You peek around the lockerrooms. Nobody. It's around 4:30 AM. Everyone should be asleep. Alright. The stress of the past week or so has gotten to you kind of badly. But, Mom and Dad always said this to you, sometimes you just need a quick few minutes to yourself to work off that stress. Normally, you'd have basketball or have a good book, but neither of those things are very convenient right now.

So instead, you've woken up at 4 O'clock sharp. After a quick shower and a brush of your teeth, you've gotten dressed in your skirt and blouse. And now you've decided to pull up a particular song on your phone. Time to relieve some stress.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYjDha139A8

You shut your eyes, shoving the phone onto a strap on your arm. You start dancing. You're barefoot, but that doesn't stop you on the smooth lockerroom floor. You weave about, tapping and moving your heels. You strafe between the lockers, holding a towel in your hands, waving it about like a ribbon. Ah... sweet stress relief.

You feel as if you're being watched. You turn around to see the Poles, standing there, smirking smugly.

“Dzień dobry, Ellie,” says Serafina, trying to suppress a laugh. You turn around and grab your jacket and hat from your locker, along with your pantyhose. Oh God, you're not even safe here! Aaah! Such embarrassment!

Caldwell notices that you're still blushing nervously from the Poles discovering your little dance number in the lockerroom. “Elodie Zumwalt, you look like you just sold your virginity.”

“Quiet you,” you say sharply. Caldwell huffs, looking back at her computer. You find Nimitz laying back on your chair. You pick him up, then sit down and set him down on your lap. And with that you, push in and log into your computer. You find Athena and Tessa discussing the weather, Mulcahy standing at the door, Denise at her desk as well, and Hilda at her own work as well. Nothing too out of the ordinary today it seems.

Except this. “Zumwalt.” Caldwell looks over at you from her computer. “The Captain actually just called me earlier.”

“Did she?” you ask. “What did she say?”

“Fall arrivals are coming next week,” says Caldwell. “So we have to be on the ball, and start dressing nice and fancy to impress. That means we need to wear our dress uniforms. There'll be an address on Monday to the new students, new adult workers as well, all that stuff. And that means we need to look our best.”

Denise smiles. “Ellie always looks her best.”

“If that's her best, I'd hate to see her worst,” Caldwell says quickly.

“Trust me, Caldwell. The only people who've seen me at my worst are now statues.” Caldwell giggles a little. You roll your eyes. Ugh, you're not a gorgon but you're certainly not a looker in the early morning anyway. “Now we have work to do, so let's get to it.” She nods, getting back to her work. “Denise, is there anything to do?”

Denise places down a stack of papers for you. “More logistics reports. The Captain wants you to review them before they're confirmed by our Navy Advisors later tonight.” Very well. You take one report and start looking over it. Yes, yes, standard stuff. No issues there. Though the thing about is that you have to send them back in the order they came so you can't just shove it to the side and let it stack. But a little trick you do is turn them over, then place them down. That way, they're all front down on the desk, and once you have the stack, just turn it over.

It does rely on you remembering to turn them over of course but still. At least you're not scanning these. That would be a nightmare.

You receive a phone call then. You check it. It's Mom. You pick it up, then quickly head outside of the office. “Hi, Mom.”

“Hey, sweetie! I'm not bothering you, am I?”

“No, I'm just in the middle of work.”

“Oh. So I'm bothering you.”

“No, no.” You roll your eyes. “What is it?”

“We're just packing our things, we gave our notices to our employers. We'll be taking the next plane to LGA as soon as we can. Maybe get there by tomorrow.” Oh, oh jeez. “Think things will be good when we get there?”

“Of course they will be. The houses here are quite lovely. Whichever house Logistics has lined up for you should be nice and tidy. And definitely bigger than our old one.”

“Can't wait!” says Mom. “Alright, well, I'll let you get back to work then, Ellie. You take care.”

With that, you return to work. Caldwell looks over at you as you sit back in your chair, With Nimitz resting on your lap. “Was that your mom?” You nod at Caldwell. Ugh, here it comes. “Interesting.” … Huh.

“No witty remark about my mother?” you ask.

“Nah,” says Caldwell. “I don't really consider parents that interesting to talk about anyway. I have a feeling that yours are probably the stereotypical hardworkers that work like five jobs at once just to put you through school.” Hey, that's not true. They only work three jobs. Each. “Not much to make fun of there.”

“Well thank you for being sensitive to my parents' plight then,” you say.

“Please, making fun of poor people is like shooting turkeys,” says Caldwell. “It's easy, but there's no challenge.” … right. You roll your eyes at her. You start going back through your reports.

“What were your parents like then, Caldwell?” you ask.

“Overbearing, expect nothing except success, push you to your limit, you know the usual.” Ah. She shrugs, still working at her computer. “Still, I love them though, and they always knew what was best for me. It's not like they were trying to hate on me or anything.” She huffs a bit. “Besides, everyone's a dick in New England.”

“You're from New England?” you ask.

“Boston thereabouts,” she says. “Why?”

“Well, my gunner is from around that area,” you say. “Her Dad owns half the Boston Red Sox.”

“Ugh. Fuck the Red Sox,” she growls. “They haven't been the fucking same since they won a World Series. My Dad used to tell me stories about how everyone would talk about how much the Red Sox sucks and it was great. Suddenly, they start winning, they turn into the new Evil Empire of baseball. It's not even entertaining when they lose anymore.”

“Oh. So you like baseball then?” you ask.

She shrugs. “Only the Yankees, and even then only because I hate the Sox more.”

Well. That figures.

Anyway though. The rest of the day goes by relatively quickly anyway.

You and your crew meet up at the local diner. Combined with the five from that, plus Denise, Caldwell, Tessa, Athena, Hilda, and Mulcahy, you had a pretty large party to order up for. Fries, fried chicken, burgers, gravy, and steak left the kitchen and rested on your tables as everyone got to know each other and shoot the breeze. You yourself munched down on a bit of steak too. “Ellie.” Winona leans closer to you, smirking smugly. “I hear a certain somebody was dancing alone in the lockerroom~!” You almost choke on your steak. Fuck. SERAFINA. AAAAHHHHH

“Dancing?” asks Caldwell.

“Yeah. Ellie dances like a dream,” says Stack.

“She's a really good dancer!” Denise boasts. “Why, she could attract any boy or girl she wanted to just by shaking those hips of hers.” Please, stop. “Right, Ellie?” You sink into your seat.

“Ha!” Caldwell laughs at you. “As if! Elodie Zumwalt is more stiff than a frozen corpse.” Hey! You- what!?

“I have video!” says Ingrid. “I can show you.” She leans over to Caldwell, who looks at Ingrid's phone curiously. NOOOOOOO

“Noooooooo...” You whimper. Nobody seems to notice as Ingrid shows you the video of you dancing. Caldwell looks on in confusion. Everyone else crowds around to see. You bang your head on the table. Ugh. Why did you dance for everybody? It's not like dancing is the end-all be-all. This isn't Footloose!

After the video finishes, Caldwell grins smugly at you. “Well, well, well, so Elodie Zumwalt can dance. But the way your face is in that video, it looks like you hate it and everything about it.”

“Please.” You huff, looking away with a blush. “I only did it because they begged.”

“And you caved like a fool,” says Caldwell. “Hmph. Besides, your dancing is sloppy, compared to me, Zumwalt. I could dance circles around you.” … what. “But we should save it maybe for the plebs aren't watching. Wouldn't want you getting stage fright.”

Stack giggles a little, looking at you. “Caldwell's lighting you up.”

“Whatever.” You grumble.

You all arrive at the Tank HQ. “Ellie! Ellie!” Griselda calls you over from your group. You motion for everybody to rally at the tank, then run on over to her. “Listen, today I need you to help me introduce the Survivalists to the Jagdpanther. Things are going to be pretty hectic today.”

“Why?” you ask.

“Because...” She steps outside and shows you. Around the fences and in high chairs all around the training grounds are students, adults, and more people. You can see a fan club for Iris up front actually, holding up a banner for her. “Of that. Don't worry, your fans are somewhere out there, they're just uh...” She looks at you, then shrugs. “But yeah. Duchess Schaeffer along with her compatriots are already dressed out in their green tactical vests, brown short shorts, and camo painting all over their tanned and toned bodies. They look at you and Griselda as you explain not the mechanics but the idea of running a tank. “Now, with a Jagdpanther, things are a bit simpler but a bit more complicated because you don't have a turret. But that means that in a close quarters fight, you are at a disadvantage. So that means, when it comes to ambush, you have to get the first shot.”

“We're ambush masters!” says Duchess. “Rely on us!”

“Yeah, yeah.” Griselda looks over the shoulder of Duchess' driver, a very ordinary looking girl named Jane McClane. She directs her as the rest of you stand outside on the engine cabin. “Right, take us forward.” The Jagdpanther roars to life, then slowly starts forward. “Thing about the Jagdpanther is that even though it's pretty big, it's pretty agile too. But one thing you have to remember.” Griselda turns out, then points to the gun barrel. “That. You strike a tree or a building wall with that, best case you can't turn any further. Worse case you knock the gun barrel loose or bend the barrel. You do not want that.”

As this happens, you watch as the other crews practice drills. They go around loops in the track, drag race with each other, or even practice their own tactical maneuvers. Iris as the team's first elite tank shows off her potential by having the Churchill climb a high angle wall, then gently balance itself on the top before lowering itself gracefully down. That earns an applause from her excited fans in the stands.

“Griselda.” She looks back at you. “What's with the crowd?”

“They've been building up since two weeks ago,” says Griselda. “Never noticed?” Honestly, no. “They usually dive for cover when the boys come but...” She motions up to the sky. “No boys. So. Yeah!” She smiles a little. “Nice not having to duck and cover for once, isn't it.” You suppose.

“So where do we fit the shotguns?” asks Duchess.

“You don't use shotguns in Tankery,” says Griselda. All the Survivalists go awww at that statement, dejected.

Practice ends relatively quickly but thankfully stress free. Why? No boys to crash the party. Everyone excitedly returns their tanks to the hangar to the cheer of the crowd. Iris' tank is quickly mobbed by fans who want autographs, pictures, the like. And to that, Iris simply plays along as best as she can.

You though...

“I have fans?” you ask.

The five of them nod happily, having the same hairstyle as you do, even wearing the same pantyhose, and even modifying their General Studies uniform to resemble yours a bit better. “We're the Elodie Zumwalt fanclub! I mean, there's only five of us so...” She twiddles her fingers a bit. “But we love you all the same! We've been meaning to order a Cromwell of our own so we can follow you into combat!” You hear the giggling of your crew. UGH. GUYS. “You are what makes Tankery great, Elodie! “Um. Yeah.” Ugh, how do you deal with people like this! You shove your hands in your pockets, looking at them sternly. “Another Cromwell would be nice.” They all grin happily, apparently having their egos boosted at having themselves be praised for a decision they made based on their wanting to be like you. “But. You don't need to copy me. Just do you. We have other tanks for you to practice us. Miss McPherson, the Roberts sisters, they can all train you pretty well if you want.”

“Wow.” The leader nods, looking at all of the tanks. “There are a lot of tanks! We'll see what we can do, Elodie!”

“Okay, thanks.” You smile at them. “Now, I should probably-”

“Wait!” They hold up photos of you at your match. “Can you sign these?”

Ugh, just this once. You take out a pen.

You lean back in your bath, sighing deeply. All the girls are now free to relax in the showers and baths of the showerroom, no longer needing to wash paint out of their hair or off their skin thanks to the wonders of not having boys around. Stack wiggles her fingers as she sees Ingrid bathing in the center of the bath, washing her hair. She slowly advances behind her and then, “Stack. I know you're sneaking up on me.”

“Damn!” Stack huffs, floating away.

“You shouldn't be jealous you know,” says Winona. “Big breasts can be a real hassle. You get pain in your back, you gotta spend forever and a decent amount of money getting bras to fit, it draws attention if you wear low-cut shirts, all that stuff!”

Stack grumbles. “I'm not jealous of your tits! I- I just... it's- Ellie, what's it like having-”

“I am not going to answer that,” you say firmly.

“Griselda.” You walk up to Griselda's hot tub, where she lounges around with Yuno and Luisa. She sighs, pulling the rag off of her eyes and looking to you with a smile. “You look happy.”

“Believe me, on the inside I'm absolutely dying with the fact that we have to face JWC this weekend,” she says. “I was actually talking with Perrine earlier this morning on the phone.” Oh? “She's very open about her lineup. She has Churchill VII AVREs, her own personal elite AVRE, one Karl-Gerat, several T34 Calliopes, the E-100, several engineering tanks like the Bergepanther, Bergetiger which isn't really an engineering tank so to speak, she's got the T31 Demolition tank, a Centaur bulldozer, some bridge layers, a Raketenpanzerwerfer IV, she's got a Kugelblitz, she has a couple of Schofield tanks, a Heuschrecke 10 SPG, a couple of CDLs, etcetera. And I've been studying their matches too.”

“What did you learn?” you ask.

Griselda sighs. Yuno answers for her. “Nothing.”

“Really?” you ask.

“Christie has a way of making themselves awfully hard to read,” says Griselda. “It's like-... you can't predict what they're going to do. They almost got away with trying to deploy their Schwerer Gustav in one match you know. Almost, they got fucked by the fact that it wasn't self-propelled.” She rubs her nose. “Honestly, I hate having to think about this.”

"They're hard to read, but not impossible. Their lineup is quirky and overwhelmingly slow, with a mix of long and short range firepower but very little intermediate capabilities. They get around their slow speed with engineering and support vehicles, allowing them to bridge obstacles and cross terrain otherwise deemed impassable. But it can't make them fast. We just have to stay mobile and adaptive ourselves, it'll string them out and keep their long range weapons mostly ineffective. Then we just gotta play solid tankery until we win. We can do that."

Supported and seconded. I tried thinking of what they would use all the auxillery units for, and was going to suggest that they would sabotage any natural roads/bridges and force some battles in terrible conditions, leaving time for long range to lock onto the place.

> “Hey, anything I can do to help?”

“Hey, anything I can do to help?” you ask.

“No, it's fine,” she says. “I mean, a sweep will basically seal our position in WL North. But if we draw or worse, we lose, we lose our position. And that means having to fight tooth and nail for the Wild Card. Just a good thought to relax to I suppose.” Yeah, not really. She sighs heavily. “But other than that. No, you don't have anything to worry about, Ellie.”

You nod slowly. “Well, okay. But if you need me-”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah...” She waves you off, smiling warmly to you. “Really, it's alright. Just go and relax. We have at least another day before the match. Plenty of time for you to do stuff.” Yeah, yeah. Like introducing your parents to the ship or... “By the way though. Tomorrow, photoshoot day. Wear something nice.” Ah, right.

And with that, you finish off your shower.

-

-

As you all get dressed, Ingrid nudges you. “Hey, Ellie. Can I talk to you?” You nod, then step outside with her. You're both pretty much dressed anyway. “It's about yesterday and what you said.”

“Really?” You tilt your head. “What is it?”

She shrugs, shifting on her feet a little, nervously. “I will admit um... please don't tell the others but I don't really-... You ever feel like you let down your parents, and they put on this happy go-lucky expression but they never show how disappointed they are?”

You blink. Well... “What do you mean?”

“It's complicated. It's-... it does have to do with baseball a little. I remember I was playing Little League as a kid. I was like ten I think. And... you might not know it but I was pretty good at baseball back then. I could steal a base, I could hit really well. Throwing wasn't my best part but... I was hoping one day.” She pointed up to the sky, smiling. “I could be like Derek Jeter or Barry Bonds, ya know? But a girl version. And I think my parents loved that too, they always attended my games and stuff! It was great!”

“Then what happened?” you ask.

Her smile drops completely. “I stopped being good at it. I never lost the skill but the boys they just... you know puberty, right?” Oh. Right. “Once they started growing up, getting taller, longer arms, broader chests... they just became unhittable and then one day, a coach from an opposing team asks me, 'when am I going to try out for softball?' and...” She looks down. “I know this sounds kind of petty.”

“It doesn't,” you say. “So...”

“I feel... I already told you me and Mom are distant. Dad's always working too. I feel- I feel like I let them down. I love baseball. I love it to death. There's no other sport I'd rather be playing,” she says. “Tankery is nice, it's great. But my parents didn't grow me up with Tankery, they grew me up on baseball. We'd listen to the radio in the car to Vin Scully casting a day game on a warm pleasant afternoon. Sometimes we'd get to go to a real game too. Never caught a home run ball but-... been to a lot of games.” She folds her arms, sighing deeply. “And it really hurts knowing, the way things are, I might never get to play on those diamonds. And I think my parents are hurt by that too.”

You can get by without. Obviously, spoilers are a thing, but too late now.

Your parents are probably more hurt by seeing you upset, but they don't know how to fix it

You should. It's a helluva ride.

To cut to the chase about Perrine.

You must understand this about Perrine. She is playing the game one level higher than you are. Whatever you are thinking of, she KNOWS you're thinking that. I truly believe the best way to beat her is simply not thinking at all.

Thanks. I got into this quest about... thread 30ish, and osmozsed enough of the first quest to get by, though the spoilers didn't ruin my want to read it someday.

All I can really say is spoilered is there is something called the 'End of Series Cluster Fuck' and was apparently like, a hour long debate over maneuvers and resulted in an unholy 50 CP THING. It also made GS despair.

~We should totally do it~

I'd recommend it, Schteel's writing's a bit choppy at a technical level at least early on but he improved markedly over the course of running it.
>>
> “Don't let your limits define you.”

“Don't let that define you,” you say. “Maybe you're not good enough for baseball, but that's fine. We all like things that we know we can't do. And you know, dreams are just that, they're dreams. Just because you might not get to be a baseball player doesn't mean you can't be anything else.” You place your hand on her shoulder comfortingly. “Just remember that, Ingrid.”

“Yeah.” She nods slowly. “Yeah, okay.”

“Feel better?” you ask.

“Sort of. But...” She sighs. “I don't know. We'll have to see later, alright?” You hear people exiting the lockerroom. “I'll catch you on the flipside.” With that, she leaves for the hangar. The other crews start walking past you as well, talking indistinctly among themselves.

You stand around in the hangar, smiling at everyone. The crews are having a nice happy dinner, rice curry with some pork, simple stuff from Giap. Penny as well came by with her food truck was well to dispense cookies and treats for dessert. All in all, everyone's spirits were looking up. Just what you needed in time for the match.

You turn to the hangar door. And out in the darkness was her.

Arisu. She stares at you.

A part of me wonders if the last question was determining what her loyalty quest would be, and choosing the keep at baseball option would have made the goal to like, beef her up and set up a game on LGA for her rents to see.

But, that is applying videogame logic and sometimes a dream is a dream.

Considering her mom is losing her job in it soon, maybe the switch to Tankery will go over nice?
>>
>>1108632
I'll leave the final decision to everyone else but I am the sort of person who would pursue a dream no matter how hard or impossible. To see someone give up so early and with lack of fanfare is depressing.
>>
> Walk over to her, she must need something.

You come up to her with your dinner, blinking. “Uh, Arisu. What do you need?” you ask. She points to your plate, looking up at you. “Uh, yeah. Have some if you'd like.” She takes your plate and starts elegantly scarfing down rice and pork. After a few minutes of her eating, she covers her mouth and burps quietly, then places the plate aside on a table. “Something you need then?”

“Pick me up. We are going for a walk,” she says.

“Pick you-” … eh. Best not question it. You let Arisu climb up onto your back and piggyback ride you. Then you start walking out to the sidewalk. “Um. Is this a test of some kind?”

“No,”she says. “I just wanted you to pick me up and walk around.” Oh. You walk around in the dark, illuminated only by streetlights every now and again. “However, I did want to talk to you about J. Walter Christie. They are not a school to be underestimated, nor is Zhou Enlai School of Business and Economics.”

“Really?” You look back at Arisu. “Why's that?”

“Mei Xiang happens to be a student of the Shimada-ryuu. We met a few times when she was training at one of our camps,” she says. “While cold on the outside, she is very driven. I am aware that you two may not have the best of relationships.”

“Not really,” you say. “She was pretty rude all things considered, trying to poach Iris from us.”

“That is her Senshadou,” says Arisu. “As much as my mother hates it, and the older guard of Senshadou hate it, the sport is changing. Things are not as they were a few years ago.” You nod along to it. “Very soon, the Shimada-ryuu may not be relevant anymore. Nor will the Nishizumi-ryuu. Mei Xiang understands that times change, and that tradition no longer has a place in Senshadou.” She looks down, her face blank and yet sad. “Senshadou is changing.”

I do agree it is depressing, especially since Elodie got her dream to go on a schoolship despite growing up supes poor.

At least helping Ingrid get closer with her rents, wether they are somewhat dissapointed in her or not, will help her.

Perhaps some rules need to be put in place to prevent buying a great team.

Always important, history and tradition will be.
>>
> “Tradition will always have a place in Senshadou.”

“Tradition will always have a place in Senshadou,” you say. “Things change, yeah. But what matters, sportsmanship, politeness, elegance, grace, strength, passion, that doesn't. That's what makes Senshadou great. People might say Senshadou is weird, that it's dangerous, or that it doesn't make sense. But that's what makes it great in the end.” You smile at Arisu. “Tankery is built on contradictions. It's a loud, proud, fiery sport that attracts the demure and the polite. It's a team sport that depends entirely on the individual. It's an art of nature and beauty that relies on the control of the industrial and the steel. Where yesterday's foe is today's friend. And most of all, it's a sport of elegance and friendship born of violent war. And it's those contradictions that we know Tankery. That's why I love it. And probably why my mother loved it too.” You frown a bit. Mom.

Arisu looks at you, her gaze fixed apparently. Then she looks down at the ground. “We can go back to the Hangar.”

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

With that, you turn around and head on back. In just about ten minutes time, you make it back to the Hangar in time to see everyone preparing to go to bed. You drop Arisu down, letting her look up at you. “Well, Arisu. I should go. Nice chatting with you.”

She nods. “Zumwalt-san.” You blink, looking to her. “I hope one day that you find your Senshadou.”

“Hey, Ellie!” Winona waves to you. “Come on over! I got the Xbox warmed up for you!” You look to her, nodding. Then you turn around to say good night to Arisu.

Only to find her gone.

You sigh, then walk on over to your friends. Find your own Senshadou, eh? Well, you're close. Definitely close.

Good show GS. I look forward to next week with match one and family and photos coming into play.

I kinda like where our Senshado style is going. I like being the measured and composed tank brawler with an intellectual streak that we have become. Not a market I think many commanders have.

Also our fan club is adorable and I look forward to seeing what THEY think we represent.
>>
>>1108901
Thanks for the run.

I thought our Senshado was about doing the hard work, to win the match, without concern for glory. A solemn, dignified, steady style.
>>
>>1110530
>>1109030
I kind of think it's both. Brawling isn't really elegant, and it is where we're heading somewhat, but the intellectual hard working side is a part of it too.

I don't know if anyone has named the style but realistically there is little else to call it but "Blue Collar Senshado". It actually has a nice ring to it, in my opinion.

> "Blue Collar Senshado"

I like it. Implies a solid work ethic, and a focus on getting the job done, without being afraid to get dirty.
>>
>>1110662
It is the style of Senshado that could only come out of someone like Elodie Zumwalt.

And that's kind of a big thing. And I mean, it kinda plays into how the all star vote is going. Nobody VOTES a blue-collar player into an all star game unless you're John Scott in 2016.

But as has been made clearly evident by every single tanke commander we come up against. We are respected like nobody's business. They know that of the triple threat of Gris, Iris and Ellie, we're all capable of being something to be feared. It's almost like a police force.

>Gris:Chief, leads the squad, don't get her angry, is a firecracker on the field
>Iris: Good Cop, elegant but effective at the job
>Ellie: Bad Cop inelegant, brutish, but efficient
