You are HOLLY, a Titan Pilot for the Frontier Militia!

Currently, you were sitting in the cockpit of your new Titan, BLL-0079, or more colloquially, BLL. You were all geared up and ready to go, and you had established your neural link with BLL, but something felt a bit... off.

In particular, the controls felt a little more sluggish than usual in the sims, and you noticed that some of the Titan's functions appeared to be offline.

"THE REASON IT'S LIKE THIS IS BECAUSE OUR COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS IS STILL ONLY 50%." BLL explains somewhat helpfully. "IN OTHER WORDS, COMPLETE SHIT."

"Gee, you don't mince words, huh?" You roll your eyes.

"AS LONG AS YOU DON'T GET US KILLED, WE SHOULD BE FINE. WELL, YOU SHOULD BE FINE. I'M MORE DURABLE THAN YOU."

"Thanks... I guess?" You frown.

"Quit the chatter." Tarin's voice fills your headset. "Even though Demeter's toast, this is still considered IMC space, so the Vengeance is only going to stop long enough to drop us off before bugging out."

"What's our objective?" Ramirez asks.

"Our scout drones picked up what looks to be a derelict IMC ship that doesn't match our records. We're going to drop in and check it out." Tarin explains. "We're not taking any chances, so we're going down with our Titans on this one."

"AND I'M SURE NOTHING WILL GO HORRIBLY WRONG." BLL muses.

"I'll help out with the search!" You volunteer.

"I suppose." Tarin agrees. "Ramirez, you don't mind being on overwatch?"

"Heh, gives me a chance to catch up on my backlog!" Ramirez laughs.

"Please be serious about this." Tarin sighs.

"Always am! Hey Rookie, don't give her a hard time, okay?"

"Um, yes sir?"

"Attention, preparing for Titanfall in T-minus ten seconds. All Pilots brace for drop." The hangar intercom booms.

Thankfully, you're already securely strapped in when the floor beneath your Titan practically falls out from under you, and you're propelled down by a launch catapult and out of the ship, where you immediately feel the weightlessness of zero gravity.

"ACTIVATING MANEUVERING THRUSTERS." BLL booms.

In front of you, you could see Tarin and Ramirez's Titans jetting out in front of you towards your objective, the derelict IMC ship. Tarin's Ronin lands securely on the hull, magnetic clamps built into its feet securely locking it on. Ramirez's Tone continues farther, heading for a small debris field where he could set up a concealed overwatch position.

Meanwhile, you guide BLL to land right behind Tarin. Her Ronin then swivels around to survey the area while you watch your camera feed of the Vengeance. The Militia cruiser lingers for a few seconds before engaging its boosters, making its escape from the sector. It was just your small team now.

"NO HOSTILES DETECTED." Tarin's Ronin observes, her optics sweeping across the hull of the derelict.

"NO REALLY, I WONDER WHY." BLL retorts. "MULTIPLE HULL BREACHES, NO POWER, NO LIFE SUPPORT, NO SIGNAL OF ANY KIND. I THINK WHOEVER WAS SHOOTING AT THIS SHIP WAS PRETTY THOROUGH."

Sure enough, you just now realized that the IMC ship was littered with hull breaches and shattered and melted armor plates. Sure signs of capital ship grade weaponry biting into it. Close range, too, judging from the intensity of some of the impact points.

"Who could've done it?" You wonder.

"ABOVE MY PAYGRADE." BLL rumbles. "LET'S JUST GET THIS OVER WITH."

"The interior is a complete mess, and the hangar bay looks to have been completely destroyed." Tarin sighs. "Our Titans won't fit. It looks like we'll have to go the rest of the way on foot."

"YOU SAYING I'M FAT?"

"No, just thickly constructed." Tarin grumbles as she casually disembarks her Ronin. "Come on, Rookie. We're going in."

You nod as you open up your cockpit. There's a brief pop as the interior atmosphere is sucked out, but your helmet and suit are designed to protect you from the vacuum. You hop out and turn back to BLL.

"Hold the fort for us, okay?"

"IT'S NOT LIKE THERE'S ANYTHING ELSE TO DO." BLL shrugs.

You use your grapple to hook onto the ship and pull yourself closer to Tarin's position. You see her using her jump kit to maneuver herself to the nearest airlock. Zero-G movement was the kit's original use, after all.

"We don't have a lot of time, so we're going to have to split up." Tarin explains as she pries the airlock door open. "I'll check out the bridge first. You sweep the rest of the ship."

"Yes ma'am." You nod.

The moment Tarin pops the airlock, the two of you dive in and immediately move for your objectives. Tarin darts away towards the bridge while you decide to head down to the engineering spaces. Generally, if something went wrong with a ship, that was the first place to look.

Despite all the battle damage, you navigate the interior of the wrecked ship easily enough. You had been trained extensively in the layouts of IMC ships, and this one didn't seem too different. Sure enough, you quickly reach the bulkhead door leading to the engineering block...

Thankfully, it looks like the Engineering bulkhead wasn't sealed, at least not completely, and there's a gap between the blast doors just wide enough for you to squeeze through. However, what you're greeted with was not the most pleasant of sights, especially when spheres of frozen blood and oil start bouncing off your visor.

It looked like a bloodbath had taken place in here. Bodies of IMC personnel, both soldier and standard crew, were floating all around the compartment. However, it didn't look like these guys were killed by the ship attacks.

Upon closer inspection, you saw that the few officers among the bodies were actually tied up, and there was an inordinate number of weapons floating around as well, some still clutched in the deathgrips of the regular crewmen. That definitely wasn't standard.

Continuing forward, you could see rows and rows of robotic Spectre soldiers, all thankfully shut down and inert. You look and see that the panel meant to boot them up had been completely sabotaged.

Some kind of mutiny? But for what reason?

That's when a glint catches your eye. You inspect the console further, and saw a Hack Knife jammed into it. Hack Knives were pretty rare and powerful equipment, and it wasn't like anybody here was using it now, so you didn't feel an compunctions appropriating it for yourself.

"Rookie, can you hear me?" Tarin's voice crackles through your radio.

"Yeah, I'm in engineering." You report. "Looks like the crew was shooting each other up. Someone also sabotaged the Spectres they were storing here, too."

"Good job." Your heart almost skips a beat at Tarin's acknowledgement of you. "I managed to pull the ship's flight recorder. Meet me at the airlock."

Stowing the Hack Knife away on your belt, you quickly boost your way back the way you came. There, you see Tarin, a large cylindrical tube tucked away under her arm.

"All right, let's link up with our Titans and-"

"Incoming!" Ramirez hisses. "Take cover!"

Both you and Tarin quickly duck back into the airlock just as an IMC cruiser lumbers past, searchlights activating and splaying across the hull of the derelict.

"Shit." Tarin mutters. "Did they find us?"

"Don't think so." Ramirez shakes his head. "I think it's just a cleanup crew. If you keep your heads down, they might pass you by."

"I RECOMMEND WE JUST KILL THE SHIT OUT OF THEM." BLL suggests. "THEY'RE CLOSE ENOUGH FOR A BOARDING ACTION."

"NEGATIVE, CHANCES OF SUCCESS ARE UNACCEPTABLY LOW." Tarin's Ronin counters.

"CHANCES MY ASS." BLL growls back.

"If we hide, they're gonna find us eventually." You point out. "Plus we got the element of surprise on our side!"

"True..." Tarin sighs. "All right, we'll get in our Titans and we'll assault the ship at close range. Hopefully if we're fast enough we can cause enough damage to chase them off."

"Hey, and I'll provide some support fire!" Ramirez adds.

"Okay, we'll only have one shot at this." Tarin says as she clambers out of the airlock and glides towards your parked Titans, taking care to avoid the searchlights. "Pick a section and take it out."

"I'll hit the cannons. That should give the Vengeance a better fighting chance against this thing." You decide.

"All right, I'll go for the bridge. Hopefully we can keep them blind and confused." Tarin nods. "Don't let us down, Rookie."

"I-I won't!"

"I'LL MAKE SURE SHE KEEPS ME ALIVE." BLL hums.

"Let's go." Tarin says as her Ronin winks out of existence, opting to use her phase shift rather than her boosters. With your more conventional Legion loudout, though, you had to make do with regular thrusters.

"Full power, BLL!" You order.

"AS IF THERE WAS ANY OTHER SETTING." BLL rolls his mono-optic.

Rocket boosters engage as BLL shoots across the gap between the two ships. In zero gravity, even the heavy and unwieldy Legion was capable of flight. At the apex of your jump, you could see Tarin's Ronin wink back into existence, right in front of the ship's bridge. The bridge crew didn't even had a chance to shit their pants before Tarin unloaded two shotgun blasts into the front viewport. However, IMC ships were built tough, and the glass cracks and spalls, but manages to hold firm...

...up until Tarin's Ronin draws her sword and engages a devastating horizontal swing, shattering the viewport and causing an explosion of air as the bridge section catastrophically decompresses, flinging debris and bodies into space.

Finally, BLL lands right on top of the cruiser's main turrets. He then brings his minigun to bear, unleashing a storm of armor piercing rounds into the other cannon turrets. Armor dents and shreds under the assault, and one by one the heavy cannons are knocked out.

And all the while you swear you can hear BLL laughing.

"Watch out, we've got incoming." Tarin warns.

"HEY, I WAS GOING TO SAY THAT." BLL snaps. "ANYWAYS, HOLLY, WE HAVE INCOMING."

"What have we got?" You ask, your grip on your control sticks tightening even more.

"ENEMY FIGHTERS AND TITANS LAUNCHING FROM THEIR HANGAR BAY." BLL hrums. "AT LEAST A FULL SQUADRON OF FIGHTERS AND THREE TITANS. CLASS CURRENTLY UNKNOWN."

Immediately, you could see Tarin's Ronin, sword still in hand, dashing off towards the hostile Titans. In the distance, you could see rapid muzzle flashes as Ramirez fired off bursts of heavy rifle fire at the fighters, forcing them to scatter.

Trusting that Ramirez can handle the fighters, you veer BLL towards the oncoming Titans. Blue Death or not, you figured that Tarin would have trouble dealing with 3:1 odds.

As you and BLL stomp forward, you glance back at the space battle. Ramirez continues to fire rifle bursts at the fighters, nailing a few and sending them veering off into space or slamming into debris. Thankfully, it looked like the fighters were being drawn off to deal with Ramirez.

You then turn you attention back to the enemy Titans. Immediately, you could see that Tarin was already engaged with one. It looked similar to her Ronin, but... it looked different somehow. Sleeker and more.. elegant?

"BLL, what are those Titans?" You frown.

"UNKNOWN. THEY DON'T MATCH ANYTHING I'VE SEEN BEFORE." BLL replies as he gets his minigun into firing position. "BUT I HAVEN'T MET A TITAN I HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO KILL YET."

Currently, Tarin was engaging the enemy Ronin, which seemed to be armed with twin swords instead of the single large one most Ronins you've seen wield. The second Titan looked to be an Ion, its weapon and body crackling with energy while the third looked sort of like a Scorch, except instead of a grenade launcher it was carrying a massive war hammer that glowed red hot in the dark void of space.

"BLL, target the Scorch!" You instruct. You'd just have to trust that Tarin could handle both the Ronin and Ion on her own.

"CAN DO." BLL booms as he swivels his mingun to target the Scorch and lets loose. A stream of crimson tracers that slam and ricochet off the Scorch's armor. Th heavy Titan immediately turns your way and starts lumbering forward, tanking the shots as it goes, even as its armor slowly but surely chips away under the hurricane of lead.

"TOUGH BASTARD." BLL observes.

And that's when you see a flash behind the Scorch, and two white hot stars erupt from mortar launchers mounted on its back. Without gravity, the two stars tumble towards you in a straight but lazy trajectory just head of the charging Titan.

"DON'T WORRY, I GOT THIS." BLL assures you. "THIS FATASS AIN'T GO NOTHING ON ME!"

BLL then ends his knees and leaps upward, the lack of gravity sending him up and away. The two thermite stars pass harmlessly under you while BLL continues pumping shot after shot into the Scorch from above, activating thrusters to counter the sheer thrust the minigum was generating.

The Scorch, its attempt to pin you down completely spoiled, is now stuck as it's relentlessly pummeled by bullets from above, leaving it extremely vulnerable to a finishing attack.

"Let's finish him, BLL!" You grin.

"I LIKE THE WAY YOU THINK." BLL rumbles.

You push your thrusters to full power, finally overcoming the force your mingun was exerting and quickly gaining forward momentum. The Scorch looks up and tries to counter with its hammer, but the continued stream of bullets hampers its movements. BLL then ceases firing the mingun long enough to change the angle, pointing it downwards like a spear. The cockpit jostles as the front end of your minigun punches straight through the top of the Scorch's head. The rest of BLL then comes down, planting his feet squarely on the Scorch's shoulders. The force of the impact is enough to buckle the enemy Titan's knees and dent the hull underneath.

And then you pull the trigger.

The combination of spinning barrels and armor piercing bullets completely shreds the Scorch from the inside out. Explosions and short circuits wrack the entire Titan's body before it falls limp, dark and dead.

"UPGRAAAAAAADE!" BLL chimes as he snatches the defeated Scorch's hammer. Not like it needed it anymore.

Meanwhile, you change your view back to Tarin, who's already cleaved the enemy Ronin in half top to bottom. She was currently engaging the Ion, but was having trouble getting close due to the bright orange beams of energy its rifle was spitting out in all directions.

The hammer is nice, but this is what we were made for. Ion is a rough matchup for Legion in a 1V1...and a pitiful joke when caught unawares like this. Lets show them what long range mode can do and put 50 rounds in the same square inch of cockpit.

"BLL, you thinking what I'm thinking?" You grin.

"IT'S AS IF WE HAVE SOME SORT OF NEURAL LINK OR SOMETHING."

"Well then you know what to do!" You laugh.

"SMART CORE ONLINE."

BLL then ejects the ammo box from the minigun and slaps in a fresh box loaded with the specialized smart rounds. A crosshair forms over the Ion as BLL locks on, feeding the targeting data to his weapon.

And then he unloads, bullets streaking through the air, tiny microthrusters in every bullet performing countless course corrections every second to ensure every bullet lands on target. Every bullet slams into the Ion's side with a spread no larger than a quarter. Such firepower focused into such a small area practically shreds the Ion in half as its waist completely disappears. There's small explosion and you can see the pilot eject, but he doesn't get far.

In a flash of blue, Tarin's Titan leaps in, swinging her sword with inhuman speed. One second the pilot was there in space, the next, he was just a red smear on Tarin's blade.

"THE CAPTAIN MAY BE A BITCH, BUT SHE SURE KNOWS HOW TO FINISH A FIGHT." BLL muses.

"Holy crap, that was awesome!" You gasp. "I didn't even know you could move a Ronin like that! She didn't even phase shift!"

"THERE'S A REASON THEY CALL HER THE BLUE DEATH." BLL rumbles.

At that moment, the Vengeance jumps in, having finally heeded the call for support. With her main cannons out, the IMC cruiser had no hope of fighting off the Militia ship in a head on battle. Immediately, the cruiser's engines light up, and you feel your momentum shift as the cruiser picks up speed.

"Move!" Tarin shouts as her Ronin leaps clear of the cruiser, lest she become an unwilling stowaway once the ship jumped out.

You follow Tarin's lead and have BLL leap clear as well. Your rear camera feed shows the cruiser jump to FTL before the Vengeance could bring her weapons to bear. It was over, for now, at least.

"Nice job, Rookie." Ramirez says proudly over the radio. "Two Titan kills on your first op? Not bad."

"She did perform better than I expected." Tarin agrees, her Ronin floating casually next to you. "Come on, Holly, Ramirez, let's head back."

"Oho, so she's not a Rookie anymore." Ramirez whistles. "Good job, kid. You're moving up in the world!"

"DO I GET A PROMOTION, TOO?" BLL asks.

"Titans don't get ranks, man." Ramirez responds.

"THAT'S FUCKING WORKPLACE DISCRIMINATION."

"Where the hell do you learn this shit?"

COMBAT EFFECTIVENESS UPDATED TO 60%

---

"Aaaaaah yeah, that was soooo needed!" You groan as you step out of the shower. Titan piloting, you found, was really REALLY sweaty work. It had been about six hours since you had returned to the Vengeance and bugged out of Demeter space. Just enough time to catch some sleep and get cleaned up.

Now... what to do?

You make your way back to the hangar, where you see BLL back in his dock, being doted on by the mechanics and technicians. Just a few meters away were his minigun, as well as the hammer you had appropriated from the Scorch. That was what was drawing the most attention from the techs, who were swarming all over it. Apparently, it had tech built into it that none of them had seen before.

However, you ignore them and jog you way over to BLL, casually sitting on his shoulder.

"Hey."

"DON'T YOU HAVE SOMEWHERE BETTER TO BE?" BLL's topside optic spins around to face you.

"Eeeeeh, not really." You shrug. "Just thought it would be cool to hang with you, that's all."

There's a brief pause. You swear that BLL's optic was squinting at you in suspicion.

"Ehehehe... no." You admit sheepishly. "I mean, it's not like I don't have ANY friends!"

"UH HUH, I'M SURE."

"Really! It's just..." You sigh. "I left them all back on Harmony. Most of them really aren't the military type."

"IT'S CERTAINLY A HAZARDOUS LINE OF WORK."

"But well, I guess I got you, now. We can be friends too right?" You grin at BLL's optic.

Another pause.

"I DON'T THINK YOU WANT TO BE FRIENDS WITH ME. OR TITANS IN GENERAL. IT WILL ONLY END IN TEARS."

"Hey, we can totally be friends!" You assure your Titan. "I mean, I'm a Titan nerd, and you're a Titan! We were practically made for each other! Or is it you were made for me...?"

"I APPRECIATE THE THOUGHT." BLL rumbles. "MAYBE IF YOU SURVIVE A FEW MORE MISSIONS, I'LL CONSIDER IT."

"It's a deal, then!" You say happily. Your gaze is then drawn to the hammer. "Anyways, anything new on your bling?"

"NOT MUCH. THE TECHS HAVEN'T SEEN WORKMANSHIP OF THIS CALIBER BEFORE." BLL shrugs. "THE BEST THEY CAN FIGURE IS THAT THERE'S SOME SORT OF FUSION REACTOR BUILT INTO THE HAMMER THAT ALLOWS IT TO CHANNEL PURE NUCLEAR ENERGY AS A SHORT RANGE DIRECTED BEAM ON CONTACT."

"That sounds metal as fuck."

"OF COURSE, I'M NO SURE HOW TO USE THE DAMN THING YET. BUT I SOOOO WANT TO."

"Excuse me, Pilot Foulke?" An odd, soft spoken but highly refined voice chimes in.

"Huh?" You turn and you see... a Spyglass robot painted up in Militia colors trundle forward.

"Captain Richards requests your immediate presence in the laboratory." The Spyglass announces. "Please make your way there post haste."

Guess it was time for some answers...
