It is the Year of Our Lord 1120. You are Victor Reis, a Knight-Captain of the Order of Brothers of the German House of Saint Mary in Frankfurt (The Teutonic Order.) You had come to the Holy Land after a request for aid from your brothers in the newly-formed Templar order, and traveled with them to a mountain pass Northeast of Acre, and joining a Saracen horde in battle there, suddenly found yourself in another world, along with your Teuton brothers and Templar allies.

Previously, on Fantasy Crusader Quest....

After running from the Wild Hunt from midnight to daybreak, you went to the village, and brought the bodies of your fallen brothers with you, for burial.
>>
>>1200580

"In your hands, O Lord,
we humbly entrust our brothers and sisters.
In this life you embraced them with your tender love;
deliver them now from every evil
and bid them eternal rest.

The old order has passed away:
welcome them into paradise,
where there will be no sorrow, no weeping or pain,
but fullness of peace and joy
with your Son and the Holy Spirit
forever and ever."

Father MacAodhagain raises his head, and your fellow knights do as well. Together, as one, you say the final word, the one that echoes with a certain finality.

"Amen."

Sighing, you look at your men. They're grieving, you can see it on their faces, but they're doing it their best to keep it in, if only to honor their fallen brothers' memories.

The burial was slow work, considering the exhaustion of your men. But with considerable help from the villagers, and with the determination of your brothers, they were put in the ground, a white cross marking their final resting places. You are saddened, obviously, but you have a duty to carry on, after what happened. No time to grieve.

Walking back to the village, you take in the silence of the forest around you. It's peaceful. You don't like it. It gives you too much time to think, and when you think, your thoughts go back to your fallen brethren. You'll have time to think on them later, when you get back to the camp, to bring them news.

Reaching the village center, you see Cellica slumped against the side of a tree, near where her white mare is tied, asleep. You were planning on bringing her with you to get the demon's heads, but she's sleeping. Maybe you should just go alone, or bring one of your knights. However, you don't think you should ask that of them. They're tired enough, and you said they'd have the day to rest.

[spioler]Sorry about the delay, something came up.[/spoiler]

Shaking your head, you simply walk over to Gunnar, untying him, and leading him by the reins. You'll let her sleep. She looks pretty comfortable, anyways, it'd be a shame to wake her up.

Getting on your warhorse with a grunt of exhaustion, you ride him over to where your men are resting, looking down at them. Pointing at a knight, a man not much younger than you, about Marcus' age, you say,

"Come with me. I need to retrieve something from the battlefield."

Looking at his friends, eyebrows raised, he says, "Aye, sir, just give me a moment to get my horse."

Waiting patiently for the man to mount his horse and lead him beside you, you motion forward, moving along the track east, the man riding alongside you, looking at you quizzically.

"Sir, if I might ask, what are we getting?"

Acknowledging his question, you answer, "We're going to retrieve the heads of the demon I slayed near the end of the chase. And possibly some of those black arrows that the fae were shooting at us. We need evidence, otherwise, some of the other captains might not believe my story without them. I mean, losing half our force in a strange land is provable, but being chased by the Wild Hunt? Sounds ludicrous, eh?"

Nodding, the knight says, "Yessir. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it meself."

Falling silent, the two of you ride on, looking at the black corpses of wolves, and the occasional horse in the bloody mud.

After a good bit of riding, you break the silence, and ask,

"What's your name?"

Surprised that you would even ask, the younger man gives you an uncertain grin, and says, "Leopold Kuechler, sir."

Raising an eyebrow, you say, "Of House Kuechler?"

He nods, saying, "Yessir. We've been your fathers' vassals for about thirty years now. I'm the second knight to join the Teutonic Brotherhood in his service."

"And what do you think of all... this?" You motion all around you, at the land, at the corpses, at everything.

Leopold takes a moment to think, and taking in the landscape, before answering.

"Well, me and the boys... we don't really know what to think. Before that speech you gave, back before we charged the Saracens, we thought we were going to die, but the way you spoke, the faith you have? Well, that kinda... inspired us to trust you. So, just so you know," Leo smiles, "we're behind you all the way."

>"Thanks, Leopold. I'll do my best to justify your trust in me."

"Thanks, Leopold. As long as we stay true, the Lord will be with us, worry not."

Smiling, he nods, the fires of faith kindled within him again.

So the men trust you, and are willing to die for you. Well. That's certainly encouraging, at least they're loyal.

After a few hours of riding and small talk about the homeland, and your respective families, you come across the body of the horse-and-rider demon.

Ugh. In broad daylight, it is much uglier now that you can see it properly. The muscle and sinew look almost rubbery, and the bone looks somehow... false. You can't think of another word to explain it. Leaping off Gunnar, you stride towards it, sword in hand. You shudder as you approach it, and Leopold shares your disgusted look.

"You killed that thing, sir? The world's better off for it, I daresay." You simply nod, and grip your sword tighter. This... is going to be disgusting.

Swinging downward at the cyclopic, fanged horse-head, you hack at the rubbery muscle, black ichor spraying everywhere. Beside you, Leo gets to work on the other head, grimacing.

It takes you a few minutes of bloody, disgusting work to work through the neck. Surprisingly, the bones give way easily, shattering with a single blow. Soon enough, you slice through the other side of the horse-neck. Separating from the body with a sucking noise, the head falls limp to the ground, oozing black ichor.

Looking at Leo, who has also finished with his head, you point at the head.

"Did you hear that? Ugh." Nodding, he picks up his head and looks to you.

Holding the head by the thin, greasy hairs, Leo asks, "So how are we going to carry these?"

>"Wrap them in our tabards, and keep them in our saddlebags."
>"Put them both in your bedroll, and put it in your saddlebag."

"Wrap them in our tabards, and keep them in our saddlebags."

You look sympathetically at Leo as he frowns. "This black stuff's going to stain something terrible..."

You take your tabard off, and wrap it around the horse-head.

"If it's any consolation, we can get it cleaned at camp."

Sighing, he nods, and wraps the man-head with his tabard. "Yeah, I know. But we'll stand out until then, and besides," he shows you the grim package, black ichor soaking the cloth of the tabard, "I have my doubts that this will ever come out."

Looking down at your head, you concede. He's probably right. You'll be able to get another, though. You had Edgar bring spares for a reason.

Opening your saddlebags, you put the heads securely away, and mount your horses.

"Before we reach camp, I'll need you to ride near the front of the column, so we can present the heads without delay."

"Aye sir."

The ride back is quiet, and somber, but you manage to make some small talk. Reaching the forest, you let out a sigh. You never thought you'd be comforted to enter the woods, but as long as you're not on that moor, you don't quite care where you are.

Birds chirp overhead, and sunlight breaks through the trees, leading to a peaceful atmosphere. This calms Leo down, visibly relaxing. As you approach the village, you say, "Alright, Leopold, dismissed."

Saluting, he drops off his horse, leading it by the reins. "Yessir."

And then he's gone, joining his brothers.

---------------------------------------

Walking back to where Cellica had tied her horse, you tie Gunnar next to her mare, and look around for the ginger elf. Ah, yep, she's still asleep. Wait, what- Some kids are peeking out from behind a nearby home, staring, wide-mouthed at her.

You sigh. What are you going to do about them?

>Absolutely nothing. Walk over to Cellica, and go to sleep next to her, leaning against the tree-trunk.

With mild annoyance, mostly borne from exhaustion, you wave in their general direction, sending them running off, talking amongst themselves about the 'elfy lady'.

Looking at Cellica, you briefly consider sleeping next to her, before deciding to lie on the grass nearby. It wouldn't be proper for you to be seen sleeping next to her, even if you did, earlier, let her sleep next to you. But that was just for support. You were both exhausted beyond belief, scared by the Wild Hunt, and saddened at the amount of death that your men suffered.

Right.

Lying down, you close your eyes, and sleep comes quickly.

-------------------------------------

"Hey."

You feel something nudging your shoulder, softly.

"Hey Victor..."

The nudging becomes more insistent, but still quite soft.

"Victor, wake up."

You groan, blinking the blurriness out of your eyes. Looking up, you see Cellica smiling at you.

"Ah! You're awake! You sleep pretty deeply, you know?"

Propping yourself on one elbow, you rub your eyes.

"Cellica..."

"...why did you wake me up?"

Cellica smiles, pointing towards something to the center of the village. A...table? And... your knights are sitting around it?

"The villagers made us dinner! C'mon, they're about to start, you don't want to go hungry!"

You look from Cellica to your men, and back to Cellica again. You could go eat. But alternatively, you could go back to sleep....

"Victor, c'mon!" Cellica shakes you as you lay back down on the grass, closing your eyes.

Sighing, you open your eyes and frown at her.

"I'm not going to get any more sleep until I go eat, aren't I?"

She flashes you a brilliant smile.

"Nope~"

Groaning, you stand up, and pop your back, stretching. Muttering incoherently, you follow Cellica to the table, where you are greeted by a small cheer for.... Cellica?

"Good job lass!"

"I knew you could do it!"

Even though she can't understand the words, as they're in German, Cellica basks in the obvious praise, and gives you a small, proud grin.

Sitting down on a bench in front of a wooden plate, filled with food, you ask Cellica, who sits next to you,

"How.... what?" You look at Cellica for a moment, confused, before the smell of the food on your plate makes you disregard any questions you had, and dig in.

"Ah- mrphfh screw it."

Tearing into your food, you see Cellica giggle as she begins to take small bites, explaining,

"You were sound asleep, and some of your men were trying to wake you up. They... actually woke me up."

You begin to laugh, but then remember that you have a faceful of food.

"So, even though we couldn't understand each other, I used hand signals to tell them I'd wake you up."

Ah, that explains it. Tearing into the meal, you see two of the villagers, in cooking aprons, watch you eat, appreciating the ravenous way you devour it. Giving them a brief thumbs up, before turning back to your food, shoving as much as you can in your mouth. God, you're hungry. You didn't notice it earlier, but after a good rest, it hit like a horse cart.

"... Anyways, thanks, Cellica, this is really great food. I'd have hated to missed it."

She takes a bite, and swallows, before answering, "No problem! You'd do the same for me, right?"

>"Of course!"
>"Yeah."

And what will you ask her?

You nod.

"Yeah. You know, in Germany, it's actually rude to leave someone out of a feast."

Cellica smiles. "Really? Now I know you won't leave me out of a meal!"

Taking another bite, you ask, "So, do you like my men? I know you can't understand them, but have they been getting along with you?"

"Oh, they've been delightful! They've helped me help the villagers put food on the table, and one even pulled out the bench, so I could sit down easier!" Cellica beams, looking at you. "Oh, oh, and one even took care of Solana for me!"

"Solana?"

Cellica looks confused for a second, but then realizes; "Oh! I never told you her name!"

Pointing to her white mare, she says, "That's Solana, my mare. I've had her for five years, now! She was a gift from my father!"

Raising an eyebrow, you ask, "Oh? And who is your father?"

Cellica freezes, smile wavering. "O-oh, he's no one important, just a hunter."

Coughing to disguise your laugh, you say, "I sincerely doubt that. But whatever, let's finish the meal."

Cellica chuckles nervously. "Hahah, yeah, let's... finish eating...."

Listening in to your men, you fortunately hear nothing about their fallen brothers, and instead, they're talking about the meal, the villagers, what they're going to do when they get back to camp.

Not dwelling on the thought any more, you finish your meal, and get up, looking for the cooks. There, sitting on a bench nearby, ready to take the tableware.

Seeing you get up, Cellica quickly stands up, smoothing out her shirt, walking next to you as you approach the cooks.

"Oh, those are the Iaiama siblings! They're really sweet, they cooked the meal!" Cellica whispers this, matching your pace.

"Thanks for the names, but I knew they cooked the meal. The aprons, remember?"

Cellica nods, smiling. "Well, I'm glad I told you something you didn't know! How do you do that, anyway, you always seem to know everyth-" She cuts off as you get nearer to the brother and sister that cooked your meal.

A man with a chiseled jaw, who looks more like a warrior, than a baker, and a soft woman who looks like she'd be more at home picking flowers in a field, dancing to some happy tune, than cutting apart dead animals and roasting their remains, stand before you.

I doubt this was done out of anything other than thanks, we did put our lives on the line to prevent them from coming to harm at the hands of the Wild Hunt.

If they ask for some small token, give it to them. It is only just.

If they want to join us, we must insist they be baptised. I am sure MacAdhogain will be delighted to proselytise.
Speaking of which, we must remember to have him take our confession. Harsh language and improper thoughts being the gist of it.

Looking at them, you say, in German, "Herzlichen Dank."

Confused, you repeat in Latin, "That, in my language, means 'heartfelt thanks.' Thank you for the food, it was amazing."

The siblings smile, genuine appreciation on their faces.

"It's nothing, sir, we were just payin' back what you did for us, 'tweren't nothin'."

Shaking your head, you say, "You didn't have to do any of this. And for that, I thank you."

Nodding, they say, "You're welcome, then." The man stands up, dusting off his pants. "Oh, and don't feel like you have to help with the table or anything, we've got it."

Hesitating, you ask, "Are you sure?"

Laughing it off, they say, "Of course, of course! You're probably exhausted! Go rest, go rest!"

"Well, alright then."

As you walk back to the table, Cellica looks at you. "Well, Victor, you're finished with your food, and I'm not. Why don't you go sleep, you look like you need it I MEAN WHAT NOTHING HAHAHAHAHAHAHA"

"Were you a lonely kid, Cellica?"

Cellica freezes, before putting on an unconvincing smile.

"Whaaat? N-no, I was always p-popular, had lots of friends..... Y-yeah!"

Raising an eyebrow, amused, you say, "Oh? And name five of them, then."

Stuttering, she counts her fingers, haltingly listing off names. "W-well, there' Kendel, Ayla... um.... Cl-Claire, and... uh...."

Throwing her hands in the air, she looks down at her plate, embarrassed. "Fine, I admit it! I... didn't have many friends. Happy?"

Shaking your head, you say, "I'm not happy that you didn't have many friends as a kid, Cellica, but I am glad you are telling me the truth. Why are you lying so much, if you're so bad at it?"

Looking at you, blushing, she says, "Well... I-I don't... I don't want to just tell you 'I don't want to talk about it,' because that'd make me feel like a jerk and you'd just keep asking and I don't want to lie because you're nice to me but-" She calms herself. "It's.... It's complicated, okay? I've got.... stuff I don't want to talk about."

Nodding, you get up, and pat her shoulder. "Alright, that's fine, Cellica. If you ever do want to talk about it..." you give her a meaningful look, "... I'll listen."

Smiling, she thanks you, and you walk away from the table, back to where you were sleeping before.

Lying down in the grass, you look up at the evening sky, through the tree cover, and sigh, tiredly. This was.... exhausting....

Sleep takes you quickly.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.

Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.

For some reason, these verses come to your mind.

Looking around, you see that you're in a small chapel, with stained glass and an altar in front of you, you sit near the back, in an odd stone pew. Around you sit shrouded parishioners, praying. From somewhere in the chapel comes the sound of a soft choir, although you can't see a choir box anywhere.

"Hey."

A soft, quick voice comes from beside you. You look, and see a small, bookish man in white robes sitting next to you, reclining almost irreverently.

"How's it going, tall, noble, and German?"

>"Uhhh.... fine?"

You raise a finger to your lips, frowning, and shush him.

"Shh! This is a church! People are trying to pray here!"

The white-robed man raises a single eyebrow.

"Well, it's been a while since someone's shushed me, but I suppose I can oblige you." He drops his voice to a whisper that nonetheless carries quite well in the echoing church. "So, Victor. What are you here for?"

Sighing, you say, "I'm here to collect my thoughts, and reaffirm my faith in god. The events that have been happening to me lately have been... hectic, to say the least."

The man nods. "Yeah, yeah, getting transported to another world, getting chased by mythical beings (Wod really is an as- jerk, isn't he?,) and losing half your men would do a number on a man's faith."

You stare at the man. How... does he know this?

He gives a quiet laugh. "C'mon, surely you can guess who I am!"

".... Archangel Gabriel?"

The man raises his finger and twirls it around.

"Ding ding ding! We've got a winner!"

Leaning forward, he says, "You would not BELIEVE the amount of people that mistake me for Jesus or Michael. I mean, I love those guys, but c'mon, why does everybody think I'm them? Nobody reads the name of the messenger anymore, all they care about is the kickas- awesome General of Heaven and their Savior."

Jaw dropped, you're simply staring at the Archangel, watching him ramble on.

"And to be fair, Jesus is pretty cool, but he wasn't some "gentle lamb," despite how many people call him the sacrificial lamb. He kicked some butt, turned society on its head, and inspired massive change in Jewish society. He isn't some sort of pacifist stoner- wait, that phrase hasn't been invented yet for you.... he isn't some sort of meek, passive guy, even though he is pretty chill. You'll meet him soon enough. Human lifespans are pretty short, especially in your line of work."

Pulling a book from seemingly nowhere, Gabriel continues. "ANYway, I've gotta question from the big man for you, two actually. I mean, he knows the answers, but he wants you to say it, so, here they are.

"Question one! What would you wish for if you could have anything? I know, I know, King Solomon and blah blah blah, it's still a valid question.

"Question two! What do you fear will doom your Crusader buddies? Like, what do you think's gonna be their downfall?"

Question One:

>"The strength to be a shield for the innocent."
>"Wisdom to see us through this."

Question Two:

>"Their zealotry. Faith is good, but it takes them to foolish extremes."
>"The strange magicks and spirits of this land."

"In regards to question one, I would wish for wisdom to see us through this. I know it's what King Solomon asked for, but it's a good request."

Scribbling down a few notes in the book, Gabriel nods.

"Good choice, good choice! The big guy upstairs is always glad to grant boons to wisdom. Prefers his followers to be smart and faithful, but he loves all of them equally. Alright, and next question?"

Contemplating this for a bit, you eventually come up with an answer.

"Their zealotry. Faith is good, but it takes them to foolish extremes. Like some of the Templars, they'd be just as likely to convert the villagers that we just met, as burn the village down for being pagan, and kill Cellica for being different. I just... I worry where it will take them, and I worry how it will affect the natives, who haven't heard of God."

Gabriel scribbles all of this down, and then puts the book away, tucking it in the sleeve of his robes.

"Very noble of you. And honestly, that's the main problem God has with some of you guys, you get carried away a bit too much." Waving, he says, "But I digress. So, Victor, are there any questions you'd like to ask me?"

>>
>>1206868

"Alright, first question. Would you like to go out drinking with me some time?"

Gabriel laughs, slapping his knee. "Ha! How very German of you! Sure, sure, we'll go out sometime, er, when you're not dreaming, of course, and get a few pints!"

Nodding, you ask, "Okay, so, why were we summoned to this foreign world? What is our purpose here? And do we have any ways to return home?"

"Well, you remember that sorcerer that your Saint kinda decapitated? Well, he was kind of a major cu- (sorry, in Church,) A really disagreeable individual. He, for some trite reason, hated the Wood Elves of the Mornaur woods. And so, he tried to create a spell that could get him an army. Well, he did summon an army, but... well, he got you guys. Unluckily for him. But lucky for the Wood Elves.

"As for your purpose here, well, that's really for you to decide. You coming here was the action of a selfish man, but maybe you can be a force for good in this world. (Boss knows they could sure use some help.)"

Gabriel looks mildly uncomfortable answering the last question.

"I mean, yeah, but inter-dimensional travel spells are pretty rare, and inaccurate, and most will kill you, so I wouldn't try it if I were you. This is your home now. Sorry."

You take a moment to let that sink in.

"Well, what's God's opinion on inter-species liasion? I mean, some of my men might marry elves or something. Did He create the Elves?"

Gabriel winks. "Ahh, talking about that cute redhead, eh? Well, you needn't worry, if Celly marries one of your boys, they won't be damned for eternity or anything. You took vows of chastity, not celibacy. As long as you- they get married, they'll be fine. And, yeah, he created the elves, but to them, he's known as Aeä the Worldshaper. Not YHWH or anything."

"Are our brothers safe? Were they hunted by the Wild Hunt as well?"

The Archangel shakes his head. "Nah, don't worry, they're safe. Only reason Wod targeted you was because you were passing through one of his old hunting grounds. He hasn't even used it in years, and he comes back at the first sign of activity. What a douche."

"How are things in the "real world?" What happened after we were teleported to this world? Are our friends and allies on Earth safe without us?"

Tilting his head, Gabriel says, "This world's just as real as Terra, mate. Anyways, after you were transported here, the Saracen army, (although you did a real number on them with that charge,) got through, and are besieging Acre right now." This fills you with a sense of panic, and a need to get back there before Gabriel puts an arm around your shoulders, giving you a side-hug. "Don't worry. I'm... not usually allowed to tell people the future, even that of other worlds, but.... Acre is alright. The remaining Templar forces manage to drive them off."

(cont.)
>>
>>1207213

Sighing with relief, you say, "So the Holy Land is safe from the Saracens, then."

Gabriel winces before recovering his brilliant smile.

"Yeaaaaaaaah. In your lifetime, at least."

Raising an eyebrow, you say, "Well, that's encouraging."

He shrugs. "Hey, I'm just the messenger. I ain't some guardian angel that makes ya feel fuzzy inside. Any more questions?"

You nod. "Just two. What does God want us to do here, and are there any Christians in this land, or are we alone?"

Gabriel waits for a second, as if listening to an unseen voice, and says, "Well, Big G says you can do whatever, as long as you act as a good Christian should. And naw, there aren't any other Christians, but there are... similar religions out there. You should like them, you'll find kinship with them."

Gabriel stands up, dusting off his robe, saying "Well, I think we're done here-" He tilts his head, listening. "Well, okay. I'll tell him."

Sighing, he says, "Sorry to reveal some faith-shaking cosmic truths to you, but here... (Boss, you sure about this? Well, alright....) Here, the Boss was just the first of many Gods. Yes, he's the first, but he decided to make smaller gods. Each equally valid. Sorry to tell ya. Hope it doesn't shake your faith too much. If it's any consolation, he IS the singular G-O-D of your dimension."

Placing a gentle hand on your shoulder, he gives you a kind look. "You're going to do great things, Victor. Know that we're rooting for you up here."

First things first, we can't just

We need to speek to Father MacAdhogain first. It's what every Christian man would do, and not every dream is certifiably a vision.

Then, we need to speak to the other commanders and tell them of our vision. The Archangel mentioned 'Christian-like' nations that we should seek out. It's the closest thing we have to a plan so far.

Lastly, we have our own existential crisis of course.
