You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

===============

You sip your tea and glance out the window between all the pages of paperwork you have to approve. It's a fine day outside and Degfford is thriving as always.

"Hello, your highness."

"Hello, Myrddin."

"I have a message from your wife."

"What is it, Myrddin?"

"She's in labour."

"Thank you for informing me, Myrddin." You carefully pack your papers. "We should get going then."

"I must say, you're taking this surprisingly well," Myrddin says. "I didn't think you'd be so calm about it."

"There's no point in panicking," you say. "This can't be worst than a battlefield."

"I'll tell you about Nimue's nephews and nieces some time," Myrddin says. "All twenty of them. They say it gets easier after the first one, but they're lying."

"It's not like you were the one giving birth," you say. "How would you know?"

"Your highness, I've tortured people to death who didn't scream as loudly as Nimue's sisters did."

Thankfully, Reagan is made of sterner stuff, or Myrddin doesn't know how to torture people. You suspect it's the former.

The midwife is there, along with Seren and Delyth. Reagan smiles when you step throw the doorway. Her face is more strained than usual and she's managing her breathing carefully, but all things considered, she's putting up with it well.

"Hello, your highness," she says. "I wasn't sure if you'd come yourself."

>"I'm rather obligated to be here, I think."

"Supporting you is the least I can do."

Under the midwife's piercing glare, you sit at Reagan's beside. You don't remember her having such as strong grip. You don't think Olwen has that strong a grip and she actually puts effort into physical training.

"Just don't get in the way," the midwife says after clicking her tongue. "It's better for men to just sit back and let the women work sometimes."

"He'll be good," Reagan says. "I'll scold him properly if he isn't. Olwen will be jealous. Again."

"Well, we wouldn't want that, would we?" You smile and kiss Reagan. "It'll be fine, don't worry."

"Of course it will." Reagan laughs softly. "I had so many people assassinated so this child could be born, I can't let anything go wrong now."

"I'll pretend I never heard that," the midwife mumbles.

>"You've been looking forward to this for a long time, then?"
>"Seren, what about you? Feeling nervous?"
>"What about you, Delyth? Excited?"

"You've been looking forward to this for a long time, then?"

"Oh, you know how it is," Reagan says between clenched teeth. "Most of the time, people only think about what's directly ahead of them, but when royalty is concerned, it's much easier to think two or three generations ahead. I think I was… 14 when I first thought about having children? I only started thinking about it seriously after I met you, of course."

"So it was on your mind during our courtship?"

Reagan snorts. "I'm not sure if it was really that much of a courtship," she says. "No matter our feelings, we're only using each other after all. That much won't change."

Reagan's right, in a cynical, jaded way, but you certainly won't complain no matter how much she uses you. Before you can tell her as much, you're cut off by the midwife.

"Yes, yes, that's all well and good, dear," the midwife says, "but you have work to do down here, so focus a bit will you?"

"I could use - ah! - a little bedside manner at the moment."

"There, there." Seren awkwardly sits onto your lap to stroke Reagan's forehead. "I'm right here."

The birth lasts… a while? Too long? Not long enough? Reports on how this part of the process are supposed to work, exactly, aren't all that clear. All you know is that Myrddin only lasts about ten minutes before he runs away. It's much ado about nothing, really. The bedsheets cover most of the blood. Reagan bears with it bravely.

The screams announces the birth of your child.

"And… oh, I see another one!"

"Godsdamnit!" Reagan's composure cracks for the first time since… since you've met her, probably. "I don't know how much longer I can put up with this."

Delyth quickly cleans up the first child.

You have twins; a boy and a girl. The midwife says… something or other. You only manage to catch every other word, but Reagan and Delyth are paying attention so it'll be fine. All you can do is stare blankly and not panic externally.

Unfortunately, someone takes your total complacency as a signal to put one of the babies in your arms. It's tiny and not nearly as cute as your mother led you to believe.

Reagan lies back on the bed, the other child in her arms. She seems quite grateful for the chance to relax.

"Pardon me your highness." Nimue carefully adjusts your hold on the baby. "There, that's better."

"… how long have you been here again?"

"Two or three hours?" Nimue shrugs. "Congratulations, your highness."

"They'll need names," Delyth says. "Have you thought of any?"

"The eldest son first," Reagan nods towards the one you're holding. That explains that. "It's only proper to start with the heir."

"How about Rhein?" You suggest. "It means 'spear.'" A bit martial for you, but…"

"Did you think I'd get jealous of Olwen?" Reagan asks. "It's a fitting name for someone who'll inherit your legacy."

Technically, you prefer the sword for ceremonial and symbolic reasons, but the spear is a superior weapon in general thanks to its simplicity and range. Stabbing people from far away is almost always better than stabbing them from closer.

"Here, hold your daughter for a bit." Reagan holds up her bundle and you carefully exchange babies while Nimue makes slight adjustments.

"What do you want to name her?" Seren asks.

>"Eira, after 'snow.'"
>"Maelona. It means 'princess.'"

"Aislin's a very nice name," she says. "What do you think?"

"It sounds lovely," you say.

"Have you been looking for a wetnurse?" Seren asks.

"What? No, no, of course." Reagan sounds absolutely scandalized by the notion. "I'm much too cautious to let some stranger around the babies."

"You're going to make me feel guilty for looking for one," Seren says.

"It's different for you," Reagan says. "You know what to do to get your children acclimated to poison. I wouldn't know where to start."

"… I'm not sure I'd go quite that far."

"My mother did the same thing and things turned out fine."

"Nursing herself or acclimating her children to poisons?" Delyth asks.

"Both," you say, "although I was quite a bit older when I started ingesting poisons."

It never hurts to be too cautious, after all.

The babies quietly fell asleep while you were talking. It'll take some time to figure out you're supposed to take care of them, but hopefully, you'll have it all sorted out by the time Seren and Esyllt are due.

In a few weeks. Or days.

You can worry about that later though.

"Awww, they are so adorable!"

Olwen giggling over a baby is probably not the weirdest fucking thing you've ever seen, but you can't remember anything worse at the moment.

"Please don't wake them up," Reagan says. "They haven't been fussy yet and I'd like to keep it that way."

You do have spare cribs for the twins since you knew you were going to need them anyway, so that's not a problem. You'll need to buy a fourth - possibly a fifth - but you can deal with that later.

"They are quite cute, aren't they?" Eleri leans over the side of Rhein's crib, carefully not to wake him up.

"You should enjoy it when it lasts," Nimue says. "They'll start crying again soon enough. Then the crawling will start once they get old enough."

"At least there'll be plenty of people around to look after them," Eleri says. "Esyllt, how long are you going to hide over there?"

Unlike everyone else, Esyllt pulled herself a chair to hide in the corner of the room farthest from the cribs. She's masking it well, but her eyes are filled with uncertainty.

>"Don't worry. I'm sure you'll get used to babies soon enough."
>"Don't be so nervous. There's nothing to worry about."
>"You don't have to force yourself if it's making you uncomfortable."

"Don't be so nervous," you say. "There's nothing to worry about."

"Of course there is!" Esyllt says. "They don't understand greed and they can't even talk! How am I supposed to deal with them?"

"They want food and they like to feel clean," Nimue says. "So long as you keep that in mind, it'll be fine."

"Didn't you once tell me kids were an investment?" Myrddin asks. "Just keep thinking of your future returns."

"I'm beginning to reconsider the value of those returns."

Nimue gingerly picks Aislinn up and somehow manages to shove her into Esyllt's arms without waking her up. Esyllt holds her stiffly until Nimue begins to adjust her hold and carefully explains how it's supposed to work.

"This may take some getting used to," Esyllt says.

"You'll have plenty of chances to look after them until it's your turn," Reagan says.
