You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

Today, you have nothing to do but wait. You have two assassination attempts pending and an ongoing construction project in the city, but there's nothing that requires your immediate attention, which is a good sign.

And having nothing to do means you can do whatever you want instead of taking care of the latest crisis.

You're surrounded by women who would love to spend some quality time with you, but it's been a long time since you were free to just hang out with Myrddin, so male bonding isn't out of the question.

Who do you want to spend time with?

You have a lifetime left to spend with your lovers, but Myrddin... Actually, you have a lifetime to spend with him as well, but whatever. It's time to make the most of it.

You put on some simpler clothes, strapping your sword to your belt just in case you run into another "incident" and sneak over to Myrddin's house to see how he's going, knocking very loudly on the door just in case he's busy with his wife.

"Hello, your highness," Myrddin says as he opens the door. "Is there anything wrong? Need to kill someone else?"

"No assassinations today, Myrddin." Not yet, anyway. "I just thought we should socialize together for, go around the city for a bit."

"Certainly." Myrddin throws his coat over his shoulder and follows you out. "Where do you want to go?"

"I'm in the mood for gambling," you say. "Know any places?"

Myrddin smirks and pushes his glasses up. "I know a few," he says. "What's your game? Dice, or cards?"

Dice games tend to rely more on pure luck than cunning, so they're a little easier. Card games, on the other hand, are usually much harder. There are only so many cards in a deck, so you need to play the other players as much as your hand.

At least money isn't an issue, so you don't need to worry about taking losses. You'd have to go insane to gamble enough money to put a dent in the city's finances.

"How about cards?" You ask. "I'm up for a challenge."

"Okay," Myrddin says, "let's go."

Myrddin's gambling establishment of choice today is down a dingy, rundown alley. You're not at all surprise when Myrddin opens the door and the interior is worthy of a luxury mansion: gold-plated enchanted candelabra, air conditioning, mahogany furniture padded with velvet and an impressive collection of wines behind the bar.

The patrons are quite varied. You see a lot of old men in their retirement, but there are some young men and women as well. Many of them are merchants you recognize from your dealings, although they don't seem to have recognized you yet. It's nice to see they're doing well enough to find spare change for gambling, although it's possible they're just using the establishment for casual negotiations with a bit of an edge on the side.

"This is where I usually come when I feel lucky," Myrddin says. "The tables are sorted according to stakes. Low-stakes players are only here for fun, while high-stakes players have money to burn, almost. Middle-stakes players are actually the toughest."

Of course they are. The high-stakes players can handle stiff losses, but the ones playing for middle stakes are probably professionals. They know what they're doing.

>[Intrigue/Autosuccess] "Low-stakes first."
>[Intrigue/1d12] "Let's hit the high stakes."
>[Intrigue/1d10] "I'm in the mood for a challenge. Let's sit with the professionals."

"I'm in the mood for a challenge," you say. "Let's sit with the professionals."

Myrddin points you to a table. You're greeted by disinterested nods and grunts, but Myrddin gets a little more recognition. The players - one woman, two men - are on the younger side, but their drinks, clothes and cigars are on the more expensive side. They've been doing very well for themselves.

"Hello, Myrddin," one of the men says. "Been a while since we've seen you here. Brought someone new with you?"

"A friend of mind wanted to check his luck," Myrddin says.

"I guess we'll see about that."

The dealer hands out the cards. The game is standard hold 'em poker.

You start off with a 10 of spades and a Jack of hearts. Five cards later, there's a pair of 10s and another Jack on the table. It's a full house for you. The second best hand is a straight. The dealer pushes the pot your way.

The pressure at the table increases, and you can feel all eyes on you, except for Myrddin, who probably saw this coming.

These people are professional players, so they won't stick around if they think they're losing. Bankrupting them would be fun, but if you want to keep playing for a while, you'll have to hustle them a bit, let them think they can win in the long run.

>[Intrigue/Autosuccess] Just let them win. You're only doing this for fun anyway.
>[Intrigue/1d12] Crush them. Nothing's as fun as victory.

You maintain a poker face and think about how to pull this off. You've already won, so they'll get suspicious of you just start losing immediately. The best way to proceed is to make it look like you're riding high from your victory and don't know when to stop. That way, they'll think they can sucker you deeper in.

It's a tricky process. One wrong move, and you'll either go bankrupt or scare them off. You call all your hands, even if they're not that great, just to see what they dealer spits out. You raise more than you should on the decent hands, especially when you suspect they're really losing hands, and recoup some of your losses with smaller gambles so the game keeps going.

The tension eases off after a few hands, and you know you've got them right where you want them.

Then you get a bunch of bum hands in a row.

But that's okay. Your luck picks up again after a bit. You start off with a pair of Queens, and pick up a third Queen on the flop and the last one on the river. You hit it big, but not big enough to scare them away.

No, a second full house takes care of that. You're dealt a pair of Kings, and end up with three Kings and a pair of 6s by the time the dealer is done.

The other gamblers bow out - they know they've been had - and Myrddin chuckles, collecting his own winnings.

"Well done, your highness," Myrddin says. "Not sure you'll be welcome here again though, at least not at this table. Maybe the high rollers won't mind you winning as much."

You glance over at said high rollers. They're still going at it strong.

"Might as well keep going."

There's just one thing to take care of first. You cash in some of your chips and let the bartender know that the next round's on you. There's a polite round of applause, but it's oddly subdued compared to some of the taverns you've seen, but then again, this is a more high-class establishment despite the dubious decoration.

As a nice bonus, your next marks are quite tipsy by the time you join them.

The high-rollers are more talkative, although they don't discuss anything serious. Family, gossip, at most a few tidbits about either deals. It's an easy conversation to slip into, although you leave your consorts and concubines out of it.

>[Intrigue/Autosuccess] Go easy on them.

No reason to push things too far. You decide to play casually and keep your bets small. Just for fun. Myrddin isn't gambling too hard either, preferring instead to chat with his neighbours.

Altogether, it's a pretty good run. You lose some hands, but you win most. The wagers are relatively small compared to what this table usually sees, but it stretches things out longer.

Time catches up and the players bow out so they can return home. You still have some time left, so you sit at the bar with Myrddin.

"That wasn't so bad," Myrddin says. "More relaxing that plots and intrigue."

"I know what you mean," you agree. "It's still a challenge, but it's a challenge I can actually afford to lose. The pressure's still there, but I have enough leeway that I can actually enjoy it."

You order a round of drinks and think about what you want to talk about next.

>"How's your wife doing these days?"
>"I've been thinking about Olstren…"

"How's your wife doing these days?"

You can't possibly be the only one with women issues, right?"

"I'm doing very well, your highness. Thank you for asking."

You carefully slide your eyes to the left.

Yep. Nimue is sitting right next to you.

"How long have you been there?"

Myrddin rather blatantly laughs at you.

"I've been here since you arrived, your highness," she says.

"I'm glad you've been enjoying yourself," you say. "Degfford's been treating you well?"

"It is a very pleasant city, especially now that I'm used to it," Nimue says. "It can be difficult to find time for marital activities."

Myrddin chokes on his drink and coughs. Oh, you have him now.

"Have you tried tying him down?" You ask. "I can teach you how to use rope."

Nimue tilts her head inquisitively. "But I already know how to use rope, your highness," she says. "It's one of the basic elements of torture. You need to -"

"No, not like that," you say. "Well, mostly like that, but not quite. It's like exercise, you know? It hurts when you push yourself hard enough, but then you feel a rush of relief when you're done and you can release the tension. It's the same basic concept."

"Oh, I see what you mean," Nimue says. "So you think I should try that on Myrddin?"

"Sure!" You glance at Myrddin; there's now a pyramid of empty shot glasses piled in front of him. "That way, he won't be able to get away and you can spend as much time with him as you want. I don't think I'll need his services for a while anyway."

"Thank you for the advice, your highness." Nimue takes a spool of rope out from somewhere. "Myrddin, let's go home. I want to try this."

"Wait, no, I do have work to do right now."

Myrddin tries to protest, but given how drunk he is at the moment, it's not very convincing. You pull him off his chair and help him stand up.

"Now, now, Myrddin." You smile and pat his back. "You have to give the lady what she wants. Let's get you home."

If nothing else, this'll make a delightfully embarrassing story later on.
