Yesterday you discovered two harsh facts about life. One your initial design for the Winter Soldiers lacked sufficient heating components to keep them operational in a long stretch of time outside the hive. They froze to death, this has you preoccupied, your designs aught to be perfect, a flaw is unthinkable. Yet there it was, a revised design must be drafted soon, this was not something that put you at ease. For it was also yesterday that you encountered a new species and also lost an entire expedition team of winter workers, winged workers, scouts and all your pride.

There was something deeply wrong about this, the moment you thought that there was an upper hand, a possibility to grow and expand. That was when the world came crashing down and crushed every piece of hope that there was left. Perhaps this had been a very bad choice of planet, You did not even go over your initial mutation when coming down. So many regrettable choices, who knows what future awaits you now. You wish you could reach unto the stars and peer upon the life of your sisters and mtoher and ask for a little help.

we still want to see what crashed on the other side of the mountain right? If so we know we can't go by air unless we can deal with those metal birds, we tried going by land and we all know how that ended. I say we go even lower and have our miners dig towards the crash site. This is going to take awhile but honestly I feel that a lot of our problems have been that we've been rushing into things half cocked.

As such let's go slow and build up our forces and build new nutrient producing facilities as our hive grows and mine any metal deposits we find along the way so when we finally do emerge on the other side we'll have a full army.

Also other things that might help us. Pit traps. dig a big ass hole and fill it with spikes. in the middle have a tower that leads up to ground level above the trap and place either some kind of animal in there for bait or just put a drone in their with a ranged weapon. Anything tries to take a bite out of the drone/bait if falls into the pit trap and we can even have some more drones at the bottom to finish off anything that doesn't die from the spikes and quick reset the trap and drag the remains back to the hive via tunnels.

These sound like good ideas or no?

sorry but I caught something and feel like shit. really tired but I can't fall asleep no mater what I try.

i guess not.

The first brood trio were out and about the outskirts of the base trying to collect some more nutrients and perhaps the odd small animal that happened to cross their path. The trio is not particularly strong, in fact they are extremely weak and their design was not meant for such harsh weather. You suspected that there was a strong possibility for them to freeze to death, so keeping them near was a wise choice.

Or so you thought, it happened fast, first one of the workers lost their footing then another gave out , its connection to you severed in an instant. The one that had lost its footing gave you a mired image, brown and white it was all jumbled up. Its visual systems along with its head were crushed.

the last one gave you a clear look at the menage before you, and oh so near to the base. alarms were going off in your head, danger of the most extreme kind was too close to you. Then the worker died as its body was cut in two. and now seared in your mind's eye was this very large insectoid, there was another queen near!

>>1193398

Queens do not fight. You decide to stay calm, after all getting worked up does you no good.

currently you have 5 soldiers to hatch, the creature you saw if for a second, seemed to you to be large, imposing, and strong. It may have been burrowed under a small patch of dirt. It seemed like an specialized soldier class.

You need defenses and fast, good thing you fortified the entrance and had sentry alcoves built. But you lacked the numbers for any real confrontation. Even using all your workers you knew it would not be enough. An idea creeped into your mind.

You could lay more soldier eggs, a large batch and then use the hatchery and half cook them for fast production, a very desperate more you could end up losing 75% of any eggs hatched that way. But you did need the numbers. It was a possibility.

>Set the sentries to overwatch (kill on sight)
>Lay more eggs and decide to use the hatchery? (how many)
>Remove the workers from the farms to serve as defense? (how many)

20 sounds good

>Queens do not fight
seeing how harsh this world is and how close some of these creatures are getting to the hive we may want to change that. I'm not saying send her out to the front lines but give her something to let her protect herself should the worse happen and the throne room is breached. I mean queens can change their appearance almost at will so grafting a few upgrades on shouldn't be to far from the realm of possibility.
>>
>>1193458
And set the sentries to kill on sight
>>
>>1193458
>>1193488

you decide to make your sentries be on the highest alert possible. and after expending 360 nutrients you have 20 fresh winter soldier eggs. You have them sent to the hatchery and expedite the process.

It was as you feared of the 25 eggs currently in the hatchery only 7 managed to hatch, the others died trying to overcome the grueling process of rapid cellular division. Your sentries detected something moving just outside their attack zone, it could be creature or several of them.

Will you bunker down and await for them to come to you or will you go out and meet their aggression. you have 4 slug throwers in the armory, they are not a powerful as they could be, metal is lacking in the hive and as such you cannot produce an item of exceptional quality. But it s better than having no weapons, equip them?

>Equip slug Thrower
>Hunker down to defend

>>
>>1193588
>>1193591

Your sentries again spot the creature it moves with purpose heading towards the entrance. It lefts its head from time to time as if tasting the air. Your sentries hurry to engage it but when they get close enough to combat range they are met with the creature's back. it acts as a shield and in one sweeping motions your sentries are cut in two.

not much later the main door starts to rumble and tremble as massive blows are dealt to it. your soldiers await instructions.

How will you arrange them?

>Four men fire squad with three backup supporters?
>call out all the workers to assist.
>Have the miners build a makeshift wall to the entrance of the throne room?

Your thinkers are afraid, you can hear their thoughts, they can calculate only one outcome to this. Death.

aim for the mouth I guess. Our guns are underpowered and this thing is built like a brick house. any part that doesn't look armored like the mouth and joints should be where we focus fire.

>Have the miners build a makeshift wall to the entrance of the throne room?
and then a spiked pit trap behind the throne room door as a last line of defense.

we'll save the workers to protect the throne room... also have them grab the thinkers and bring them into the throne room as well before the wall is built. If we live through this I do not want to rebuild the whole hive from scratch.

hell might as well, we're going to throw everything and the kitchen sink at this son of a bitch if we need to. If we got poison ready from the algae farms give that shit to our workers since I don't think we'll have time to get it to the warriors. Hell if we got poison go whole hog. put up poison dart traps around the outside of the throne room, poison the pit trap spikes. Hell cover our workers in the algae so if that thing eats them we can at least poison it. If we live through this I am definitely voting that we weaponize our queen as well. I don't care how unpractical it is, at this point I'll take anything, even a security blanky in the form of an armored and armed queen.

HIVE QUEST, AND IM NOT TOO LATE! YUS.

And everything is terrible, as expected.
Well this is pretty much a doomsday scenario for us, we might be doomed still.

I say we pile all of our workers behind our soldiers in a tight formation back from the entrance,

>>1193707
>Have the miners build a makeshift wall to the entrance of the throne room?
Probably pointless, if we hole up here and it makes it through all of our warriors we are dead. Honestly we should reserve 4 workers to help us escape out the tunnel to the livestock field, once we get there we need to just chow down and slaughter the whole herd for energy. If we cant beat this thing here and recouperate losses (including fucking trinity, I thought the little guys were supposed to be our throne workers damnit) Its game over and this other cunt wins.

Speaking of which, I seem to remember drones break down into a rage or stuppor when a rival queen tries to command them, normally this wouldnt be of use to us but maybe if we focus ourselves on the enemy one at a time we can slow them down.

Or maybe this is the end who knows?

The door took many blows from the enemy, and finally with one last cracking sound it gave out. The chitinous mass was not able to effectively absorb so much brute force, metal was in dire need.

As soon as the door gave out your soldiers fired, the slug thrower was a very primitive machine. A thorn launcher would have been better, but again you lacked metal. In three bursts the rounds left and traveled at 400 feet per second impacting on the armored plates of the enemy.

24 slugs in the space of three large and very fast steps, 48, 96... 127 slugs before the first soldier was caught and eviscerated. The enemy was bleeding profusely, and a soldier managed to get behind and fired to no avail, the armor was even thicker at the back. It swung with tremendous force and sent the soldier to impact against the wall. You felt as the armored chitin cracked and the soldier started to die, internal organs ruptured.

The two others frantically tried to stop the advance, slugs firing. They were hugged to death as they were crushed under immense power. Your three remaining soldier stabbed at it with a frenzy, one had its head ripped off, another crushed under a foot, and the last ripped in half.

Some time passed, and you saw the wall to the throne room crumble. There before you, stood this warrior without compare. your workers leaped and stabbed at it with abandon, the enemy collapsed crushing two workers, it twitched and then bleed out.

A most foul odor emanating from it, a stench you did not recognize. But you did know death, and this one before you was most dead.

(what to do now?)
>>
>>1193915

>>

>>
>>1193947
eat the dead
set every single thinker to the study of this new warrior
Lay as many worker eggs as we can, straight until we go into starvation
have the miners stop expanding the farms and just man them instead
flying workers seal the entrance
and then the last 2 of our regular workers should be busy helping the thinkers discect this monster.
>>
>>1193968
Nevermind the second to last one I didnt notice we were out of flyers, just split the normal workers between repairing the gates and helping the thinkers tear into the new threat
>>
>>1193947
fix the damn door asap. get spare workers to drag this thing off for the thinkers to study it. Lay more eggs. at least 10 for new warriors but don't rush these ones. Also once the farms are complete I think we should prioritize finding metal now as this is starting to get ridiculous. Then we can tunnel towards the crash site.
>>
Yknow, if this thing is infact the warrior drone of another queen... what does that mean about the keeks? Are they related? A new scavenger caste?

Im not going to make any brash assumptions, but if the keeks are related, this would add meaning to what we know about them so far.

They are unnaturally coordinated pack hunters, so maybe they are psychically attuned to each other, and if they are part of another hive, be it a queens brood or a force commanded by thinkers, they are probably trying to clear the planet of all this nasty homicidal fauna in preparation of hive expansion. Just thinking about how they were piling the dead makes me think either their command structure is based near the lake or they really dont need the food

you have 248 nutrients left.

You must deliberate how to deal with which eggs to lay and how many. Besides with only 6 workers your 3 farms will not yield their maximum amount. you need 12 workers to man your farms.

>egg door (50N) 2 workers to install.

Cost per egg per type:

Winter worker 8N
Winged Winter Worker 16N
Winter Soldier 18N
Miner 8N

>Have the thinkers study this creature. 3 thinkers will need 3 worker assistants. (1 day research )

Miners cannot attend the farms.
>>
>>1194035
4 warriors to use the slug throwers assuming they didn't get destroyed and as many workers as we can safely make. Also no don't rush these.

We can have 2 workers install the door and the other 4 can work on a farm until we the other workers hatch.

Miners will look for metal
>>
>>1194035
Alright so what is the variant that is dying due to cold?

Also, what is with the dice system, Is is best of 3 or are you doing averages or something? If it's the latter, I would request a change. Averages just results in eternal mediocrity.

>>1194035
Also, what is our current population? Just 6 workers? Or did anything else survive?
>>
>>1194055
It was our warriors, they couldnt handle prolonged exposure.

>>1194055

The winter Soldier variant was found the be flawed, the current thermal system cannot sustain it on long periods of outside use.

The dice are not on averages, its usually the best of 3 unless crits happen.

>>1194069

6 workers, 6 thinkers, 5 miners.

10 minutes of deliberation.
>>
>>1194083
maybe cut off 2 of those workers just so we can have some nutrients banked incase something else happens. other then that seems fine and I guess we'll just leave the thinkers alone until the workers hatch and can help them study.

Also didn't we fix that flaw in the warriors after we found it? I could have sworn we did.
>>
>>1194083
alright Ill put this plan forward then
Have our workers slaughter and bring back all the grazing cattle and then we lay
6 warriors
as many workers as we have nutrients for after the warriors
Thats the best we can do on short notice, can the miners do the slaughtering?

We desperately desperately need workers to man the fields and to help the thinkers research. not to mention the repairs.
>>
>>1194083
Alright, I'm fine with assigning 3 workings to assist the thinkers in researching the beast.

>The dice are not on averages, its usually the best of 3 unless crits happen.

HIVE GOTTA HIVE DOG.

We still have vespers to domesticate, and honestly even if they have a much poorer max yeild just the fact that they can be cultivated as we choose underground means they are superior for livestock in my book.

and fuck it. Kill all the cattle. As long as we won't be losing nutrients to spoilage.

well if we have two types of live stock I don't see much harm in eating one of them. Sure I'll go with this.

You lay your eggs and hope for a better tomorrow. 6 soldiers and 20 workers. It will take a day hatch them all properly. But you are confident on your ability to persevere.

You have the workers bring you the dead, and you swallow your pride and disgust and start consuming them. 60 nutrients all in all. your kind should have no idea or concept of disgust or true shame, but somehow you do. This is in a way troubling, but not immediate.

You send the workers out to slaughter the herding beasts you had worked to trap. you manage to obtain 600 Nutrients from them, all in all 12 beasts killed. You do hope to find more of them.

You hatch an egg for door replacement and send 2 workers on that task.

Currently you have 600 nutrients to use as you see fit. The other workers drag out the enemy and set it aside for the thinkers to ponder upon later.

since we now have our food issue dealt with for now. Study the body of whatever the hell attacked us and have the minors scout for metal.
>>
>>1194306
Uh aside from assigning 3 workers to helping research the enemy body and the remainder working the farm. I think we're done.
>>
>>1194306
not the worst haul, and Im glad there were only twelve of the buggers, even if we dont know how they breed.

Well first things first is how did this fucker find the hive, and where did it come from, we cant really spare workers from our meagre 6 to go track its origin but we can definately put a pin in that.. Beasties that large leave large tracks.

For the moment we should probably just rest and monitor farm construction, seeing as those worthless diggers arent good for anything else,

You send out your miners to find some metal, and you tell them to not come back unless they HAVE found some metal.

You assign all your four workers to assist your thinkers in finding out what just attacked you.
