You carefully brush your hair, making sure everything is in place. Not a single hair out of place. No sir. Not this girl. Denise stands at your side, applying your make up for you as well. Winona, Stack, Ingrid, and Josephina watch this carefully. “Jeez, Ellie,” says Winona. “What’s got you in a bunch?”

“I have to meet with the Captain today,” you explain. “It’s a matter of extreme urgency!”

“Can’t even take a vacation day?” asks Stack.

“Nope!” You shake your head. “I mean, unless you guys need me for something.”

Winona pats your shoulder. “We’re pulling for you, Ellie. Pull through! Stick it to that little midget!”

“She is not a midget! She- she’s just height challenged!” you say. “And besides, she’s really nice to me. She’s nice to everyone! Don’t insult her!”

Winona holds up a hand, nodding. “Sorry.”

“Now.” You take a deep breath. “How do I look?” You’re wearing the standard uniform for now. But you’ve made sure everything is spotless. Everything! Not even a seam on your pantyhose is out of place! It took you two hours to get dressed today! By God, this has to be worth it! The four of them give thumbs up to you. “Great! Thanks, guys.”

Ingrid says, “Well, regardless. I’m going to take the girls out to the batting cages today.” You nod. “Good luck, Ellie.”

“I’ll knock one out of the park for you guys. Don’t worry.” You pat your chest, nodding to them. You turn around to leave. “Don’t worry, next time you see me, I’ll be-” You hop over a puddle of water. “Whoa, that was close!” You take a deep breath, sighing. “Ehehe…” Your girls simply stare at you, smirking. “Stop that. I’ll be back. Come on, Denise.” With that, you leave.

Thankfully, no inclement weather interrupted your ride over to the command tower. So for now, you and Denise walk on up the stairs to Captain Spruance’s office. There you find Mulcahy and Hilda already there waiting for you. “What’s up?” you ask.

“Caldwell’s already inside talking to the Captain,” says Mulcahy.

“Yeah,” says Hilda. “Seems to be on the down-low I’d say.” Oh boy. Can’t be good.

Caldwell steps out of the room, sighing deeply. “Well, that was-“ She looks to you. “Oh, Elodie Zumwalt. Of course you arrive after me.” You roll your eyes. “The Captain will see you now.” She looks rather stern however. Strange. You step past Caldwell and into the Captain’s office.

Captain Spruance sits at her desk as you shut the door behind you. “Take a seat, Ellie.” You nod, hurrying to take a seat across from her. Oh boy. You gently press your skirt down and rest your hands in your lap, your legs clenched together. Captain Spruance tents her hands, leaning forward in her massive chair. “Now. Here’s the skinny. I’m not going to beat around the bush, we have an issue right now.”

“What’s that?” you ask.

“My Student Chief of Logistics is no longer with the school,” says the Captain. “She’s transferred out to Chaffee to be closer to her brother. I won’t bore you with specifics. But I need a new Chief.” You tilt your head. Is- is she going to promote you?

“So… who are you going to promote to replace her?” you ask.

“I don’t know yet,” says the Captain. “Do you have anyone in mind?”

“Before I can recommend anyone, what are the specifics?” you ask.

Captain Spruance nods at that, leaning back in her seat. “Whoever I promote will become a Rank One Officer with the full rank of Commander. Allow them to wear this nice white uniform for one thing.” She tugs at her sleeve, grinning. “But another thing though. As Chief of Logistics, it’ll be your duty to oversee Logistics not for a block or for one of the ship ports here on LGA. You’ll be managing Logistics for the entire school. Everything from food, fresh water, power, everything!”

“Really?” you ask.

“Well, technically, the people below you will. It’ll be your job to oversee them. You’ll have at least a thousand students under your charge,” she explains. “You’ll be commanding from here at the Command Tower with me.”

“And?”

“And if I were to promote you, your salary would rise from 800 dollars to 1,500 dollars a week,” she explains. Fif- fif- fif-… what!? That is way above minimum wage! Forget your parents supporting you, you’ll be supporting your parents! That- that’s… “However. I can’t just promote anyone. This is a very tough task that demands attention and focus. What keeps LGA afloat isn’t just its students, it’s the ability for the school to remain self-sufficient. Naval Studies Logistics holds a very important role on LGA.”

“Right.” You nod.

She smiles again, patting the desk. “Good. Now. Do you have anyone to recommend for me?”

Sadly, we can't take it. We have too many obligations as it is. And promoting the sort of person who agrees to things, then dumps them for personal gain is not someone you want in charge.
>>
> “Caldwell.”

“Given my prior commitments to Tankery and to other things right now, I don’t think I can take the job.” It pains you to say it. It really does. But the way Mom and Dad raised you, they always said to make time for friends and family. And hell, they always made time for you too even despite their poor jobs. Caldwell is a better fit. “Caldwell probably could. She’s a good worker. I think she’d be an excellent fit for you.”

Captain Spruance blinks. “Oh.” She looks quite surprised at this actually. “Well, I don’t know what I thought I was gonna get from you I suppose. Always looking out for the others. Hm.” She rubs her chin a bit. “Right. Tell you what, Ellie. You and Caldwell take the rest of the day off, okay?”

“Oh? Are you not going to pick now?”

“I’ll select my Chief of Logistics on Sunday, they’ll start the very next day,” she explains. “You two though I think deserve a well-earned free vacation day. I’ll have your retainers catch up on your work for you.”

“But-“

“No buts, no buts!” She wags her finger with a smirk on her face. “Get out of here. Go.” You stand up, then salute her. “Get.” She turns around in her chair, facing out the window as you leave her office.

There you find Caldwell, Hilda, Denise, and Mulcahy waiting outside the door. “What’d she say?” asks Caldwell. “Did she pick who’d be the new Chief?”

“No,” you say. “Actually. She told me to take the day off. You too, Caldwell.” Caldwell quirks her brow, confused.

Denise smiles. “We’ll catch up on your work for you, don’t worry, Ellie.” Right, right. Um. Wow. This was quite the thing. Oh boy, you’re not sure how to take it. On the one hand, you want to work. But on the other hand, it’s the Captain’s orders to take the day off so…

OOOOHHH! CRAB! LOBSTER! SHRIMP! You munch and chow down on God’s bounty of the sea. Lobster salad, crab cakes, shrimp cocktails! Where has this restaurant been all your life!? It was a seafood place just on the edge of LGA near the farming districts known as the “Seafood Sal’s”. Whoever this Sal person was, they cook like a dream! Caldwell was nice enough to foot the bill for you. Ooooh, this is so good! You haven’t had seafood in so long!

Caldwell quirks her brow. “Like it?”

You cough, stopping your gorging. “I-… it’s okay,” you say simply. You go to a more regular rate of eating your food, even despite the fact that your plate is much bigger than hers.

“So what did the Captain say?” asks Caldwell.

“Well, if you’re wondering, I had to ask what kind of responsibilities being Chief would entail,” you say. “She put it up to me upfront, all the jobs and responsibilities, the rewards too.”

“Anything else?” she asks.

I-… what do I do!?” She plants her hands on her cheeks. “Ooooh! Elodie Zumwalt, you idiot! What have you done!? Now you’ve gone and embarrassed me!” She thumps her head on the table.

“Look, I can’t commit time to it, as much as I want to do it,” you explain. “You seem like the next best candidate.”

“You don’t understand!” she says. “I-…” She sighs, turning away from you. “I-… I recommended you.”

“Why?” you ask. Really? What!? Why!?

“Because-…” She groans, rubbing her forehead. “I-… The Captain seemed to prefer you. She didn’t say anything about you during our talk but the way she treats you I mean, come on! She obviously wants you for the job! Not me.” She leans on the table.

“I’d want you for the job, honest.” Caldwell looks away, puffing her cheeks out in anger. “We’ll have to see what the Captain says anyway. I mean, it’s not like she’ll make the both of us Chief of Logistics. Block Officers, sure. But not Chief of Logistics.”

“I can’t comprehend it though,” says Caldwell. “Why would you refuse a position like that? You could’ve had plenty of money considering you’re on the salary program. Plus, you could’ve had the big office in the Command Tower. AND you get the cool uniform too!”

You shrug. “I want more time to spend with my friends and family. I’m not gonna get that as a Rank One, it’s that simple.” You tilt your head. “Are you not concerned with that?”

She huffs. “You can always make time later for things. It’s about what you do now that gives you time in the future. That’s what my Mom always told me anyway.” She leans on the table, picking at her food. “Eh… thanks for recommending me anyway I suppose but-… she’s going to pick you anyway.”

“We’ll have to see what she says,” you say again. “But yeah, thanks too.” You snicker a bit. “Funny how we both recommended each other though.”

“There was never enough of it back home to be frank. I remember going to parties with my Mom and Dad and my neighbors would always have them cooking. Always something to look forward to-“

“Stop talking with your mouth full.”

“Sorry.” You swallow, shaking your head. “It’s still my favorite kind of food.” You thump your fist against your chest, sighing deeply. “And I’ll gorge myself on it whenever I can.”

“Don’t you get worried about getting fat?” asks Caldwell.

“Eh. Small price to pay if I get to eat seafood for the rest of my life,” you state simply. Caldwell giggles at that, leaning back in her seat. “What? What’s so funny?”

“Nothing.” She shakes her head. “You’re such a pleb, I swear.” You roll your eyes as you munch on more seafood. “Anyway, it’s about 3 O’Clock now. Feel like doing anything other than gorging yourself on seafood?”

You’re content with just eating all this Godly food but on the other hand, Caldwell should have some fun too. “What do you want to do?” you ask.

Caldwell rubs her chin. “Oh, there’s so much I can do today that doesn’t involve you.” You quirk your brow. She snaps her fingers. “I know!” She stands up, placing some dollars down for the waitress. “Let’s go see a movie! I know a good cinema house nearby too! Come on!” Well, at least it’s not dancing. You take a few minutes to finish every last dish on your plate before you leave some dollars down as well. You stand up and move with Caldwell.

-

-

“Let’s see…” Caldwell rubs her chin as the two of you stand outside the movie theatre. Huh, it’s a Drive-in too like in those old movies about the 50s. Interesting ideas start forming in your head now. But for now, it’s the indoor theatre you two are after. “We can see Crimson Skies 2, or we can see-“ She gasps. “They have All’s Fair in Love and War!” What? “All’s Fair in Love and War! It’s a new romantic comedy with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt!” Caldwell sighs blissfully. “They meet on a beach in the middle of a brutal war, then find out that Tom Cruise’s character is blessed with the ability to rewind time back to a certain point! And there’s all kinds of shenanigans involved!”

“Sounds… weird,” you state.

She huffs. “Well, we don’t have to watch it if you don’t want to. But I like my romantic comedies.”

“Two for All’s Fair in Love and War!” asks Caldwell. “Two students!” The bored looking ticket window guy hands you your tickets. “Tell you what, you get to pick the snacks too. On me.” Oh fine. You’re getting popcorn and other stuff though. And some drinks.

-

-

You and Caldwell walk out of the theatre. All you can remember from that movie was how starry-eyed Caldwell and several dozen Naval Studies students like her were whenever Tom Cruise was on screen. They seemed jealous that Emily Blunt was on screen with him at all even. Caldwell sighs in bliss as the two of you walk out of the theatre. “Oh, what a movie! Such romance, such fire! Such passion! So many laughs too!” She looks at you, smiling. “Did you enjoy that?”

“Eh.” You shrug.

“Hm, I guess it’s not for everyone then,” she says. You and her walk the streets. It’s 6’O Clock now. Your belly actually starts singing a little for dinner. “Anyway. Elodie. I am afraid this must be where we part ways. Though I enjoyed our time together I suppose.”

“Yeah.” You and her stop at a street corner. “So did I.”

“No longer do I consider you a rival.” She offers her hand, and you shake it. “I guess I can call you, very reluctantly, a friend.” You roll your eyes. “Anyway. I hope you get the position.”

You say, “And good luck to you too, my friend.” Caldwell smiles, then nods to that. The two of you lock hands and grasp tight, in a show of camaraderie. You may not have liked Caldwell way back in the beginning of this summer, but now you feel you can trust her. “So long then, Caldwell.”

“You too, Elodie.” She lets go, turning around. “I’ll see you around!” She walks on and away. You start to turn to walk forward, but then Caldwell calls out to you. “By the way. Start calling me Lyra! Caldwell is too impersonal.”

“I’ll be sure to remember that,” you say. Caldwell rolls her eyes, then goes back to walking. You will. Lyra’s not so bad of a name.

Considering Denise has probably gone home along with the rest of your retainers, and because you have free time, you decide it’s time to visit Jeep Jockey at the airfield. The Security Guard lets you through without much fuss, and the walk through the runway also goes off without much trouble either. In fact, it seems the boys are astonishingly quiet. And also missing. Where is everybody?

You walk into the hangar where his plane is kept to find Jeep Jockey, along with several dozen of the boys talking quietly amongst themselves. “Um.” They all turn to you, surprised. Okay, that was a mistake. “What’s going on?”

Jack steps up, grinning. “I just figured out a way we can get Jeep Jockey on the team flying with us.” Several of the boys nod, smiling and agreeing. Jeep Jockey however looks very distressed. “See, Jeep Jockey’s got some skill. He keeps crashing, that’s true. But he’s got some natural ability to him for sure.”

“So…” You tilt your head. “What, are we going to impress your coaches in some trial run or something?”

“No.” Tony Speranza shakes his head, his arms folded. He appears to be just as skeptical as Jeep Jockey. “He’s going to take on the Beast.”

“Oh, the Beast!” you say, snapping your finger.

“The Beast.” Jimmy Patterson mutters his name.

“The Beast.” Jack nods, grinning.

“Who’s the Beast?” you ask.

Coach Wright yells outside. “Hey you boys! Dinner’s up!” Everyone starts filing out quickly, pushing past you without answering your question.

Jack however says, “Jock will fill you in!” He steps outside. He peeks back in. “As in information-like, not like-…” He snickers. “You know. Ha ha ha!” You glare at him. “Later!” He steps back out.

That just left you and Jeep Jockey. He looks… shellshocked.

“Are you okay?” you ask.

“You know.” He holds up a hand. “I asked Jack to help me with getting me back on the team. I didn’t think he was trying to get me killed!” He tugs on his hair, eyes wide. “Hell no! I can’t take on the Beast! Not in a vintage Buffalo! I couldn’t take him on in a Tomcat!”

“Can you quickly remind me who the Beast is?” you ask.

“Didn’t we tell you?” he says. You shrug. Maybe once. “The Beast is one of the best Skycraft aces from Germany! He bushwhacks like it’s second nature to him in an Me-109! 109s aren’t even built to do that stuff!” He steps closer to you, making you step back a bit. He’s gone nuts. “They say he’s the living reincarnation of Erich Hartmann! And that he once shot down a teammate just for crowding his airspace!”

Panicking over rumors won't solve anything. Panicking over the skill will, but he just needs to impress. And not crash.

Yeah, that sounds insane enough.

“Well.” You fold your arms. This Beast character sounds like a real hoot. “We better get started on training you then.” Jeep Jockey stops his panicking to look at you as if you’ve just gave birth to twins on the spot. “No time to waste. What are the specifics?” you ask.

“W-…” He clears his throat, taking a deep breath. “So. Jack called up the Beast. Asked for a showdown. He put it through to Coach Wright. If I can shoot down the Beast, then I get to be part of the team.”

“That sounds like an impossible task considering the hype.”

“No shit it is. Nobody’s ever even put so much as a hole in his plane,” he explains. “He’s untouchable. The only reason Coach Wright accepted that challenge is because he knows I’ll lose. And I’ll look like a fucking idiot. And you know the condition if I lose? I have to quit the team entirely!” He starts pacing around, putting his hands behind his head. “Oohhh! This is nuts!”

“Hey.” You place a hand on Jeep Jockey’s shoulder. He stops pacing. “Look. Jack making those conditions and accepting them means he has absolute faith in you.” Jockey blinks, then nods slowly. “Now. You need to get familiar with your craft. What do you have available.”

“That’s the thing.” He sighs, placing his hands on his hips. “Heavenly Body is what we have available.” He points to the F2A Buffalo next to you two. “Coach won’t let me use anything else. Not our Spitfires, not our Hawks, not even the B-17s or the Hudsons. This is what I’m going to ride into battle. And uh… it’s not exactly genesis.”

“No, no it’s not.” You fold your arms. “But… I believe we can make this work. Can you fly?”

“Um. Yeah, Coach Wright says I can fly in the Buffalo now to train but- I haven’t flown a plane in years.” Hm…

And start analysing The Beast. Does he have a favorite trick? How does he start fights? Has he fought a Buffalo? What can't ME-109s do? Can a Buffalo do something that can out do a ME-109?

I have to wonder if Ellie gets that extra seat though if it was live plane practice... that definitely won't become a problem...

At least until you're confident at getting back in the saddle for real.

Don't suppose we could just shove him in a Polikarpov Po-2 and win by technicality?

After dinner, you and Jeep Jockey catch most of the Kill Devil Hills Skycraft team out on the runway. “… and so me and Elodie are planning on training for the showdown with the Beast. Do you have a specific date for when it’ll happen?” asks Jeep Jockey.

“A week from now, Friday,” says Jack. “You got a week to train and relearn everything there is about Skycraft, Jock.”

“I’m gonna need help then,” says Jeep Jockey. “From all of you. I need advice, I need analysis, I need tips and tricks, things I can do that a Messerschmidt won’t.” He takes a deep breath. “If I don’t have any of that, I’m a runway turkey. I know we don’t have the best relationship, guys, but… I can’t do this with just me and Elodie. Can you help me?”

There’s some silence between the boys, before Jack finally says, “Hell. I’d help even if you never asked, JJ.” Jack and Jeep Jockey lock hands, grasping tight. All the other boys slap and pat Jeep Jockey on the arms, shoulders, back, whatever. “You’ve been with this team for a while. We didn’t show you a lot of appreciation but hell, you were always there for us. We’re here for you.”

And that, that actually brings a smile to your face.

“Right!” Jack shouts out to everybody. “Jimmy! Get the tapes on the Beast! Tony, you put together a book on tips and tricks! Pete, Billy, Rafe!” Jack points to Jeep Jockey. “We are going to train up our young man here! Rest of you! Jeep Jockey needs ammo, he needs tools, anything that can help his plane! Let’s slay a Beast!” They all cheer and holler, throwing up their fists and pilot caps. Now is the time for action as the team separates out. Jack comes to you and Jeep Jockey. “Come on. I got an idea.”

Jeep Jockey sits on the shoulders of Jack and Rafe, with some support from Pete and Billy as well. Jeep Jockey however is blindfolded. “Um. What are we doing?” asks Jeep Jockey.

“We’re going to run you around the runway like it’s an air raid,” says Jack. “You gotta be fly to fly by feeling and be able to orient yourself if you blackout or redout suddenly,” he explains. “You gotta a stick in your hands.” Jeep Jockey grips the stick tightly. “That’ll tell us which way to go. Got it?”

“Uh. G-… got it,” says Jack.

“Right, just tell us when to go faster or slower!” says Jack. “Go!” They charge forward, yelling out and mimicking the sound of a prop engine. Jeep Jockey cries out in fright as the boys cart him off.

Part of you is jealous, though…

“Don’t think, feel, Jeep Jockey!” you call out to him.

“Aaah! I’m trying!” he calls back. He wildly handles the stick, guiding his horse of four boys all around the runway. “I can’t see where I’m going!”

“You were fine until you panicked!” yells Rafe. “We’re a death dive now!”

“He can’t pull up, down, or roll you idiot!” yells Pete.

“You know, thinking on it, maybe this wasn’t the best way to get Jeep Jockey used to maneuvering by feeling,” says Billy. All the boys helping Jeep Jockey watch as the five stumble around the runway, dodging planes, crates, jeeps, and everything.

“We’re gonna run into the fence!” yells Rafe.

“Don’t tell him that!” says Jack.

“What!?” Jeep Jockey swivels his head around side to side. “What are we gonna run into!?” They run into the fence, crashing and fall all over each other. The fence doesn’t even budge thankfully thanks to being chainlink. You did not want to deal with Jeep Jockey joyriding around in traffic. They all groan and crawl around in pain. Jeep Jockey raises his arm. “… uh. Is the training over?”

You sigh, rubbing your forehead.

“The Beast flies primarily a G-10.” You and Jeep Jockey look over the notes. You dismissed the boys for now as it was getting late. Right now, it was just the two of you. He looks through notes with you as you state off facts. “However, he also has a K-4 in reserve from what I can tell. He uses the K-4 like sort of a steamroller. He uses its climb rate and its horizontal speed to dive in on targets and pull away once he has the energy. But the G-10, he uses like a real dogfighter. I predict that he’ll be in the G-10, that’s his go-to from all the tapes I’ve seen so far.”

Jeep Jockey nods, rubbing his eyes and yawning a little. “Right, right.”

“Tired?” you ask. Jeep Jockey did have a few more go’s at that riding thing. None of them were very successful.

“Eh.” He leans back in his chair. “So, do I have anything over the G-10?”

“Turning I guess.” He nods, looking down at the notes. “But a 109 G-10 appears to be faster than the Buffalo. Now, you-“ You look up at him, and find him dozing off. You look at your watch. 10 O’Clock sharp. Damn.

Maybe you should retire for the night.

You sigh. Typical. Lazy. Feckless. You stand up, then pull your jacket off. He’s going to catch a cold if he just sleeps out in the open like this. You better run on back to the hangar. It’s far too late at night. But before you do, you suppose you’ll do Jeep Jockey a solid. Very carefully, you rest your jacket over his chest as he sleeps.

You step back and wait a moment. Nope. No signs of waking up. Right. He better enjoy that jacket. It’s quite warm. With that though, you start walking on back. No point in saying good night to him, he’s fast asleep anyway.

He better give it back.

It’s pretty late by the time you get back to the Tank Hangar. You find Winona, Ingrid, Stack, and Josephina changing into their pajamas in the lockerroom as you step in. “… and then it stank for like the rest of the day!” says Stack. She looks over at you. “Oh, hey, Ellie!”

“Ellie!” Winona grins, then notices a very notable thing missing from your wardrobe. “Hey, where’s your jacket?”

“I lost it,” you say. They look at you, confused. “Really, I did. Just, blew off in the wind. Never to be seen again. Bye jacket. Sorry.” They keep staring at you. Ugh, they know you’re lying. You start unbuttoning your blouse as you reach into your locket for sleep clothes.

“Wait…” Stack rubs her chin. “Didn’t Jeep Jockey ask if you were available today?” It takes a few seconds for them to process, before they slowly slide in around you, grinning.

Why do you bother.
