“Remember how you two found four of them? As it turns out, three came to the academy anyway and I found them. The fourth one… I haven’t been too lucky.”

“So you want us to keep an eye out?”

“Yup! I have classes in the day anyways, I’ll be leaving it in your hands. Good luck!”

As he waves goodbye, all you can think about is that Rin’s angry expression was too cheery to be scary.

“It says “K.E” on the back.”

“…”

Hahaha no, Katsuya. That’s just a coincidence.

Practicals.

Magic sets.

You don’t know how it’s possible, but it’s even more boring than the Theoreticals. Well, standing there dully as you completely ace the precision segment firing of a psi gun. They’re easy on you since the semester’s only begun, but compared to yesterday, you think you might fall asleep. Standing up.

Your body’s still sore from yesterday. You twist around your shoulder and neck, trying to wring out the knots. As you continue, bored out of your mind, you overhear a conversation between Mr. Heitanyama and Hitsujikaze.

“Shiba’s gone today again?”

“Yes… she has work…”

“God damnit, I need another assistant to help me out. Shiba’s too unreliable.”

“Sir… are you going to fire her?”

“No, why would I do that?” he laughs, “I don’t pay her.”

“…”

You feel a tug on your uniform. It’s Kururi.

“Oh hey, how’s your nose?”

“I think I’m going to be okay,” she says. The softness of her voice somehow makes it past the sound of psi guns being fired. “I… um… I need… help. Can we… Can we go into a chamber?”

They’re allowed as long as whatever you’re doing inside pertains to the lesson of the day. Which is projection of psi using a device.

Her face grows redder by the moment. You think about pointing out her boldness, but then think against it. Instead, you just grow more confused.

“Sure, what is it?” you say as you walk to one of the empty rooms. Anything would be less boring than standing there.

“I-I talked to Sorai and…um… he told me to go to you,” Kururi says, closing the door behind her and sealing it.

“You… remember the rules, right? There are cameras here to record the matches.”

“Of course, of course! The project of p-psi, right? That’s why… that’s why…!” she says, tugging her ribbon loose.

“W-WHOA, did you not hear me?!” you try to stop her, “Are you one of those kinds of people that like being recorded?!”

“H-huh?” she looks at you, straightening out the piece of fluffy cloth.

“Wait…” you say, your face hot as fire, “What did you need help with again?”

“Psi projection…” she answers. The ribbon straightens out instantly as she pumps psi into it, acting like a shortsword. Her hand trembles as she punches in a few buttons on the chamber panel, and the room is magic-proofed.

You let your shoulders slack as your whole body untenses, “Why are you embarrassed?”

“Y-you’re looking at my psi, my psi! W-why else would I be embarrassed!?” she whisper-shouts at you, “You’re like this too, right? You’re all red!”

She looks at you expectantly.

”S-shut up, this is something else completely unrelated!” you say, “Are we going to do this or what?”

“Right. Sorai said we had to fight? If you will, please!”

That guy, giving away your secrets already! Well, it wasn’t like you could keep it hidden forever.

“We don’t,” you shake your head, “Just hold onto the ribbon.”

She nods as you walk over and touch it, your psi reaching forward in direct contact.

You feel it. The frequency of her psi, the bumps and dents, the distortion that ripples through every time she takes a breath. The mistakes, the scars, the parts that remain untouched. The differences that dictate what you can and can’t do. One of a kind, like a fingerprint, and hidden away for no one to see but for yourself.

Psi Signature recorded.
Psi Blast is available for every recorded signature.

You open your eyes and find Kururi staring intently at you. You feel like you know everything about her, yet there’s so much you don’t.

And so, for the rest of Practicals, you helped her turn her ribbon into a Gatling gun.

You’ll take it easy.

And Rin doesn’t seem to disagree. All he gave as a briefing as he ran out of the Student Council room in distress was check out anything suspicious. So now you stand in the dark at 10:00PM, waiting for Usagi who said she would come right back.

About ten minutes pass before you consider just leaving her on the spot. You wonder what the hell she’s doing, but then the sound of shuffling catches your attention. You turn around, and you see nothing. Just shrubbery. You anxiously stare off for a few moments before looking away. Your nerves are getting the best of you.

The shuffling turns into loud rustling, and then you feel two hands slam down on your shoulders from behind.

“AHHHH!”

You cry out, “AHHH!” You fall forward while trying to face your attacker, ending with your backside hitting the ground. A large bundle of green looms before you. It puts a hand near what looks like its mouth and pulls down.

“Gotcha!” Usagi laughs.

“Fuck!” you say, “What are you wearing? Why do you have something like this?”

“It’s a ghillie suit, and obviously for times like these,” she replies, “I got you good, didn’t I?”

“We’re doing night patrols, not going hunting or sniping.”

She shakes her head in disapproval, “In this day and age, that’s the same thing.”

“We’re not even in a forest,” you say, getting up.

“There’s grass and trees everywhere, it’s the same thing,” Yuu says, “The real question is why don’t you have one?”

Ignoring that last part, you ask, “Was this why you picked night patrol?”

“Was what why?”

“Nevermind. I’ll go this way, see you in—“

She grabs your arm with surprising strength, “No. We’re not splitting up.”

It’s too late for this.

“Why don’t you go hide in a bush or something?”

“I can’t,” she says, putting her hand to her chest, “That’ll mean leaving you alone in the dark. What if some lunatic attacks you? Someone needs to watch your back. At all times.” She holding the appearance of unshakable resolve. Her hand lets go of the suit and it snaps back up, hiding everything except her eyes.

“Let’s just… let’s just go,” you say, “Why don’t we check out the cafeteria first?”

“Exactly what I was thinking,” she says, adding a bunch of hmmfs.

You cross the courtyard and head to the building where the sweet, sweet bounties of—you mean, to where suspicious activity might occur. Access is shut of promptly at 10:00PM, which was just a while ago.

You stand right outside, only the light sound of cicadas fill the air.

Nothing.

“Alright, I guess we should go,” you say. You take a step away, and the sound of a ding stops you. You slowly turn around to see the bundle of greenery holding the door open.

“Rin allowed us access, remember? Do your job properly!”

“…The student council sure is powerful.”

You step through, and the building meets you with a ding.

“Excellent disguise for stealth inside a building,” you say, shooting her a stare.

“Guh,” she flinches, “Just you watch.”

You walk inside, the sight of nigh complete darkness greeting you. Usagi peeks around the corner, and then the other, and then steps in. She flips a switch, lighting the whole room of the main dining hall and completely standing out.

The first thing you notice is that the shutters are completely closed and all the machines are locked down. A small part of you feels disappointment.

“I don’t think we can check the back,” Usagi tells you.

“That’s fine, I think I can reach it from here.”

“Ehn?”

You close your eyes and disperse your psi forward into a field, spilling forth like a wave. Ignoring some security sensors, you pass through it all and find not a single living human being in floor.

“It’s clear.”

“What did you just do?”

“Magic. Come on, let’s get out of here,” you say, shutting off the lights.

Your phone rings in your pocket, almost making you jump. Lifting it up and out, you see it’s from an unknown number. Reluctantly, you answer it. You hold it up to your ear and… hear nothing.

“Hello?” you prod.

“…Ah…Ahh…! Ahhh!!” Then the other end disconnects.

Usagi asks, “An ad?”

“I...” you shake your head, “Yeah?”

You put your phone in your pocket and then it rings again.

“What the,” you say.

As you pull it out again it stops.

“Alright, I’m blocking whoever this is,” you say, walking outside. The scent of flowers reaches your nose.

It rings one last time as you walk outside just as you press the last button.

“…Huh?” Your head becomes unbelievably light, making you fall backwards.

“Hey!” Usagi cries out, catching you before you hit the ground, “What’s wrong with you?”

“Sorry, I just… do you smell that?”

“Smell what? My suit sort of blocks everything out.”

You groan as you get back on your feet. You try to send out your psi and… nothing happens.

What?

You try again, and there’s a spark as you do so. The world bends and wobbles, your balance thrown off as you close your eyes. Empty. Nothing in front nothing in behind, only a void.

Your phone rings again. Same number.

“Ah…Ahhhhh…! AhhhhH!! I found you!!”

The ringing stops as the voice cries out. A shadowy figure falls down a fence, dropping into a roll and then turning into a skip. As it walks closer, the light from street lantern reveals her shoes, then her skirt, then her emblem-less blazer, then her face.

Usagi says, “Oh, wait, is this yours?” holding up the emblem from Rin.

Completely ignoring her, the girl does a small spin and clasps her hands together, stopping in a feet front of you. She bends forward and looks up to meet your eyes, “I’m sorry I took so long, Onii-chan!”

“…Ehn?” Usagi asks.

Ah, your shield…!

You put one up as you slowly stagger back. You thought you made a misstep and your foot slides, the ground below you seemingly shifting and bulging.

Your psi activates and you make barrier—except when you blink, you find it’s a good four paces away from where you meant it to be.

You turn and run away, except it’s more like a weird, lazed jog, and you trip over yourself in two steps.

“You’re… not my little sister...!” you mumble, getting up.

“Of course I am! We share blood, don’t we?~ Ahhh, I can still feel you flowing through me!~” she serenades. The girl, no, Kaori, lowers herself to meet your eyes as you push against your knees to stand up. You look away and cover your nose and mouth, attempting to run away again.

“Hey!” Usagi shouts, “What’s your problem?”

You’re a solid yard away from Kaori before she replies, tilting her head away, “Oh, I didn’t notice you, you blended in so well.”

“That’s…” she replies, teetering on the edge between smugness and anxiety.

“Wait. Who are you? Onii-chan alone with another woman at night…”

You lurch and stumble.

Oh no…! You turn around on your heel.

“Stop, it’s not what you think,” you say.

“Hmm? And what did I think?” Kaori answers.

“Wha...” you stop, frantically looking around until your eyes stop at the girl’s blazer, the spot where her badge should be, “Your badge!”

The shrub known as Usagi suddenly moves into action, “R-right! I was looking for whoever this belong to and I ran into your… um, Onii-chan patrolling at night! Yeah, that’s it!” she says, showing the badge again.

Nice save!

“Oh…! Thank you!” Kaori says, taking the emblem and putting it on. “Now if you don’t mind leaving us, me and Onii-chan have a lot to catch up on!~”

“R-right. Have fun!” Usagi says, taking one last glance at you.

You scream through your eyes, unsure to be happy that she’s safe or fury incarnate that she’s leaving you to the buzzards.

As Usagi slinks away, Kaori pulls you close into a whisper. The sweet scent of flowers flows into every pore of your body.

“Why do you keep blocking my numbers?”

“Because you keep acting like this…!” You stumble back, putting a hand up as a last defense at separating her and you. Kaori takes it instead and gently puts it on her chest near her heart.

“I’ve missed you, Katsuya. I can’t help it when I’m lonely.”

“That’s not an excuse to get high on your own supply!”

You try to take a step back again but Kaori grabs your shoulders and presses against you, her arms wrapping around your neck. You feel her hot breath as she leans in and softly touches your lips with hers.

“HYAAA!” a battle cry rises from behind Kaori as she’s jolted backwards by two arms sweeping upwards, sending her into an armlock, “Do something, Katsuya!!” Usagi cries.

You look on disoriented for a moment.

“Jeez…” you sigh.

You lean forward, lightly tapping your forehead against Kaori’s. She turns away from trying to break free to gazing into your eyes.

Focus, Katsuya! you tell yourself.

Don’t hurt them. Dial it back. You can’t get your psi to listen to you properly, not right now. The world spins as you focus all you have.

Dial it back. The effects wear off in three hours.

Dial it back. Three hours.

“Psi Blast,” you whisper.

There’s a shroud of light, and then all three of you drop onto the ground in a deep sleep.
