You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

Currently, you found yourself facing off against the Abyssal Summer Princess, apparently the head honcho of the Abyssals occupying Singapore. Outside, the battle for the city still raged, with fighters form both sides swarming around the massive Spire Snake as it retaliated with storms of gunfire and its sheer mass. Every motion caused the flooded room you were in to swing and sway, creating artificial waves and swells in the water, making what would already be a tough battle even tougher.

Meanwhile, Kidd was off dealing with the DD Princess while Portland and Paz were teaming up to fight the CL Princess. Unfortunately, you couldn't focus too much on their individual battles, as you kept your gaze on the Summer Princess, trying to discern her next move.

At first glance, you could immediately tell she was some sort of BBV, as she was packing both heavy caliber guns and carrier decks on her obsidian black Rig. No aircraft launches yet, but it wouldn't take her long to do that anyways...

>You need to get close in and hit her with torpedoes.

Good catch there, the reason why we voted for VLS was because Hoel would still get ASROCs, which she isn't using this mission (16x ESSMs and 4x LRASMs IIRC)

Try the longer ranged missiles first. Once they're used up, then use close-in weapons like the torps.
>>
>>1125012
You decide to keep your distance, your guns laying shell after shell into the Summer Princess. Of course, her Rig expands and reconfigures to shield her body from the brunt of your fire, and even with the thick armor, the sheer rate of fire of your guns was punching into the soft and exposed bits of her Rig, setting fires and destroying optics and other important bits.

However, that's when white, skull like fighters begin to emerge from her flight decks, taking to the air. Immediately, they're cut off by flights of F-35s as they dive in, vomiting missiles in all directions and scattering their formation.

"Go get her, Hoel!" Paz winks at you as she dodges a torpedo spread from the CL Princess.

With her fighters otherwise preoccupied, the Summer Princess just sighed as her heavy guns began to slowly traverse to lock onto you. Your missiles stowed away in your VLS cells bristled with anxiety, waiting to be given the order to launch.

Up this close, there's really no need to stop to target the Princess. You get solid tone as 20 missiles erupt from your VLS launchers and streak towards the the Princess. And even though the ESSMs were meant to anti aircraft missiles, it was a simple matter to override their guidance systems to have them target the Princess instead.

>FATE POINT used!
>No FATE POINTS remain!

The LRASMs spear out ahead of the rest of your volley, their built in seekers searching for the most vulnerable areas of the Princess' Rig. Four missiles fly out and find their targets, four massive explosions rippling across the Princess' Rig as her flight decks are reduced to ash, preventing her from launching any more fighters.

Meanwhile, your sixteen ESSMs spiral and twirl through the air as they come down, smaller explosions rippling across the Princess's Rig and inflicting more damage. A handful come down straight from above, and the Princess casually opens up an umbrella.

A fucking umbrella!

However, that umbrella was made out of tough shit, as it manages to repel most of the missiles, but the impacts completely shred apart the "fabric" and set it aflame.

Some smoking embers fall into the Princess' teacup and her eyebrow visibly twitches.

"If you're so intent on throwing all your firepower away, I suppose I should return the favor..." She sighs as she actually stands up, her Rig starting to unfurl like a rotten flower, more guns beginning to protrude out and taking aim at you.

Well shit.

Fortunately for you, it doesn't look as if the Summer Princess was expecting the sheer power of your acceleration. You shoot forward like a cannonball before her turrets even have a chance to track you. She tries to close up her Rig to block your path, but she's not quite fast enough to stop your swing. Your bat manages to find a gap in her defenses and the steel club whistles through...

...and strikes the teacup the Princess is holding gingerly in her hand. You can feel her wrist snap and break under the impact, but even worse, her teacup falls from her hand and shatters on her Rig, spilling shards of cup and tea all over the black carapace.

And that's when the Princess' eyes go red.

"No more games." The Princess growls as her Rig looks to be... receding in to her...?

However, you don't have a lot of time to mull on the matter when the entire room suddenly flips over upside down. Water splashes and spills out of the hole in the ceiling, which was now the floor. You feel a brief sensation of vertigo and your brain goes into datalink mode to let you analyze the situation.

The room did in fact flip upside down in an extremely rapid fashion. Looking around, you could see that the DD and CL Princess apparently didn't get the memo and were toppling head over heels out of the hole below.

Unfortunately, your fellow shipgirls weren't faring any better. You could see Portland tumbling, her glasses askew. Kidd was also tumbling, Pepe gripping the collar of her shirt and tugging, his wings frozen in a panicked mid-flap, as if his tiny wings would be able to lift his master out of danger. Paz was somehow still on her feet, trying to reach for the other two shipgirls.

Time suddenly snaps back into motion as you perform your midair twist with a speed and grace that would impress even an Olympic gymnast as you land on your feet. You take advantage of the water flowing out to drive your momentum forward, skating down at full speed. You scoop grab Kidd's hand first and drag her along as you reach out to Portland, who manages to get a grip on your other arm.

That's when you strain as you switch your engines into full reverse, trying to fight gravity and the current of the falling water.

Exactly the moment the Princess was waiting for. She brings all her guns to bear on you, Kidd, and Portland. Your friends weren't back up on their feet yet and you couldn't maneuver while you were holding on to them-

And that's when Paz interposes herself between you and the Princess, her arms held up in a defensive pose. Two slabs of armor plate sketch themselves into existence over her arms like massive shields just in time to absorb the full fury of the Princess' barrage.

"T-this is about all I can do, Big Sis!" Paz winces as she hold her ground. "The rest is up to you!"

Portland, funnily enough, is the first on the draw. She steps out from behind Paz's protective shield and readjusts her glasses as her guns lock on to the Princess. And just like that, all nine guns fire, and all nine shots slam into the Princess' true body, tearing through her clothes and skin like paper.

Kidd adds in her firepower, firing her blunderbuss which sends a storm of pellets in the Princess' direction, but it's not nearly as effective as Portland's volley, most of the shots glancing off or or digging into the Princess' Rig.

And you're already breaking cover, closing the distance to the Princess, now suspended over the hole in the ceiling-turned-floor. She's still reeling from Portland's volley, and she doesn't see your approach until it's too late.

You bend your legs and LEAP, clearing the gap between you and her, landing right atop her very own Rig. The Princess turns her head, now twisted with fire and rage, but it's too late. You're in the perfect position and swing your bat with all your might.

It connects, and it connects HARD. One minute, her head is there, and the next, it's gone, having been completely removed from her body. Your radar only catches a glimpse of the airborne head before it punches through the wall and sails away into the sky without even slowing down.

"Cooooool!" Paz cheers.

"Haha! That be a proper hit!" Kidd grins.

"A bit crude.... but I won't deny it was effective." Portland nods.

"Ha! Nothing too it!" You grin, trying not to let them know just how bad your entire body was shaking and trembling, sweating beading and pooling all over. You couldn't shake the feeling that if your swing hadn't connected, things would have gotten REALLY bad.

"H-Hoel!" Anna's voice buzzes in your head. "Did you get the Princess? Abyssal resistance is collapsing on all fronts!"

You pause for a second. You look to your friends, and then to Paz, who seems to be endlessly amused by Kidd's victory jig.

I think the most threatening injury was either when her boilers exploded back when she was going to show off, or when there was an option to keep the abyssal corruption in her brain.

I guess the biggest issue with getting to the point she is hospitalized but not dead is that there usually isn't much leeway between coming out of a fight with moderate damage, or being killed.

The best way, and I say this while wondering if 'best' can be applied to a way for Hoel to be seriously hurt, would need to be taking a hit for someone, like Portland did with that torpedo.

"Yeah, we got her." You nod. "The Princess is down."

"R-really?! That's great!" Anna chirps.

"Well, this is great and all." Portland frowns as she peers out the hole in the ground. "So, how are we supposed to get down?"

"I didn't think THAT far ahead." You sigh.

"Figures." Portland shakes her head.

"Oh, I'm sure things will work themselves out!" Paz tries to assure you all.

---

A couple of hours and a harrowing rappel ride later, and you were back at the allied forward base. With the Summer Princess eliminated, Abyssal resistance in Singapore had essentially collapsed, and the only thing left was cleanup operations.

However, the whereabouts of the CL and DD Princesses remained unknown, and were officially declared missing, though you were sure they both managed to slip away to fight another day.

But all in all, the operation had been a success. However, it wasn't without a price. The Spire Snake had inflicted rather heavy casualties on the ground and air forces within the city limits but fortunately it wasn't able to get out to sea to attack the invasion fleet. Already, you could see the masses of wounded being collected at the base as well. Those that could be treated on site were carted to aid stations, while those that couldn't were swiftly airlifted to waiting hospital ships.

The dead were placed out of sight so as not to hurt morale, but everybody knew.

But with the bulk of the fighting over, all of the shipgirls were being pulled off the line for rest and refit. Fortunately, there weren't any permanent losses, but a good deal of the shipgirls hadn't come out of the battle completely unscathed.

Meanwhile, you were...

Fortunately, you weren't too badly damaged, so the first thing that happened when you got to the base was that you were whisked away to the HQ to be debriefed.

Paz also seemed to be dragged along with you, though you were separated from Portland Kidd, no doubt they were to be debriefed by different officers. So it was just you and Paz, sitting in an eerily empty meeting room with the Admiral, the Captain, Sammy, North Carolina, and Mulberry.

"All right, let's not waste time here." The Captain speaks grimly. "Hoel, we received reports from Sendai and Haida that you three had encountered an Abyssal that looked exactly like Jinstuu, is that correct?"

"Yeah." You nod. "She was practically a clone! In appearance, at least."

"I though it's in Abyssal nature to copy anything they have trouble beating." North Carolina frowns.

"Yes, but even though they've made combat forms that resemble shipgirls, they have never made a completely 1:1 copy of an existing one... until now." The Admiral's expression darkens. "This would indicate that the Abyssals are making innovations of their own."

"Well that's why I'm here!" Paz chirps.

"We'll get to you later." The Admiral nods and turns to Mulberry. "Do you have any input on this?"

"If I were you..." Mulberry frowns. "I would start checking the location of shipwrecks, make sure they're still there. It's just a hunch, but I don't want to make any guesses until I know for sure."

"Noted. Once we have assets freed up." The Captain nods. "Now to our other matter."

The Captain then steps up to Paz, who looks at him curiously with that innocent expression of hers.

"Pacifica, we've been told that you're able to change the composition of your Rig at will. Is that true?"

"Ummmm, yup!" Pacifica confirms, starting to sound a bit more uncertain, as if she wasn't sure if she was supposed to answer that question or not.

"Can you tell us your full capabilities? How your Rig works?" The Captain continues.

"Ummm, ummm..." Paz looks away, nervous. "Mommy said I'm not supposed to talk about that..."

The Captain's expression doesn't change. It looks like he's determined to get answers.

These are not mutually exclusive, after all. Try offering a compromise--Paz gives the Captain and the Admiral a rundown, in general terms, of her capabilities, without getting into too much specifics. Just the stuff that they would Need To Know to properly employ her--after all, that's the basis of security, having both the clearance AND the need to know.

"Hey, Paz." You put a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "You can trust the Cap. He's actually a pretty nice guy under that mean old mug!"

"Um, well..." Paz hesitates.

"It's okay. I'm here with ya, okay? Besides, your Mom won't be angry if she doesn't know!"

"Um, okay." Paz nods and takes a breath. "W-well, my Rig can take any configuration based on a number of pre-set loadouts, with allowances for me to customize my configuration as the situation demands. At least, that's what Mommy tells me."

"And did she ever tell you how it worked?" You ask.

"Nope!" Paz shakes her head. "Mommy never told me, and I never really thought to ask!"

"Interesting." The Captain frowns. "Vahlen has certainly outdone herself this time."

"Um, I just got another call from the eggheads." Sam butts in. "They're asking when Paz is being brought back in."

"They don't know she's here right now?" You raise an eyebrow.

"We just didn't tell them all of the facts." The Admiral shrugs. "But we can keep her hidden away from them forever."

Damn, who knew what would happen when she returns to Vahlen...?

"I think Paz should stay with us." You argue. "I don' feel comfortable just sending her back to Vahlen, you know?"

"That would mean going against the Science Division." The Captain frowns. "Admiral, are you sure about this?"

"The Science Division certainly is a powerful faction with powerful backers." The Admiral sighs. "They're not going to take something like this lightly. Assuming they'll even agree to such a thing, they'll certainly want to ask something in return."

"I don't like bringing this up, but shouldn't we at least bring Vahlen into this discussion?" North Carolina suggests. "If there's anybody that can sway the higher ups, it would be her, assuming we can bring HER around."

"Umm, ummm..." Paz frowns, getting more and more confused. "I think it would be cool to stay with Big Sis... but I'm not so sure about leaving Mommy..."

"Why? Mommy's not so bad!" Paz pouts. "She's nice to me and gives me all kinds of toys to play with!"

"She's on her way here noooow." Sam warns.

"Thank you Sam." The Admiral nods.

It's then that Vahlen enters, still dressed in biohazard gear as she was no doubt overseeing the recovery of Abyssal corpses and remains. There were no shortage of those in Singapore at the moment.

"Mommy!" Paz dashes over and hugs the scientist.

"You did a good job, Pacifica." Vahlen smiles warmly as she pats Paz on the head.

"Mommy, Mommy, Big Sis Hoel wants me to stay with her!" Paz says excitedly.

"I suppose I shouldn't be surprised." Vahlen signs as she sees the people present. "And... Big Sis Hoel...?"

Vahlen looks to you, and then to Paz, and the realization dawns upon her face.

"Ah, I should have foreseen this." Vahlen sighs.

"You should know what this is about, then." The Captain says.

"A custody battle." Vahlen shakes her head. "And you want me to convince my superiors to allow this to happen?"

"Can it be done?" The Admiral asks.

Vahlen looks to Paz, and then to you.

"I suppose that I can spin this as acquiring additional data on how Pacifica's social interactions may affect her performance." Vahlen sighs. "But I must insist that all of Pacifica's maintenance be handled by me personally. Much of her inner workings are still need to know and Shen does not have the required clearance."

Paz has given some indication of knowing that her Mommy does some fucked up things and being at least somewhat disturbed by it. She appears to have a solid enough sense of morality that learning exactly what horrible things her Mommy does should turn her against the cunt, as it has with every character and reader who isn't a sociopath.

People in abusive relationships are often reluctant to leave or overtly acknowledge the bad things about their abyser, especially when it's a parent abusing their child and the kid has no comprehension that what the parent does to them is abnormal or wrong.

We'll have to break her out of Vahlen's grip one finger at a time.

"Okay!" Paz says happily as she gives her "mother" a hug.

Vahlen returns it in the most awkward way possible, apparently not used to close physical contact. It was actually kind of funny to see.

"But do not expect the Science Division to take this lying down." Vahlen warns as she stands back up. "I wager that will try to leverage a 'favor' out of you, so stay on our guard."

And with that, Vahlen makes her exit.

That went much smoother than you thought it would.
