It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies.

Previously on Fantasy Crusader Quest...

After dealing with some discord in the camp, you set out, heading through the lighter forest. You were ambushed by a group of people that called themselves "Wood Elves," but you cleared up any misunderstanding. Now accompanied by a Wood Elf Pathfinder named Cellica Shadan, you make your way to the other side of the woods.

Sunlight breaks through the trees above you, striking your face. Stirring slightly, you yawn, moving around slightly, before groaning, and standing up, rubbing the sleep out of your eyes.

You must've slept on a tree root, or something, because your back is killing you. Leaning back, you felt it pop, quite loudly. Oh my.

Shaking your head, you look around the camp. Around you, the men are waking up, packing up their bedrolls, and dousing the dying embers of the campfires. The ones who were on last watch seem a bit more tired, but nothing that would affect their performance in battle, so it's fine. You suppose you should pack up your bedroll as well, so you do, moving to roll up the furs that- huh.

It appears you have an elf in your bedroll.

Cellica lies there, snoring quietly, peaceful look on her face. How did you not notice her get there?

...You'd hate to wake up someone sleeping so soundly, so you don't, at least not yet, instead opting to kick dirt on the fire, dousing the flame, making sure the ashes are fully dead, before moving onto where Gunnar is tied to a tree branch. Patting him down, Gunnar starts moving around slightly, ready for the day.

Taking your gambeson from Gunnar's saddlebags, and putting it on over your tunic, you go back to your bedroll, and look down at the sleeping elf, sighing.

>Nudge her gently. "Cellica. Cellica. Time to go."
>"Cellica, come on. We need to break camp."

Shaking your head, you grab the bottom of your bedroll, pulling it out from under her.

Yelping, Cellica flails about for a second, before looking up at you, confused. "Victor?"

Shaking your head, you say, "Too familiar, Cellica. Getting in my bed puts my honor into question, so please don't do it again."

The bedraggled elf looks up at you, still confused. "So, wait, I did something that was... wrong?"

Incredulous, you look at her. "How did you think that this wouldn't be an issue? If I have a woman in my bed, I look like I'm breaking my vows?"

She tilts her head, rubbing her eyes. "So, your people don't sleep together when they're cold?"

Mouth agape, you shake your head. How does she not know of this? "Not unless they're married, no."

"Married?" The elf looks genuinely confused at this. "What's that?"

"It's when two people join in a union blessed by God."

Seeing that she still doesn't get it, you ask, "How do you not know this, Cellica?"

Standing up, and stretching, she lets out a little yawn. "Well, we don't have anything like 'marriage'. The closest thing is when two people share blood before they mate..." Cellica trails off as she realizes where you were going with this.

"Oh. Um. Well. You see. Uh. I'msorrybyeI'llbetakingcareofmyhorse." The small woman dashes off through the camp, towards where her horse is, face red.

Sighing, you roll up your bedroll. How naive and innocent must she be, to not even know what marriage is? Maybe it's a cultural thing, but it's growing more and more apparent that Cellica has never been far from the forest, much less interacted with people other than her own.

Picking up the bundle of furs, you go to Gunnar, and strap the bedroll onto the saddlebags, readying him for the day. Patting and brushing him, you rubbed his nose, scritching his muzzle.

Finishing up, you untie Gunnar's reins, and lead him out of the camp, to the small trail you've been following through the woods.

Pulling yourself up into the saddle, you look back at your men, who have noticed your getting ready, and have begun making their way to the trail behind you. As soon as they're in a column two men wide behind you, you motion for the two closest to approach you.

"I want you two to be our outriders to the fore, today. Send one back if anything happens, but if necessary, both of you come back, okay?"

Nodding and saluting you, they ride off at a trot, quickly disappearing around the bend in the trail.

Turning to the main body of men, you say, "Forward! Let's ride!"

Nudging Gunnar forward, you look around as you ride. Where is Cellica? She knows these woods, she'll-

There she is. Riding at a fast clip to catch up, the elf reins her horse in, slowing to a walk beside you. Still blushing, she lets out an incoherent mumble, looking away from you.

>"I'm sorry?"
>"Care to repeat that?"
>"So, Cellica, what are we looking at ahead of us?"
>"Is this about 'mating'?"

The less harsh version, the way I see it as of right now we have got an unprecedented situation and Knights were trained soldiers first and foremost. We know that we need more information about the area we've landed in and as of yet these natives have done nothing to us, provided a guide and haven't even behaved particularly blasphemously. We should treat them as knowledgeable heathens. I don't think we would be going full smite on them until they come right out against God or attack the faithful.

"I'm sorry, what did you say? I didn't quite catch that."

Looking up at you, blushing, Cellica says, "No, I'm sorry. I didn't realize that..."

She fumbles for a second, still embarrassed.

"I didn't realize that you would have different thoughts on it than me..." Grabbing the reins to her white mare tightly, she stutters.

"I-I didn't really think of it like that, Victor, honest. I was just cold, a-and-"

Cellica begins to speak faster and faster. "It's not like I don't think you're unattractive and I wouldn't mate with you butohgodswhatdidIjustsayit'sjustthatIwascoldandyourbedrollwassowarmandohgods"

She begins to panic, getting flustered and even more red-faced.

Sighing, Cellica smiles, blush abating.

Raising a finger, you say, "However, please don't let it happen again. I'll get you a bedroll, so you don't have to do anything that might seem... improper."

"Alright!" Cellica's mood seems to be greatly improved. "I'm glad that we got that cleared up!"

Nodding, you ask, "So, Cellica, where are we going today, what can we expect?"

"Oh! Well, we're going to be passing some ruins on this trail, but they're far away from the trail, so you don't have to worry about rocks! After that, we're going to be going past a small village, it's full of humans, like yourself, but we mostly leave them alone, and they keep to themselves. After that, we're gonna get on a road that leads out of the woods, and we're gonna be in the grassland!"

"Thanks, Cellica," you say, "so what about my friends? Are they in danger on the plains, or in the deep forest?"

She thinks about this a little, but shakes her head. "No, not really. In the forest, they're going to pass where we live, and on the plains, there's only a bunch of wolves. If they're careful, they should be fine." Taking this in stride, you nod, and say,

"I'd like to see that village, it'll help us get more information about the area."

Nodding, Cellica looks hesitant. "I've... seen the village before, but... I've never gone into the village itself..."

Looking at her curiously, you motion for her to continue.

"Well, the villagers don't bother us... and we don't bother them. It's kind of... an understanding. So I don't know what will happen if I go there..."

She looks at you, troubled.

"I don't wanna ruin anything between the village and my people, so... is it okay if I meet you after you leave? I'll make sure no one sees me."

>"Sure, go ahead."
>"Well, Cellica, as they say, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Come with us, who knows, they could welcome you with open arms."

"Yes, it's probably for the best. Peasants are a superstitious folk, don't like outsiders, let alone outsiders that don't look like them."

Nodding slowly, Cellica, says, "Yeah, that's what I thought, too... I'll go to the other side of the village, I'll wait for you there."

Watching her ride her horse into the trees, you watch her for as long as you can, before she disappears into the brush.

How does she keep doing that?

Shaking your head, incredulous, you keep riding forward along the trail, your men following you.

-------------------------

It takes about three hours of riding, but you finally reach the outskirts of the village, a small cobble path past several houses to the town center, where a well is. Riding single file, now, you attract stares from incredulous villagers, whose lives have just been interrupted by 52 men on horses.

A small crowd gathering around you, you get off Gunnar, taking him by his reins, leading him with you. From a building that has a strange, pagan-looking symbol over the doorway, a decrepit old man, with the same pagan symbol on an amulet around his neck approaches.

"Greetings, Ser, my name is Augustus Maximus, and I am the shaman for this village. Might I have your name?"

Alright m8s, let's clear up some confusion on the Crusaders that you are.

Here's how Crusaders usually were:
They were that priest who would talk to you kindly, but smack you if you started causing trouble for other people, or if you attacked them, they'd say: "REPENT, MOTHERFUCKER" while kicking your ass, and actually accept surrenders.

First Crusaders (the Templars around 1000 and these AU Teutons) were actually alright people. It's the FOURTH Crusade where they were massive assholes.

>>
>>1187214
Elves haven't said dicks about magic or paganism, although it's been inferred by Victor from what he learned from Cellica that they're heathen.

And weird ears aren't really enough to start murdering people, even if they're freaky.

Also, I'm not the one who chooses the dialog, I'm just the one who writes it. Everybody else has been pretty polite and tolerant when I've given them DEUS VULT options.

"Of course, my name is Victor Reis, and I am the leader of these men. Might you have somewhere we could talk?"

Nodding, the old man says, "Yes, yes, I do. Tell your men that they can rest around the well, and water their horses."

Waving a soldier forward, you tell him, "Tell everyone to rest up here and water their horses; be sure to make a good impression on the villagers, as well. Don't need any angry mobs kicking us out."

Saluting, the man turns his horse around, and begins telling everyone within earshot in the column your orders.

Turning around, and tying Gunnar to a post, you follow the old man into his shack, making sure to cross yourself as you walk beneath the pagan sign.

Inside, the home is filled with books, lit candles, and more disturbingly, animal bones. The shaman, doddering over to a chair, gives a polite nod to you, motioning to a chair on the opposite side of his warped table.

"So, Ser Reis, what brings you to our village in Mornaur Woods?"

Sitting down, hearing the old chair creak under your weight, you look at the man as he sips a cup of... something. What is that?

"We're an expeditionary force, trying to map the area."

Frowning, the old man asks, "So there's to be war, soon?"

Shaking your head, you say, "No, we're from... elsewhere. My order and the knights we came to support are... lost, to say the least."

Relieved, the old man sighs. "So, you're to be on your way within the day?"

You give a noncommittal shrug.

"If we can, but one reason we came here is to find out more about the area."

Nodding, the shaman asks, "So what can I tell you?"

You point to his amulet. "What, exactly, is the significance of that symbol on your amulet, and over your door?"

Surprised, he holds it up. On it, there is a depiction of a stag, rising up on its hind legs. "This? Oh, it's just a charm against the fey. I'm sort of expected to have it. I'm the village's shaman, after all."

I'm just lurking but wasn't a big thing for Christians back in ye olden times not to judge for not worshiping God if they couldn't have known about Christianity?

Yes. I personally am more ready to DEUS VULT the fae rather than the shaman thou. Fuckin' fae/fey man.

This
>"So, if I might ask, whose power does this charm invoke? Who do you worship?"
>(Cross Self)
>If your village is going through trying times, this might help. (Give him a bible)

Personally I'm for not murdering everyone until we've found out as much information as possible, given them a genuine chance to accept the Lord's word and met up with our main force again.
>>
>>1187559
That was practiced, but only in areas where there were significant pagan populations

ie: Germany, Ireland, Nordic countries, East Europe, etc.

The ones who didn't do it were Italians, Spaniards, and Englishmen.

The crusades were considerably more violent than typical Christian evangelism in pagan realms (e.g. Kievan Rus or Scandinevia). Which makes sense given the Muslim East and Christian Europe were at war long before the first crusades were called.

Performing the Sign of the Cross, you take a deep breath, and continue.

"So, if I might ask, whose power does this charm invoke? Who do you worship?"

The old shaman lets the amulet fall back to his chest, looking strangely at you, after you invoked the Cross.

"It's a charm of the White Stag."

Leaning back, the man picks up a pipe from the cluttered table, and continues,

"About... fifty years ago, back when I was a young man, in my prime, we had attracted the attention of Wod and his Wilde Jaege. What he had come for, we didn't know. We barely had enough time to prepare our houses against the Wilde Jaege, before it came through the forest, buffeting against our houses. The noise, gods, the noise. I still remember the shrieks of men, women, children, and other things in the dead of night.

"Half the village was taken away or killed that night, but we had a savior. A pure white stag, with a single broken horn came through, and attracted their attention. The only reason I saw it was because weird things were breaking down my door, whispering to me. Through the holes, I saw it. It looked me in the eyes, and then took off like a bolt of lightning. the Wilde Jaege was quick to chase it."

Lighting the pipe, and taking a long drag, he says, "I don't suppose we worship any one god. Julius, the smith, worships the God of Craft, the Viccis worship the Goddess of the Hunt. I honestly don't know who worships who. I'm too old to care anymore."

The story that he told... it shook you. Such a horrible thing to happen, and these poor people don't even have a true god to help them. Feeling sympathetic, you say, "I'll have a man drop off a book for you, if your village is going through hard times, may it help guide you through them."

Nodding, the man takes a puff on his pipe. "Mighty fine of you, sir Knight. I-"

You're cut off by the screech of horses outside. What? Why are the horses screaming?

>Run outside.
>"Stay here, sir." Then run.
>Look out the doorway
>Write-in.

You manage to bark out a, "Stay here, sir!" before you dash to the door, knocking over the chair you were sitting in.

Slamming the door open, you rush out to the courtyard, where your men are standing with drawn swords, trying to control their horses, keep them from running away. At the edge of the forest line, stands one of the most disgusting, yet terrifying things you have ever seen in your life.

It is like a skinless horse and rider, but cyclopean. From its' mouth, comes a green gas. Its human arms drag along the ground, claws rending the dirt behind it.

Almost as if it had been waiting for you, the creature looks at you with both of its eyes, turning both of its heads to stare at you.

THIS VILLAGE IS CURSED WE MUST RAZE IT TO THE GROUND

Not to mention there's a distinct lack of DUES VULTING in these thread recently... I don't like it. We've not even murdered the old man when he said he worshipped a pagan stag instead of our rightful God and Lord in Heaven.
>>
>>1189348

Crusaders were a lot more culturally and politically savvy than I think you're giving them credit for. The leaders especially were not foaming at the mouth zealots that's not a good way to lead your people. At this point we're operating on the deep in enemy territory with no way of knowing how to get in touch with allies, whether we have allies, or even a defensive position to fall back to. In short we're out on the raggedy edge right now and we don't want to go fighting people we don't have to be fighting. We can get around to converting the heathens we run into later.

This obvious demon though, we have to be fighting that, we should unleash all sorts of Deus Vult on that piece of shit.

You would deny that this demon is not influenced by the heathen's worship? He said himself he worships a stag, boom, there's a stag demon. Besides, who's going to notice one little hamlet in the middle of the woods suddenly vanishing? Worse comes to worse we could convert the entire village, not even forcefully.

Maybe we have hidden clerical magics and we don't even know it? Either way DEUS VULT

Nah that's a horse and rider demon and the Stag is what pulled away the very attack that the Shaman mentioned, and which was just quoted to us from the demon's mouth. So yeah, the only way the demon is influenced by their worship is that it is apparently held back by it. Also the Elves would definitely notice if we suddenly razed the village to the ground and given the fact that we're currently standing about in their forest area I wouldn't put high hopes on having all our men come back if they suddenly thought we were hostile. But I would be behind conversion.

Honestly the most difficult thing will be figuring out whether or not we actually get any powers from our worship, we are now in a world (even if we don't know it yet) where miracles are in your face things you can call upon, where healing touch closes wounds in front of your eyes. Now we just need to find out if our god has influence here and fighting this demon in his name will be a good place to start.

Father's day must be the most confusing day for you.

Also what the hell is with these file names? Do you just have like, an entire folder dedicated to this?

You're typing really fast m8. You trying to guess the library's alarm code at the same time?

You know what makes me laugh though? Track running events. It's like seeing a crime being committed. You hear a gun shot and see a bunch of black guys hauling ass.
