---

The Isvind Expanse is largely untouched by the axe of industry. It spreads like a green wildfire across eastern Vanadiar, turning plain and grassland into a mist-shrouded ancient wood. The occassional hamlet shelters within the trees. Rumors persistently claim entire cities are found within, old temples, lost treasures, armies of deserters, covens of witches, lairs of Primordials and fireglass deposits.

The truth is, Isvind seems to abhor attempts at civilization. Axes break, loggers go missing, shipments disappear - and somewhere, at the back of your mind, you get the itching sensation of being watched. Nearby villagers tend to make small offerings to the forest spirits. Perhaps it works for them and buys them the protection they need but for us, that will not do. So we must trust in ourselves and our weapons, and see our way through.

Near the Isvind Outskirts, before the canopy chokes out the sky, we find a traveller's waystation, fortified and warded. The people there may be able to tell us of news concerning the deeper forest, and we can also see who else has taken the forest trail if we visit the place. It might even be that the way-station, with walls and halls, would serve as a regroup spot for the broken East Army. Even now, it may be that our allies tend the fire and prepare brews for our visit!

The baggage trains stretches out behind us, the civies glad for the momentary rest. We'll leave them here with token protection, then ensure the road ahead is clear.

With our ordered retreat from Howarth's Crossing, we've managed to liberate a good amount of supplies.

Some neccessarily go to food and the folk, but some others we can put to good use.

And Carlsteen says she's whipped up something too.

"Can I ask a question? Why do you reinforce your shield instead of your armor?"

Out of character? It wasn't very clear what counted as equipment at the start, so I reinforced the shield because it's an explicit item on the character sheet. Subsequently I wanted to double down on it for coolness.

In character? I'm not reinforcing nothing, that's the weaponry I have access to.

[Study] 55: I'm not sure with this skill does ('learning'? 'observe in detail'?), but you have said that Illusion is used for relaying messages across long distances -- is that perhaps what these towers are for? Perhaps there are traces of illusion magic here, or markings that I would be taught to recognise.
A signal tower would help us to communicate with the city, assuming that towers down the line are being maintained.

Some questions before leveling up,:
Does taking [hero] means I am 1 level higher for leveling up?
Is there any way for a squad to gain/buy regalia points other than taking [heavies] twice? can you get the successive bonus instead of the base one? I need a bigger and fancier hat
Is StromCorp a doctrine/specialty and thus can be gained with the [Hero] bonus? If yes can we get a sneakpeek?
Is dodge a tap or an act?

Denied. Also drop of 2 vit. You are retro-actively applying a bonus that does not applicate to you.

Unless specifically called out, changing things on the generation sheet has no effect on already established characters (who commonly keep their "stuff" as a veterancy bonus).

2-4 small adjustments are made per game as playing reveals a few awry areas.

I'll take the hug, mind.

The Shield and the Armor is the corner-stone. As usual, captain Albrecht could tell you more. What I can tell you is this:
Armor protects you fully from all sides
Shields are directional

Armor is bypassed by [heavy] weapons, like warhammers and giant fists. No metal will protect against the concussive force, your flesh is at fault.

Shields are byypassed commonly with finese, or better aim but can protect against heavier attacks as damage to the shield is not damage to your fragile meat.

Armor protects just yourself.
A shield protects those nearby - attacks passing through your hex treat your shield DR as cover DR as you interpose your regalia to protect those nearby.

A shield can be used as an offhand attack, and can contain more enchantments. Armor can't be lost, disarmed or fired through.

You can [Block] with a shield, raising its natural DR by +1 per prof spent blocking. Armor just is. Many Legionaire Techniques rely on forming a proper shield wall, tetsudo or block advance.

Should you fall in battle, your customized plate cannot be repurposed. Your shield can be used by those who are worthy to carry on your legacy.

>>1122601
A Signal Tower seems likely. It would belong to the Waystation, and carry messages across the forest - plus likely it would hold a courier or two for more traditional packages. What it is now is anyone's guess.

>>1122615
Looks like... Hey! It's the soldiers from the 11th Light Infantry! What are they doing out here?

>>1122621
Yes. Much too late for that.

>>1122714
No it does not, it gives you the listed bonuses and NOTHING else changes. XP ranking and expenditure stays the same (if you survive).
Visit a Quartermaster to be issued better gear and allow [XP] to be used for [Regalia].
Neither, StormCorp are a [Unit Advancement], which changes your unit - like a Knight becoming a Paladin or a Practicioner becoming an Invoker.
>But how? WELLLLLLLLLL. . . Who knows.
Dodge happens automatically, but it helps to know you can do it if you mention its existence. It's rolled vs attacks you can see coming.

'ey'ey'ey'ey ease up there with the shouting, screaming shrieking, stomper

*I* ain't fighting no one. I mean, if these soldiers happen to accidently stab-slash-slice someone just 'cause I happen to asked 'em too, ya can't rightly real go n' claim that that falls in my camp, yeah? That won't hold up in court! It's a foolprof legal defense.

Mostly.

Sides, THEM's fighting US. Shirkers got a load fulla gold from this be-plumed, pulchritudous Pythie and went all a-traitor. Swear it on me cavalry steed, what they took hostage in the stables of that there inn.

Asked us to join 'em,something about a large caravan o' walkin' loot coming this way down this winding path. Now old Merk's motley murderers ain't ever been much shy of killin' --- easy with the spittle there - but stabbin' a buncha unarmed refuges for their gold teeth?

Man's gotta have standards. Now they kicked us out outta the way-station, barricaded the road AND took my favorite STEED hostage! AND HOW CAN I BE A DASHING CAVALRIST WITHOUT A DAMN MOUNT???

yeah old Merk can shout too. Brrraaa.

You aren't Merkalin's mangy mutts. Who are you working with? You pushing ahead of the Legion advance?

it's real simple

is kill Merkalin for me.

Yeah.

Yeaaaaah --- Kill him, we take the gold, you get the waystation, and everyone lives to see a better tomorrow. 'Cept for Merk and his dogs. Then once the Pytherians roll down this road, we'll be WAY ahead of them and on our way to sunnier climates!

So fancy hat fellow is offering us half the gold as long as we kill whoever is ordering these troops to man the barricades. Berkalo, on the other hand, is asking us to kill the hat fellow in exchange for passage.

On the one hand, Berkalo's offer is the easiest- most of our force is within striking distance of the High Marshal Admiral. On the other hand, we gain less.

The important thing to remember is that we are members of an army that is currently attempting to hamper an invading force. Both of these officers could probably be accused of dereliction of duty, seeing as neither is tending to the defense of the region. Best case scenario would be to convince the troops that we hold the moral high ground and remove both officers from their positions, by force if necessary.

Killing Merkalin, accepting Berkalo's offer and then killing Berkalo once we get close might be the easiest way to accomplish this.

Unlike their Sigilshooters cousin, Repeaters need not be reloaded but their rate of fire comes at a price. The internal mechanisms are finnicky, and prone to jamming - and it takes special practice to master the storming advance to avoid the weapon from throwing off your aim. Most find shooting at close range the preferable alternative.

This is what I get for playing around with maddened hexes and infernal gold. I knew finding a treasure chest full of shinies was too damn convenient to be good news.

If we get out of this alive, you bet I'll make all of you run ten laps around this entire forest.

Knock those 5th Rangers to the ground and try not to kill them. This geasa is corrupting their minds. We'll find a way to fix it later, and if not, water and abjuration will perhaps do the trick.

*I* am going to rescue my mount from this stable. The only reason this spell would be gathering strength is if the original Practicioner responsible is getting closer.

The illusionary figments of the 5th Company fades, leaving a bedraggled, confused morass of infantry guarding a barricade.

We don't have long to catch our breaths, or get to know our new friends. Pytherian Pathfinders are advancing on the ridge, likely far-advance scouts of the Legion which yet trails behind us.

We need to organize these soldiers into a proper defense

---

[Captain Berkola Winters]

My head. What happened?

[Lt. Colonel Merkalin]

Remember Icefast? That, but with paired geas-bound artefact.

[Captain Berkola Winters]
Oh. Tricky. And who are these gentlemen?

[Lt. Colonel Merkalin]
Bunch of rattled footsloggers, fleeing Fort Valor. Albretch's lot. Arrived in the nick of time too.

[Captain Berkola Winters]
So they did. Are we good?

[Lt. Colonel Merkalin]
Looks like my lot caught the worst of it. They're still spellbound in the storage room. Every one of them. I don't think the 11th will be doing much fighting.

Also, you threatened to murder my mount.

[Captain Berkola Winters]
Well, I wasn't entirely cogni--

[Lt. Colonel Merkalin]
We'll let it slide. This one time, Captain. Chalk it up the the malign influence of cursed, vexatious gold.

[Captain Berkola Winters]
I don't understand this. Why did we want to flee South? The Isvelt is in the east. Our home is here! We can't flee in the face of the ENEMY.

[Lt. Colonel Merkalin]
Here's my guess - someone stumbled acros a hidey-hole for their gold and hats, hence the chest and skeletons. Some Theurge plant embedded a Geasa into it, and whoever finds it puts it on, spreads it to all they talk and everyone flees the country. Less soldiers to fight. For the best it didn't happen, I take it.

At least we--

Carlsteen reports from the civilian baggage train. She's getting faint flickers of thaumathurgical activity, and suspects that that something is still active in and around Isvind.

Pytherian Pathfinders have captured the SW Tower.

Night will fall in 2 turns.

These three facts may be related. The 3 towers and waystation together acts as a bounding ward to protects travellers from the deeper forest, and with the Other being so active on this forest road we've likely drawn the attention of something.

We need to make a choice here:

We can wait until morning and the civilians will move, but if the Pathfinders are here /now/, then that means they're planning something. Their orders were (likely) to bring the towers down to slow us. Palatine Crassus must have ordered one of his Cohorts to march at pace, hoping to catch us against the road block. Come morning, they may engage us and we'd have to see them off.

Or we move now, at night - but then this we'll have to protect the civilians from whatever lurks in the Forest.

Explosives in the aid station are a bad thing, why didn't you take them with you so they weren't a problem? A well placed shot through the porthole-or a lucky one- by one of those pathfinders and the whole tower goes up in explosions

I'm fucking nervous, I got lucky fucking with those things in the first place, I'm sick of seeing them, they're a huge threat to EVERYONE, and I swear they're looking at me funny, dammit!
>>1132391
Water acts as a natural protection against magic, if we managed to douse them in water it might make the thing just fall apart, since they're magically driven
>>
>>1132398

>>
>>1132420
Ah yes, I would take the explosives out while at this very moment pathfinders could be watching us. Surely the reason couldn't be I wanted to eliminate the enemy a clear 30 meters away before I do so.

Sometimes I wonder how some people even make it as knights these days...
>>1132425
WHAT DID YOU THINK I WANTED TO DO! But now apparently sir knows it all is going to trash the powder.

I don't think it's too late.

And I also don't think knight know it all has irreperably trashed it.

Lets take a chill pill and set some mines, eh?
>>
>>1132437
I am going to trash the powder because all it takes is a Stealth's squad of pathfinders ignoring you to come kill the measly two troopers and blow up the tower. With a single etc in the bargain.

The GM is smarter than you think, and he's trying to kill us. Everything points to them wanting to blow the towers BOTH up, and they aren't going to stop until they do, I'd even bet they're, setting explosives up the tower they have now. Was I being hasty in trashing the powder? Yes. are YOU being a bit irresponsible leaving explosives in the aid station that the enemy wants to destroyand can be expected to be moving to destroy at this moment? Yes. So open your eyes and realized we are both making mistakes.
>>
It might be a little early, but I have a plan of how to meet the Pytherian advance.

The main idea is to set up fortifications strong enough that the enemy will need sigilcraft or theurges to punch through them. Then, when the enemy sigilcraft/theurges show up, we attack them directly to deprive the enemy of their heavy hitters.

Our means of attacking the priority targets are:
>Direct magical attacks by Elementalists
>Direct abjuration by Convocants
>Flank attack by Merkalin's sigilcraft
>Pre-summoned Brutes hidden in Elementalist-made tunnels under the potential battlefield

We can make wide use of illusory troops to divert enemy's attention from the real ambush
>>
>>1132437
"How people even make it as knights"? Without me, you fool, you wouldn't even be using those fancy guns, the tower would be destroyed , there would be no reinforcements, the knights across the way may not have been on our side, and we wouldn't even be bickering over the powder!"

Dude, that's pretty rude
>>
>>1132457
I think your being far to paranoid right now. I mean there is currently a small mob of our people around the tower and another mob marching on the south tower. However if you really feel this way I'll retract my statement to leave it and stay at the tower and make it into a fortress while you people kill everyone outside. Then we can mine the place.
>>

>>1131167

1. Kill the Pytherians

Its both.

And most of those 5th Rangers writhing on the ground are effectively combat casualties who will recover with time.

It appears some small part innately resisted the demand to kill their kin, which is why they never hit us and have only incapacitated each other.
>>
>>1132312
You would need to study the lay of the land.

This old forest is worn with time, so some must be found.
>>
>>1132642
Having had a look at it, it appears the gold is cursed. It practically reeks with Other. The hats were the anchor points, spreading the geasa to those the wearer naturally commands. A parasitic inversion of bonds of prized loyalty.

And this is not quite gold at all; some sort of yellowed material

Most reminiscent of bone. Cunningly worked. But scenes these coins commemorate are from no cities I recognize and no faces have quite that many teeth.
>>
>>1134057
we should use it as a trap. Like, throw it onto the enemy from the inn's window like you would hot boiling oil, in the hope that some would carry some with them.

Or alternatively, leaving it somewhere where the enemy troops might come by, but that will only work if no officers or magis would accompany the squad finding it, because they would likely recognize it.

The waystation is a nexus of life and warmth, a little outpost of ciivlization standing strong against the old oak and deep wood.

The outlying towers houses couriers and equipment, and act as reinforcement anchors for a ward for the entire place - not to abjure combat spell or break flesh, but to keep something from rooting out the little freplace of hospitality in the deep wood.
