From a broadcast on your phone, President Minezaki says, “…and Katsuya Nekoyo! And that’s the last participant! Details will be sent to you all later today. Let’s show them what Tetsuyashi’s made out of!”

Looks like you used up all your luck for the year. You are now a participant for the Cultural Festival, the lottery ticket you opted in randomly chosen out of sheer chance. Maybe.

“Hey, nice one!” Sorai says as he pats your back, “Who did you pay off?”

“Who did I pay off?” you say, “Is this real?”

“Dreaming? Hold up, I’ll pinch you.”

You karate-chop his hand away, “Go pinch yourself, I don’t want to wake up.”

And he does. “Ow. Good news is that I’m not asleep. Weird, I shouldn’t be up this time of day in the weekend,” Sorai says.

“Got any plans today?”

“Got kinda an annoying problem, nothing big. Why?”

“Curious.”

“Mmm,” Sorai rubs his neck, “What about you?”

That’s… a good question.

“Studying, I guess.”

“Studying?” Sorai recoils, “Who are you?!”

“I’m taking school seriously, for sure this time!”

“Everyone says that, and everyone gives up after like a month,” he shakes his head, “Well, I’m off. Later.”

Kaori’s house is a train ride away. You wonder why she doesn’t live in the dormitories, even though it’s already paid for. For you, your place is close enough—and spacious enough—that it doesn’t matter.

It’s awfully hot, a discomfort that leaves you wondering if Winter didn’t just did a flying leap over Spring and passed the baton to Summer.

You walk along the rows of houses until you find Kaori’s. Curtains are drawn.

You ring the buzzer, and there’s no reply.

It’s quiet.

There should be a hidden key somewhere…

Um…

Uh…

If someone saw you right now, they might just call the police. Luckily, it doesn’t take you too long as you fish out a key from the nameplate.

“Etou Residence”

You feel a bit nostalgic. Wait, you’re here now, and you just saw her on Wednesday. What the hell are you feeling nostalgic about?

Entering her house without permission?

Oh yeah. There’s that.

Quietly, you let yourself in while locking the gate behind you, then the front door. Hold on, why are you sneaking?

“Hey, anyone here?” you call out.

Nothing.

Taking off your shoes, you step forward in your socks when you notice Kaori’s shoe is still here Shoe, as in singular!

W-what?! Is this a sign of something?! No wait, this is just the old Kaori, the one who isn’t brainwashed by rich girls.

Calm down, Katsuya, you’re just overreac—

“HIYAA!!” a muffled cry from upstairs, then a thud.

Multiple thuds!

Calm down first! Okay, take a deep breath.

"Are you alright? I'm coming in!"

“NOOO!!”

Wait, what the hell are you doing?! She’s not going to sue you, just go! GO! You sprint down the hallway, up the stairs, and then some, skidding to a stop on the polished wood floor as you stop in front of Kaori’s room.

It’s closed shut, but you can hear something moving from there!

“What’s going on in here?!” you shout as you burst through.

Inside, a small animal is tugging on Kaori’s pajamas as the girl huddles up into a defensive ball.

…What?

You freeze, not quite sure what to do.

“Kaori!” you say.

Ah, you kinda want to watch and take a pict—

No, no! What are these thoughts!?

You step forward, “Come on! Over here!”

You wave your hands at it, attempting to look as menacing as possible. It looks up at you, Kaori’s pajamas still in its mouth. It nibbles a bit and scratches its nose, then goes back to trying to tug it off Kaori. It’s not interested in you at all, damn it!

Hold on… wait a minute…

“Kaori! It’s after your pajamas! Take them off!”

“Noooo houuo!” she cries, holding her shirt even closer to herself, “Have you no shame!?”

“What are you talking about!? Don’t act like I haven’t seen anything like that before!”

“You have, utterly, no tact at all, you lecherous beast!”

“Oh, shut up!”

Grabbing a book on the floor, you throw it at the tanuki. Its mouth lets go as the book barely misses the tanuki.

Uh.

You grab a notebook, and before you can throw that, the animal already is leaping toward you. Falling back, you flinch as it leaps past and out.

You walk up to Kaori and lightly help her get up. She brushes her hair to the side, giving you a frustrated expression.

“Are you okay?” you ask.

“I’m… You should go after the tanuki.”

“I’ll take that as a no.”

Kaori lifts the spot where the critter was biting, now damp and gross.

“A quick shower is needed, that’s all.”

“He didn’t bite you or anything, did he?”

“I believe not… I’m somewhat unscathed.”

“Good,” you say, “Alright, time so where it went.” Right as you’re about to leave, you stop, “Kaori, why didn’t you use your art?”

You can’t use it in public spaces, but your house is your business.

“O-oh! That’s right! Be careful, it’s a psion!”

“…Ehn?”

“It can use magic too, so stay sharp, Onii-chan.”

“Okay…” you mutter as you walk off.

Maybe you should call the police instead.

No… no, you can deal with this! It’s just a walking pile of danger that doesn’t know real restraint, that’s all!

You carefully walk downstairs, on edge. You hear a sound in the kitchen.

Slowly, you turn the corner to see… nothing out of the ordinary. However, inside the fridge, you can hear something shifting and moving around, making a disgusting mess inside.

It’s closed, and you doubt that the tanuki closed it by itself…

Did it…?

You quietly step closer, ready to open the door with one hand and grab it with the other.

Almost… there… NOW!

You pull forth and in the second it takes for you to register the furry offender, you lunge forth!

And you go right through it.

“Aah!!” you recoil, half thinking you punched it so hard, you killed it with a single blow.

But when you pull back, you realized you just came in full contact with a psi shaped tanuki.

Oh come on, how are you supposed to deal with this?

It materializes again, and then it leaps onto you, and then seemingly disappears.

“No no NO NO NO!” you cry out, horrified, tugging at your shirt before it pops back up underneath, scampering on and around you.

”Get off me!”

Against all of your instincts that are screaming at you, you try to befriend the trash panda that’s currently on you. It sticks its head out of your shirt collar and stares at you. You stare at it back.

You don’t move for a minute.

“H-hey there little guy,” you say, slowly reaching up to pet it.

O-oh right, it’s a psion. You didn’t think to record it. But recording an animal’s signature…?

Oh why not.

“Tanuki” Psi Signature Recorded.

Kaori pops around the corner, asking, “Are you okay?”

“I… think so—“ your sentence is interrupted by the tanuki jumping forth and colliding with your nose, which is then followed up by it crawling onto your face, then your head, and then jumping off. “Gah, damn it!” you say, turning around to chase after it.

The critter, instead of staying, hops into the air, fizzles into psi, and phases through the glass pane leading to the backyard before promptly escaping.

“Does… does this happen often?”

“Thankfully, no.”

“Perhaps,” she giggles, “Who can say?”

“You’re probably just seeing things—“

“Hey Onii~, if you ever find a girlfriend, you’ll tell me about it, right?”

“After all, what if she’s not good enough? I’ll be sure to have a lengthy chat with them… I do wonder, how much rope do I have left in the house? Denkiko Mita, right?”

“Kaori, no!”

And that was the end of a very productive studying session.

Rank 1 - 000/300 - Illusion (Anporin)
Rank 1 - 150/300 - Illusion (Anporin)

You didn’t train that much before the fight, but it can’t be helped.

However, you did look into just what exactly Illusion does, the psionic art you took from one of the idols a while back.

You played with it, slowly figuring out what exactly was Anporin doing. And damn, is it difficult. The sheer precision required to do anything even remotely tangible is painful, and the concentration needed to maintain it is almost impossible to hold under pressure.

But, you can still do something.

When light travels through a medium—like air or water—it’s always slower than if it isn’t in a vacuum. Like the image of a straw bending as it goes into a cup of water.

After all, the medium is “something” and that material would get in the way. How much light slows down is called the index of refraction, and it’s this property that decides how much light bends.

Illusion can change it, slowing down the propagation of light and redirecting it.

Just thinking about creating a mirror image of yourself hurts your head.

So instead, you shake it off, and walk into the stadium light.

On the other side, across a wide, stretching plane of steel plates, is a girl in a Nishishio High school uniform.

She shoots you a peace sign. Or is that saying you’re number 2 to her?

Even so, if you touch her in the match, you would probably have enough time to immediately psi blast her.

You roll your sleeves up as you walk forward inside the Tetsuyashi stadium.

You wave at her.

She replies with a smile.

The layered glass dome that separates you and Mita from the audience flows with psi, slowly cutting you off from the announcer.

Kaori’s probably watching you, right now. You stretch and push in your shoulder blades, cracking your back. A stretch of numbness goes from the jut of your right shoulder to your left hip. That’s never going to go away, is it?

The world around you fizzles away, surrounding you both in a shower of light, psi slowly replacing metal with dirt, trees, and grass.

It’s been far too long since you’ve been in a real fight, fun sparring or not.

There's a lack of a collective, especially since people travel from the 4 major regions (North, South, East, West) with great frequency.

It's also a city. Every square inch is a person probably more talented than you, or better looking, or smarter. There's bound to be some desire for individualism.

And also, not everyone's a psion. If you give a child a superpower, they'll think they're special, especially if there's people around them that don't have a one. The idea of being a chosen one just like in their favorite stories is thrilling, and the fact that their power isn't (visibly) the same as any other's adds onto it.

Now imagine that's you, and then imagine some kid walking up asking if he can have your power—the thing that could make you a hero, the thing that lets you feel you're better than others, the thing that makes you, you.

I'd think they'd say no.

Or maybe I should shut up, get a psych major, and then come back to rewrite the quest. I can't tell.

I do think that's a pretty good explanation. If I had a superpower, I wouldn't be eager to let anyone else have it too unless it was a life-or-death situation, and even then I imagine it would take a lot of closeness and trust.

An unrelated question: how long are you going to string us up with Kaori's backstory? You've referred to it again without any explanation! The curiosity is killing me!

A bit more, probably? Didn't want to add on even more ongoing plot strings.
