You have found yourself in a forest.
….
Well shit, how did you get here? You’re pretty sure that there were no forests down the street you just walked into if memory serves you right. There’s no street to walk back to either. Maybe you just blacked out for a bit and walked here while unconscious? Maybe, you passed out on the sidewalk and are dreaming all of this.

You close your eyes and pinch yourself for a few seconds before opening them back up.
...
Ow, yep that hurts.

Nope, still in this forest. Quite a nice forest too to be honest, and with a clear blue and sunny sky visible just past the canopy to boot. Which is a bit weird, considering it was neither clear nor sunny before you somehow got here. You are feeling a bit disoriented to be perfectly honest.

The view is nice enough at least, though you have a feeling that you’re going to be late for that party. Which is a shame; you heard that they had cake.

Well you might as well just check the map before just wandering off in a random direction. It’s probably for the best considering you wouldn’t even know where to start.

Taking out your smartphone, you bring up the map screen to see that you are currently…

…In the middle of a lake located in Sweden.
That doesn’t seem right. No network connection either, so you won’t be calling anyone anytime soon. Looks like for the time being the phone is relegated to being an expensive flashlight. Shit.

Your attention is drawn away from your flashlight by the feint sound of what you would guess to be horses. Possibly a cart to boot, judging from the dull wooden clattering accompanying them. Maybe you’re in a more rural area? Either way, there should be someone who can give you directions.

Heading through the bushes carefully, you encounter a landmark. A road! Well, a dirt road, but you can’t really complain.
Your earlier suspicions are confirmed once you look a bit further down the road and spot a pretty rustic looking wooden cart being pulled by a horse.

Maybe you're in Europe somehow, you remember seeing something about horse carts on the telly that one time.

The cart itself seems to be carrying a variety of grains along with some unrecognizable things you assume to be a sort of vegetable or fruit, and at the front there is a young man in a simple white shirt and brown pants steering.
He does not appear to have noticed you yet.

Putting on your best smile, you start toward the cart.

“Hey there,”, you call out to the fellow riding the cart. “I’m sorry to bother you, but I appear to be lost! I was hoping that you would be able to tell me where I’ve ended up.”

The farmer regards you curiously for a moment before speaking, “Well, yer’ on the road just between Dornwich and Vaburgh.”

Your smile takes a slight hit, you don’t recognize either of those names. “What country am I in?”

The farmer gives you a funny look. “Ecrus of course.”

Well fuck, you’ve never heard of a place like that, and your no closer to finding out where you are. You smile and nod anyway. “Uh… Where do you happen to headed?”

“Oh, just up do Vaburgh market.”

“Hmm… Would you mind if hitched a ride?” Maybe you can find a map somewhere in Vaburgh, wherever that is.

The farmer thinks for a moment before answering. “Sure, I guess. Hop on,” as he reaches out to help you up onto the cart bench, which you accept. Soon you’re riding alongside… huh, you never learned his name, did you.

“Huh, well it’s nice ta’ meet you Markus, I’m Sigmund.”

“So, what are you headed to the market for?”

“Oh, just lookin’ ta’ buy some nails n’ other tools, and,” Sigmund turns to point at the vegetables the cart is carrying “ta’ sell some of the harvest. What ‘bout you, how’d you get into the woods?”

amnit, can’t tell him what actually happened or you’ll sound crazy. Time for the classic excuse!
“Well one of me mates invited me out for a night on the town, and one thing led to another and I’m waking up in the forest of an unfamiliar country; you know how it is.”
Perfect.

Sigmund raises an eyebrow at you “So you got drunk, and somehow wander’d out into th’ forest of a diff’rent country,” You don’t think he buys it. “Eh, sure. I’ve ‘eard weirder.”

You let out a sigh of relief.

Sigmund looks like he’s about to ask you something else, when he perks up suddenly “Ey, were ‘ere!”

…Huh
Yep you’re here alright, and right into a town out of the middle ages, with guards in armor and everything. You are definitely not in Britain anymore you think to yourself as the cart rolls through the stone gate of the town, people running around in rustic dress.

Sigmund catches your attention once more “I ain’t too sure about yer’ story, but if yer’ still lost ya probably wana check out the adventurer’s guild. They prolly’ have a map in their library over there.

>Thank him and check that out. Maps are good.

“Uh, are there any other places I should know about in this town?”

Sigmund strokes his chin thoughtfully “Well, there the smithy just next to the Guild, and then there’s the market in th’ center of town… OH! And there’s an Inn right across from th’ guild!”

Huh, how convenient. “Where is the guild anyway?”

“Oh, just down the street there,” Sigmund points straight ahead.

“Alright, thanks. Have a good day,” you say, hoping off the cart.

“Likewise,” Sigmund answers riding past you,
-
Huh, this here must be the adventurer’s guild. The smithy is right next to this building, and just as Sigmund said there’s an in just across from it. Neat. Oh well, no time like the present. You maneuver around a chatty group of peasants and push open the oak door into the large hall.

There are small groups of people with a variety of equipment scattered across the hall, some conversing with their fellows, a couple of loners looking awfully broody here and there, and a loud group of three fellows, two women and a tall man arguing in front of what looks like a notice board.

There also appears to be a receptionist sitting behind a counter looking quite bored, with a sign saying… “No Magic”? What?

I disagree. We don't sound like we know what's going on. If we did, we'd be freaking out at least a little.
>>
Might as well get that map you came for, those people arguing probably wouldn’t appreciate you butting in anyhow.
You walk up to the receptionist “Uh, excuse me.”

The receptionist not even looking up from what appears to be a book starts talking in an incredibly bored tone of voice “Hello, welcome to the adventurer’s guild. If you are here for a job, please check the notice board.”

“But I’m not here for a job,” you counter. “I’m in need of a map.”

The receptionist looks up, still seemingly bored “I’m sorry, but we don’t have any treasure maps at the moment, please come back later.”

All right, fuck this. “Look, all I need is an atlas. Not a job, and not a fucking treasure map.”

The receptionist raises an eyebrow “Well why didn’t you say so,” Before you can come back with a snide remark, the receptionist reaches under the desk and pulls out a worn piece of what looks like dried leather and rolls it open. “Does this help?”
