You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and after a very long day you've finished with the Lieutenants under your tutelage. They've since been fed in your Division's mess hall and put up for the night in temporary quarters: your sister-in-law Miyako with your daughter, and Abarai, Kira, and Hinamori together in a small triple room with the hope that they'll be chatty with each other before they pass out from exhaustion.

Then of course you had to tuck Halibel and Apacci in, since they're still in their resurrección forms and wouldn't be able to fall asleep otherwise due to their heightened senses and unusually active reiatsu. To your credit you even tried to do the thing properly and read Apacci a bedtime story, which for some reason she protested at despite Tia's silent amusement.

Now night has fully fallen, leaving you to retreat into your own quarters. The windows are cracked open to invite the cool night air in and let the warm, stale air from inside out: this may be one of the last nights you'll be able to do that until spring comes... assuming you're still around to see it. The notes you wrote about Hadō #99 are spread out on the tatami in front of you, several pages of handwritten gibberish that feels at the same time both alien and tantalizingly familiar.

Yoruichi reclines on the couch nearby reading a book of her own, no title visible on its well-worn cover. It looks like it could be a thousand years old, and knowing her Clan it may well be.

With a frustrated sigh you collapse onto your back with a dull thump. “This is going nowhere.”

“That bad?” your wife muses, closing her reading and setting it on the cushion next to her. “Maybe you should take a break... I'll admit, fascinating as this may be I'm not getting much usable information from it either. I could do with a break myself.”

“So what'd you do with Omaeda after training?” you ask, forcing yourself upright and crossing your legs.

Yoruichi scoffs. “When he was done stuffing his face he passed out in your mess hall, so I figured I'd just leave him there 'till breakfast.”

“His fundamentals seem solid,” you reckon, recalling his performance earlier in the day. “Though that just means he's not living up to that potential.”

“He uses too much energy with everything he does,” Yoruichi muses. “The strain is spread out through a lot of body mass, so he doesn't actually feel that he's overexerting until he's already used too much reiatsu and exhausted himself.”

“Sounds a bit like someone we both know,” you nod, reminding her that Ichigo has a similar problem, “except mister Substitute just doesn't seem to ever really run out of energy.”

“Ah, to be young again...” Yoruichi sighs.

“We're not that old yet,” you snort. “As strong as we've gotten it'll be at least five hundred years before we really have to start rationing our reiatsu.”

“Speaking of things that won't happen for five hundred years,” Yoruichi grins, “what's going on with those notes of yours? Can I help?”

“A second set of eyes couldn't hurt,” you shrug, “so long as you can make sense of my handwriting.”

“Let me see,” she sighs, easing herself onto the floor by your side and looking over the sea of papers. “Yeah, I see the problem... on the face of it at least, none of this really makes sense. I can understand the words but with no idea what they refer to I can't even guess their meaning, like the whole thing is written in allegory.”

“Least it's not in puns,” you shrug. “I don't think I could live with that.”

Maybe if you concentrate on the first entry it'll start to make more sense? That's a sensible line of reasoning, since when is the first puzzle in a dungeon ever anything but the easiest? It's always designed to kind of ease you into the mechanics, give you some sense for what to expect...

“First there was nothing, but in time there was everything?” you read aloud, almost trembling in rage. “The fuck does that even mean!? It could mean so many things that it's meaningless!”

Yoruichi stares over your shoulder. “How many of these entries are we gonna have to figure out, anyway?”

You flip through the pages, counting each more or less self-contained outburst of stanzas, koans, and doodles. Then you pause, before doing it again.

“Ninety-eight!” you grin, turning to face your wife. A satisfied grin tugs at her lips too, like the irrepressible pride of a cat bringing home a mouse to leave in your slippers.

“Ninety-eight, you say?” she muses. “That's it! This is a curriculum! The whole system is, but none of us have thought about it that way for centuries!”

“Each numbered spell builds on the experiences gained in learning the previous ones,” you muse, realizing the inherent sensibility in what your wife has realized and grinning madly at the elegant simplicity of it all. “The mid-level spells aren't ordered because they're more difficult than the one immediately before it, or more inherently powerful, but because that's the order they have to be learned in to ensure that you've laid the groundwork for spells ten or more numbers later!”

“Nobody learns them in that order anymore,” Yoruichi adds, “because some of them are more or less useful in combat, and since the end of the first war with the Quincy focus shifted towards military expediency rather than building technical knowledge.”

“When did Aizen realize that I wonder?” you muse quietly, “and when did he decide not to share that realization?”

Yoruichi shakes her head solemnly, dismissing your question entirely. “All I know is now we've figured out what each of these entries refers to: they're the take-away lessons from each numbered spell, one through ninety-eight.”

“I'll be along in a few minutes,” you tell your wife. “Id like to meditate on what we've learned, even if it's just briefly.”

“Try not to let out too much reiatsu,” Yoruichi smiles, her hand caressing the top of your head as she walks past. “You know how jumpy people tend to get.”

“No promises,” you shrug, setting Tenkotsuki and Kobara no Tachi at your side and settling into seiza. “Early morning tomorrow, if I'm not done down here would you wake the Lieutenants just before sunrise?”

“Sure, just promise me you'll try and get some sleep if you can?”

You tell her that you'll take it into consideration, and after she heads off you begin to carefully control your breathing, centering your mind, focusing intently inwards with each deep breath.

Finding yourself seated across from Tenkotsuki underneath her vibrant tree, the fox-woman smiles at you.

“So I see you have learned the truth behind the numbered kidō system?” she muses happily. “I must admit I too have tended to abandon that method of instruction in favor of expediency, but I had faith in you as a student and myself as a teacher that you would some day understand such things for yourself.”

“Sorry that 'my own time' took two centuries,” you bow gently to your zanpakuto. “That must've been frustrating.”

“Quite to the contrary, the moment where you and Lady Yoruichi came to truly comprehend the truth of matters was very fulfilling,” she smiles reassuringly. “When the student truly attains mastery, the master can only ever be thrilled for them.”

“I'm flattered you consider what I have mastery,” you smirk. “Any praise is lavish coming from you.”

“Your usage of Daichi Tenyō should be proof enough,” Tenkotsuki explains, briefly using her own reiatsu to mimick your own use of the spell. “Your mastery of hadō extends at least to the fifties, else you would not have been able to comprehend how to modify Daichi Tenyō.”

“So by that token, modifying Kurohitsugi suggests I understand everything up through #90 well enough?” you ask. “Or is that a fair extrapolation?”

“It is not unfair to suggest,” Tenkotsuki admits. “Which means you have only eight spells to truly comprehend before the final spell can be yours. The rest is up to your instinct, your often frustrating ability to know the use of things without understanding their roots.”

>What do you mean by that, Tenkotsuki?

Yes, in the options box type "dice+(x)d(y)" where x is the number of dice you throw and y is the number of sides of the dice

So "dice+3d10" would have you throw three ten sided dice, like so.
"dice+1d100" would throw a single 100 sided dice and so on.

“I don't actually know all of those spells though,” you admit. “I know Senjū Kōten Taihō well enough, and I know that #96 requires you to burn your own arm off... are the others just as nasty? Or is there some other reason they're not taught?”

“Here is an interesting question for you,” Tenkotsuki smiles deviously. “Does Ittō Kasō truly require the sacrifice of a limb?”

“I don't know,” you admit. “I've never bothered to learn how to use it because I presumed that it would... you know. Maim me.”

“Well, that could be an interesting lesson for you,” Tenkotsuki suggests. “Or else we could work on Senjū Kōten Taihō, or I could begin to teach you a new spell.”

“Well, starting with something familiar couldn't possibly hurt,” you sigh, rising to your feet and gazing out over the silent, stormy seas. “You probably want me to give a demonstration?”

Tenkotsuki remains where she is. “If you believe that will help.”

With arched eyebrows and a shrug, you extend your right arm and begin to chant. “Limit of the thousand hands, respectful, unable to touch the darkness, shooting hands unable to reflect the sky. The road basks in the light, the wind ignites the embers, time that gathers when both are together, needless hesitation, obey my command.”

Angry spears of light form around you which glow the same color as the illuminated cherry blossoms of the tree over your shoulder, each aimed out over the distant waters as you continue to chant. “Light bullets, eight bodies, nine items, book of heaven, diseased treasure, great wheel, grey tower. Aim in the distance and scatter bright and clean when fired!”

“Hadō 91, Senjū Kōten Taihō!”

A tremendous explosion blossoms in the distance, oddly silent like the rest of your inner world despite its obvious violence which sends powerful ripples across the water below the soaring seacliffs. You can hear a faint crashing sound as the waves batter the coast, also seemingly dampened.

“And what do you suppose this spell can teach you about its succeeding spells?” Tenkotsuki asks, rising to stand at your side as the reiatsu from your blast dissipates. “Can you tell me, from the perspective of one attempting to instruct a budding kidō practitioner, why this spell is numbered ninety-one?”

“It uses ten blasts,” you muse, “each carrying tremendous power on their own, but due to their different spin characteristics the blast is amplified. I suppose that means it teaches a student how to compress and control the basic characteristics of multiple powerful blasts at the same time?”

“Which is important in learning Goryūtenmetsu,” Tenkotsuki nods sagely. “Very good, Lady Riku. You seem to understand its place in the curriculum quite well.”

“But that's not right,” you frown, recalling something from your own notes. “The waka poem that maches Senjū Kōten Taihō's place in the list talks about how nature's complexity and wildness make it unconquerable. That doesn't fit with a spell intended to teach improved control over multiple blasts.”

Tenkotsuki nods, seemingly intrigued rather than disturbed by your suggestion. “And what does that suggest to you about the lesson your own hand would teach you?”

“It seems inconsistent with the fact that Goryūtenmetsu demands so much shaping, as it were,” you muse. “If it's so hard to control that the ninety-first spell is required to teach you how to do it properly, why waste so much time and effort making it look a fancy dragon... let alone five dragons?”

“What do you believe?” Tenkotsuki asks, smiling at you. “You are a master as well in your own right. What would your training and experience suggest must be done with this realization?”

Unless the spell is shaped like a dragon naturally, for whatever reason. Can't see how that'd work though.

I'm gonna give you a few more minutes here to maybe discuss this, because some of you are dancing around a rather important realization about why literally every other spell has to come before this one.

Well, lets think about this, all the previous spells we knew were just basic energy blasts or something that uses energy in the shape of basic geometical shapes, like a sphere for kuyo shibari or a box like Kurohitsugi. But then comes hado 99 and all of a sudden you need to make a spell look like a dragon. That's a big step up from making a box shaped spell. So why the sudden need to make a complex shape like a dragon? and why a dragon?

#91 seems to start in relatively formless multiples before converging for the big, amplified explosion. #99 looks like it's more just going outward from... somewhere. A bit like Itto Kaso, I suppose? Which has a form of a blade tip too for some reason.
>>
>>1302021
Well, if there were four I would guess that they are modeled after the four dragon kings or the four symbols.
>>
>>1301990
What king said here smells to me like the dragon shape is important.
Maybe splitting them into five blasts is important too.
>>
>>1302028
Well it would be very difficult in making a spell shaped like the tip of a katana blade, it's #96. All the other spells before it were either formless looking like points of light or just spheres. Maybe the fact that casters can shape the spell into something complex as a dragon or the tip of a katana would show their ability to manipulate the spell.
>>
>>1302021

Maybe it's easier to visualize the swirling motion via a dragon, as opposed to water or a tornado?

>>1302033
>>1302034
4 cardinal points + 1 central anchor point makes sense.
>>
>>1302011
Well, my thinking is that a majority of the numbered Hado are just Colour + Shape, with a few exceptions. I think almost all of them at least contain the Shape component.

Is it that the Dragons are complex shapes, and much like an artist uses stacked simple shapes to create anatomy, #99 uses a bunch of simple shapes to create a more complex one?

“Wait a minute,” you frown. “If every hadō spell is meant to work up to this one single technique, that means each individual spell's unique component has to go into the final spell?”

Tenkotsuki is practically glowing with pride. “Correct, my dear. To be specific it requires the caster to introduce characteristics of lightning, fire, ice, and stone within the reiatsu released by the spell while also controlling its shape and gravitic properties.”

“That's why it needs to be shaped like something,” you realize, somewhat terrified at the implications. “No mortal could distribute those characteristics perfectly within the blast, so instead someone came up with a way to shape it. Keep the chaotic mess of combined elements and shearing gravitic waves contained inside a bounded field where how well they've been blended is irrelevant.”

“Exactly so,” Tenkotsuki nods happily as even Rosa seems to appear out of nowhere to listen in. “Keeping these characteristics balanced and controlled within anything approaching a respectable blast radius would be quite impossible for anyone without fully divine reiryoku. It is simply inconsistent with the laws of the universe.”

“Fully divine?” Rosa grumbles. “So you mean even at our best...”

“We would be unable to manage the idealized version of the spell, yes,” Tenkotsuki replies calmly. “Which is why the numbered version of the spell was created in the first place, to realize the culmination and simultaneous execution of all kidō theory and practice. One ultimate spell to stand above the rest: Goryūtenmetsu.”

“And so that's what learning the rest of the spells will teach me how to do?” you ask.

Tenkotsuki nods resolutely. “Indeed. Since you know that each will have an associated lesson to be learned I have no doubts in your ability to use the final technique.”

“You used some really specific language just then,” you observe slyly. “Things like that are never coincidences with you, Tenkotsuki.”

Your zanpakuto chuckles to herself in quiet amusement. “You wound me, Lady Riku. I only seek to speak with precision, to avoid saying what I do not mean.”

“You just like being clever, vixen,” Rosa grumbles. “So what'd you mean not to say?”

“I believe that the mortal sorcerer who devised all of these spells was nothing short of a once-in-a-millenium genius,” Tenkotsuki explains, praising the long-dead inventor of the numbered kidō system and presumably its final entry. “Whoever it was had a peerless understanding of theory which you have never required or suffered for a lack of, but the absence of which would make it difficult to devise such spells on your own. However, I believe that by the time he or she reached this final spell, that specialized knowledge had begun to work against their true interests.”

“See, unlike you Lady Riku I believe that great mind lacked a certain balance of skills, such as hakuda and zanjutsu,” she concludes. “Otherwise many of the upper-nineties level spells would feature more elegant solutions drawing on those skillsets, as you and your wife's shunkō does.”

“And you think zanjutsu technique could make it possible to cast an improved version of Goryūtenmetsu?” you muse, interested by the idea. “You might be right.”

“I was inspired by your nephew's technique,” she admits, “and I have given this hypothetical technique a similarly pretentious name: Gozan Tensatsu.”

“Nice wordplay,” you chuckle to yourself, “I'm sure Isshin would get a kick out of it. So this technique you have in mind focuses the entire spell in a narrow arc like Getsuga Tenshō, then? I can see it working.”

“Assuming you can learn this superspell of hers,” Rosa shrugs.

“I'm sure I'll find a way to manage,” you shrug, before giving Tenkotsuki a quick but warm embrace. Then you turn to face Rosa.

“I know I haven't been great about including you as an equal partner... I kind of still use you as a convenience, to a degree. So when I'm done with this, maybe we can work on something together?”

“I'd be glad to learn from you as well.”

Rosa closes her eyes and sighs, as if thinking. “You avoid using me frivolously, so you already understand me better than you give yourself credit for. It's best that you leave me sealed when you can, and I'll admit I like the quiet.”

“But if you want to learn from me... I may have a few things to teach.”

“Then I'll be back,” you nod.

“We'll be here,” Rosa shrugs.

When you awaken it's only a short walk before you can collapse into bed, and Yoruichi's deep, slow breathing gradually lulls you to sleep.

Morning comes early, with a shrill whistle in the pre-dawn dim that startles Lieutenants from their beds. Momo rolls out of bed and onto the floor, still in her pajamas, while Kira leaps to attention dragging his comforter with him. Renji's response however is nothing short of spectacular, as he practically vaults from his bed in alarm and slams into the wall above the headboard, then comes crashing down onto his face before rolling out and onto the floor in a pile of linens, pillows, and drywall. Finally he comes up with a look of pure confusion, his hair a mess and dusted with bits of plaster.

“Whuzzgoinon?” he slurs, looking back and forth.

“Rise and shine,” you grin wickedly. “I want you three ready by sunrise, so get to it!”

By the time the sun has peeked over the top of the outer wall your students are assembled on the training field, and the first few members of your own Division are just getting to work throughout the complex.

“It'll be hakuda this morning,” you announce loudly, “and lucky for you, two of the finest experts in the art of unarmed combat are right here to instruct you.”

“Heh,” Omaeda chuckles. “It's almost like a day off.”

“We'lll see, Omaeda,” you muse. “We'll see... so can anyone tell me the difference between basic hakuda and advanced techniques?”

After a moment, Miyako raises her hand tentatively and you gesture for her to speak. “I remember Kaien had some skill with it... the technique requires you to control your reiatsu to a greater degree, to empower strikes and harden one's body.”

You try and hide your discomfort at Miyako mentioning her missing husband. “That's correct. True hakuda relies on inner power in the form of reiryoku as much as it relies on external force and technique.”

Then you casually punch a hole through a nearby wall.

“So how does one use inner power for fistfighting?” Hinamori asks nervously.

“It's a little like kidō,” you explain for her benefit. “Now, I want to see each of you strike one of these targets with a single punch, using your dominant hand.”

Each Lieutenant in turn follows your order, with various results. Omaeda fully shatters his target dummy with a cheeky smirk on his face, and even if Renji's use of hakuda is mediocre his pure physical strength makes for an impressive display. Kira's punch is respectable, but not really anything to write home about, and Hinamori bruises her hand badly in exchange for cracking her target in half. Miyako's target is seemingly undamaged at first glance, but when you look at it closer the wood seems to have been scorched and her hand is fine.

The system of numbered kido predates the Gotei 13, and many who knew the reasoning behind it have been killed or died of simple old age. The organization also hasn't fully recovered from the quincy war either, even WITH the new focus on expediency.

By Yamamoto's reckoning most shinigami would never get to the level of skill where the shift in instruction style would matter anyway.

“Miyako, I want you to try that again... but against me,” you explain, eyeing the result of her punch carefully. “Hinamori, if you wouldn't mind I'd like you to watch this carefully.”

You begin with a simple succession of jabs to probe her guarded stance for weaknesses, which you find thanks to your speed and power but choose not to exploit... that's no longer the point of the exercise. Instead you focus on how your sister-in-law controls her reiatsu as she moves, then throws a punch of her own that meets your open palm.

“Ow!” you hiss, like your hand accidentally brushed a hot pan. It's certainly not a bad burn thanks to your own power, but in the moment Miyako concentrated reiatsu in her fist to strike its temperature definitely spiked.

“Hinamori, did she use kidō just now?”

The Lieutenant shakes her head. “No, I don't think so Captain.”

“I agree,” you nod, the side of your fist meeting Miyako's left wrist. No heat there... it's only her fists, and only when the reiatsu is concentrated there.

After a few more exchanges you have a working theory. “So I think I know how to explain this... each user of shunkō has discovered that they have a certain affinity for one element over all others. Suí Fēng has wind, Yoruichi has lightning, I have ice... and you have as strong an affinity for fire as I've ever seen.”

“Really?” she asks, lowering her fists and staring in surprise. “How'd you know that? It's not like I can use shunkō.”

“It's strange that your affinity is obvious even despite that,” you shrug, “but many Captain-class fighters' reiatsu takes on elemental qualities which match their zanpakuto. This is just a strange case I guess, but not one without any precedent.”

“I'd like you to spend the day training with Yoruichi,” you conclude. “I may be good with hakuda, but Yoruichi's talents are beyond any meaningful comparison. If anyone will know how to make use of your unexpected talent it'd be her.”

what's the translation behing Gozan Tensatsu?
from what I can glean from my broken knowledge of Japanese,

Go = "five"
zan = "cutting"(?) something synonymous to the slashing of a sword.
Ten = "Heaven"
Satsu = "Killer"

So, "Five cuts killing Heaven"? or "Heaven Killed in five cuts"? Sounds straight out of a Wuxia novel. I like the sound of that.
>>
>>1302588
Thanks for writing
>>
>>1302640
"Zan" words always remind me of SMT.
>>
So, this thread reminded me of something way back in thread three:

>Your Zanpakuto glares at you sternly, her polite image now shattered completely. “There are two things which I despise in this world: only two. The first is the existence of anyone who would dare to assert that their sorcery is greater than my own.”
>>
>>1302672
and your point?
>>
>>1302686
>>1302672
Whoever created kido was potentially better at sorcery than Suki, and yet she isn't acting angry about it. Although she did talk before about how knowledge of other arts like hakuda and zanjutsu are needed for true mastery of kido, so Tenko might be better at them?
>>
>>1302686
>and your point?
That Tenkotsuki must be feeling really good about this thread.
>>
Reminder that Aizen knows #100
>>
>>1302723
nah, Tenko said the inventor of Kido was a genius in theorycrafting and spellcrafting. hado 99 had the potential to become the ultimate spell. However Tenkotsuki remarked that that knowledge worked against the inventor because the inventor lacked proficiency in other areas, so hado 99 has potential, it's full power hasn't been realized because no one thought to incorporate the physical arts like zanjutsu into the spell. so overall, it's incomplete at worst, flawed at best.
>>
>>1302763
Yeah, you put it better. Although it's the 'dare to assert that their sorcery is greater than my own' which I think >>1302672 was talking about, as Tenko in this chapter hasn't shown any signs of anger/wounded pride.
>>
>>1302801
I was thinking that since Tenkotsuki clearly wants our kido to be greater then anyone else’s, she must really be happy about the results of that crit train.
>>
>>1302801
I think it's pretty obvious that the guy never acted like his own magic was better than hers. He was just working with what he had and did a damn good job. She even mentioned that without being an actual deity you couldn't do the spell perfectly as it was intended. His magic would never be like the gods' and he probably just worked with what he had to git gud because he was ass at everything else and never acted like he was the best ever.
>>
>>1302946
Tenkotsuki may be a very proud individual by nature, but she recognizes a good job when she sees it. After all she bothered to familiarize herself with the numbered kido system out of sheer academic interest, which by her standards is high praise.

>>1302931
Literally all smiles. She's thrilled that her wielder is approaching the point where (at least in terms of the numbered spells) they'll be in an equal partnership.
>>
>>1304420
It's been eating at me, i gotta wonder if there's a bakudo equivalent, a binding spell to end all binding spells, incorporating the methods of every one before it.
It can't be #99 as we know it, it's far too weak.

But #99 is also strange in that it has multiple segments, requires setup like a proper seal.
It makes me think that maybe there are more than two steps to #99.
>>
File: index.jpg (8 KB, 225x224)
8 KB
8 KB JPG
>>1304491
Specifically, a *lot* more than two steps, if the #99 hado is anything to go by.
>>
>>1304491
>>1304493
Well, Kin is only one step... maybe two if you count the two distinct versions depicted as separate steps. Bankin is three steps, the last of which has never been depicted as Ichigo basically exploded out of the first two before the third connected.

So it's hard to judge what it does exactly, but it certainly seems to build on previous techniques that all involve penetrating bolts of some kind, wrappings, or heavy objects falling from the sky.
>>
>>1304501
That's what i'm saying.
You could probably take it all the way, if you knew how.

But first you'd have to bind or otherwise incapacitate the target sufficiently that they couldn't bust out before you've added enough layers to bind them permanently.

That must be how they bound people like arturo for long enough to get a seal in place.

Gozan is the term for the five most important Buddhist temples in Kamakura (originally) or Kyoto (since it became the capital through present), spelled as "Five Mountains". The characters used here however are "Five Slash Heaven Killing" or more figuratively "Five Slashes Divine Murder".

“You want me to train with the greatest living prodigy in hakuda?” Miyako asks, as if unsure that you've just said words to that effect.

You nod calmly. “That's right. The force of your punch was off, but its elemental nature has fascinating potential... potential that sadly I wouldn't have time to help you draw on while working with the others on more conventional technique.”

“Just show her what you showed me and she'll understand why I sent you.”

After seeing your sister-in-law off, you turn your attention back to the assembled Lieutenants. “That was good for a first effort... Omaeda, you wasted too much energy. Renji, you used your muscles too much to compensate for your lack of control. Momo, you used too much energy protecting your fists and not enough enhancing the force of your strike. Kira... good technique, but you need to strike with a bit more confidence. You can and should be doing better.”

Demonstrate the Oni Flick technique for Omaeda and Renji, control is their weakness. Have Kira and Momo spar, hopefully that'll spur them to use more force in their blows.

Is this okay for a write-in? Or will splitting our attention be too much.
>>
>>1305472
>>Demonstrate the Oni Flick technique, have them try to perform it to build their reiatsu control.
It is pretty simple from a training standpoint. None of the strengths they used to compensate would really apply.

Omaeda would still probably need something to get his energy usage dialed in. Probably something like two targets, one behind another. The first target should break, while the one behind it shouldn't, if the point is about control.
>>
>>1305497
I think that kira and momo lack aggressiveness, there's no real willpower or killing potential behind their strikes.

Possibly the best thing that we can do to bring that out of them is to put them in a situation where they have no other choice but to become aggressive, to use their strength and focus to the utmost or face severe consequences.
Something just short of killing them.

“And how am I supposed to use my muscles less than that?” Renji demands. “If I hit it any softer it won't even count as a punch!”

“Like this,” you insist casually, raising your left hand towards one of the wooden dummies and flicking at it with your thumb and middle finger. The powerful blast of focused reiatsu splinters the dummy in a cloud of wooden spears and needles... you thought that was a small amount of power you put behind it! Even worse is the cracking to the massive stone foundation your top officers' homes and the surrounding gardens rest upon, with several stone blocks having been crumbled into dust.

The Lieutenants all stand around staring in disbelief at the results, a total lack of a dummy where there had been one seconds before and collateral damage even further downrange, with no readily apparent explanation for how you got from point A to point B.

“So... that was stronger than I thought,” you muse, rubbing at the back of your neck sheepishly. “I usually use that one at closer ranges than that, so I hardly ever get to see what its actual range is. Maybe I should set up a more durable target for you.”

“That was hakuda?” Hinamori asks, still staring at the damage.

“Yeah, I've seen Captain Shihōin practice it once or twice,” Omaeda explains, also staring at the same thing. “It's all the amplification of a heavy hakuda strike without physical contact... I'd hate to see what an actual punch that strong would do to a person.”

“You wouldn't need a medic as much as you'd need a janitor,” Kira mutters.

You extend your hand once more, causing the Lieutenants to instinctively draw away from you.

“Dankū.”

The Lieutenants breathe a collective sigh of relief as the barrier springs into existence.

“Try focusing your energy, same way you saw me do it,” you instruct. “It should happen fairly naturally, though your control will be poor at first. That's what you'll have to work on.”

Once again Omaeda succeeds in overdoing it, but this time there's a noticeable consequence to it. The reiatsu builds up and releases prematurely, breaking his finger and leaving it at an odd angle. He stares at it in momentary disbelief before howling in pain and holding it out in front of him like it's caught fire and holding it any closer would burn the rest of his body.

Hinamori doesn't see much of a result at first, but manages a weak version of the technique without hurting herself. Renji makes a similar mistake to Omaeda, but instead of breaking a finger the concussion of the blast throws him flat on his ass and leaves him blushing furiously in embarrassment. Of all four of them Kira fares the best, with another relatively weak but technically sound Oni Flick.

“Well, that first round speaks for itself,” you declare, grabbing Omaeda by the wrist as he runs past and casually snapping his finger back into place in a fresh howl of pain. “Some of you are making progress.”

“I couldn't harness it properly,” Renji mutters, staring at his hands. “Just like with kidō.”

“There's a reason for that,” you explain calmly. “Hakuda at this level and kidō both rely on high levels of reiatsu control. Keep at both and you'll see simultaneous improvement in both. Abandon one and the other will stagnate.”

You ponder the situation carefully before deciding what you need to do next. “You four continue with this exercise until you get it right, I have to go check on some other students of mine.”

“You mean Rukia and that human girl?” Renji asks. He'd be raising an eyebrow if he had an eyebrow to raise.

“That's right. I have a responsibility to make sure they're up to snuff by the time Aizen makes his move.”

Heading back to the garden where Rukia and Tatsuki have been training, you find them both glancing about nervously... they probably felt the shock of the platform beneath them being pummeled by your hakuda.

“Sorry about that,” you apologize, taking a seat near them. “So, how are things going with you two?”

“I feel that my hakuda has improved somewhat, Captain,” Rukia inclines her head. “Being tested from dawn until dusk day after day has forced me to improve in ways normal duty and instruction have not required.”

“And I'm starting to get used to how to use my powers,” Tatsuki adds, glancing at her sparring partner. “I can just about keep up with Rukia here by using my zanpakuto.”

“Good progress then,” you nod appreciatively. “But have you begun to really incorporate what you've learned from each other into actual combat?”

Tatsuki offers you a sly grin as Rukia adjust how Sode no Shirayuki sits at her waist. “Well, there's one way for you to find out...”

yes, but Tatsuki was working on shunpo. Being able to keep up with Rukia after training for a week means that either she has an Ichigo-level growth rate, or that Rukia is pretty shit at that too. doesn't really scream "good fighter" if she's bad at everything but kido, and that seems to be her level right now

Can shingigami have babies?
>>
>>1307283
IIRC yoruichi was born in Soul Society. Her dad's head of C46.
>>
>>1307663
Correct, and so was Byakuya.

As for Rukia, she's been picking up advanced hakuda about as well as the Lieutenants are. Tatsuki has the advantage of a busted-ass zanpakuto that makes hakuda fairly instinctive for her, and the rest of her training will focus on finding ways to use that power to compensate for her total lack of kido ability. After all she was second in Japan at karate even with a broken arm, her ability to punch stuff good is more than adequate.
>>
>>1307138
And this is precisely why Rukia isn't useless: at the very least she always has the time and crayons to explain things.

>>1307109
Yea, also if she was any good at zanjutsu OR hakuda she ought to have some degree of footwork and defensive awareness and not just be comic relief tier skilled. Must have something to show for fifty years of experience as a commando, right?

>>1307691
And not to beat a dead horse but, unlike the lieutenants, Rukia has been under Riku's care for decades already. I think it is that fact more than any other that makes her shortcomings hard to explain.

>>1307144
79, towards the end.
>>
>>1305699
Any particular desires? Otherwise it would be Meninas.
>>
>>1307809
That reminds me: what were the Lieutenants thoughts upon seeing the Oni Flick?
For bonus fun, Miyako, Rukia, and Tatsuki’s reactions if they had been there.
>>
>>1307691
Yes, but second in Japan in high school karate really shouldn't really be that much compared to even Academy hakuda. The fact that Tatsuki is on par with a century- old, Lieutenant- level shinigami in any aspect means that shinigami failed to learn that aspect at all. The fact that Tatsuki seems to already be either as good as or better than Rukia in every physical aspect is kind of pathetic on Rukia's part
>>
>>1307824
Remember what Queen said last thread:
>But advanced hakuda requires much stronger reiatsu and better control over it, because it harnesses both what you'd call "inner" and "external" power. Which Tatsuki can do instinctively with her zanpakuto, but Rukia and the others have to re-learn to a degree.
So apparently Tatsuki’s zanpakuto lets her skip ahead in the learning process.
>>
>>1305704
Omakes idea: Tenkotsuki and Rosa manifest and end up in a drinking contest. They both get utterly smashed. Riku has to clean up after them.
>>
>>1307830
which honestly just raises further questions, since that means Tatsuki's already got a strangely good relationship with her sword. Or instinctive fighting knowledge+being able to become incorporeal are only the start of its shika's abilities, which kind of clashes with how zanpakuto work
>>
>>1307830
Recall that its ability is to let Tatsuki redistribute various properties through her body: that includes reiatsu of course meaning hakuda literally comes naturally to her. Other students are forced to alter and adjust their basic stances and strikes, because adding "internal" power to the mix means techniques learned prior to that point suddenly become inefficient and awkward.

It's like going from drawing pictures to sculpting, there's a whole new dimension to things that Rukia and the other Lieutenants have to work with. Aside from Omaeda, whose main fault is that he's still working out this whole "restraint" thing Yoruichi keeps talking about.
>>
>>1307842
I would like to see that.
>>
>>1307845
So the sword is enhancing the power Tatsuki already had?
>>
>>1307850
It's more like an arrancar's zanpakuto than anything else, only the abilities she had sealed into it can be so esoteric that it's still left a significant learning curve for how she uses them once released... like how does one even begin to shift around their "tangibility"? What does that even mean? At least reiatsu is something you can feel, something you can define, but how can you define the absence of physical presence especially if you're a teenager?
>>
>>1307853
has there ever been a point where Riku or Tenkotsuki had to explain a concept to a person using sock puppets?
>>
>>1307853
Yeah, I do remember Riku saying it would be more like an arrancar's zanpakuto, though it seems I forgot her saying at the end of thread 75:

- Background: The Wind-Swept Isle -
Unst may as well have been the edge of the world for the people who once lived there. Besides the rowans and crabapples which hide in its narrow valleys and below cliffs the terrain is rugged and harsh, covered in grasses, lichens, and herbs which cling tenaciously even to bare rock in places. It hardly seems fit for human habitation, and yet many crofter families once made their livelihoods there at the mercy of the North Sea and the Atlantic.

Until they were driven out, that is.

The Clearances hit the Shetland Isles hard, landowners evicted tenant farmers who had in many cases been working the land for generations and drove them away to find their fortunes elsewhere. Many fled as far as America, determined that if they were being forced to start over they would make as clean a start as they could. Others congregated in towns and cities, finding what industrial work they could.

Some fared worse than others.

With the severity of the winter storm she had to fight through to get to Unst in at all, Bambietta was hardly surprised to find the croft she was seeking had collapsed. These weren't exactly intended to be the most modern or elaborate dwellings: many had only one room heated by a single hearth. This home had two rooms at one point, the walls of the larger having mostly fallen in as the roof collapsed, it seemed. No sense knocking as the door had fallen from its frame, so she stepped inside.

“I'm not too late,” she muttered, shutting her eyes and standing still in the rain. Now that she had some shelter from the wind at least she could try and figure out what happened here.

In the smaller room she found the sole survivor: a young woman with light-red hair, pinned underneath part of her home's ceiling. The woman's eyes opened slowly, blinking against the rain as she tried to orient herself.

“Who... are you?” she struggled as Bambietta stared down at her.

“Another like you, and your family,” she replied before turning back towards the main room. “Your father was in there?”

“And my mother,” the woman grimaced, struggling not to cry. “And my brother and sister.”

“I was sent for him if I'm being honest,” Bambietta admitted, staring at the rubble where she could just pick out the shape of a man's arm. “But you interest me more. How have you survived this long?”

“I used a technique my father showed me once,” the red-haired woman explained. “It saved my lower body from harm, though I lack the strength to free myself... I thought I was going to starve here alone.”

“Were you sent to lend me your strength, stranger?”
>1/?
>>
>>1310460
“That technique is called Blut Vene,” Bambietta explained, finally turning back to her conversation partner and seating herself on some of the rubble nearby. “And although I do know its companion Blut Arterie, which could release you... no. I will not be lending you my strength.”

“How can you be so heartless?”

Bambietta then produced a small crystal vial from her white coat, ensuring that the fallen quincy cound see it. “Instead I intend to offer you a way to grow stronger, so that you don't need my strength.”

“You say you came for my father,” the woman narrowed her eyes. “And then you offer me some magical way to release myself from this prison? What is the cost I wonder? And what is your aim?”

“Our King needs warriors,” Bambietta replied calmly, rolling the vial between her fingers. “If you'd guessed just now that the price would be fighting for him that'd make you a clever girl.”

“You speak as though you were my senior.”

Bambiettta grinned maliciously. “I am, girl. By seven centuries, at least.”

“Seven hundred years?” the red-haired woman's eyes widened as the debris on top of her shifted, drawing her focus back to the task at hand. “And so you've served this king all that time?”

“Yup!” Bambietta declared proudly before her grin slowly gave way to a frown. “My parents served him before me, but they were killed by the shinigami when I was little. So I took their place... funny. Can't remember the day that actually happened... but I've been recruiting others like you and me ever since to replace our losses.”

“And so these... these 'shinigami' will be our enemy?”

“That's right.”

The red-haired woman managed to lean back far enough to gaze at the wreckage behind her head, where her family lay silently entombed. “I have no future on this rock anyway.”

Bambietta nodded calmly, setting the vial down on the earthen floor next to her new comrade. “My name is Bambietta Basterbinne, also known as “the Explode” in certain circles. You?”

“Meninas McAllon,” she replied, laying her head back against the floor. “I'm ready.”

Karakura High School isn't exactly renowned for being a place to beat the late-summer heat, but its students hardly have much of a choice. They're here because the term has already begun anew, and much to their surprise Kurosaki of all people is actually present. Kuchiki seems to have transferred out again much to the boys' dismay, and confusingly enough Tatsuki is absent as well. According to Inoue she's been training for some event a few months in the future, but as for what sort of event it's going to be the poor girl's been astoundingly vague with the details.

“Things seem to finally be getting back to normal around here,” Ichigo sighs at the bell marking the beginning afternoon classes as his friends file back in after lunch... at least most of them.

“Took long enough,” Keigo agrees. “The whole situation was so nuts though... I'm kinda worried about Tatsuki.”

“She's fine,” Chad insists quietly.

“Chad's right,” Ichigo agrees immediately. “If there's anyone you don't have to worry about it's her.”

“Yeah, who you really need to worry about is yourselves,” Riku adds.

Ichigo practically falls out of his seat in shock. “How the hell did you get in here!?”

“Through the window,” Riku offers, indicating the direction with a thumb over his shoulder. “Like usual.”

“That's not normal!” Ichigo protests.

“I never said it was,” Riku counters smugly.

“Why are you here!?” Keigo demands in a panic, glancing about the room as if expecting black-clad ninjas to burst from the shadows and drag him off kicking and screaming for some crime he didn't evn realize he'd committed.

“To hand in my homework, of course,” the Captain shrugs dismissively.

“I was hoping to hear that, Kusajishi,” instructor Ochi grins menacingly behind her. “Welcome back from vacation, glad you decided to show up!”

“Here you are, ma'am,” Riku replies with a grin of her own, handing the papers over. “All in order.”

“Is that so?” Ochi continues to grin. “Well then, I suppose you don't mind if I go ahead and grade these now?”

“It's your choice to make,” Riku grins back, just as confidently as ever in the face of such a challenge. “So by all means, feel free. I have no objections.”

At first Ochi continues to grin as she sorts through the papers, then the grin gradually fades somewhat as Riku's only grows. As Ochi continues to read through the stack of work she's been handed with a yet-unused red pen, Ichigo raises an eyebrow.

“Did you really do all that work yourself?” he mutters in a low voice.

Riku shrugs. “”What do you think, Ichigo?”

“It was a little tough working in the time to finish it, what with my responsibilities at the shrine,” she continues as Ochi sets the papers aside on her desk. “So I hope it's satisfactory.”

“Better than satisfactory,” Ochi grins once more. “It's perfect. Every single question, all of the work you've shown, from the kanji up through the biochemistry. Every single answer you wrote out was flawless.”

“You flatter me,” Riku bows slightly.

“If your exams from last term weren't also astounding I wouldn't believe you did all of this on your own,” Ochi waves her students to their seats. “So until I find some evidence that it's not all your work I suppose I have to accept this. Now then, we've just gotten word that our class will have four temporary transfer students. Please make them feel welcome.”

“You can come in!” she announces, and through the door stroll four figures that make all the color run from Ichigo's face... and run into Keigo's.

First in the group is Tia Halibel, in an unzipped upper-classmen's uniform and a shirt just a little too short for her stature, with a small disposable mask covering her mouth and nose. Apacci follows with a perfectly-fitted uniform and thighhigh socks, Sung-Sun immediately after her in sleeves just a bit too long, and finally Mila Rose who wears a v-neck shirt under her uniform with no tie.

“Tia Halibel,” Halibel announces, writing her name in kana on the board. “I'm from Sakhalin Oblast, in the Russian Federation.”

“Emilou Apacci, same place,” Apacci declares, writing her name beneath Halibel's. “My family works for Mistress Halibel's.”

“Franceska Mila Rose,” Mila Rose adds her name, resolutely scrawling the kana next to Apacci's in an attempt to avoid being showed up. “My family's been working for Mistress Halibel's family even longer.”

“And I am Cyan Sung-Sun,” Sung-Sun concludes, calmly signing next to Apacci on the other side. “My family are business partners of the Halibel family.”

“Business partners?” Apacci and Mila Rose snort in unison. “As if!”

Halibel meets Riku's eyes and offers a noncommittal shrug.

How much regret did Keigo have when he lusted after Riku knowing her relation being Ichigo's aunt and figuring out she was a shinigami?
>>
You know, back when I was in school it was a matter of course that Shinigami would show up there as students, and especially Rukia given her young appearance and short stature.
Now though? I wonder why anyone else even bothered. And what he'll it's putting the school systems through. I can only imagine the year book with a page dedicated to students who only showed up for a week, no pictures but we totes miss you all.

“Well, if you're done arguing you can take your seats,” Ochi says, staring out at the room. “I see a few open spots... Miss Halibel, I think you can take this one up front...”

After a brief disagreement over who got to sit nearest to Halibel, the four arrancar find themselves in the middle of a lecture on ancient Japanese waka poetry: specifically the Man'yōshū, or “Collection of Ten Thousand Leaves”, compiled during the archaic Nara period.

“Kusajishi, could you read this passage aloud please?” Ochi requests as most of the students in the room puzzle over the pages of old characters. Riku stands and clears her throat for a dramatic reading.

“Living people will eventually die, such are we. So while in this world, let's have fun!” Riku recites confidently, the characters resembling many of the old spellings she's familiar with from the Seireitei. Then she takes her seat.

“Very good, Kusajishi,” Ochi nods thoughtfully. “The next one please... Kurosaki?”

“Silently... studying?” he muses for a moment. “No... silently seeking wisdom... will never match... drinking sake... and... something weeping? Ah, drunken. Silently seeking wisdom will never match drinking sake and drunken weeping.”

“Surprisingly good job, Kurosaki,” Ochi muses happily. “And here I thought you'd been slacking off. Now then... how about Miss Halibel?”

“How about what?” Halibel asks.

Ochi gestures towards the paper. “I know modern kanji may be hard enough if you're from Russia, let alone old ones, so if you'd like...”

“Ah,” Halibel exclaims quietly. “Heaven's clouds nearby grow bright with the sound of gods. Awesome to see, and sad I am to miss it.”

Her attendants all seem exuberant at the performance, while Ochi seems more confused than anything else. “That was... impressive, actually. Genuinely impressive! But why were you hesitating then?”

“I'm not sure I understand,” Halibel admits, gazing evenly at the teacher. “Why do students in Japan recite such things?”

“Well, because it's a part of our cultural history of course!” Ochi declares exuberantly. “Sure the words may be old and the style antiquated, but it's an insight into where we came from as much as it is a technical challenge.”

“A shared history...” Halibel muses.

“Made all the more important now, in the digital age,” Ochi continues to explain. “Even today it's important to have something that provides a sense of common identity.”

The poetry-reading and history lessons continue until the end of regular period, when the bell indicates a welcome reprieve for the students.

“Kusajishi, if you could stay behind for a moment please?” Ochi announces over the noise of hurried packing and chatter. Ichigo glances over his shoulder at his aunt, briefly wondering about the matter before deciding it was none of his business.

Once the class is empty, Ochi sighs. “So who are you, really? And who were those four you brought with you?”

“What do you mean who am I?” Riku asks cannily.

“Kurosaki Masaki filled me in on some of the details about what's been going on in Karakura town,” Ochi explains, sitting down behind her desk. “About why her son and his friends keep going missing, about why we keep getting transfer students who appear and disappear without warning.”

Riku sighs wearily, sitting at a nearby desk. “So how much did she tell you?”

“Only that it has something to do with ghosts and monsters,” Ochi admits. “Much beyond that and I doubt I'd have understood anyway. I gather you're involved though? Are you really a Shinto priestess, or are you something else?”

“What I am is bound by a certain set of rules and duties,” Riku replies cautiously, “among which is a need for secrecy and non-interference with what you'd call 'society at large'. But yes, you'd be right in thinking I'm involved... watching over my adoptive brother's son is another of my duties.”

“I see,” Ochi nods quietly. “So that answers one question... sort of. So what's up with this round of guests?”

“I wanted them to get some firsthand experience,” Riku dodges the question somewhat. “Figured it would be good for them. Don't worry, their conduct while they're here is also one of my responsibilities.”

“They're not really from Russia at all, are they?”

Riku shakes her head. “A bold-faced lie. The truth would make even less sense to you.”

“Try me.”

“They're beings of extraordinary age and power,” Riku declares, “less than gods, but more powerful than what you'd consider the province of mortals.”

“You're right,” Ochi nods sagely. “That doesn't make much sense.”

“Told you.”

huh... Ochi sensei seems super chill about this...
>>

“One last question,” Ochi sighs. “And could you please answer me directly?”

“That depends on the question,” Riku frowns, knowing that to a degree her hands are bound in the matter. “But at very least I can promise to tell you no lies.”

“Are you and all the things you're involved in a threat to my students?”

After a moment, Riku nods her head carefully. “Yes. However make no mistake, this is a trade-off. Your students would be in danger from what's happening in Karakura town in any event... but for Ichigo's presence and mine they're safer than they would be otherwise.”

“Sadly, on that you have only my word.”

“And Masaki-san's,” Ochi nods in understanding. “Will these new students of mine be returning at some point? Or will the weirdness be limited to just Kurosaki and the others?”

“If you'd allow them, I think they'd like that,” Riku smiles calmly. “They seem to benefit from a more human perspective... it helps them understand things about their own existence. Puts it all in focus... and to be honest, I appreciate the perspective myself. Reminds me what I'm supposed to be working for."

"I'll be sure to warn you next time as a courtesy."

“Then I'll instruct Kurosaki to deliver their work to them,” Ochi grins almost maliciously. “Wouldn't do to have my students slacking even if they are some kind of superbeings... by the way, be honest with me. Did you really do all that work on your own?”

Riku's smile quickly becomes a smirk. “I'm over two centuries old, teacher. I've got a good memory and a lot of experience to draw on.”

At that Ochi laughs deeply, having to wipe a tear from her eye after a few moments. “It's funny, but that has to be the weirdest thing I've heard all day. You really don't look it, you know?”

“Hey,” Riku shrugs, “what can I say? When you know you'll live for centuries you take care of yourself.”

“Well, just make sure you do your homework and that none of my kids get eaten by a ghost monster and we'll be cool,” Ochi grins before nodding towards the door. “I guess you've got a lot to take care of?”

“I do what I can.”

So, serious question:

We have a pocket dimension which we can influence through our will power.

Why don't we practice that to train the use of divine reishi?

Also: Hyperbolic time chamber anyone?

Just finished bindge reading, nice work Queen, i look forward to participating the next time you run.
