You wait by your cellphone. This could be it. Today decides whether or not you walk into work tomorrow as Rank Two or Rank One. Why does the Captain have to be so cruel to you by making you suffer this wait? It’s only 5 in the morning! She could stand to tell you now so you don’t spend the rest of the day panicking, PANICKING.

AH, YOU’RE PANICKING!

Josephina looks at you from the mirror as the rest of the girls do up their hair and make up. “Elodie. You look like you are going to tear a hole in that phone with your mind. Qu’est-ce qu’il y a?”

Winona says, “She’s waiting on a big promotion.”

“Oooh. She’s already been promoted twice. Elodie could be the fastest one to Rank One in LGA’s history!” says Josephina.

“Yep.” You’re already prepared. Anyway. Just steel your resolve in case she says Lyra got the job and not you.

Ingrid looks at you, quirking her brow. “Well, if you ask me, I’m not looking forward to next month. We got Tankery, and we have classes, not to mention working on the ship.” She shakes her head. “Eugh.”

“Yeah. Postseason is in September, along with our last few matches,” says Stack. “Y’ask me, them breaks in the middle was kinda pointless.”

Winona sits down next to you on the bench, smiling. “Try not to let it get to you, Ellie. Focus on other stuff.” She winks at you, smirking. “Like me.”

“You’re right, I need something to do.” You grab your phone, shoving it into your skirt pocket. “From here on, I’m busy all day today! Nothing will get-“ Your phone rings. “YAAAAGHAA!” You rip the phone from your pocket and answer it to the bemused gaze of your crew. “Elodie Zumwalt, Block Command.”

“Hi, Ellie!” says Mom. Oh. It’s just Mom. “How’s our pride and joy?”

“I’m fine, Mom,” you state. “Thank you.”

“That’s great, I was just calling to check in. Your Father and I have been looking at some volunteering opportunities outside of our work. We’re going to be working in the cafeteria lines for General Studies come labor day. Isn’t that so exciting?”

“Yeah, yeah, it is,” you say. Oh God. Your heart. Stop racing. Please.

“Anyway, I won’t take up too much of your time. Have fun today, Ellie!” She hangs up then.

“…” You take a deep breath, then grab your chest. STOP IT HEART, IT’S OVER. You look at Winona, who flutters her eyes at you. “My heart isn’t beating for you, Winona. Now if you excuse me. I am going to make myself useful by any means today.”

You and Josephina walk the early morning streets of LGA together. You and her simply wear the uniforms for now. You notice that Josephina is actually now wearing the Fall/Winter Uniform. Her gaffe must have been fixed some time ago and may never have noticed. Still, she towers over you, and yet looks like she might fall over from a stiff breeze. “I’m sorry I didn’t get to spend too much time with you, Josephina.”

“It is alright, Elodie. I know how busy you can be,” she says with a smile.

“Have you at least made any friends outside of our tank?” you ask.

“Well… no, not really,” she says, looking down at the ground, frowning.

> - 10 MORALE TO JOSEPHINA

Yikes. “Well. Hey, it’s only been a few months. You’ve got four years of High School ahead of you, plus summers as Naval Studies.”

“Oui, I suppose.” Josephina points ahead. “There’s a good breakfast takeout place I know up there. I can get us something to eat while we walk. It serves regular American dishes if you are interested.”

“Any seafood?” you ask. She shakes her head. Ah, shame. “Well, just get me a hashbrown and a coffee.” Josephina nods, and leads you inside the takeout place. It’s not a restaurant mind you. This is a place entirely dedicated to giving people food on the go. No tables, just chairs for waiting. Barely bigger than your office actually. Josephina stands in line with everyone else while you wait in the chairs.

While that happens though, a mother and her young girl stand behind Josephina. The little girl tugs on Josephina’s skirt. Josephina turns around, smiling at her. “You’re tall.” Josephina flinches, her smile and optimism gone. “Have phone companies tried to use you as a cell tower?” Josephina flinches again, her eyes wide.

“Tina!” The mother scolds her daughter. “That’s rude.”

Josephina turns around again, her happiness gone.

“Hey, don’t be so rude.” You stand up as well. The kid looks down, pouting. “Apologize.”

The Mom nudges the kid. “Go on, Tina.”

The kid sighs. “Sorry, miss.” Josephina looks back, nodding. She looks at her Mom. “But she really is tall.”

“That’s no excuse,” says Mom.

> + 5 MORALE TO JOSEPHINA

You and Josephina munch on some fried eggs, hashbrowns, and bacon in some plastic containers. “Thanks for that, Elodie.”

“You don’t need to talk that from kids a quarter of your size,” you explain. “Not that you’re-“

“No, no, it’s okay,” she says. Josephina sighs. The two of you found a park bench to sit at. There, you can hear the swift crack of a wooden bat as it meets a baseball. The boys from the Skycraft team were playing a quick round of baseball together. Jack had managed to hit the ball into the field safely apparently, and was now on second base, with Jeep Jockey coming up to bat. “I’m used to it.”

“Clearly not,” you state. If she had that kind of reaction to a kid saying that. Kids are ignorant half the time to what they say anyway. “I mean, you can’t let people get to you about your height. Believe me, there are worse things that can grab people’s attention.” You look down at your chest and sigh. Ugh.

“I suppose so.” Josephina crunches down on some hashbrown. “Still, thank you for spending some time with me, Elodie.”

> “You mention a lot that you’re interested in Helicraft. What’s that like?”

> “Hey, I’ve got some horror stories of people gawking at my body.”

“Hey, I’ve got some horror stories of people gawking at my body,” you explain. “Some things just immediately catch the eye. Your height for instance.” Josephina nods, understanding that. “I remember giving presentations in middle school and the only thing boys were interested in was very obvious to me.” You point to your breasts. Josephina nods again, frowning. “Then there was that time girls have tried to call me slut or whore just because all the boys were after me.”

“Middle school.” Josephina shakes her head.

“Middle school.” The perfect storm of hormones, kids and their lack of empathy, their lack of understanding of the world and what other people feel. You survived it fine though because you could honestly give two shits about what they thought of you. You were busy studying to get on an Academyship. They were wasting away in the moment.

Josephina sighs, watching as Jeep Jockey takes a swing at the pitch. With a loud crack, the baseball goes sailing over the head of the first baseman and into the outfield. And with that, Jeep Jockey has scored a point or something for his team by getting Jack safely to home plate. “Did you ever do Tankery in middle school?”

“Nah, parents couldn’t afford to send me to Little League,” you explain. “What about you?”

“No, helicraft,” she explains. Ah, right. “Though, I must admit, I feel suffocated by it sometimes.”

“Really? You talk as if you love it,” you say.

“I do, but-… my mother and father are quite insistent I pursue it as soon as I can,” she explains. “And I would like to, in my own time. But… they don’t seem to understand that it’s not my passion, it’s a hobby. I like Tankery as I do Helicraft. Helicopters are beautiful creations. Tanks as well. I can appreciate both.”

“How insistent are they?” you ask.

“Well, they mostly ask when I’ll do helicraft or why I went to a school that doesn’t have a helicraft program,” she says simply. “Still, one needs to be rich to practice it, or know a parent who’s a helicopter pilot. I have the latter.” Right, right. “I love him dearly.”

“Overbearing though,” you say.

“Slightly.”

> “Well, I can’t say I understand.”

You sigh. “Well, I can’t say I understand,” you say.

“Well it’s just…” She groans. “Oh, forget it. In the end, I love Helicraft and Tankery. But I don’t know if I want to devote my life to either just yet.” That’s a better way of putting it you suppose. Way you see it, you’d love to actually be a professional Tankery commander, do what your Mom couldn’t. But at the same time, how many years could that last? Maybe you need to do something more practical with your life.

Passion versus practicality. The cruelest conflict in one’s life you suppose.

You fold your arms, smiling at Josephina. “Hey. You find what makes you happy first. Then you can decide.”

“Yeah.” She smiles back. “I guess I should.” She stands up, smiling at you. Her phone rings at that. She takes it out of her pocket. “Josephina. Hello? Oh, Winona. Yeah, me and Elodie are in the park.” You lean back on the bench, watching the baseball game unfold. So Jeep Jockey is now on second… somehow. You didn’t see how. The next batter up hits the ball out, but it gets caught by the guy between second and third base. Jeep Jockey stops himself dead and tries running back, but the ball comes to second.

“Pickle, pickle!” yells a defender. They surround Jeep Jockey on either side, throwing the ball between themselves to trap him. Jockey however manages to edge himself closer to third, bit by bit before dodging a tag and diving the plate. The boys on his team cheer and holler for the completely exhausted boy.

Josephina sighs, hanging up. “That was Winona.”

“What’d she say?” you ask.

“She was checking in on-“ Your phone rings this time. You take it out.

The captain.

OH FUCK. You stand up, taking it. “Captain!”

“Elodie. How are you doing?” asks the Captain.

“I’m doing great, Captain, thank you. What about you?”

“Ah, I’m swamped actually. I have to help set things up for FleetFest this weekend. We’re meeting with other Captains, we’re making bets on who’ll win the All-Star Game, who gets voted in, all that stuff.” That doesn’t sound swamped at all, but okay. “But listen, I’ll make this short. I made my decision on who’ll be Chief of Logistics.”

“Really?” Josephina looks on at you, curiously. “Who did you choose?”

“I chose Caldwell.”

Oh.

The Captain continues. “No offense meant to you, Elodie. But you are right, you have Tankery to tend to, you’ve got your family here as well. The work of Chief of Logistics is demanding and I need someone who can devote the majority of their time to it. If I could have you though, I would choose you. But I guess I got to you too late.”

“Yeah, yeah.” You slowly sit down, nodding. “So does-“

“I already let Caldwell know a few minutes ago. Tomorrow you’ll be the sole Block Officer in that Block. If there’s a job in the Rank One position for you that can match your time, I will let you know, Elodie.”

“Yes, thank you, Captain.”

“Good. So sorry to break it to you like this. I’ll see you at work.” With that, the Captain hangs up.

No promotion huh?

Well, you weren’t exactly gunning for it but… still.

That really hurt. “Elodie?” Josephina tilts her head, looking concerned. “Is everything?”

You sigh. “Yeah, everything’s fine. I just didn’t get the job.” Josephina frowns deeply, then nods. “It’s okay. I didn’t really want it anyway. It would’ve gotten in the way of Tankery.”

“Well. Alright.” Josephina pats your shoulder, smiling. “At least you’re still with us, Elodie.” You hear the whooping cheers and applause as Jeep Jockey breaks down the line in the middle of the pitcher’s throw. He dives and slides in, getting his hand on the plate before the catcher can tag him. With the game apparently over, Jockey’s team run in from their dug out and pick him up, cheering him.

Still, you decide to give a quick text to Lyra. Josephina looks over your shoulder as you type it in.

“Congrats on the job.”

“Thanks! Sorry for you, will try and find something for you.”

Well, at least she knows not to kick you when you’re done. You sigh, folding your arms. You shouldn’t be that broken up but you are.

Ugh. You hate this.

Still, at least it means you can still do Tankery.

Josephina smiles. “Tell you what, Elodie. What else do you want to do today? I’ll follow you.”

You knock on the door of their new house. Mom opens up, then she grins widely. “Elodie! Ooohhh!” She hugs you tight, happy as can be. “Oh, and you brought one of your friends too! Josephina, right?” Josephina smiles happily. “Good, good!” She snaps her fingers. “I’m remembering! Come on in, I can cook you lunch really quickly.”

You and Josephina step inside the house, and see the once barren place now filled with a couch, an arm chair, a simple TV, a book shelf, a table and some chairs…

And that’s it.

Dad smiles as he places down a simple bacon and egg sandwich for the two of you on plates. “Yeah. We didn’t start out with much furniture, I’m not gonna lie. But… look at all this room!” He spins around, his apron swirling around as Mom dusts down the couch. “So much room to do anything you want!”

“Like what?” you ask.

Dad stops his spinning, flopping into the arm chair. “Uh…”

Mom smirks, then leans over and kisses him on the cheek. “Your Father’s been working so hard and so long that he’s forgotten how to relax.”

“Don’t remind me.” Mom was conveniently absent that day. Eugh.

“Anyway.” Mom pours you two some glasses of water. You and Josephina munch down on your sandwiches happy as can be. “It’s nice you two came to visit. We’re already making some friends with our neighbors actually. Guy that lives next to us happens to be a handyman just like your father. Now I can’t get the two of them to shut up whenever I bring up the kitchen sink.”

“Hey! The sink is an important water source,” says Dad. “I ain’t drinking out of a rusty water pipe.”

“Right, right. Just as long as I get hot and cold water, sweetie.”

You spend a couple of hours with Mom and Dad, walking through their house. They even set up a room for you in case you find the roommate life with Winona kind of boring. But overall, things couldn’t be better for them. It’s actually infectious how happy they are. They wave goodbye when you two leave.

And Josephina seems to have caught that bug of joy too. She still munches on another sandwich Mom made for her.

You find the boys slinging around a baseball and lazing around while Jeep Jockey files through a book, crashing back on a chair. Josephina nervously keeps close, looking around at all of the boys. Right now, your presence is now accepted as a regular thing, which means the boys thankfully aren’t just gawking at the two of you. “Jeep Jockey.” He looks up from his book, waving hello. “This is Josephina.”

“Oh right, your driver.” Jeep Jockey shakes hands with Josephina, smiling a little. “Nice to meet you.”

“Oui, likewise.”

“So.” You fold your arms, glaring around at the guys passing the baseball around, wearing baseball gloves and goofing around. “Are you training?”

“Well, I wanted to do flight checkups today, see if I can get through the takeoff procedure without taking off, but the guys wanted to play baseball and they dragged me into he,” he explains. “So, we just played baseball for most of the day.” Really. You look at him, sternly. “Hey, baseball warms up the mind. You gotta have an eye for detail in baseball, same as Skycraft.” He stands up, shutting the book.

“You’re just saying that because you didn’t get anything done today,” you say.

“Well-… no. We didn’t,” he says. “I’ve just-… I’ve just been studying this here book on German warplanes.” He shrugs a bit, disappointed with himself clearly.

“Oh. Um. Thanks, I guess.” He smiles a little at that.

“You play baseball a lot?” you ask.

“Ah, I used to play Little League in Elementary,” he explains. “Don’t remember much of it except I played a lot of right field.” He shrugs. “It’s whatever though. How about we get started then?”

“Sure.”

You, Jack, Josephina, and Rafe stand on the wings and look inside the cockpit as Jeep Jockey sits in and looks at the controls. “Right. Everything look good to see you?” asks Jack. Jeep Jockey nods. “Good. We’re going to start the engine, then you’re going to test out the flaps and the throttle for us. Elodie, Rafe, you two make sure the chocks are in place.” You nod.

With that, you and Rafe step off and look at the yellow chocks blocking the wheels. Firmly in place. Good. Josephina looks in the cockpit. “Wow. It looks nothing like a helicopter cockpit.”

Jack smirks. “Fan of helicraft, Josie?” Josephina nods. “Well, Skycraft isn’t too dissimilar despite the different aircraft involved.”

“This is an F2A Buffalo, oui?”

“Correct,” says Jeep Jockey. “What kind of helicopters you want to fly in Helicraft?”

“The Hind, it’s one of my personal favorites,” she declares. She smiles widely. “I’ve also had a gentle crush on the Kamov Ka-50. Something about the design is so lovely.”

“Um. Guys.” You hate to stop the fun but there’s preflight checks to do.

“Oh, right.” Jeep Jockey looks in. He starts up the engine, and the propeller goes spinning up. You cover your ears with your hands as you step towards the fuselage. “Okay, fuel looks good! Check the flaps!” You all turn your heads to see Jeep Jockey fiddle with the stick, and watch as the ailerons and the rudder move as they should.

“Perfect!” says Jack. “She’s in beautiful condition, Jock!”

Rafe grins. “How about we take her for a spin! There’s still some light left!”

“Uh- I dunno!” says Jeep Jockey. “I don’t think that’s the best idea!”

His first flight in ages shouldn't be in evening conditions, better to do it tomorrow in the middle of the day when the sun's high.

“He’s right! Give it another day or two! Shut the engine off, he needs more time!”

“Ah, dang it.” Rafe snaps his finger, frustrated. With that, the engine gets shut off, and the prop starts winding itself down to a standstill. You wave off the fumes of gas exhaust. Hmph. You all exit out off of the Buffalo. “Right, what now then?”

Jeep Jockey rolls up his sleeve. “I’d say it’s time for dinner actually.”

“Is that food cart girl coming back?” asks Rafe. Must be talking about Penny.

“Nah, she’s visiting the old folks home today,” says Jack. “So guess what, you have to suffer a bit of the old cooking until she comes back tomorrow.” Rafe rolls his eyes. “Come on, girls. We’ll get ya something to eat.”

Everyone sits around the table as you discuss the strategy of the showdown on a whiteboard. You mark off the start point at the bottom of the board. “From here, you’ll start facing opposite directions, tail to tail. You’ll take off, move off to five kilometers away, then you’ll officially begin your showdown. My guess is that The Beast will take this time to start climbing. Which is something you should do too.”

“Problem.” Jack raises his hand. “The G and K series are better climbers than the Buffalo. We’re talking mid to late-war planes against an interwar craft. No matter how fast that Buffalo goes, the Beast will beat them.”

“Jack’s right,” says Jeep Jockey. “He’ll have the drop on me no matter what.”

Josephina glances at the board, squinting. “Why doesn’t Jeep Jockey then force him down to his level?” You all look at her. Josephina blushes a bit. “I mean, in Helicraft, if a helicopter has an altitude advantage, the common strategy is to bait them down to equal level, then force them to stay at that level. Usually that involves having to maneuver with them and take shots at their engines to slow them down.”

“That’s implying you can hit the Beast,” says Rafe. “Nobody’s ever put a hole in that kid’s plane since he first started.” He leans in, looking Josephina in the eye, dead serious. “I hear the Beast isn’t a kid either, he’s just the Devil wearing human skin. Cuz nobody can fly those skies like he does.”

“That’s a load of shit,” says Tony. “The Beast ain’t the Devil. I bet you the Beast is actually a tiny little girl. It’d explain how he can pull those high turns and dives without passing the fuck out.”

“A tiny little girl? No fucking way!” Billy flings a bit of mashed potatoes at Tony. “You ask me, the Beast is just a kid with no legs.”

“And you’re saying I’m full of shit!” Tony huffs.

The problem with forcing someone down to your level is he essentially has to 'take the bait' for it to work. If he decides not to play ball he can just keep diving and recovering all day long. Cloud cover can change that, as long as you stay right at the bottom of the cloud cover it'll be very hard for him to dive down on you, but you can't bet on having the weather on your side.

“Guys. Focus.” You look to Josephina. “Josephina. In helicraft, what kind of things can you do to lure people down to your level?”

Josephina shrugs. “It depends on the pilot. Some like to fake rotor malfunction and start spinning in place, like live bait. Others draw them in using the clouds if there are anyway, and some like to use ambient mountains or hills for cover too. Helicraft is a sport that’s pretty low altitude in the first place anyway. So, I’m not sure how Skycraft can apply any of what I say…” She rubs the back of her neck.

“Not necessarily.” Jack leans forward on the table, smiling at Josephina. “See, Skycraft is pretty lax on equipment regulations. We’re not an Unlimited sport but we’ve got some freedom. Some guys like to use smoke pots, some use bombs with star shells in them, others like to use those smoke dispensers they use in airshows. I even know a guy up in Georgia, sticks high powered floodlights in his wings to blind people.”

“Isn’t that unsporting?” you ask.

“It’s Skycraft.” Jack smirks at that.

“So what do you suggest then? We get a bunch of smoke pots?” asks Jeep Jockey.

“Anything you want, Jeep Jockey. It’s up to you.” The boys nod, agreeing.

“Then the best thing to do against the Beast then…” Josephina rubs her chin. “Is to break sight with him. As long as you’re under cover somehow, you can force him to chase you down at your altitude, where hopefully your turning rate and your maneuverability can aid you against him.”

“Exactly,” you nod at that.

Jeep Jockey smiles as the two of you leave. “Sure you girls don’t need me to drive you home?”

“No thanks, we’ll walk. Besides, I don’t want Winona getting any more ideas.” Jeep Jockey snorts, then waves goodbye to you two as you walk away into the night. You and Josephina walk along the sidewalk. It’s pretty late now. And it’ll be time to hit the sack soon. You say, “How was that, Josephina?” you ask.

“It was great,” she says. “Thanks for today, Elodie.”

“It was nothing, honest,” you say. “I’m just glad you found some common ground with the Skycraft guys.”

“I suppose.” Josephina smiles at you. “Though, really again. It’s nice spending time with you. I hope we can do it again some time.”

“I hope so too. Absolutely.” You smile at Josephina as well. She looks ahead, grinning.

> + 20 MORALE TO JOSEPHINA

“You know.” She looks down at the ground a bit. “This will probably be the most fun summer I’ve had in quite a while.”

“Really?” You cock your head. “It’s not just because of the tournament, is it?”

“Well, it is. But it’s also because I got to know all of you,” she says. “I may not be the most expressive girl I suppose but… just being here is enough.” She pumps her fist, sighing in bliss. “Still. You know, my parents are actually coming to visit for September. So… if you’ll forgive me for remaining quiet.”

“Overbearing?” you ask.

“A little bit. But I still love them all the same, and I know they have my future in mind. But I suppose the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” she explains. “They want good grades, they want me to take Helicraft.” Josephina sighs. “You know, I love Helicraft, I really do. But… it’s no fun when your parents try to make it your life before you even want to make it your life.”

“You should make them understand that,” you say.

“Yes, perhaps.” She shrugs.

Josephina smiles at you. “You said you had horror stories of people ogling your body, no?”

Oh here we go. “Well. A lot of the girls never forgave me for that time I showed up at the 8th grade dance…”
