You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

"The hell...?" You mumble as you flip through the files the Captain had secretly passed to you. Apparently, the spooks had reason to believe the Russians were being so antsy in the region because they were looking for a shipgirl. No words on her identity, but spies in Russia had been observing damaged Russian patrol ships being towed back into port.

Now, damaged ships wasn't all that uncommon, but it was the type of damage that had piqued the USN's interest. Most of the ships had been disabled by pinpoint, precise attacks right at their waterlines. Enough to slow down and cripple a ship through partial flooding, but not nearly enough to actually sink them. Definitely not the Abyssal MO.

So while you all OFFICIALLY out here to conduct freedom of navigation, you were also out here to "provide assistance" to "engaged Russian forces" if the need arose. Basically, find and extract the mystery shipgirl before the Russians did.

Oh right, and because going this far north put you all perilously close to the northern Dark Zone, Abyssal presence was high and ambushes were likely.

So... nothing too out of ordinary, actually.

Finally, the Captain had added a note that telling the rest of your squadron about the true nature of you mission would be at your discretion.

"Shiiiiiiit." You whistle.

"What's wrong?" White Plains raises an eyebrow.

"Looks like something rather important." Dorsetshire frowns.

"Yeah, sorta." You nod. "Turns out we're also supposed to be on the lookout for a shipgirl."

"A search mission?!" Repulse groans. "Whhhhhhhhhhy?!"

"Please, Repulse, show your juniors some level of professionalism." Dorsetshire sighs as she pats Repulse on the back.

"I... still don't understand what's going on." Yahagi looks around in confusion.

"Don't worry, all ya gotta do is follow my lead!" You grin.

"So, er, where ARE we going?" White Plains asks.

That's a good question...

"We'll try searching the south." You say, spinning around to the intended direction. "If this shipgirl really is on the run, she'd probably want to get as far from Abyssal and Russian waters as possible. That means she'd be heading southeast, into the open sea."

"That does make sense." Dorsetshire nods.

"Oh, oh! I can speed ahead as a vanguard!" Repulse volunteers, her red hairband twitching in excitement.

"Is it such a good idea to split up?" Yahagi voices her concern.

"That's true, Repulse might get lost if she strays too far from us." White Plains nods in agreement.

"Of course." Dorsetshire nods, making sure to keep close to Repulse, more for the battlecruiser's benefit than her own.

"Watch out, we have company." White Plains warns.

"Yeah, I see it." You nod as two contacts start closing in on your position at a high rate of speed.

And, as expected, a pair of MiG-29s shriek overhead at a low altitude in an obvious attempt to buzz you. You and your fellow shipgirls wince as they're low enough to hit you with their jet wash. You then watch warily as the MiG-29s prepare to circle around.

"They're no doubt reporting out position back to their main fleet." Dorsetshire sighs as she arms her cannons.

"Should I keep some of my fighters back to keep them in check?" White Plains glowers. As a carrier, she it was natural that she didn't take being overflown by planes that weren't hers very poorly.

"Keep your planes out on recon." You say to White Plains, putting a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. "You're just gotta put up with it."

"Fine..." White Plains sighs loudly as her Hellcats continue on their courses.

However, the calm is suddenly broken when the sky is filled with flak, black clouds polka dotting the sky. One of the MiG-29s is engulfed in the cloud and comes, flames trailing from its wings and engines, the cockpit glass cracked and shattered as it nosedives directly into the water.

"Queen's ass!" Repulse curses as she spins around, trying to find the source of the attack.

"Check fire! Check fire!" Dorsetshire yells angrily. "Who did that?!"

"I didn't fire!" Yahagi shakes her head.

"I didn't either." You add.

Wait a minute, that had to mean-

However, your train of thought is interrupted when you hear a roar of jet engines. The remaining MiG-29 begins diving down towards your group on an obvious attack run, no doubt believing you were firing on him.

...to clarify that post a little, GUARD is the military name for the International Aviation Emergency Frequencies that all aircraft, military and civilian, are supposed to monitor at all times.

And the SPY-1's total radiated power was 6MW on the original set in the 1970s; most likely, Hoel's is putting out somewhere around 30MW, at which point, there's a decent chance of sterilizing the pilot if he gets too close while it's running at full power.

"Wave off! Wave off!" You yell on the emergency channel. "We weren't the source of the fire! Wave off!"

However, the MiG-29 continues on its dive, the pilot either unable or unwilling to listen to you. The Russian plane's nose flashes as it spits cannon fire at your squadron, but its hastily aimed, cutting a line between you and Yahagi. The jet then screams past, looping around and gaining altitude to escape the clouds of flak that were still sporadically exploding in the airspace. It didn't take a strategist to realize he would be coming back for another attack run, and he'd be using something packing a bit more punch than a cannon.

"Everybody, full steam and full evasive maneuvers!" You warn. "He'll be using missiles or bombs next!"

The MiG-29 launches a pair of missiles and then begins to pull away, his ammunition apparently spent. The missiles come shrieking in, and your radar begins screaming warnings at you about the incoming threats. Of course you were fucking aware of it!

You immediately launch two of your ESSMs, which lurch out from your VLS cells and streak towards the incoming Russian missiles. Both are successful interceptions, but one of the missiles gets dangerously close to Dorsetshire, exploding mere meters from her as your ESSM slams into it. While avoiding a direct hit, you can see that Dorsie had still suffered some shrapnel and fire damage, judging from the cuts and burns on what was once a pristine uniform.

"Dorsie, you okay?" You ask with concern.

"Dors, you're hit!" Repulse gasps.

"It's just superficial." Dorsetshire assures you all as she brushes herself off, though its clear the damage was bothering her. "I suggest we find the source of that AA fire."

"I already tasked some of my planes on it." White Plains says.

"I think we should keep moving." Yahagi looks to the north with concern, the retreating MiG-29's engine contrails still barely visible. "That pilot is bound to report this back to his superiors. We may have the entire Russian fleet bearing down on us."

"We have to find out did that shooting." You grimace. "It might be the shipgirl we're looking for, it might not, but regardless, whoever it was just shot down a Russian plane. If we don't find it, the Russians will think it's us."

"An international incident is the last thing we need." Dorsetshire nods.

"I'll go on ahead and look for her!" Repulse offers. "I think I saw the shots coming from the northeast!"

"No, you're staying with the group." Dorsie grunts as she grabs Repulse by the collar.

"I think I found them!" White Plains' eyes flash, and then she frowns. "An Abyssal force, mostly destroyers and cruisers, but they've got two Princesses."

"Type?" You narrow your eyes.

"Once is the good old Destroyer Princess." White Plains frowns as she closes her eyes, observing through her own planes' vision. "The other looks to be a type of destroyer but I've never- AGH!"

White Plains winces as if in pain.

"What happened?" You rush up to her.

"I just got caught off guard, but she shot down my scout." White Plains' glowers. "There's no doubt about it, only radar guided systems have that sort of accuracy. She might be some sort of AA-focused Abyssal."

Wonderful.

"So what do we do?" Yahagi crosses her arms. "Are we going to engage them? Or leave them for the Russians to handle?"

And that's when your radar begins to ping from contacts. You look to the southeast, were you were detecting the faint signals of Abyssal planes and shells in the air. A battle of some kind, definitely, but you couldn't tell who was involved. Too much interference and too many surface contacts mixed together. "C'mon, Rep, we'll push on ahead!" You cackle as you rev up your engines and proceed at full speed.

"Repluse moving in to engage!" The battlecruiser begins to pick up momentum as well. "Maybe I'll actually get the battle I was looking for!"

However, as the two of you proceed, you could see signs of a heavy, pitched battle. The water was slick with oilblood and corpses of Abyssals, both beast and humanoid, were seen floating, having been utterly pulverized by some unknown force.

Actually, you were curious as to what killed these Abyssals, as it didn't look like they were killed by any sort of gun or explosive. Some kind of close combat weapon perhaps? This was definitely the work of a shipgirl, and you think you could gather enough clues to figure out her identity if you had the time. You shake the random thoughts out of your head and keep pressing forward, Repulse close to your side. Eventually, you start coming up to a thick black smokescreen, almost as solid as a wall. You're not sure whether it was set down on purpose or a side effect of the battle, but you push through anyways, your radar showing you the way.

This close, you can start getting a clearer picture of the battle going on. You could see multiple squadrons of Abyssal fighters, no doubt scrambled from a nearby Wo or two. There were also multiple Abyssal surface combatants. A mix of destroyers, cruisers, and even a battleship! They all seemed to be clustering around a central point...

You radar then warns you of incoming Abyssal fighters, which are quickly intercepted by White Plains' own Hellcats as they juke and dance through the sky trading bullets.

"They're on to you now!" White Plains warns. "Whatever you do, do it now!"

"All right, I'm gonna go wreak some havoc in their lines." You grin as you ready your guns and missiles. "Hopefully give an opening for our little friend to escape out of."

"You need my assistance?" Repulse puffs up with smug pride. "Dealing with cruisers and destroyers is something of a specialty of mine!"

"Just stick with me, Rep!" You grin. "We'll take them out on the move like an old fashioned gangster driveby!"

"Pretty cocky for a yank!" Repulse laughs. "I like it!"

Once again, you draw as much power as you can from your engines as you pulse forward, your guns firing in all directions. Behind you, you can hear the louder and deeper booms of Repulse's battleship grade guns as she targets the cruisers...

You dive into thick of the destroyer squadron, guns firing in all directions as your shells punch through their thinly armored shells, popping them like big, oil filled balloons. Meanwhile, Repulse drives in as well, her big guns completely blowing apart a Ne-class cruiser into an oily mist.

However, the second Ne-class takes a shot at you with its 8-inch guns. You yelp as you quickly strafe to the side, the shells clipping your Rig and taking a chunk of hull off.

"Goddamn!" You hiss.

Thankfully, the battleship still seemed to be occupied fighting the shipgirl. There was still that remaining Ne-class and four more destroyers left, but their encirclement had definitely thinned out. Maybe you could find an opening with Repulse's help...

You decide now was the time to break through. It was now or never. Any longer and the Abyssals might close the gaps! So you push your engines to the limit to try and squeeze through...

>FATE POINT USED
>You currently have 1 point!

An expertly placed volley from Repulse blows off the top half of the remaining Ne-class, giving you the opening you need to break through the Abyssal lines. Through the thick smoke, you make a beeline for the Abyssal battleship, a Ta-class from the looks of it. She was pretty messed up, as you could see a number of puncture wounds its its body and Rig. The Abyssal fires off a volley into the smoke.

And then you hear thunder and see flashes of lightning. Definitely not from the Ta-class' guns.

And that's when you hear it. An odd anthem chanting over your radio, breaking through event he powerful Abyssal interference.

STORM CLOUDS FIRE AND STEEL
DEATH FROM ABOVE MADE THE ENEMY KNEEL

FIGHTING, POWER AND GRACE
DEATH FROM ABOVE IT'S AN ARMY OF WINGS

And that's when you a spear, a honest to god fucking spear, lance out of the smoke. Tied to the point was a red and white pennant fluttering in the air as the spearhead punched into the Ta-class' shoulder, forcing it back.

And an armored, winged shipgirl, like none that you had ever seen, emerged from the smoke...

>And that's it for tonight! As always, the next thread is next week, and don't forget TITANFALL on Saturday!

Fun fact, the Grom class DDs can also be considered "Raiden" as well.
