"Black Hearts. Cold Steel. Dark Deeds."

These are the words of the Black Company, the infamous band of mercenaries that has been on one side or the other of every major conflict on the continent since its founding.
The Company has seldom cared who they fight for or the cause so long as they are paid, and paid well, when the killing work is done. Though they may be considered by some to be little more than glorified brigands, it cannot be said that the Black Company is not good at what they do.

Recently the Company has taken up a contract with a new employer, one more powerful than any that have come before. An employer with endless ambition, as well as the means and lack of moral scruples needed to pursue it. An employer that pays well...

Recap
Reinforcements have arrived! If only that were unequivocally good news. Having recently finished pacifying Tassenland, the major North-Eastern Province of the Neumunster Empire, this collection mercenaries, cultists, conscripts and vampires are Trouble with a capital T.

Kresden has been captured. You've managed to prevent your own troops tearing it apart in the process. Now if you can prevent these reinforcements doings the same and bring them to heel, you could project force across the whole of the Northern Provinces. Not bad for a few stray Merc platoons.

Strategically things could be looking up, but the traitor in your ranks and lack of news from the main body of the Company that has you worried.

Let's do this
>>
So, how's it going?
>>
>>1128653
Somewhere North of Oxenfurt Bridge, and South of Kresden
”Captain!” The Skald Lieutenant ‘Black Ear’ bursts into the command tent.

The cobalt maned Black Company Captain ‘Cutthorat’ Kiranova doesn’t spare a glance from her maps at his entry.

”LT ‘Black Ear’, word’s just come in from the 10th Rangers. Elven guerrillas have them pinned down by the riverside, I want the 12th and 13th Cavalry to brush off their attackers and bring them back in.”

”Cav’s gone.” Kiranova looks up at that, causing ‘Black Ear’ to flinch. ”Was just about to tell you so, Captain. Chevalisse Knight’s caught them less than a league out from the main force, dead to the last man. The 1st and 6th Infantry made it back through, but they’re pretty badly mauled.”

The Captain’s face doesn’t betray a hint of panic, Kiranova has never been one to rush into anything. Where another commander might waste time wondering how the hell the Free Alliance mustered a force here when beset on the other fronts, the Captain is thinking solutions first.

”Sound the retreat.”

”What about the Rangers?”

Another pause, this one longer.

”If the Chevalisse Paladins are on the field there instead of our own Calvary then the Rangers are already dead or might as well be. We need to save what we can, not lose more trying to save what we can’t.”

”Our Employer won’t like it.”

[/blue]”Our Employer will like losing this war even less. If the army doesn’t withdraw now there won’t be one this time tomorrow.”[/blue] A dangerous glint appears in those cold eyes. ”I am not in the habit of repeating myself, Lieutenant. Sound. The. Retreat.”

Kresden, Late-Afternoon, Town Guard Barracks Room

”Don’t get me wrong, the boss has seen us through some tight spots alright. But he’s still fekkin crazy. I mean, -this- is crazy right?“

Trooper ‘Smiles’, perhaps now the ugliest Wildborn brute you’ve ever heard of with his permanent crooked leer, gives a non-committal grunt as he draws a blade at least a head taller than you. It’s notched and wrought from dull iron, but you don’t fancy getting in the way of it all the same.

Trooper Caroline ‘Joker’ Schuster always had a bigmouth, so it’s little surprise that she’s unaware you can hear every word she says in the guard’s barracks room as your favoured 1st Squad goes about tightening straps, sharpening steel and, in a few instances, not-so-subtly supplementing their rations with copious amounts of garlic. They’re supposed to be your honour guard for your first meeting with the Vampire coven, and it’s no shock they’re not exactly ecstatic about it.

”Uh… matey?” Trooper Vendis Durvano has spotted you, but by then it’s too late to stop ‘Joker’ on her rant.

”Hold on, ‘matey’, I’m not finished. Let’s say, theoretically, they decide to eat him and, by extension, us. We’re talking about a dozen of these things, right? How is our presence there going to change the outcome one bit?”

----------------------------------

>”You’re there to look pretty, ‘Joker’. And to leave the talking to me. We’re not going to pick a fight, just making sure they know the ground rules for their stay here.” [Experience]

>”You’re there because I said so. They’re not invincible. Cold steel might not do the trick by itself, but decapitation, staking and stuffing them with garlic will.” Or at least, it -should-. [Elite]

>”You’re there to make me look pretty, ‘Joker’. And you of all people should appreciate the irony of visiting a Vampire for dinner.” A poor jest sure, but nervous laughter is better than just plain nervous. [Clever]

>”I didn’t realise you’ve moved so far up the ranks as to be qualified to question orders, Trooper. Shut up and get a move on.” Troopers talk shit, buts it your job to reprimand them all the same. [Courage]

“You’re there to make me look pretty, ‘Joker’. And you of all people should appreciate the irony of visiting a Vampire for dinner.”

”Yeah you don’t see me fekkin laughing none, do ya?” Trooper ‘Joker’ mutters imperceptibly under her breath, but the atmosphere is lightened some.

”Be of uplifted spirits, Human-Schuster. I am told Human dining entails looking at a menu, categorised by number.” Trooper ‘Smiles’ has gotten remarkably good at talking without much in the way of lips.

”Menu? Trooper ā la carte?” Corporal ‘Jack’ Marcus comments off-handily as he tightens his gauntlet.

”Ah I think maybe they are having the Vendis Venison, extra-rare!” Trooper Nissar Belhamun looks absolutely delighted to actually understand and participate in the squad jokes for once.

”Stow that talk, landlubber.” The ex-pirate Durvano scowls, but it’s a good-natured sort of scowl.

You grin as you leave them to their banter. It’s times like these you miss the rank-and-file days. At least then you knew the shit you put up with was mostly not your own fault.

Kid is busy with his (you assume) studies, Mask is watching over the Neumunster Prince, Bad Hand, and the Grenn ‘Pelt’ are tracking down the scent from the note, Hadrien is babysitting the rookie recruits and ASGORGA is Dark Father fekking knows where. That leaves you with Saint and Cairsun to flesh out your guard for the meeting with the bloodsuckers.

----------------------------------------

>On second thoughts, maybe hold off on this meeting with the Vamps for now. Talk to one of the other factions. The terrified townspeople, Turncoat veterans, Tassenland rookies and Cultists creeps are all problems as well. YOUR problems. [Clever]

>Your current complement of troops is fine. But you need to show these Vamps you have Balls of Brass, to let it be known by all that you’re the only Big Swinging Dick in town. Your troops will wait on parade outside while you enter the den. Alone. [Courage]

You suppose if you hadn’t already taken up residence in the Manor then it would have made a fine lair. As it is the coven of Vampires have moved into the Kresden library. Education always rubbed you the wrong way, books were too close to paperwork in your opinion. The library was probably already creepy enough without the discarded coffins stacked up everywhere. You count six, all empty. You know for a fact that there are more Vamps than that, but so far you only see their enthralled human servants, vacant-eyed and pale every one of them, and an extremely nervous looking librarian wearing ridiculous small spectacles.

”H-h-hello good sir, Sir Bartholomew’s Books and Tomes Repository, “K-k-knowledge is p-p-power”.

You spare him a pitying look before turning to one of the thralls, a pasty looking man dressed like a whore, or a bard’s impression of one. Clearly the depraved nature of the Vampyr extends beyond an unquenchable thirst for blood and penchant for garish fashion. You don’t know what ranking system, if any, works here so you address him as you would a civilian attaché.

”Excuse me, good evening there! I am looki-“

The thrall gives you a blank look and turns his back on your crew, opening a rusty gate that reveals a set of stairs. You can’t see the bottom of them.

Ignoring Trooper Schuster’s “Seriously?!” glare, you begin descend after the thrall downstairs. You make sure to have everyone grab a torch, you’re interrupted by Trooper ‘Saint’ nudging you on the shoulder.

”Sir?” Saint gives you a telling look, nodding at the terrified librarian dutifully manning the front counter as ghoulish-looking thralls lope around aimlessly.

”What?”

There’s that look again.

Remember, just because someone likes you doesn’t mean they’re not a traitor.

You ignore Saint’s glowing smile of approval as you give her the okay to send the . It didn’t look like he was Marked or anything, probably a bit skinny and sickly looking to be a Vampires first-choice in a town like this. You don’t doubt he wouldn’t have lasted long despite that.

You roll your eyes as the man’s relieved sobs echo when Saint gives him news of the sanctuary and sends him on his way.

”Doesn’t he know you’re supposed to be quiet in the fekkin library?” Trooper’Joker’ Schuster says venomously as she proceeds to spit on the library floor.

You glance at ‘Joker’ in surprise. ”You know about being in libraries? I thought you couldn’t read.”

”Oh? Stereotypical ignorant, ill-hitter-rate, country-girl, am I? Shame on you, bossman, perpetuatin’ the social stigma of the what-you-call-it and such.”

”…You can’t read.”

”Fek. Thought I had ya there, boss.”

You rightfully ignore her shit-stirring as Saint returns. ”All done, Trooper ‘Saint’? Got your daily good deed out of the way?”

‘Saint’ doesn’t roll her eyes like ‘Joker’, too disciplined, but she does smile happily enough to piss you off a little. ”Maybe I’ll have Kid draft up a new form. 'Daily Quota of Company Member Good Deeds Completion A-22'.”

At least it’s one piece of paperwork you think yourself unlikely to be filling out anytime soon.

Why the Kresden Library has access to an underground Crypt you can’t possibly comprehend. It’s not like the dead read, or at least it wasn’t the case when this place was first being built. The dead certainly might be inclined to reading now, you suppose.

As you proceed behind the silent thrall, feet sloshing in the occasional puddle of what you hope is water, you can see Saint smiling in the flickering torchlight.

”What is it?”

”It’s just… when I was a girl, I dreamed of joining the Heigelen Guard. Instead of babysitting one noble after the other to dinners, balls and plays, I dreamed of –real- work. Serving the Emperor and charging down morbid passages like this one to cleanse the enemies of Light with steel and righteous fury.” The Heigelen deserter looks at you with her ironic grin and angel eyes. ”And here I am, armed to the teeth and in a Vampire den. But for talking, not purging. It’s funny how things turn out.”[/blue]

”And instead of heroes you’ve got us.” You can see the irony in it, sure. Every Neumunster child fantasized about joining the Heigelen Guard, even orphans like yourself.

”You undersell yourself, sir. My definition of ‘hero’ has changed somewhat as of late.”

You chew on your words for a while, weighing what to say.

"Every noble knight and his horse has an opinion on what it means to be a hero, Saint. Slaying dragons, killing scores of less well-armed and trained opponents, dying in the stupidest way possible."

You stop walking and fix Trooper 'Saint' with a stare.

"That's horseshit, Trooper, and you need to know that. A hero has nothing to do with who you kill or how scared you are. It's not about staying braver five minutes longer than the rest, it's about keeping the rest alive for those five minutes longer. It's about getting the job done and making sure your brothers and sisters get out alive."

The squad is silent behind you in the crypts as you speak to Saint. The thrall is waiting impatiently ahead, but that creature can keep waiting. This is important.

"And if being a hero means something else..." You spit contemptuously as you turn to walk again. "...then the last thing we need is a Company of Heroes."

Saint is left standing there, mulling over what you said. If not for LCPL 'Jack' Marcus' gentle touch on her should she'd have probably kept thinking long after the squad passed her by.

I did say discussion was welcomed rather than an outright vote, so we'll get to that later.

As a heads up completing the Companion quest would give Saint back her powers anyway, the options merely mean what form that will take.

(A) Is her old faith, or some derivative/compromised version of it that allows her to reconcile herself with her current occupation. Will occasionally glow.

(B) Is her following you down the Dark Father path. Most combat orientated one. Probably dyes her hair too, I don't know.

(C) Is something else entirely. According to your talk with Cairsun (and you can talk to him and not actually go through with it of course) it can draw its powers from the Wild, from the Albani Runelords or something else entirely. The Isabella Clans, Ancient Dragons and forces behind the Rakasha Raj are all Powers as well, just not really at play on this continent much.

Anyway, moving on!

These two are dressed as if they were attending a ball that –might- turn into a battle. If you saw any mortal warrior wearing that you’d laugh in their face. But you’re not laughing now. You know that the lean, toned musculature is a lie. They are much much stronger than they look, plate armour is paper to them.

It doesn’t help that they’re beautiful. Why do they have to be so damn attractive? It’s clearly not lost on your troopers.

”By thunder, that is one fine wench.” Trooper Vendis Durvano whispers, apparently forgetting that Vamps have supernatural good hearing.

”Don’t be stupid you sea louse, they’ll eat you up as soon as- oh Damn. Hello there~” Trooper ‘Joker’ pauses from her rebuke to goggle at the other one, suddenly not so adverse to being chewed on by the tall, dark and handsome male specimen.

You on the other hand, are focusing on the mission.

”Rarely do we have delectable fare so bold as to deliver itself to us.” The female’s laughter is cruel, rich and intoxicating.

”Sister, please. We all serve the same Master.” The male rebukes her and gives you a smile that you suppose would be friendly if it didn’t highlight his sharp fangs so much. ”I am Lord Cesare Lorgia. I, and my sister Lady Teresa Lorgia, may speak for our fellows. How can we assist an esteemed officer of the Black Company?”

”Greeting, Lord and Lady Lorgia. I am Lieutenant ‘Prince’ of the 7th Kriegstrom Platoon, Black Company and…”

You don’t much care for elves, but one of their ‘Presidents’ (electing someone, what an odd notion) once had something wise to say. ‘Walk softly, and carry a massive sword’. In your opinion that’s the wise way to approach this. You decide to suss out just what the Vampires think they can get away with.

”…I am here to discuss how we might co-operate to facilitate your presence in this town.” All sickly smile and placating tone you are. The very image of the lickspittle.

”Oh my dear… ‘Lieutenant Prince’ was it? Such an odd title. We appreciate your desire to accommodate us, but my brother and I can assure you that we can find our own food.” Lady Lorgia licks one of her fangs. ”It is in abundance here.”

”Sister, we must be more considerate to the poor Lieutenant.” The brother with the dark curls is obviously playing Good-Bailiff to the sisters Hungry-Bailiff. ”I am sure I can convince our number to refrain from preying on your own soldiers. A mere score townsfolk a night seems fair, yes? Maybe two-score, it’s been a long journey. Of course, you won’t mind if a few of the more strapping Tassenland boys go missing, would you? Some of them are quite delectable.”

”That’s not good enough, Lord Lorgia. This town is under my protection. My orders were very clear. Take Kresden. Intact.” Now you –know- they’re taking the piss. A vampire needs maybe one feed a night, surely, otherwise they’d never last. You drop the nice-guy act. ”Even if you didn’t depopulate the town in a couple of months at that rate, the panic and inevitable riot would do the rest. 3 bodies a night, my choice, criminals and other undesirables only. You can subsist on your thralls if you need more.”

”Oh but there is a certain priestess I spotted that I simply –must- have.” Lord Lorgia’s smile is increasingly sharp. ”That simply won’t do, why we might be forced to-“

”I have a Dragon.”

”I beg your pardon?!” Lady Lorgia gasps indignantly.

”Quiet sister.” Lord Lorgia snaps. ”He speaks the tongue.”

”So? He’s bluffing. Preposterously so! It’s not even possible for a mortal to-”

Your squad is on edge, hands on weapon. Only now do you realise that it appears to them as if you and the Lorgias have started snarling and hissing at each other in between snippets of conversation.

”It’s never been done by a mortal before, which is not the same thing at all.” Lord Lorgia has an altogether different look as he regards you now with new eyes. Less hungry and smug, more cautious and calculating. You like seeing the cautious look. The calculating? Not so much. ”It is possible… theoretically. We know that an Unbound One has made a place in its camp…”

”Bah! Bound to our Master maybe, not this one. To think this bloodbag can strut in here and ask us to-“

”I am not –asking-. I am -commanding-. If you cannot tell the difference, I shall teach you. Gladly.”

The two Vampires watch you carefully. If they are discussing anything, you can’t hear it. You can feel the eyes of many others on you though. Time to find out whether you are the fox in the henhouse, or the rabbit in the snakepit.

>1 Success

”Such a lesson will not be necessary, Lieutenant. We have an agreement, 3 bodies tonight. Criminals of your choice.”

Lord Lorgia makes a gesture with a flick of his wrist and shadows that you hadn’t realised were that closes dart away into the blackness faster than your eye can track. There must have been at least ten of them waiting there, some within arms reach. The Lady Lorgia fixes a look that could kill as she retreats into the blackness, you’ve certainly moved to the top of her ‘bite in the back’ list.

”I must say, Liuetenant, that is quite a claim you have made. An Unbound One has not been shackled to anyone’s will, much less a mortals, for several hundred years. I would be most interested to see such an amazing display of power firsthand.” Lord Lorgia’s smile is good-natured and sincerely… voracious. Perhaps tomorrow morning at the Dawn? Before the Sun takes its toll of my kin’s sensitivies…”

”Of course, Lord Lorgia. Thank you for your time.”

”Oh the pleasure is all mine, ‘Prince’.” The vampiric leader chuckles as he turns away, beckoning a drooling thrall after him. ”What a fascinating scent that mortal has…”

The walk up the stairs from the Crypt is made in uncomfortable silence. As expected, it is Trooper ‘Joker’ Schuster who breaks it.

”What. The fek. Was that.” the scarred side of her face scrunching up in an apprehensive frown. ”Was you having a bleedin’ conversation back there or a hissing contest?”

”Heh. ‘Hissing’ contest.” Trooper Vendis Durvano snorts.

”Fek your shit up if you don’t cram it, Vendis, swear to the Saint, see if I don't you…”

”Shut up. Both of you.” LCPL ‘Jack’ Marcus doesn’t use his drillyard whipcrack of a voice, but it works just as well. He turns to you as you step outside the Library. ”That didn’t look like ‘Yes, sir. No, sir. Three wagons full, sir.’ to me, sir. What now?”

Of course not. Battle buddies in different units die all the time, wouldn't be in your control at all. I wouldn't put it past 'Prince' (or you lot) to still blames yourselves for it somehow anyway.

The death of Count Vermillio had far-reaching consequences, both in the politics surrounding the Necromancer's supporters and how the campaign has been conducted. Sister Syka is an evangelist, not a military commander.

Alcohol.

Start up a cult for him (offer him the services of the people who otherwise would have been eaten by the Vampires.) Like, would you rather DEFINITELY be eaten by a Vampire, or MAYBE eaten by a Dragon (whom we have some control over.) - sell it to both sides as something WE are giving them.

Offer Saint's virginity. JK.

Offer our anal virginity.

Challenge the Dragon to a contest. Ideally wits. Riddles are classic (instant fight about riddles in quests). Or we could go with tactics. Or lore.

Talk to Scribe # about how to do so.

Dragon seemed to like the idea of fighting a challenge. At the very least if we can't bring ASGORGA under our direct command we should set them up as rivals/threats to each other.
If we badly fuck up the "taming" we must make the two sides hostile to each other so they both have something bigger to worry about than us.

If we really, really, reeeeeally fuck up we always have the Neumunster Prince to offer ASGORGA. I know he wanted the Emperor but his heir has to be worth something right? This should be a last resort, "Please don't kill us and this entire town Mr. Dragon."

He's bargained with us before, but the Sparkles can speak the Black Tongue too so they'll know what we're saying to sulfur-breath when we summon him. We can't do that in front of them.

We HAVE to talk to ASGORGA before the meet'n greet with the Vamps.
>>
>>1132277
>This should be a last resort, "Please don't kill us and this entire town Mr. Dragon."

We don't ask him anything. We offer him as an equal. The second we act as anything less we WILL be.

>>

I think we should be looking at it as less dominance, more 'striking a working relationship'.

From what I remember of our last interaction with him, the dragon was pretty dull(in an adorably naive sense that he was easily misdirected), and we had a rather easy time convincing him to go kill grenn instead of burning the town.
A good mix of flattery about how he's the greatest, and a bit of emphasis that, he should let us do the thinking about what he fights, because thinking is hard. Let US do the hard part so he can have more time to doing the fun part of killing.

"It's a big world world out there as you know, and there's so much to prove your dominance over that you may end up wasting your time on inferior things i'll tell you what, you let ME find you a good few things to assert dominance over for you!"
"Why? Because I happen to respect you, and rather than disrespect a guy I find quite enjoyable to be around by giving them orders, I'd rather help you out by suggesting things you may like to kill"

Do this while swinging an arm over his neck and sweeping our free hand across the horizon
"We're, nice, AND wise like that, draggo, and in return for doing boring work for you?! You can help make my boring work easier so I can go assert my dominance over things with this crappy human 'politics' faster, this lets me find more fights for you, and even a few fights for myself too, it's a mutually beneficial sort of deal, see?"

I think we should bring up that while he's the Company's "secret weapon"... a weapon is all he is. He has no input in our plans, no stake in our winnings. If he swore the Oath and joined the Brotherhood, well then... A Dragon who's not a Brother is simply a tool. A Dragon who IS will be Captain on day, if only because he outlives everyone else.

>A good mix of flattery about how he's the greatest, and a bit of emphasis that, he should let us do the thinking about what he fights

Impress upon him the idea that if he just flies around burning and eating everything he sees, everyone will think that he is a dumb beast. If he works with us we will do all the hard work of choosing his targets. If he let us do that we will make him the most feared and awed dragon that has ever lived, it will show his power, sophistication and what a truly terrifying tactical mind he has.

Work with us and countless people of all races will bow their head and worship his name!

It seems like people are set on finding another way, not just the middle way.

I suggest something along the lines of this. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virt%C3%B9

>Virtù is a concept theorized by Niccolò Machiavelli, centered on the martial spirit and ability of a population or leader,
but also encompassing a broader collection of traits necessary for maintenance of the state and "the achievement of great things."

It could work with the non-idealistic heroism we have got going, where we acknowledge neither sinners or saints, but Mankind (all the weird fantasy variants included) and the Sisyphean struggle, which is life.

Except the elves, fek those knife-ears!

We will be his Manager. Revealing him only for the most dramatic of impacts, sealing his position both in our Company, but also in the History Books.

We should get the Black Company archivist to meet the Dragon to record his grand deeds.

All of these.

Point out that given the nature of his contributions, he wouldn't be expected to share loot like the other members of the Company, but would be considered the commander of his own force.

Also backing this idea

> Talk to Scribe # about how to do so.

I also forget his actual name. But he seemed to have that whole "Demonic possession" thing going on.

Maybe we could bind him to the company in obedience for as long as the company survives, in return for getting him to possess the Dragon?

Page #136 isn't with us, he's with the main force of the Company.

I'd be careful voting for Kid, we all know FQM is taking notes on who we don't want killed the most.

I think it would be best to point out how the company is older than most dragons alive today. That we don't need him so much as he needs us because if he's on his own either dragon hunters will never stop chasing him or the necromancer will break him to his will. And under the necromancer he could end up as not much more than a glorified guard dog. However with the company there will always be another fight, and his infamy will grow endlessly.

> r the necromancer will break him to his will. And under the necromancer he could end up as not much more than a glorified guard dog.

YOU HAVE CHOSEN: INSULT THE DRAGON.

BAD END.

A better option would be to imply the Vampires are disrespectful of the Dragon, that they thought he wouldn't be willing to throw down with them, and that they're testing him. Ideally, we could tell him that as the town is under the control of the company, if the Dragon is part of the company (through you) then he owns a share in the town.

And that the Vampires are trying to take his rightful share.

I like it, though using persuasion again will futher increase the DC if we ever want to try to dominate ASGORA.
>>
>>1139935
We should Dominate the dragon not persuade him.
>>
>>1139935
Domination is the only choice.

It is a fucking Dragon, last time we could offer him the Emperor as a snack and we set him free. We don't really have that much to offer him right now and he is not chained underground with the desire to roam free.
