“I don’t recognize this ceiling.”

You groan as every part of your body aches, particularly your head. It’s freezing in here, too. On your right is a pile of clothes on a chair, and on the right, adjusting a bouquet of flowers by your nightstand, is your older sister. Her long, flowing hair drops down past her hospital gown and reaches her knees next to her IV stand. There’s heavy bags under her eyes.

“Hey, Haru,” you say.

“Oh, you’re awake,” she replies in a quiet voice, “How are you feeling?”

“Incredible, the best I’ve ever been,” you reply emptily as you try to sit up, “You told me you were doing well.”

Haruko tilts her head and stares off out the window, “Mmm, I am. I just got 100% competition in Rabbit Ribbon.”

“…What did we agree on about being honest to each other?”

“Heheh, sorry,” she says, “I wasn’t expecting my little brother to pay me a surprise visit on a Saturday.” Haruko sighs and gives you a stern look of disapproval, “I can’t believe you managed to hospitalize yourself on the first week. I expected, like, at least a month. At least!”

“Hey, my track record isn’t bad at all.”

Haruko sighs. “So. What happened? They told me it was a small gas explosion, and the dorm safety system manage to contain most of the damage,” she says,” Which, y’know, sounds like BS.”

...
>”Sounds like exactly what happened.”
>”They have a safety system?”
>”It was a terrorist attack, no big deal. Don’t worry about it.”
>”Can’t remember, sorry. My head still hurts.”

“Do you want to hear the truth, or do you want to hear what you want me to say?”

“Playin wise guy with me, Kats?” she says, lightly grinding her knuckles on the side of your head, “Just don’t make me worry too much, ‘kay?”

“You know I can take care of myself,” you groan.

Haruko sighs, “It’s my job to worry.”

“…Sorry.”

You sit there, listening to the chirping of the birds perched outside the windowsill.

Then you say, “Oh. I forgot to bring it. Well actually I couldn’t.”

“Don’t worry about it, small stuff,” she waves it off.

You say, as you try to stand up, “I know it gets pretty boring in here, I’ll just—” your interrupted by your body when you crash back onto the beside, “Ugh, my legs.”

“Are you okay?” she says, helping you back up, “Jeez, be careful. That was pretty loud, did Kaori wake up?”

“…Huh?” you turn to where she’s looking at—a heap of clothing. A heap that’s slowly heaving in an out, as if it was breathing. “…How long as she been here?”

“All day. Or night, depending on how you look at it. What a nice little sister.”

“Please don’t encourage her,” you say.

“Ehh. You know I always wanted one, though.”

It’s quiet.

You look at the flowers beside your hospital bed. A vase of lotuses, all dyed in a deep, rich blue. It takes you a moment to see it, but you realize they all have 9 petals. There’s a card; thin, clean lines creating the shadows of a lotus flower, and inside is a single word: “sorry.”

And equally devoid of information is the writing on the small, clear bag of cookies next to it. An almost blank sticker of a skull is on it, a stray pen mark standing out as if a half-completed thought was left abandoned. The cookies look homemade. When you put one in your mouth, you see they taste like it too.

“My little Kats is growing up,” Haruko lets out some fake sniffles, “Ah, he’s getting interested in women already. What if he gets ensnared in a deathly trap?”

“Are you sure you’re not talking about yourself?”

“Hehe,” she smiles, “You missed them, and Sorai came by just a minute ago too.”

“…Did one of them have a strange hair bun?”

“Nine prongs around it? Yup. She looked a bit hurt, but still better than you.”

“Looks like I got fixed up pretty well anyways,” you say, “Here, want a cookie?”

“Don’t mind if I do~”

The door creaks open, and someone peeks around the corner. It’s Usagi.

“I should get going,” Haruko says, a finger wiping off a crumb into her mouth.

“Ah you don’t have to,” Usagi says, “I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.”

“It’s ‘kay, we can talk later,” she smiles as she walks out.

As Usagi watches your older sister leave, all you can think about is…

“Did you come back from last century or are you cosplaying as a school shooter?” you say, staring at her oversized trench coat.

Right when the door closes, Usagi steps forward and lets the thing drop to the ground, revealing a strange outfit, “What, did you expect me to walk around in this?”

It’s a maid outfit. Except it’s kind of… weird. You’re left speechless.

“Don’t… don’t you think you’re staring a bit much?” she says, recoiling a bit, “So… how is it?”

I…
>”It… fits you.”
>”You know I was joking, right?”
>”It’s cute on you.”

“You know I was joking, right?”

“…Ehn?” she opens her mouth.

But before she can say anything else, you add, “But it’s cute on you.”

“…” she looks at you, then says, “Thanks, I know right!? I was surprised it was even my size when I got it,” she says, twirling her hair around a finger, “Looks like you’re doin—ah… ahh… achoo!” Usagi rubs her nose. “Flowers… did someone die? Why couldn’t they have gotten a basket of fruit?”

“The flowers are nice,” you reply, “So anyways… why?”

“I uh… wanted to make it up to you somehow,” she says, and then bows, “So today, I’ll be serving my master—Gah! I can’t do this, nope.”

“…Make up for what?”

“If I didn’t suggest you check the second floor first, you wouldn’t have gotten caught in the explosion.”

“No, I agreed to…” you trail off, “Wait, what?”

“The gas explosion?” she replies, seemingly genuine.

”Huh…”
>”Is your head okay?”
>”Oh. The gas explosion.”

“Oh. The gas explosion.”

“What’s wrong?”

“It’s nothing. Well then… mind getting me tea?”

“Sure!” Usagi says, turning to leave before suddenly stopping. Then, she spins around, picks up the trench coat, and covers herself again.

“…”

“I’m not getting caught walking around in this,” she pouts.

Then the door opens and shuts, leaving you in the room alone. Or not.

Something moves in the edge of your vision. You glance over and barely make out Kaori in the bundle. Her legs are crossed with a coat covering her body, her face and whole head bundled with a scarf and a knitted hat.

“You’re awake, aren’t you,” you direct to her.

Silence. And then…

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“The entire time. I wanted to refrain from… interrupting.”

You nudge forward. “Come on, get out of there.”

“I’m afraid not; I’ll freeze to death. You don’t want a dead body in your room, do you?”

“Then I’ll just turn up the thermostat.”

“Absolutely not! Those flowers would wither!”

“…Are these…?”

“Kururi and mine’s. It was a joint effort, so please don’t!”

You sigh.

Kaori lowers the scarf, letting you see her face. “Are you still upset?”

“No. I told you, didn’t I? I was happy to see you okay.”

“Then… is this about back then?”

No.

”…You’re quite the terrible liar.”
>”Forget it, I’m going for a walk.”

“What do I have to do to show I’m not angry?”

“…Since you asked…” she says, “You could at least visit me occasionally.”

“We go to the same high school now, Kaori.”

“Still…!”

You sigh. “Okay. I’ll visit you from time to time. Same place?”

She tries to hold back a huge smile as she nods. Those boiling hot summers during in middle school spent with her, Haru, and Sorai… You almost miss them. Well, saying almost would be a lie. You really do.

“Well, if you help me study, I’ll be glad to go,“ you joke.

“Gladly!” she replies.

Suddenly, the door opens and Usagi comes in with a tray with two cups of hot tea from the hospital cafeteria. The steam rises in the cold air, and when you look back at Kaori she’s already shrunk back in.

“…”

Usagi hands you the tray, “Here you go.”

”Thanks.”

You sip on the hot tea and feel your body get warmed up from the inside out. Ah, your limbs got too used to the cold. Your breaths blow the heat back up to you, and you bundle up a little tighter.

You look at Usagi, her half buttoned up trench coat revealing the costume underneath barely.

“About what happened yesterday…”

She takes a sip. “Ah, sorry.”

“No wait listen, did you see me yesterday in that room?”

“I did. I think I heard someone calling me, so I ran… I think. I found someone on the way there.”

“Then, did you see the girl?”

“Kururi?”

“No, the other one.”

“I didn’t see anyone else. Just you and Kururi…right? It’s a bit fuzzy.”

“…You know we were attacked, right?”

“Ehn? No way, that’s crazy.”

You stop, unsure of how to continue.

“Okay look—“ you’re interrupted as the door opens and someone strides in with a faint smile that doesn’t reach his eyes. Still in Tetsuyashi’s uniform, the boy stands in front of your bed, the Student Council armband wrapped around his arm clear as day.

“Heya Katsuya. How are you feeling?” Rin asks.

“Hi Rin. I’m good,” you blankly reply, “That uniform… don’t tell me.”

“Ahah, I’m here to see if you’re okay, of course, but I trust the doctors here, y’know?” he laughs, “But I need to talk to you about something. Saki, mind if I talk to him alone for a sec?”

“Oh, go ahead,” she says, slowly getting up.

“Thanks for the tea, Usagi.”

“It’s nothing,” she replies, as she leaves.

The moment the door closes, you tell Rin, “The dog did it.”

“…What? Oh,” he laughs, “No, it’s not about that. Old history.”

“You guys had everything fixed already?”

“Before I made you two do night patrols even,” he replies.

“That’s… ridiculously fast! That wasn’t even a whole day.”

“We have our ways,” Rin says, “Just like with this.” He scratches his head. “I know you weren’t expected to be there for the ‘clarification’ announcement, but the President was a bit… uh… unwilling to walk all this way.”

“I don’t like where this is heading.”

“We’ll make a deal with you. Well, it’s not like you have a choice, but that sounds mean. Ah, actually you do have a choice, but it’s… never mind. Okay, back on track. So, we need your help. I’m the one that needs it, actually, since I’m the only member of the Disciplinary Committee after the upperclassmen graduated.”

You groan. “Just tell me what you want me to do.”

“Watch Kururi. Easy, right?”

“Watch her? She was the victim last night.”

“And make sure she’s safe of course. Safety is super important, after all. We’ll pull some strings here and there, but I’ll be relying on you for this.”

“I don’t have a choice, right?” you sigh, “It’s just one thing after another.”

“Well, it’s better than the alternative, that’s for sure!” he deliberately says, “Oh by the way,” he stops, and then he stares into your eyes, “What happened last night, you were mistaken. All of this is between us, okay?”

“…Right,” you quietly reply. As Rin leaves, you stop your eyes from trailing off to Kaori nestled and hidden away.

[Unbelievable.]
