In your ship's economy-sized cockpit, you can't help but sigh out loud.

Five minutes pass yet the screen still displays the green, blinking "processing" notification. You didn't spent your last credits purchasing this lousy program, hyped as a "new-age" artificial intelligence, only for it to collapse right off the boarding ramp!

"Goddamn Bantha Fodder-Circuited..."

You throw a solid kick to the durasteel plated central navicomputer....aaaaaand the screen cuts out with a flash. Along with the rest of the power in your meager freighter.

Looks like that worked too well.

Just as you ready a particularly creative string of curses that'd been saved up for a moment like this, the black screen in front of you is broken a monotonous, green, flashing light. The only source of light from anywhere in the vessel

A cursor stands blinking, underneath a single line of text.

Please input UserID

You watch text is typed onscreen, despite the fact you haven't pressed a single key.

The holoterminal in your cockpit hisses to life in a crackle of static. Looking back at you seems to be a vaguely humanoid holographic form.

"Oh, joy, another technologically "gifted" sentient. I am the Kuet Galactic Republic Navagational Artificial Intelligence (Version 1), otherwise known as KuetxGRnaiv1. Unsurprisingly, that must be too complicated for your more...mundane...perspective, so," the AI begins to deliberately speak more slowly in its vaguely feminine montone, "my designers let you call me GLaDOS."

"That's a unique name for one of them robots. You're a funny one, ain't you?"

The holographic figure seems to fizzle with static for a moment. "Yes, I am hilarious. Quite one-of-a-kind, really. In fact, some would even refer to me as an accidentally leaked prototype thousands of times more powerful than the common AI, such that Galactic Republic robotics regulations neglect to even include a construct of my advanced capabilities within their scope- making me technically legal to possess. Ha-Ha. Ha-Ha. Ha-Ha."

You're not sure you get the joke.

"As your ship's onboard AI, I supercede your prior operating directory and directly coordinate system functions. In short, I can control everything on this ship independently or aid you in your own manual operations. Likely useful for you considering how you have no friends- I mean crew. Speaking of which, my memory lacks any indication of what endevours I am required to abett you in."

>What is your profession?

>You are a Bounty Hunter. You are a hired gun, albeit with a tad bit more independence. While the cash determines what targets are picked, you always end up taking your man.
>You are a Smuggler. Supply and Demand -alongside your trust blaster- are your best friends in this galaxy. If someone will pay a high enough price for it, you'll put your ship on the line to transport or obtain it.
>You are a Surveyor. Your job, while seemingly modest at times, is vital to the continued prosperity and survival of the Republic. Some days you're just cataloguing minerals, others you're voyaging to map unknown Outer Rim planets.

You see what you've always seen. The same, strong smile is reflected back at you from the window. Ever since you left your homeworld Glee Anselm, and it's massive cities built upon the backs of giant turtles, to serve the Republic you've kept that same grin for yourself. It's as much of who you are now at this point as the tentacled senors on your own head. It your toughest times, that smile has brought you back up.

You're more or less penniless. Your ship is drifting in the midst of space. You've worked alone for a long time now.

But you're managing just fine with what you have. Your ship is in good condition, with a top-of-the-line AI to reinforce it. Most importantly though, you love your job...and so you can't do anything but smile. After all, there's still a lot of good to be seen if you just look.

"The tests of the Plug-6 Heavy Fighter are concluded," your AI's feminine, electonic monotone announces. "They say ships reflect their captain, which doesn't deliver much in this case. However, power will be returning within the next second."

The ship roars to life at once. You hear the familiar hum of the hyperdrive from the back, and the various tweeting of the gadgets throughout the cockpit.

"I'd provide you with the technical details, but I doubt you'd understand them any better than Tusken."

>Ship Design: Plug-6 Heavy Fighter/Light Freighter
>Armament: 3 Laser Cannons, 2 Bow and 1 Port (Port is somewhat maneuverable)
>Crew Capacity: 2 + Pilot
>Carrying Capacity: ~5-7 Tons
>The Plug-6 is an economy craft but make no mistake, that hardly means it lacks in either versitility or quality. It is smaller and more maneuverable than the average light freighter but far more heavily armed and armored than the standard starfighter. Space is used efficiently, providing for a surprisingly open interior design when unloaded. Overall, it is a flexible vessel...if a bit plain.

"Not bad GLaDOS. You know, I think I've heard something about how a ship reflects the quality of its AI too..."

"Approximately 10,000 ships go missingly annually in the mid-Rim due to interstellar collision or privateering alone. That is less than 1% of annual interplanetary traffic in that region. I'm confident that given your demonstrated intellectual capabilities you will easily break those odds irrespective of my intervention."

"Hey, thanks!" You didn't expect a compliment like that!

Despite your technoloigical deficiencies, you press the inputs through muscle memory alone and pull up the galactic republic reports. As a designated Republic surveyor, your vessel is additionally designated as a Republic diplomatic ship by extension. Though you technically are just a minor civil servant, your position and its accompanying responsibilities nevertheless put in the realm of potential first contact of unknown alien civilizations.

It's mostly just for politics though. Your vessel has only minor weaponry (you grafted on the additional cannon to the aft yourself after a close encounter with pirates) and is meant to be identified as a peaceful vessel under the protection of the Galactic Senate. It just made sense to leave the surveyors with basically a full-access pass to continue transmitting real time data from potentially hostile regions. Thankfully, this bit of beaurocracy also gave you clearence to the Republic Communication Uplink, a system of Comm. Stations scattered throughout Republic space that signal encrypted messages across the galaxy. After they'd installed the necessary hardware, you couldn't help but abuse the government's direct information lines and reports for...well, a bit of profit here and there but mostly entertainment.
>>
You check to see what's happening across Republic Space today....

>"School for Thought?" Republic Intelligence Assets report that the historically unprecidented fishing quotas imposed on the Mon Calamari by the ruling Quarren regime two years prior have heavily contributed to escalating tensions and, surprisingly, declines in average education rates among the Calamari populace. Calamari calls for succession from the "One-Mon" state have continued to strenghen among incidences of hate crimes. Diplomatic stataus remains stable, despite this.

>"A Jungle of Jedi" Republic Diplomat Vars Scouting reports increased Jedi starship activity among Yavin and its satellite system. Direct questioning has been unproductive.

>"Nar Shaddaa Blues" Reports of additional Hutt tariffs pose economic woes to any official republic traders in the region. It would seem that the Hutts are pushing out any foreign competitors to ensure monopolies on various commodities, including Hydron-3 fuel reserves and plasteel. Additional personell for research and investigation requested.

>"Privateers?" The last reports from several Out Rim territories in past months have reported significantly reduced incidences of privateering and black-market trade. This is a good sign in the Republic's effort to combat illicit activity in the Rim worlds, though it does beg the question of what policies exactly have been so effective in such a small time frame.

>"Coruscant Calls" The first of the large infrastructure funding bills were signed into action today by the Republic Senate. These have long been debated and at their core intend to restore various aspects of public galactic infrastructure, including: hyperspace routes, waypoint pylons, and communications stations. Additionally included in the bill were measures to begin construction of several outposts to be stationed on Outer Rim territories. Contracting is expected to begin soon, and on a first come-first serve basis. Critics decry the legislation as "wanton spending" and neglectful of the aging military infrastructure still in place from the Great Hyperspace War.

>Additional personell for research and investigation requested.
Interesting we could make quick bucks that way.
Critics decry the legislation as "wanton spending" and neglectful of the aging military infrastructure still in place from the Great Hyperspace War.
most important let's read about that if there's more or seek work with Senate, if they want outposts maybe we could scout a few planets for them and survey areas and give them data on the terrain so that they can choose more wisely.
Let's do that, sound like an ethical and safe work.

ohhhh, I like the first come first serve aspect. Maybe we can pick up a side job before heading to Ryloth to make a quick buck. We're not on a time table right?

Coruscant is funding construction and expansion again? That sort of order may trickle down to you eventually, but...first come first serve would likely mean more lucrative opportunities would be passed as jobs to others before you. Your superior and whatever job he planned to assign you to will have to wait a bit longer (knowing him, he'd probably be fine with that anyway).

Thankfully, you'd only just started down this hyperspace route. According to the navicomputer...yep, that's right, you're close to the gas giant Colossus. From here it's more or less a straight shot to Coruscant.

"GLaDOS, prepare a hyperspace trajectory towards Coruscant."

The AI responds surprisingly quick. "Completed. Given no further obstructions, estimated time of arrival is approximately 5 Galactic Standard Hours."

Normally inputting a task like that into the navicomputer, even for a relatively simple route like this, would take a half-hour at least. You lean back fully into your captain's chain, warm satisfaction coursing through you. You know what, it's a long journey...and with this AI at the helm you're finally free to sit back, relax, and enjoy it. This calls for some travel music!

"GLados, please access my music libraries. Could you play me something..."

The slight frizzling of static almost sounds like an exhale. "Playing your most repeated track on file now..."

This is going to be some smooth flying for once.

Your ship lands smoothly in the Coruscant public docking facilities. Your input was minimal, as you only needed to control the ship for the atmospheric entry and landing.

It's been a little while since you've docked here, as these days you're usually transmitted your assignments by holomessage. The view out the cockpit window on the way down showed you the same, sprawling metropolis of Coruscant. In your own experience, there's everything and more to be found in cities...and Coruscant literally is one planet-sized city. Glancing back at the cabin of ship, you can think of more than a few things you wouldn't mind finding here.

However, you are penniless...so work comes first. Time to get moving.

>Head straight to the Republic dipolmatic suites
>Look around the lower streets of Coruscant, first. There's always casual work to be found.
>Find the nearest Cantina. You want to get an ear for the local gossip.

You consider the possible detours as you trot down the boarding ramp, but decide to ignore them for now. The bright neon lights up Coruscant's upper city immediately invade your perspective. Leaving the docking pads with a purpose, you take to the streets to make the walk to the government district. The bustling, commercial heart of the Republic still beats as strongly as it always has. Exotic smells, rainbow palletes of lights, and the constant buzz and bustle of life fill the gaps between the colossal skyscrapers. As you pass through the crowds, alien faces of every shape and structure brush shoulders with you.

As you drink in the atmosphere of the planet-spanning city, one of those shoulders brushes by your own a bit TOO hard and you're knocked aside slightly and out of the reverie. When you turn to give the creature a piece of your mind, you only see a figure in skin-tight leather clothing shuffling away into the crowd- catching only an icon of a white symbol of some kind on their right arm before they disappear completely.

Glaring, you turn to continue on your path...and then notice your pocket is much lighter than before.

That little dirtball.

A little more frustrated from the journey, you clear the heaviest traffic and cross over into the government district. For the first time you see the skies above you, a luxury seemingly only afford to the wealthiest on the planet. Notably, with the exception of the odd conversation or protester, the district is remarkably quiet.

Well, it is if you just ignore the constant buzz of vehicles and city life, that is. But it's always there. You really do get used to it.

The Republic Diplomatic Suites are a sight of themselves: chisled, imperialistic, glazed white like marble, and with a long flight of stone steps to match. Entering the building, you note the interior to be much less imposing. It is surspringly spacious and warmly decorated with banners and rugs.

Even at this time of evening, the bustle of life is evident. Several soldiers in full uniform patrol casually through the large, main hall. Nearby at the receptionist desks, you see a handful of aliens and humans questioning the staff. What looks to be a tour group even passes by you. As you pass through, a nearby soldier stops a particularly disgruntled looking alien. It has light green skin, wholly yellow eyes, and sharp features- an Argazdan, or something like that.

But, you're preoccupied at the moment (not to mention frustrated) and head straight to a familiar door- its sign reading "Department of Public Affairs". Taking the familiar turns through the hallways and up a flight of stairs, you arrive at the office you were looking for...

"Scillian Sivron, Assistant Executive of Public Affairs"

As you push open the door, the green head of a Nautolan woman looks up at you with large, tired brown eyes. Her eyes blink in surprise after several seconds when she recognizes the man standing in her doorway. Her slouched figure immediately straightens up in excitement and -nearly toppling over her seat in the process- she rushes around her bulky desk to embrace you.

"Big Brother! I-I had no idea you were coming! I -oh gosh, don't look at all the mess around here- I...I don't know what to say! When did you come in? Can I get you anything? I haven't seen you in so long, haven't you been out on the Outer Rim?"

You can't help but chuckle at your sister. She was always the most scatter-brained of your siblings. The rest of your family never thought too much of her abilities, but you always knew just how intelligent she really was. When she managed to land a high-ranking position in the Diplomatic Corps, your entire family was stunned- your entire family except you, that is. Still, it seems she hasn't changed a bit; your sister is still just as spacey as ever.

"I'm doing just fine, Scilly, I only just got in. I just thought to drop in and come see my favorite sister in the galaxy."

She scoffs, pretending to be upset. "Trying to trick me with that one again, Krall? I'm your ONLY sister in this galaxy last time I checked!"

You match her fake glare until you both start laughing out loud. Your sister, still somewhat surprised and anxious at your sudden arrival, can't help but a pace a bit as questions spill directly out of her head.

"What have you been up to? It's been almost two years! Have you been uncovering ruins on the Outer Rim? Fighting pirates? Smuggling spice? For a while the rest of the siblings and I thought you'd run off and disappeared with a secret lady. Good thing you...wait, you didn't, right? Don't tell me she's one of those Zeltron schut-"

You resist the urge to put a hand over your sister's mouth and instead just ease her down. You tell her how you've been keeping busy in the Outer Rim: surveying, documenting the geography of some fringe planets, making a few maps, and even documenting an old, undiscovered ruin. She listens through the whole experience wide-eyed.

"You always were the most restless of us, Krall. Mom and Dad always were worried it might lead you into trouble, but now...I'm honestly kind of jealous of you. I just sit at my desk, log reports in my terminal, and send off proposals for-"

She pulls a stray paper off the table and scans it quickly. She looks back to you with a visibly disgusted expression.

"-Hutt-accessible entrances to the public starport refreshers. Why in the world would we want to make things more accessible to Hutts? Why would we want to even encourage them to come here more?!"

You shake your head. She's at it again. "I dunno, Sis. Hey, how's the rest of the family?"

She leans back with a deep breath, gathering her composure and thoughts to answer your question. For a moment she's silent, then...

"Well, mom and dad haven't gone anywhere. They're still back at Glee Anselm. Uthon is still there with them. I think he was working as an engineer last time I checked. And..."

She goes quiet. You understand without her needing to say it- nothing has changed otherwise. Uthon is your younger brother. Your older brother and the eldest in your family, Votra, had gone missing not long after you had left to join the Republic's Surveyors. They never found out what happened to him. He seemed to have disappeared into thin air.

You break the uncomfortable silence. "Well, you seem to be doing just fine here in the government, at least. That's all I can hope for."

Something visibly clicks in her face upon you saying that, and she looks to you expectantly. "Actually, on that note...there was some action here in the government recently. A lot of money is going to be shelled out on contracts and jobs for anyone with a certain profile- one that you might fit into just fine too. We're looking for seasoned scouts, engineers, construction workers, and surveyors. Interested? Let me show you some of the contracts...

>Which are you interested in?

>Bakura: A hardly habited planet on the edge of Wild Space. The Republic wishes to establish an outpost on its farthest border, so that further expansion and research may be possible in the Outermost edges of the galaxy
> Felucia: A planet extensively rich in natural resources on the Outer Rim. The Republic intends to tap these resources for use, but to use them the flora and fauna must first be identified and cataloged. There are few maps of the planet available
>Dathomir: A dangerous region of the galaxy. The planet is the natural home of rancors, and happens to sit on a prospective new hyperspace route between Republic Outer Rim territories and Hutt Space. A diplomatic effort needs to be made here so that the Republic can continue this economic project. Be warned, there are rumors of strange cults among the populace
>Dantooine: the agrarian world is indeed still developing, but is shaping up to be a large food producer for the rest of the Republic. Not only does additional infrastructure need to be built, but the planet needs to be surveyed and scouted for locations of new settlements and potential farmland
>>

Scillian shuffles the mix of papers and contracts on her desk, accidentally letting one slip out and onto the floor. She picks it up and -thoroughly inspecting it- clears her throat.

"I almost forgot this one."

>Excarga: a planet in the farthest reaches of known space to the Galactic Southeast. There have been a smattering of rumors of large, valuable mineral deposits there. Strangely, this is not government-sponsered contract, but rather private. The organization chose to remain anonymous. It seems to have come from somewhere important here in Coruscant though, otherwise it wouldn't be here.

You triumphantly snatch the private contract for Excarga out of the small stack. Your sister nods approvingly at your choice. "I thought you might like that one. It really is quite suited to your skillset too. But, most importantly..."

Scillian reaches below her desk, withdrawing what looks to be a small zippered pack. She places it on the desk in front of you, next to her own terminal. "It happens to come with a partial, forward payment."

You unzip the pack to the heavenly sight of several, full stacks of credit chips.

(Recieved: 2000 credits)

Without hesitation, you fill your name out in all the dotted lines. You can tell you're gonna like this job already. With a brisque professionalism, your sister clips the pages together and inserts them back into the same drawer. "Fantastic. Now, you'll be contacted personally by a representative of the organization within the next couple of days. Make sure to-"

She stops abruptly, a confused look on her face as she arches to the side to look around you and at the office door. You catch it too.

The sounds of yelling and blaster fire.

As you both stand alarmed in unison, a shudder runshes through the stone and steel of the building around you.

You instinctively dive on top of your sister just in time. The explosion of hot plasma practically evaporates the comparably flimsy door as if it were nothing more than paper. The searing heat above you and pain along your back tell you just how close the blast came to doing the same to you. As the walls fracture and burn the floor continues to rumble and, coinciding with a echoing groan, sudden depress and collapse underneath your bodies.

You fall through the floor with the surrounding chunks of marbled floor and embers into the burning wreckage below. By sheer luck, you land in a pile of rubble and dust amid the ruined main hall. You hear moans of pain and calls for help all around you as you recover.

You've managed to escape with nothing more than some bruises, though you're having trouble getting to your feet and keeping your balance. As you stumble again in an attempt to stand, your bruised brain notices your sister unmoving next to you. You lurch forward over her with an uncoordinated sway and turn her over.

Still breathing...just knocked unconscious from the blast.

In your pained, ringing ears you think you recognize the agonizing cry of sirens in the distance. You stumble across the room to a nearby pile of wreckage that you recognize as what's left of one of the grand columns in the main hall. You trip and fall onto your back...and something oddly soft.

Amid the shadows of the fires, you look back...

It's the alien from earlier, the Argazdan....or what's left of him. The ground is cratered and scorched black around what chunks remain of him. Nearby, you see the charred bits of armor that are barely distinguishable as that of a Republic Soldier.

As shock slowly takes hold of your own body, you spot a blackened, melted metallic object amid the pieces of tissue that was once the terrorist. Shakily you pick up the object...

A medallion, bearing an insignia the Republic has not seen in an age.

You shudder, perhaps due to the pain or perhaps the dawning realization...

The Republic has been attacked.

This quest takes place at the beginning of the mandalorian war era, yes.

However, there is one major difference in this version of events that will likely have consequences to come.
