Chapter 8, part 1: >>1300406

"Listen, just give me some help and I'll dig up more dirt on the Adorned Princeps."

Conrad doesn't answer for several minutes, pulling viciously on his cigarette. Then, he finally says "Well, this has all gone to Hell in a handbasket, anyways. Might as well."

He leans out of his office door. "Neil! Get up here!"

A nebbish-looking man quickly rushes up the stairwell carrying a cup of coffee, his glasses askew. "Hereyougosirsorrysir!"
"What th- no, Neil, I don't want coffee! Give it to one of the goblins! Look, you used to be a librarian, right?"

"Yes, sir, well, actually I was STUDYING to be a librarian, never actually comple-"

"I don't CARE, Neil. Just help my friend Jerry with his research in the Archive, okay?"

"Okay, sir!" He quickly reaches up to adjust his glasses.

Conrad turns back to you. "You happy?"

You find an account from a changeling who claimed to be stolen away by the Adorned Princeps. It describes an incident where the Princeps picked up a dirty scrap of cloth while stalking a village by night and added it to his hoard, only removing it when he found a clean scrap. It seems that he can only let go of a thing if he obtains an item of superior value.

The Solstice event has been going on for a half-hour. People are probably going to wonder where you are if you don't show up soon. Conrad will cover for you if needed, but it'd be best if he didn't have to.

Adorned Princeps's known frailties: may not refuse an offer to bargain, may not make a deal that would result in a net increase of his wealth (and conversely, may not refuse a deal of the same)

You discover an account of the Adorned Princeps murdering a peasant to steal a single copper coin. It's likely that he cannot outright STEAL anything that already belongs to someone else.

Known Frailties:
Minor- Cannot steal, cannot refuse opportunity to bargain, cannot refuse to make a deal that would increase his net wealth.

The crowning is 3 hours away. Conrad will definitely be covering for you if you don't show up soon.

You dismiss Neil (he gratefully stumbles out of the Archive's dust-filled bowels and heads towards a nearby bar) and head to the Solstice event.

Portland Civic Stadium, 9:30 PM.

There's a bonfire burning in the middle of the soccer field. The scent of roast boar drifts through the air. An ogre is chugging an entire keg of beer in front of a crowd of cheering Summer courtiers. A man with eyes made of swirling fireballs is boxing with a rat-faced fellow. A group of well-armored Lost are engaging in a mock-battle with metal swords. Somewhere, you hear gunshots.
The Solstice festival seems to be a mix of a fraternity rager, a medieval fair, and boot camp. It amazes you that the Summer court managed to take over a soccer stadium for this event, but you suppose even they have connections.

There's two and a half hours until the Crowning, where the Spring Court officially cedes control of the freehold to Summer.

>Are Terry and Mary here? You can't see them anywhere. Maybe you should make sure they're safe...

>Young Sam and his gang of truants have set up camp around a plain metal chair placed near the bonfire. Maybe he can tell you what's going on, as much as he irks you...

>Several Lost are watching the boxing match. You spy John the Man-Eater among them! Maybe the two of you can catch up?

>A group of Spring courtiers are lounging around one of the beer kegs, getting thoroughly smashed. You recognize the sodden form of Gwen Green-Gills among them, almost passed out. She looks like she could use a friend. One who isn't hammered.

>"Big Bill", the King of Summer, is posing awkwardly in a clear section of the field, holding a gilded spear weighed down with decorative florishes. There's an easel set up near him. Wonder who the artist is...

>Conrad's sitting on a lawn chair, talking with a couple of hooded figures that have "Autumn Court" written all over them. Maybe you should share what you know...

"...ertain of this?"

"Would I be saying this if I was UNcertain, granny? I talked to Niko, had him read the bones. He's certain, too. This Adorned Princeps thing's coming for him."

"I trust you weren't so incredibly stupid as to tell Wallander about this." this voice is deep and low, with a strange, echoey quality to it.

"Jesus, I've been a loyal member of the Court for a score and you still treat me like a child. OF COURSE I didn't blab. Those blood-hungry fuckheads wouldn't think twice about plunging the freehold into the jaws of war. Again."

"That's good, dearie. Now, if the Horned King were here, I think we all know what he'd say."

"Yes, we should dispose of this albatross and be done with the matter."

Old Middy- you can recognize her long nose poking out beneath her hood- clucks her tongue. "Must all of your plans involve killing someone?"

"I'm not saying we should kill him. But the man is clearly on the border of Madness: put him on a one-way bus heading towards Seattle. That way, we would kill two birds with one stone."

"Why, Your Awfulness, that is the most devious, under-handed, reprehensible thing I've heard in a dog's age!"

"I assume you disapprove?"

"Now, did I say that?"

"So it's decided."

"Like Hell it is! The guy might be nuts, but he still deserves a chance!"

"Hush, Conrad, the grown-ups are talking."

I don't know what fetches mean to the gentry (they created them after all) and I don't know what would happen to the fetch. He believes himself human and he will leave a grieving human family, so it would be cruel.
Offering new humans is one of the most despicable actions and the idea should be punished by death. The trap gift can go wrong if discovered but at least we're not dealing in people.

I think that we may need some plan here.
We already know that this Fae can't steal, so we should try to force the guy into an oath with someone, to justify our attempt to bargain and to weaken the Kepper's position, since he wouldn't be able to take him back even if he refused our offer (forcing the Mad to serve a Court would be ideal, otherwise he could simply murder the one owning the guy).
Or we could offer him a privateer, arguing that a changeling+offense to privateer's Keeper is more than an half-Mad Changeling, but I doubt that the Spring Courts would accept something like that.

"Risky. Far safer to just send this problem along to Seattle or California."

Conrad reaches in his shirt pocket for a cigarette, finds his pack empty, and angrily hurls it in the direction of the bonfire. "Are you fucking kidding me? That's the best idea you have, Magister? Hang one of us out to dry and risk starting another war with Seattle, or hell, with the Eastern courts? I thought we were the masters of fear. We shouldn't be running and hiding like the Winter court. I agree with Jerry."

"Grandmother? Your thoughts?"

"Well, I don't think it can HURT any if young Jeremy wants to do something like this, right?"

"I-I-I- y'sure y don' wanna see me on my back?" Gwen giggles in what she doubtlessly thinks is a flirtatious manner.

"Not right now. Not when you're this drunk."

"Awwwuhh... c'mon, lifaliddle. 'Sall we got, uh?"

Terry grins and shakes a paper cup at you as you approach.
"Hey, Jerry! Some party, huh?"

"Wouldn't know. I've been busy with something. Could use your help with it, in fact."

"Yeah? What's up?"

"...One of the Gentry's coming. Probably here."

Terry grunts. "Give me a second."

A couple minutes later, he returns with a sledgehammer. A huge grey iron head hangs at one end of it. "Okay, we're good."

"...Are you sure you want to be carrying that? I mean, holding an iron weapon at a crowded event like this is asking for trouble."

"I'm getting even, Jerry. They hunted me for too many fucking years, and now, I'mma turn the tables on 'em.""

Terry's eyes are slightly bleary; it's clear he's been hitting the keg a bit, but he looks sober enough to fight.

You and Terry head back into the crowd.

You pick up the wallet and tap the man on the shoulder. He turns around.

"Yes?"
Up close, you can see that he has a strangely foreshortened and upturned nose: it looks vaguely like the snout of a pig, or the nose of a bulldog. His skin clings tight to the side of his face: you've only seen faces like that accompanied by stories about people starving in West Berlin.

"I think this is yours."

The man squints and peers down at the wallet. "Why, yes, I believe it is. Thank you ever so much!"

He extends one skeletal hand and takes it.
"By-the-by: do you have a talent for this?"

"A talent for what?"

"Why, finding missing property! You see, I've misplaced some of mine, and I do believe that it's somewhere around here."

The skin on the Adorned Princeps's face begins tearing away at the seams and falling off like cherry petals, and his yellowing teeth suddenly shine in all the colors of the rainbow. He gains three feet on you all at once, with long, glittering arms and legs inscribed with flowing script in an unknown tongue. The crown of spikes gleams triumphantly as it thrusts through the derby he was wearing, leaving it perched comically above his head. His guards and their dogs change as well: they become grotesque ogres with skin sheathed in eyes, clad in long black robes, and the German Shepherds twist and melt together into Cerebii. A wave of sheer arcane POWER suddenly consolidates around his group, hitting you like a blastwave. The entire field stops as everyone turns towards the source of the sudden alteration to the atmosphere.

"Attention! Attention, please! Thank you. Now, I am the Adorned Princeps, Lord of the Gleaming Caverns of Neverwas- but I'm certain you all know me, of course. Now, you happen to be in possession of a certain piece of my property that has happened to run away. Remand him into my possession, IMMEDIATELY, please and thank you, or I will kill all of you where you stand."

You see Big Bill toss down the gilded spear he was posing with and start moving towards the Gentry out of the corner of one eye. The other spies the trio you spoke to earlier silently heading towards the exit. Everyone else seems paralyzed in shock and fear, save yourself and Terry.

>Terry, hit him! I'll start getting people out!

>I can give you something more valuable than your missing property.

>He's at a place called Conrad's Peculiarum, please don't kill me!

Buddy you'd better have a plan to back that up with.
If you've got something, I'm willing to go along, but if not we're digging a pit for ourselves.
>>
>>1333817
I like this actually. Getting him to the bargaining table buys us time, which we really need if we want a plan. If we can set a time and location for it that isn't here and now, we may be able to find another frailty. Or something to trade.
>>
>>1333833
the only thing of value i can think of that we own is the Paperback, otherwise whatever we trade would need to be a trap

>>1333789

>>
>>1333941

>>
>>1333817
i'll switch to this, we should at least see if we can somehow strike a deal before we try to kill the fucker
>>
Ok God-dammit, let's actually make a damn plan here.
First off, do we have anything to trade or to trick him with?
>>
>>1333943
kk
>>
>>1333950
the only thing we have that I can think of is the paperback, perhaps we could trick him with a deal of an abstract nature, or make a deal that won't have ramifications for us until a 1000 years or something
>>
>>1333950
>>1333947
What the hell are we going to trick him with? I just don't see the play here
>>
>>1333966
That's what I'm asking. I'm seeing if anyone has any ideas. If not we move onto plan b)
Can we take this guy in a fight? In our corner, we have a mob of changelings, some Summer nobility, and Terry with the hammer.
On their side, two Ogres, two Cerberi, and the big motherfucker himself.
So, can we?
>>
BUT
I think I have an idea.
The exact frailty is "Cannot refuse offer to bargain"
Now, let's say we offered to bring him to the bargaining table in say... three days?
He can't say no, and it buys us time, and gets us more support (Summer's going to be all over this).
>>
>>1333978
I think we absolutely can't fight a Gentry, that's straight goddamn insanity. Is the whole fucking court compromised now that a Lord found us? This is a shitshow. We definitely need to bargain, i think >>1333990
has the right track
>>
>>1333996
Follow up... do you think we can bargain our own lives... in exchange for him having to tell us the exact way to kill him? and then we just kill him?
>>
Let's see here, first thing is first >>1333817 this, get him to the negotiating table, hold off violence and let the rest of the Courts start to evacuate non-combatants. F/U post to come with ideas on trades
>>
>>1334007
Our life isn't worth that to him, there's no way he'd go for it. And you never want to go back on an oath that severe in Changeling.
>>
>>1333990
>>1333978
We CAN take them, it would just be extremely difficult/dangerous, we should just stall and gather the courts to work up a solution, so with that we should offer to bargain 3 days from now.
>>
>>1334017
Remember, it also wouldn't kill him permanently. If we piss him off by giving him a black eye, he'll come back with a Wild Hunt.
>>
>>1334013
I suppose we could offer something that delays our servitude, then kill him before we get there... but anyway.. >>1334010
>>1334013
we have that child's laugh don't we? that might be worth something if we can talk him into it
>>
>>1334027
I totally forgot about that, and we also have the token of a lover.
>>
Alright so idea, I think we might be able to play around with words here, this guy wants his changeling back but if we can word the contract in such a way as to only refer to the Changeling by his given name we could possibly make the argument that the only "person" who still lives and abides by that name is the fetch that he made. The changeling himself no longer lives by that name anymore but the fetch does. That way we're only selling him back his own property
>>
>>1334027
>>1334030
Could we just offer up all our abstract shit + the paperback to get him to fuck off? How much is one changeling worth to this Gentry?
>>
>>1334041
A lot.
And this guy seems like the type to take his property running away personally.
>>
>>1334040
But isnt the fetchs name this guys True Name? wouldn't the magic of contracts automatically go for the original owner of the true name?
>>
>>1334048

I think that would depend on how we manage to get the contract worded/exactly how mad this Changeling is. If he believes that to get his life back (his True Name in a sense) he has to kill his fetch and go back to the way things were the Wyrd might take that as a transference of the True Name until such clauses are met (eg. killing the fetch) that he regains the Name
>>
>>1334030
and the child's first cry but I still think that's not enough

I am totally against fighting the thing, we are doing this to protect one mad changelling's life, it would lose all meaning if even one of the Lost here died.

We should sit at the table and see what he would value in exchange for his property, get a look at what he is after and negotiate from there or get an idea of what we could trick him with, but time, time is of the essence and here is not the time nor the place, let's ask for a bit to sit down and talk
>>
>>1334041
You'll have to make an offer to find out...

>>1333996
To clarify: the Court isn't necessarily compromised just because one of the Lords and Ladies has turned up. Remember that they aren't all-powerful, and that they have a way of looking at the world that is very different from how a human does. They aren't all on the same side. Hell, by human standards, they're all in a state of constant war with each other.

>>1334022
Let me just put how "killing" one of the Gentry in our world works on the table, so you can make an accurate decision:

-"Kill" with anything besides a form of iron or their Doom: banished from the world for one day.

-"Kill" with iron: Banished from the world for one moon.

-"Kill" with cold iron (iron worked by hand, not using modern manufacturing techniques): Banished from the world for a year and a day.

-"Kill" with iron taken from a meteor and worked by hand: Banished from the world for a hundred and one years.

-"Kill" with their Doom: killed for ever and ever, or (if they're lucky) "merely" becoming one of the Exiled Ones.
>>
>>1334072

If it comes down to buying time I think we would need to put something up in exchange and in that case I would be willing to use the Token of True Love, see how much time that would buy us
>>
>>1334081
We can get him to the table for free, that's one of his frailties. I'd save the token for the bargaining table itself
>>
>>1334098

Getting him to the table does not guarantee that he will give us time to plan a negotiation. If we have to buy that time that's the one I would use for it
>>
>>1334106
Alright, if he doesn't go for the initial invitation, we offer up the token as incentive.
>>
He cannot refuse the offer to bargain, and cannot refuse a deal that nets him a profit, how about we stall him with the offer for a bargain in 3 days time, and then if he refuses we say the deal will be worth more to him than the changeling
>>
>>1334119

I am not sure that we have anything that would be worth more to him than the Changeling, if it came down to stalling for time to prep I would rather buy the time outright at the negotiation table than have ourselves beholden to trying to up the deal later. I would still be hoping to be able to sell back the fetch by using the Changelings name. I think this would work even better should we have prep time because we might be able to ascertain just how crazy this guy is and whether or not a deal made with his given name still targets him or the fetch
>>
>>1334119
Alright, I'm with this. Although there is one peril. If he decides to trap us in an Oath, we can't break it without serious repercussions.
>>
>>1334128
Well we don't have the Fetch right now do we? And we might not need our own stuff to do this if we can get the support of the Courts.
Plus, we're the only ones who would be beholden to anything. If any brawlers, magic users, or some tough son of a bitch wants to, we can use this time to find his last frailties and they can nail the son of a bitch for us.
>>
>>1334134
True, whatever deal we make binds us and only us with him, so we should keep this in mind if/when we're planning a trick
>>
>>1334134

We don't but it's not like the Fetch isn't involved intrinsically with the process, it has standing here we just have to be very careful with wording
>>
Also we should keep in mind that he can't refuse a deal where he profits, it doesn't need to be a huge profit, profit of 1 penny is still profit, maybe we should offer him a bargain with gambling rigged in our favor, and if he wins all he gets is a changeling + a little something extra
>>
>>1334157
I think we could argue that even if he gets the changeling back as-is, its still a profit for him, because the changeling has had new experiences he couldn't have while trapped under the princeps, which is a value-add
>>
>>1334157
or we could just put a penny in his pocket just to make sure...so its the changeling, plus one cent
>>
>>1334157
Wasn't our objective not to give him back the Changeling?
>>
>>1334175
Yeah it is, but in case we fuck up our loss will be pretty minimal all things considered
>>
>>1334175
Yes, but i think we need to prepare for a worst case scenario
>>
He also can't steal, I wonder if we made the changeling our property would leave it alone then?

>>1334262

>>
>>1334251
>(What would happen if we tried to trap him in a rigged gamble?)

This would cover the furthest bases
>>
OK, I'm a little drunk and I need to go to bad, I'll leave an idea that I had while pissing for you guys to discuss

We present him with a box, we say that inside the box there is something waaaaaaaay more valuable to him then the changeling, and we swear in the name of everything holy that what is inside the box is vary valuable, but just as long as it stays hidden and just the 2 of us see it

if he accepts we give it to him, he will open and the box will be empty, he will not tell anyone it is empty because they would think he's a fool, he will just look at it and store it very safely, because we just traded him his pride as a negotiator
>>
>>1334307
of course, we would never tell about it to anyone, because if we do, we just stolen his pride back
>>
>>1334307

I'll file that under "Plans just crazy enough to Work", seriously, Changeling might make that work
>>
>>1334307
this might actually work holy shit
>>
>>1334333
>>1334324

The good part is, if we make sure we swear that it's only valuable if only the 2 of us see it our outh will be true because if he for some reason decides to show the box to everyone in a fit of rage we are covered because "it was just as long we both see it" and he will be profiting because his pride is certainly more valuable then a changeling.

and by swearing a pact saying that what's inside is more valuable we will be both telling the truth and proving to him that what's inside is in fact more valuable
>>
>>1334345
that and he's not self aware enough to realize it's his pride
>>
>>1334351
We could also set an initially high price for the box before letting him negotiate it down to just the changeling to make him feel good
>>
>>1334307
Holy crap, man.
Nice.
Does this mean we should try the rigged gamble thing?
>>
>>1334360

The even better part is that it's not a gamble, it's a fair fucking trade!!!
>>
also, start the oath with "should you accept this deal I'll give you this box that will store something of extreme value to you and of superior value than the changelling..."

The should you is important because the.box has value after the deal is made, not before

You come up with an idea. A terrible, awful idea.

"Let us keep your property, and I'll give you something more valuable by far."

The Princeps head spins around, leaving the rest of his body facing the other direction.

"Oh, really? More valuable than a human soul? And what would that be?"

"It's a secret, but it's something you need."

Terry grabs you by the shoulder. "What the hell do you think you're doing, Jerry? Just let me smash this thing!"

"Cool it, Terry."

"Hmmmm... what would this secret be, perchance?"

You fight down the urge to grin. "I can't tell you that, or else it won't be a secret, but I can tell you that if you don't have it, you'll regret it forever."

The Princeps pauses for a second. "And what if I just kill you and take it?"

"Impossible. If you kill me for it, you'll never be able to have it."

"So, some kind of magic item, then?"

"You could say it's one of the most magical things there is."

"And in exchange, you want only one mortal?... Alright, bring it to me, now! My guards will go with you to ensure no trickery!"

"But of course! No doubt something so valuable would hide itself from all but the deserving..."

You stumble into an alley behind the stadium and grab a discarded cardboard food tray. You slap another one on top as a lid, then return.

"Here, Princeps! The most valuable treasure you shall ever possess!"

The Princeps reaches toward you with its gleaming claws, the barren voids of its eyes gleaming with naked hunger. You pull the box back. "Wait! First, you must swear that you will never pursue the Lost called Thomas Fletcher ever again, and that you will never speak about the contents of this box to another soul."

"I swear! Now GIVE ME THE BOX!"

"Well, you asked for it..."

You hand him the box, and he cackles madly as he opens it.

"Yes, yes! It is-wait. What is this! You... you tricked me!"

>(shrug) It's in there. I guess you aren't worthy.

>Maybe I did, but you're now bound to your word, evil thing. Now leave, or else you'll have to take on the entire Summer Court in one go.

>I did not. I've given you something more valuable than the Lost you wanted back: it's no fault of mine if you don't see that.

"If you need help understanding it, I could do that... for a price" (aka he forswears any negative actions against us)

>I did not. I've given you something more valuable than the Lost you wanted back: it's no fault of mine if you don't see that.
We've given him the lesson of "Don't trust random schmucks, no matter how honest they look".

We dodged a shower of bullets there with the Princeps's bad roll.

He merely doesn't understand the value of which we have so graciously traded him for.

Is this going to be like Kung Fu Panda where the greatest gift was inside them all along?

In the most graceful and humble manner.

"I won't spread this story around ... inside this box now lies your pride as a negotiator, I'd keep it safe."
>>

>I did not!....

You now posses what is of the greatest value to you, but no one can see or it will lose all value!

I can't believe it's working.....hold me anons

"I did not. I've given you something more valuable than the Lost you wanted back: it's not fault of mine if you don't see that."

"What? What cou- OH. Now I understand."

The Adorned Princeps starts laughing: a horrible sound, like coins falling on each other mixed with a death rattle. He turns and walks towards one of the exits: the air rips open, revealing a long, dark tunnel which he and his minions walk down. After almost a minute, the gate closes.

Terry is the first to break the silence. "What the fuck. You... did you just pull some kinda B'rer Rabbit shit on his ass?"

You open your mouth to speak, but are immediately drowned out by cheering and whooping. Someone dumps a half-empty beer keg over you. Two ogres lift you into the air and start running you around the bonfire. And all the while, you feel something blooming and growing inside you.

All in all, it's a good first impression to make.

I know exactly where you're at my man... those 7 points are fucking tempting, but dammit, we seem to be sticking to being a supernatural detective, and i think we should play smart instead of wyrd, so i'm voting

That's got a great ring to it, eh? Maybe we should open up an agency once we fulfill our autumn job contract
>>
>>1336412
>Maybe we should open up an agency once we fulfill our autumn job contract
Totally. We can play good cop, Terry can play bad cop, and Mary can be the girl who visits in bring-your-daughter-to-an-interrogation day. See if we can't bring our starting buds, Abaddon and Gwen on some cases too.
>>
>>1336447
Gwen if we need to set up a honeypot... hell, Abaddon too probably.
>>
>>1336460

And once they trip the honeypot, then John the Man-Eater busts through the wall behind them for a surprise!

So the plan is to become a mixture between Mystery Inc. and the A-Team? With fairies? I dig it.

>SOCIAL UPGRADE: JACK
I say we prioritize proving we exist first, then get the other stuff.
>>
>>1336519
That sounds like a great direction for us to go in. Who's going to play the role of our trusty pet, though?
>>1336527
Yeah, it'll help us get contacts for once we get the agency running if there's an identity for us to fall back on.
>>
>>1336447
So Mary would set up this?

The scene would be beautiful, we need to do this sometime.
Plus, the jarring change of tone would really put the screws to our perp, wouldn't it? Surely these foul miscreants can't deny an innocent little girl.

Upgrade: Jack taken! !hile the name can be taken for Jack-of-all-Trades, it also refers to the universal archetype of the hero who wins by luck and guile, such as in "The Brave Little Tailor" and "Jack the Giant-Killer"

Next thread will start tomorrow, and will pick up a week after the Solstice. How will you be spending this week?

This site may help you if you're interested in what was going on in the world (the date in the link is for the Solstice):

We were obviously listening to "Got To Give It Up" all the week aparently

some things to do:

Take Mary shopping for clothes for when regular school starts

Use our newfound goodwill among the courts to find Terry a job, poor bastard is going insane

Follow up on Gwen and see if she is counseling now that spring is over

See our Man-Eating friend and give him a last chance to come clean about what's going on between him and Brown so we can help, we saw them at the party

Become hooked on that TV show "All that Glitters"

Also, about our new identity, can it have a relation to Mary? I doesn't need to be father(even though that would be ideal) but at least something to let us clean up and attend parent's meetings and school plays

The chores and errands I agree with here, we should also definitely go check out this newfangled Star Wars movie that came out

2nded. We should ask Conrad to see if he can hook us up with a better identity later.
>>
>>1339324
We already did, with Mary and Terry
>>1338996
We should also see about getting Mary into Summer School. She needs to catch up likely.
>>
>>1339345
2nded. Mary might also find some new friends that isn't Young Sam.
Maybe we could get the Summer Court to hook Mary up with Summer School?
>>
>>1339363
I don't think that's how that works... but I like your style
>>
>>1339345

I believe she already is on summer school

She's already enrolled and getting set to go to school in the regular year
