"I spy with my little eye... something that iiiiss... red" Cheska says.
"Is it that bird over there?" You ask.
"No it's not that bird over there" She says. "I can't even see any birds over there"

"Well it's red" You say. "And kinda small"
"That's not it" She says.

"Alright then... is it... that red bird?" You ask.
"Where are you finding these birds!?!" She asks.
"In the bushes up that way" You say.
"It's not a damn bird!" She says.

...

"Is it the sunset?" You ask.
"Yes it's the sunset" She says. "You win. We've been at this for hours and I'm sick of it now"
"Yeah I'm kinda sick of it too" You say.

"You would be. With your friggin' 'spot everything' eyes..." Cheska says. "It's like challanging a horse to a foot race..."
"I once raced Marybell, does that count?" You ask.
"She was chasing you, not racing you" She says. "So no"
"Dang..." You reply.

"Think we're almost there?" You ask.
"I'd say so" She says. "Given that you can see the damn thing over there"

You look over to where Cheska points, and sure enough there's a fairly large building.

"That's it?" You ask. "I thought it was a church when I first saw it"
"It is a church, technically" She says. "The Inquisition might be bastards, but they're still a part of the Holy order"

"Huh" You say, as something starts tugging at your ear. "Stop that, Cheska"
"Not me" She says.

You turn to see Coral flying beside your head, doing her best to keep up. You ease up on the throttle as you reach up and give her a hand to rest on.

"Coral... what's up?" You ask.

Coral points back, so you slow down further and look behind you.

"They stopped" You say
"I wonder why" Cheska says. "Do we keep going?"

Coral shakes her head.

"Guess not..." You say. "Let's go see what's up"

"What's the deal? We stopping for dinner?" You ask.
"I wish" Meyu says.
"So what's wrong?"

"Engine's been sputterin'" Meyu says.
"Is that bad?" You ask.
"Means it's not getting the intake it needs" He says. "Not enough mana in the air, and I'm starting to feel it too"
"Not enough mana in the air... is that even possible?" You ask.

"It shouldn't be" Derrick says. "The one time I remember feeling like this was in Mortifas... but that was because the air was saturated with Chaos"

"Doesn't feel like that to me" You say.
"So it's not the same..." Derrick says. "Something's going on, and if I were a betting man I'd put coin on it being something in the stronghold"

"You'd probably win that bet" Cheska says. "Feels like something's sucked all the mana out of the air to me..."

"I'm gonna go ahead and take a look" You say, as you walk back to the Rook. "If it looks like nothing, I'll send Coral back. If not..."

"You're not gonna try and take on the whole place yourself, are you?" Meyu asks.
"If there's a chance that all of you guys could die by stepping inside, yes" You reply.
"Well then, I admire your courage" Meyu says. "But..."

"Relax. If you guys would die by stepping inside, I doubt anyone in there could put up much of a fight" You say.
"Just be careful" Derrick says.

You nod, and head back to the Rook.

"Ahem" Cheska says.

...

Oh yeah.

"I thought so" She says. "What'll I do?"

You'd rather not take her in there... you do have the keystone to unlock the shackle. You wouldn't have to remove it permanently, just put it on someone else for now.

But that would involve showing Cheska that you have the keystone on you. You doubt she'll use that information against you, but...

You reach into your pocket and pull out the keystone, tapping it to your shackle and unlocking it. You then toss it to Derrick.

"You're in charge of the Devil for a while. I'll be back" You say.
"Oh, uhh... okay" Derrick says, as he fumbles with the shackle and clicks it onto his wrist.

You continue on your way to the Rook, saddling up and preparing to head off, when someone claps your shoulder.

"Hold up there, got something for you" Paula says, as she hands you a... thing.
"What is it?" You ask.

"Good luck charm" She says. "Flit made it out of a tree shoot. Everyone on the squad has one, so she figured you should have one too"
"Thanks, err... tell Flit that I said thank you" You say, as you take the small wooden ring.

"Alright, that's all" She says. "Go get em"

You nod, pocket the charm, and turn the throttle.

I'm guessing that the Inquisition finally got a demon portal up and running, and it's either empowering them, or sucking them dry.
>>
You shoot towards the stronghold at full speed, arriving in no time at all. Just out of sight of the gate, you pull off the road and dismount

The air here feel strange... like it's somehow dead.

And it's quiet. This whole trip you've been hearing birds and bugs and all sorts of sounds. But here there's nothing, not even the wind through the trees...

You don't like it.

Some small part of you is telling you that you should run away, get back on the Rook, turn around and never return. But you stifle that part as you urge yourself forward.

You keep your mageblade in your hand, ready to activate it at a moment's notice.

Coral stays on your shoulder, keeping herself partially hidden behind your head. You think she might be scared...

"I don't like this either..." You say, as you reach up and stroke her hair to try and calm her. "Tell you what, when we get back to town we can both have ice cream"

You take a breath, and get to work.

There doesn't appear to be anyone standing guard at the front doors.

...

No, there's definitely someone there. Blonde hair, shining armor... Caiah? What's she doing here?

"Caiah?" You call out.

Caiah startles, and looks back. "Oh, Yuu" She says, breathing a sigh of relief. "You scared me there, I thought I was alone out here"
"Me too" You say. "What brings you here?"

"The anomaly present here" She says. "You?"
"I came to beat up everyone in this building" You say.
Caiah laughs. "I fear someone may have beaten you to the punch" She says.
"All the same" You say. "What happened here?"

"I have suspicions, but nothing concrete" She says. "My first thought was that they opened a portal which drained the mana and killed everyone inside, but..."
"But?" You ask.
"There's movement inside" She says. "Lots of movement"

"You can tell that from here?" You ask.
"An ability of mine" She says.
"Can I do anything like that?" You ask.
"I don't believe so" She says. "You've got your own unique skills, though. Speaking of, you may want to turn that on"

You nod and activate your blade. "Any idea what's in there?" You ask.
"We'll find out soon enough" She says. "Something's coming"

Caiah pulls up her shield and puts herself between you and the door, while you get ready to hit whatever is coming...

Something crashes through the door, its movements are clumsy and its attacks look more like flailing...

Caiah keeps her shield up, lunging forward and bashing the creature back, before twisting and bringing her sword around to slice into its chest. The creature stumbles back and collapses.

"What is that thing?" You ask.
"I... have no idea" She says.

You both look down at the creature. It looks like it might have been a man at some point, but it has weird growths all over it. Its arms are much larger than a normal human's, and its fingers end in claws that look more like fangs. Its face is twisted, whatever features it once had now gone.

"Is that a mouth on its stomach?" You ask.
"And an eye on its shoulder" She says. "And another mouth down on its thigh"

You look down to its leg. Looks like the mouth also chewed a hole through his-... it's pants.

"Just what the hell is going on?" She asks.

The creature groans, and tries to raise its hand.

"It's still alive" You say.
"That should have been fatal" Caiah says. "At least, on a normal creature..."
"I think we're dealing with anything but" You say.

"I'm going to look inside" She says. "Coming?"

"Are we not killing this thing?" You ask.
"I assumed you'd do it" She says. "Demon Star should do the trick"

"Alright" You say.

Caiah walks inside, leaving you with the creature.

The eye on its shoulder never once leaves you, and you hear groans coming from the mouth on its stomach.

It's strange... it's almost like it's in pain...

You thrust your mageblade into the creature around where its heart should be, and create the splits to make the demon star.

The eye shuts. The creatures writhing stops. Whatever it is, it's dead this time.

You step past it and into the Stronghold.

Beyond the doors is what looks like a church... after an earthquake.

"What happened here?" You ask.
"Looks like the creature might have trashed the place" She says.
"I think it might've been more than one" You say.
"Probably" She says. "There are more of them further in, be ready"

You nod, and follow her as she heads to a door at the back of the church area.

So how come the regular demons don't absorb chaos but we pure demons can?
>>
"So if you're here, does that mean Terry is too?" You ask.
"It's a safe bet" She says. "And if he isn't, then this still has something to do with him, I'm sure..."

You nod in understanding. "And what about that thing you did in Mortifas, where you warped the floor to get us out. What was that?" You ask.
"Another ability of mine" She says.

"I don't suppose..."
"No, I don't think you can do that either" She says.
"Man..." You say. "What did you mean when you said that I had my own skill then? 'cause it kinda feels like I got shafted in that department"

Caiah hold her hand towards the wall as she walks, and the wall bubbles out towards it. "I can only use soul to manipulate and warp matter" She says. "It has it's uses, yeah. But I can't do anything like firing bolts or waves..."

"So that's my special thing?" You ask. "Seems knda bland..."
"For now, yeah" She says. "But you're just learning. Nobody starts off as a master"
"Good point" You say.

The two of you continue in a little ways, before something occurs to you.

"Where are we going anyway?" You ask.
"I'm not sure" She says. "I've been taking us to where most of the creatures are, since that's probably where we want to be... why, is there anything you need to do?"

"We could just bring the building down..." She says, as though it never occured to her.
"After those 2 things, yeah" You say. "Coming?"

"I'd rather not split up" She says. "You know the way down?"

"Alright. The ground isn't too far, but you'll still want to brace yourself for the landing" She says. "You go down first. It's easier for me if I can just close up the hole after I jump in"

"Alright" You say. "Here goes..."

You hop into the hole and roll after you hit the ground, which is a bit further than you thought it'd be.

Looking around, you see that you're in some kind of big room... full of bodies.

You look around, and see corpses just about everywhere. Looking down, you notice that you only narrowly avoided landing on one.

Before the bile can rise into your throat, you notice something. Leaning down next to the nearest body, you put a hand in front of its face.

"Breathing..." You say.

You hear Caiah landing behind you. The hole above closes shortly after, blocking out the little light it provided.

"What the fuck? Is this some kind of dumping ground?" She asks.
"No. These people are still alive" You say.

Caiah steps up beside you.

"Feel it" You say. "This one's still breathing at least..."
"For now" She says. "This must be the dungeon then... what did you come down here for?"

You scan the room with your eyes, though in this darkness it's difficult to make out the people's faces.

But you do spot one familiar thing...

You walk over to the wall where you see an angel slumped over. You only noticed her because the while of her wings stood out so much.

You put a hand on her shoulder and gently push her up against the wall. It's definitely the angel who was travelling with Storm... Michaela you think her name was.

Unfortunately you don't see Storm anywhere... Damn. You were hoping he'd be nearby.

"Who... 's there...?" Michaela mumbles.
"You're awake?" You ask.
"Am... I...?" She asks.
"Do you know where Storm is?" You ask.
"Storm... took..." She says. "Dunno... where..."

You frown. They took him, but she doesn't know where... at least you think that's what she's saying. You doubt she'll know what happened here, so you let her rest back against the wall and stand up.

"Your friend's not here?" Caiah asks.
"I'm afraid not" You say. "Let's go"

You start to walk away, but a gentle tugging on your pant leg stops you.

"I... die...?" Michaela asks.

You lean back down. You catch yourself before telling her that 'everything will be fine'. Last time you said that, things... didn't go as planned...

"Don't worry" You say. "Just sit tight, I'll be back"

Michaela closes her eyes. You observe her for a moment to make sure she didn't just die on you, and then head back to Caiah.

"Let's go" You say.

Unfortunately Caiah couldn't warp the ceiling down without running the risk of crushing someone, so you're stuck taking the stairs back up.

"So who's Storm? A friend of yours?" She asks as you make your way up.
"Not exactly" You say. "An acquaintance, more like. Me, him and another friend of mine have a few unique things in common, so I'd like to keep him alive"

"Ah, I see" She says. "So who was that girl?"
"Michaela" You say. "Friend of Storm's"
"Think he's still alive?" Caiah asks.
"I hope so" You say.

"So the next place was..." Caiah says.
"The Grand Inquisitor's chambers" You say. "We keep going up from here. If what Altea told me was right, then his chamber is on the topmost floor"

"Ugh..." Caiah says. "Days like these make me wish I didn't wear armor like this"
"Is it heavy?" You ask.
"Not once you get used to it... it just makes stairs annoying" She says.
"You can't use that warp thing to make the stairs move you up?" You ask.

"That'd take more energy than it'd save" She says.

"I sincerely doubt that" She says. "Personally I think he's just a madman who got his hands on a little bit too much power"

"So he's never used anything but the mageblade?" You ask.
"Not against me" She says. "I've always wondered why... I mean, it's obvious that he can do more. He just doesn't..."

You put your ear up to the door and listen.

"Hear anything?" Caiah asks.
"Shouting" You say. "Sounds like... Terry"
"What's he saying?" She asks.
"Hang on..."

"See, I warned you about this didn't I?" Terry asks. "I said, VERY clearly 'you can use this ritual, but you cannot perform it yourself, you lack the strength'. I even gave you a list of people who DID have the strength, but nooooooooo. Grand Inquisitor Arlen had to see for himself what happens when you play with interdimensional fire!"

The response comees as a pained groan.

"Bet you're sorry now!" Terry shouts. "You've ruined this entire arc! The siege of this stronghold was to be an important event, involving many difficult yet still winnable fights, and the bringing of justice against your once great order"

You hear more pained, frantic groans.

"But instead, I get you" Terry says. "And don't fool yourself into thinking you're worth even half of what you've cost me! I had a lot riding on you lot, and you pissed it all down the drain! And while I'm on the subject of pissing, are you going to listen at the door all day?"

You open the door sheepishly.

"To be fair, you were on a roll there, and I was hoping you'd say something worth overhearing" You say.
"Spare me. That entire tirade was full of things you weren't supposed to hear" Terry says.

Inside the room, Terry is sitting on a grand, throne like chair. In his hand is his mageblade, which stretches across the room and splits into 4 to pin each of what you assume used to be the Grand Inquisitor's arms...

"But now that you're here, I can leave" He says. "This place both angers and bores me. I have need of some new scenery before I start needing blood-pressure medication"

"You think I'll just let you leave?" You ask.
"You think you can stop me?" He replies. "If you can defeat the not-so Grand Inquisitor then maybe, just maybe I'll take you seriously next time. Until then you're little better than fodder. Fodder with potential, but fodder nonetheless"

"What do you mean?" You ask.
"Perhaps I'll answer that next time" He says. "If I remember, I am so forgetful sometimes... but until then-

Terry waves his hand upwards, and a black, shadowy arm extends from his shadow. It rises up until it's taller than he is, then rakes the air with its claws on its way back down. The claws leave a shimmering tear in their wake, which Terry steps towards.

"Tata" He says, as he steps through.

"Wait!" Caiah says, as she rushes towards the tear. "Shit... Yuu, can you handle things here? I have to go through that!"
"Go, I can probably do this" You say.

"Good luck" She says.
"Right back at you" You reply.

Caiah jumps after Terry through the rapidly dissipating tear, and it shuts behind her.

You don't get much time to wonder just wha the hell that was, as the not-so grand inquisitor finds his feet.

Arlen is a monster now... he stands at least 2 feet taller than you, with 3 huge arms than end in clawed fingers. He stumbles for a moment, as all the eyes on his body search the room, and settle on you.

"Ah... aaaaaaahhhh" His many mouths groan in unison, giving his voice a strange, distorted tone. "Wh-what's... where... must feeeeeeed. HUNGRY. AAA-AAAAAAAAHHHHH"

"WHERE AM I?" It shouts, as it charges you. "THE PAIN WON'T STOP!"

You sidestep its charge, and it crashes into the wall. You just barely manage to duck under its arm as it swipes you, but you're not fast enough to get away as its oddly placed third arm slams down on your back.

The hit puts you down on all fours, and it follows up by kicking you so hard that it sends you flying.

"AAAAAAAI CAN'T BREATHE"

You hit the ground halfway across the room, tumbling until you can stop yourself and scramble to your feet-

Too slow.

It tackles you as soon as you're up, crashing you into and then through the wall. As you both fall out of the tower, it tries to grab at you.

You however, try to get your mageblade into the wall... or you would, had you not dropped it at some point...

Without the blade, you try in vain to find a handhold, before hitting the roof with an unceremonious 'thud'.

You feel pain everywhere, but you know that the creature landed somewhere nearby.

You have to get up.

Rolled 37 (1d100)

You try to lift yourself up on your hands, but a sharp pain through your right arm puts a stop to that. You might have broken it... Emi is not going to be happy when you come back with a busted arm like this...

But she'll be even less happy if you don't come back at all, so you have to get... up...

You hear the thumping footsteps of the creature as it gets closer. As they start to pick up speed, you roll to the side, narrowly avoiding its fist as it crashes into the spot where you were just laying.

"NNNN-NNOT RIGHT"

You kick yourself to your feet and jump back again as it flails in your direction.

"WHERE ARE MY MEN?"
"Shut the hell up, will you?" You say.
"HERETIC"

Now that you can see it, it looks like it didn't come out of the fall unscathed. But its injuries are rapidly disappearing, while yours remain...

"That's just cheating..." You say, as you reach into your pocket and pull out your spare mageblade. Your right arm is as good as useless, but you can make do with this... you hope. "Come on, you ugly asshole. Let's dance"

"3 arms to my 1, and regeneration on top of that..." You say. "Kind of an unfair advantage..."

The creature screams and charges, and you do the same... without the screaming.

As you get close, you vault over it and twist yourself in an attempt to sever its third arm. Your blade hits its mark, but the cut isn't deep enough.

The creature's bones feel like they're much harder than normal. Too hard for you to chop through, at least.

That's fine... you can work around it. Just chalk it up there with all the other disadvantages...

"Stop whining" You tell yourself. "You can do this"

The creature finally manages to halt its charge, and it immediately turns and comes back.

You'll need to go for the joints and squishy bits. As it stands, you won't get a killing blow past all those arms... you just have to find an opening somehow...

You run to the side as it charges, circling it and firing off soul bolts and waves. Not at any spot in particular, you're only trying to hit it and put it off balance.

They're not really all that effective anyway... Like throwing rocks at a boulder to knock it over.

You laugh at yourself. Maybe shooting beams isn't so great after all...

Well, not the way you're doing it now, anyway.

Remembering when you first made the Soul Bolt, tightening up the released energy to give it more force. It was a lot like the mageblade...

Maybe you can sharpen it, too.

At this point it's worth a shot.

Rolled 46 (1d100)

You fire off another burst of soul, doing your best to sharpen it before it leaves your hand.

It hits, and it was definitely sharper than a bolt. But it wasn't enough.

You're forced to dodge again, as the creature wheels around and smashes the ground. You jump back to a spot where you think you're out of reach, but it lunges forward and grabs you by your broken arm.

You grit your teeth as spots fly across your vision, and then kick its stomach to try and get it off. Your foot lands in one of its mouths, and it starts trying to chew...

"Damn it... fucking GET OFF"

You slice into the creature's elbow, not deep enough to sever the arm, but you do enough damage to make it let go. Then you shoot a slightly sharper soul bolt into one of its eyes, forcing its mouth to release your foot as it reels back in pain.

You find your feet and let loose another flurry of bolts. You don't care if they're sharp or not, they just have to hit.

It's not enough to keep it back, as it screams again, flailing against your assault and advancing on you.

You have to kill it this time.

You take a breath to steady yourself. Your arm hurts like hell, your legs feel like bricks, your head is pounding, and to be honest you feel like you could use a nap... and a meal.

But you have to fight right now, so you put all those things out of your mind.

Making a new spell isn't working, so you won't rely on that.

Even if Coral immediately went to get help, it won't be coming any time soon with the carts out of commission, so you won't rely on that either.

All you have is your blade.

You lengthen it out until you think it's long enough for what you want to try, then you run at the creature.

As you run, you fire a pair of bolts at its eyes to amek it guard itself, and more importantly to blind it.

When it realizes what you're doing, it's too late. You lunge forward and stab at its heart... only for it to block with its stupid third hand...

It grabs you by the leg and tosses you up into the air like a ragdoll, and as you come back down you silently thank Rhea for the practice she gave you in this regard.

You land on it blade first, burying your mageblade to the hilt in its shoulder, before hitting it with Demon Star.

It lets out a scream, stumbling about as you make more and more blades shoot out from inside its chest.

You lose count of how many splits you create by the time the screaming stops. Once it does you pull your blade out and drop off of it, stumbling back as you try to catch your breath.

But it doesn't fall down... instead it shambles forward like a mindless zombie.

"Oh, come on!" You say.

Unbothered by your annoyance, it continues forward. The wounds you made aren't regenerating, but it definitely isn't dead yet...

"Fine, you wanna make me work for it? I'm game" You say. "Bring it on you-"

*THUNK*

You're cut off by the sight of a wooden arrow burying itself into the side of the creature's head. The arrow is of a familiar make, with a leaf at its tail instead of feathers...

You blink a few times in amazement, and turn to the arrow's origin. You can just barely see Flit, waaayyyyy up the road.

As the creature falls to the ground, you breathe a sigh of relief and give Flit a smile and a thumb's up... then you remember that your arm is broken and wince in pain...

You look back at the once Inquisitor's body. Not moving, not breathing... definitely dead.

You'll still want Cheska to burn the body, though... and maybe the rest of the building, once you've gotten all the people out.

...

You never did find Storm... but you'll have to worry about tha later. Right now you need to find a way down from this roof that doesn't involve jumping or using your right arm...

"Hold still!" Emi says.
"It feels weird" You say.
"It's going to feel weird. Mending bones is a difficult process, so will you hold still?" Emi says.

You turn away from Emi and try to take your mind off the weird tingling sensation in your arm. Coral is resting in your lap, having earned a nap.

"How's the arm?" Meyu asks.
"Wondering if I should just cut it off..." You say.
"Oh, hush. You're going to be fine" Emi says.
"I know" You reply, "How does it look in there?"

Meyu sits down on a rock, resting his now blood covered blade beside him.

"Those things put up a hell of a fight, especially since we can't get our mana back after a few spells..." Meyu says. "None of 'em are as big as the one you fought, thankfully. And I haven't seen any of them regeneratin' either"

"What about the prisoners?" You ask.
"All alive, like you said" Meyu says. "Can't move on their own though. We'll need to find some way to get them out of here to a place where the air hasn't been drained for them to recharge"

"That's easier said than done..." You say. "Anything I can do?"
"Yeah. Sit tight and get that arm fixed, then maybe you can come help us clean these abominations out" Meyu says, before laughing as he picks up his sword and heads back to the stronghold.

"Don't worry, Yuu" Emi says. "We're almost done"

"Those other Pure Demons were here" You say.
"Caiah and... Terry?" Emi asks.
"Yeah" You say.

"What were they doing?" She asks.
"Caiah was here because of whatever sucked the mana out of the air" You say. "Not sure why Terry was here, but he definitely had something to do with it"

"What makes you say that?" She asks.
"Well, when I got to the Inquisitor's chambers he was yelling at the mutated Arlen" You say. "He said that he had told Arlen that he shouldn't use it on himself, but I guess he didn't listen"

"So that's what happened to him..." Emi says. "But then, why were all the others mutated?"
"Who knows?" You say. "I think we should just focus on getting the prisoners out so we can burn this place down"
"Sounds like somebody's spent too much time around Cheska" Emi says.
"Maybe, but you have to admit that it would be satisfying to erase those... things from existence" You say.

"Before you do that... ummm... would I be able to get a look at one?" She asks.
"Why?" You ask.
"Curiousity... these mutations twist and corrupt the form, but I'm curious as to how randomly placed mouths and eyes can still speak and see"

"Magic?" You ask.

"That makes things much easier" You reply.

"And... there" Emi says. "Your arm should be fine now, but I'd avoid putting too much stress on it for the time being"
"It's not fully healed?" You ask, as you move your arm around.
"Not quite... I'll admit that I lack experience with broken bones, so I couldn't completely mend it" She says. "For the rest, you'll need either time, or an expert"
"Where would I find an expert?" You ask.

"I don't know of any" She says. "Look like you'll just have to be patient"
"Man..." You say. "How am I supposed to fight with only 1 good arm?"
"I never said you couldn't use it, just don't overstress it and you'll be fine" She says.

"Can I still fight with it?" You ask.
"Only if you're not trying to block heavy blows, or deal any yourself" She says. "You'll probably want to use your left hand for that"

I imagine Storm's gonna walk away from this place heavily traumatized; guy seemed like he barely knew how to use a sword when we first met him.

You and Emi head up to the Stronghold.

Coral is still resting on your shoulder, as she went and searched for your mageblade after you fell. Then when she found it, she probably saw that you already had your other one out, so she went to get help.

That's how Flit knew to shoot at the roof... which she did even though you probably could've just finished it off yourself.

But then you would also have had no help getting down from the roof, which would have made things difficult...

Either way, Coral did good. You'll have to see if they have sprite sized ice cream cones, and if they don't, maybe find some place that's willing to make them.

When you get to the doors, you see Zaine standing guard outside. Not to keep people out, but to keep any mutants in.

"Arm's all better?" Zaine asks.
"Mostly" You reply.
"Good to hear" He says. "I'm not used to having a good healer around... Gerard would've just set it, splint it, and told you to suck it up"
"I've spent a fair bit more time studying than I think he has..." Emi says.

"That's true" Zaine says.
"How are things going in there?" You ask.
"Well enough" He says. "Meyu and your squad are still working their way through the upper floors. It's slow going up there, since there are a few rooms that are quite... crowded. Maddie, Derrick and Cheska managed to find Storm, and they're down in the lower dungeons"

"Where's Gerard?" You ask.
"Trying to figure out some way to create a shortcut to get the prisoners out, that won't eat up all his mana" Zaine says.
"How's that going?" You ask.
"Not well" He says. "If you listen carefully, you can hear him cursing every now and then"

"Have any tried to come out?" You ask.
"No" Zaine says. "Why do you think I took this job? These things aren't smart enough to try and escape"
Emi sighs. "I'm not sure whether I should scold your laziness, or praise your intelligence..."

"I could go for some praise" He says. "If I wanted to get scolded, I'd just go home to my wife"
"You're married?" Emi asks.
"I've got a ring, don't I?" Zaine asks.

You look down at his hands. "No..." You reply.

Zaine holds up his hands. "Oh yeah..." He says, reaching into his pocket. He pulls out a ring and puts it on. "I forgot that I usually take it off when I think there's gonna be a fight"

"Why?" You ask.
"I knew a gal who lost her hand in a fight" Zaine says. "Not sure what she missed more: the hand, or the ring"

"How so?" You ask.

"She's sitting over there, just at the edge of the shackle's range" He says. "I can't go to where Madelaine and Michaela and Storm are without setting it off, and she won't listen to me"
"Alright then..." You say, as you pull out the keystone.

"Alive and-"

"FUCKING SHIT" Cheska shouts. You hear her bounding across the large room, until she nearly tackles you off your feet. "Little warning?"

"That was punishment for being rude to Derrick" You say.
"I was being rude because he was acting like he was my boss!" Cheska says.
"He was your boss" You say. "I put him in charge of you"
"You're not my boss either" She says.

"Yes I am" You reply.

Cheska grumbles, as you turn your attention back to Madelaine. "Has he spoken at all?" You ask.

Madelaine tells you the story as Storm told it to her.

He had come back here after your confrontation outside the cave, but after he revealed his intentions they locked him and Michaela up. They only brought him out to show him their new power, in the hopes that he'd see his mistake.

The new power backfired, and whatever it was caused the Grand Inquisitor's flesh to bubble. Storm felt the effects of it, but not to the degree that everyone else did.

When it became clear to him that something horrible was happening, he tried to find a way to close the portal they had opened. He figured out that it was the Grand Inquisitor who was keeping it open, so he grabbed a sword and stabbed him through the back.

He then tried to make it down the stairs to get Michaela and get out, but he was too weak to make it, and he collapsed. The last thing he remembered was seeing a man in black, with gold eyes.

"Well that was definitely Terry" You say. "And what do you think, Cheska? Is it the same ritual as the one the Legion uses?"
"Hard to say unless I can find out more about it" She says. "The creatures here certainly have the same look as the flesh weapons... but the only person who knows more is currently asleep, so... yeah"

"I wanted to get a look at one of the creatures, remember?" She asks. "And the biggest of them is up this way"

You guess that's true. Along the stairway you'll find the hole in the wall where Meyu smashed through so you could get out.

You'll have to see if you can find a way to do that at some point. It seems like a good skill to have...

The three of you head up the stairs... and up... and up... until you reach the hole...

Looks like the others have already cleared this area, so you-

You keep going up the stairs, assuring Emi that you'll look over the corpse on your way back down.

The ritual site is a wreck, mostly due to the damage caued by the mutant flailing about...

You can still make out a clear magic circle on the ground, but-

"There are no other bodies" You say.
"I was just about to mention that" Cheska says. "This wasn't the same ritual... so what were they doing?"
"Could something have happened to them?" Emi asks.
"If something did happen, there'd still be blood" Cheska says. "All I see is rubble..."

You search the room for a bit, but the only strange things seem to be a pair of machines on either end.

"What are they?" Emi asks.
"This one looks like a chaos engine of some sort" You say.

The machines in question are both similar, with the only obvious differences being the energy containers.

"And this looks like storage for a mana crystal..." Emi says. "A chaos engine and a mana generator... what could they have been using them for?"
"Maybe we could turn them on and find out?" Cheska asks. "At least figure out what they used them for. There's probably more to the ritual than just flipping some switches"

"We should let the others know about this first" You say. "I'd rather not turn these on without at least warning everyone first"
"Good call" Emi says. "I'm not sure what these will do, but considering what happened here..."

"Yeah. It could be harmless, or we could end up opening some kind of hell-portal" You say.

You keep looking around the room for a minute, but come up with nothing.

"I guess it was just the machines" You say.
"And the circle" Cheska says. "I never figured out why, but apparently the circle is important"

"I'm guessing the only one who knows that is the one who taught them this ritual..." You say. "And he's long gone by now"
"Guess there isn't much we can learn here, then" Cheska says. "Ah, well. It was worth a shot"
"What are you talking about? We found out what we wanted to" You say. "We came up here to see if it was the same ritual, and it's pretty obviously not"

"Oh yeah..." She says. "Anyway, let's get. I think Emi wants to check out that corpse"
"Please don't make it sound like I'm excited..." Emi says.

Cheska hangs back by the stairs as you and Emi walk across the roof to where the corpse is.

"It really is quite large..." Emi says. "It's almost hard to believe it was ever human"
"Would it help if it didn't have the third arm?" You ask.
"Possibly" Emi says. "I'm actually wondering about the arm. Remember how Storm said he stabbed the Inquisitor?"

"Yeah, bu-... I get it. No sword... unless he took it out" You say.
"It's possible that he didn't, and the body regenerated around it" Emi says. "Possibly causing the growth of this arm"

"That's disgusting" You say.
"It's a disgusting creature" She says. "And it's only going to get worse. I'll uhh... I'll need to borrow your blade"
"You want me to cut it open?" You ask.
"Y-yes... is that a problem?" She asks.
"Nah... at least I don't think it is" You say, as you activate and sharpen your blade. "We'll find out in a second. Where am I cutting?"

"Depends... what do you want to look at first?" She asks.

"Let's start with the arm" You say. "If there really is a sword in there, then it would explain why I couldn't cut through it"

"You tried to cut it off?" She asks.
"Yeah. I figured it'd even the odds a bit, considering he had 3 arms to my 1" You say. "Didn't work, had to go with plan B"
"I see..." She says. "Anyway, let's get started. Make the first cut here..."

Emi guides you through the process of removing the arm. It's fairly simple, though a bit more delicate than what you're used to.

"Well there's the joint... and the sword" Emi says. "The bones are attached like a regular shoulder socket... the socket is just sticking out of his back"
"And the sword was sticking into its chest" You say. "The arm grew around it, but didn't pull it out... I'm beginning to see why it was always screaming"
"But this means I was right" Emi says. "It must have tried regenerating the wound, and failing that it regenerated around the wound, creating this arm"

"Are we gonna take the sword out?" You ask.
"Looks like it's prettey stuck inside the upper arm" Emi says. "It may take some time to remove"

"Hey, a free sword is a free sword" You say. "And it looks like a nice one too... plus if it's Storm's, I'm sure he'd appreciate having it back. Well, if we leave out where we got it from"

"Okay... I guess" Emi says. "Starting cutting it out here, and we can see how long it is..."

It takes a few minutes, but you manage to get the sword out. It is a nice looking blade. You're not sure if it's just ornamental or if it's any good, though. You'll have to show it to someone who knows about these things.

After you wash it off, of course.

Once it's free, you set it aside and turn your attention to the rest of the body.

Emi guides you through the rest of the process, though it's clear that she isn't sure what she's doing. Not that you can blame her, since this thing clearly doesn't conform with what she's seen in her books...

"No heart, destroyed lungs..." She says. "There are even more mouths inside its body, eating what's left of its organs... and all of the mouths have jaws, complete with the muscles that move them. It also seems to have 3 extra brains that I can see, none of which are quite whole..."

"Gross" You say.

"The eyes all have optic nerves leading back to the closest brain... but I can't for the life of me find anything resembling a heart" She says.
"Maybe it doesn't have one" You say.
"Even a demon has a spot for one though" She says "It's all so densely pack in here..."
"Would it need a space?" You ask.
'The blood has to flow or pump somehow..." Emi says.

"Maybe it's in its head?" You say.
"But... the brain would be in the head..." Emi says.
"It has like 6 brains where it shouldn't. Why would we expect there to be one where it should?" You ask.

"That makes some sense..." Emi says. "Alright, we'll need to split the skull..."

Again, Emi tells you how it's done. Given that you don't quite have the proper tools, it takes time. But...

"Maybe I should have put money on that..." You say.
"Please, gambling is the last habit I want you picking up..." Emi says. "How did the heart get into the head?"
"Probably the same way the 6 brains got everywhere else" You say.

Emi looks at you, waiting for you to say what that reason is.

In response, you shrug.

"Why did you think it would be there?" She asks.
"I thought it was odd that it managed to survive getting its insides pulped by Demon Star, but it went down after Flit nailed it in the head" You say. "I guess the brain isn't as important as the heart to a creature like this"

"I wonder..." Emi says. "I think I've learned all I can from this, and it's kind of scary"
"How so?" You ask.
"Whatever did this, regardless of its origin, is a terrifying force" Emi says. "Just the thought of something like this being out there gives me chills..."

"Ditto" You say. "We should go, though. I think the corpse is starting to smell..."
"Agreed" Emi says.

"In its defence, it did have a sword stuck in it" You say, holding up the sword. "This one, to be precise"
"That's disgusting" She says.
"I agree" You say. "It also had a heart where its brain would be"
"Makes sense" She says. "Twisted logic for a twisted creature"

"Once everyone is out, yes" You say.
"We're really going to burn it down?" Emi asks.
"Absolutely" You say. "Crazy, horrible stuff has happened here. It's almost guarantee to be haunted if we leave it alone. So we pre-empt the ghosts and cleanse the whole place with fire"

"My kind of exorcism" Cheska says.

Emi sighs as the three of you head back down to the dungeon.

The big room is almost exactly the way you left it, though the currently unconscious prisoners are laid out a little more neatly.

"What took you guys so long?" Derrick asks.
"Biology" You say. "You guys organized the sleepers?"
"Laid them out more comfortably, yeah" Derricks says. "Madelaine and I did the rounds, made sure they were all actually alive, laid them out and separated them so they'd stay that way..."

"Good" You say. "Any headway on getting them out?"
"I think Gerard and Zaine are going to try something, but our best bet could be to just wait until the mana returns and they can all wake up" He says.

"They'll all be hungry" You say. "Can we feed all these people?"
"No, but the Inquisition can" He says. "We found their storeroom, and it's loaded"
"Awesome" You say.

"So? You learn anything?" He asks.

"The site was weird" You say. "It definitely wasn't the same ritual. No sacrifices, just some weird stuff involving a chaos engine and a mana generator"

"The explains why it seems to have had a different effect" Derrick says. "From what we know about the legion's ritual, it just drains mana... the transformations seem to be something else"

"Yeah" You say. "That was all we found there, but we did take a good look at the body"

"What did you find there?" He asks.
"It had a lot of brains" You say.
"A lot of... brains?" He asks.
"6 of them" You say. "And a heart inside its skull, along with mouths inside its body that were eating its organs, and this sword"

"Is that the sword Storm mentioned?" Madelaine asks.
"Probably" You say. "It's also what Emi thinks caused the third arm to grow out. So I'm not sure if I should be thanking Storm for stopping whatever ritual they were performing, or being mad because that third arm made fighting that stupid thing a massive pain"

"So it was a monster through and through, not just on the outside" Derrick says.
"I think it was a monster long before the ritual" You say. "In fact, I feel like that's a bit unfair to the actual monsters..."

"Best not to speak ill of the dead, Yuu" Derrick says. "He might've been a monster in life, but insulting him now gets us nowhere"
"It makes me feel a little better" You say.

"Alright... I want to see these machines they were using, and then we can take a break to eat dinner" Derrick says. "You coming?"
"Yeah" You reply.
"Uuuuggghhhh..." Cheska says. "What is it with you people and stairs?"

"It's good exercise" You reply.

Cheska grumbles and follows you as you and Derrick head back out.

"It looks like a field generator" Derrick says.
"A whatnow?" You ask.

"Field generator" Derrick says. "It's supposed to create a space that's saturated with mana. Those who can afford such things get them to make learning magic less taxing"
"Neat" You say.

"Except... hmm..." Derrick says.
"Is something wrong?" You ask.
"I think it runs in reverse... taking the mana out of the air instead of putting it in" He says.
"Could that have caused what happened here?" You ask.
"Not even close" He says. "You'd need something the size of this stronghold to make a field that large..."

Derrick goes back and forth, examining both machines for a while, before coming to some conclusion.

"It looks like they were both set to drain the energy from an area around the centre of the room" He says. "This machine drained the mana, and that one drained the chaos"

"So it made a space with no energy at all" You say. "Is that even possible?"
"Not as far as I know" Derrick says. "It'd be like... a vacuum"
"What would that have to do with their ritual?" You ask.

"I dunno, but I am curious..." He says. "I can get this machine running again, but you'd need to give the other a boost. Care to find out?"

"I don't think this is a good idea..." You say.
"Ah, what's the worst that could happen?" Derrick asks.

"Forget I said that" He says. "Come on, I just wanna see what it does. If anything weird happens, I'll shut the machine down. Kay?"
"Okay..." You say. "But just for the record, if anything goes wrong it's your fault"
"Deal" He says.

Derrick puts some mana into the machine on his side, while you put some soul into the one on yours.

"Ready?" He asks.
"No, but okay" You reply.

You both switch the machines on, and... nothing happens.

...

You're about to comment on what a huge disappointment it is, when a gaping black void opens up in the centre of the room.

"Well that was kind of disappointing" Derrick says.
"Huh?" You ask. "You're not seeing this?"
"Seeing what?" He asks.
"The big, black rift that just opened up" You say. "Kinda hard to miss"
"Where is it?" He asks.
"Right there!" You say, pointing to the centre of the room.

...

"Must be something only you can see..." Derrick says.
"No... there's definitely something there" Cheska says. "It's weird. I can't see anything, but it just kinda feels like something is there. Y'know?"

You close your eyes and think back. It was definitely recent...

"So... nothing?" Derrick asks. "Terry used an absence of energy to cut a rift?"

Cheska ponders for a moment, then smiles. "Deal" She says, shaking your hand as she walks over to one of the machines. "Where are we takin' these things?"

"Who'll take it then?" Derrick asks.
"I dunno. Someone she actually cares about enough to not pester them... Fran maybe?" You ask.
"I don't think she'd be comfortable with trusting Cheska to a civilian" Derrick says. "Plus, what happens when she needs to kill someone? Fran doesn't spend a lot of time on the front lines, remember?"

"I'd honestly rather not" Derrick says. "This place feels weird to me, but we can't exactly leave the prisoners..."

"Food?" You ask.
"Food" Derrick replies. "The stores were downstairs. Let's go see what they've got"

You, Derrick and Cheska head back inside and down the stairs to the dungeon level. But instead of taking the door to the actual dungeon, Derrick takes you down a different path.

"Wow" You say. "These guys were stocked up"
"Holy shit" Cheska says. "Were they planning on feeding an army?"
"I don't think so" Derrick says. "This is all quality stuff, not the sort of things you'd buy in bulk for an army"

You look through the stores for a minute. You've never even heard of some of this stuff... but it all smells good.

Well, except for the cheese. But Derrick says that it tastes better than it smells. You hope he's right, because it smells kinda like feet...

"Take what you want, I guess" Derrick says. "Once you've had your fill, then we can get to work"
"Sounds good to me" You say.

Once you've decided that you've eaten enough, you sit back and relax for a moment.

Derrick was right about the cheese, thankfully. You were actually kind of afraid to eat it at first.

"I think I could go a few days without food now, if I had to" Cheska says. "Man, these guys had good taste. It's a shame they all got transformed into flesh monsters"
"Worked out well for us" You say.
"Us guys down here, yeah" Derrick says. "I wonder how things are going up top"

"Nothing's exploded yet" Cheska says.
"Is that a good thing?" You ask.
"Meyu said he'd start blowing things up if the fight went south" Derrick says. "No bangs means they're fine"

"That's good to hear" You say. "So what now?"
"Now we either head to the carts, or see what's going on" Derrick says. "I'm impartial, so it's up to you"

"Let's take a walk" You say, as you start heading out. "I think reporting what's happened here takes priority. In fact we should have done it a while ago"
"We would've done it sooner if we didn't have to leave the carts way back up the road" Derrick says.

"Think they'll work now?" You ask.
"It's worth a try, but I doubt it" He says. "I can still feel how little mana there is. It's definitely improved, but not by much"
"How long do you think it'll take?" You ask.
"I'd give it 'till morning" Derrick says. "Might not be optimal by then, but the cart's'll move"
"And the prisoners?" You ask.
"There's another story" Derrick says. "And something we should tell Altea about. If she can't spare anyone, then we'll probably have to stay here a while until they recover enough to make it back to a town"

"I don't think any of them will be walking to Bell's Run for a while..." You say.
"Not to Bell's Run. There's another town further south, along the river" Derrick says. "Otuna... I think it's called"

"How far?" You ask.
"Maybe 45 minutes by cart" Derrick says. "30 in yours, and a couple hours by foot"
"Not too bad" You say. "Any idea what the situation's like there?"
"Not a damn clue" He says. "But it's pretty close to the stronghold, so chances are they either love or hate us with no in between"

"Let's hope for the former..." You say.
"With our luck it's probably the latter..." Derrick replies.

That's all for tonight!

Next thread will likely be either Thursday or Friday, depending on what my schedule looks like

As always I'll be sticking around for question/suggestion time
